Mary and Sue were interviewed on a panel as part of International Women’s Day 2023 by Gearóidín Mhic Mhathúna, Glór na Móna Operations Manager.

Mary Enright was born and raised in the New Lodge Road in Belfast before marrying and settling in Dermot Hill in West Belfast. Mary was a founding member of the Relatives Action Committees which led the campaign against the H-Blocks, the radical republican feminist group, Women Against Imperialism and she later helped establish the Falls Women’s Centre in 1984. Mary is a long-standing trade union, feminist and socialist activist who has worked with a range groups such as UNISON, PPR and CAJ.

Sue Pentel was born and raised in London before moving and throwing herself into politics here in Ireland. She was a member of People’s Democracy who also helped found Women Against Imperialism. Sue is a trade union, feminist and socialist activist who has been an outspoken critic of the Israeli occupation of Palestine. She is also an Irish language activist who helped found Gaelscoil na bhFál and Ionad Uíbh Each.
