Ladies and gentlemen. U. E three is over, twenty eleven is done. That's the that's the cheer of some people who have been at E three. Very exhausting, but very satisfying. It's it's been a fun show. And this is gonna be our last night of live broadcasting and podcasting from the Giant Bombhouse down here in La for E three twenty eleven. Uh, let's talk to our our opening salvo of guests for the evening. Jeff Grishman's here,
Jeff, how you doing. I've gone soft in the head. Today was the day that the bottom dropped out and I don't Yeah, I've tried to, I don't have it. It was it was a slow day for us. Yeah, we didn't have as it wasn't as action packed as far as the scheduling went. And I put all of my mental focus into like
the last few pointments we had. Yeah, interviewed Ken Lavine. How to keep it together for that right, Maybe not the best idea for us to do to schedule our Ken Lavine an interview for like three o'clock on the store. Really well, but yeah, we go back and watch the tape and I'm just drooling and he's just talking. Who could say that? Seems possible. Mark Spear is here from Game Trailers, host producer of Invisible Walls,
Marcus, how you doing, sir? I am happy East three is over, and I was really happy until somebody tweeted there's only three hundred and sixty one days to LENX one. That's right, boss June five. Ye, I don't like it. As soon as you walk in you can see the banner that says, see you next year's sucker. I want to think about three. Hey, guys, came, was coms coming? Fuck you? Patrick les here? Patrick, how you doing, sir? Yeah? I
haven't seen Super eight yet. We were talking this morning. Uh, like as everyone was getting ready to mount up and go hit the floor one last time, Like Patrick, just let's just fucking bail. Let's just go see Super Eight's planned arc by at Hollywood. There's like an eleven forty showing. Let's started crying and You're like, dude, stop saying this to me, Stop telling me these things. You're gonna see that when we get back to San Francisco. Yeah, you have to. You have to wait till Sunday.
There. I gonna wait till Sunday. So but you know, at this point, I didn't see it at midnight, which is would would been my my my choice for that. So this point, you know, I'm alright with wait until so I'm just gonna start texting you on like Saturday. I'm gonna see it then and just like, oh man, this part was awesome and you will not be old, no specifics, just as you're watching. Every time this part happens, just text me like this part number one,
live texting you from from when I go see Super eight. And then this Kanye West song was in the movie. Man, I cannot escape that Kanye West song. God damn it. Can you keep playing it over and over? No no, no, no, no, no, no, no no no, It's not me. That's Vinny Caravella is the one that
has that has found a crazy obsession. We've discovered that that Kanye West, that that song Power, which was on the Forts of four trailer as well as well as the this microphone is gonna have somebody's eyes as well as the the States Or of the third trailer was was the song of the show. And what we discovered today is that you can literally literally pair that song with any trailer that already exists and it totally works. It's crazy excited for that
thing. It's the Giles theme of hip hop. Absolutely. Speaking of forts of four, Brian Eckberg is in the house. What's up. How's going, sir? It's been it has been a while since I've seen you. Year. Yeah, yeah, most year. The one thing I wanted to tell tell I'm gonna break the conversation here because I got to talk to Ryan
Davis about this. Okay first, before we continue on, please, I was thinking of you because as I was heading over here, I realized that the one thing that you and I love the most in the world is here in LA. Moved from San Francisco, and that is now in LA. Do you know who I'm referring to? What's that? Evelyn Taft? That's right. She is the weather girl here in LA. That's right, that's right, weather girls watching as a Channel nine. She's on CBS now,
so yeah, you can, you can? You only. Evelyn Taft was the weather girl for for Krown, for the the former NBC affiliate in San Francisco, and just a beguiling weather girl presence, charming, yeah, absolutely extremely charming. And then it was. It was crestfallen is the word I would use to describe when it was. When when it was learned that Evelyn Taft was packing up and heading to a larger market and actually getting a proper network job and doing the weather here in La, it's like, oh,
no, she seen her? Have you seen her lately? No? No, they totally tanned her out, and she's all like, she's like blonde bimbo. Now she's totally la having lived in San Francisco for a year and then coming down here as a totally shallow PERVT. I fucking love all the hot women, but maybe anything like that, but it's like there stealing our that we're down here already, that we're making them hot. I don't know.
She don't you lose enough like Kansas girls off the bus. You gotta go to California too, seriously, steal our water and you're stealing our women. I'm from Britain, fair enough. They've never seen the sun there, so you're just happy to see any sort of skin, skin before it gets melanoma. Indeed, indeed, Braneckberg, such a thrill to have you here. It's great to be back, great to see you guys, how how was your show? What were you doing for for forts of while you're here?
Well, I'm a community manager with Turn ten, so along with the rest of the guys from ten, we were showing off what's the four man? Happy to show that game off. You guys saw the trailer. I'm not gonna talk too much about the trailer because who knows where it could go, But we were really happy by that trailer because we were super stove. We've been working super hard on the game. It's true, and I mean I don't It's not a negative Kanye thing is effectively, Yes, absolutely,
it's It's just one of those. It ended up becoming the the kind of de facto song of the show for us. It has been stuck in everyone's head in this house for the duration of the show since the press conference. Looks pretty good with the tan you like, oh Jesus Christ on a bike? Wow? Damn Yeah, we have a phrase in the UK mocks out of ten. I'd give a one. Chris Tilton is here from Chris Tilton.
Hello, music from Chris Tilton from TV's Fringe. Chris Tilton is in the house us, and I think it's worth noting here that it is the last day of E three and it is Chris Tilton's birthday, so happy the best birthday ever. Having happy birthday to to Chris Tilton. Did did you get to see some fun stuff at the show today, sir? I saw some awesome stuff today, but I would like to have the first thing I did, uh, the first day that I got here was go play Forts
of four on the good hydraulic thing. Yes, free screens. Can you know what the best part about it was? Yes? So free? Yeah, totally totally free, no problem. So let's let's ballpark that like that rigs impressive, the three screens, the rollcage, the wheel, the tilt stuff. Let's let's ball screens plus three xbox three xboxes. Yees so, three copies of Forts and four three xboxes, three screens, a computer to run the chair. You got it, You got it, and then alive
Kanye West. That's right. It was weird. I had to do all the rapping before he got there. It's not as kind of click ye saw the game before the show started. It was just like rings yeah exactly. Yeah. No. We that's custom built super nuts Man, and we actually have two of them because at the E three Judges event on Monday night. We had one there as well. So we leave that one down here in LA and we just pick it back up when when we come back down today.
Yeah, just drop it off. I can't tell you how many times people came out to me and says, how do I where do I buy that? And I'm like, you don't buy it, you build it and you need many, many thousands of dollars. But we're in LA and they're like, okay, what yeah, let's do it. Let's make it happen. So that's not even something that we can we can ballpark a price on for it, because it's it's it is something that turned ten just made.
Yeah, it's totally customed. I don't know where just I would say thousands and thousands of dollars. I was looking at ridiculous D box chairs for you know, like they would work with PC racing games and other stuff like that, and it seemed like those things were up. We're it's a fourteen grand just for the chair alone. Yeah, yeah, we're not talking to me in there. Several small people for the costume murder to feed them. It's
not murder, it's just like slave labor with Dwarfs. It's movies feel so much better with me, Matters, Fast five and d Box, no other way to fly man. I gotta say, uh, Chris Telton, happy birthday. Thank you, Thank you for for for for choosing to spend your your birthday here or at least your evening here with us. And you brought a bunch of beer and also some delicious homemade Jemali which was awesome, and bacon roses and bacon roses that is courtesy of of Chris's lady friend over here.
She made the bacon roses. They're delicious. Well, we wouldn't have her if we didn't have you, that's true. I'm gonna I'm gonna thank her, but I'm also gonna thank you for bringing her so and you know what's up. Thank you, Oh, thank you, Jeff. And I'm gonna thank Alex Navarro for rounding out here are Oh you're welcome. Our couch is here for the day. Thank you for hosting these many, many many hours of podcasting that we have done here. I'm just I'm gonna stay up
front here. This is not gonna go as long as the other ones have gone. I do not have it in me to sit here and it gets wise. Yeah, I think that's very wise. Yeah, we gotta we gotta pack up and roll out of La tomorrow. So so I can't I can't say him till do in the morning doing this podcast, this live stream again. So so you say that, now, shut up. I know we have it waited. Last night we planned to be talked till two in the morning. Last night was five hours. Is that five hours of actual
broadcasting over the course of about six six and a half hours? Uh? Yeah, some some close to there on on both counts. But we've we've been doing pretty pretty long things. But we've had a ton of amazing guests here over the course of the reference. It's not just like because I told people like, oh yeah, we went from like eight till two in the morning, Like what's wrong with you? It's not just all of us sitting there and talking. And so we've we've been rotating in a lot of amazing
guests and last night last night was just volume. There was huge fifteen people in this house at some point. I that sound about right. Of Super Giant Games, Yeah, the entirety and the entirety, almost the entirety of super Giant Games, the entire Johnny V. Posse, Yeah, all our ex Midway chucklehead friends, John Vanaki, Adam Boys, Dave Lang and Krag, Java, Chris Charla, all these cats you know. David Jaffey was here, Jonathan Blow was here, a bunch of double fine guys. Jenova
Chen was here last night. Uh and uh and yeah, and now it's now it's you fucking guys, So carry some weight. Goddamn it. I'm gonna go to the bathroom and check the size of my dick so I don't feel totally Yeah, right, but it's this is the Internet. You just break it out here. Yeah, that's right. We've gotten a rate. I don't want to make only on fridge cam though. Yeah, that's true. You've had all these guests rotating in here, but you've stayed here the
whole time. Of all the ye you were the one. You're the man who was endured. That's true. I've had to endure. But honestly, having you know, six guests here, it allows me to coast. I don't have to sit here and talk the entire time. They're definitely times when I can just sit back and let these people bounce off of each other for a while, but really it's it's Drew manning the cameras back there and making sure the stream is dumbas backslapping when there's still a whole show to do.
No, what tonight show is? I am? I all right, thanks for watching, Thanks for coming out. I am going to do some backslapping for for for Drew and Vinian and Joey are video production crew, without whom we would not have been able to to exec and on E three the way that we have this year and in years past. But I feel like it's it's clicked. It came together in some some really amazing ways, not just with our lives streams and podcast stuff here, but you know, out on
the floor shooting stuff. It's a it's been a lot of fun. We've we've seen a lot of amazing stuff and you know, we we've gotten a lot of great coverage and they've they've helped us encapsulate and capture that stuff. So I definitely want to give them their propers So Drew, thank you. And they can't hear me, but because they're in the back fucking room right now cutting together more goddamn videos for us, so h so Joey and Vinny.
I want to rotate all of them through here at some point, so, uh, so we can talk to them about their experience, because I'll run the switch anytime, because you know, we like we we we spread out as a as a team, and you know, we're seeing different stuff throughout the day. But you know, two of those guys are always somewhere, so they have seen as much stuff as we have, if not more, over the course of this show. So I definitely want to want to
talk to them about some of their experiences. But let's let's talk a little bit about today's show. Jeff Gerstman, it's, uh, you know, as I said earlier, we we didn't have as as action packed a a schedule for the show today, so just mop up and wrap up. Had a few few good appointments that we were saving for the end there, but you know, kind of filling in the gaps, like like, oh, we're some stuff we haven't seen that we probably could get something out of that
would be interesting to people. So it's always it's also a good idea just to leave that room for yourself and you know, just to case, just in case you're like, oh something, Always like he was saying, like, oh man, dog football, you got to see it, which I couldn't find. You could not find the dog football. I think it was next to the to the bounce tent. It was totally the opposite side of the bounce, thankse. I walked past it, and I actually was like
that you knew that instantaneous. Yeah, I'm freelance. I got a lot of time to one dime. I was actually wishing it was Michael Victor football. Let me let me rate it an end. Marcus Beer bringing it. I appreciate that it is the lot of Uh, Jeff, Let's let's talk about some of the stuff that you saw today. Well, let's see, we made our way to Majesco's weird back room so that I could see Hulk
Hogan's main event, which was worth the trip. We did that. So this this is the connect game that that Hulk Hogan was actually at E three. At some point before the show, we got an email that said, like, Tuesday, from two to two thirty, watch Hulk Hogan walk on one hall to the other another. Brother. Yeah, dude, like like they dropped the big leg hall, Like they didn't even have a place for him to be so they just set out this this PR blast, He's gonna
go somewhere. Well, apparently he was doing some interviews at the show, but I don't think he really understood why he was there. I saw Good Morning Law. But it's also been a week for really random celebrity moments. Because I was walking through the Concos area yesterday and some PR guy grabs me and says, do you want to interview Snoop Dogg. We got a similar
request at a certain point and we entertained it. But actually, so the the offer came in right as we were driving up to the Sony press conference, and so it was like kind of like in the middle of a million things and you're pitching us a Snoop Dogg interview. That sounds crazy. Literally, he reached out and grabbed me as I was walking down. He saw the media on my badge, and he they were obviously so desperate to drag
people in. And then actually we sent somebody from Game Trailers, Daniel Bloodworth, who's a really nice guy. He is a white guy. The me. Yeah, and that's saying something. But yeah, so basically we have We watched the interview last night and he Snoop Dog was just like totally chill out of his head. But he'd been obviously asked. Everybody was being prepped to ask about the album, and Bloodworth asked him and the response was shit
and would which I'm not gonna say so I'm being polite. The album has been out for five fucking and swear the fuck of you being on the pool guy's only doing what the and just just deer in the headlights at that point, A fucking Boston. Damn. It was weird. You would you would you would know absolutely, I'm the prototype was there was a weird air of desperation around a lot of weird prs because usually at PR like E three,
everything's booked, like everyone has their appointments. There's like a few weird PR stragglers that are floating and I'm like trying to books. But if you don't have everything, I already like since stepped tight before the show. Too bad. But this year there was a lot of people like roaming the floor looking for media badges, like trolling. For me, it's like, hey, hey, do you want to come see it something like like some alien ware ship and it's like, no, no things to do, I'm not gonna
go see your headphones. No, I don't want to go see your goddamn gaming headphones. I don't want to, Like I don't want a goddamn helicopter. I don't want your goddamn remote control. He tell two separate people, we already have a goddamn remote control too, Yeah, and that that how could they believe that you have? Like with the office, you know, there's just an arrow duation of this year's E three that I have not experienced before. I just it felt like there were a lot of people that were
really needed a lot of coverage they didn't have locked up. Well, there's I mean the sense that I got I kind of rumber around the floor. Like you know, day one, Uh, everything was packed the whole the whole show, Like both halls were just it was it was jam packed with people. It was tough to get around. Kind of your your typical E
three experience. But I felt like by days two and three kind of I guess everyone had had funneled to some specific spots like Okay, Nintendo is crazy the entire show because everyone wants to go and see the we us stuff. They want to get their hands on that stuff, and I imagine there was a fair amount of traffic over at Sony as well to go see some the Vita stuff. But or you know, they're like kind of very specific games. But it didn't seem particularly hard if you wanted to just walk up and
see a lot of the product out there, which they were saying. I think I read like maybe forty five thousands came from game stuff. I used to get up to like sixty five thousand, I think. Yeah, before they started ratching it down, I was there, like, hey, guys, I mean crazy, those aren't those aren't packs numbers right, Like Packs is bigger than that. But but but I'm speaking about just the volume of
people. Yeah, obviously, you know, Packs its own thing. It's open to the public, so you're you're you're gonna have a larger crowd kind of just uh, you know, inherently. And and E three I think has been pretty good. Yeah, the organization has been pretty good about kind of rattling down on people who have just no goddamn business being there. Although you know, again, like we like we spoke a game stop manager,
I want to start up? May I may I bang? Well? Well, like like like we like we like we've spoken, like we've spoken in evenings past here. You know, you can always tell that if someone's walking around with the call of duty elite hat on, or just anyone that has time to like what a bag of stuff hats? Yeah, so I want
to start plan. This is good. All the first spot checkers like if they've got the free bag and and a free hat, and then inside the bag and some other thing, like you just walk up checks and was like how many items you got? Three? Al right out? Yeah, It's like it's like a hunter's license, Like, all right, you're at your limit. That's it. You can't have any more stuff. You're out.
It's the Paul Barnett plan, isn't it Like the heather he was talking about the ginormous bags last year and if you have one of those bags, should be stuffed in it. Yeah. There's there's two ways to check. There's a little more measured the first one. The first way is that the first words out of their mouth, do you have any free stuff? Right? You know there's a problem. And then the second thing is a little thing I like to call smell check. Yeah, yeah, it was. It
was a little assy between the EA and Microsoft booths today. As I was leaving the hall today, uh, I definitely like twelve thirty on Monday, I was walking from my activision to go to see ds X, and the aromas that hit me were coming combination of bo badly loaded clothes, which is always a nice one, smells like this, and then of course the delight of somebody having packed down too many of the chili hot dogs that they sell on the street here in La and it just cropped us did the entire road
all the way to Square Enix. Maybe even worse than that, though, there were a couple of times where I caught just like a like a mouthful of axe, just just just just like someone was compensating hardcore like I did Shower to Dale. Let's just really throw it off, just blanket the whole
body. But maybe they did. They thought they were gonna get one of those booth babes, and and it was just sure there wasn't just an axe booth somewhere where there was across there was actually an axe booth across the way from the South Hall, next to the wall Spraford a segment you want to interview this bottle of axe? Nothing Clearly those are the biggest targeted gamer products.
I say mouthful because it was one of those like walking through whatever this you know, invisible cloud and it was like I can actually taste like chewy. It was, yeah, exactly. It was a texture to the air, like compensating failure. That's right, it's glad. It's a good thing. That was indoors. If anyone had lit a match, it would have just been a fireball in the middle of the U the conventions, Well, there was a bomb scare today for the step Like, what did anyone else?
I just saw a kind of the random Twitter things about there was something happening at the walk back to my car. The cops kept redirected me to various ways to get back to the garage. It was one of those people that got kicked out due to Jeffs plan, like they were pissed that they couldn't get any more free ship. So the one thing, So there's always something, there's always some you know what you're gonna say, gimme thing,
you know, I do. There's always some gimme thing that like, like everyone who's just going there for stuff, like okay, you can always just spot that guy out of the crowd. You know that. Okay, you're an asshole. What it was? It was like this cap that looked like black hair on the top. It was like an orange headband. I don't know what that was for. I saw so many people with that. I
have no it's like some It's like some sweating game, I think. But it was just the taekwondo like connect game where you have literally like a connect sensor and you have to do these taekwondo or judo poses. It was done in the South Hole right in the bottom. I really taught the ship places today. I really really memorized the best part. Well again, I mean my background being PR. I mean I've done so many East threes as a PR person where it's like, all right, where's I booth this year?
Where's I both this year? West Hall, Southhole. I've never done Kent yet, Thank you God. Rest in. No, I'm sorry, Stee. Was it the Target Lounge now? No, it's a garage now? Oh okay, yeah, Target Lounge is just on the concourse there. Yeah, you know what. Oddly, so last year, come in last year and do we have a guest here? I heard a door. We brought beer. We are in the middle of a librage. Please come on in and and take a c and uh and yeah, I think we're good on
beers right now. Yeah, ahead and throw those in the fridge. I feel like a total cheap ship for just turning up with a pack of Mabor lights. Does anyone you want to drink in my water bottle? No, we're all right, No, just get your hand And then we're trying to keep the fridge stock. To the thing that blew me away today just on the vein of free stuff people is like we were you would like the three of us took up shop inside the abandoned badge pick up yea, And this
this was my moment of the show for the day. It was it was outside, so we're outside and the booths are empty, so like Jeff Ryan myself, we're just sitting there check on our phones or whatever. And multiple people came up and asked us like questions about badges or questions about like,
you know, the show about a badge. But the best one was the guy who came up and he was like stay like and I'm just sitting there staring on my phone and I look up at him and he's like, hey, do you know do you know if we're still handing out those free G four bags? And I'm like, no, I don't. He's like, okay, well do you know where they were hanging hanging out those free G four bags? No? I don't. Okay, well do you think you could tell me like where to go where I can maybe ask someone where those
FREEG four bags are? No? I fucking don't. And they finally like walked off, and I'm just like, are you for real? There's ten minutes left in this show and scrambling Sessler's face is in demand. I guess so so so I loved like Jeff and I are seeing their guy comes up and he's like friend, He's like, hey, I don't have my print
out, but I've got my ID. Can I get a holder? And Jeff and I just like sitting there and kind of look at each other, kind of look back forward, and Jeff's like, no, I can't help you. You got to go inside mane and he goes, okay, great, thanks, he runs off and just just like, so not much time left on the show, and I just this is like the last twenty minutes, last twenty minutes. The guy's like, how do you get a bed, I gotta go play some video games? Like what are you go hoping
to? I love? What are you doing? What got him to this point? Yeah? Like how does he have a print out? It's not like, no, he didn't have a rent out. He had his ID. So he's like, he's like, I don't I've got an ID? Can you get You don't think he was ever supposed to go to the show. I think he just was hoping to find some rube who didn't know what was going on with like half an hour left that he could just get in magic Like he's like, yeah, just frobably go in whatever. No,
less hair. The lesson here is never underestimate the power of down Central three two. I didn't play either of them. I thought they were on three. Now now they're on two. It just seems like three Connect just came out last year. Man. Yeah, I know, and it's still a back of they don't put out many games for it, don't get me. Yeah? That was that was That was pretty amazing. But yeah, the
black hat thing, it looked like hair was like a beanie cap. Also, the red wigs, the girls millions and like the animal hats, Scars that or something like like bear bear ears on the top and then go down lots of those. That was the next joint. Okay, fantastic, I was gonna say. So Alex mentioned the concourse area. I feel like usually like a fair amount of like in years past, a fair amount of appointments have been taken up there. I never I never went upstairs, never went
up into that area. Was okay, yeah, yeah, stuff up there. I was up there going like this. Okay. Yeah, is that is that accurate? Is yeah? That is so that game is a mini game collection, but it is the whole whole logan main events. Yeah. So it's like this guy's going to swing a chair at you and you need to go like this to block it. But you have the time your blocks okay, and then you grab the chair and you hit him with the chair. So is it is it like first person? Is it like? No,
No, it's the third person. Different perspectives depending on which minime real like punch Out Arcade kind of vibe to it. Like you don't play as whole Hogan, he's your mentor. So they have used their graphical engine and art style to make a whole Cogan with what's what looks like just the using their character creator to make the Hulkster. He just looks ridiculous and kind of an endearing way. I guess. Does it have the same levels of diet on his bed that you actually see? No, no, no, this
is classic Hogan. It's not the weight belt and beat people with it, Hogan. It is pre PreO was it? Was it suburban Commando health Cogan? And you can unlock that, you know, Yeah, I'm sure they've
got designs for all that stuff. I think I think that no one announces a game in twenty eleven without some sort of DLC plans even and they were saying like, yeah, there was like, oh you know, and you could do all the Hulkster's moves over fifty moves at all, which I want to stop and say, Hogan doesn't moves, but it does include the limited
edition rubbing your daughter's ass with the suntime. It's more like, let's thirty eight, more like four moves, let's say, yeah for the hulk stew But you were you were saying, you were saying like, like it's been in your hands to have your son put someone in a coma. That you were saying that, okay, like maybe not the highest of quality products, but also kind of inoffensive, infensive. It's bumb, but you know what, it's a connect based mini game collection. Fuck do you want? At
least it came up with like a theme for like it it's wrestling. I don't know, it's better than a seventeenth Carnival Games collection. You know, it's like, it's at least it's something a little bit different. True enough. I love that we went and saw the damn BioShock demo and that was the first game you thought to talk about two weeks ago. I know, but come on, we'll start the show with the show style. BioShock demo was awesome. That was amazing. It was the most one of one of
the most amazing things I've seen any three ever. Yes, get the good stuff. I have to say that today I saw the game the game that's going to be the Avatar game of twenty eleven. I mean, and I mean Avatar the movie game. Okay, I saw Tintin today. Oh yeah, is that a winner over at Ubisoft? So the license game they're spending way too much time like trying to get pressed to like, yeah, yeah, it's it's a basically it reminded me of Flashback, you know, the
old Saga Genesis game. That's it. You're you're selling me already, so but it reminded me of that. But Crap Free d Perspective and their big East Free demo involved repeating cut scenes because there was a bug and a dodgy collision detection, and their high point was two player co op where you're on an on Rail's motorbike and sidecar and you get to switch one person kind of steers, one person kind of shoots and mean wild. I mean, I've
had more entertaining craps because I think, let's talk. I you know, I feel like that that whole project, that the Tintin thing. I realized that Tintin is, you know, a big thing in Europe. But that was happening at the press conference when I was like, I was like, I grew up. I grew up reading Tintin. And you know, it's got the it's got the whole you know, Steven Spielberg, and it's got Peter Jackson and it's written by a guy named Stephen Moffett who's now writing Doctor
Who in the UK. Bigod love it and the movie actually does look really cool. It's got some good quality voices. But yeah, this game was just it looks like well, I mean even just pitching that entire property in the US, like just saying like, hey tintin you guys everyone here, it's like it doesn't resonate. Well, no one knows what the fuck that means. They're waiting to add the words rin tint exactly. And actually if they had done a rin tinting game, it probably would have been better.
Just licking your balls with Connect eight hours would have been a more so forgets five, let's talk about ball licking on today. You've built that into a chair. They call it head tracking? What Jeff Gers? Anything else? What else? What else did you see today other than rassling? We went by the catcom booth and hung out there for a while. Saw their wears dog several like Dragons Dogma, which has a a lion with a goat. It's called a chimera, and no it's not. They told me they chimera.
That's what they is. There is a chimera in that game, but that this is this is separate. I had three pet different people in the capcom booth tell me yesterday and now they're fighting the chimera with the lion's head and the donkeys dick and the cat's tail and there's no dicks in my demo demos, you know. Yeah, they had one. They had one demo where we fought a chimera and there was other separate demo where it's a lion with a goat mounted to it attached to it and then snake head for a
tale. Okay, someone explain what the fuck this game is. It's a nightmare like it's it's it's pitched just like like well, like so monster I don't never really caught out over here. So the idea is like this is kind of supposed to be like hey, it's more it's like this is no but you're not going to tell you like, hey man, it's like a monster hunter. You can play by yourself. Like that's never come out of their mouths. But that's kind of what it is like. But but it's
so like what the what the it's it's weird mmo ish looking. I mean, it's kind of pretty looking, but sort of it's like really janky, like really janky. Yeah, and like one of the one of the hooks is that you're supposed to climb onto everything. So they're like, actually one of the decade buns are two is grab and you can grab onto any of the enemies you supposed to get up like like you've seen the trailer, like the big like three headed snake and like it's just to climb up there.
Uh. The thing is like so when you're fighting this, uh this the lion go the snake thing you Right, Well, look I just went on what they told me. I know, I think that they're just crazy. I don't know. The dragons, that's a crazy. That's like you hear that, You're like, okay, Japan, got it. Yeah, some arguments this game meeting and like when you when you when you when you grab on, like the idea of like grabbing ons like go chop off the heads
like that. Okay, that sounds like a cool concept, except like when you grab on, you can't drop off, and so you're like you'll get stuck on the leg and you'll just be going like I need to like at one point, like I was just I was just clipping in the guys in the creatures, we have to wait till the creature goes like it's shaken off.
Is it kind of like you know, like old Spider Man games where they have you doing like the wall crawling and then you get disoriented and you're like climbing up into corners and yeah, I don't know where to go? Can I just needed me on the ground. There's not like it's like it's he's like kind of shadow Colossus asking like you're you know, you're trying to get up these creatures, but they're like really tiny, so like the game
can't figure out what you're trying to do. So like you'll get clipped onto the leg and you're just I'm hitting up with the character, just going like and then just but then just flipping and going on, I can't wait till you see it lays on the audio. Never tell me it would be drinks on a show and you know it's you because that's all. Yeah. Eventually
you'll just hit like diagonal, like you'll finally like get up there. But then but then you're just like on the back and you're just going like, yeah, you just start hitting the attack button and it just becomes like just sticking the sword into it over and over again until one part of it finally dies. And meanwhile, like your NPCs that you're like you got your squad of your posse with its squad base, but but it's not co op. It's just like these weird AI guys are like, I'm going to cast magic.
I'm going to cast magic. I'm going to cast magic. And I say, like, I think the good part is immune to the physical attacks. Don't know some of in Japan's really said. It sounds like a real winner from Capcom. Better it's their most expensive game today. Wait did they tout this bag? Yeah? It is the largest dep team that Capcom has ever had working on a game. Pitch it's Capcom STAB but almost a Western
you know APG. Like they try to tell you that's like maybe it's like a Japanese Oblivion or something like that, trying to do an elder like, I say, they got points for me because they simply had the one thing that I've always hated about capcoming games is the fixed camera angle. They have a free roaming camera on this so good left to them, Uh what I mean obviously, like that's that's maybe not the highlight from the Capcom booth. No, no, no, Smith's on iPad? Is that a Capcom joints?
Yeah, it's a B and Interactive. Is that a movie based Smurf? No, it's not, thankfully, it's like the Smurs miss farm Bill and it's free. But I got told the story that it was released and parents were getting very angry because they were downloading it given their eye pads to their kids and the bike Smurthberries button was not password protected. All of six and seven hundred dollars iTunes bills were coming in and people were not happy.
That seems problematic? What else? What else with cap Comte street Fighter Cross Technyeah, you know, kind of talked about this game a few times. Got to play that with Brad for a while, So now there's someone else who understands how weird and kind of cool this game is. Yeah, you know, it's it's they're taking the Street Fighter for Engine basically and trying to
cramp techn characters in it, and then they're largely successful doing that. Like the teching characters, they don't feel purely like techn characters, but they feel interesting to play in that environment, and you know, they've they've done some interesting things with the way that you can Joe Old characters and stuff like it's
very different from Street Fighter. So in a way, like if you're if you've learned the rules of Street Fighter, it almost feels broken, like a hacked game or something like that, like a you know, Street Fighter two Championship Edition, Rainbow Edition, the weird hacks that would let you throw fireballs in the air exactly exactly. So are they giving easy I guess I actually I don't think I've asked this question for Are they giving projectile attacks to the
tech and character. No, they're giving like sways and and like low rushes that you under or around projectiles to a lot of those guys. So there's there's like a really distinct feel like kind of a split between the two groups of characters. Well sort of. I mean, the combo system is kind of the same for both, so if you're getting close, you know, you're still kind of working your way up like medium heavy, and you know it's a tag game, so you can kind of tag mid combo and continue
combos. It seemed like they're even trying to balance it. The game is even coming out until next year, so I don't think they have to worry about that yet. I think right now, it's like, let's get all these characters again, make it fun, and then make it fair. So, yeah, I think they'll eventually address that, and you know, who knows, maybe they'll have to come out with some come up with some kind of combo breaker system like Mortal Kombat as just to like take some of the
burden off of them, to balance it properly. And this is like, well, we give we give them an escape hatch, we give them like an emergency like panic button things, because it seems like they're so divergent that at some point you kind of said, like the characters are just like their own personalities, how much can you do? But at the same time, like the tech And characters have been given things like well, techn characters have
dragon punches. You know, it's just they work a lot differently in the tech And series because of the nature of that game, but in this they work like dragon punches and such. So they're adapting tech In moves to this kind of two D plane really effectively. They aren't projectiles, so no, you know, not not every character and street Fighter is a projectile character,
so they kind of fit in on that level. Actually, uh, way more interested to see the other game, Yeah, has not had like a lot of success gener ration and putting out like a fighting game that gets like anyone excited. So I'm super curious to at least stateside like that. Like the Damko stuff has has a certain cache in Japan for sure, but it's
it's it's it's no street Fighter even there. So yeah, and if only because like I'm curious to see like kepcoming Namco b with like they publicly said like, hey, we're not looking at each other's games, we're touching them.
I don't know how true that is or if that's just meant to be like how they're portraying it publicly, but I am just squeally interesting to see what they like, if they how far it swings in the tech and direction for the street Fighter care right, because there are fundamental things about tech and
that breaks too, like the Break street Fighter. It's the same problem that Mortal Kombat had when it went three D, is that if you're throwing fireballs at someone and they can just step out of the way, fireballs become almost completely useless in a lot of cases. So it's you know, how do you you know, manage that stuff? How do you make projectiles matter in that sort of game? And Techan does have like a couple of projectiles, but you know, they're just weird kind of throwing in. This guy can
shoot laser beams out of his eyes and that's about it. But anything else that the capcom Booth, Relations of Things, Revelations. Yeah, that's that's the one that's out next year. That's the three DS game The Mercenaries Won, that's out next month. This is the story driven there's there's I think, I think, I think this is really just the demo that was on. Mercenaries came out in Japan and has a short demo friends, it's different.
Apparently the demo you were playing is longer than the one that was on It's about like five minutes versus ten minutes. Yeah, but yeah, I mean it looks gorgeous. What is the what is the I guess a story driven game like what is five? Essentially Ukay, at some point you didn't know where Chris Redfield went. He has some coordinates in the middle of the ocean, and Jill Valentine follows to find out what happened. Due Chris the middle the ocean, you're and it's kind of funny. The demo opens and
Jill is like, is it code Veronica again? A Zombie Boat. I would see these water based enemies, so like when you kill them, they sort of disintegrate into the ground. That's not really explained how or if they're
connected Zombie Boat, which was that'd be a good movie. Yeah, but yeah, set on a boat, right, Yeah, Well it's what's kind of what's kind of cute though, is that it starts and Jill wakes up and you're in this room and it kind of looks like it's kind of modeled after the mansion from Reside Evil one, and she goes, I feel like I'm in a mansion, and then but then you find out you're on a
boat. Who says that? Yeah? Someone actually everyone I woke up here and said, like, I feel like I'm in in a mansion, I would say someone very someone from Reside Evil one. That's you know, something scripted by Capcom Japan and then translated wake up on a boat and not realize they're on a boat. I'm the master of feeling like I'm in a mansion. This mansion is moving back and forth. I'm in an l a ansin.
But the game itself feels like ohs and Evil, which means I really am am not that interested, but in terms of what it does, uh for like showing up the processing power of the three DS, like character models are just absolutely gorgeous, and it actually does some pretty interesting use of the of the three D given that you have like a giant character model that is sort of what's popping out at you and so that that's kind of the three
D part as you're following behind that to look at the enemies. But yeah, otherwise it's kind of the same reside Neila tropes that. Like, it's the reason I stopped playing five, like three hours in, and I think I'm just not that interested in playing another game in that in that formula.
Yeah, but it feels like I mean when you say like, it feels like Resident Evil Ill on a handheld on a handheld form and I I can't tell if that means like you're talking like old Resident Evil or kind of the you know, so yeah, but just it's that, Yeah, I mean, it's it's still if you if you enjoyed Five like I I didn't, but if you are still cool with that formula, then you know, Revelations is right, really and it's going to fill in some story gaps that,
uh, I guess had not been filled. I didn't finish five, so I don't know what those gaps are. But it's what if there was a boat zombies on looking boat now we're talking, wouldn't all you have to do is just sink the boat? You just suck my boat. Sorry, I seem like that sank my battleship. Jeff. After that, you and I went and saw Ridge Racer unbounded? Did we totally did see that. We did, Alex, you were there as we were. We were so unbounded,
we were unbounded as So that's that's Bugbears making that. It's the flat out guys, and that is that game looks like a a kind of a a slurry of of burnout and split second ideas that they've Yeah, I mean, it'd like to be clear like it has nothing to do with Ridge Racer. Yeah, and the chicken in it. There are cars, there is drifting. Well, the chick is in the trailer, she's not in the
game, but I mean the game, it's cars. They were clear about saying like this has nothing to do with Ridge, like like literally it said it's not any you never they were maybe things like this is this does not take place in Ridge City Universe. I was sitting there going like City Christian, Peter Barthlow is here in the house with a mystery beer boss kind of beer. Bring it on in, keep it place, point on it, keep it coming. I know who you are and Brad Shoemakers and the limit
you need to go. That's it. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. It's just like Cowboy, Okay. Absolutely, would you like an interesting fact? I don't think there's any more room without fridge. We just give it all the metage. Yeah, what's that? Don't ask questions? Yeah, don't ask those kind of questions, Peter Barthlow. We have an excellent view of your butt on camera right now, so perfect perfect location for that. You leave the beer. Did you bring a fridge to replace this one? Yeah,
you're not a very good fridge either, Christian. Put put beer in you it just gets warm and turns into piss on speak. Experience showed him. You know interesting fact about interesting fact about flat Out? Well, it's totally interesting to me because that was actually the first game on launchte ending. So I like the flat Out games like they're kind of weird that they've always
kind of wouldn't been like a second tier series. But they're crazy and they try, you know, really bizarre shit with their physics, and they also make the best drinking games ever. That was the whole thing, those those physics based mini games. When you're trying to inject that little guy out great. You know, if you miss the bullsight, you do a shot. If you hit the bullsight, you do two shots. We had some great night's play testing that game up for ending. Leave it to the Finns,
right, but but are they they're finished? But you know, I we had no idea really what to expect from that game because they had shown a couple of pre rendered trailers beforehand and it just looks weird. Yeah. Yeah, but so the the Unbounded is a gang in the game, right, called the Unbounded, called the Unbounded, and you're like a junior member of the Unbounded and you're trying to work your way up. You have to bound
them up in the end of the game. By the end, yeah, it's a lot of cop and you're all bound it's it's a lot of it's a lot of kind of that that that action racing stuff where you're you know, blown other cars off the track. You're tearing through the environment a lot of just like crashing through building. Yeah, you're playing it like burnout.
You're doing near near misses and and and doing all that sort of stuff, streaming drift to fill up a gauge, and then when that gauge is full, you can get the A button to kind of activate a charge which will give you a speed boots. I'll kind of hut you forward a little bit there, and if you're you know, heading towards a building that has the you can blow this up icon, you will drive through it as a shortcut
or something, or you can just do that into cars to destroy. You can also create traps for other other like it's it's it's it's all situation. All depends on where you are on the tracker type. I thought it looked pretty sharp like that. Graphically, it looked it looked pretty good again, like you know, kind to be honest, kind of derivative as far as like what they're showing gameplaywise, certainly, but not derivative of a bridge racer.
No. Yeah, so so I which I'm all four, Like I know that there's kind of that game needs to have the ability to do three sixty drifts spins through building. That's the one ridge racer thing they need to bring back. It's just like some ridiculous three sixty like driftings. Well, they're still a ways off with that game, it sounded, and perhaps with your one of your user created tracks, Yeah, you can build that. So so they're talking about this is taking place in was it Shatter Bay?
Say so, so that's the city that takes place in. And then they're like, okay, this is the city that you know the game is in. But then users can create their own cities. And they didn't actually show any mechanics, so that it was kind of a little pre rendered bit.
But the I the idea that that that I took from this was that they're gonna have these tile sets for these cities of kind of like block areas that you can then go and create your own cities and create you know, your your own tracks in this format and then you know, chair them and other people can race on them, and and and so on and so forth. They didn't want to talk about it. We shot an interview, and you
know, they weren't really taking anything to me. I mean, like, that's that's certainly what it looks like it's the most interesting thing about that product. It's it's you know, the gameplay looked. We didn't touch it at all, but the you know, visually it looks sharp. You know, there's there are no kind of that. There are no Bird Out games announced right now of that nature. Like there's the crazy downloadle but whatever the fuck
that's going to be the show with the lobster with the Lobster monsters. Uh, and you know, split Second is done. You know, Disney doesn't seem like they're going to be doing anything with that and anymore so I I when I saw them, like, yeah, you're filling a gap. There's nothing else that's really doing this right out, like go for you guys.
Interestingly, though, while you get the graphical damage as you drive through layer after layer of building and concrete pillar, it doesn't affect your car's performance one
a out And they said that's a conscious decision they've made. While your car will just get graphically messed up, you can still hit the same speed, you can still put you know, drift and do everything even while you're practically like three wheels and an exhaust and somebody's leg hanging out the point of that, Yeah, it just needs to be fun, like like that pulls on the left. No one wants to do that in that style of racing game,
Like that's for a simulation. So sorry, but wouldn't it be even funnier and more ridiculous just the car is just totally still glossy and shiny throughout all that stuff. Oh well, well the visual damage. I think it's just fun. It's cool to break like it when shit gets fucked up.
Yeah, just ask Limp Biscuits given their track record dropping soon. Would it wouldn't have been better that, you know, your car gets so fucked up that there is some really random physics stuff like a wheel is bouncing off and you're literally bound bouncing up and down as you as you're going on just axles, or you know, you know, half your leg gets ripped off. I mean, where's the really leg apart? Seriously? I mean, way,
if you're gonna go for comedy, bodily organs must be lost. Yeah, I mean never did they did show like there was a you know, one one one of these little kind of like trigger areas where you're basically plowing through this. It was like a truck or something, or maybe just a uh, I get carols, but there's a bunch of like a giant you
know, gas tanks, like compressed gas tanks plowed through. Then they go rocketing off into the air and are and just kind of like cause these crazy explosions out in front of you with this bridge down right as you as you
drive under it to kind of block the path. So it's kind of just these insane chain reaction moments in the game that that you know, they looked they looked nice, and I realized that, yeah, there's this crazy, this obsessive knee for purity and the same thing fucking over and over again with with whatever the Ridge Racer audience is anymore, I'm not even sure is no, I'm not even sure. Yeah, Like it's that what the audience is.
That's what Namco does. Yeah, I guess. So I don't think the audience is necessarily we don't tell you it is the most exciting year for Ridge Racer in over a decade because look at the two games they've got. They've got one that's like not even a Ridge Racer game to me, Well, it's just like a touch screen Blake put the other fingers like that, got it? Can we get a genre page on Giant Bomb with that contains
dub steps. We can definitely do a wobble based concept of page. No, we cannot do not give people suggestions for ship pages and it's already made, assholes. Sorry. So yeah, anyway, Unbounded, it looks interesting, way more interesting than the trailers looked, that's for sure. Definitely, And I would like to see more of that game down the road. Get it because the road because it's a car ah yeah, man, And then he three's over baby Less party and then after that you went and did your
your Ken Lavine interview. Hows Ken? It seems like he's doing really well. We talked about some of the things he said at the press conference, talking about, you know, putting move support in that game and uh and getting to be a guy that gets to pull something out of his pocket at a press conference, going to be that guy, getting to do a little bit of theater, as he put it, because he didn't really have much to say about it other than we're doing something for this here it is and
yeah, so all you know, all those announcements seem incredibly early. You know, he didn't you know, he didn't have answers for questions like so, what are you gonna do with the mover the move wand in this game was like no, you know, we're gonna We're gonna do some experiments. I mean, it seemed like all all that announcement at or you know, all when his presence at that Sonny press conference, all that amount of two is like we are looking into this stuff, like we are not just discounting
this stuff, you know, wholesale. Uh it did it also just gonna kind of sound like they were committing to we're gonna make something on the Vida Like that is like, yeah, that's a that's a game, and it sounds like that that's a game that they've been talking about for a while, uh conceptually, you know, just while they're working on this game, thinking like man, it wouldn't be cool if we did this other thing and and didn't really have a place for it, And when the Vida came along,
it was like, well, you know, maybe we have an opportunity to do it here. So that's what they're gonna do from the sounds of it, So do it on another system that nobody's gonna buy. Yeah, So interview forthcoming video interview forthcoming from from Kent on that. Yeah, uh and uh. We We then spent some time dancing all right, we play, Yeah, we play a little Dance Central two did a little Dance Central two
h like a G six. Unfortunately Power by Kanye West is not in that in that build, I'll say, maybe I'll end up in the final game. Yeah, I definitely that. I let the folks on Harmonics know, you know, hey, you know, I think they're saving that for the mash up with Folsa Need Need. You got to be get out of your car and Dance Central Needs Needs ghost Writing mini game and finally we've what we've all been winning for. But while we were grab asking over there Dance two,
Patrick Klappick, you were up to some business. What's what's going on with you? I was interesting? New people. They're coming into our place, Oh fantastic, And how you doing? So? Were three Industries? Way to wrap the stained shirt? I like it. You're at Roscoe's. Yeah, all right, forgiven that, it's almost worse that you told us that. Yeah, we didn't go to Rosco's at all. We just we
just we did oven lasagna. We barely we we we did the hardcore route between this house and the center, trying to convince myself that Evan's and like this is edible. I'll be down in and out at least no getting out, like I'm my away from the house. I don't care whatever. It's a it's a hamburger. What we're saying? What else? What did you do? Would you do? Today? Do you do? Who let you in here? I don't know. I can't even get into the show.
I'm not even eighteen. Definitely, that definitely didn't you know. We were talking about the sun yesterday. That definitely didn't stop people today, like the the average age. I felt like plummeted at the show today, like there was like, oh, day three, they're not even really checking the badges. Yeah, it's like I can't get him. Whatever. Babies walking around
unsupervised all over the goddamn place. I actually do have a picture. I tweeted this yesterday of some guy walking around with his two year old toddler on his arm. I saw that. I actually mentioned that the other day. I thought that was just gross. That's yeah, unfair to baby, unfair to people, and unfair to the kid. I think if you bring a child into eighty three, he was under seventeen. You fullfit that child, and we get to sell them on the bay fucking harsh, and that child
gets to generate assets for Star Wars. The old Republic shut them off. That's it sounds like personal hell, that's I want no part of that people. You guys. We need someone here, Guys, guys, I'm not going to convince you this game as any I'm just I'm too tired. I just I can't show you a trailer. Roll the trailer because he could be even worse. They could send them to miss the caffeine camp. Oh god, I saw someone posted that guy's website and I didn't go to it.
Where where is Lull's sec? And they're hacking brigade? And when it was seriously, seriously shut that guy down. Take care of this guy, Patrick Kapic, run me through your day. Uh So I started out women saw bishock, but a lot of talked a lot about that. I mean, it looks looks great. I look the other way they I'll only make the comment that I love the way they do the demo, which is, hey, here's the game. They showed the game for ten minutes. Yeah,
and you go out, get the fuck out. Yeah, I have a personal distaste for demos that sort of talk over the entire thing and break down every single mechanic that they're showing to you as though you have never played a game before and you can't figure out kind of what's going on. I don't mind a little instruction, but yeah, it's the carnival barker thing is not cool. Like as you can see here, that's and death. Of course, they topped that by giving you a power point beforehand. Here's how many
games we sold. Here's this game. Here's what's happening on screen. So this is the fucking This is the pie shot of the fun in the first game. And as you can see, we've upgraded the fun level by twenty three percent just for this one. And when we had downloadable content, because we do have a full downloadable gun strategy, what are you gonna add seventeen percent more fun taking it to two hundred ninety six percent more fun. It's going to be fun. I like fun. I'm gonna like this game.
I'm gonna order this game. That sounds great. Yeah, and then then uh, sward a little time to check around. So I went to uh, I have not played Demon Souls but Dark Souls is there, and one of the uh, Jeffrey on the trench team, he was telling me like, you should just go check it out, if only because if you go he pointed out the specific kiosks to me that you can grief the other players,
so you don't have to play the game. You can just go in and fucking just beat the ship out of the other people that are trying to learn this game at these kiosks. So I just went to that kiosk and like, I don't know how to play this game. I just knew how to stab the sword, and so I'm just walking around just stabbing people. And you can see like the eight kiosk, so you can see the people
that clearly don't know what they're doing. Like some people were like, hey, you know, I know Demon Souls want to come out check Dark Souls. I was trying to find the people that were like, you know, I've heard a lot about this game, I want to learn how to play it, and I would just stab them and then you just have to immediately start. Just the people are like, hey, these kiosks are open and
this is a game. I should play something. But it was like everyone was hungover, so like there was no one anywhere in this hall, I just and I would just find the one guy and then I would just wait till he respond, and that would just stab him in the back. So he created the role from the south Park like World Warcraft south Park episode, like the guy who just runs around killing everyone's characters. That's all. I'm
not gonna be a game for me. I'm not gonna play this game, so I'm gonna enjoy my my Kiosk demo by just really just ruining this one guy's time. Was trying to enjoy this game. That was little shit.
Yeah, you know, I've not played much Demon Souls, but that sounds exactly like Demon Souls like like, and it actually encouraged me, like if I can buy that game just to ruin other people's time like that, because like, actually playing that game sounds like no fun at all, But if I can just like kind of just just really defeat other people enjoy just monkey
wrench everyone else's time. Yeah, So it didn't that really quickly, and then uh, I kind of decided to we're the one to check some but that's the stuff out I hadn't seem prey too, and what brad Hamant talking about Prey two sounded like really fucking awesome. Yeah, And I finally got a chance to check that out, and it is I played a little Dayo Sex Revolution. We've got to build in the office, and it's no questionable yea, and I Dato Sex is my absolute favorite game of all time,
and so I'm been really looking forward to something like that. And so when I saw that game, I like, I'm like, Okay, I don't have the history with the Data Sex series. So when I've seen on this, I'm like, Okay, maybe maybe I'm missing something. Maybe this is like if I love Data Sex and I see this and I played, say, I'm like, oh, this is you know, calling back and feeding
into all these things that were great about the regime. But it's it's like, you look at like this kind of antique the things about this game that feel old, that feel clunky. It looks more like a brand new team that was given uh this this franchise with a lot of history and make new tools, new technology, new studio, and then also build on a sequel that was a sequel to like Dao Sex two was already a bad game, and then try and create it, so anyway, that's that's neither either are
there. The Prey Too is absolutely my favorite game I saw at the show. Wow, absolutely it is. It is a spiritual successor to what made Dato Sex a great game, which is player agency and that when you you it's it's an open world approach it how you want. I disliked Prey in every capacity, but Prey To is just absolutely incredible, an open world blade
runner. Like I know, I've talked on the BombCast earlier this week about how I'm tired of guns, but what's great about this game is it's, yeah, you're shooting people, but it has the verticality, the speed, the motion, the sense of scale of an Assassin's creed game, of a Mirror's Edge game combined with an open world, uh sort of mission structure,
and it's just it's just so it's just so cool. Also, what I loved is your gun is always holstered and you have to actively trigger it to come out, so it is meaningful when your gun is out if you're not just it's not just the first person shooter troup where it's like there's just this gun and that's right, that's my avatar around the world holster the gun.
But it's like if you if you cite your gun at someone, but they do so they show a specific instance in the Prey two demo where you're you're going up to get some information from this like crime lord or whatever, and you're presented initially when you talk to him, it says I'm not going to give you the information, and you either say okay, or you have to
pay two thousand credits. So you can say fine, I'll go find two thousand credits or no, and then you're able to take your gun out, shoot the bodyguard next to him, and then he gets freaked out and says,
all right, final, I'll give you the information. Uh, and then you But but but what's great is that you could have either you could have just said fine, I'll go get the two thousand credits, come back you would have given it to you, or you could have blown both of them away and then the mission you would just would have failed the mission. But just I I love that sort of structure, or also just being able
to just funck with the environment. Like there's beggars that are asking for money and then like you could pull a gun up to them and they'll just scatter off. Or there was a show there was a guy just hanging out a ledge and just be a dick, just knocked him off, hit him in the face, and there's like this sposting security system that says like don't kill
more people. No, you said like mission failure. But in this, in this style of game, I imagine that just means like it's not it's not like okay, reset bag's like okay, that's this is going to come about this quest some other or you know, you have to go do something else, like like it's it's it's like that's the end of that quest line because you killed this dude. You can't pursue that path anymore. Yeah,
you just move on to the next thing. And the only thing that gave me a little worries that they mentioned Tommy like four or five times during their presentation. They were like yeah, they're like so they're the setup for the game is like, you know, the connection to Pray is that you're you were on that aircraft or the plane that crashed in you saw like a little sequence of Prey one and you're this us Marshall. I don't remember that at
all. I don't remember either, And so you play this a little sequence where you get out and then all of a sudden, it's like flash forward a couple of years later, and the game's about you trying to, you know, discover your memories why you became like this skilled bounty hunter. What does all on? Fine, that's a good way to like start you out with skills instead of having to learn them. But they're like, and you're to work with Tommy through most of the game, And I'm like, is
that really what I say? I thought it sounded more like when I got that demo, I came away from thinking like, oh, Tommy will show up a couple of times. No. Like they they're like, you've had a relationship with Tommy the entire time that you were unconscious. He is a central character in the plot. Uh okay, So that scares me a little bit. Yeah, I don't mind if they can do it, well, it's fine, that's fine. Sure. I mean everything else with the game
looks just really you just like, forget Prey one and Tommy. They probably are doing that too, because it knows what Tommy will be like when you see him. I've heard nothing but amazing things about this game. That the trailer, which seems to kind of at least you know, it's it's pre rendered. The trailer gives a really great it's absolation of the actual gameplay, right, and it it seems like it kind of proves out a lot of
the ideas that were actually in this gameplay demo. If you'll allow me to just nitpick for just one second, Yes, I cannot stand the nit cap
on the on the main character. And I realized that when you're actually playing that game, you you'll never knew that that game No, but it's it's it's in all of the imagery that they're showing for that game, and I feel like they're otherwise, like they're trying to have this space western kind of vibe and I don't know, it's it's just like two Williams or a hipster for you, or like what it is. I don't know, I don't
know. I don't know. It's it's it's such, it's such as it's something, it's something that I saw it It bothered me, and I realized that it's petty and minor and a head. It's just a piece of armor that you can replace. It has, It has no impact on the actual game. But but yeah, I'm excited to see more of this game for it's just a really interesting game. I love it. It reject everything about Prey and it's kind of like it sounds like a lot of ways the game
that Human Head wanted to make. I mean, but it was the three D Realms project, given that we're talking about, like dude, New Forever is coming out, Like Pray was something that was in development at that studio years and years ago when Tom Hall was working there, and portal technology was something that was supposed to be part of Prey back in the nineties, so like that was a legacy game like this, this just sounds like Human ed
Win in a completely new and interesting direction. And I just that was the crazy thing to me from Wing it would be a reminder of like, oh, yeah, this is Human Head, the guys who who developed or at least you know again finished Pray. Uh, Like this is this is that same studio again? Yeah? Yeah, and you you would not know if I'm looking at the game. Yeah, like it's it's this seems like some
sort of like Triple A studio out of nowhere. But you know, this game has been a long time contract work all these years just to like stay afloat while while building those things. I guess like Pray came out kind of a while ago. Yeah, that was that was That was like the year after the three sixty launched. There was like it was after like there's the big drought, there's like Oblivion came out and it was like there's nothing to
play and that came out that summer. Yeah, and everyone like didn't really like it, but it was like, well, it's serviceable enough given that there's mething else to play, so just shoot up some vagina into Yeah, so that game looks great. I absolutely like it pushed all my buttons, like I love Blade Runner of pulpy sci fi and the fact that it's an open world and I Mirror's Edge, Assassin's Creed, like the vertical scale,
like just yeah, how does it? So? Was this just a demo where you were actually playing the game or wasn't actually playing, but you know it was a real time demo with about twenty minutes. How did How did the traversal stuff looks? Because that always worries me in the first person, Well, traversal stuff is really great because they addressed it in a couple of different ways. So like they give you a lot of like, uh, different ways to ascend. So they have like you know, grapples, and
you can you can jump very high. But one thing they addressed like, so we give you a lot of games, give you a lot of ways to go up. The hard part is getting down because games are always like,
well, when you jump, you're gonna die. So they actually give you like little boosters on your feet, right, so you can jump from at any point at no matter of the height, and you can just you know, hit those boosters their last second because when you the chase sequences, these people are gonna be going over trains, they're gonna be jumping across buildings. They have teleport technology, so you have to have the ability to keep
up with them. And uh yeah, they just they they've addressed it in every way possible that it makes it fun to go up and down and it's just constant movement, constant movement, and that's and I love games where you're always moving and you're not worried about hiding behind objects. You you know, just you just go over it and it's just it is a real sense of flow. And actually BioShock had the same sense of with the with Skyhooks.
I love games that you're always moving, you're just constantly doing something. You have something to interact with. And at the same sense, it's not like it's like, Okay, I'm in a combat center and I just kind of eke my way forward for this thing. Get like like like a cover based game where you're just like you just wait behind cover, so you have an opportunity and you're just like pop up, pop up. Like these games are
very much like just keep moving, go somewhere else. If you're gonna go up, you're gonna go down, like you just you always have another opportunity to do something else. So was a good excellent anything else the epithet? Or or was that what you were there for? That was pretty much there when I was there for. And then I saw a ninja guy in three and that has a lot of quick time events. Great, but but like it has it like you know, button prompts on screen quick time events,
but it's it's all happening so goddamn fast in that game. Y, it's pretty much irrelevant that it's it's sort of like I'm already hammering this button because it's the attack button. It's like there's you know, the two attacks. There's kind of you know, a light and heavy kind of setup. So it's like, yeah, I was already hitting square when you prompted me to hit square. It was it was just weird. It's like I like I interviewed like the guy who was uh works on Team Ninja and he helps like
localize they're they're different. He's when with teammateging for a while. She's localized a bunch of Team Ninjas products, and it was like, because you know
Itagaki has gone. So this is Hayashi who had I had worked on Metroid other m. So he's kind of like the de factor lead a Team Ninja now and say, isn't like the game is really bloody and like Ninjaden one and two were as well, but this one is just like likes dozers And I was like, so material sprays, like what is like what and he was like and he has to really transcrib the answer, but like he described
like they have like this skin and bone technology. They want to create emotional resonance in the game because like when you kill people in a game, like
what are you doing with your life? So so there be the series is like like when you're like, there'll be times where like the game will just slow down, and like when you're slicing through, like you slice real slow because they just want you to feel the crunch of the bones and slicing slicing through the skin and the muscles, and they have like a specific technology for it. They're like, I can't remember which it was. Add on that
just sounds gross. Dragons dragons, Dogma dragons fair enough, Sir H Marcus. Anything today that you've seen at the show that well, I obviously BioShock, Yeah, that was I saved that as my last demo of the show. I wanted to sort of like go out on a high, especially after my wasted time at Ubisoft, and I was just I was blown away. I was actually disappointed when the demo ended and I walked out knowing that it's going to be a good twelve months before I actually get to put my hands
on this game at least. Yeah, I mean at least they're saying the fall of next year. And it was obviously very polished and you could see that you know they'd worked on this particular segment for months and months. But if they can do that with the rest of the game. I mean, that's that's something that could just rewrite the record books. I honestly like watching that demo, I had a hard time believing that is something a human being
can play. You know. It's just like there's so much going on, there's so much chaos, like all the stuff, like, well, it's it's stuff that they're working on, it's something they're they're very you know, no I when I say that, I mean it's just like it was. It was kind of awe inspiring in the way that like, you know,
you know, it's a live demo. You know, someone's playing. But usually usually it's like the like there's certain things where like the you know, the kind of the phase technology, like the phase stuff that they're they're doing with the with Elizabeth's hairs and the tears exactly where it's like, Okay, there's a button promp, there's a there's a gameplay system, there's like a
button hold for this other thing for kind of choice stuff. Yeah, but there's a lot of stuff where the gameplay systems aren't apparent and you're so used to like, okay, you can you can kind of see and break down like what the moving parts are behind the scenes a lot of that demo, And I think it's what's really impressive about that, like, like you're saying, Alex, is the fact that it's it's not apparent kind of like yeah,
like what's the trigger? Am I walking past this thing? And and it's kind of a fucked up thing that you're thinking about it in that way that you're like your first look at it is like it's like all right, like you know, how is you know, like what is the mechanic here? Like what's the system? It's not just sort of like what's the experience? But I felt like a lot of that demo feel it's you know, a lot of the stuff with the skyhook is going to be based on destination.
You know. It's like when you see that little icon on screen, as as you look around the environment, you know, you'll you'll see it on other rails that you can connect to if you if you hit the button at that point, you know, spots on the ground if you want to dismount and uh and things like that. So you know that that's kind of how they're addressing you know, like that sort of movement. But yeah,
it does seem like it's could be something to be very difficult. You know, if you're up way high and you know there's rails down below, it's like, how do you convey that to the player. And it's one of those things that, yeah, it's you know they're tackling just by getting to
where they've gotten with the skyhook. It makes it It sounds like this is one of those hard problems where they know in like in their head, how they want it to go, but you know, figuring that out and actually making that into a full fledged gameplay system, you know, it is still a work in progress. And yeah, I think that you know, there's some things in that demo it's kind of hard to tell which parts a person is pushing a controller and which parts are basically like cut scene if they are
taking taking movement away. Sure, I think that's something if you if you do watch the demo, which I hope they put this demo out so everyone can see it, it is really worth checking out. But you know, there are moments in where there's no radical right that that to me says this is the part you're not playing this bit of this s guy hook does seem that that you're gonna need a little guidance, a little look like there was
like like a white circle. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. That's when you if you get to dismount and other sort of but I mean specifically, like when you're walking and Elizabeth has taken off to find this horse, like the radical disappears for a while because I don't think you're in control anymore at that point, at least direct you to where the next sequence is going
to start. Yeah, for some of those things, but but by and large, it looked like that there was someone in control of of all that stuff, the Skyhoak stuff specifically. One of the things that this strikes me though, is the Elizabeth character. There's nothing I hate more than they give you a character and you have to babysitter and the fact that this this girl is you know, can manage yourself and you don't. Here she doesn't want
to be baby savvy. Yeah, you have to get her out, but the freedom not to worry about her allows you to jump on a skyhook, scoot up and down, jump into a building, jump into an ash ship, blow that shit out, come back down, and she's just you know,
she's still Then she's obviously somebody who can take care of herself. That's a weight off because so many people it's like, you know, it's just such a cop out when all right, well you can't go more than twenty feet from the person you're doing the escort mission, right, Yeah, it's like it's like it's what helped ruined Space Sims. Yeah, the escort mission. You know, no one wants to play an escort mission. That part was insane of the idea of like, wait, like that's that's the person
that clearly I need to be keeping tabs on here. But you know, I'm getting pretty far away from her when going through that hole. But if you pay attention to her through that sequence, like she is straight up like vox popular guys are coming up to her, and she's like being over the balls and taking out taking care of business. Yeah yeah, absolutely, But
but but it doesn't shoot everybody either. It's that distance thing though. It's it's like like markt was saying, it's like you're used to just like if you have like an AI squad, if you have a companion or sometimes they are just fucking attached at the hip at all times. Yeah, and even in that sequence, like when he gets onto that skyhook to go take out of Zeppel, and there's straight up a line of dialogue that hey, stay here, right so I can go take off and deal with this stuff literally.
Actually you're coming back down. You do see her kneeing some guy in the balls. I wonder how much of that will, like, like, how much of that dynamic dialogue or if it is dynamic, will play into when you're actually playing the game, Like, because when they stay here, I mean, of course they've scripted this demo or these at least they set
up this demo to do grow a specific way. How much of that will play into when you're actually It sounds like there will just be things in this game that they are writing that if you don't end up doing some things in the game, you won't see them, like that the part where she's wearing the Lincoln head and stuff. If you don't go kind of poke around this store and dig through all this stuff, like, you're gonna miss that stuff.
It almost seems like the equivalent of the audiologue or something. You know, there'll just be things that if you don't explore every nook and cranny, you're not gonna get every bit of dialogue. The audiologue is actual, like scripted interesting experiences rather than being sort of like little pickups. Yeah, and then I mean that's I like that book or to what speaks, Yeah, I like that. I like the way he speaks and stuff. Yeah about
Roscoe's and Scratch. Yeah, but yeah, the other I mean that's what you see an example that in that demo, like when you're about to go to where the Vox popular, I've kind of taken over that section of town. You can either split off and she said, as we can either go get more supplies or we can go straight to the house, straight to Comstock house. Right. Yeah, so there's like two like if you probably if you go that other path, there's probably some other stuff you can do before.
You know, in that demo, you are stopping in execution. You don't necessarily have to stop it and ask you you want to do this? Hey, what happens if you don't because the rest of the action and that demo is predicated on you having stopped that execution, right, And they wouldn't they wouldn't talk about this. Yeah. I think it's just see how Elizabeth would have reacted that given when the horse was dying, how freaked out she was that if you'd let that guy be executed, what would have been the
reaction? Where would that have taken you? That would be probably more interesting than showing you a gunfights. Well, one of the things, uh, the talking to Ken Levine about it, you know, he seemed very very quick to say, like, she's not going to be like the angel on your shoulders saying like we need to save these people. Uh, you know, because she needs to get out of there. She needs to learn more
about herself and figure it out. So there's gonna be moments where she's like turning to you going like, oh shit, this is like sort of the we're looking each other figuring out what the hell are we gonna do here? No easy answers, you know that that's that's kind of the the idea of putting you into these uncomfortable situations seems like what the crux of that game is going to be, as as you know, because it's because you're in the
middle of this war between these two factions on Ridiculous Sky City. Yeah, and and I think between that and and the fact that they're willing to show that tear in that game and where it takes you this early's a lot about where that game can go. And that's like even like you could theoretic they walk into those tears. Yeah, yeah, you might. You probably won't spend your entire time in this game on Columbia. Yeah, but god, I love the look of Columbia. Got it. Got it? Just like
the like irrational the ability to like conceive and realize these worlds. Just the how just when they're walking around, how far you can see, how much of it you can see it at any given moment in that demo, and just just the level of detail and all of that stuff is Yeah, it's just it's it's that stuff that I think is really important from a gameplay perspective as well. I Mean, you have all these skyhooks that you're moving very
quickly on. You need that ability to see all the way out, you know, as far to the horizon as you as you can, you know, as far as as they can they can allow with you know, while still keeping the frame right. Yeah. And also you know, like the the you know, the no loads during all of this stuff when he's flying around, like covering a lot of ground in a big world with a lot of details. So I guess it's you know, it's it's yeah, it's a lot of ground, but it's all vertical ground. You know, you're
kind of in the town square the whole time. You're just going up and dealing with this. Yeah this uh zeppelin, that's still ground. I mean it is, but there's as much surrender it is, but it's as much surrender whin it's like the only thing up in the sky with you is the skyhook tracks and also the zeppelin. Like that's that's really it. It's like there's not as much geometry to deal with that there the one what was the
real quick just the last thing on that what was the way? He used a really interesting word to describe what Columbia was when he was giving them like the initial backstory, like because I mean the idea was that it's been this you know, it's this floating city. But it's like because it was meant to be a symbol for you know, it was like a world's fair sight. It was meant to be found the American ideal. It says what he is when when I was sitting there was a way he described it as like
what it had become. It was like it's a boogeyman. Yeah, the booge It was like a flying boogeyman that just sort of goes around and sort of like imposes this will on the rest of the world. You know. The whole thing is set off by Colombia basically going over to China and you know, killing a bunch of civilians and then disappearing. Yeah, you know, which I guess at that point the US disavows on it just says like
we that's not us man. Yeah, And I I think that is one of the most bizarre and fascinating backstories for like any game I have ever heard before. Like I I that that is the part I'm arguably most interested in. It's just like deep diving into like what the fuck is any of this game, like this backstory about, because it just looks amazing, Like, yeah, like what is the what is the world on the Like all of BioShock, you you you constantly wonder like what is the world on the ground,
Like if this is like going on under here? This is what the fantastical is, either you know, in the sky in infinite or you know, underwater in the original of Like okay, you have some basis at least esthetically and conceptually in in you know, in history and in reality, but you know, you've a split occurred at some point and it's hard to tell how far in the past that was. And I want to explore that schism like as much as humanly possible. Like the more the more they throw into
that stuff, like the happier I will be most certain way. That's fascinating. And it definitely an amazing demou marcuts. So it sound like that was your your highlight of the day without a death, that was the kind of the day. And then over the last couple he has been Arkham City, Big Batlane fan Boy. I thought that was just phenomenal, the fact that
they've made the game prettier yet filthier and increased the size of it. And then there was another game on the Warner Brother's booth really kind of like blindsided me and took me back to almost like Shining Force and Secret of Gaia on the on the NS back in the day, and that was Bastion. And it was also a really surreal moment for me because obviously you know who the creative director is and yeah, six years ago I was pitching him on games
and yesterday he was pitching me on his game. It was total role reversal this industry, Like, how fucking weird is it? Well? The thing, I mean, your start off as journalists, you go into pr and then you you either move into marketing or creative design or you go back to being a journalist when you get to a certain age, and then it's just everybody gets younger or and people start pitching you on stuff, and it's really
kind of creepy. I was. I was at the judges event showing I fortuport manning the sled that you guys were talking about earlier, and Gregg was right behind me at at Bashton and it's just that's my old boss right behind me, got his game. I've got my sled. I guess at some point your photographer was taking pictures of me playing forts and fourth that real and
it ended up in a promo unit on the dash somewhere nice. So people I've been getting like messages like the back of your heads on the dash and I'm like, it's a little weird that you can recognize the back of my head. So is this Brian, Is this your first full on E three with Turn ten? Yes? Yeah, so how has this experience been for you? Man? It's uh, I have to say, I told people,
has ever run into to him today? It's you have this feeling of you're so immersed in your game that, at least for me, I've been not completely but mostly disconnected from the rest of the industry. So when I come to E three for twenty eleven, it's like when I came to E three for the first time in Atlanta and I had no idea what the industry was about, and everything was new, and it's like so many things that I had never even heard of, or at least that hurt a title,
but didn't know what the game is all about. So it's like really coming back and seeing things with new eyes because there's so much new stuff. I'm like, what is Payday? What is all this other stuff that i've What is BioShock? You know? I hear good things on Twitter, but I haven't seen it. So it's it's kind of refreshing in that sense to Company three and see, you know how it is when you're in the industry, you know everything that's going to happen at E three before before we even get
here. So it was it was you know, it's it's the typical sort of like once the press conferences are over, it's it's the like, all right, well E three is almost over, and even and even before that, it's more like a you know, dotting eyes and crossing t's stuff. It's like exactly well stuff, but we need to hear them say it right and and then say the name of this thing or say the price of this
thing. Yeah, you know. Of course, the flip side of that is that I've been, you know, spending most of my time at the booth. I haven't had a lot of time to go out and explore. So today I finished up and I just started running around and seen as much as I could, which admittedly wasn't a lot, but it was still like I felt like, you know, kid the candy store, just running around seeing that looks school at school, any highlights for you, well, you
guys know me. The first place I went was THEA and I was checking out the NCAA football That's the only game I wanted to play beyond you know what we were showing. And and I went to go see the UFC three demo, which looks really cool. Yeah, they're adding pride into that like face stomp, Yeah exactly, soccer kicks, Yeah, soccer kicks. And that they're redoing the submission system. Well no more of this, you know.
So I'm not sure how little weird the thing. I don't have a problem with them changing the submission system, but because this I didn't necessarily like the spinning of the hand thing. But my problem with it was that the graphic that they put over the screen completely conceals the fighters, so you don't really get that sense of two, you know, them struggling in this submission
because there's this overlay of the of the mini game. So I want to see the looks of pain on the two sweaty, half naked men hugging each other. Yeah, I actually see that facial expression. Yeah, I want to personally, I want to smell it. Yeah, but we probably got the smell because the generation. Yeah, we'll get there, we'll get there. Vision finally, Actually true story. I had a guy come up to me yesterday at the Forts of Booth and pitched me on a smell machine and
then you saw some smell machines g DC this year. Really is that coming back again? Because I remember, you know, let's say eight years ago, when they were trying to creepy gray boxes. Yes, and he's like, we could do a game, we could do a cartridge for burning rubber, whatever you want. I'm like, why why would anyone want? I know, I car lot, we do, like you can we do that?
I mean, the holy grail for that stuff was always like, you have to figure out some way to just combine things so you don't have to do a custom cartridge, right right, But it sounds like they're still And he told me a good decade away from cracking that one. Well, he's like he had the full business plan together. He's like, we're usb power now, but we're gonna come out with a wireless one soon. And they
were prototyping one you can wear on your vest or something like that. I'm like, so the next time I don't I don't wear vests, well is going to be You're gonna have to start wearing vests. In the future everyone wears vests. And you got it. So the next time one of those guys comes at Year and you want to scan them off, looks I'm dead in the eye, dead serious, and say, can you replicate the smell of dead hooker in my trunk? Just nice and serious. Just give him
that little glint in your eye and little smiles. That's what drives me. Fabricate some sweat on your upper lip. It's like, let's do it so so a little nub, a little UFC. Yeah, and that's about it, honestly. Well, I went over to the Nintendo booth just to see the EU because I'd seen so much about it, and I saw the Shield game in Actually I didn't obviously, no way was I gonna get to play it because the line was ridiculous. But I ran through there, ran past
the Vita things just to see what it looked like. And uh, and that was pretty much my So what was the you know, other than you know, it's I guess at a certain point it's kind of hard to parse out the the method in which you guys are are presenting forts before but from from the game itself. But what was what's the reaction been? Like, how are you guys feeling right now? We feel fantastic. I mean,
it's amazing. We we showed a lot of different ways of playing for at the booth, at the judges event, at the party we had last night. We you know, we had the controller set up. We had the full sled that we've already talked about with hydraulics. We have our Connect head tracking thing, and we have the Connect pods. So all of these different ways sort of add up to kind of how we think about where car racing
games need to go. You know, if you played the Forts the series before, you know that we're all about realistic raising, We're all about hundreds of cars, and of course we were going to continue to do that because that's what that's what our core audience wants, and that's what that's what the studio loves in essence, but we also want to bring in new people and say, hey, cars are cool. You know, we want we want to show people. We want to basically turn game fans into car fans and
vice versas. So we have you know, things like the Auto Vista where you can see these cars and walk around them and listen to Jeremy Clarkson talk about them, and that's where there's some connect integration there. There's connect integration there. Yeah, you probably you know we showed that last year at at
E three, but it's really come a long way graphically and otherwise. We just want to give people a sense of these cars that you may never see in real life or maybe never get to, you know, in person, but experience them, learn about them. We're trying to teach people about cars, just really share our passion for cars. We love them, and just out of curiosity, when can I start wrecking them through buildings? When can
I do takedowns and furs? I was just thinking of sitting here, thinking like, how how odd it was like your brand Eckward se we talking about turn ten and then realizing that you are literally wearing forts of socks right now? These are these are actually not these? These are kind of like these are like hanging ten socks? Are they? I wish they were? From from this From this angle, it kind of looks like if only there was such a thing as forts, I think that's something that the community would enjoy
it. I'd be wearing them on my hands for their avatar. So how's how's your driving personally? Because so so you know, like like I imagine kind of the culture of that studio, Uh, you know, you'd be surprised. We've got some guys that are unbelievable. Yeah, but we've also got folks who you know, are just into cars. We got folks. It's it's it's not it's a studio that loves cars, but it's not a studio of like forts of you know, obsessives who play it all the time.
And it's all different skill levels. We've you know, we all love the game. We all I don't know what I mean, like actually in real life and real because because that's that's kind of where I I assume like there has to be at some level of real world passion that's driving at least you know, a percentage of people there when I first when you first start at turn ten. We have our meetings every three weeks where the whole team meets and if you're new, you have to introduce yourself and they ask you
what you drive. When I when I moved up to Seattle, I didn't have a car, so I was like, I drive the bus, I drive my walk to work, you know, because my wife had the car. She was still in the Bay Area. So yeah, I mean I still suck. Yeah. I saw I saw the stuff that you were posting about going and doing some rally racing stuff, doing a little drifting and stuff. How was that was that experience? That was cool? Is this rally school up in snow Qualmy, Washington, which is not far from Redmond,
where the main Microsoft campus is. It's called dirt Fish. They invited us up there. We got to drive rally cars. And driving a rally car is fun, but it's nowhere near as fun as riding in the car with a guy who knows what he's doing, because those guys are insane and they will scare the crowd out of you, and they love at the map the whole time and go left turns sixty. Yea, I feel like Nicky Griss,
but no, it's there. It was. It was awesome. It's not like going up like in a fight, like a fighter jet with an experienced pile Like they're just like trying to make you puke the whole time. Yeah, and they're totally casual about it. Yeah, like, yeah, we're gonna go through the woods here and it's gonna get a little tight. Don't worry about it. I mean, while like the you know, the
bushes are like scraping the car. You're scraping the car and they're doing drifts at at eighty miles an hour and in a road that's probably six feet wide. I gotta ask obviously being a Britain you said the magic words Jeremy Clarkson, right, who is just an absolute god. I mean the top gear, you know, involving the British top Gear and when you've got this the American versions, no we don't thank you, No we don't. So you
know, I look, I'm with you. I mean, having watched the American version, it's like, God bless them for trying to put it in. But I mean, what's you know, how was it working with those guys? I mean, do you do much work with regards to you know, liaising with them or it were pre recorded and came over. The whole thing with top Gear for us has been a real collaborative, a creative collaboration. I mean, just speaking of Jeremy in particular, he's got voice over
in the Auto Vista feature. He's basically giving you information about these cars. But it's totally Jeremy's editorial spin and everything. So if he doesn't like one of the cars and Auto Vista, he's gonna say it, and he does say and he's he's very you know, it's it's Clarkson being Clarkson. We we you know, he wrote his scripts. We said, these are the cars we'd like to do and and we're like, do your thing. So
he he's absolutely Jeremy and that's what we love about it. And any top Gear challenges there will be uh, well, you know we have the test track. We've got the top Gear test track and the Stag. Yeah, celebrity, we witnesses to do the test track. Yes, at the party all the way in from the UK. You had this Stig last night. Helmet. Yeah, that was him and he does not speak and that's no joke. It's like they were trying to interview him and he would not because
he wants something to drink or something. He's not He's on the back and sip some real quick. Yeah, no he was. He was stone cold. Yeah, he's stone cold man. He's all about driving. Wait stone cold. Steve Boston's a stick said that. Some say he drinks his own sweat. You you got it. Well, it's that's exciting stuff. It sounds like things are going well for you Turn ten. I can say the game looks great. Thanks you. It's just you know, FORSTA was the
series that that actually enabled me to play simulation style racing game. You know, the just the adapted driving line and that that sort of stuff. Yeah, it's been and you know, it also gives me some exciting stuff to do outside of the car. It's like all the community stuff with the decaluse vinyls and all that stuff has just been so much fun. I remember trying to buy my Pringles car. Yes, all that so so do you actually have to go through? And who do you have like a team that goes
through. It's he's like this is inappropriate? Oh yes, or that's not, that's not you? Whorre do you help out with that a little? I'm all, yeah, all up in the craziest thing you've seen on a car. I have seen things. I know you guys don't allow you're cool with cursing here and everything. I can't say what the stuff that I've seen, even fear I can't say it so are Let's just say they get creative. They like At first, I was like, you know, this is
kind of funny. Some of the things I'm seeing. They're they're bad, they're but they're humorous. It's not funny anymore. There's no it's two stick figures doing it. It's like, get some please innovate on the same way that we innovate on driving games. Want you guys to be your best. Yeah, you guys not to like interview you by the game. But has the vinyl system changed in this game? You started talking about that stuff. Yet the vinyl system is gonna be is gonna be pretty much the same.
It works, People love it, people know how to work it, and they do amazing things with it. What one thing we are doing is that everything you created in three you bring right over to four, so you don't you're starting from a great spot if you spend a lot of time with it. That That was one of the things that I didn't like about the transition between from two to three is like I spent a lot of time in two painting stuff, and you felt like, well, I spent all this time
and I'm not really getting for anything for it. With three and four, we recognize that people spends hours and hours and spending painting Bruce Lee on their car. Bring it over, you'll have a head start in the storefront. When you get there, you'll make some money. So yeah, any fan service, any connects support plans for that whole thing. Any people taking pictures of you know, their own art or images and whatever. Yeah, nothing like that. I mean, we feel we feel well that. Plus we
feel like Deliverer editor works. People know how to work it, and it's it's not it's not alien to anyone anymore. So we didn't feel the need to to change change the basics of it accessible to anyone. But some of the stuff I see, it's ridiculous, you know, just and you can go through and look at the lay and kind of see how they did it.
But I don't know that I could ever do that. I know we've We've got two guys on my team who that's kind of how they got their start was through painting, and we hired them and they do like the crazy Halo car, and they do like whenever whenever Microsoft released the game, we'll do a car for it, like Limbo. We did a Limbo car, Halo Reach car, all black Limbo car. It's a shadow. I can
pay the Lombo car, ye think, yeah, so so. But they just whipped those out and it's like they've got a graphic design background, so they have some formal training, but there's plenty of people out there who don't have any And like I did, I did the I did the Scottish flag. Nice. Yeah, thanks, I appreciate. I did the Swiss flag. I did a Space Invader. Yes, I remember the Space Invader pretty well. I seem to remember. I made some money. It was nice.
They split a number three on one of my cars, a background with an X on it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think I did that. He's not bragging, he's just saying that. I'm telling you, Alice, confession. You get in there. But see the thing is, I created all my flags and forts of three, but I got the got in early on the storefront. I created like fifty flags like Germany. It's
like it's like yellow, red and brown or whatever. And that's like I made so much money off of those those flags because I was the first to market. Ye didn't make a Welsh flag. I will flag is cool? We have a fucking red dragon on too much to a picture of the goldie looking chain. Yeah, I need I need basic geometrical shapes and then I'm good. But it's really good. With with that Kanye West song. Great, what is it? Sir? Song being the game? Yes or no?
To be determined, Sorry guys, Yeah, but Jeremy Clarkson will be singing it. I would pay. I'll listen to that. I'll give that a space. Would buy a limited edition if it came with that, why not? Chris Tilton? Yes, anything you want to talk about from the day's events, Yes, that you saw before. Before I move on to the things I saw today, I would like to just briefly mentioned for assistance
where I did play it. We've been mentioning it. Yeah. The one thing I had always I've been playing the Grand Turismo game since the first one, and the one thing that I always loved about the Grand Turismo games is there was a clear passion and emotion that's shown through those games, like we're gonna position the sun here because it's gonna create an awesome lighting effect on like the Seattle course, it's gonna look great, and and it was kind of
a thing I was missing from Forts to one and two, but when fourts to three game, they really started to get it. And Forts of four I think they've really nailed it. There's like a clear passion and emotion that there was. I'm sure there was always passionate emotion in development. Yeah, it's beyond the karmas. It's on the course, it's on the lighting, it's on the driving and it's and I'm sure there was always passionate emotions that
went into the game. It's really shining through to the player now. And I think Forts of four, I think is I won't I don't want to say definitively, but it could definitively be like it surpasses Grand Turismo in all aspects. I mean, they've been making a good like grant Rismo is a good simulator when you're on the course. All the other things around it are really dated and Forts has kind of really made a game out of it. Yeah, absolutely, but in any come on in welcome. But I saw
Skyrim today and that was awesome. Yeah who did? Who else saw sky I saw it a couple weeks before the show, but I think, okay, so yeah, I'm sure it was about thirty minutes. It's really long, yep, fighting dragons, Yeah it was. It was kind of alliances
just to make people homeless. I'll start out with. The most disappointing thing is and I kind of saw it coming just because I kind of saw it you footage earlier, was that the melee combat is still just you hitting a button and your swords swinging, and like if you're near the dude, it hits them and energy gets taken away. Yeah, it's kind of yeah, but the magic seems a lot more in depth and a lot cooler, and it's being able to put the same spell in both hands to do better.
It's like you got just like that gas. Yeah. So but the interface, the interface like may having a favorite's menu and being able to choose your favorite spells and items and things and being able to quick make that a little quick thing, and the menus are really slick. Interface so much better. And finally, the biggest thing that I am so happy about is that when I'm gonna stop talking to someone, you just walk away from the person.
God And and also it doesn't zoom in and do the creepy I'm staring in your face that. Yeah, it kind of weird, but it is a little but at least they're kind of stopped, and they kind of they kind of stopped, but if they've peered a little more chill while they're talking to you, and uh, the while you're talking to them, you can look
around and the things you have to say come up. On a real night, I subtle clean menu off to the side a little bit and and even if you want to just immediately stop talking, you just walk away from him and that's cool, or you can hit a button to cancel out whatever. You don't actually have to go find the thing, getting back to menu, get to this. I want to stop talking to you now, right, And so that's a lot better, And it's probably gonna be much more enjoyable
to walk through towns and talk to people. It's gonna be a lot more fluid. I mean, I'm just guessing he only kind of went and talked to one person, right, But it that's one of the main things I love. I love finding the new town and seeing what everyone has to say about this world and things like that. And that's gonna be a lot more fluid. It isn't really curious that I have a have a friend of mine
U sysequent Terry or sit over at Area five. The way he plays all of oblivions or all of it. But as the games is, he is an asshole. Yeah. He he just puts all of his points into melee. He goes around with a big club, he takes off all of his clothes in the game, and then he just kills everyone in every town he encounters. Destroys all quest lines and just decimates everybody throughout the entire land. He did it from Fallout three, did an Oblivion, he didn't New Vegas
and like, you're missing a lot of the game. He's like, yeah, but he's gonna have our children. I just I just club whole towns and I just everything. He just immediately goes into town kills the first person. It's just like Quest failed, Quest failed. Well, I really going to see that in this game because because they have a pretty like what they had Radiant AI. They have Radiant story quests and basically they can reroute quests
through people. You can kill every get them, well everyone the world, killer everyone forever. Radiant kind of like a kind of a rough childhood Is that is that? The thing? Is this like like like enough? Yeah, uh, Chris, anything anything else? It sounds like it was a big highlight. Yeah, well we touched you. We touched on Pray two. I saw Pray too. That was that was that was really cool? Yeah, Patrick said enough about that. And also at the digs at das
X, which are unfortunate. It does play like a stiff old game with poor lighting. It was also a poor Demoo show because you have to sit through dialogue and dialogue and cut scenes for like five minutes. You can't hear anything because it's and uh so that was of all the hope and the positive buzz that has been going around the game for the past year. It was really disappointing to finally play the game and be like it does. It does to those kinds of games, credit it. Those are not games that you
should be playing at a kiosk on a show for Yeah. Also, I love the first DASX, I even like the second one. Wow, So I am still sure to play it. I'm looking forward to playing. I'm hoping it was just a really bad demo. It's gonna be problems, there's anything, even the Bill that I've played, you know, I feel like three or four hours, like some of those games don't really present themselves, you know, till much later. So I'm hopeful I'm going to play that
game, regardless of yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna play it. Just want to temper people's hopes for it, because it's not gonna be like the day Sex two. We all hope I've been I've been getting a weird alpha protocol. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't think. I don't think it's gonna be as broken. Yeah, I don't. I don't think it's gonna be as broken as gameplay wise as Alpha Protocol was. Yeah, I hope.
I couldn't get I couldn't get past like the second mission in that game in Alpha Protocol because it was But anyway, well, I know that he used to work there. You can you can bug about that if you want to, like some fixes on that. Oh did he work on He also likes Believe. He worked on Belief. He also likes puppies. Yeah, but also you know that about it. I didn't know that he worked on Alpha Protocol. Yeah, he worked ont Apa. Was that by Obsidian?
Did want at Obsidian? He worked at Obsidian. He used to work at Obsidian on Alpha Protocol. Good to know that the same time broke fall Out in Vegas? Uh yeah, well that was that was even it was already broken by the time that was a byro or whatever that crap. Yeah, yeah, you gotta see you gotta see a sorry, but you see a pattern. It comes to Obsidian. They great, they write great stories on break engines. Yeah, I think I think that's a pretty fair assessment.
Uh, for me, like Faught New Vegas is a definitely a flawed game, but damn if there isn't some amazing writing in it, and and there is definitely times of all of yes, man is is awesome. There are and there's stuff like that that can carry a lot of that experience. So yeah, But so I also saw the Uncharted three theater demo that was God damn, that game looks awesome, and they are further blurring the lines between
what like, God, it doesn't even look like anyme was playing. It looks like just like it just it sounds to sound like that PlayStation ad where it's like Magufriend thinks you fortunate movie, but I'm just playing on Charted two.
It's like, god damn. On Charted three, looks like I'm watching that combat sequence like when they're on the on the cart I kept looking at the guy with the controller like yeah, I'm just looking back to I was like, what is he doing, because like there's a whole fight sequence that's like we're talking about this last night, but there's a whole fight two gets in there that's like super cinematic looking, right, and you keep waiting for
the triangle button to pop up to do the punch combo or whatever, but no button prompts ever appear. So you're hitting buttons and you're doing stuff, but it's like there's a rhythm to the combat that is clearly being controlled by the player, but you're not seeing it that way. It's like the way the camera's moving and the way everything is presented, it looks like a damn
movie and it looks awesome. And they have they've done a lot. It was clearly they've done a lot more things about in the middle of gameplay, they'll just in search just a quick camera change, this little cinematic thing. It doesn't take It doesn't at least it doesn't seem like it's gonna take gameplay away from you long enough to realize gameplay has just been taken away from you. It's like you've just been showing something really cinematic and it's cool and just
kind of before you even realize you're already control of the guy again. So it hey, you feel like cowboy. It looks awesome, you know again. I as I grilled them the other day about how all the boat physics worked with led to him geeking out about all how the boat is rock. I had to ask him how the plane takes off because the you're you're on the plane and it takes off and the jeeps getting small, there's this world everywhere. I'm like, God, damn, how is this? How is
this? How is this plane happening? Because I remember working, Uh, how is this plane happening? How is this plane happening? Yeah, I remember working on when I was working for Michael on The Incredibles, there was the fact j Walker gets a job as a fight the plane. I remember for Pixar the plane moving at high speeds across massive amounts of land, and geometry was a big deal in rendering it, and so I and to see that in games in real time now, I mean the Incredibles was was two
thousand and four. That was just you know, six seven years ago. Yeah, And to see games doing this stuff, that stuff that computers would have to render, you know, hours and hours to render one frame. Things that the game systems are doing now, it's kind of crazy. Agreed, Agreed. I cannot I cannot stress enough how much I cannot wait for that game. Yeah. Uh, gents, I think it's it's time for us to take a break here we've we've a lot of people. We recruited
a house full of people here. Do you know any of any of them? I'm gonna say about sixty percent. Okay, I know who they are. And there's at least a few roustabouts and bag of bonds that have just kind of wandered in here. But probably we got we gotta. We got a genuine trans far in the house. That's right. I'm going to make him sit down here and talk to me about transferring in a little bit, please do. Marcus, thank you so much for for coming and up on
the catching meal. And I say it's it's it's an honent to come and hang out with you guys. I mean, podcast is pre recorded and edit. They just put time and content so to actually actually be able to sit and just talk shit. And I actually didn't talk a lot of ship, which is all. And you're asking beforehand, You're like, man, I'm gonna go off on this, this and that. But it was imagine. I decided it was straight myself because I'm actually in quite intelligent company. I'm
not I'm saying that I'm not normally. I'm just gonna shut the up. Thank you, Thank you. That is disappointed that you didn't go off just say something offensive, right now, go, yeah, go, Bobby Coote's a count all right, we got it, brilliant Tagg and Baggett, Chris, thank you for for coming. Thank you for the awesome homemade Generaliah and and everything else. And happy birthday Silton. Uh and Brian Eckberg. You've turned into a microphone. Uh four, thank you. That's that's unfortunate.
I'm sure it's gonna have some impact in your ability to community manage four turn ten, but hopefully not too drastically. All Right, we're gonna take a break here. If you're watching the live stream of job or something fair enough, we're gonna take a quick breaking. We're gonna reset the couches and we're gonna get some more guests in here, so stay tuned for a little bit and uh and we go night. All right, folks, we're back.
I think this is gonna be our our final stand here at E three, twenty eleven, last segment of our our live show slash podcast here from the house. And uh, I say, pretty pretty all star cast here on the couches. Now, we're gonna let's take it around the room. Here. Christian nuts Hi, there we Go has both the visual and audio head is not the best for I don't know. I don't know, but both is good though. Both is good. Absolutely. I didn't know if I
was a lot to speak yet. Peter Barflow is here as well, Peter say hi, Hey, uh tell folks, where are you from? What you're doing? I'm working over Verge Labs on skull Girls and this is my first podcast ever. I'm popping my podcast charity. Is it a little frightening? You're popping your pumps too? Don't. We're here for you. You're You're in safe company here, Peters, so so don't worry about it. I was here last year and the Alexander was here and didn't look safe.
Andrew Andrew Fisher is here as well. And you doing I'm doing well. I'm doing very well. How is your free wheeling? E three? Ben freedom unemployed? I mean you just get to go home and just play games for fuzzies pretty much. That sounds pretty good. David Ells from three four three Industries, in case you didn't know from his shirts, In case there was any question, So do you have four of those? Or is that the same shirt I have? Four of them. Unfortunately, this one made
a trip to Roscoe was chicking the waffles earlier. No, that was a very fort that was a very fortunate trip. This is dessert for the later. It's like in ThunderCats when you see their closet and it's all the exact same and you know the thing. It's like you really you have no idea. Nothing wrong with free shirts, David, No, I mean you need on although they're only extra large. Well, you only have extra large left at the at the Halo. Yeah, we had a single X, double
X, and a few triple x left. All the mediums and smalls and larges were gone. Shane Bettenhausen is here. I'm happy to finally be on the bobcast because I was on the couch. We had you on the couch, we had you in the studio. He came to the office. He didn't perform. Everybody's first ever been on the virginal couches. David is no, David David is the one. He's he's a tripting our couches. But actually, I don't think these couches could be anymore. Gives me five minutes.
Yeah, you see film students, not the cleanest group. For sure, your Freedom Tour then involve you singing Freedom ninety at any point during eithere, bra I just mentioned the possibility of karaoke, so it might happen a fitting end. It is one of my standards. Can we get a couple of bars? Can you let you they notice some mistakes? We're bill to last. That's what you get. That's what chicken. It's too it's too bad. We're not gonna be able to bring these cameras to this karaoke session
because it's obviously gonna be something special. Mark McDonald is also here, all the way from the Land of the Rising Sun. Came for this big, big fan of the of the bombast Transmortal Combat, which is like the last ten minutes of every episode we're talking transfer. Mark is transferring himself. Well, let's you know what, I haven't heard that. That's really funny.
That's the first time you're the first person that's to be so happy when Christian nuts side talking engage gift, big big thanks to Chris cole Or for for wasting an hour photoshopping that together. The better we all are, Mark, I just want to say that to get this out of the way that your your couch is in good hands. We have the coach. It was also a Skip's couch. It was also Patrick's couch. It is now it is now you know contract, the unwritten, unspoken contract spoken? Which is?
But which is this couch? Which is the greatest couch and planet Earth? I'm coming back for it, So you don't. You do not own the couch. You are the quarters for I'm the keeper of the couch. I will say this, Mark, You're free to come and get it from the burbs anytime you want. For the record, I love this couch so much. I spent like six months tracking down the exact mottom I'm and I bought the same exact couch from Mason's. No it did fit. Yeah, that's
Patrick Clepick who it didn't fit with. He is the one who foresaid forsuk the couch. I thought the couch chose its own owner. That wasn't Mark's couch original but ronology is brandon'sar to Mark to me to Patrick Kleppick and now Ryan and and and it did kind of choose me because you know, Patrick, moving from from La to San Francisco didn't have room in his apartment for it anymore, and it was trying to give it away and couldn't find anyone
else who had rooms. I have a proper house, and actually and it was it was perfect because my couch was a piece of shit. I hated my couch. It's just like the heart of the sun is the hatred I had for the catch. Sixty hours of E three coverage, we might have hit the bottom of the barrel couch. And I will say lasting about the couch. When I heard that you're giving the couch the only one world couch story, that's one. I was considering moving back to San Francisco, and
I was considering becoming your roommate, just to be with. It's a great God, damn that you still you still John McCarty's old John mcarti stleff on his own couch from like twelve years ago, and he was shocked the electrical tape still exists. John mcarti's old car. Can I drive him to your couch? In the more things changed, we never talked about this three that you guys haven't talked about in the like seven hours. Yeah, bodcast coverage
for us. Besides well, it's couches, though, TSI were games that you guys haven't touched on. We might mark you know what you I feel like you're just setting me up so perfect, like you're teeing it up. Yeah, I love it. God bless you. We talked about it before. Yes, we haven't talked We haven't talked about transferring quite enough. You know that wasn't the first thing you talked about. Well, well, actually it was when Mega sixty four was here. We didn't we we dove deep
on on their involvement in the process. Uh, And you know, they said that they had a lot of fun doing that, they felt very honored that that Kajima would would consider them to, you know, be part of this process, that that he would even reach out to them, and that they you know that that Kajima kind of gave them carte blanche to do what
they wanted to. And you know, when they sent off the video, they said, like, you know, we were stressing and we thought there was gonna be all these cuts and requests, and they came back like, no, perfect, that's great, And so you know, they they they enjoyed that process regardless of let's let's say kind of the bigger picture of what that announcement was so so Mark. You know, I'm not I'm not looking
for for juicy scoops he or anything. I'm not looking for you to throw anyone under the bus, But I would just love to know how you got involved in that process and and being part of kind of I mean kind of an anti announcement in a way of like a significant chunk of the Canami press conference of Kajima basically saying well, you know, discussing product for sure, talking about the middle gear and the Zentner, the enders uh compilations, but
but also kind of just like showing up to say we we were not going to talk about kind of the big things that we have. So so I'm just curious, like what how did you first get involved in this? Like how did you get Two years ago pre production started and there was some story there was some rough storyboards. I sent them my notes, We went back and forth. There was like some models made audition process. Yeah, how
do you take to do the motion capture? Yeah, I mean basically the first part of this MAGA sixty four what you mentioned is true, which is like you know, if Kojima asked you to do it, we just I did it. We did it at eight four and happy to like we work with those guys sometimes and uh we like them, and uh yeah, I mean it's Kojima, right, it's it's it's it's Kojima production. So they tell you to jump and basically say, I don't. I don't know that
anyone would would say jump. I say, jumping is really just to propel yourself upwards about having like total freedom and whatever. That not quite my thing. They had an idea of what they wanted to do, and like I had some ideas on it too, and but yeah, it was really hundreds of feet below the ground. Yeah. Actually, so a lot of different things about that video. I mean, obviously they were having fun with it. But you can see the reflection of the windows in these as he's saying,
like I'm saying, like, where are there's no windows here? They knew that and they realized that They're like, no, no, that'll be funny. People will notice that on the internet. So I have one question. How many takes to do the walking talking escalator shot? Not as many as you would think. And I was very class I will say I am not a walk and talk host guy. So that's the thing. They called
me like a week before. The whole thing kind of came together at the last minute, and I was just like, okay, sure, And they sent me the script like nine or ten o'clock the night before, and I looked at it, and I mean, changed a bunch of stuff, but it was like it's going to be this. A lot of stuff changed that was happening that script three hundred and sixty four pages. No one, I will say, like Jeff Keiley, Victor Lucas h Adam Sessor, what those
guys do is a lot fucking hard earth than it looks. I will definitely say that now to kind of pull that off or whatever, like it's not as easy it looks. But anyway, but for the record, coachman,
they can call any of those gentlemen they called Mark McDonald. So I'm curious, like, did you have any sense of of why they felt comfortable reaching out to you specifically, like like like and and did did they give you an idea of like, hey, you know, we want you to do this thing and here's here's why specifically or not really No, I mean they it was just kind of like they knew you, and it's like we need an American dude to help do this process. And I think that was it.
I think that was it, like well known and you know a lot of gamers knew how Marcus from a stint and EGM which was the only NOPM and soft which is like very long and you used to do them production support with, right. I think that was maybe part of it. And and we've done some work with those guys before. And honestly, I don't know, and they never said this because it's probably too nice, but I'm guessing like Victor Lucas was probably too busy to like fly over at the last minute,
because he probably would have done an awesome job. And they're friends with him too, and whatever else. Guys they teach you already hired hard gay, so that's right, he was so so so it sounds like it kind of came together a very last minute. It was a very yeah, it was a it was a you know, they had an idea of of what they wanted and they had I mean, they had like you know, they had a bunch of cameras and they had they threw together a lot of stuff.
They had those little cards made up, which people think is weird, you know, coach MC kept pulling out these way I'm glad you would pay h they went out in America went on Japan. Some people have seen the Japanese version. I was hoping that they would put out the Japanese version and subtitle it for everybody because you wouldn't have to Yeah did you hear me? Yeah? Actually, so there is a Japanese version of that. So I talk again talking to the Mega six four guys that they had said, yeah,
there's they you know, dubbed all their stuff in Japanese. And they were like, we don't know what they if they change shit, we don't know if like if if if things were completely different, because there are parts of unfortunately Transfarring Tring universe. Just for the record, it was the same
in Japanese. Oh was it? Because because so they were saying, there was a specific moment where where like, you know, Rocco is kind of walking along, he's you know, playing the janitor or whatever, and uh, he had no lines in the English version, but in the Japanese version he's like muttering to himself and Okay, maybe it's not identical, but I mean it's not like, you know, a wildness reposation, but they were saying like like like you know, famous voice actors were dubbing over there them
and it was like blowing their minds, and people were freaking out about like, you know, two of them were voiced by someone who was a major voice actor in the Naruto and and there's a you know, a couple of notable you know, metal gear voice actors that were Yeah, like the guy
plays plays Rocco, which is like the guy who plays Solid Snake. So oh was that the Oh wow, apparently like really famous all of the Japanese voice actor Do you have any do you have any idea who who provided your somebody somebody told me maybe it isn't like the Power Range equivalent to Power Rangers
or something like that. But yeah, I was told that forgot the White Power Rangers really bad, the White Power yea, that's wait for wait for it to catch here's white So did you have any sense like when you're in the middle of this, like this is gonna be a fucking weird thing.
Yes, well, actually, and there was stuff that I I honestly I haven't seen the final cut yet because it was kind of and it's half like like awaja which if you don't know what that word is, it's like it's the opposite of Sean and Freud. It's like the pain, physical pain of watching someone be embarrassed. Like so it's half that and half just like being
crazy busy. But there was a part where we were telepathically talking to each other and the elevator that I think didn't make it into the final video. I don't remember. Yeah, so there was well you know, well you know what director's cuts coming. Oh well yeah, it was a coachim of production. So we will get the extended place pre order version. Yeah, we'll come with that movie. I'm sure, just right, Yeah, that's
right. But it was kind of like I from the start, I was like, okay, well let's just like make it clear that we're just having fun and this is a joke from from the start. So hopefully like that
sense came through with my back acting, my bacting. I don't know if that when in front of the escalator, when I first seek the convulsions, well, I like there was clearly a lot of you know, intended humor throughout, like you know, starting off with make on other and and and then you know, to get a lot of the goofy stuff in the elevator and whatnot. I thought the Makes four thing was great. I thought it
was. It was genuinely funny for sure. Yeah, But so I think the kind of the schism in that in that whole thing was like, at what point did the jokes stop? Because because like when when the Mega sixty four guys introduced transferring, You're like, people came up. You're like, Okay, that's something that those guys made up in this like because because I'm like, no, now I'm gonna explain you what transferring it's a lifestyle is going on. Yeah, A couple of people have said like they yeah,
that they thought it was a joke. They saw like the logo and then the name active lifestyle combining games and gaming on the go, right, transfarring and that stuff. Yeah, And so like I think one of the first lines after it was like, oh so that's Mega sixty four. Is this whole thing a joke? And it's like no, actually, And I think that was intended. I think they anticipated that a little bit, but maybe not as much as people. Yeah, sure, because people actually reacted to
it, right. Yeah, Well, I don't know what else to say about that it was a beautiful because it was a it was a weird, weird thing. Yeah, Konami out Konami themselves yet again. Yeah, actually, can we talk about Konami Like, so it seemed like that they really clamped down after last year because of just the colossal meme disaster that last year was right, but there being too far in the other direction. Was it a meme disaster or did it get Konami way more attention than it would ever
have gotten. No, No, that's I agree with that, but I think being a Japanese company, Konami was like, oh my god, people are making fun of us, even though like they don't see the part where it's actually that's the only way they're actually reaching people. It is people are making fun of us. Lits clamped down and do it on video to make sure nothing goes wrong. So they did. Maybe market doesn't realized like it wasn't just the Kojima part that was on video, that their whole press conference
was on video, so so people didn't know that. I knew that before it happened, but it seemed like from the internet reaction that people were they did not announce it, like because skull Girls was involved with it. I had been told that it was going to be on video. I'm like, oh my god, people are gonna hate this, but they didn't announce that. So they had viewing party. They treated like it was this, like
at this time it will start because this is the press conference. And then so you expected to be live streaming, right, you expected, and it was streaming just fast forward to but then you found out on like I think it was like the game trailer side they had it as well, and you thought they just gave them the stream. He realized no, they just gave them the file, and then people were able to actually scrub through it.
So there were people at like these these viewing parties or whatever who are sitting there and they're like looking at their phones and realizing, oh wait, all of the information from the rest of this press conference is already out there because because people have scrubbed through like this, and and it just it just seems like one of those crazy ass Japanese miscalculations, right right, or at least you know, I mean, I think I think just hit on last year's
economic press conference. I think it it people were making fun of them. I think it actually worked out great for them, because I don't think it transferred to the games too much. People were making fun of the presentations, but people didn't like People didn't take it out on the games. People didn't really think less of the games. Let's be honestly, how many of the average gamers knew who talk Fuji? Was? No everyone because of one million
troops? Yeah right, but that's I don't know from his perspective, that's better than if no one knew who he was. Yea, But yeah, they also did like this Q and a session on Tuesday night that I also had to go to, and it was like, I think people assumed that because they were having an event on a Tuesday night during E three that they
actually had some news to make, but no, they didn't. They just had prepared questions from IGN and game Spot and other people, and then the dev team answered it, and like everybody was so bored and restless, and we're playing the games and then so like, for example, people playing, we're playing our game, and like then PR came over and said, stopped playing the game. So then they started talking to us about the game.
And then PR came over and said, stopped talking about the game. And then by the end of it, everybody was bored and restless and playing all of the games except ours because is they've been told not to. But they're like like and everybody just left us, like that was terrible. Well, I feel like there's like Konami beyond last year's press, beyond this year, like there is a long and storied history of like of just of there never
had a good three years Rock Revolution have one. That one the videos up on YouTube watch the Rock Revolution live performance two thousand eights, but but they don't even Yeah, it's a real bad. It's a real bad led by the producer of the game playing along to the song and they fail halfway through
and she says she maybe someone else should have played it. I feel like I feel like there's this you know this, it's it comes from being a Japanese company where they feel this need to like we need to give absolutely everyone do we need to have like equal time for everyone, which is why we got the Ugo and the Frogger, which it was just like you know minute, yeah, there will be like, Okay, we're announcing some some like
we' announcing three new Dance Dance Revolution products. Right, we are now going to have fifteen minutes segments for each of these three Dance Revolution products, because you know, out of respect, because you know, and I think it's I think it's a cultural thing. I assume it's it's kind of like my speculation because it happens year after year with these with these Canami events. But
it's not. I mean I was watching the uv Soft I mean like kind of tone deaf press conferences that don't take into account the audience is definitely not you know, oh no, monopolized by the Japanese, not at all ub soft press conference. I was watching it after the fact. I think they played through the entire that Rayman game, like from start to finish, like somebody to tell them, like, you don't need to show your games for ten minutes at par ride, would you, mister Caffeine. But I mean,
at least, I mean they were. They were when they were showing the games. At least the games looked good. It was it was all of the the rappers. It was the packaging of that press conference where it was like, like, God, just get this fucking guy off the stage. Who the hell is mister kafein the guy? I still don't understand apparent.
Apparently people if he was bitched as a marketing guy, wasn't ye like he's he's been around for years, so he worked, and he said he worked, but he doesn't realize I'm sure mister caffeine is like a French insult. He's just not in on it. Eight years or something. A few people have been telling me that apparently he would go to like the game stop like managers things and like go and get everyone, try and get very pumped about these imagined these imagine games. It was like like a warm up comic
before the real comic. Like but then they said, you know what, We're not going to put out the scratch for Joe McHale this year. So just that was my thit Joe reason I went to them, We saw the best conference. Keep doing Joel, Come on, you can't keep doing Joel mcale everything loser comedian who did activision like Jamie Ship when he did. But Hugio a moment ago reminded me of many many eight years ago. One year when I was at EGM and Kanami wanted me to interview everyone, and they're
like, please take this Hugio interview. No one else is taking it. I mean so much to us, it's so important. Everyone knows Ugo. And in the middle of my Yugio interview, the dude fell asleep, literally fell asleep. The guy you were interview asleep. He was jack your questions. Now you didn't know the answer and faked it. Even the guy who makes Hugio is bored by and the tridslators like, what do we do? There's no possible question you could ask me ask was like, let him sleep.
And then I was telling this story to a PR person who was doing the PR back then, and they said, well, one time we were doing an interview with end guy and guy fell asleep, and any guy wants fell asleep on the podcasts like mid sentence, wow, coptic or something.
Maybe Sorry, Yeah, that's funny, that's funny, I think. I mean, we've again, we've touched on this topic in previous nights this week, but at E three it's it's very easy, like you are running around all day, uh, and then it's like, all right, we're gonna put you into this air conditioned theater in this dark room in the back and it could be the most fucking interesting game in the world. Yeah, then you're like you findly like oh I get to sit down. Oh it's nice
and cool, Oh it's dark, and then you're just gone. I can speak to that. I was in the U. I loved it. Don't get me too like it really and then bring up menus and scrolling down And every time I drag it with lands like it was like you you have to start doing the like digging nails into your knees, like don't don't be that asshole, don't be the person that that in the backroo, which made it
even worse. I just let go so so I you know, I kind of give a pass to to to folks to whom that happens, and and yef if you're you know, traveling from overseas and jetlagged and happens, and then you have to answer questions about product. Give the poor guy a break, all right, Ry guys tired? Uh god, damn it is. It has been an awesome show and I'm so glad to have you guys here. Shane, how has your show been? What have you been up to?
It's been exhausting, you know, on this on that side, as anybody's to that side, I'll tell you it's not as easy and fun as you think. He's been fantastic work all weak. You were kind of down here on vacation, Yeah, but anyway you were, you're working, So it was really fun, super busy, but I'm really excited about the response
that elshan I has gotten here at E three. We really stoked. We won the Honey Badger Award today from the Example Examiner's out of it because like that is the ethos, like we don't really give a shit whatever else is doing, and like our game isn't trying to be what everyone else is trying to be. So that's awesome and the demos outs everybody can go play it. And also we finally got to announce Dragon's Crown from Vanilla Ware. And
if you haven't seen this game, I've heard about it. I haven't seen it for myself, but I'm on board for anything side scrolling four player action and RPG beat him up kind of like Guardian Heroes or for PSVTA and PS three, And you know the character designer there, George commenton he has outdone himself in rendering the female form. Let me ask you real fast. You just said for PS VITA and PS three, Yes, So how does that
work. There's transferring. Is it the exact the exact same game? Do I buy one and get a discount to the will reveal the full interoperability between the versions. We're not talking about that right now. Later this year, I've said that it is a retail game for PS three and on Vida. It'll be both retail and download, so kind of a spiritual successor to the old D and D cap Com exactly, because not many people, all the
experts like yourself would know that. George Commentani worked at Capcom when he made Dungeon Dragons, Shadow of My Star and Tower of Doom. Yeah, yeah, those are those are great games. So that was that. That was the game. At the Sony press conference that ended, then it was like, wait, what was that? That was that game because it was the text game, like hyper realistic creepy portals test right. Yeah. And I will say the font. Kotaku doesn't like our font. I love our fond.
I think the logo critiquing logos they did like they're talking about this fund like it's this huge controversy. They call it an Kotaker called it the worst font ever. Well, I was I turned to and worst font ever but which I turned. I turned to Andrew Press like I could not what was that? I could read a sad thing. Well, the w it's kind of anyway, I'll move on. But looking at the other game the games, But the other game that I was really close to my heart is Magical
Drop five, which Christian and I were talking about. My god, it was intimated to me in the past. I'm a Magical Drop three is in my like top ten games ever. It ever came out to America except on the Neo Gao platform, so it's not exactly like the Yeah, yeah, I mean it's just the best competitive puzzle game ever. Magical Drop three was and uh better than what about four? Was four just a piece of shit? They just completely lose There's no actual four, There's no it was stricken.
For the record, they went they went super realistic and they tried to go gritty. It was a person shooter. Actually that was open world Magical Drop. It just walking around level. There's these colored balls on and you just drop them anywhere. It didn't make any sense drop a single ball you will. Open world gameplay didn't really work. But no, seriously, I mean, it's arguable what the best matching like versus puzzle game is. But
my personal believes magical drop is that just attack? Yeah whatever, I think. I agree. Actually I think this is the second best penalty ball touch attack, but it's very different. It's super fast paced. Its unbelievably fast paced, energetic and fun. And the fact, like Shane intimated to me that this was in the works a while ago, but there were some difficulties and like I was so like seriously expa or something. No, actually,
it's just a matter a matter of getting the rights. Because Dad East, Dad East, the old company we all know me all these great games, they got bought out by a Japanese ce phone company. They didn't quite understand what they had with all this IP so it took a lot of doing to get it away from them. So who's making this? So it was developed by Arcado, this really great team in France and they made a bunch of the best games on Xbox like Indie Channel and yeah their games are Arcados here.
Yeah they're fantastic and they're doing a new game for Sega as well. But yeah, the great high Ris two d art. Did you just like break an India by saying that if I did I think it was announced there is no I didn't say what was Are you looking at me for video? But no, it's really cool and it's gonna be super value priced, so it's super stay out there for people. Uh, Magical Drop is if you like versus public games. Just I cannot recommend it enough something. If you
don't, it's good enough. You probably have a lot of I mean it's like, yeah, how many players is the is? The has four players? On what formats that come in to? We only announced the PC Steam version, but we'll be announcing all the consoles very soon. Okay, because it's a harder cell And did you just announce all the consoles? Oh, it's not coming to like, you know my Nuance. You're still playing Merlin card on that motherfucker. No, it's more like it was all about a
free fall thirty fifty jump out the window. I actually tried it like a nople months ago. I got a weird bug. I'm like, I'm gonna go buy a fucking Nuance. I had that bug, and I tried. I tried to find it impossible to find what really there's one of Shane's bedroom. Shane, do you remember when time when we were all like when we're working, gamers are common. We decided to go troll the NUAN forum, like Shane and I signed up. Wasn't there anyone in the NUAN. It's
like remember Bob and Shake and the Duan for us. We totally fucking business. Yeah, the release four, but it was like it was so basically it was all the tempest fans who would buy whatever platform the next game. That's felt kind of bad, but it was very It was like the bitter dregs of like a Jaguard like Jolia Jaguar for UM in ninety seven and one guy posting which I did to say that is the same crowd. So did you have this? Is this a NUAN from is this vintage? You didn't
pick this up later? I got it when it was clearancing and I got it for the VLA my Jeff Minter, which I still use. I think the many parties at your apartment where we were watching Jeff Miner's Virtual Lighters on screen, saying did you ever get a working if? Did you ever get your CD? I know, Mark McDonald, you played my CDI so much. You played Hotel Mario all night trying to beat Hotel You were there. He broke My would have beat Hotel Mario BO Tomorrow is not better than Sonic
CD is no my default, it would have to be right. I'm gonna just admit my ignorance here. I have no idea what the Hotel Mario is, but I am a huge Sonic CD fan, so tracks you prefer show me on Hotel Mario. What is this game? It's one of the old better than worth actually playing on a on a on a CDI hotive to the rest of the CDIs library or relatives games. Relative to the rest of the C standards, it's esoteric. It's it is the best Mario game set in
a hotel. I don't really know what's gone. You're right, second best Mario games. There might be a hotel and Mario is missing. I think there's there's a hotel Maria Dash. You're right. Actually, so it's just like the best, fourth, fifth best if you're looking to play a Mario game set in a hotel. And also if these if this is your Venn diagram. Yeah. The CDI controller also is uh shall we say a unique recursor. It's kind of like a we mode with like another twenty buttons on
it. Yeah, except that the fucking like deep pad on. I mean, it's like it's terrors, It's horrible. It's as bad as like a Jaguar pad control on excellently calculated. Though, Yeah, totally pauses, you're moving. I really didn't gonna be talking about Nuan and CDI to run up up three eleven at the very beginning. You know, it's really the hottest cutting edge news talked about. No, no, no, this is good stuff. You are good. No, this is the good stuff. We're
in it right now. Make no mistake. What am I gonna do talk to David Ellis about what he can't say about Halo, Like, we're not really here to talk about that. Well, David Elis was saying that the Halo four CG teaser. He was very upset that the Halo stuff leaked out that morning because it was there supposed to be like a bait and switch. You weren't supposed to tell what game it was, Like, I wonder if
it's a different Space Marine O Space Marine. But you know how the video started, it was like fucking synapses firing or but then you hear the voice and and that like even when it's really yeah, but you can hear. But if you can hear, it doesn't matter what the voice is saying. That tone like it that people it's so specific. I agree. Like I was actually kind of bummed, like knowing that it was gonna be Halo four, right, because like if that had just come out, that would have
been Because what I love about E three is the holy shit moments. I love the biggest surprises, and you just you never get them anymore. You knew that Nintendo was going to announce a new a new system, you know, and you knew almost everything about all the stuff about the controller, like a lot of that stuff had already gotten out, and and same thing with with Halo fource, Like I watched him, like okay, that's it's a pretty pretty good, pretty exciting kind there kind of was a holy shit moment
in in Nintendo's conference. They just didn't mention it when HD Zelda. But then again, but that's just I mean, that's not a game, but it's like you but if you could game, we thought that was going to be a game, I mean, and then they went back and showy, but it's it's it's why they continually said that stuff is that they knew how hard they had been burned at Space World with with you know, Shane's absolutely right. The CG demos, Yeah it's not yeah, like you know,
it's they know about audience textations was outa They're very careful. But I think the biggest surprise that the INTEND press conference was when the orchestra started playing. I was fucking flipped my lips. I will see at home. That did not play nearly as well as it clearly did. Oh my god, it was. It was like about to shoot myself, Come on it, sport expect the biggest like oh shit moments when is the ps vita the price announcement
problem. But even that made like one hundred dollars more than that because I thought they could get away with it. It's it's substantial, but even that league, like before the press conference was over, mostdprsent on a press release actually actually got it before the press conference started. If I didn't work at
the press conference. So yeah, like a lot of people, there was an audible and then the other that's USD Like the first the first thing happened is this guy just you just get this like huge belly laugh from a guy just rakes the silence and then just booze and hissing. My thing is like, does nobody they have run throughs, they have practices, somebody writes that
script. Does nobody at any point be like, hey, maybe we don't want to hit the nation's probably mine so hard before it because they especial that's what they call it. Terrible reception drop calls all the time, like, actually have better luck down here than I did. Really, yeah, really, it's fucking it's awful, not in the confesstion center. That was my favorite part of press conference was mister Penguin Hands, who talked throughout the part
of it. Who anyone anyone who watched which game when he was like the PSCN guy or I can't remember what his name was, but the entire time he was talking, his fingers never spread apart any of them in concerts. Well, I think we can all agree other other than the AT and T announcement that great job Jeremy was the big takeaway from the Sony press conference. I don't know about you guys, but we have been we have been saying to each other here in the house, just like, great job Jeremy.
But you know, even even kind of you know, the schadenfreud of moments of a press conference like that. It's it's almost like like you do you do have to feel for these like I was in the room for the for the AT and T announcement, and just you feel for Kaz because he's just standing up there by himself and he has to say it. He can't not say it. He knew it was coming like some sort of reactions and I don't think that. I don't think that, but he still had to write
it out. Regard to amused though, well, he was like he's like simple people, there's no graceful way exactly to segue because you can't just like talk immediately and you can't gone incidents and our executive part of the everybody I didn't see. I haven't seen next Box conference yet. What was the response to Star Wars Connect? I can tell you what My respartment was crowded, cheers, I mean during the press CONTI yes, it seemed a little quiet,
It seemed a little sash. It wasn't quiet when they show a Star Wars cannact. Yeah, that's true because it was the one game game that they showed while we were all wearing the like moo moos. But yeah, that game. I mean, like, whose aspirational fantasy is it to be Star Wars Kid? Like every kid ever and you're sitting at pod race or just go yeah, I mean what is the game about? Yeah, Star Wars Kid? Well you saw though I saw. I should not admit that
out loud on a podcast a little late. Basically, I mean it just looked really this is live, im precise. Yeah, and it's delay on everything a little. The fantasy of the Star Wars game is always when motion controls introduced, is the lightsaber. And when they showed the lightsaber stuff, it was the least impressive part of it because it was he was just bouncing, floating from the guy to guy. It was the best parts were like
forced pushing droids. Yeah, the best part was the best part was lightsaber on, which is which is not something you actually have to do in that game. Uh. With a nice little dramatic flare there, I mean hearing hearing talking to like the double Fine guys about like Tim Shafer's involvement and that, uh you know, I don't I don't know that there is like obviously there are repeated run throughs. They are you know, trying to nail this stuff down as well as they can. But but I don't know that the
people that are like writing and producing it necessarily have the perspective. I think, you know, you're you're working on it. It's I think it's maybe hard to see outside because you know, they were talking about yeah, and you know, Tim came up and they did run through, and he was like, yeah, we need to we need to rewrite some of the stuff. And he went back and and you know added a lot of like the kind of the fun touches that that made that specific demo kind of stand out.
It's like the simulated family unit stuff like that was that was all Tim and and like that, like coming off of the Disneyland thing, which and and to be clear, and both that Star Wars game and that Disneyland game are gonna fucking sell through the roof. They like, it doesn't matter if if we all think it was corny, because yeah, yeah, and Star Wars, I mean, they're setting it in the Clone Wars stuff for a
reason. They don't care what old man Star Wars thinks about it. They care about the kids who are actually buying Star Wars ship watchings, and which is very so let me, but let me just play Devil's Advocate. Can you not make a Star Wars game that kids, kids are gonna buy whatever shitty old game? Can you not make a Star Wars game that kids are gonna buy that? Also like old man Star Wars? Can a big big fan is gonna buy t you can win a Lightsaber sound and I the fucking
John Williams music and most people are there. You just don't make it super shitty and most people will be there. Ergo Lego Star Wars, which I will make six of them. I think, yeah, is actually kind of a shitty game, but it's just okay, and so people are like it's actually really good. Actually reminds me. Game reminds me when nintendoous the exclusive like Lego GTA for three DS and you nobody cared, Like nobody can have Lego. It's not for you. What's really called like bringing it brick City
city stories, City stories, Yeah, Libody Cities. Isn't that only trademark to rock story anyway? Whereas they smash a red Man has Brick City when when sind me like, you know, like I think she I heard that. I think you know an smash by like, yes, we will make us smash by this game at some point in the future. We have not started working on it at all, but I was reading for that part and it's like, what cool thing is they now that it's a three DS one
as well, because Smash has not come to the portable systems before. So that's cool. Yeah. I agree, it's not worth screaming at the top of your lungsin is that you're about to face. Yeah, but I think it's I think it's cool, honestly, Andrew Fister, Hi, thanks for checking in. I just wanted to make sure everything's cool with you. Freedom Tour whoo whoo. Yeah yeah, Freedom Tour is going well. So what does that? What does that mean to your to your time at the show?
Like obviously you still here see pretty much anything that was the worst thing you saw either the worst thing I saw at E three. Oh it pains me to say it. Sex don't tell me that that's a qualified not worst,
but maybe you shouldn't have. They got rid of the play it, but they got rid of the old arts style that we didn't like, right, like kind of the same as worst, kind of like if you have to say that, like I would have really loved it if it had been just a trailer, I like that kind of means it was the worst. Yeah, maybe it was just it seemed very rough and it didn't seem as smooth and as responsive as I remember SSX being. And maybe my memory is
wrong, but it just didn't seem like it was ready. When does it come out? January twenty twelve, So it's got some time and they're gonna do another big rollout at games Colm the guy I was saying, So I still have vote for it, but my first impression is I still really want to love it, but I'm not quite there. But you can drop into any mountain fugial world except for Mount Fuji only on play station exclusive mountain. Yeah, how do you have an exclusive mountain version? It's just flat terrain?
Yeah, no mountain here. You have to snow skate across twenty miles harkour run like need for speed? That is that is a bummer. But what's the what are the highlights? BioShock? Obviously it's been mentioned thousands and thousands of times. Yeah, I'm not an old school X com fan. I never played it. I'm going to at some point, but I really liked the x Com demo that I saw. Yeah, it was interesting because I think everybody hates x Com just because it is not the old school games.
I ran in a couple of people, a couple of people today, and they're like, actually, like, I'm actually kind of wondering, like why they called it x Com because it seems like it could be a cool game, but it has no relation to the old games, So like, why not there's aliens, little relation to the ald games, as you think, I think, You're like, actually, I was talking to Kat Bailey, who is like the straight aliens, what even even beyond the aliens,
Like there are things about the research and the tactical elements that they brought back in. They were saying, like they went dark, they took it offline for whatnoight. Kat Bailey is a huge strategy fan, and so I would kind of trust her judgment, and she actually was. She was like very pleased. I don't know, if you know, I can't say for her whether she would be more pleased with a you know, direct sequel, you know, right in genre. I mean, it's still a first person shooter.
Makes a long way since they shared it last year, and I think definitely if there's an award for like most improved year of a year. Like, I was very impassed with the changes they were able to make with you know, Jordan Thomas coming on and the guys that two came around working on it. I love I love the setting, I love the art style.
I think the stuff that they've done with the kind of the alien design stuff is interesting at least uh and uh and yeah, and they they are at least you know, paying homage to to to two elements of x COM to to justify uh, you know what, why you would use that name or not? Just like and we own it and and you know we're, yeah,
we're just gonna use it whatever. But at the same time, like I don't think you you can't, you can't base these decisions hirely off of Like if you think about the number of people that actually play at XCOM and love x COM, it's a really small number of people. You don't in a very in a modern game audience. Worked at retail when that was literally my very first video game review and it was well, like sold well.
But but it just think think about the size of the audience. It's it's a matter of yes, it was well loved by a lot of people, then a lot of people. Then is not very many people. Yeah, but there's still the question of do you really need to bring it back if
you're not going to do you know what I mean? Like I'm not saying that it's a right or wrong answer, but you know what I mean, Like if it's so long ago, I mean, sure, you know, because it's because of your logic, you can't satisfy the people who actually care about it. So it's but it's a ripe concept for or reinvention, right, But so why did you have to call it XCOM because why doesn't fucking
name? Yeah? Sure, you're also alienating the people that did like it before, and they're actually gonna be a lot more vocal than the people that don't know anything about it. Didn't matter with the fall Out three. I mean, the same thing happened there. It just didn't matter. The name was pretty close to it was basically, I mean, we talked about this before, and like you can't listen to the lunatics like a certain point, a certain point you have to make a game. You know, also can't
call everyone who has an issue with AIP is street of lunatic. I know fall has a lot of lunatic fans, okay, but I'm saying that the vocal minority is is that no mutants allowed group. You're right, not everyone. We can we can talk some shit about fall Out here, no doubt everyone here. I'm sure it has some issues with with those you know, the way those games. I just think everyone is a fan something has issues with the way they're series have been trained at one point. Yeah, yeah,
for sure. You know. I'm with the scale I love as a sex goddamn pins and needles, hoping that they can bring it back in a relevant solid of games. And I saw a lot of them are shooters, and I just kind of accepted that, and I started looking in the shooters like, yeah, what is everyone doing speaking of in the shooter franchises? That shit in the mouth of its fans. What's the Sonic games? Did anybody play? I watched about fifteen minutes of Sonic Generations and it's really almost
too fast. I'm not the biggest watching three sixty. I think he was playing with sixty pa. I've trapped in the Sonic cycle. You know, I was just talking about Sonic You pour best Choy trapped and as a huge Sonic CV super fan, the fact that they're mining Sonic CD instut for this one make me want to care again. Yeah, I'm might not time to go play it, but I set my proxy Rob to go play it, and he was playing the PS three version in three D and apparently the framemate
was like three He was like unplayable. So now I want to check out the three six versity if that's better, maybe the three DS version. I like the idea of you know, like no shitty friends getting back to basics playing in two D, but it's probably problem. I think it's a cool idea. I'm just wondering if they executed. Yeah, I've heard mixed, mixed reports. You know, there's some different franchises that I once loved,
the now a little over for me. Technic. There are currently six announced techn games, six through the six announced through them there's Tech and Cross Street Fighter, Street Fighter, Cross Tech in Tech and seven Tech in three D has techond with six second games announce there's no no wait, there's no Vita one. Yeah, Technic with you if Technology across second with Cold from inform
checking, we you looks like worse for him? Well, those those aren't make make no think those aren't games like all the stuff that they're showing for like those we you like concept games, just some different you never wanted to draw on his face. That's the thing though. It was mixed a montage of things that were like, oh, he has three and three sixty games and this is clearly that was not right. But it's like, fine, don't show it. Show fucking second, you know, four or five.
I mean it looked like yeah, when tech producer like this is the first time techns ever come to Antendo console and every other console in the world. We're making six different games, so so I mean I mean to speak to kind of like the quality of the look of we used off. It sounds like that that platform like they don't talk specs because Nintendo doesn't talk specs, but also it sounds like that platform is still very fluid. Space specs got
announced. You can go out on Nintendo's website and look at that. You can wait, it's a five hundred, five thousand series. He has all who's making all the parts, the architecture similar to three sixty like we saw today, showed that game like Monster Ghost, the Alien Hunters, see yesterday, Killer Space that day. Yeah, but it has Killer Fiolence from Space similar, but it has graphics that are meant to be like indicative of what the right you know that game is prepa I think as well, Yeah,
don't get me wrong, will you. I think we'll look as good or better. I mean maybe like Fly played it today. Yeah. Yeah, it's a couple of guys from Nintendo will kind of have to go this and we actually guys has to play around with a little bit. I'm curious. I think Nintendo was showing over the years that when they first show a platform to win the launches, they learn and they make some urgonomic changes. And I think they're gonna be some necessary orgonomic changes to Really I have to disagree.
I think that that thing feels disagree it was too heavy. What do you what do you think is wrong with the buttons? Just placements wrong? Uh, it's so for me. No. I actually some time picking up playing it, I needed to kind of do the clause. Well. One thing that was interesting that was pointed out to me is that just that the analog stick is above the buttons, which is a bit odd at it's it's
and and honestly it's just the one on the right. And when I was doing that, the quaw to do both triggers at the same time to bend my thumb down to the face button was very uncomfortable and actually hurt. I guess I'm I'm I am not a two finger on the shoulders. I was there, but I felt like that's what they wanted me to do, the way it's designed. Yeah, I don't think any of the demos were having
you use both. Yeah, that's that's so. It was. It was hard to uh, I mean yeah, if you it's sort of played for tend I think, to get a full feel for it. Sure, Yeah, I was actually so. I mean like I wouldn't I wouldn't be surprised by some tweaks, but I think like fundamentally, you know, size and shape of it, the way it feels, the weight, the look of the screen, like these these these these basic things like and it works.
Like that's that's the stuff you gotta nail, you know. The first let's talk about the first Xbox controller, like like talking about about the Duke, the greatest controller for a first question shooter ever, handed down from God himself to Master Chief for your enjoyment to his Lap, which was the only game you're playing on Xbox One anyway, So yeah, at the time perhaps, but until they came out with Yes Games, there was the Fusion Frenzy demo,
which was fantastic. Wow, Fusion fenz the Shrek game for Xbox One. I remember, I remember that, I'll serve you get the Cherry Race gamer. But that thing, Oh my god, Circus Maximus. Would it be cool to have a duke controller he made for a three sixty? Would that be cool? Sure? Oh yeah, that would be so cool, as cool as the Techy Gold remote for then. I'm sure people broke out into tears and songs. I'm actually gonna because I don't have a remote plus,
but I mean it's partially chance. I think we're gonna. It's it's about time for us to start wrapping this. This this is the real ends. This is this is Bob name, like you know, like it's game of show. Do I do awards or anything? We I mean, we typically don't. I think you know, everyone came away super impressed with BioShock
Infinite. I think that's a clear lead for a game that that all of us saw like it was a game that we all made a point to see because you know, we we felt that it was going to be an important game at the show. Uh A lot. I didn't get to see it myself, and I'm I'm disappointed in that I didn't get to see Pray Too surprise, which everyone ever, like, you know, you want to talk
about most improved, Uh, you know that that first game whatever. But everyone that's seen this what they're showing from Pray two comes away super super impressed. Uh. I've also you know, I think Skyrim is is potentially up there. What are the surprise? What was the surprise of the show, the thing that you didn't see coming didn't expect. I feel like there weren't any surprises. Actually, Pray she was a huge surprise. I mean, who had Like my surprise for that, which is kind of negative surprise,
is that I wasn't into Mario three DS. Yeah, we were talking about that. It's slow. It's it's not just slow that the perspective is on screen, it's it's yeah, it's the camera is weird. But I think the fundamental problem with it is, or what seems to be the problem based on my I played off, I played bold down was just four levels. Yeah, the boss was Sarah Mario boss. I mean, let's not talk.
You know. The thing that's weird about it is that it's this sort of like compromise between two D and three D. Yeah, and I have camera control, but it's like weird because it's it's it's all very grid like, you know what I mean, you're walking back or you're walking to the side, you know. And and Koizumi in the round table talked about how he wanted to bring Mario back to fundamentals and bring like a lot of the the the two D Mario things that had never been in the three D games,
like flag Bowl jumping and running with b into the series. But I just was like, it's neither here nor there. That's somebody was saying actually that it reminded them of Crash Bandicoots too ye levels Yeah, like different, Yes, it does. I thought about Crash Panico as well, which is not I mean comparison Crashman. It was a crappy ripuff of taking on Country, which is a crappy rip off of Mario that is kind of I was just disappointed that I couldn't turn the Tanooki suit into a statue. I tried
that, can you know you? I was asking people that was always forgot. I forgot you really can't. It's confirmed and here's the sty So I'm like, if I'm gonna have the god damn tanukie suit, I better be able to try another d thing is that you uh, like, anytime you stand on a pipe that you can go down, it says a little bubble pub with an R. Hard to go down pipes because you can't use down.
So it's like you are sort of taking away you know, I mean not like you know, searching for the pipes that work, and Mario is like the most fun thing about Mario. But it just felt I don't know, it felt it feels off, interesting, feels off. But no, no, no positive surprise positive No. I don't know if it's a surprise. But Papa and Yo the PSI I've heard ever heard some some things about that. It's just a really interesting concept. I was surprised by the U
rapping during the Fundamacy thirteen two batt Yeah, but not that surprising. They had a lot of vocals in follows in thirteen one music, what's theffing? I see that? I really, you know, I saw the new hit Man game. I only played the last game. I hadn't I you know, wasn't deep in this series, but I enjoyed what they showed of that anyone else played DSX uh outside of the show, But I've heard some pretty bad thing. Yeah, it's it's it's not it's not getting great word of
mouth at the moment. It's poor. It's a bad game. Okay, No, it feels it feels clunky and old is Yeah, the art direction is quite sweet. I don't know about the you know, the comparisons have been made on this very podcast to like Alpha Crowd Call. Oh, I
wasn't at the e A press conference. How does the Insomnia game? It was just a see the trailer, but it was like there was character there, Like it was kind of an interesting blend of of over like no so that the uh you know, they're they're goofy, ratchet and clank kind of sense of humor stuff. And then also the ridiculous weapons of like resistance. What's the premise, Uh, like this kind of things could be like a co op third person two. No, there's like it's a four four person
squad, four person squad. Everyone has you know, kind of unique abilities and stuff. Actually speaking, which this is my biggest surprise of the show, Brothers and Arms, Furious Flaw Sea Sea Bakers here, even though you were showing up, Come on in, sir, it is indeed we are shutting down the show. So so come in and watch the final moments here. Uh, brother and Hard Freis four, which is like that game that they announced ding the Ubisoft Press Commons with just the trailer. They actually showed
gameplay in a theater at the at the USAF. Actually, I want to hear real fast about the trailer. I mean, I'm sorry about the gameplay because I saw the trailer and I'm like, why do I want to play as one of these assholes? It's like just kill like, at least with the glorious bassa. They're killing Nazis. You can't be an asshole if you're killing Nazis. But you can when you don't see the Nazis being Nazis and you just see a bunch of guys jump into a bar fucking with chainsaws and
like like frat boys. That's what I'm worried about that game is that they're trying to be Tarantino like it's like they're not tart for the Nazi toilet in the end of the trail. Let's see what I mean, right, good, it's it's I'll tell you this. I mean, forget the premise. And I think the use of the name Brothers and Arms is bad. Is a bad choice. It looks like the most fun the Gearbox guys are having
over like the myriad projects that they currently have in the works. Uh, Like it's it's crazy and over at the top in a lot of like Borderlands kind of ways. Uh, it has a good sense of humor to it,
and it looks great. It actually looks really really good. There's some amazing lighting, some some good kind of set piece moments in the the Devil the show, and it's, uh, I'm not I'm not sure the tech but you know, four player kind of kind of like to Overstrike, a similar concept of four player cooperative everyone with different abilities and they're doing crazy shit.
Like again, I don't want to go into this too much because we talked about this on this podcast, but my moment, like I walked in a couple of minutes late to that to that that demo, and as I'm walking in, the guys saying all right, so we're gonna take this land mine and we're gonna combine it with this bear trap. And I'm like, all right, yeah, fucking soul. Whatever it is that you guys are doing, then then then yeah, I'm paying attention now. So it's it's
it's bananas, it's you know, it's not serious at all. Like as you can tell from that trailer, I was just surprised that it was a game. After after that announcement they showed that trailer, I'm like, Okay, we'll see this game in nine months because because all they have is the scene to trailer, but the fact that that exists and and that I think it looks uh like potentially, you know, goofy stupid fun. I heard a lot of I mean, there was a lot of positive fuzz. I
saw a lot of people tweeting positive stuff about it. Yeah after it But me, having only seen the trailer, I was like, yeah, the trailer on it's like, you know, it's it's kind of like for me. Also, the tomb Rator thing like take take what you will from the uh you know that kind of that first half of that that the the demo for Tumor that they showed. There's this whole second half they were showing in the back of the booth at Square Enix, which is a lot more open.
It feels more like tomb Rator and you you're seeing like some character growth in it, and it it seems like it really is like the potential for them to really pay off this idea of of you know, the you know, this this young law and that being significant looks fantastic. It's and it's a very very like the weather effects and stuff that they have for the environments.
It's it's it's looking very rest and so I think there was there was a ton of games actually at the show that the stuff they were showing publicly just and it was It's the weird thing I realized this year the stuff they're showing publicly was not the best stuff that they have even to show for these
games. Yeah, yeah, that was a big thing this year, which it baffles me that, you know, and again I don't want to get into it because we're running out of time and I've done this before, but like, you know, you show off mass effecting, show a real shooting sequence, show me mass effects, you know, like I think things like that, like let's let's get into what these games actually are, not just what's the flashiest moment that we can give people and then keep the actual game
stuffed way in the back of the booth somewhere. So I don't know, I'm not sure I entirely understand, like what the motivation is, like, like how how they get to these decisions. But something I noticed and something that was kind of disconcerting during the during the show this year, So all right, let's let's let's move around the couches here. Let's get some final thoughts here. Mark McDonald final thoughts here on on E three, twenty eleven.
Wow, yeah, the way way way too many? Uh first person shooters, Like I think there are there are always too many, But this year I was like some of the press conferences, I was like, wow, okay, like that's cool, I got it. Like I think, whereas everybody was chasing after Halo, now now there's also call of duty and
it's like, shit, everything's got to be a first person shooter. I think too few of them are doing what BioShock Infinite is doing, which I think is like actually doing something interesting outside of the shooting or interesting in terms of narrative. And stuff. I don't see a lot of nobody's like Chasing after Portal unfortunately, Like I don't see a lot of games going. I wish they were. They were more like narrative and puzzle based, the first
person perspective or whatever. Yeah, I guess that's that's about it. Chain. You know, I think it's a lot of real remakes this year, and normally that is kind of a bad thing. But because there are franchises I really love, like Eco, Shadder Classes, Soda Vendors, middle Gear, Silent Hill, I'm lining up to these things. I'll buy them all again. I feel like Connected Move didn't quite prove themselves, like one year later. Yeah, I was surprised at Sony how much time they spent talking
about Moves. Yeah. I thought both of them, I mean, like Moving for huge parts of both of those press conferences, and me, I'm like, can you still kind of take it? Believe it? I own them both. I'm like, Connect I expect, but Move it's like who talks about any I mean for a first person shooter. Yeah, you know, it's it's an option I think for those But like when they're making like start the Party two, I'm like, is that the right answer. Something
I don't know. I don't know. So many dancing games, so many games. Dancing games are the new guitar games. A lot of dance, yeah, exactly, dancing and shooting. That's all people want. It's not the first Day three where we didn't have class instrument game instruments pending. That's interesting, but there's actually piano three, I think. But you know,
I think you were great games. You can have that one. But there were some like gregious no shows, you know, like Last Guardian not here, Medigar Rising not here, So you know, I didn't get everything I wanted, But overall I think it was a good either. Yeah. Yeah, David Ellis, this is a double one, I mean coming eventually finished. Again, we've been out seeing a holiday two and twelve on that one, so but we're not really talking about that right now. Fantastic finished the
fight, start a second fight, Andrew Fish. Uh. The prevalence the more important download downloadable games, board diverse, more fun to play. I played a bunch of on both PSN and XBLA. One other thing that was weirded me out was seeing like at the EA booth, you know where you see like PS three three six seeing iPad? Oh yeah, like what FIFA wasn't playable on the floor unless you wanted to play the iPad version with two I put I pod touches as the controllers. Weird, weird Pere Barthelow thoughts
closing thoughts here as three twenty eleven shots down. Sure that I did not get to leave the booth the entire show, so I really have no thoughts on the rest of the show. Could you see a couple other games from where you were at in Konami that you could what was what was the most annoying audio loop that you can hear from your your location on the floor, really just the one that I was playing pitching the game. I love this
honesty theater. That's you know, it's really a brains lebronze decision. You know, if you pick one character, you get a lot of hit points and additional strength. Three characters. I know you have assist and I think, okay, So that's the worst I was expecting, you know, me being an old school fan of Japanese games, you know, honestly, you know, I'm really into them. I like the design sensibilities. I was really expecting more of a bounce back for Japan this E three, you know,
because like you know, a lot of creators are super motivated. We see, you know, people saying you talk to different creators over estimate Japan. Yeah, I know, but no, it's not that I expected, like Japan to dominated three and I'm not like a complete it was not a single Yeah. So like one thing Japanese developed game in the in the Sony press conference was was was I mean that got your stage time? Yeah?
It was street Fighter Versus Tech or Cross Tech and for and it was a port it was for Vita, and it was the last thing in the entire part. I mean really it was. And the focus was on the inclusion of the character from Infamous. Yeah. Yeah, that was the second biggest
laugh at the Sony press conference when they showed Cole. Yeah. I think partially because it was like way what and then partially because the graphic on screen he had this fucking ridiculous look and so did you and it just was like, yeah, I mean I wonder, I wonder though if maybe some of the reasons for that. I mean there were months of a month of work loss because of the earthquake and everything. Yeah, no, I mean I'm
probably really criticizing. That's an interesting point, and that's that's definitely you know, potentially relevant. I just I thought, you know, with you know, I really had thought there would be you know, like like Iagaki Double's third was not shown. There was just that that weird like we're not showing a trailer, you know, like Kajima didn't come to the show. I was taking more Rising stuff, given that, you know, last year Rising
was like all over the place here. Anybody sort of knew going into the show that Rising clearly Yeah, well I'm not talking about you know, it's true going into the show, we knew. But it's my point is, you know, absolutely big name Japanese games, even small names sort of like interesting and unusual Japanese games, there were no real surprises, and I guess just just reiterated mark Jesus Christ not fucking shooters already, okay, like Jesus
fucking Christ and with dust. Actually I wish I had not. I should talk about CCP more. I mean I think CCP. I mean, let's talk about like this real quick, because it's something that I know, I I guarantee you in like eight hundred hours of Giant bomb Casting one. I actually actually we've talked pretty extensively about really yeah, yeah, gets fascinating, like like that company and what they do. And then Okay, I'm wrong because I always says it's a game that none of us ever want to play,
but we are fascinated. But that's exactly my opinion of it. But all I want to say is like this is something that like literally no one else has really ever done. They're taking eight Universe and expanding it in a game. And both the games Dust and Eve hooked directly into the same server
system, and the things you do in them directly affect each other. And if you started, like say a corporation in Dust, that's a corporation that exists in Eve interface, and you can like basically it's it's, it's it's I really wish that what they showed and looked more interesting because all in concept, it's like this is fascinating. It was just another shooter. Yeah, but you're like you're the troops on the ground, like doing the bidding of
the corporation's high above you. That's really interesting. The corporations at high above you are actual people, yeah, and they're like doing like actual like you know, is a really really fascinating company. So I'm actually glad to hear you gave them. So no, we've we've had them in the office when we were back in Sacelito. So we yeah, we are. We are very interesting. That was one of the most interesting meetings I had, was talking to CCP. Yeah. So well, guys, thank you so much
for helping us a sure closed to to this crazy ass show. Uh. That's gonna do it for Giant Bond, for for our our live show here. Uh, we're gonna have you know, some more content. Obviously a bunch of stuff got shot. That's that's still forthcoming, so uh, you know, look for that on the side over the next couple of days and
I'm sure into next week. But that's it from La So uh again, I don't want to thank everyone who showed up here on these couches, uh, Mark Shane, David, uh Skip, Peter Christian, you guys, everyone else from all the other nights. It's it's been We've been blessed with just amazing guests all week long. It's it's been a ton of fun. Uh. Special shouts out to Drew Scanlon, Vinny Caravella, and for being the goddamn workhorses. I will I will, I will sing, I will
sing seeing from the top and and yeah, also our tech guys. Alexis our designer for our current amazing front door design, which is has been a boon for us in all the video stuff we've been doing this week, And to Dave Snyder for getting all the tech working on the back end, also doing a lot of hardcore design works. So thank you guys so much for making all this possible, allowing us to have these dumb ash and anigans and
three to five hour long podcast indulgent. So with that we say goodnight from Los Angeles. Good night bye. That's fun. Wow. Thanks
