Flip Phones and Text Abbreviations - Are They Still Appropriate?

Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we’re saving the English language sixty seconds at a time! I’m Lauren Smyth, and I’m about to tell you my opinion. This is supposed to be a fact-based podcast, you’ll say, but is there really much of a difference? [bleep] Should you use abbreviations in text messages and emails? L-O-L might be a great way to text your BFF, but what do the grammar folks think? Text abbreviations were designed for cell phones that didn’t have keyboards. Think your old Nokia flip phone. Back then, you had an excuse to not write words correctly. Smartphones have eliminated this problem almost entirely, so we don’t really need abbreviations anymore. I think text abbreviations are still fun to use. But as a general rule, avoid using them in emails where you have a big ol’ keyboard to help you type, because they signal lack of effort. Also avoid using them in formal text messages (say, to someone you haven’t met) and definitely don’t use them if you’re politely asking for a favor. That’s your Grammar Minute!
