Episode description

908: Junshen Wang is originally from Taiwan where he studied to be, and had a career as a mechanical engineer. After retirement, he, like many of us, fell in love with flyfishing and golf. As an engineer, he recognized that the golf swing and flyrod’s casting bore the same attributes that govern Newton’s Laws of Motion. So he had questions that he was determined to answer like: What is the crucial factor for the ball’s distance? What is the formula that determines Smash Factor, and why? Will a heavy golf club influence how far the ball goes? This week he shares his theories and his book called “Learning The Golf Swing Through Physics” available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Learning-Golf-Swing-through-Physics/dp/B0C2S1MBXM.

In golf three. Only smart practice makes perfect. You have used your brain. Ego can fly that their instinct. They can fly human beings. You want to fly, you have to study the aerodynamics for the golf throe is not human beings natural motion. You have to learn the technique the nuanced factors to hit the ball like outside in. You don't think about the curve.

You just think about your arm's motion. Your arm's motion is identical with the baseball swing and your bodies will help your club head to a forty five degrees three. You have to use your brain. For managers, you have to think and how to grip the club head wisely. Hey, this is an acumenate from Madrid to Spain and I play that Santandard golf. This is called First Smarter number nine hundred and eighty. Learning the golf swing through Physics with

the author Jun Chang Wang. We're Jason. This is Golf's Murterer, sharing stories, tips and insights from great golf minds to help you lower your score and raise your golf IQ. Here's your host, Fred Green. Welcome to the Golf Smarter Podcast. Jason, thank you very much, thank you for having me here. Well thank you for reaching out, because I gotta be honest, this is a real stretch for my capacity of intellect and knowledge. I never took physics as a student in school. I don't understand physics,

and clearly I don't understand the golf swing. But I'm hoping that you can help that make make that easier for me and whoever's troubling with this as well. Excellent understand that most people has no back Wrongbaltiy engineering and I understand right. So you were trained as a mechanical engineer and where term many decades? About forty decades, four decades, okay, four decades. Where did you grow up? I'll grow up in Taiwan, okay? And what brought you

to the United States about nineteen ninety one? And why I immigrant to the United States? And then I worked as a boiler and the machinery inspect her for more than twenty twenty six twenty seven years in America. When I was in Taiwan, I was a mechanical engineer in a steer yard and shipyard. And also in addition to that, I worked for the commercial UH commercial area for for many years. But I still interested in my mechanical engineering business because

I like it because I used my brains to thinking to solve problems. Okay, well I'm glad hopefully we can solve a big problem today. When did you start or how did you start? Playing golf? Oh that's a lot. When I kept to the States at first, Uh, I like fly fishing. I think, yeah, fly fishing, and that's oh, that's very genius approach. So I but I couldn't find any any any books about the theory about fry fishing. So I studied for a lot for for for

so several years because it's very genius approach. I found how you can make more powerful uh casting? Right, that's it. Later on one as as as many people practice au golf. Right there, I go practice golf, practice golf, and when I practice golf, I think, hey, the same I did same in mechanical engineering. By h point of view, the

golf sewing has the same reason reasoning with the flight fishing. So I use my study of my flight fishing outcome results apply to golf playing when I play golf, right, I asked olcol Because the golf sewing is actually it's a kind of rotary emotions as governed by physics and mechanical engineering. So I asked the theory principle to golf instructors. But many questions they cannot answer me. No, I would think that they don't have the understanding of the mechanical theory

like you do. I don't want to blame them because they have they have a lot of spirits and knowledge, but they no, they have no background of physics. They no order to about a nutance law, or no about mechanical engineering. So almost most of them they cannot answer my my questions. So I was frustrated, frustrated, and my my body has some defects all right, and I cannot wait during the fly fishing. My arms has my body has some problems. It's very hard to to make the all the fly

fishing very very well. So I just started. I started start start studying the the the nuance of the suing. Then I used that to apply that one to the golf suit. Right, because they cannot answer my questions. Nobody to ask about right, even mechanically engineer, they just follow the the instructor coaches instruction. Right. They cannot they's just do it. They didn't think I'm a guys like to thinking in addition to my study in fry fishing.

So I start switched to UH if the swing golf suit for first question, as they told me the U for instance, the smash factor. That's what smash factor for? Right? They cannot answer my what just they just tell me the efficient efficiency of the suit. Are very curious. Then I said, hey, I would like to study that, right, So I used in my mechanical engineer background and the fly fishing study results. I calculate the the suing motion. Then it takes a long time because it's very hard

to find make out a This the swing swing golf swing formula. Okay, that's based on the mutant's law. Based on the mutant's law, this formula contents the factors affecting the ball speed and bold distance. So then I found too many fests some factors affecting the ball the smash factor and the ball distance, and in fact only two factors. One is a co r of the collision between the golfer between a golf ball and golf UH and the goal UH

and the golfer holding a club. So it's the club and the club head and the ball. Yeah. The the CR you the CR means of the collision. Right, the collision, as far as I understand, has not been addressed in the golf world. But this continued acceleration in the in the in the heating impact, right, this is UH somewhat revolutionary. Discover the what is the continue the acceleration is the result of the force, and the

force generate acceleration. So the general why is the generation acceleration is send meaning us the force. So the critical the crucial factor affecting the bold speed is the is the is the UH continued acceleration. The concept of the accelery acceleration is send us. You know the rifle, the rifle. Sure, the rifle has long barrels, right, yeah, the barrels. The bullet bullet

go through the barrel. There's a continued acceleration. If you'll cut the barrel, have or cut off the barrel, the bullet w won't fast, Huh if you cut the right because the continue acceleration in the barrel keeps the bullet go should fast, should further? Should a long distance? Did not know that? Okay, you think about do do hunt? Do you hunt? Now? Okay, you're the rifle. The barrels, the distance, the

length of the rifle, the shorter the life. If you cut the barrels in shorter, cut in the half, your your bullet won't won't go very fast or won't go very fast far. So that's the same reason you have to use continued acceleration. How to increase how to increase the continued acceleration? The men I thought it is make a good In popular term is of pivot motion, the pivot motion right, use your le use your left leg as a pivot. Then you can turn your hip. That's the pivot motion.

But in physics or in a mechanical engineering you should say offset swing offset office means you you'll move the the axis of the rotation away from the center center line of the body. That approach would increase your power, your heating power, the energy comes from that. So everybody said we need it nowadare's many golfer will ask the students have a bad good peevot motion? The peevot motion you know that? Yeah? Yeah, You'll use your left left leg as

a spindle, then you turn your hip. That's av emotion. If you can make it make a good privot emotion, then you can you can exert a good power and preparation to hit the ball. Okay, so I'm sorry to interrupt, but I'm going to take a quick time out here. It's kind of like when you leave your iPhone or your leave your phone out in the sun too long and it overheats and shuts down. My head starting to overheat and shut down with all this information, So okay, take a quick

break and we'll be back right after this. I'm referring to you as Jason. I know that your name, and on the book you go by your name, which is and Wang. Yeah, but you prefer to be called Jason, So Jason. But if if you're looking for people are looking for the book which is called Learning the Golf Swing through Physics, and I'm holding the book up now, Learning the Golf Rings Golf Learning the Golf Swing through Physics by Junshen Wang from Taiwan. I'm we have to make this so I

can understand this. I'm sure there's a lot of other people who already understand what you're saying, but I'm gonna work on this. Have you ever are you familiar with the book The Golfing Machine by Homer Kelly. You've been there?

Is it The Hitting Machine or the Golfing Machine. No, okay, is that it's a It's a book by that was written almost a hundred years ago called Homer Kelly called the Golfing Machine, and he took he took a very scientific approach to the golf swing, which I think you would relate to if you're not familiar with it. I think that's what Bryson Deshambo is a student of that book, the details of that book, and he's kind of a science nerd, so you would probably understand what he was saying and probably

confirm your theories at the very least. Let's talk about the Newton's Law of motion and how how it is relevant to golf. You mean he's the point of view off my book. Yes, yes, please, okay, okay. While you'll learn, you have to get to the point. What is the key point to h He hit the ball with a powerful it right, and many people know not much about the physics. For instance, how to increase the c o R like a c Armys. While approach is to hold

a grip, the powerful grip to the club right. But why how to do that? Many good one good thing is you cannot hold it, hold the club very tight you had to make use of the we called it suddenly apply the load all right too, which is beings up or you suddenly grip tighter, then the gripping power will almost doubble according to the physics. So that's you know, when you hit the ball where you grab the however, grip the club you cannot hold extremely extremely tight. You have to use use

the physics phenomenon too to increase your gripping power. Like you like a Soydier when it hit his enemy with his acts or sword, when he stares at his enemy, when he topped on his enemy, he was suddenly grip grip the his sword very tight. Right that he says, suddenly does it suddenly applied the lord or lord sort when we when we grip the club, we cannot grip it extremely tight. Right, And based on physics, you know where is the most critical point of the gripping the gripping point I as I

as my I as my droid illustrations in my book. That's the the the start uh uh the end point closer to the ball. That is the most important point. You have to pay attention on that point. So based on this principle, if you know this principle. You'll get the direction as to how to practice the ball all right, And you know the as I mentioned, the the U continued acceleration, which means up during the d during the during the heat the impact. You have to use additional strength to hit the

ball right. And if you know that, you you you have you get you you will have the direction. See how to increase your power. You have to pay attention to your make a good pivot motion. If you can make a good pivot motion, then you can have it. You can perform a a good, good continued acceleration. In the meantime, the heating power will increase. That's important. So that's why I wrote this book to the

golfers, so they give them all. My book here is not by not by experience, not by popular opinion, but based on the physics, based on the Newton's law. To the arrives the conclusion. So all the conclusion supposed to be the well I will supposed to be correct. It should be followed. So I'm curious when you started to dig deep into the smash factor and the cor and understanding Newton's law of motion, how did it impact your

golf game? Did you start hitting the ball much farther. No, because in fact, wait a minute, In fact, I try to improve my body. That's why I study. Because I can seem very good at the left, at the left or left side, but for the right side, I cannot because my body is very rigid on the one side. So my doctor says, you cannot continue use data side. You have to use the other side, just the the right hand side. Right. Because when the fly fish I found, I draw back, I cannot move forward. So

I on one side, I try to correct my body. The other side, I study the golf swing right, and with my mechanical and physics UH background, and then I discover so many theory, many reasoning, oh, regarding the golf swing. Because the golf swing it's not humans natural movement. Right. And for the baseball you can, for you can hit the but quite easily. No one, no baseball hitting school, No absolutely though, but there's many golf swing schools. And here are a lot of fishing a

lot of money. Yes people for instant people said, people said, uh, the what they called it the outside in the swing? The outside EMA for myself, that shouldn't be happened to send us the uh baseball hitting, if you follow the follow the rule, follow the rule you want slowly, you won't make any mistake. You cannot. Uh, that's that's too many theory, all right, too many professional the apparent You see the the golf swing from like from an angle down you that's apparent. That's an apparent.

Uh, swing pass the actual swing pass send us baseball hitting, your arms right, always, always go with your flank, decide right, and your arms always goes not keep closer to your torso in that situation you have strengths work come out. So many many people just you see see the apparent the past. So they try to swing light this way over the top it's at the angle. Then that's wrong. You cannot. You should because the arms

and torso your body must be in synchron synchronized, must synchronize. You cannot separate. So your arms supposed to supposed to be in relative motion. Your arms go with your your flank, right flank, if you use the right hand, always go with the right flank rather than there's a relative motion. You have to understand the relative motion. And Okay, we're going to take a time out and we're going to come back and talk about relative motion.

We'll be sure sure to this game improvement, insights and advice never seems to age, which is why we hear at Golf Smarter focus on evergreen content that stays fresh and helpful for years and years. That's why our greatest asset is our library of interviews, which is why Golf Smarter Mulligans was created. Each Friday, we bring back episodes that are no longer available on any podcast app, including what you're listening to right now. So this week we go back

to a conversation with author Paul Staley about his book Why We Golf. There's that old cliche, it's fear and greed to move the market. I think the dad explains an incredible amount of what happens to us out on the golf course, and a talk in the book about how you can take all your bad shots and you can put them into two buckets. You've got the fear bucket and the green bucket. You've got the short sighted, you've got to get over a bunker, you've got a narrow tea shot, you've got a

difficult downhill put. Anytime that's your weight stays on your backside, that's a fear shot. You're already backing away from it before you even finished it, you know. And then there are the green shots we're playing, well, we were stroking it right down the middle, So the next time we're out there, we're just going to go for a couple more yards off the tea. So you start coming over the top, you're pulling it into the trees, or you were seeing the line well on your pots, so you're gonna

be able to get a bit more aggressive. Now you've got three feet coming back. It's like this metronome and you go back and forth between those in terms of how you play the game. That's Paul Staley, author of Why We Golf, on episode two hundred and twenty four of our sister podcast, Golf Smarter Mulligans, being released this Friday morning to prepare for your weekend round.

This episode was original members only episode in early twenty twelve, so it's never been released publicly before, so please follow us regularly and never miss the next insight that could change your game. Golf Smarter is published every Tuesday, and Golf Smarter Mulligan's our sister podcasts that revisits the best of Golf Smarter episodes that are no longer available. It's released every Friday from wherever you're listening right

now. There's a couple of things that I want to cover, including the definition of smash factor from your perspective. But let's start with relative motion. What came by relative motion? Okay? Wo see okays in the lake, you see the other side, go straight? Right, go straight? Why is the water coming from the surrebra the water coming down? You'll ado, you'll you you want to sue to the the other side. You cannot go straight, you have to at the angle. Okay, sure, right,

that's such a relative relative motion. That's same thing in the golf string. Really, many many people says the outside in a very beginner. I asked them because I understand them. They did not confuse to wish them wish the concept. Actually golf is same US baseball hitting the arms, arms route, if you don't move, if it's golfer, don't move your arms is the same US the baseball from top to down to to your to your waist and then hit out, extend out, call identical. Because that's human beings.

The best power you can you can exert out, it can develop. That's that's a that's a that's definitely uh a a rule. Right, And unfortunately, when golf's sewing, you are bent, you're bent forward, right, but you're bend forward, you are you are still supposed them a space war. Your arms go to the let's let's eat somewhat exaggerate goal with you're a side frank, and then push forward identical with the golf baseball throe. The only thing is your bent mm hm. Then you have to make a off

with a pivot motion. This pivot motion, you know, the pivot motion will make the circular motion into a crack into a angle motion forward to hit the ball. Okay, that is the so you you look like everybody. So it's specially the beginner. When they said the veterans, they hit the ball, they are suing the swing his arms at the angle at forty five angle. The beginner's all I know at the angle. That's then he made a mistake. That's apparent. That's apparent angle. He should basically he should

follow them as a base baseball heating. He should comes down, but his body is turned so his body met his back. The club had moved at the angle to hit the ball rather than rather than he's suing the club at the forty five degrees angle. That's wrong in case you're suing that the club

and the club had at a forty five degrees at the very beginning. If you move your if you rotate your porcel, then your pass will become so called extremely outside in that's many mistake that many beginners, even myself at the beginning, while I listened to the this uh, I found at discover this this nuanced mistake. Right, they should not hit at the forty five degrees angle because the golfing swing pass is is composed of arms motion and and your

corso or Bobby's peoplet motion. That's a current at the angle. So the the swim pass supposed to be Uh, your arms like a baseball hitty moved down. But because your body move, you're a swim path ahead. That becomes a forty five degrees angle. That makes the swim pass okay, okay. And you know one of the things that intrigued me in the in your book about what you call the undiscovered stories between hitting a fade and a draw. Now, I've always I've always had a fade to to my shot,

and I kind of embraced it because I've struggled with hitting a draw. Sometimes it happens, but I just don't know when it's going to or how to make it work. And many teachers said, oh no, no, that's easy. It's just it's in your head, the faith and draw. Many as father, I know, many people will say the keep the club had in the slant faces and hit the ball, so they would put the slice or whatever. But not that's not the whole story because in case you don't

have the continue the acceleration, as I to discuss earlier. Without that, the ball won't have won't speed, They won't they won't speed. Only in my book described very detailed, because I know many people cannot expread this only when you use the makes good use of the acceleration. Acceleration continue acceleration doesn't for additional force. Then the ball when contact the club has a club faith keep coming and you you can. You can push it up and slice it

so the ball will rotate on make a quick fast spinning. Oh okay, the very high speed spinning. Then it creates generates fade or draw. Another thing is another thing important is for beginners, because I told you the pivot motion right if you'll make a good privous motion. You're swimming. Your club has swimming passed. It is wrong. It's in this large circle and very

flat, so indu stuation. You won't make any uh, you won't make any faith or draw if you keep it right for the beginners, because they cannot make it make a good circle right, the circle will be shrink so he cannot make a good pivot pivot motion. So he's a club head club and the club head will make an in word slicing motion. I'm not sure you can. You can try it. If you make a big circle right, if you make it half, then your club club club head, it

actually moves forward to you. It likes you. You can make a slice about the boot and then it creates it generates a fade, a fade the motion before you know it. Many people don't know that. But because you you can see my book the when you're where you are. If in the beginner they cannot make a good circle, the big circle, the circle maybe only there half, then there's a difference. There's a difference. There's that this way this way, and they can make on it this way. So

your club had actually make it, make it like a slice motion. So that's many people. It's for beginners. They declined to hit the favor rather than a draw. He won't, he never, he would never ever hit the draw because it's club moved moved inward, move inward rather than move outward. So industuation a slice happened that. I studied that for a while for

a long time. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Also I'm curious do in looking at physics and studying physics and the golf swing, there's a heavier club or a heavier club head have any impact on what the balls the distance of how far the ball is going to go. I will say the even your body and your golf club, golf club head, all right, no matter how heavy they are, little influence in the bold distance. This is according

to the Bold speed formula. Right, so you don't. I saw some YouTube some people use that big hammer trying to swim the big hammer as Oh my gosh, they waste their time. They don't know that he's they don't know. They don't study the I would say, they don't read by book. Okay, I still keep that book. You waste your time. That's the weight of the club or the club had won't help because the ball is so small in weight in comparison, in comparison with your body, this huge

difference. Right, So the board distance only affected by two things? Why is the ceo R the other one is continued acceleration? You'll weight totally of don't use say no matter how heavy you're a huge sladge, or use a harmor the board won't won't go father, god father an inch? No, absolutely no, don't waste your time? Wow? The why the now? The golfer there like a like a driver, Why he can hit father?

Because not because it's weight, because of the design. They are like an energy, like a like a the the head like what you called it sore energy and the release energy that helped the ceo R increase. That's the reason, not because of because of the weight. Well, fascinating why. I hope yes, go ahead. I hope many people can after reading these books

or understanding the physics, they will know what happened. Don't waste your time on the tributes And you say, big hammer, I know you are strong, but totally ill no use Well, you know, if if you have an understanding of physics, if if the listener has an understanding of physics and how to apply it. Then you'll be absolutely fascinated by this book. I don't know. Once you understand the physics how there's no instruction how to apply

it. But once you have a better understanding, you'll know what you're going to apply again. The book is called Learning the Golf Swing Through Physics by Junshan Jason Wang, and it's available everywhere. Were you buy books? Right? Yeah? Okay, that's another another story. Why you like to learn something smart? All right? For golf, you cannot say per practice makes perfect. That's not in golf through. You have to smart practice. Only

smart practice make perfect. You have to use your brand. Ego can fly, that's their instinct. They can fly. Human beings you want to fly, you have to study the aerodynamics, right, same thing, same thing for the golf through. It's not human beings natural emotion. You have to learn the technique, the nuance factors to hit the ball for instant. I said, use big harmor. I'm stronger than you. I use a big harmor to hit you. Waste your time, right, totally waste your time.

Like outside in you don't think about the curve yourself, think about your arm's motion. Your arm's motion is as a stress identical with the baseball swing down to your follow your your your frank or your torso right and your your torso your bodies people. Soon we will help your club head to a forty five degrees swing. You have to use your brand right for many things, manages. You have to h to think and how to how to grip the h club head wisely? Right, I'll tell you what, tell which which

point of the club is most important? Part? Right? Which part? When you probably where you're holding the club, but then where you're holding the club? Yes, holding the club? Okay, which point that's a very important I in my drawing, I you say reinforce the canty level being that is the regular a mechanical civil engineerings drawing, you can tell. Let let

let you go for yourself, tell which point is very important? You know you cannot grab the club extremely tight from the very beginning, not only fatigue, right, you cannot create the suddenly apply the load, which is in physical in physics is a double double the regular force, almost double the regular force on the subject. Right. Based on this, you have to study

wisely. So that's why it's a smart practice makes perfect, don't practice make perfect well thank you so much for this education I really appreciate and best of luck with the book. Really enjoyed having you on. Thank you, thank you at having me. And I hope I can. Because I'm the studying the I get bendy wrong information. Now I hope they can't get a correct right I don't want to say I'm correct, but the right information based on

the theory, based on the physics. I hope your audience will benefit front our interview, and I hope so too. So a week and a half ago, it was my birthday, and just after my birthday, Johanne and I were supposed to be away for a couple of days up in the Sierras, which was going to include a round of golf and an interview with the

director of instruction at why Hawk Ranch and Gray Eagle Meadows golf clubs. Best laid plans, right, That's because I got one of the biggest surprises I've ever received my birthday when the day after I tested positive for COVID nineteen and as usual, Joanne was just one day behind me and testing positive as well. Amazingly, it was the first time for both of us. Frankly, based on the timing I'm pretty sure I contracted it at the Giants game.

I went with my older son who has had COVID twice, so thankfully he escaped it this time. So after five days of being on packs loovid, I tested negative and have been working patiently and diligently to get my full strength and clear mind back. It was a short bout, but it did kick my butt. Two days after testing negative, I did go out and play eighteen and we'll be playing one of my favorite courses, Harding Park in San Francisco tomorrow. Now there are three elements of why I am so excited about

this week's golf Ambassador Anna Jimenez from Madrid, Spain. I always love to hear from women who are listening to the podcast in Madrid, Spain. How awesome is that? So I just checked with my podcast distributor. In downloads in the United States account for seventy percent of my total audience, followed by Australia, UK, Canada, Taiwan, Spain, Japan, Ireland, Sweden, and New Zealand rounds out the top ten countries to have Golf Smarter listeners.

And just to be fair, Germany is a fraction behind New Zealand. Now the third part is that Anna recorded her episode into her phone and sent me the file, so there are options other than recording over the phone line. So where in the world do you live and listen to? Golf Smarter love to hear from you and hear where you play as well. We're a global community of active, passionate golfers who want to learn as much as possible
