Episode description

Marie Joseph Angelique is hands down one of the most misunderstood women in Canadian history. She was enslaved at a young age in Portugal before being forcibly transported to Montreal. Marie knew that her enslavement was wrong and immoral. She regularly rebelled in every way that she could and would admit to everything she did, without hesitation. She was the living embodiement of rebellion, and white Montrealers despised her for it. When the great Montreal fires of 1734 occurred, everyone was quick to blame Angelique, but she maintained her innocence. No one believed her, and she was tortured until she gave a coerced confession in order to end her suffering.
