Hey everyone, It's Tuesday, January the twenty first, twenty twelve, and you were listening to the Giant podcast. I'm Ryan Davis joining me today. Mister Phinney, Caravelle, Hi, mister Patrick Clapp, mister Jeff Gerstman. I work for a living. Don't call me senior. Bradley A shoemaker, Bradley K shoemaker. What's the case stand for? Was? That? Was that a pregnant pause is what you call that. That's what that was.
That's exactly what in the biz, that's what we call I've used that now twice in like the past three days, and I'm a fight it might start over over using it because it is so much fun. Yeah, getting getting overly pregnant? Some protection on your diction. That was any caravelais and gentlemen, Actually pretty good. I thought that worked out pretty well. You can't get pregnant that way, but you can't get pregnant pauses that way. But
things like that. I heard you get off a wet toilet seat. It was so it was you can get it from French kissing a wet toilets. I just hang out in hot tubs, but only but only in France and no joking. Don't don't mess around with hot tubs, Patrick, they will fuck you up. The heat. It's bad, it's bad, but it's not hot enough. That's problem. Keeps everything alive, your diction. I heard you of any maybe not putting it together. No I got let it think no, no, no, no, I got it like Dick.
It was like number fifty seven and the one hundred and one grammar book I got from Scholastic Readers Digest, Like where is this? It was just like fifty seven addiction like use it where you need to cut? Cut to eight year old Finnie. Remember fifty seven through sixty five addiction that shit is hilarious. Get out of the book fair. You know it's just a little flyer you got, you know, then you got to order from. Oh, you guys had a book fair. That's what you called that. That was
the book face. You just got it on our desk. Sometimes sometimes there was a book fair like we convert. Yeah, exactly, like they took a classrooms and set up all the books. You go in there and just buy the books right then and there. I remember that, But I'm with Brad, I remember just kind of more often. Yeah, he comments on before they would use they would use that that terminology to cover. Also, yeah, Scholastic is sending out flyers so that one get a copy of I
got My Lord of the Rings through the Scholastic book fair. I don't think I have any more Scholastic products in my house of dynamite. Yeah, dynamites, some rain your rick good quality reading. Yeah, because and they say print is dead. No, yeah, prince dead, yea prince dead. Huh yeah, pretty much. Last time you saw a copy of Ranger RICKI you saw anything printed anywhere? Just read his blog. Now on this table to have an iPad and a piece of paper with chicken scratch on it.
This really took me like a solid minute to decipher what was going on on this piece of paper. I thought, like, Isni gonna get murder or people saying like weird things about Vinny behind his back? That also, but this is not what that is. So Vinny your best grade school diorama, go, I can't remember something with dinosaurs and Gi Joe's probably in it.
Yeah, how the dinosaurs got extinct? For context, folks. Before we started recording, Vinnie was declaring that he wished there was a museum for old school dioramas, but the shoebox vari specifically. Yeah, no, whatever, you can fit it in a cardboard box. Sometimes you go and you buy two big pieces of card stocking. You just like tie that ship together, like boom. Diorama. My mom used to get really into him. She got really excited when I had a diorama project because she would to get way
into it. When do you think? What? What do you think? The diorama cut offf is after seven, so everyone in this room's we've aged out of it. Then we're done. Unfortunately, if you said twenty seven, yeah, I'm expect February seventh, Din, We expect a diorama from you by the end of the week, and we're gonna help you make it. Thanks. I want a diorama on Video Game News. We want a diorama on SOPA and PIPA and what's the what's the what's the new European one
as cap? Yeah, yeah, they're trouble man. I know what we're doing. On Friday, it was clay testa. We'll make it. Well, yeah, I'll bring in my glue gun, some glitter, make a volcano. I've got a bedazzler we'll just go nuts on it. We fantastic, Patrick. Do you remember any of your remember the round? I specifically remember there was a volcano project I had to do where to make the volcano?
We didn't use like clay Dad, how is the volcano project like like past like nineteen fifty three, How is that still allowed to be I don't know, school project? But whenever my dad had us use the material, it was it was cement like and it was it ended up weighing over thirty pounds, and so my dad had to be like bring it with me to school, like drag it out of the car, like I felt like we had used actual cement. Dad, just like drop you off and be like
fun. Yeah, I have to imagine like at the time that way as much as you did. Yes, Like that was that was like an ant carrying a giant stick and then after after school just dropped it behind the school and I'm not I'm taking this on a bus, don't pick me up, so get here. If you've a preservation of those things would be really hard. That's why it belongs in a museum. But I'm saying like it there's something like that in la Is called the Museum of Jurassic Technology. I refuse
to say anymore more about right. I failed to make it there the last time I was in La. There is a diorama section of that museum. Wow, dedicated to trailer parks. Your your lack your your determination not to say anything else about it. You live if you live Jurassic trailer parks. No, it's called the museum and durast Technology. It is a strange place. That's all I will say. Because it's it's it's it gets spoiled if you Okay, I went in there thinking it was about dinosaurs. It's not
about dinosaurs. You can see the obvious pull for for Patrick. Yeah, it's one of the best things in La by far. That the that in the Time Traveler Museum Urged store, But was your was your and the Hollywood side check it out? Was the bridge? That which is what they signed you up for on Twitter. Yeah you guys for the Hollywood Sign. Hollywood Sign. We got a top secret monument that you could be tweeting for. You're influential on Twitter. Sign up. Now, let me tell you about
the Hollywood Sign, guys. It's got a lot of letters then used to see Hollywood land and then the land burned down. That actually happened. You know, I don't know where you go for giant letters, but I you know, I go to the Hollywood sign. They're big letters, Sister Island. You see them far away? No Moi heads cluttering up the crap. Oh did you see that? They started digging around the Moi heads and it turns out that there are Moi bodies right How far does this go the dirt?
Yeah, you know, it's amazing. It's it's all all those copies of Gradious. It's so amazing that I'm baffled that, like, why didn't anyone else try this? That We're like, nope, just heads obviously, just billheads taking out of the ground. Like can't you do like an X ray of the ground or something like is there some way of Apparently they had, They did an X ray with shovels S rays. They use powerful s rays not fit for the human. Get your body out of the way of
these s rays because they will fuck you. Don't need like a lead shield over you know, you're junk for sure or else. Those S rays will go right through them. Yeah, just just go clean through being no good. Yeah, I saw that It was amazing, but also reminded me of the old Far Side comic where that was the gag. Oh that's right, like there was a there was a Far Side where that like just straight up that was the joke. But it turns out fun funnier than they knew.
Farside harbinger of our times. I know you think they're little bodies, like, well, the heads ie, they're proportional. The heads are the dominant part, but there's an equally sized body underneath. Its crazy and again the craziest part to me, how did how did we just now figure this out? We were happy in my day? We were just happy with heads. Yeah, that's all we had. And who knows what else is underground? We need to get some shovels, fun more. Whatever candidate funds the s
rays? That's going on back in what's under this building? What's going out? Can we use s rays to get to the moon? Probably? Yeah, built out of shovels, Jeff, you any any dope dioram stories. So we're doing today, you know, we're just we were gonna didn't leave it off. It didn't live in a box, but I did do like a like a paper machee kind of hill and then put soldiers on it.
I believe it was a Civil War oriented thing. Uh, you don't have to like paint part of it to be like some kind of fake rivary looking thing. And yeah, what did you use like chicken wire for like the form underneath it? That seems like something you would do. But yeah, I don't remember Brad any any memorable. After making a joke school project for making a joke about depictions of a Garland, Poe writings, I think I know. The only one I can remember is a depiction of which which I
can't remember, had to be the most obvious one. I hope it's not the obvious one. But I can't even remember that. So the heart beating under the floor, maybe it was the tell tale heart, tell tale heart maybe, so that would be the obvious number two cask of a Montelato? Is that Poe? The dude gets buried in the breakd up in the wall? I can't remember a dark kid man? Yeah, hell are you doing blackness? And can you tell everyone's soul the black heart? Brad Shoemaker.
Yeah, after that card game, I realized that after cards get humanity? Oh wait, he is actually the sinister one no one knew. Turns out that's the twist ending giant bomb. I liked our rad was the evil one. I liked our second day after hours drunk game. Yeah that was that was good, which you won again? Worse saxophone solo. Yeah, the cameras are off. It gets I don't know how I'm feeling about this tested camera though you get none of you guys can see it. I plugged it.
I know it's not on, but still no, I mean, I like, I didn't even like that it was plugged in. It just in the path of it, you know, you feel like it's just looking at you and judging. Take the USB cable to put up on the table where we're see it, and I think that'll be the thing that help that's happening. What if it's broadcasting anyway? All right, okay, I think that's the other end of the cable, the cable that is like a modern DAYCAO.
Like, no, it was right here and then incriminating footage if you gets out anyway. Still, still, what are you doing in this room that the lightning crashes and brain beats the window? Did you make a diorama? Ryan? Uh? Yes, I did. What did you make it on? It was a science experiment on hummingbirds. Did you have a real hummingbird? Yes? Oh my gosh, well I didn't have him, but
I did it. I did a sign, wasn't I did? I did a science experiment to see if hummingbirds would react to differently if the diet, if the food was died right or not. Did they know all that government money, Yeah, down the tubes to turn their public school systems whatever. The government now knows right, they can dial that food right if it want, It's not gonna be big. That's why crunchberries disappeared. Nobody care the red dye industry, like, you don't hear about that anymore, do you
know? Nobby was like, yeah, it was, you know, reden number five. You're always hearing about all the different reds ye. Last time you heard about any sort of red food coloring? Well, probably like the last time that I had colored east riggs. When was the last time you colored east riggs? It's nineteen forty seven, right about the time you're the Great Depression? Was the last time that anyone cared about red food coloring?
And that's when you're dying that's when you were in school. When I was in school, Yellow number five, when I was in school, was the one to look out for. I was trouble. That was one was the one that was going to kill people, right. That was the one that would supposedly produce the size of certain anatomy. That was in mountain dew and I drank mountain That was exactly the story. So you drink too much mountain dew. There that But then there was there was the not gonna make no
babies on this mountain dude drinking anyway? Red two? What was the red? That from Star Wars? But they had a right it has to be from Star Trek, right, Yeah, we're talking Star Trek here red because they had to take Red M and M's out because of it. I'm just looking at Jeff and he is just looking so blankly back at men. You remember, No, what pretty Cavell? What games been playing? Dude?
I did a project and call. I don't know if it's a diorama, but it was involved ants and I built Uh could you make an call leaving food out on your floor? No? But I bought ants over the internet, which I thought it was weird at the time. I put a sandwich out once on some piece of cardboard and then the ants got it, and then I picked up the cardboard and then the ants bit me or stung me or something. And I don't like the red ants. I don't know those
the ones that they can They were ants in my backyard. Backyards, those aren't indoor well something around yeah, whatever it was they it's yeah, I did not expect. Just a little bubble, I said, Ali came up over then a tear drop. My my, it was a it was a paper machee. And then I wanted to build an ant farm with electronic gates that would open and close, and I hooked it up to a computer. Uh. And there was motion sensors for what means did you up to a
mind storm? This was through ye, I had a bread board and it was it was a programmed in like basic uh. And I forget what the thing that interface with the computer was. So when some ants would go over here, they'd go through a motion sensor and it would shut the door and trap other ants in this other part. And there was like a screen that was all like metal gear style that would put exclamation points over the part and
like a countdown. So were you making like saw for ants, this sick little fun house, a toilet full of ants syringes, you'll have you will kill these other ants with your action? He ants right. The key was in one of the ants and they didn't know to dig it out from behind their little ant. It turns out ants don't really like to be in anything but dirt. So I'd buy like three poles of ants off the internet before I figured that, burned through a lot of ants dig where I don't know,
Uncle uncle Ed's ants on dot com? And may you ever do an ant farm, gottle fashion ants farm? No, they send you the fucking ants in the mail. You get ants in the mail. That's just crazy. I can get ants. You want ants, We'll go find some ants. Get sandwich did one time? I had an ant farm in the mail away for the ants, and then they send you the ants ants. Ants keep saying that ass and uh, I left it on like my kitchen counter, and then uh, like native native local ants found it. I fucking
got in through the air holes because they were small enough. They were way smaller than the big ants and fucking destroy mail order ants. That's terrible. So the mail or ants did not stand a chance this whole vial. That was the end of the hand. No, I had to buy. I had to re up and buy more ants. I'd be more careful with them next time. You can't use the indigenous ants I could. I don't know how to catch the local ants. They swarmed in there and took over and
then took off. Well no, no, no, they didn't get into the ant farm. They got into the vial that that they can't that. The new ants came, but they didn't stay in there. And one side, no, no, all I mean also it was full of dead fucking ants. So both sides suffered casualties. It was it was not just completely one side of the cree. There was a horrible ant war on Warney four something something my young mind hadn't even considered to be laid out bear in front
of me. I don't know where you got your hummingbirds from. Those were local, locally sourcedically made. Yeah, we're cruelty free. Did you see this guy smuggling hummingbirds this morning? No? But I love when I see that some guy. Yeah, I've seen I've seen that story about a guy trying to smuggle hummingbirds internationally had them. He had him lining the inside of his jacket. Ye, like together gonna go up and like open your jacket
and start spensing some humming girds. I've seen I've seen pictures of people doing that with other sorts of exotic birds. Yeah, I guess they'll just like tape them up and then line a jacket with them and try and walk through and some catches and go just like, did you think you're gonna do? Yeah, jacket full of birds? Why is your jackets squawking? Open it up? A fly away? Stupid these birds time to strings, big dummy. I don't have any humming birds though right now currently. Yeah, I'm
sad about it. The ants at them. Maybe you need more not red I had back I had backdoor or backdoor backyard humming birds for when I first moved to my door. Humming birds. That's something else that I'm working on right and it's also a diorama, but it would not be appropriate for school. All right. I don't know. My humming birds disappeared and I don't know what to do about it. They'll come back. I've kept food out, no like they like a year and a half they've been just gone be
call what you're playing? Skyrom great? Jeff Gersman, which plan? Uh? Reckoning? Can you talk about that? Sure? Do you wanna? Yeah? I do. It's the review can't run for like another week or so, can you can't? It's like there's a bunch of it's like push people talking about this game. So I was like, whatever, I likes Penning Arcades thing. I'm not sure we're supposed to talk about this. Gonna talk about this game? Right? I bet if they exactly? Yeah?
And then other people are running up any way more Reckoning is pretty good. Yeah, I think from what I've played with it so farspiciously review. I'm not gonna all attach a number to any how many how many Facebook likes would you give it? Well, if it doesn't have a number, it's not a review. We all know that. I don't know. I can't. I can't speak to the number of Facebook likes. It's the only I don't want to give any kind of trick other than I've played about thirty hours of
it. Okay, what would you uh? I mean, I know there's a demo out and it's been on for a while. What would you like in this game most too. You know, I feel like the like what I've seen of the combat, like, you know, Kenner Ralston and he has ties to the Elder Scrolls series and everything, So obviously the first jump
everyone makes is fucking Skyrim. Yeah. And after I played it for a few hours, like last year, at some point I was like, oh, it's gonna be like another Elder Scrolls game, but the combat's different, but it's the Elder Scrolls kind of connections. The similarities are in real broad strokes, you know. It is stuff like you know, yeah, you're gonna find lock picks, and yeah, when you steal stuff and then the guards catch you, they're gonna take all your stuff, and there's jail and
and and all those sorts of base level systems. But this is like a Elder Scrolls light in a lot of ways. And that's not necessarily a bad
thing. It's it's a it's a pretty different game, and that it's a lot more focused on the quests and getting stuff done and a lot less on This is a big world and everyone's gonna walk around town and who knows if they're gonna be where you left him, and oh god, the game broke like it's you know, it's more focused way like none of that, uh, you know, it's it's yeah, it's like quest markers here, the guy will be standing there, you will hit a on the guy, you
will talk to the man, the quest will continue. So it's it's it doesn't feel like as as a this like this huge open world. You're not climbing up mountains. In fact, you can't even like run off ledges. It's like that kind of like Zelda style or Gears style or something where there are specific jump points where you can jump down or something like that. But but for the most part, it's you walk where they want you to walk. The math. You don't hop your way up mountains. The math felt
very constrained from what I saw. Yeah, which again not necessarily a criticism, that's just that's the design philosophy. Yeah, it is, it is. It is different Along those lines, do you find that you care about the world or the story or the underlying fiction it's or the games so heavily reliant on Hey, this is a fancy world with good combat, which has kind of been the hook. There are some really interesting ideas in the game's
story. I like the way I think that's a really solid premise, and then just like it's kind of what the nature of some of the races in this world and kind of the nature of the conflict is really interesting again kind of in broad strokes, But yeah, there are a ton It's one of those games where it has a main quest line and then faction quest lines, and then there's a bunch of side stuff. Like the side stuffs all been pretty flat, but the faction stuff get go get twenty of the y Yeah.
Yeah, it's it's never been like go get twenty of the well, it's it's very rarely go get twenty of these, but it's usually like there's a cave over here, go run through this dungeon and there's a dude in it, or there's a thing in it or or whatever, and go here, do this. And there are a few that are like, you know, like there are ten books throughout the world, get them, but it
actually will highlight on your map exactly where they all are. It's not like, you know, just hope you find these ten books over the course of your adventure. It's it's kind of good and bad, I guess, you know. It's it's it really is just kind of run to the dot on the map and do the thing, and then run to the next dot on the map and do the things. I mean, the mini map even looks very immo like yeah, yeah, the little circular map. Yeah. So
is it open world or you can go wherever you want? So how do you feel, like level wise, does you feel like it's doing the zoning thing of like, well, we're gonna match the level of these bad guys do is? Uh? The open world, like the outer the overworld, uh is kind of set so you will eventually run into areas that are too tough for you. You know, they give you kind of like red names for the for the enemies and stuff like that to give you an indicator like,
hey, you should probably turn the fuck around. But it seems like when you go into caves and when you basically when you load into kind of the smaller areas, those seem like they're scaled a little bit. Okay, because I'm like level twenty or something like that and mostly been doing side stuff, so there are these faction quests and these other things that I need to kind of go back and do that the areas outside of these caves, I'm
just like laying waste everything out there. But because I walk in the cave, the name color on the enemy's changes, it seems like it's it's bringing them up a little bit closer to to what my level would be, So it's preventing it from just being like a total cakewalk, Like I haven't really leveled past the game's content or anything like that. But when I'm out running around the world, like a lot of a lot of those areas seems like
they're still set. There's a lot of gray guys that I'm not getting a lot of XP from killing. And then you know, the combat is a is a big deal. It's you know, I don't think people are gonna confuse it for like Ninja guiding one or something like that. God of War. It's kind of war. So it's you know what they've They've got a few different ways where you could hit the button more or less really stupid. Can I confuse it for this? Looks like totally okay, yeah, you
know what. You know, what it seems like to me is a better face these people are out there. Let's not discount the stoop and oh yeah, better fable. It's kind of a different way to put a more complex or a deeper fable, right, uh. And it's stuff like you know, you're signing weapons to buttons. You have two attack buttons, and you equip two weapons, so you could have a bow on one and daggers on
the other. It's not like a light heavy sort of deal. So it becomes like as you work your way up the tree, the specialization trees for these weapons, it becomes at that point like, Okay, if I hold down the button for a little bit, at this point, there's a charge attack. If I delay and then hit the button again, there's a delay attack. If I roll first then hit the button, there's a dodge attack. And if I perry then there's eventually like a perry attack for each of
the different weapon types. So it's not super complicated. It is not the deepest thing in the world, but there's kind of just enough to it to where you feel like you are, you know, playing it and doing stuff. And I'd say that the combat's pretty satisfying. Is there a point where you bring up like a moves less that says like xxx, that's why. Yeah, it does have a moveless, but it's not that because it's it's it's one button per weapon, so it's you're just looking at the moves for
a specific weapon and it just shows what you unlocked. It'll be like attack, pause, attack does this. If you just keep hitting, attack it does this. If you hold down, attack it does this. It's not necessarily like a big commo. It's not. There's no trees, and it's not like a branching sort of thing. But you gotta work all those things into one string. But it's tied to the weapon. Not necessarily too. That's cool. And then if you haven't put points into those weapons, you
there, you you can't do the delay or the stuff. Is it more weapon types or is it like weapon like this sort of types with you, it's it's dagger sword, great sword, fablades, you know, like they're massmers hammer, No mass staffs after Scott and a tiny staff that is a web like a wand type but it's not it's not called a wand I can't remember. It has to be on a chance right morning. No, No, ma chain mace is on a shade. I think it's I think that's
the proper terms. Little ball, that's just the maze. I thought that I thought the little the morning maybe it is. It is. Yeah, but yeah, morning star. The morning Star is not a maze, right, it's a morning Star. Maybe maybe a maze can have a chain, but it doesn't have to have a shade. With much difference between a maceon mornings like like like a rapier could be a sword, but not all swords. Yes, gross, uh A mace is like a club but metal spiked
or something. You know. It's like basically just like here's this blunt instrument. No chains. It's not numb chucks, I know. But what you see you get the mace with the ball and swinging it around you like a whack of dude. That's a that's a without without the without the chain on, it's a morning star. Or does the morning Star? I have to have spikes? We have that, don't We have that book with all the
swords and maces and booze swords. Maybe there's a subsection in there I lost my player's handbook or also in that it probably would have a lot to say on this stuff. I think you guys, I will receive no less than it doesn't emails. Give me a very specific information about the differentiation between a mason the morning Star. I have the cover to my player's handbook, but
all the pages are gone. What the hell happens? It's good if I want to like read porn somewhere, I would hide it and double that bet and say that I will delete every single one of those emails. Right, So right, you don't actually want this information? No, no, I don't. It comes in every week. You guys want to know about like the fucking international history of the penny. Just read the bomb cast the mail
account and you the new Wikipedia that account that it is. It's it's like, yeah, that inbox is googling everything that we talk about on this show. That's in email form. Very helpful. It's super is occasionally you get someone who has like weird personal experience with the topic at hand and like, let me tell you the truth about this stuff. That blows your mind. So yeah, keep it up every one. So what kind of character are
you? I've been putting most of my points into finesse, which is the roe or a tree basically, so there so there's no like like set classes. It is all just sus usually have three different skill trees to put points in. One is the kind of Warrior track, one is the Magic User track. And one is the kind of thief track. Yeah, yeah, does that? Do you feel like that kind of encourages midmaxing as far as it can. I mean, it kind of depends on how you want to
play it. Like, I've been going mostly after the passive abilities because they seem more interesting. I have not been super interested by what I've seen of the kind of active skills and magic abilities and stuff like that. Just hasn't seemed that boots and stuff. Yeah, yeah, so be like, Okay, now I do you know, have a twenty percent chance that when I hit them with this bow they will bleed? Cool sunglasses stuff like that. Yeah, now I've got awesome shades, hot rims. When can you do
the reckoning? Yeah? What can you reckon? I reckon? You can reckon whenever you want. Really, there's a meter that fills up that is reckoning. Yes, like, yeah, time to reckon. It feels full of fate. And when you get one hundred percent fate my fate meters, you enter reckoning mode by pulling both triggers and then everything goes into slow motion.
You basically wail on everything around you at that point, and then the last one you kill in kind of a quick time event sort of thing, and then you get like hell of bonus XP for all the stuff you have knocked down while in reckoning mode. That final thing is called a fate shift kill. I think, oh yeah, the whole thing is so you're you're a character without fate in a world that is very heavily dictated by fate. There's a whole race of people that just go around, you know, they're
more or less immortal. When they die, they eventually reincarnate, and they just go around kind of reliving the same stories over and over again. They're all songs, so they're just like that. You go to the House of Ballads and taking part. But you know, because the world is coming apart and you are this guy without fate in the world, like your mere presence is upsetting the way of things that like it. So you end up in
a couple of missions along that when I thought were pretty interesting. You're going along actually be enacting some of this stuff, like Okay, yeah, I'll be your guy for this thing because the other guy's dead, so I guess I should be the guy to do this because that guy entered she shouldn't end
up dead. Some outed up dead so people, I'll come with you on this thing, and everyone's like losing their ship because yeah, structure is kind of like they know, like when they get reincarnated, you know what you're supposed to be doing. They don't know that, don't know that's that's I don't know deeper than maybe because we'll bring that up. Yeah, that's saved
that for the MMO communism. I mean, keep mind like that. You know, this is set in a world that they are also building an MMO in, and you could really see how that stuff's gonna work because you have all these magic elven creatures that just kind of reincarnate on their own, and then you are the first uh of the young races to come up off that pile and be resurrected. But this game period of time before years, so
sure, so this is time for every plenty of time. Yeah, plenty of time for them to figure out exactly how you're resurrected and turn that into a character creator for an MMO and death penalties and whatever they end up doing on that stuff. Kind of yeah, you see that sort of stuff coming a mile away. Yeah. Yeah, So it's basically Terminator two with yeah,
with fably I love it. Yeah, what a great movie. Sure, Yeah, I mean there's a you know, it was one of those things like you kind of look at the world and as I was kind of going through it, I was like, this game might not be that long.
But now that I'm thirty hours in on it, still digging deep, kind of going through, like I finished two of the faction lines, and you know, there's any there's any good because it I wonder how much that is, Like like Skyro if you just were just you just do the main quest games pretty short, right, you can do that, you know, I bet, I bet this game would probably be that long or or or
if you're something, if you could focus. I don't really know, Like I'm kind of got to like basically, probably what's the end of the first act of the main story or something like that, kind of the first first pivotal moment there or something. I'm not really sure. But there's a whole bunch of area on the map that I haven't even been to yet, So it seems like it seems like there will be a bunch more to it. Kind of hard to say, it seems okay, mmm, I don't know.
I'm intrigued, Yeah, I like that premise. Yeah, yeah, that is perhaps the most interesting thing I've heard about this game so far. Yeah, the game parts, maybe it's not bad, but it's like the premise sounds fucking riot. Yeah what was the I didn't play it, but wasn't there an Infinity Engine game that had like the exact same Planescape was a plan Scape Torment. It doesn't sound exactly I saw some people comparing it are
similar. Yeah, you die and become resurrected, but this sounds like this is like you also have like a skull for a friend more you have a skull for a friend. No, but sometimes you find skulls. Are they friendly? They're just dead? I mean you just pick them up, put them in your inventory and sell them like just like likes. No, it's just you know, because you're searching around, it's like, oh, look at that two swords and oh a skull. Well, if you saw a
skull, take all is fewer button presses than take swords. So it's a treasure to somebody. What's the going wight of skulls? I don't know the way the the UI works for selling stuff, You just kind of take the things you don't want and hit the AD two junk button and then when you go to any shopkeeper, you just hit another button marked sell all junk. That's great. Then it just like items into the X number of of gold and that's that's really handy. How much would you like if you saw one
out of flea market? How much did you pay? The skull? Skull? Is it? Is it crusted with gems? I need, I need, I need it my rama as much as money as my adult skull. Any cranial trauma? Missing some teeth? Oh? I was about to ask about is there any skin left on it? Or muscle? Mean skull jaw yes, jaw o yes, job yes, job, but not attached separate? Yeah, well you got set it on the set it on there like
tendons and ship. What's twus pay twenty bucks for full skull? No cracks or anything, nothing like I said, missus for teeth yeah, Christmas and some teeth? Yeah. Does there have any feelings? No? Those have long instances. Do you know where it came from? Any mineral? No? No, no sense of of ist or origin? Human skull probably probably yeah, any human, but I don't know. There are very very strict regulations about the handling of human remains. Do not make naked time with him.
It's like kind of rule number one I found out. Does that make the prince go up? Or if you want to, just don't tell the seller either way, Like if you're buying the skull out of flea market, they probably aren't gonna care with like a certificate of authenticity the person died natural causes and no no again, no no, no, this is a real skull than nothing. Zero prove that this is a real skull. You can't prove that it's not a real skull. That's true. Zero a fake scull.
So I'll trade you my real skull. He's gonna get this skull and you're not gonna get shit. And then you're gonna thinking about it's gonna be like I got the sweet skull, and you're like, I'm gonna have the best. It was a bag of socks. I about a bottle of crystal skull vodka. That stuff is awful, isn't. Yeah, well it's vodka. No, it's it's bad vibe. I've had it. I don't know it's his vodka. Yeah, well yeah, the one time I had to
remember not minding it. But I was mixing it into stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah, if you if you were, I tried drinking it straight about okay, I would always mix it into something. I have a bottle of it. I was watching Ghosts Skull, so I have a bottle of its signed by Nana Ackroyd. What that's authentile. It's just a long story, especially because it was given to me by Dana Akrod like four years ago. But it was only signed by him about three months ago. Wait,
give us the short version. You on that one until next week? No, fuck that? Making up travel. I went. I went to a Ghostbusters remember when there was a Ghostbuster remember remember the thing? And went to a press event and he was there. Yep, and man, he's way into the occult. Yes, that's all he would talk about. It took you three years, super crazy and total committed. Believe it. So you're talking. It took you three years to join the cult, work up through
rank to get close you five thousand dollars I do. The first part of the story is the three months ago getting signed a part let's see you what's my sister's apartment? For a while in Brooklyn, and then I got ships in North Carolina, and then he came through town. Okay, and my parents saw that he was coming through town. It's your parents, and they grabbed the bottle lid. He split and went off to meet them, was buying like four more bottles of that stuff. So now that I hear that
it's bad, I'm kind of bummed out. I mean, what was he doing was like going on a tour. Yeah, yeah, going on a tour, like signing bottles of his vodka and talking about Indians, talking talking about ancient aliens. Have you watched the like the promotional videos he's done for that incredible he goes on and I've also watched all the UFO documentaries he's done, Like almost the commercials almost have like a little bit of a wink to
him though there's almost like a like he's taking this so seriously. And then he's talking about Crystal Skull fucking vodka like the other stiff. There's a Netflix It's on Netflix, Incidant, but there is a dank royd UFO documentary like saying, yeah, autopsies didn't heed what I what I love. Also, he was in Sneakers. I love Sneakers. Yeah, I mean to love that movie. If you go and read like Terminator two Sneakers. You can watch either, right at which would you rather Watchers? I think I don't
want to watch I think I would rather watch Sneakers. I don't like Sneakers. Sneakers at turnag Toterminatory. I remember most of that. Patrick, I've never seen Sneakers. You've never seen We'll get it out there. I haven't either. You guys, you know what. You are going to admit that unless side saying the rest of this podcast we're gonna watch Snakers because Sneakers is tricking amazing. I have bought like three copies of Seas about hackers spies.
Hackers and Spies. Isn't it like a crazy ensemble? It is a ridiculous No, it's Robert Robert, It's Robert Redford, Sidney Potier, Ben Kingsleyans eleven. No, you're thinking of true romance. It's another single word title money ball. It was in that. It was like it was in the nineties. Keep going. Maybe there was gambling involved. The Oceans Left seven twelve, Okay, like Winded Sneakers. It was another movie that ended in the yard. It was like it was like the last movie that River Phoenix
did before he died. I don't know what I'm thinking about it. Okay, so the River Phoenix think kind of carbon dates it to a certain degree. But it's all sit in the Bay Area. It's all about computers and hacking. This sounds awesome, It's fucking amazing. It's really it's really, actually actually just a great, great movie. Like it's super clever and a lot of fun. Holds it on Netflix. Who made it? I want to say it. I can't pull any director name nobody, but Ben Kings
is the heavy in it and he's really good. Timothy Busfield is in it. Yeah, it's a good pull. Minor character Stephen Tobolowski is in it. He plays Ned in Groundhog Day. Yes, I can pull character actor names movie. It's a great he just fantastic. Me a random what we were what were we talking about? Random? Character actors? Robert Forrester, Keep you going till It's the one that you can recognize Jesus J. T. Walsh would be until he died in like the late nineties. He was
the bad He was the bad guy government dude in everything. Who's the guy from Ghosts who says good off my train and then jumps around. Oh that's a good pull. I should nah, I don't know his name. I like that guy. Yeah, he's good. That's a good one. Yeah. Nothing. It's not a Netflix instant, but it's worth it's worth having a disc for. Okay, i'll lend you my cops. I don't know, but I'll lend you my my digital versatile disc copy. Okay, you're
gonna show up with a laser disc if you still have it. I may. There's a distinct, there's a very powerful possibility. I may own Sneakers on laser discs, which honestly would be the perfect it would be the ideal medium to watch Sneakers on. Yeah, Japanese version of Sneakers. After that, we watched CB four. I do not own CB four on laser disc Boo. Sorry, I just had to dig through them. I hadn't move a bunch of my laser discs this weekend, shuffling furniture around. What the
fuck were we even talking about? Reckoning? Is all right? Yeah, it's it's just it's promising. I'm enjoying, enjoying what I've seen so far. It's out another week, so I'll keep playing it and maybe it'll all fall apart and be terrible. Maybe it'll be pretty good. It actually parts of it seemed like it could go either way. That's the weird part. There's a lot of really good things about it, but I'm kind of interested in seeing, like kind of how it wraps up is the pacing doesn't move
like it's you just you just fast traveling around that world. At some point, you know what the busting ass around there. When people talk about Elder Scrolls, like the map seems like the obvious comparison because it looks exactly the same. Yeah, it doesn't. It doesn't look like the Skyrim matt Well because it's not like it is. It's parchment. But I'm saying, yes,
constant and from there and stuff. Yeah, yeah, it definitely does does that, and there are tons of things on there, but it's not like But also at the same time, it's not the sort of game where, I mean, you could do it, but I don't really see a good reason to just like I'm gonna go wander around like no you should. Is it all combat? Is it all like are you doing like tech or persuades or yeah, they're stuff. If you go to a town, there'll
be a ton of quests. They're just like, run around the town, talk to this person, can do this for this guy, and there's this stuff. But you're gonna be fighting it seems like yeah, combast thing. Yeah, interesting game. Brad's going on over there? You're looking at your foot. I'm excited looking sideways at me. What's going to figure it out? What's up? I was thinking about the nineteen ninety six Who directed it? God damn it. Oh you're a Brad Pitt movie. Dupid mobile IMDb
be the director. I'll give you the movie nineteen ninety six, Michael Sullivan Sleepers. I don't even know what it's about, but yeah, Sleepers is horribly depressed movie. But he was totally in that, Brad. It's about child molestation. Oh Jesus, Kevin Bacon, Robert de Niro, James Patrick, right, Kevin Bacon, A bunch of kids. That's the movie, dust Dustin Hoffman, the movie The Driver. I'm not is it Kevin Bacon in another movie where he touches kids too? Doesn't Kevin Bacon look like a
guy who would fo kids? Like there was one that he was in like five years ago. Throw a mustache on Kevin Bacon. Does Kevin Bacon mustache on most people? He's Sleepers is one where he runs like the home Yeah yeah, and it's all flashbacks, flashbacks, and then their adults they're all sucked up and it's really depressing it. Why would he be in two movies where he touches kids. Maybe that's just you know, his thing. We get really good at it. But he's really good at acting like he's touching
kids. Should be thinking about the one I'm thinking about, Like he goes to jail. I think is like goes back in a society and like the struggles of a man of a pedophile trying to be in a great society. It's really I watched when I was Kevin Bacon certainly has access to the broad ray and shoot mustaches of people, of kids. What are you talking about? He knows everybody. Yeah, okay, got it. I didn't know where you're Kevin Bacon. Sorry, we got motive. But seriously, Sneakers
is really good. It's good, all right. Verifying that's right, my my voices, my passport, verify me. My name is my passport branch Jumaker Soul Caliber five Uh huh yeah, it's uh. It is the latest in the Soul Caliber franchise. I was shocked last week looking at this week and realizing, holy shit, sold Caliber five was totally coming out this week because we saw it ever so briefly. I like, Brad, you were there, Alex was there and saw it at three and it was but it
was but it was back room. We were not allowed to play. They had two characters in it, they had two stages, which but they were like a lot of these assets are from the last Soul calibers, so this isn't even what the new South Sol Caliber is gonna look like. And now they were they it seemed like they were only showing it off because they thought they could win like an E three award, right, But the thing was like what they showed seemed like it was more than seven months out right,
which is you know where we are at this point. So I was just blown away. I'm like, they finished that gate from the state that they were in, or at least the state that they were showing, I guess they had to have been full somewhere. Yeah, uh yeah, it's still shocked. So is it? Does it not seem like a game that was slapped together in six months? It doesn't okay, I don't know. Well,
I mean that's to me already. You know, I could go back and play a bunch of Soul Caliber four and try and figure out how much they changed the stuff, And it seems like they've made some some interesting changes to the systems, like you know, adding supermoves and doing stuff like that. I guess, uh, would you say they're trying to modernize it.
I mean some of the stuff they've added, you could draw parallels to Street Fighter four, you know, it's kind of their ultra equivalent and something that is uses meter to do better versions of existing moves, almost like an ex move is in Street Fighter four. But you bring out dudes. Yeah, yeah, you can. It's got some new characters in it. It's got Eco in it, Yoshimitsu, you know, mits a Rugi. Dudes from a Soul Caliber game for the are pretty in there the base. I mean
there's like also eight unlockable characters. Clicking there should not have to unlock tip. I don't think Khalik is on the list either. Time has passed, so it would make sense for for some characters to not be in there. On the Giant boat, like Giant Staff then what kalik Han. Yeah, that is what. Uh, I don't know. I have not played every character yet, so I don't really know. MAXI is the Eddie Gordo of Soul Caliber. Yeah pretty much. Yeah, yeah, okay, I'm not
the only one. Yeah, once you kind of figure out what to look for, you you know how to stop it. But that's the same deals Autie Gordo. Yeah, just stuff just coming out all over the place, and you're like, what that's not appropriate here, sir, But that stuff puts your numb chucks away. Please say they are children around. Yes, I know they're called none to chucks, but please put them away. Just the same. This isn't Kevin Bacon's pool party. It's not appropriate. You
know. They've got say, some decent online modes in there, and stuff with you know, six player lobbies or eight player lobbies and multiplayer lobbies and uh yeah replay downloads and uploads. Namco Games seems stuck in a real creative run. Yeah. I mean the stuff they're doing to this one seems interesting. It just the whole thing. Playing this game really got me thinking about, like, why does anyone care about Soul Caliber? Maybe not in that
kind of a despay but weapon based fighter. I think that's what's always made this series unique. But for everything else that has been shook out since kind of the last time that the fightings were really kind of big and relevant, it seems odd that that's still caliber of the games was the one of the few the I think, you know, it was a game that hung on that was amazing on the Dreamcast. Yeah it was. It came out at just the right time when a lot of people were maybe looking for for something
new. It looked outstanding. It was deep. It was deep, but like really easy to pick up. So it was one of those games like you could you know. I remember when it came out, there were just like people coming out of the woodwork that wanted to play Soul Caliber. Uh. And I remember that seeming weird as someone's like, well, why don't we play some Street Fighter instead, and they were like, no, because that's hard. I don't know this button does the he just keeps whipping those
numb chucks all over the place. So uh, you know. So I feel like it gained that following there, and that's probably why they still make them today, is because probably hoping that they can kind of recapture some of that stuff, but I just don't think they have. They've also made a lot of them. Like other other fighting franchises, they have taken a break. Sol caliber has been been going steady. It never really stops, but it's never been annual or anything like that. I mean, it is just
it's just like five. Yeah, there could be there would be an argument for like I mean, like like Street Utter four didn't change the formula too much, and you know, I just there's not enough time between those entries for people to like, really I could really go for a new Soul caliber. It's just oh, there's a new Soul caliber out of course there is the stars right, which that's to me that at the point, that's what your hook is, like, maybe you're maybe you need to rethink what s
to me. They poisoned the well the first time they did that, I think the very first time. Yeah, I felt like that so Calibo had they had linked they had linkedawn spawn just how she doesn't even have a weapon. It was they had like bracers or something on him. Yeah, they put some shit on it, his hair, he had his hair. It's
true. That felt like a tacit admission of we don't believe in any of our characters, or we don't know what to do with this, or so we have we have no no faith in marketing this stuff on its own. So let's get linked. Let's prop it up with with like uh and and yeah, and that's spawn sure enough. The news unit's quite like sure, sure enough. The GameCube version was the best selling one, right, uh yeah, so that was bothersome to me, and that kind of I thought
it was stupid. I don't know, it's it's it's just gimmicky. Yeah, if you're gonna do it, do it. I mean I like Tom Mortal Kombat handled it, like if you're gonna go weird, do it. In DLC, it wasn't really an option then, but yeah, yes, yeah, and I don't think it's great in Mortal Combat either. It's it's more of the point. They'll go for some thematic consistency, like right, I would like to see like he is a historically themed character, but I
think his face looks dumb. Yeah, the model is the model doesn't look right, but like visually and in terms of origin and and even has decent weapons, like he fits in a hell of a lot better than Darth Vader. Yes, but the net code seems pretty good, and you know, it is still soul Caliber. They've done some stuff to it, Like I imagine there must be some people out there that are excited about that, but yeah, you know, I'm not. I'm not really thrilled about it.
Seems like a well made game that uh hopefully that someone isn't it wants that. I guess It's never sol Caliber has never been in an arcade series, has it? It was? So the original Soul Caliber was was in arcades. Yeah, okay, so they when they brought it home, they made soul Blade. Uh and then remember that this place second game was soul Caliber, So this is technically soul Edge six. Soul Caliber Arcade was like a System eleven, System twelve yea game, right, yeah, so it looked
like a PlayStation game braically. Yeah. Yeah, that was the thing I remembered, was like, there wasn't there was a yeah exactly, yeah, exactly lizard Man lizard Man. No, that was not the name. Wasn't that was the name. It's a lizard manet Tech and trying to get all fancy given people names to their animal characters. Roger lizard Man lizard Man. It's right up there with Stolemania. Just hes got skulls. It's fucking crazy. All you need done. And I put down for three more months of
hosting on my track Mania server. So that's not going on. Yeah, that's not going on. He did something wrong with my hosting, I'll have to No, that's working again. Were able to get an again, Yeah, we just just wasn't for I don't know theopened the new password and all this stuff this morning. This morning, I tried to get in and everything was going sideways. I don't know. My domains were hacking up. Yeah, nothing good in a fool nothing good. Yeah, dream host get your
business. And then I had this copy of Final Fantasy thirteen two in my bag that I didn't play great, which I felt pretty good about the grand scheme of that. But there's someone else wo feels less great about that. Let's hear it. I bet that Rory Rory wants to play it. That person is brat your mouth. Speaking of quick time events that reward you with loot, we were experienced points somewhere somewhere in there. I've been holding that
one in my brain compartment for real. Late Transition twenty minutes smooth. Why Brad isn't allowed to do transitions? I don't. I don't think I should be allowed to talk no more, no more, no more. Segways for Brad come off with such a street too. So speaking of Square made RPGs about time traveling, there you go, there it is. That's much better. So I'm thirteen two. It's really like Chronic Trigger and King of Zamalo Reckoning Headed. They wrapped all up and we save yourself sixty bucks. Just
get this one. Don't have to get those other two, right, So what have you been? What have you been doing in the game? Hasn't been playing this? I feel it's like every twenty minutes. I'd just hear he doesn't seem like. Man, it was insufferably boring for the first two hours, Like I didn't think I could go on. That sounds automatically way
better than the last one, which was boring for like twenty hours. Oh it was weird because that one was boring because they didn't let you play the game, right, They withheld all of the interesting mechanics for literally about twenty hours. Yeah, that sounds way worse, but the story was intriguing enough
that you kind of wanted to keep going whereas here they have. So they give you all the paradigm shifts, like all the stuff that made the combat cool you have in like ninety minutes or two hours, but all of the characters from the last game that you may have become attached to are missing an action. Like you're playing a bit character from the last game who doesn't have much of a personality and she's joined by some dude out of time who also
is pretty flat, and what the fuck is going on there? Yes, there there's a movie like the most like a fullying voice I may have ever heard in the video games. Doesn't just say coopo full like that voice und like it's voiced by a five year old. I don't think that's what what in my mind, that's not what a movie would sound like. Moogle would sound like like a Cabby distribute, like a dude from the Bronx or something like, No, you're crazy? What why would you say that? It's
it's it's basically anime. Of course it's gonna sound like the way Brad made a sound. I don't know, just whenever I see a Moogle, I was thinking, like, well, to offset how ridiculous, like how almost sarcastically like periodically cute a moogle is that you'd have to give it the thing sarcastic or keep in mind the source material, who who's making these games? I didn't, I didn't, I didn't have This is not sarcastic. I
have this great depth of cultural understanding. When I first saw him Google, all right, you thought the Bronx, I thought, yeah, it looks like Google, Like, hey, I'm a Google, smoking a cigar, Yeah, yeah, chomping on his little baby. Ye yes, a baby huey Danny de Vito a like day to Vito from Taxi. That's what I expect a moogle to sound like. Disappointed. I don't think that was the thing that was gonna disappoint me about thirteen two. But carry on, hang
on, all right, let me get this straight. You're saying you're capable of being disappointed by Final Fantasy thirteen two. It means you were holding out hope that this was gonna be the one. Well, it was like, I'm Gonnas and this is the game. Well, I'll say this, that's
that's acceptable for you to sorry, I played it. I'll say this, Yeah, you played thirteen I'll say this though I never played it, but I really loved everything that I ever saw about Final Fantasy ten to because I felt like they took all of the melodrama and self seriousness of Final Fantasy and just turn it on his fucking ear. Yeah, it's we're gonna be as crazy and goofy and over the top as as fucking possible at all times where I take any of the series and like, that sounds great. That sounds
like such a great change of pace for the entire Final Fantasy series. That one was like like those ladies went save the world and then they became j It's like, fucking great, that's so stupid weird. Now they fight with their dance moves. Yeah, it's like costume change. That's fabulous that I love it is fabulous, fabulous. Got real dressy in that game. You
certainly that's a good game. So so based on that, based on what the last sequel was, I thought like maybe thirty two they'll go completely side. That was a reasonable hope, and I'm going to dash it now. No, I will say, like six hours in now, I don't not want to play it anymore. Okay, so that makes sense. He's broken through that part. I'm going to continue playing it, finish it. Indifference has been delivered, some kind of verdicts overridden. Yeah, Like the stuff
that was great about the combat is still great. It's still a lot of fun. It's still like the fast and fastest paced and probably most most dynamic Japanese RPG combat I've seen in years, not that I've played a ton of those games for a while, but the way they take like the MMO constructs of like tank and healer and DPS and stuff like that and kind of flip them stuff around and make it move really fast and make you flip back and
forth like that. That stuff is really satisfying. It just feels so nonsensical, like so much of it. The story is just like it's a lot of disembodied voiceovers from characters who are not even physically present in the scene, kind of philosophizing about nothing, and you just feel real disconnected from what's going on. It's hard to keep up with, it's hard to get invested, it's hard to care. So it's fun to play, but the story it's hard to get into. What do you think this says about the future of
Nova Fabulous? Well, they went, and they already went renamed that other final Fantasy thirteen game the Mobile one. Yeah, when they pointed it to the up and coming platform. There's still Versus somewhere out there. Oh yeah, yeah, a g to became fun a fansy type zero. Yeah. Versus thirteen theoretically is still in production. Who knows. I don't know the rain We kind of went off on this and quick look, but I think Pat Patrick and I at least agree that the rain of ruined well I was
just going to say, has perhaps continued long enough. Let's get some new character designers in there. I just can't even think I want some more. I want some different art. I want I want the games to look different. Don't like any of the nothing tape, the way his characters look. It's just like I don't want to think of all over square stuff to I have had enough. I've had enough fucking zippers and buckles and sequins for one
lifetime. I mean, you boot up thirteen two and it's like the logo and then SQUANICT and then just bigger than the Squan character illustrations to tuos anymore? Like fuck you like God? I get it. Feathered hair, yes, the feathered hair is prominent, yeah, everywhere, and he's everything. Feathered hair is a good look if you could pull it off. Yes, yeah, I guess it's just it's enough. I don't even know if he's responsible for all this stuff I dislike about like modesty, it just epitomizes this
left turn that, like all their stuff took well. I was I was moving Chefflin media around all weekend, going through libraries of stuff, and was staring at my copies of Final Fantasies seven and eight and was thinking, like, you know, I really I can't even imagine what Square could do with
a Final Fantasy fifteen at this point to like spark interest back. It certainly does not seem like it is continue down the path that they have struck since, uh tell me, one thing they could do is drop drop fifteen drop. Don't fucking call it? Is it not patently ludicrous to anybody else that they're putting numbers that high on this on this franchise? Though it's crazy? I think it's ballsy. I guess it just seems like the only one that
seems Yeah, like everyone else, why is that one? Like we should probably stop putting numbers on this. Yeah, but they haven't tenn't ten yea, they just broke ten. These guys even shot themselves in the foot by adding eleven and fourteen in there, which should have just been online and online too. Yeah, they patting their numbers, but that's not think of it. When they get to twenty. Yeah Fantasy x X Okay, they're talking,
that's the only that's just a two D fighting game. What's the only lazily falling back on supil numbering is not the biggest problem that they have,
but it kind of embodies the problems that they have. I think, like they've they've just been coasting, They've been just I think I think the problem is just like even if you're a Square Nix that if you create something that would have been a Final Fantasy game and you don't call it Final Fantasy like you were just even money on the ta Yeah, we call it Final Fantasy, my thing, my move, a Final Fantasy story, sure, Like like can't you moogle town on the subtitle instead the Final Fantasy Okay? All
right? It was the last one they ever make, just it wasn't the name of the first one because the dude didn't want to make anymore. No, it was because then they were going to go out of business. Last. That's that was. It was age. It was never commentary on the state of the company. I thought I had heard that it was because like the developers like I don't want to do this kind of fund game. But it was the first one that he had made. Okay, it was pretty
early for for the genre. Yeah, you know that. That was like, yep, this last thing the company's making, and then it turned out sold really well, but eventually it will be the last thing that he ever makes. Well, it's ironically it sounds like I was interactive. It is gonna basically save Square Nix. So you just said the craziest thing hit Man fifteen will be. I just can't save anyone. That's ias kill all these
final characters. When when they came through and showed that thirteen two a couple of months ago, like the way they talked about the influence of of like IDOS and talking to Western designers, like they seemed actually really interested in Like they'd never done focused testing before until thirteen two was the first game they'd ever done focused testing, and they'd learned that from IDOS, and they'd never done a vertical slice, which is you know, like right, So they did
do it thirteen two. They said they started exploring the options of it. They said they were excited to do that from the start on future sets. That's what they need. They I don't know how they do their feedback, but I think a Western influence. I don't want to you know, necessarily Western made a final fancy game, but having a little more understanding of what the audience wants to make able to react quicker, which I think Western stuff
does a lot better than maybe. Yeah. I think it's one of those things you just run into that situation, like do you focus test something to death and end up with just middle of the road, boring garnage or do you put put some kind of vision behind it. I think at this point you know that they probably need I mean, they might benefit from a different
vision. Well, I think I think the focused testing thing, it depends on what you take from it, like yeah, like don't go and change like fundamental things if you think these games cell I mean, you know, for all we know, Squares super satisfied with how they do every time out and why change because I mean the franchise obviously does have a fan base.
From my point of view, they're not doing anything to bring new people in, so obviously the numbers must be slipping a little bit every time out right, My impression of thirteen was that it did well, but not well enough, not as well as that's why we're seeing right, Although ironically I would not in any way recommend somebody played this if they hadn't played and enjoyed the
last one. I feel like like the sentiment coming out of Japan of like, you know, we want to take you know, notes from the West, we want to take influence from the West, but it's it's like, Okay, I appreciate that sentiment, but it doesn't seem like a lot of them understand or know how you end up with stuff I like Lost Planet too, Like what is that? What do you think? What do you think that means? When you say taking influence from the West? Speak not that
name? And I think maybe having you know, having us there and say well and to actually like explain like no, this is what we mean, focus testing, We mean things like this, this, This might sound like the most obvious thing in the world, but you guys coming off krona trigger might appreciate it. They have done away with save points. You can save anywhere you want. Now if you quit the game and load back in, it will load you exactly where you were standing, like auto saves. It
also has checkpoints. Yeah, like it'll checkpoint every I don't know, it seems like every ten fifteen minutes and you can manually save. So like that's I mean, it's a little convenience thing. I guess. Yeah, it
makes it makes a better experience, Like that helps. I don't remember the last time that I lost like really significant progress in the game other than I don't know, Dark Dark Souls, other than games that are being deliberately done on a laws And you say, you say reckoning as an auto save. It has an auto save, but I don't know what It's never been useful, like it's it's always any I haven't died a lot in that game, but every time I've died, it's always reverted back to the last hard save
I made, So I don't know what's going on there. It's a little if you like some people are still clinging to that old PC way of doing things to some extent, but actually didn't mind the same system creature. Yeah, it's you know, it's the checkpoint. This checkpoints as long as they're
spaced. It's because the tension you get out of the lack of a check point is like when we did the final boss and we went that whole like Jesus Christ, we had to do this whole hour again, it adds a lot of like different perspective if you had to do it all again, probably like bulls. But because but because we didn't do that, it added so it was so much fun to the whole experience. Yeah, absolutely is.
I mean, like the thing about the focus tessing stuff is where I wonder how Squares getting their feedback, Like when they came through a show and we're talking about the game, when I remember asking them like what is the different feedback you get from Western gamers and and Japanese gamers and how you incorporate that into the game that they said, well, we look, the Western gamers said they like quick time events, so we put that into the battle.
So who do you know where quick how? What? Where did that come from? Like all the bosses, all the boss fights so far have had quick time events on them. Lame and and that's that's where are you pulling this info? How are you pulling this info a results are they checking?
What are you going to? The other Western guys said, there's stink all over it, And and that's the thing is that I bet that there actually probably was like a useful kernel, but not without the right likes of interpretation, Like you just take that as oh, yeah, quick time events are
good, put quick time events in. And that's the note that ends up going to different But the way the way that they're implemented in this game is almost insulting because like that combat does demand a lot of attention and strategic thinking, and instead they throw all that out the window at the end of the boss fight and make you just hammer a bunch of buttons to win. That sounds really stupid. It's really annoying because I really like the way that that
stuff plays. You know what, they need music Dan the boss fight. Yeah, music is a change scheme has like it's like some death metal boss music. Yeah, all of a sudden he's find his boss. Hey wait, is there like some horrible jay rock having in the back down with the dude screaming at the top of his lungs. Yeah, And then it was kind of funny thirteen that has some really good, like traditional but it was good Final Fantasy issue music this not so much. Well, what do you
want? Do you want them to stick to all that stuff or do you want to totally reinvent it? Do you want gears dudes in your Final Fantasy games because you want it redesigned by other people? Because that's where that goes, isn't it. There's gotta be a better way to capture more than two art styles to go ship. I was about to make a joke about them
putting Eco in there, but they're putting Eteo in there. Yeah. Yeah, there's a DLC skin coming where one of there's only two party members in the game, and one of them you will be able to pay a fee and put into an Eteo costume. This an authority unless that was some kind of elaborate hoax, But I saw a concept art, so I'm inclined to believe it. It's really kind of takes any enthusiasm I have for future Assassin's creed between the Soul Caliber thing and the Final Fantasy thing, like you be
soft, get control of your brand. Well, what are you doing? I want to ask you? I was moves in Soul Caliber is called rescue out on the list. He says it when you do it, it's not bad. The guy die. It's not a one hit to kill. No, it's just a thrown just does the world then disintegrate and he sits there for five minutes. To him, it's super is called what some full supernization, full synization. That's kind of clever. That's not even the worst handling
of DLC in thirteen two, though there is thirty three. Wow, apparently that's on the way. What damn. I don't want to get into that prest much. Which outland there is there is? Which tale of this game should we focus on? There's too many really good evidence that thirteen three is coming, like havnt domain has been registered trademarks, and there's another stuff involved with how that game? Yeah all right, yeah, you know what,
I'm almost back in one three. It's almost so fucking stupid. That's the one you have belief in. There's it's gonna file the moogle. That's how they're gonna ground it in reality to Brooklyn. The Moogle's gonna try and read again. There's an Xbox exclusive that you can shell out a dollar for. Okay, pay a dollar and get this great weapon, but only in the
Xbox. Probably the worst part is the Lightning who is the main character of the first game, yes, and who is the only person featured on the box art of this game, is barely in the game unless they put her on the box art again, unless you buy the DLC pack that puts her in your party. Oh wait, that's not like a separate story. You're literally buying the character. My understanding is that after you complete a certain point in the game and you've bought this DLC, then she shows up. We'll
see, I'll see how this p it's out. I'm so got enough momentum at this point the story. Uh, it's actually now that the story is moving. So the way it's broken out is that you're actually like basically picking
levels from menu screen. It's like your time travel interface, and you can basically travel to different times in different places, and you unlock more than one at a time, so you can actually go to like, all right, I've got this thing over here that's ten years in the future, but then this other thing over here is three hundred years in the future, and you end up jumping around a lot and you actually start getting some of the chronic
trigger effect or you know, back to the future if you like, like you you very quickly meet characters in one place, and then you go like another five years in the future and they remember you and you see how they've changed in the last five years. Like there are there's some cool connections being made with the like the temporal stuff. How much time do you cover?
What's your what's your maximum? So far? I've gone the game starts three years after the end of thirteen, and I've gone up to three hundred years ahead of that. Okay, but you're not going further. You're going into the past at all. I are not, at least in the story. Pretty neat if you actually went back to the events of thirteen. Yeah, like a little looked pretty extensive. So yeah, there seemed to be something like thirty thirty five. I think I'm passing a lot of those are optional,
but uh, I've given us some leeway to get better. It seems like it might have some promising elements, so I will keep going report back bad about the Bad Music Finals. Yeah, you squeeze anything else in there. We asked that franchise to take a break a couple of years ago. I just want to play it, not Fighter, they did not heat Yeah, White Wizard, Yeah you into that. That's totally what I would Black Wizard, even Fighter just f G. H Ranch. You want to Castle
or who it was? Four? Yeah, I don't think you would actually wants to play Final Fantasy. I don't know. He makes six, man, I can't believe they didn't do uh, dude, like make a three DS remake like that. Six. Besides being ridiculously hard, that DS remake of four was really good. Yeah, like they did a good job. They're holding out and six will get it. It's due eventually. That's like the la the one they have not touched of the two D Final Fantasies because
it most eventually do seven. I don't know. I think eventually they'll break that. I mean the options of other stuff here, it's guaranteed. It's like it's just huge money. I think they just have to save that to absolutely dire situation. But if they realize they worried that, like that's gonna come out and then who's gonna like that, all those dudes will be who wanted to play it are dead. Wow, that's twenty years from now.
They'll be like I don't don't. But they also run into the potential that they put it back out and then people sit down and play it like, oh oh m, I mean I might be in the minority. I don't think they I don't think they care what they say after they bought put Yeah, maybe I'm in the minority. But seven is the point in my curmudgeonly memory, when that series kind of went off the rails. Everything's like that's when the when No More came on board, and like they changed. He
wasn't much he much wasn't much of an influence. He designed all the characters. Sure, like they went from Amano to to him for the I just been like, like the look and the look and the tone changed a lot at that point. In addition to the presentation, like they went all heavy CG, they went three D. Also the characters, it's still a little of the humor from the from the kind of non polygonal ones. They're still a little bit you're right, Yeah, well you're right, because yeah,
like the directors, a lot of those same guys were still there. They're still the last one that he was involved, true, and that made it a little more fun huge. I think a lot like you might be. I thought that was just the name of his mustache. Yeah, indeed, I don't know Brad should make you play anything else or just all fun fantasy, all attached. Japanese game week around here around these parts, I guess they're playing think what other things? The mortal comments time. Oh on the
Wednesday. Okay, that's not Japanese. Tell you what it is I Residevil. Oh, I'm sorry, were you trying another one of yours? I'm sorry I didn't pick my back it up. I'm gonna lay back, go for it. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, all right, let's do this. No, I'm just gonna say the name of the game according to the box. I'm gonna cut all this other stuff out, and he's got gonna have any context. No, man, put that box on eBay. I'll give where we worshiped to Regaton, give game
Fax credit. They put up some pole something about it, like ranking the Resideval games. And they put it up purposely misspelled. Nice. How does that? How Apparently only some of the US boxes even it wasn't even like the full run, so maybe they caught it at some point. Well, we're not going to recall these they passed the savings out to you, you know they did. They knocked ten bucks off the price. You're like all right, which is uh, one of the things is making me like that
game more. Actually, like in all seriousness, like five six hours into the story now you're not super sweet, it's pretty cool. On the beginning of that game, much alike thirteen two, they break it up in this weird episodic format where you're never in one place for very long, Like Resident Evil is a lot about like good sense of place, right, like feeling like like that mansion, right, like being trapped in this place and trying
to get out or the police station. Yeah. Yeah, And and the beginning of this game has you jumping around a lot, not just different places, but different characters. Like it doesn't feel like you can really get a handle on what's going on, but you can jump in now you can jump in thirteen two, though, do you like platforming and predetermined platforming with a little blue or you can jump over you want? It just doesn't do you
any good unless there's a little blue circle there to jump off of. I'm sorry, Uh, different characters, yeah, yeah, it feels weird and departmentalize. At first, there's like three kinds of enemies that you're killing over and over over, and it just feels limsay and Finn. But around about episode four of that game, you kind of get situated where it seems like the rest of the game is going to be uh and it's starting to feel like a good, proper resident eval game. What is the what would you
like in the combat most too? For okay, if you don't have the circle pad pro which is a whole separate conversation, or well, let's have this conversce because I definitely want to have that conversation. Yeah, yeah, if you she slapped that thing on. It plays like RD five Okay, well actually I'd have to go back and check. It plays like a third person shooter. Okay, I'm trying to but but it's independent. It's independent movement and aiming. Okay, but it is not. It's behind the back.
It is not like old school fixed cameras, No, absolutely not. It is it like the perspective is totally ARE four R five. You can actually set an options first or third person for for the aiming, but it's it's very specifically ARE four like you plant yourself and you can only rotate and aim without the circle pad. But it's also that revelation is pretty linear, right, like if you're not in like giant open spaces like are five,
or you're running around like not individual rooms. No, like the ship like it's a ship. It's basically a floating mansion that you're in down to like there's a casino and a giant banquet hall. It is. It is a straight up mansion on the sea. Does anyone say that, like, come to my imagine of the sea. So are you kicking it stars stops? Yeah, you're you're switching between Jill and Chris in their in Their Stars days.
Yeah, this is a set between four and five, which lends some credibility to the theory that this is that PSP game that never came out. Yeah, uh, which I ever kicked around a little bit kind of looks like a PSP game, but yeah, it's you know, I found a key. Are you doing a key with an anchor on it? And then I want to open some doors that had anchor symbols on them? You're doing some resident evil shit out there? Are Have you found some herbs? No?
But I've used plenty of herbs as how about some sprays. Uh, no, spur well the herbs when you pick them up and then sprays when they go in your inventories. Figure that one. What about liquors No, not yet, No liquors. Shotguns, yes, upgrading shotguns. No zombies, bio orchanic weapons, bows I have. I have bow bait in my inventory, like grenades that draw them to them and then explode. Yes, actually zombie dogs. Yeah you know what that Jill refers to them as zombies
even though they are clearly bows. Somebody needs to check the stars and tell her I think or two about zombies. Stupid Jill. You're right. It is very linear. You have one objective at the time. The rooms are small, like there's typically only one place you can go, but it's pretty moody. It's pretty atmospheric, which is weird because I figured, like, going into this, I was like, why would you make it game like this? On? What does that screen? Two and a half inches?
The three D is pretty nice, it is. The three is pretty good. Other than like, you get a lot of weird like more patterns on some of the textures, which makes it seem like they were not meant to be seen in three D but other than that it works well. But all right, so without the circle pad pro, what what's the what's the aiming mechanic? Like? How are you are using the stylus on the screen and then no, that's a toggle right, yeah, it's just hold hold the
left shoulder button and go in aiming. Okay, keep tilt tilt control. There is there is gyroscope aiming, but like that that's basically incompatible with three D right, Like, so you have to take a pick and I'm gonna use three D. Yes. Tell me about the circle pad bro, you got the chance last week to use circle padro for a couple of hours at least, it sounded like it was a really good positive experience. Uh. I mean it makes the game play better, you know, being able to
move and shoot at the same time, pretty useful. I don't know that it's worth the bulk that it adds to that thing I think is massive. It's huge, and for how big it is, it feels light. It feels cheap. Yeah, it feels kind of hollow. I actually thought it a light is not how to describe it. There's some weight on that thing.
Well yeah, but cheap, cheap, yeah, yeah, flimsy doesn't feel solid Chap Brad's point, there's a hollowness to it that's sort of like this, you're just gonna disintegrate in my hand, or even even just like holy, I'm like, well, you could have made the smaller. Yeah, it makes you wonder why is it so big if it feels yeah, it's kind of empty because it doesn't. It doesn't feel like, oh, you made it bigger for ergonomic purposes or something. It's like no, it's
it's just kind of bait, like, yes, skip getting bigger. You made the design for it, and it's like, could we shave No, I don't shave anything off of it. You're fine, Yeah, I don't know. It's large, so distinct improvement in gameplay though, for for it's not a super hard game. You can totally get through that game play on without that thing, Like it might be a little more pleasant to use it,
but not necessary. So you could you can perfectly well run into a corner and hit down and be to do a one eighty and then shoot the monsters that are coming at you. That works, and that's twenty dollars cheaper. Yep. Yeah, so it was really weirdly thirty dollars cheaper because the
game just dropped. It's really weird before that price drop, looking at this thing and going this was a seventy dollars proposition to play this right with this screen resideval game that with this clunky thing, like what people freaking love resume? Yeah, I don't know. People are about resume quite enjoy it. Zombie bananas. You need to use your owners say it's probably have the brown spots. It's gross. I thought it looked pretty good. Yeah, yeah,
I'm I'm more into it than I was. Jill Booty, Yeah, what's up? What's going on? Is that taking advantage of the three D? Yeah, it actually does. It's right in your face, except that
accept that ladder climbing angle. Yeah, missed opportunity on that one. She was wearing some kind of like some shine of suit and there's just a speculative highlight just that's just rounding her like pristine marble asque booty straight up like somebody's shining a flashlight directly on it. Botaf all my favorite movies, The Dog and Dog Can kind of kind of ask you why you're saying booty booty, because because if you were to see her ass, you would say that's not
an ass. It is not a dairy air. Yeah, naughty posterior is a booty about rump. If she were to shake it, then I would so is mister cal Is he a downloadable character? Can we get him in there? She's too tight for a run? Can we get three d into jail? Can can miss the call? See it and judge on whether this is a I think rump is tighter than booty. Really, bootyty is everywhere there is a change fallen into the wig. I believe there's a bubble ass
quality to booty. Yeah that maybe sing from yeah rump. I think of a little more like meaty and like you know, shake that rump rump shaka. I think booty. I think like bobbling all over like a bobble head, but two of them, but like like like you can puppet is a question mumble is a question of muscle tone. But is it a question of tone or is a question of size. I don't think they're size both because
it's a width issue. Like I think you could z access like a stick out more somehow, like you're gonna autely on this topic, give us a call for five away three five ask Master collar go ahead, it's com I think the booty, I like the out of the booty for the backs of wheat up like a song. And Jeff could tell this because no one else would reference an AMG song, but calling into a fake radio station somebody right in the other day. She was wrong though, because it's a DJ Quick
song featuring AMG. So that idiot cut him off when it asks I've got I've got Sean Damron from Blizzard on my Facebook friends list, and he's the only other person that with any consistency can can drop Bay Area mid nineties rap references as you can. He's a great man. He is. He is when it comes to that stuff. There's these second to none. Bob's not bad either. Biz Blizzard pr team top of their Bay Area mid nineties independent boom or Hiphi focused. Yeah, that makes younger, it makes sense,
makes sense. Sean's from the old school, so Jill's ass hunts it is prominent. He's wearing like a cat suit thing. Kind of you realized that the discussions like this is why they put these things in these games. I'm not saying any of us necessarily setting back games. I'm I'm saying I don't think we are the tarret audience for that well, because I'm bothered by like
there's a character art stuff for for Residueable six. I think it's Jill that's in a skin tight cat suit in the character ar she certainly was in five. That's what I'm thinking of, is the is the five? It's crazy, it's very crazy in a low cut jacket, like really like just character inappropriate, just like she was a classy woman her circumstances in five, kind of she is held against her will, like she's not choose that outfit, but it's like she returns bleach blonde hair, skin tight cat suit. I'm
like, what are you doing? It's bad. I'm saying that booty is distracting. I'm not saying it's like like this is hot, Like yeah, run around like I can't tell what's going on because like bright White like distracted by Booty, but like not in a good way. Booty distraction unreleased print song. Yes, there's a very bad way Booty distraction distractions that in the vault. There's thousands of songs that he has that. But he was like
this, I need my follow up to Pussy Control Booty Distraction. That was the best I can He's like not good enough. Prince knows quality controls something something now again the Japanese could learn from Prince. Prince should go home. We're not playing no, no, not anymore. You don't are you saying Prince should be the main character of the next Final Fantasy? Why the fuck not thirteen three starring Prince? Like these? Any of these? How about
Prince in a Prince in cool Spot too? Be pretty cool Spot? Yeah? More Spot games. I want to say there was one in development. I don't know if everything out, poor Spot. Back in the day when you could have a soda mascot be the hero of a successful video game game. It was he game bafflingly better than you Anoid crap an got it Virgin Interactive. Remember that David Perry joined Annoy got a raw No, I don't know, Yeah, you got a game whatever? Man. Capcom published that
one. Really Yeah? That game came out in Japan, totally different. They re scanned an existing game, took the ninjas out, put the noid in, or took the main ninja, left all the ninjas in except for the main character. Right, and change like the end game is you know, they just put pizzas in it. I'm just gonna say, yeah, I'm just gonna yeah, that's right. Then they rereleased it in Japan,
right. Uh. I'm gonna say that that was probably a pretty shitty ninja based on what I've played, based on how he handled as pretty annoyed, pretty as I've never seen you annoyed. I don't want to curious now. It's quite interesting. It is, okay, it is interesting. It is interesting. I'm holding out for the Little Caesar game. You play that every week I lose so fucking Justin McElroy apparently has a drive through Little Caesar's near
where he lives. He's making ship up so he doesn't have to get out of his car for his fucking five dollars telling stories for his fantasy podcast. This isn't even makes fantasy podcast. He has like eight of the men. What it was just about TV? TV? Like that's a thing, not anymore. He should record the pizza buying process. Yeah, exactly, that
is what I want. I want. I want video video shot from the passenger seat of the car of them driving, then a second shot of the car going through all time coded use your Blazynski brother money to do something good for make this happened? Agreed, it's Brad, that's it. Yeah, that's a review forthcoming for res navel Curling on me, especially at forty bucks Patrick. Last week we finished Crona Trigger. Yeah, we did. It
seems like a lifetime ago. It really does seem like a long It's like that first day when you don't have to do one that you're like, oh man, that's that's my that's mixed feeling of like, oh god, freedom, I could catch a cold now, it would be fine. I could I could think about like a big or something, but like no, no, But it's like the first day you kind of miss it. Yeah, well the first day you're like, oh no, no, no, no no. And especially because I hadn't I had not yet shook the Corona Trigger
music that was by the last week constantly playing in my head. It went from being the occasional hum to just at all times Corona Trigger music in my fucking skull, King of the Gatto theme out of my head. That's the one that yep, let's partially because I have it is my ring tone that probably isn't helping you any but it's that really, it's the real and we're receiving. Yeah, Hamster from the apop community, Big ups for the absolutely got the music. Vocal remix, vocal remix, Scott Lyrics. Yeah,
it's pretty good. References, silver points, yep, it's well done. Yeah. And you know what, that's a good rap beat? Yeah it works. Uh that was what would Prince do with it? Make love to it all right, and then make love on it. Yeah, and then make love to it again. Okay, second time. I know what you do. He would write it. You write the beat? Yeah right, I like Jeff. I like Jeff's answer. Better write it. That was
a lot of fun. Ride it while he writes it. I just want to say, yeah, God, And then it was a lot of fun. Started delving in, dude, Corona Cross what no, no, no, no, no, not like just looking up story. They just ruined Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross like it it is. The story is in penetry, like if someone was to explain it to you, you you know you made that ship up, like that's not what they did to all the main
characters. And I just had always assumed because I knew, like, okay, Corona Cross is supposed to be like the follow up the Corona Trigger, but I was always under the assumption that or under the impression that it was like, yeah, like some minor characters from Corona Trigger are the focus and Corona Cross it is, so he doesn't really have anything to do with or
impact anything from Corona den know, definitely not true. Okay, it just makes like Corona was already sort of convoluted because it's sound travel, yeah a little bit, and then this just layers on way more, way more like this. Basically the story fought like so at the end of uh because we had Magus or Bagas at the end, and he's references a shalah as he's about to go off and track that down. That's basically the jumping off point
for Corona Cross. So there are like references to all the characters and you get some sort of it's it's a bunch of bullshit, like and the game had a great combat system too. Actually, oddly enough, you know, given the talking about Final Fantasy thirteen, like Cronacross had a great, really fast combat system, but just they had like forty five characters in that game too. I remember that. That was what I remember was like it had an insane number of it's almost like a half sweak at it, Yeah,
gosh sweak aten Uh. Well, I wanted to bring up the credic trigger thing and say that we had a ton of fun doing that. Yeah, really enjoyed it. And it's still there on the site, and so if you haven't watched that, you can start from the beginning and relive the magic for the first time. Indeed, and I just wanted to clear the air that that there will not be another Dirt's Run anytime soon. And I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm for it, but don't ask. I know it happens every time.
Yeah, that was the thing that I realized as you guys were coming out of the room. Yeah, it's like, oh, because I saw someone immediately go like, what's next? Like fuck. Well, it starts off with the with the folks who are like kind of like there's a little bit of joking, a little light joking, like you guys just went through this, what's the next one? But it's not long before we're like no, it's like, seriously, what's the next one? I need another one
of these. Because as much as as we had become used to come in and recording it. I think a lot of people also found a comfort in the daily thing every day, and every day they'd come in and have a half hour to just just waste and Superman for the twenty say possible. I kind of wish we'd announcing that's all. You're saying, you're prepared to announce the next one. Yeah, I'm pleased to announce that Patrick and Ryan will be playing Superman for the tent. But if we had done the super Metroid
thing, I don't. I almost wanted to cut that out now so that that doesn't even that seat doesn't even get fucking planted in anyone's minds. But it wasn't. It was only just to drive everyone fucking insane. That's true, That's just not. The intent was not to actually play super Metroid.
All right, Well, I guess I guess with that context. So yeah, one of the ideas was after the end of the the once we reached credits on the Chronic Trigger and Durance run, which we didn't which we partally didn't do this because didn't really think it out, but also that and kind of ran along. Yeah, the idea was we would immediately put in Super Metroid, which I've never played. And if people think that, they go crazy watching me play fucking Crona Trigger. Hold on your goddamn hats, trying
to watch me play fucking super Metroid. How much that would just drive everyone completely bananas. But we're not gonna do No, we did not do that. We're not going to do that. But it was funny. It was funny to think about either way. Yeah, Crona Trigger Great Games Classic. Turns out that I just want to check out the DS region now because it had a totally different translation. Yeah, but UZI Punch is not us as far as I like Mega Punch. They took out because of the gun reference.
Did you go see the Ted Woolsey has a panel at GDC. I'm gonna go. You should go front Row heckle him messed up. Bromused to read broad lines. That's right. We did spend a fair amount of time kind of breaking down certain elements of the translation. I mean, the story was that he barely had any time to do it right, and basically a rom hack. Yeah, it's not just that, it was you were, like, you're fitting English text into the original space that was allotted for the
Japanese, which totally Yeah. Yeah, they're all just a crazy compromises made in the nineties to get those. It was, I mean, it was like I think main like, it is a pretty well written game. I think generally speaking, there's just certain choices of how dialects, how dialects are are shown in texts, Like Okay, we get it. This guy is supposed to have a proper like English accent, but you don't have to put just all of this antique language in every single fucking sentence, specially because come
across, wasn't nobody else from that time period to talk that way. Furthermore, he doesn't talk that way before he becomes a fucking frog. Yeah, but it was like this, it's the thing. It was like, this becomes this weird affectation for this dude when he becomes a frog. If you turned into a frog, it would probably change a lot of shit about your
life. I guess. So you make good points, true, Ted, I redact that previous critique considering where video Okay, then just the caveman all talking in you know me, no, like bullshit, It's like that's just it's growing to read. Considering where your translations and video games had been previously that stuff is okay at the time. Yeah, standards coming from like I feel asleep. You're probably totally right, You're well, this is it was
like a revelation before you're playing. It was ninety five ninety five, which whatever. There have been horrible translations beyond ninety five. I mean, yeah, Final Fantasy seven has a notoriously awful translation. Yeah, so so it's it can it can still happen regardless of the time of it, and I'm sure that if I had seen it then my standards would have been a lot different. But it's also just a really good story, so it survives any
sorts of translation it comes. It does. You're right, though it does get convoluted. It's back when saving the world meant something. Yeah, feathered hair, it's still cool. Dude, still didn't talk though, Yeah, it's the original sign would protagonist? I think about that they remade Corona trigger all with the sea and the more art. Oh god, would you rather have all a crritoryama art? I mean, it's talk about that. You want to you want to talk about the same guy over and over. I
mean, have you seen the three D Dragon Quest games? Have you seen what a curritoryama art looks like in three D. He probably doesn't even do any of that stuff. That's what his stuff. Yeah, he hasn't done it for twenty years. Probably back to Jeff sent did you all Gears of Wars? Dudes? Exactly? Two giant shoulder pads running through time saving the world. All right, everything's been done, packing up the more video games. Video games are over. There's nothing else. If I played some Gears
of War this weekend, it's travel through time. I don't believe so missed opportunity? Which one did you play? I watched dudes die though? So three? Okay, so I've finished it. If you were to play that feels you could. Are you did? You had traveled through time? Yeah? But I didn't. I haven't finished the game first, Before I get to that part, I don't have any thoughts on Here's War three still, there's some story stuff about it that I still feel a little weird getting into
fair enough, because you know, it's big events in that game. I guess, uh. I played a little bit of that. I went through the Saints Row Gank You Bowl DLCI which yeah, which, yeah, I mean what you guys said last week. I think it was. It was very spot on about like what the actual contents of that of that DLC were.
But I was still so fucking thrilled to have any excuse to go back into that game that I then ended up like spending another four hours, like running around getting all of the collect like doing the mop up ship that I hadn't done before that I had already said like I'm not ever gonna do that. I'm like, well, ever, I got the game in and I blew through this stuff. Let's let's go, let's go and do some other some other dumb shit in here. So like just as as a reason to
throw stans for the third back into my three sixty, I was. I was happy to have that UC panel coming for that too. Yeah that sounds great. I really want to hear showing like like they got cut showing like previous footage and talking about cut features. Yeah, I'd love to see previous stuff. I'd love to hear about like at what point, like where were they in the design process when they decided like like no, this is this
is how far we're gonna take it. If that was a thing that was like at the very beginning, or if they were just kind of like doing stuff, and the designs were like, well, what if we make this crazy? What if we do this? And like this found themselves liking it more and more as they got more weird with it. If those rickshaws explode when you shoot them, yeah, which which I still I'd love to hear about that, because I that just sounds like a producer solving a problem.
Yeah. I like, okay, well, we don't really have a budgets like time to animate these things blast apart, and so you're using the system Yeah, yeah, control these things. We've already kind of cobbled this thing together. What we do side effect blow up and that'll be way funny, Like you're right, that would be alright, good done. I figured that they were just like, all right, original prototype for this sequence. Well, we haven't built anything for the rick shaws yet, so we're just using
the car physics underneath. Like oh sure, sure. I just just sort of like, all right, we're early on this. It happened, it's like, well, obviously we're gonna get rid of the explosion like nos explosions hysterical leave that in. But either either way, it definitely seemed like a thing of of of necessity than anything else. But I'd love to hear it, right, you're gonna say something else. Oh that's it, so, yes, here's war and that I'm not quarrel for a second. Yeah,
what's up my profound disappointment with quarrel? What's what? What? What's up? For? As much as I want to like it, what is it
that's disappointing about everything? For you? Every aspect of it is so fucking unpleasant to deal with, just the amount of like basically the cheating that goes on on both sides, Like how it is apparently basically unplayable online now, oh, because everyone everybody just sits there with an anagram website open, typing all the letters the words with friends and then and the AI similarly, like yeah, it's the AI, right of course, Like the idea that if
you come up with the same word, it's whoever came up with it first wins, and one of them is the computer is always the one that's gonna come up with because you'll see you'll see the computer file. It's choice, yea. At some point. Yeah, they do kind of just randomize, you know, and there are levels to like to the AI intelligence and that
seems to pretty correct. Yeah, it's still super weird construct But like I was reading like comments on the quick Look, we're saying that that Domination mode, which is basically like the story mode, is basically unbeatable because the AI gets so good by the end that you just cannot like it'll get the letter
word on every single thing that it does. And yeah, it's just like I kept having the computer, like I would go up against it was like five to two or whatever, and they would pull my like every time, which is nine point. It's like, yeah, of course you had my in there and beat my five letter word. Just I don't know, it didn't seem very balanced at all to me. I always the concept of the game is fantastic. That's why I was kind of I was kind of a
little bummed about it. That's why I always just looked to the highest value letters first, because I know you want to get those. You want to if there's a Y or a J or something like that. Que I was just pausing the game and using the Internet to look upwards and beating the computer that way. Why we don't play Words with Friends? Oh yeah, yeah, I don't play Words and Friends with them terrible person to play words with
friends with. Yeah, I'm really good at it though totally all to that same end though, like it's it seems like it's and I think also, you know, in a weirdly sort of similar way apples to apples. It's like it's who you play with that that is what it comes down to. But I still love the concept of for for quarrel. Yeah, it's it's a fantastic idea of mixing a boggle scrabble idea with risk and uh and I think like those parts doing it really well. But I have heard enough people
Will Smith was bellyaching about the iOS Ai for months and months. I was like, oh, I don't see what you're talking about. But apparently that is still an issue. So do you see the thing the Xbox Live word filter that's screwing up that game? What's up? So there are certain words that are just through Xbox Live, like you can't use them in any sort of input context. Uh, like gods is one of them? Or god? Uh? There there's like balls that you can't use, Like there's certain
ones that you can see how this would into a word filter. So apparently connect money ball if you turn off family settings, and then when you play a single player you can use all those words. The game doesn't filter them, but the moment you go online, family settings is defaulted like cast. That's part of the way this filter works is like that filter is a choice
offline, but is mandatory online. So like words like balls and gods, which can have negative connotations but are totally appropriate words that you could use in this uh can not be used, but the game doesn't, like it just
won't let you use the word. But it's not anywhere explicit that like, you shouldn't be able to use these words, and the developer couldn't get Microsoft to disclose the words so that they get at least so you see that from Microsoft send where they're like they don't want to disclose all of their filter words. Yeah, but the developers like, how do I know what words to
noting there there? It's a word based game, and Microsoft wouldn't disclose the words, so you just it's basically the community is having to figure out which words are part of the filter, so you don't use those words. I think dice like dic is also a word that like whatever reason won't won't go
through. I played quim in quarrel. So that's there's no filter. Oh okay, it's using a standard dictionary that there are just then a filter on top of that Microsoft employees and play the only one you play it online? Okay, but if you play. Yeah, And so I don't know. Microsoft said they're getting back to me about it. So maybe I'll have an answer by the time this goes up. But I my email to see if they've gotten back toight. But no dice, But very good. That leave
that on the table. Nothing else to be done. Speak, go wait, do it. I don't have anything. Oh you fucker come on. You can't just bust out and Dice is next week? Yeah? Fun had a choice there, Uh, Jeffer Patrick, you'll be going to dice, that's the idea in theory. Yeah. Maybe, And if you do, I won't know until you come back. So yeah, nope, when we come back, it'd be like, what happened? Dude? You don't want to know? Actually you don't. And that's the based on how Dice usually
goes. No. I did my first and probably last in a while dice last year, and I love it was a ton of fun. You learned a lot the words were great, met a lot of people, learned a lot. Absolutely, It's the most casual events of the year. Yeah, usually pretty fun. Yeah, work. Sure. He got to see Mark sur you talk. Yeah, see Richard Garriott talk about going to fucking space. Right. I haven't seen Mark documentaries coming out. Really does he does. I saw a trailer for it is not yet, No. I thought
people said it was on Netflix. Maybe maybe, I don't know. I think it was at Okay. Oh, yeah, you're right, You're right, because I saw pictures of him like at a premiere or something. But yeah, he just basically got up on stage and like talked all about his fucking ship, his space ship moon and can go to the moon, uh, his space travels. And then he end said yeah, and then we're gonna send everyone to space peace. It was awesome. Got Richard Garriott,
I want to go to space. You and John Karmack gonna take me to space. I think that was with how that ended, right, It was like it was like, pretty much, I'm talking to John Karmack, just send y'all space peace. Every Yeah, fucking dropped the mic and took off rocket left with two thin little rest That's how the movie ends. Yes, his red tails get into their own personal rocket. God. I think it's like the one, doesn't it it's too really yeah, it was at least
at Dice it had multiple I wouldn't give for just one rat tail. Motherfucker's got to flaunting it. It's been too space. Yeah, he created Ultimo, has two rat takes another rat tails castle. It's a space rat tail building castle at all. Yeah, it's like dark Phoenix. You know it's gonna come alive. And did he blow all of his money on that or
the castle? The trip? So the said during Dice was like like yeah, at this point basically just you know, game development is funding me going to space, and once I ran out of money, got to go make another game so I can get the space. That's it. I love that, you know, single minded determination. There's something too. Yeah, that man's Tabby Ross going strong now social ever he went space. Yeah, so just will always always have a leg up in any argument space. Did he
was it? Was he just high orbit or was he space space? A space station? Probably lower orbits? Yeah, okay, what's this agenda? What's he doing up there? His dad wasn't NASA? Do you need something other than just I want to go to space. I want to go to space. What do you want to do up there? Be in space? I want to do a giant laser. There you go? Is that it's not allowed into space. I want to pioneer program by which we launch all
our garbage directly into the sun. And why won't Why don't we do that? It's probably too expensive, right, because but what happens when the first rocket explodes and garbage goes everywhere? It goes into the sun. Right, I'll just keep it in the sun like whatevers in the air, blows up and disposable rockets that we can get into order. Well, that's what out of Earth's atmosphere pointed directly at the Sun. No more dumps, no more
landfills. This is my platform launch garbage into the sun, Brad. This is why you launched out of Florida, so that if it explodes, no harm. Look like Florida to wash whatever. Should know it's easy or the closer to podcast Florida we're talking about, Prince gets his propers. Here's to
achieve escape velocity the closer to the equator. That's why we watched from Florida and Texas because I also watched from Earth, which if you haven't seen it, that's really good because burn up when before it even gets the sun, it won't even get close exactly, just burn up all the Some environmentalist being like, what if it lands on an alien planet and then weird dicks welling
atmosphere? Maybe well, we don't know anything about the atmosphere. The environments will be more peeved about the rocket fuel birds to get this garbage in a space what's better though, burning some rocket fuel or filling the planet with junk? What dolphins choking on? Six pack ring or some rocket fuels? This way to plug that? Everyone? Every eagles six still a very serious problem.
Not everyone cuts their fucking six pack. How many fucking so it is, come in six packs with the rings on them, still sell them all over the place. What are you talking about? You can six They would come in cardboard, go to a seven to eleven and buy a six pack of beer. They sell it like a six pack of beer, do they? Yeah? I thought they like rings? Yeah, still the same ship I saw it was like they had they started like shrink wrapping them into some
of that. Yeah, there's some of that. There's three pack of tall cans of Budweiser. Yeah, you're right, those were totally right. Rings are made out of cord. At this point, it might be yeah, everything's made of corn. Yeah, all this is why we need a space elevator. I would I would, you know what? Rocket would be more fun because I would accept a space elevator. You say, a space elevator to the space station. Then you just go outside and chuck rowing it.
So it's good to make it. Take this SPF fuck you. I like the idea of throwing garbage at the sun from the space I wasn't like the idea of like a million dollars, a million dollars trip to just hurrow the styrofoam cup at the sun and then go back down. Done, take a picture. All right, let's go back down. I think I've done. That's it. That's all. That's all I can bring with me. Was
that one piece of garbage TASA two. That was maybe not the most effective using everybody's time of the mass this time, it's not better build the misterfusion. Yeah, that's the only solution. Two options, throw the garbage into space or build misterfusion. These are the two projects. I was fun. The only two plus the only two projects, and once one of them is successful, you're shutting down the other. Yeah, so there's a little competition.
Yes, so it's like, hey, get your ship together, exact projects, because we will ask your ass The mister fusion would get us to space on its own, I think, well, then you could just power the rockets. By then you're using the garbage to burn his fuel. Then then why I even send the rocket exactly? We didn't think. I'm saying that you're taking people into space because whatever. And then you're throwing people at
the sun because they're prisoners. There's way too many of that because everyone that's the other part of my project, more prisons. Man, I'm not I'm sending my endorsement. Are you a criminal or you're afraid you might get launched into the sun for being a murderer or a raper? Because those the sorts of people that deserve to get launched in No, because I want to see
more Kevin Bacon movies. Alright, he's got burning up in orbit, cralling him into the suns because you think he did some bad stuff because you saw Sleepers on HBO. I did horrible stuff to the space station. The space catapults take him to the murder sling shots very direct to the point. Name. Yeah, well you don't want to misunderstand. You don't want to make it sound like a cool thing, like, oh, space sling shot, let's go, I want to go up there. Like no, it's like
how in my mind spaceling shot. Everybody hopes he just made it to the sun. Can't see him anymore. He just just assume he made it to the sun. Well he's gonna or he'll make it to the sun eventually out of an unusual for to for you to not launch him with some oxygen so you can see it go down. I mean, how does that work? Like, what's the what's he's you want to get? Like and he sucked
into the vacuum space and killed? Or do you launch with the sun and let him burn up in a space suit so he's protected until he Jeff, here's the thing. The sun is super far away, right, I don't think he would survive just a like all right, like sub lights being strip it's the space sling shot will shoot you fast. You have to save that for your second term. Come on, come on, you gotta have you have some sort of carrot on that the second term is when it goes below
murderers, and there's just more undesirables, a lot of murderers. So this guy who ran against me in the election launch, Well, best of luck to you in your campaign, Jeff, thank you. We're doing quite well. And you know, I think of the children have fun at Dice. I guess it's the moral that's where's gonna announce this platform. Yeah, talk about this with some people. Yeah, get Garrett Karmack might have some real world you've been talking to John again, Jesus Christ. Murder sling shot.
It sounds like something Karmack could come up with. Just that sounds like something and read, Yeah that can that can be a weapon at murder sling shot and you launch it into the arena where they all do battle. I told you, Richard, it's a great idea. People act. See uh is like his chicken scratch. There's like a napkin that he's got his equation written
on about the murder sling shot. But it's actually just just like shot, a blow that says hell of fast line and then the other end the sun not even like a circle with like little line sticking off the sun texts, nothing more looking too showy. It's just kind of play. Oh. I played a little bit of Friday, Uh, maybe an hour or so of this Xbox lot of ArKade game that came out last week Canami Publishing called Puddle,
and it was I looked into it something. It was a twenty ten I GF winner, Yeah, student game, and uh, I yeah, played a bit of it on Friday. It's uh, it's kind of cool. I'm curious to see published by I know which is. You know it's gonna say it's opposed by Konami. But it's kind of cool. I know. That's why I said it. Okay, is this the game that's like there's the element mental. It's all fluid dynamics, Okay, or it's at
least what I've played mostly fluid dynamics. But it's basically it's the story of
this spilled cup of coffee. Like the game opens and like this black silhouette of a man in an office is poured himself a cup of coffee, puts the cup down, and then you become in control of the fluid inside of that cup of coffee, and so you're using like the left and right triggers to basically like slash it like left or right, and then that's your controls for the rest of the game is just tilting the momentum from one side to the other, and you like basically you get out of the coffee cup,
you hit the floor, you go through some drains, and you eventually get purified into just water, and then you go through like further sewer works and you're trying to avoid like it's basically each there's there's discrete levels, and each level requires you to get to the end with a certain amount of fluid intact, so you can lose You can lose fluid by like there are heat elements that if you run into them directly will burn up, or if if you
sit on other like warm elements for too long, your your water will evaporate. Roll over a sponge, Uh, there's there's sponges there, but there's like just like straight up holes that you can get lost in. The heat stuff seems like it is in those early levels kind of the main thing to look out for, but it has the feel of the fluid dynamics is good. It's all too deep so you don't have to worry about it. Spreading
out too crazy. Uh, but then it but then eventually it becomes other fluids, You become other chemicals that have other properties, and then you have to kind of use the use the material accordingly. Like you get the stuff that can be caustics. You can actually burn new paths at specific points to
to kind of keep your progress moving forward. Pretty cool. I guess just ten bucks, we're gonna do something on it video wise this week, so we'll have something for you to actually look at to put a face to the name. I guess, but I'd love to look at stuff. Uh but yeah, I kind of I kind of dug what I'd played of it. Definitely starting to get to the point of of like, well, okay, I screwed up this, you know, this jump or whatever, and so
I have to kind of restart the whole thing. It give me kind of harsh if you missed like a particularly Yeah, it's sort of like I just told the misjudge the times I've lost three fourths in my liquid. I really should just start over because there are and it has gimmes that that you can use. They're called they have a funny name for him. But definitely when it happens to me. I'm like, oh, I just want to I
want to start over. Uh. But there are times when it's like you have to be going at like full throttle to make it over an upcoming jump. But then there are other times where if you're going full throttle, you're just gonna eat it right into an obstacle of some kind. So some of it's like just trial and error based like that. But and it is definitely getting harder. I think I'm just getting into kind of the middle of the second area here, and it's, uh, it's it's getting a little tougher.
But I've liked what I played in it so far. What else I played some misspac Man? Okay, it's pretty good. Yeah. I decided this weekend that it's about communism. M m. So it's like a breadline or like what what's the four agents harassing the individual, trying to prevent them from consuming too much? All right, So they're trying to enforce the communist agenda, whereas Miss pac Man is just trying to do what she wants,
which is eat everything, just eat everything, including the agents. Yes, it's got some kind of randy it's probably something like that and they're if I had to, I had to guess. I did some furniture moving this weekend to make one of my the rooms in my house, the room where the Miss pac Man machine was living, more usable for things other than playing Miss pac Man. It's still great for playing Miss pac Man. In what is
to confirm, h well, had I had well? I also had a desk to keep your keys on or something that I had furniture in another room that had just been piling up. The thing about having a house, uh rooms, is that you then have rooms. So instead of like when you're an apartment and it's just like we can't have this thing, we don't have room for it, don't get it, or we have to get rid of
the other thing to replace with this thing. He could just be like, yeah, I bring in the new thing, old thing, I just throw in the garage. I'll take care of it later. Or I'd put in this other room. I'm not doing anything in there, and shit piles up. I've only been there a couple of years and shit piles up. Yeah, don't let that, don't let that get out of a hand. I'm
I'm trying. That's what this weekend was kind of about was was kind of trying to get out in front of that sum uh because you put a pac Man machine next to it. Done, that's right, I want to put it, have to put yeah, exactly. Un I had like a half a couch that was sitting in another room. It was like a sectional. Okay, chain saw this couch and half it just had this half a couch, I said, the front half. Yeah, it was seven down the side. Yeah. I got off to a real bad start when I moved
into my place because I didn't have a couch at all. Yeah, and I was in the process of getting a couch. I was like, okay, we need to go out and sit on some couches and and get a couch. In the meantime, my two idiot roommates decided, as they were walking up the street and saw a free couch, we're get this couch, that shitty white catch, shitty white couch. And now all of a sudden, it's just like, here's this couch that I don't want. There's couch
I don't need in your house in my house. Great. And then I went and got my real couch, which is pretty nice couch, I think, ye. And I'll tell your roommates got on it. Yeah, yeah, it's it's seemed better days. It's hard to clean that micro virus. It is, yeah, it is. What are you talking about? What happened on the caches? It's not even it's not even fabulous, it's not even. Yeah, came in and there was sex. It was just just like, no, just gross dudes being grossy, eating fucking taco bell on
it and not leaving for fucking twenty four hours at a time. Yeah, just like people sitting on that couch for just mung more days straight, just like watching Yeah, it has been duded hard, but the tags are still on it. What were you saying? Mung word like style, you know, rocking the hat with the tagst on. It's like that my couch,
though, Is there is there a nasal equivalent of onomotopia? Words that sound like what they are, words that like smell like what they Oh you're saying the sound like the factory is very mung smells bad, very evocative of what it is. I think that still counts like an old factory, sus. Anyway, I found some mung in my sink drain was a physical thing. Why are you pulling the mung out. Dude. Well, so I washed the mung down so it was stuck to the edge. So it was one
of those things where it had the stopper. You'll pull the thing up and then there's the gets that broke. So I yanked it out. So it's just an open drain, and there was something stuck to the side, like pretty high up, and I'm looking at going I can't even really tell what this is, but it doesn't look good. So I got something and just like chipped it out of there, and it was just black gunk. I don't know. I don't know hair from shaven or who knows. So it
wasn't like a little lever or something for the stopper. No, no, no, it was gunk. Oh God, some kind of something. So I chipped it all loose. Uh, And now I have a real slow drain, so pore some stuff. I gotta get some stuff to pour down it. Damn it, that's what I should have gotten. There was something I needed to get. Don't go to the sea. Don't go to the
CVS. You guys, don't ever go to the CVS. It's like the because any time that you go to the CVS, it will always seem weirdly empty, but the line will always take you way too long to get through. I don't know what this is. Universal truth about CVS is that two check stands open, two check stands open, and those people who were ill equipped to deal with a financial transaction. That's always who was at the front of the line at the CVS. Also, it's never someone who's like on
top of their ship. Yeah, they're always out of fucking starts on both sides of the register. Yeah, totally. So I was trying to buy some checks mix and it took four ups and now we're gonna get a budget emails from dudes who work at the CVS. Step it up, you guys, come on telling you how why it is. Maybe it'll explain. Yeah. I will say this though, that I find their their pharmacy people to be friendly and ineligible, so keep that part of their checks mix people were
not Yeah, no, the checks mix Steward not great. I had to buy some bitch makes some of the air the ambassador. I had to buy some band aids, so I cut my finger and then while I was there, I was like, oh, I'm gonna buy I'm gonna fill out my like first aid medicine cabinet. So wind up with like an armful of like gauze bandages and pads and sanitary this, and just going your bug out bag. What do you yeah half of it? You know, you never know.
Yeah, So he doesn't like people knowing about his bug out bag. Well, if they know, they they're gonna come get it, know that they're gonna find him. It does definitely doesn't say survival bag and big yellow letters tape over that. So anyway, roll up to the counter U and just dump like gauze bandages and stuff on the counter, like I had just robbed a bank and she was holding a bullet wound in and then mouthwash and they didn't blink an eye like it wasn't like did you hurt yourself or you
know, like this is every scene. Well here me, I see what Like the terminator has to walk in there because you know they're about to take a eyeball out. That's what you do. And but the reality of the situation is that the person at the counter at the CVS doesn't want to hear Yeah, and it's it's seemed way worse. Yeah, exactly, they've seen that situation except with someone who actually has an open, flowing, bad wound. You don't want these these are for light drainage, and is trying to
heavy food stand. Yeah, it was just like puss coming out of their face. It's like a weird You're not gonna be able to use this round fluid. I don't know. Here's the thing. They're not doctors. They're CVS checkers. I bet they know a lot, but they can't give you medical advice. They can't say this is not the thing you want. I would like that. I would like to know if I ever got if I robbed a bank and got shot and we're buying the wrong thing. The movie
was gonna end poorly in about twenty minutes. They would make it go at least one more act. No, because if they got it wrong then you'd come back and see them. It's a bit. That's a sequel. Yeah, it's a better movie. Shoot that person in the space. Yeah, it's a head person into the sun. Who would you like to see shot
into space? Give us a call I don't love. If you give a political donation to Jeff's platform, then you get to vote to choose exactly part of the chosen ones get to decide I also Founder's circle, we call it. So I got I got a great, uh fucking piece of furniture from for my girlfriend's grandma. That's the other half of the couch that's supposed to be a bar. It's got a little like leaves that fold out on the top. It's got some cool sixties like would work in the front, and
I'm using that as a TV stand. So I was able to get my my nest and my CDX hooked back up. So I played a little bit of Tangent Tetris. Nice. Uh, it's cool. Girlfriend is behind me playing Miss pac Man and just up a storm, just really just she no, not Miss pac Man. Wasn't where my girlfriend was? What ROMs you got fast Rom's curse ROMs? Nothing? Just great standard vanilla Miss pac Man. That that woman I've I've seen. I've watched a lot of people play
games. I've never seen anyone react as violent like I have to take her off the machine sometimes I have a second. You can't play anymore, Miss pac Man, because it's it's fucking you up, so you let the communists win. You're getting you're getting too upset at this machine. So she's behind me playing this pact man, and I'm playing a tangent Tetris which does not
have like classic Tetris music. It has its own set of crazy but still like really good music on it. So just all of this crazy music, all this crazy old video game music blaring in the room all at once. Probably a little uh game. You may have heard of it, Mike Tysons punch Out. No, what is that? Fucking Mike Tysons punch Out is great for as for as simple as it is for as like kind of nothing
as there is to the the gameplay. Like, looking at that game, I am still extremely impressed at the quality of the character work and the animations that they I mean, I realize again that there's kind of nothing else to that game, but it's really got like there's you look at games of that era, there's just nothing else that looks quite likely that thing to the utmost, it really does. It's it's damned impressive. You know you should do
to enhance your your game room kind of experience. Is there's a you can download it online. It's there's like Arcade Ambiance files that like dudes have put together MP three'es of like specific eras see eighty one eighty three? Can I get it on tape? You know, you could probably copy because because there's
only a tape player in that room, it's just just download it. It's like it's like ninety minutes because I don't want to like stuff repeating, right, yeah, three minutes and you can just you can just kind of loop some of that I was just playing, and then put the Enterprise Engine noise along with that, and then it's like having an arcade on the Holidack. Right man, did you still get that noise on the Holottack? Imagine I'd be real fucking well sure, but then you have to But here's the question.
If you want it, is it the actual ambient? No, the holiday just loads up that YouTube video? Is it then simulated for the sake of the Holidack holidics sound proved. It's a good question. Well, I mean, you didn't hear it in Sherwood Forest fair enough. So we need
to science fiction that is based on what has already happened. Is there there is there any of that that takes into account like where the Internet actually went, and and yeah, it's crazy stuff like the YouTube's and there's the way as crazy as the tubes of the world, the amazons of the world, like the way she has already gone kind of crazy, Like there is there
any science fiction written this informed it's too depressing to read? Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, I guess it's like, I don't know, Mi Alority Report seems just aside from the whole crazy precognition stuff, seems reasonably plausible. Is that super sad true love story? Just because you say they're like, oh yeah, oh no, well, I think I think you can
already kind of see it going bad now. Yeah, yeah, well, I think that's it's also hard to do that stuff right now because you're still in the thick of it for it to not just immediately seem horridly dated. Sure, I think that that can be tough with with sci fi. All right, let's take it to Newsky Patrick yep, So, uh Sundance Right, Sundance film festival that took place last last week. Uh. Front of the Sight. Phil Fish was featured in indie Game of the Movie, which
showed at Sundance. They won an editing award, won an editing award. Congratulations to those people, Brad, you and I are in it for a second. Oh hey, you know where a part where the truer boy stuff. I think Lemon Lemon is also in it. They're watching that's part of a lens of you playing uh, super meat Boy. I'm not sure how
I'm in it because I'm not in that video. So people were saying, no, I don't think I'm there that people were saying that anyway, as part of this there was maybe you could sort out what this all actually means, because there was word that basically this this movie had been optioned or was going to be turned into an HBO series, and then there was backlash because everyone thought that HBO series was going to turn into like a multi camera by
Yeah, uh it's Scott Rudin, who's the I think that's the producer's name, who's the producer of the Social Network and a bunch of other dude just gotten nominated for an Oscar. Really a lot of the basically the guy has attached to one of the best. Yeah, he's you know, like on par with like like a Frank Marshall, which has like in a absolutely like
exquisite track record. As a as a producer option to the remake rights to Indian the movie to turn it into a TV series an HBO and it was label the comedy, which is where everyone kind of flipped out and Phil Fish had uh what one might call a tantrum on Twitter. I imagine Phil Fish would probably call it is he is pretty since apologized. And the fear was it was the word comedy, and everyone's everyone thinks how geek culture is portrayed
in mainstream culture. Just immediately think about Grandma's Boy and just going yeah, oh god no. But as it turns out, the way HBO just categorizes things is just that they have like a drama department and everything else is in the comedy department. Comedy department was actually like the thirty minute department. Yes if it's if it's less than an hour long show. So it's just the
way they internalize things. So when Deadline broke it, while they just the filmmakers just coincidentally we're in a sundance screening, we're unable to do damage control because they thought the story was going to come out later and then Deadline published it had as a as a scoop. Everyone just kind of flipped out, and I think, yeah, it probably too much of a flipout. Even I was a little peeved, but it's you know, you worry like it
seems like this really good thing all of a sudden. I just think people need to be prepared anyway, because any sort of dramasation is going to have to take significant liberties with what the truth, what actually happened was for for drama's sake. Yeah, I wonder thinking about that. I was chatting with Ryan o'donald about have you seen showing at Sundance There will be screening at g DC and they're doing a screening down in Santa Cruz with Team Meet on March
second. I think it's the tickets just went on sale today. Uh, it's about how you even like the weird thing about like a television show, comedy or drama about game developments, like how do you portray the games? Right? Like because are you making fake games? Are you not showing the
games? And when Ryan and I were talking about it, the I don't see how you do it except to actually build those games and then release them at the end of the season or something like, or like prototypes like I don't have people working on something so it looks plausible like that's always the thing is Yeah, all that video games is represented on television always looks so fake and ridiculous in the pac Man for the twenty six hundred Noises. Yeah yeah,
which the Tim and Eric movie does to great effect. Good for them. Well, like in The Wrestler, Darren Aronofsky got like there's a wrestling game built in that they actually built out that game and has that's a playable game that was never released, but you could see how you could do something like that with this where it's like the television show parallels and then you you could release parts of the game for pre Blelue experience. And I just that
part seems a really weird and hard. That's probably the hardest parts portray. I don't know if that's just because I know how games are made, right, So I guess that not maybe people that don't know how games, but it's but it's, you know, it's the indie game side of it, which I think gives them more license because it seems like there are a million different ways that people approach that stuff, Like it's like that process has been
way more codified on the professional end. But that doesn't sound like what these guys have bought. Yeah, So Scott Rutten as a great track record. So it'll probably based on what I've read, it'll go to pilot. It won't be just because Scott Rudden is doing it that he like has that cloud. But yeah, that indigame. The movie got a ton of brad Bird was raving about it on Twitter. I saw that that was I said it
was his favorite thing. He saw it Sundance that day that day. Sure that's a significant qualifier because that it's on the tail the next day saying this movie was fucking amazing. Still yeah, no, no, no for to to get any sort of prospect because yeah, he's alright, said that he doesn't really understand video games, so which is too bad. Let's playing video games, brad Bird. So this this Neo Geo handheld, you gotta talked about it last week. It's not real. NCS says it's fake. They
put up an image that just said hoax. Yeah, thanks for the details, right, that's yeah. They haven't said anything besides that. Yeah, that's not useful. Who knows that thing? Sure as hell looks not real like a bootleg e China, Right, MP four looks like an MP four. It looks like that. You could play diffix videos and it has these built in emulator ROMs. It looks like a boot like iPod that I bought off eBay. Ties. Should find that thing? Tie was even bootleg?
Yeah you bootle and bootleg iPod. I just took that tie. It's with the good will like two months ago. Slap the iPod, idiot, Well what it's not an iPod? What is it? What's it called? Actually have a got my money back? I initiated some of my money. I initiated the return process and then forgot about god fucking PayPal. Yeah, so your your silk tie bootleg iPod nightmare is what I thought of when I first saw that thing because I had the original eighties color Apple logo on it.
Yeahmember that I did. I gotta find that thing. But it actually functions. It wasn't eight gig m P three players, right? Is that was? It's in my house. I should find it. I'd like to see you play an MP three on it, all right. I just remember even trying to like load it up or like get it to not crash. We should get will norm to review. It's a fee and task whatever. We're better than it. I be. It's pretty good. Yes, I think I could assure you it might have. It might have. It might have
been weird enough that it's like and native support for og vorbis files. Of course, Fuck you China. I don't believe in karma. But that's iPod nano recall that's ongoing. They have run out of the old nano to replace it with, so now they send you the newest nano for free. One of those old n Yes, I have, I have, I have a recall eligible nano. Which ones are the original? It's the very first nano with the silver back, totally have. It's even even then, it's only
a subset. You have to put your serial number in. It was like the battery expoding. It's a bad battery chemical issue. I should look into that because I've totally got one of those, so if less bad. No, not that, not that I need a fucking iPod nano. But you can wear like a watch you get, you can you can you can make or you can buy wristbands made specifically. Turn that thing into and then you can make it your watch, make it look like whatever watch face you want.
You're giving washing to the sun, my friend. Keep going to anybody that puts an eyepen it's a nice watch. I just step into my murder. Well, first get out of the space trampoline and it'll be a good time for everybody. And then follow the signs marked murder sling shot. The signs might say m period sling shot. Just go on that. Probably want to load it in a lot of songs. And you imagine if they put a camera on that thing and it turns into like the Dick Dick Tracy thing.
Yeah, I think you're gonna say the Dick Cheney thing would have been slightly different, but only slightly. I think that sounds super cool until you actually do it, and then I know I've seen it in action. It's like, wait, I still need headphones that plug into it? The headphones to your wrist. Yeah, that that's the part where you're like this you
once you have headphones that are like literally just plugged into your wrist. That's because if you can get away with it just being like we that's some kind of weird accessory that looks really dopey. And then oh, you're listening to music out of your because it doesn't it doesn't have so is it so like so like above the elbow. Then that's okay, yeah, the headphones. Do you put the step the workout strap on your forearm? That's okay?
Like where like where's the cutoff point for where it's? Okay? Elbow? So above the elbow? I can. I can strap my fucking iPod to my body. You could and plug it headphones into it and it won't be launched into the sun. No, maybe the moon, but yes, you could do that. Where do you put your your iPod when you run? I don't know. On the treadmill? Okay, yeah, I put mine. I put mine on my see Patrick's run outside, and like I can't put in my pocket because it'll bound out and has which is why I started
stress. Can plug headphones in your wrists? It doesn't worry you came with your arms. It's not I'm saying. It's a cable. Run the cable up the length of your your sleeve and if you're wearing that, yeah, okay, if you're wearing long sleeves, or if you've gaff taped the cable to your arms, kids have you're right gaff tape. That's gonna make me a lot cooler that that will negate the issues of iPod on my wrist. No, I won't get your Your logic sucks not saying that putting gaff tape.
We all know that someday gaff tape's gonna keep us all a lot. This might be how it probably already has. It's probably been near death scenarios. I wasn't even aware of that man good thing gaff tables holding those batteries, and we'd all be fucked. It's not when I'm stoked now I might be eligible for free iPod I had no idea. Yeah, it's exciting that one's been sitting in battery dead and draw off way too long, getting long
sleeve shirt. You're using that like last year, leaking or exploding. I don't know what the issue is. Honestly, I cannot confirm whether mine has exploded, but you're word that it might. That's all that matters now that I know. Now, I know this just panic and fear running through at all times. Right now, I just sweating a pull it together, pull it together. I have no no stress. Yeah, it's gone with Zinga. They're ripping people's games off and people are upset about it. Everybody's ribbing.
Everybody was Yeah, there was another game today that get so The first first one was Tiny Tower. Tiny Tower put out a if you're gonna explain how your game is, like this is they did the best possible way to explain if how your game is a rip offs. They just put out a jpeg that was just long image. It was just like here the dry comparisons of what Yeah, yeah, very aggressive. Yeah, it's Tiny Tower. It was made by nimble Bit. It was which is like three dudes,
three dudes. It was the iPhone game of the year, so this was really popular. It was extremely popular. Yeah yeah, Apple Night Yeah, and apparently made them a decent chunk of change. And it's also well respected because even though it uses a lot of the same sort of like addiction mechanics of like a lot of Facebook and social games, it doesn't require to like put in money and things like that, Like you can play the game proper without having to sort of like go down that that weird road. Yes,
they put out an image thing that your Facebook. The dream Heights, I think is the one is what Facebook's is called. Yeah, like congratulations, and it's like the thing is it's not you know, the sort of idea like running this hotel or tower is not new like that was in sim Tower, and uh, I guess that was up Tower. I've got you Tower on this iPad right now. But but it's it's very specific mechanics or like upgrade paths or amount of credits needed to do certain upgrades that it's like just
the design of just like how the floors are presenting. Yeah, interface stuff and and I mean, I guess it's what I've seen of this. I've never played Time Tower, and I have no interest in playing right dream sweet Uh this does seem like very direct. Yeah, but I but I believe
that there is a fairly fine line. I think there's a finer line than most people realize between the like the homage, the inspiration and the outright theft and iteration, you know, like the video games are inherently, just like a lot of other mediums, built on building upon what other people and if someone else had a good idea, it's like that was a good idea.
Let's incorporate that ship and it will make our game better. Like that active active reloading went on too appear another game that happens a lot of cover systems. Yeah, cover systems, you know, perks, you know, all that kind of stuff. Rhythm Games. Yes, Harmons copying their own game. Yeah, after copying Kanami's game, right, But yeah, that's that's
it's the rabbit hole of that is. It's ly because you know, you look at what's happening and like the technistry with like patents and basically like the companies just buying up dyeing companies to have their patents so that they can sub license these two other companies even necessarily make something, but just to hog tie anyone else. Yeah, so you look at that and like if you know, creative works get tied up and all that stuff, that's that goes down
to a real dark road. And and I know that, like Jeff was pointing out all the weird stuff, like what was like Miss pac Man was originally well yeah, there's that stuff, but then then I mean was it Casey Munchkin? Like Munchkin? There's the lawsuit about that stuff. I mean, you can go back through all the video gaming, yeah, exactly, like the Great Gianna Sisters basically being like a Super Mario rip off and becoming so popular in Europe that a lot of people saw that before they saw Super
Mario Brothers. So when Super Mario Brothers came along, They're like, what does this knockoff of Great Town, which which made you know, Nintendo's suit pretty reasonable. Yeah, these guys are fusion in the marketplace, that's what they call that. And and in arcades, you had a lot of situations where people were producing clone versions of existing games. And some of that was
just outright theft and but and sort of a different thing. But you ended up in cases where they were like bootlegging Donkey Kong ROMs and hacking it to stay Crazy Kong and putting it out, and you'd have people that only knew it by Crazy Kong because that just happened to be the machine their arcade had. You had games, you know, uh, people just like producing their
own versions of games that didn't legally exist on a platform. You know, just like someone going like well, you know, changing Bitch, yeah or yeah like that. Or you know, there's probably like one hundred different versions of pac Man for the Spectrum or something like that that was just getting made
by different people or you know, all of them unofficial. That's maybe I'm exaggerating a bit there, but you get the basic idea is that that's sort of like Jeff Minter like his whole early career was was taking taking existing games, taking Empire Strikes back for the twenty six hundred, replacing the ad Ass with Lamas and going to here you go, or taking Robotron and replacing it
with Llamas and saying, Okay, here you go. Uh yeah, it's a really weird like I just don't know where you draw the line on that. But that was also a much more wild West time. It was in the industry. The groups that we're doing this were like a jeff mentor like GCC, the guys who originally were working on Miss pac Man. It was
like two dudes, was like a couple of a couple of dudes. I think that I think more than I think that that the the theft thing and the severity of the theft in the situation is giving people a good catalyst. But I think every everyone is lining up to want to nail Zinga to the
walls over anything. That is the core of the story for most people is the visceral satisfaction of seeing Zinga, the big, seemingly unscrupulous company, getting ricked over the coals for this, which which which I appreciate and it's fine, and I don't mind, you know, seeing them get their licks for this, because it does seem pretty pretty gross, pretty egregious. But I just I hope people are able to separate those concepts in their minds. Yeah,
because otherwise it you know, that's that's troublesome potentially. Yeah, when you can start, Yeah, when you can start like pattenting or getting the I mean like, doesn't Namco own the rights to video games playable during load screens? Yeah, and certain times they don't even do that certain types of
fighting game training mode stuff. Yeah, well he an Internet owns the I don't know if it's the pattern or trademark or what it is for a plus style deepad right, Yeah, that's why you've never seen that on any other control. Every other controller is technically not a deep path. That's why I like the PlayStation has that weird design. Icebox has the round one. If you're not intended, you do not get the cross. But Jesus, yeah, but that's you know, that's why training modes in a lot of fighting
games are not very good. I guess because Namco has something that they shut people out. I'm pattent so so yeah, there's a great case where you're where you're we're patenting that technology is yeah, hindering the market. Yeah, on the unless the companies work out some sort of sub licensing agreement. But uh, like you know, Harmonics paid Konami for for and then as a result of a later lawsuit, and then Harmonics gets a taste whenever someone makes
that three D note path. Yeah, the highway. The highway is something that they patented. So for all the Guitar Hero games, Activision had a PAM. Isn't the yell to activate star Power? And they're patting on that too. I don't know. But basically a Harmonics is a bunch of rip off artists. Screw those guys. So we're taking out Zinga and Harmonics. Yeah, it's pretty much the two biggest names in the industry right now.
We're just gonna tear them down. Well, Harmocks think is a weird case since they they make a guitar Hero and then went on to make Rock It's I agree, I agree, And I used that as as an example mostly just to kind of poke at the people I know it at Harmonics. But uh, and it is more complicated because of there's an issue, there's a there's a schism there between creator and like copyright owner. Yeah, and and
I think that's where where it becomes more complex for them. But yeah, they it's kind of but there's a there's a bit of a difference of iterating and adding a little something to the mix and just totally whole cloth the just and then the we changed this five percent and put it back out on this other plant more social functions, and like, legally you might be able to do whatever you want, but it doesn't mean you're not going to take a
couple of licks for it. Plants Versus Mummies, I don't know. Is that a game? It is? Now? All right? If you're not interested, I got someplace you can go. Hey, I'm working on this new game called Pants Versus Mummies. Is anyone interested? I'm fielding offers for I'll sell it for fifteen dollars. How could you throw that skull? Skulls? Nonegotiable? I'm working on Skulls us were Wolves if you guys are interested. It's sponsored by Nancroids, yeats by dan ackroid in app purchasing, Slash
Vodka Works, Vodica, show up your house. It's a match three puzzle game. You match the skulls to fight the were wolves. Guys, I have just rhymes. I have just patented the ability to yell skulls at your iPad and then vodka shows up your house. I am working on all new technology. If you pour vodka on your iPhone, more will show up. It's like, though you take the last drips to your vodka, just pour it on there it to text that this is the bottom of a bottle mostly
backwash, fucking vodka. Sacrifice, get a little, get a lot, exactly. Yes, it's a little easier than this yelling thing might be on some of that. All right thing, great the yelling thing. Don't worry about the yelling thing. The guy that made that's getting launched into the sunsets. So yeah, I wouldn't put any money on that one here from me, and I didn't need some more vodka for that poor a little out right. And Samiak has said that they're done making resistance games like that last one,
that third one, that was the last one we're gonna make. Sony's probably gonna make more of these are but we're not gonna make any more of these. Yeah, yeah, they get the this is three end I beat I. Well, you played that too, and it ends. I don't think it ends well, but it certainly ends. Yeah, they it's a
small it's a self continued little story. I feel like it's like that was a series that, like obviously Sony had grand ambitions for it, kicking off the PS three launch with it, and it seemed like there was some some cool stuff about it. I just I feel like that series never got its
footing and it never reached its full potential. Like it's still like the idea of aliens invading during a World War two setting is still it's awesome, sounds amazing, it sounds incredible, like it's a great it's a great start, but they're their fiction and their mythology went real weird too soon. It got
Yeah, it got real deep, real fast. And our two, you know, and and Kills one two got the line share of the interest you know, from from the public, and you know, people reacted to that first fake ass trailer of Kills Owe two and that's all you want want to talk about when it came to first person shooters on the playstage and three, so you know, resistance kind of got iced out as part of that too.
But also I don't think resistance too was a good game, and you know that that's certainly didn't I don't think Resistance one was a fantastic game either, but it had some really cool ideas. But I mean, I don't think people should be shocked by this. I think they've handled it really well.
I think I think Insomniac has done done a good job of like I guess it got out there as part of some interview, but then there's like a there's a video of Ted Price sitting on a couch saying like, hey, look, you know, thanks for coming along with us on the ride. But you know, we've we've we've decided or you know that we're not making any further Resistance games. Maybe Sony will whatever, you know, and
and we hope you'll play Overstrike Overstrech. Yeah, yeah, I think that's it's it was a it's a good idea for them to kind of put something out themselves and kind of putting it out then in their own words, and it's like here's here's what's going on. He's I'm more if they if they drop Ratchet Clank right, Yeah, I'm curious to see if Sony actually does pursue Resistance beyond, like the it's I don't think there's enough for reverence for
that franchise. Also, the third one didn't sell that well. No, yeah, I mean, you know, maybe you could transition it to a portable franchise if it finds some footing there, But I don't know. I don't know that. I don't know that we'll see any Resistance games past this one that's that's coming. Yeah, And basically they never they were never able to successfully like put a face to that franchise. The main character wasn't that you know, but they just rotated. But he's the same in the first
one and second one and then it was different. But it's basically just like the face of the Chimera was the Yeah, never really into the an alien design, but that was as as close as they had to, like some sort of consistent visual to sell the game with. Yeah, like you think to you know, you think, oh, call of Duty, will they always have never the same dudes in those games? Well, it was never
about the dudes. It's about ship blowing up. It even kills him, which I'm not a particularly a big fan of the franchise is like, but it's very iconic, Like the look of it is vivid and sharp like that. I think of those glowing eyes whenever I heat, like you know, like the yeah, the hell gas soldier like that. That whole outfit looks awesome. I think they also just took too long with the fiction for a payoff, Like you never figured out why the hell they were here. It's
been three games, What the hell you're doing? That's all. It's all and again It's what I always had a problem with that franchise, especially in R two and in R three, is it's all buried in notes like you gotta go dig in for the stuff that I'm playing the game for, and it's it's one thing, the high thing, like tidbits away for fans. It's another to obfuscate that to the point where you feel like it's worked to understand why you're playing this game. Apparently some of that shit's been going on
with Assassin's Creed. I guess like there was a comic or emotion comic or some bullshit that like basically explains the end of Etco's life. Stuff that should have fucking been in like the last game that he was going to be in, but you have some CG movie thing. I guess but yeah, I'm don't don't hide like big important story beats in your trans media bullshit. Speaking
of video game fiction, Yeah, did you guys see this? There's been a bit of an uproar of the latest Mass Effect book depends on a bunch of spoilers. No, it's uh, they've got a bunch of stuff wrong about the fiction of that universe. Shit that whoever, Like just like way characters are addressed, like you know, clan names being used instead of it's all right, pretty nitpicky stuff, but stuff that you would expect an author working on a book to get right. There's like a Google doc just like
here's like ninety things wrong with this book. And it's like, Okay, this person says that they've never been to this place before, but in this previous book they totally were. And this is the follow up to that book. What's going on? It's like, it's kind of ridiculous because it is packing a part of book based on a video game, which I don't really hold in high regard anyway, but it seems it seems like the people that worked on it might not have held it in a specially high regard either.
The amount of food that has been circulating with regard to Mass Effects. Yeah, it does not paint at you're very rosy picture to stuff like that. And I think people are going too far whether it. You know, there's always stuff like the script leaked or whatever out of that beta or something, and people are picking parts out of that and presenting them, uh, brazen ly like a bunch of assholes. Maybe I don't want all of this ruined
for me just yet. Yeah, but I don't know. It's it's hard to pick that stuff out, like without any sort of context and and and make a determination one way or the other about the final game. So yeah, because I'm still holding out how hope about that stuff? But yeah, when you read some of that stuff, when you just you get sent the two lines of here's what happens in this game or here's the specific nature of how this character develops, you can shake your head and go, what the
fuck is they? What are they doing over there? Some of that stuff sounds pretty crazy. I like crazy, but I don't. I don't as Effect is not the venue for crazy. I want to I want to play Mass Effect three. I've managed to not read any of this. I haven't seen it. Yeah, I keep I keep getting a bunch of it for
crazy. Yeah. Yeah, have too many ways that people can send me things, things that without the greater context of actually playing the game, Like I Yeah, I don't put that much stock in Yeah, a script or a you know, non canonical book that was written by some other dude. Yeah, it's just I just found it kind of funny that this book is apparently just full of utter nonsense, which of course it would be. Yeah,
it's a book based on video game I want. I want film grain and horizontal lens flares and squabbling, political arguments between aliens and the right trigger, talking to guys through the right trigger, dialogue trees, and a bunch of fake Vangelis. That's mass effect, Jennifer. Maybe you shoot some guys. Okay, I'd play that game. Yeah that sounds all right. They made that game. It's pretty good, and I just want to play as
a Silarium. It's a nice dream. That's that's what's so crazy. The multiplayer is for you, then, I guess that's what Jeff I'm not telling you is that you basically you go into a shop and you you change gender and race into a slarium. Have you have your mind transferred the body of a slim Pretty crazy. That's they're pretty cool. Alright, let's talk about the new releases. Forget that. I've got a breaking news. Hold on, I just checked. I just looked at my phone. No, it's
not breaking. I've got to interrupt this broadcast with a special announcement subject of email pre order cancelation notice colon Skylanders Adventure Pack. Dear Jeff, thank you for pre ordering one or more Skylanders Adventure Packs from Walmart dot com. Unfortunately, due to an industry shortage, we will not be able to fulfill any pre orders for the items listed below. We may receive interested to worry at some point in the near future, possibly February of March, but because we
cannot guarantee a day, we have canceled this item from your order. That item the Skylanders Adventure Pack Empire of Ice. Wow, I thought you were had one. This I do because activision set one. Oh man, you're a part of this industry shortage. Yeah, your industry. Uh thanks industry insiders. Now some poor little kid gets no Skylader. I'm that poor little
kid. Look at this email because you have one. Yeah, and now I'm not going to get this one for a little For a little while there, I was thinking about just letting this order slide and then I'll have two and I can sell dollars. You totally, we're gonna buy that second one. It was more than like that. I was too lazy to figure out how to cancel an order on Walmart. But but from this, this stuff
has gotten out of control. I knew what was going to happen though, Remember so I said, buy me some and just put it just just by the size end of the sophistication of their in store presence. I'm like, this is bad news. This it is too well thought out. And like two more single figures were released, I guess sometime in January. You know when I knew it was the second time that we went back and it was like it was like visibly it was the next day and it was visibly barren.
I'm like, oh no, they sold this was like the week after it came out and stuff, and it was already like this is just sold a lot of these. Well, the one thing we didn't talk about it in news was that we used controller having NFC in it. Now, what is NFC. It's the portal of power National Football comp like it's your field communication. Yeah, okay, it's based it's the micro check. I mean it's do isn't it basically like r F I D stuff smith when you need
it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so that's going to be built into that we use. So if you think about that with Pokemon and yeahs off the shelf, Skyland just probably wouldn't work with that if they're going with like the pure NFC spec because I think it is the kind of it's a slight twist on that technology, but yeah, it's totally it's an I triple E
mandate. I don't I don't know for sure, but like they do some I was reading about some of the NFC like games they have in Japan, like some of the Arcade stuff, because that's really big in Japan, is buying these card packs and like like NFC tech I guess is like where it detected like in emotions, so like you can be like moving your armies along
on the NFC like reflected up on screen. It sounds really cool. Well it's yeah, looking at it, it's it's unfathomable because it's all in Japanese and right, super complicated, but that's a big thing over but yeah, like the Android phone, like you know, hold phone near thing to pay
for Starbucks. Like that's all NFC and that's all. And then they've talked about how like all the they want to do payment system stuff on the WUS, so like theoretically, if you you know, rather than like having to like if they want to stick to not saving your credit card information, it may be solved by like if you have a credit card with an NFC chip, it just deducts it right out of the cards. Just kind of neat. But I have to imagine that though they will ship a Pokemon product that
takes manage of that stuff. It's crazy if they don't better. I had a Nintendo feels about the WU right now, and they're basic state in the industry. The rumors, I mean whatever, it's all just nonsense rumors and all stuff. But like people don't The only people talking about the U right now are people just like speculating about like they got to change all this stuff.
It's like I heard an eat three. Everything's going to be different, right down to the name and and just that like the kind of public message boards. This is the sort of stuff that they're getting into just says to me that there's just not a ton of confidence out there if this is where people are going with their with their weird ass patently ridiculous rumors. Yeah, we're so early with it. Yeah, but they had so little the show.
But I feel like that's kind of the case. Every time stuff was like a good proof proof of concept of what that thing was capable of. Sure, I mean, yeah, they didn't have a ton of show in terms of like package games, but like almost many games were like it was a it was a good like you look the hardware, You're like, oh, this totally works. I agree with you. I am putting myself in the shoes of the naysayers. Yeah, but that you're referring to you're playing
the Devil's Advocate, aren't you. Well, I think people look a little People like to put on their their packed or hats, and it's it's getting a little too bogged down in pats and wear hats. But you it's just that beautiful head of hair. Yeah, well into a hat. It's nice silvery wigs just at the temples. But I'm how I make my millions. I heard PlayStation four is gonna be more powerful than how many times. That's all I care about. I just care about how many times, like four
times heard the Xbox set of twenty is gonna be five times? Five times? Which platforms is gonna let me age my content in a digital locker and interact with the cell chips in my microwave and refrigerator. PlayStation three, PlayStation three done? No more platforms. PlayStation three computer entertainment system. That's right. It's gonna runs Linux. It does whatever you want. It's computer. It doesn't run LINX anymore. You don't run linus anymore. All Right?
Your released we're on PlayStation three is into the Sun? Who's with the Vanasy thirteen two is out on PlayStation three, Xbox three sixty both. Are there compression issues with any video? Staff videos? Video looks better? Uh? You definitely get some? Is it? Macroblocking is the term? I don't know, the big, big fat square compression art effects. That's call it macroblock. You know what I'm talking about? Yeah, yeah, definitely.
In some of the busier scenes you see a little bit of that. Some of the FMV, some of the pre rendered video in Gears War three could look better. Yeah, some of that doesn't look great. You're right, like you can tell like the original assets, like, oh they this was probably really impressive in its original and compressied form. It's gotta it's gotta just be a space consideration. Yeah, it's better on the three, doesn't at all. Yeah it cg and final Ze thirteen was pristine, like it looked
amazing on the p S three. Yeah, but yeah, that's what blue ray gets you. He's saying a little smarter maybe this time. Yeah, it seems like it's a little bit better this time, Like I said, not perfect, but it's on one disc this time, so maybe it's just not as much as there's just there's there's been very little video, you know what. Actually find some kind of way cool ways to integrate video into the three D scenes. It's not just like hey, let's cut to this lavish
or something a little bit. Yeah, it's like somebody has a vision of the future and it's like a small video kind of floating in space and having weird effects going on and stuff. That's's kind of neat. So Caliber five, as previously mentioned from the PlayStation three n Xbox three to sixty Never Dead, that game still exists. It's out great wait and Never Dead never made by Rebellion. But did that not get pushed? It? Had? I mean it has something got pushed? Was it not that? No, that
game is out? What else this game is out? Yea that comes out? Something in the next week or two got pushed. Not Never Dead to my knowledge? What else is coming out in February? Wasn't The Darkness, wasn't Syndic Kid, It wasn't Abel or uh double Fine Happy Action Theater is coming out on Xbox lab r Kid. You may have seen it on giant bomb dot com. No, so you may have just let you know I didn't. Okay, well, some some folks live at different lifestyle. I
saw it on YouTube dot com. I want you to be accepting of that and slash websites. Rhythm Party for Xbox Ibrika. Time you say that, I think you're going to say Rhythm Heaven Yet Party. It's the game game party of the new Millennium. We took exactly what the name of this thing was and then it made that the title of it. So now you have Rhythm Party, collection of rhythmic mini games that you play with connect oh retail uh no XP Who made that? pH I don't know, but Kenami published
it. Take from that what you will, I guess, although again they did. Puddle, which came out on three sixty last weekend, is coming to a place network this week long history of beautiful rhythm games from Konami. That's true, and according to this website giant bomb dot com, Konami made Rhythm Party. Okay, So yeah, that's that and those are new releases. Let's talk about some emails, you guys. Let's read some and then say things about them, and then read some more. My Skylanders Empire Vice
pre order got canceled. That's an email. That's an email I got. Where's Brad? Brad's looking at his emails? I was, in fact looking at emails bomb cast at giant bomb dot com. First email comes in from David Gaudriel. His question for the bomb cast tie Fighter. Oh god, what gentlemen. That's it? Yes, yes, yes, yes from Jeff, Yes from bradm it's a little more I don't know kind of cage. I don't know why, I think, because what does that mean? Like
I don't believe that the Arts could make a good new tie Fighter. So he's not actually putting his two thumbs up, but videos willing to say, willing to say at least two thumbs up this radio, so it carries more weight there. But I feel like it for it to have any meaning, you have to go like two thumbs up and also put your two thumbs up. What do you say? You say if you think that if you say
two thumbs up, you don't need to lift your two thumbs up. Do you think that it still has any meaning if there isn't an actual physical he's raising. I think you say it without putting the thumbs up, then it becomes ironic. Yeah, he's raising. He's raising his mind thumbs and he has an unlimited number of those thumbs up two thumbs up sitting on Anybody who's listening to this from their wrist, heaps feel like that you have. You
have not moved your hand from your chin for this entire conversation. I'm waiting for the rest of the I'm a afraid that a thumb might arrently go up my jaw, my drop. That's true, the inanity of this conversation. You'll sell it separately from my skull and some kid will get ripped off. That's right. You don't have no copyright on thumbs eight dollars for that jawless skull. Oh no, you got a kid, all right, it's fresh, already got a jaw. Yeah, Tie Fighter man sitting in front of
Wickman or three. All you want to do is just play. Realize how much I would rather have been playing Tie Fighter. But yeah, I haven't gone back to that game and so long. It could be good, it could be poop even No, it was great. It had escort missions, so it's not perfect whatever, but they were good escort mission. They were probably the best, that's a very qualified best, but the best escort missions of nostalgia right there. Good story, story was good, but like it
was what you're doing in the missions. It was so like that's the point of like the whole Wake Commander comparison, because the space combat in that game was legitimately poop. That stuff was like watching Dave play that stuff. I was like, dude, these missions were just the same shit every time. It was so shallow, clunkys. Tie Fighter. You can divertvert your shields, blaster power your shields, scan transports to figure out which one is carrying
the rebel contraband now the thumbs go up. He turned the thus into the hanging loose sign to chaka's up. I'm not sure, not sure how to interpret this. Horns the horns, but you're kind of had some other fingers. This one's cutter, still ironic. You're you're muddling the issue. Now you're doing both the chaka and you got your horns up, but you're also shaking them. That's how people get launched in space. It was up like that without the chakra or the shocker shaka. Not the shocker chaka bra chaka
out of the chakra chakra khan. No one ever said its chakra. I don't know. Yeah, sham Wisha did that, Dick. Let's get some zas rita's and ronas, apps and taps, brah Bro, I love apps and taps. Get some appies, some nibblis. Oh yeah, I mean had some boneless somethings. Oh man, put a bone in something bro Sean for Milwaukee, Misconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Keep it together. Man. Hey Gang, I'm really curious on your thoughts about Double Fine's recent exclusive work
for Microsoft. In the past year, those crazy awesome bastards have released the delightful Stacking. The artist formerly known as Trenched Sesame Street was upon a monster and now the impending happy action theater for connection. Seeing how Microsoft's exclusive developer lineup is, to put it gently, a little lacking, I got twist pixel gush, it would seem that Double Fine could be a clear target for
them to acquire as a first party studio. Do you think this would be a good move only for Microsoft, but but for Tim Schaefer and co over at Double Find Thanks big fan of the site and the bomb cast. Stacking was not a Microsoft game, and the Sesame Street was a Warner Brother game and the point well and also stacking came to p S three right, yes and supposedly PC or is that announced it's Annict stacking his nails? Yeah, Iron Brigade. No, it's shown up in found like Steam database stuff,
suggesting Iron Brigade is kind yeah, babe. The way Brad new would always say is like, if we would Microsoft, let us Like it's basically it was up to that. Okay, that'd be a great piece. That's the thing is they just make a bunch of publisher deals and then it's kind of up to the publishers about which platforms that stuff ends up on. Uh, And and they have had. I think, well, I think, you know Sean's observation of them having a higher visibility on the three sixty than of
the platforms for the past year plus. I think it is primarily due to their Connects experience. Yeah, yeah, and to be fair, connect and Microsoft has been snatching up developers that have been proven themselves capable of making Connect games like that's that seems like that is them, you know, a significant part of the Twisted Pixel acquisition. Oh wait, do you think that means Twisted Pixels is only going to make Connect games for a while. I don't
know. I don't know. I haven't thought of that. I mean, obviously they you know, they originally kind of made their mark with crazy platformers and such. But I think being able to make it seems like like Microsoft puts high value on developers that can make a decent Connect game. So hard to say, uh, would they buy them? I don't know. I don't know if that's a if that's an acquisition that makes sense for Microsoft,
or if that would make sense for Double Fine. I mean, Tell Fine's problem for the long time was just a money flow issue, so they seem to have that sort of sorted out. Also, that would be ironic after Microsoft fucking refused to release their first game and sold them off to Majestso for it. Yeah, it's probably a good idea for my for Microsoft. I I don't know how Double Fine feels about that now what they're sort of there, they've kind of got their legs after kind of a rough patch. It
seems like it definitely seems like it. They've been prolific this past year. If nothing else, folk show it's all an email. Tim from Chicago is our next emailer, Hey, bombardeers. I keep hearing people complaining about online passes and console games, and I have to wonder how this is any different from PC games all needing serial numbers. I'm primarily a PC gamers, so the thought of passes and the like don't bother me in or wonder if other
PC game playing folk who dabble in console games feel the same way. This whole thing just seems to remind me of when the serial number thing became the standard. Yeah, I've kind of been going back to that over and over again. Yeah, as this stuff gets more prolific on consoles, is like, yeah, it's serial numbers. It doesn't matter if if it's an online or offline, confirm that you bought this game. That's why you don't see used game sales on a PC. Yeah, and that market seems to be
doing okay, it does. So you know, all the all the talk of it'll kill everything if you disallow us sales, I don't know, it's just killed game stuff. Yeah, what is it gonna killed? Besides, the purveyors have used games. I think the argument becomes of the people that sell their games back to a game stop then use that money to buy more games and keep the cycle moving. And I mean the great, the great chain something something. Yeah, but the mortgage should adapt, right, Yeah,
games go on some pretty generous sales. Yeah, you know, it's true, And I would I would argue that there are a lot of games on Steam that would have been you know, forty fifty dollars retail games had this had had that still remained the market and the structure. Yeah yeah, maybe right, Maybe maybe that is the market needs to adapt to a wider standard pricing because publisher getting some money for every sale is better than them getting
full money from one only their new sales. Like a good example, when we start talking about hit Man, I wanted to go play hey Man blood Money, so started investigating the ways I can go play hit Man Blood Money. Can't buy it on a retail shelf anymore, and so it's like eight
dollars on Steam, It's thirty dollars on Xbox Live. I can buy the higher Hitman collection for like fifteen dollars on Steam, and it's just like who, So you realize, wait, whether it's a Microsoft tissue, which my understanding is it is more than an like an idose or Square issue, decent Blood on the Sand is sixty dollars on Games on Demand, Like like I'm going I am going to go buy that game use day GameStop because I looked it up and I can go to Gamestop's website and they will hold use games
for you, Like I just have to go to the counter and it's seven ninety nine. It's like, so what do you think I'm gonna do? Like, but it's in this transaction. I want to I'd pay more than seven bucks, but I'm not going to pay thirty dollars Like that's crazy, Like and it's just they're you know, they're losing out on a sale because they're not being the system is. I don't know if it's a system problem or like they I don't know, but I'm willing to pay money and you're
losing money because you're just not adapting. I don't I don't know how they probace so aggressively on that on the market place, it's ridiculous. Like Dargan Asylum has been like seven bucks for the game of the Year additional Steam, which is a better version in the Xbox One anyway, which has been thirty year forty like forever. You know, every business has to figure out what makes sense for them for for the pricing, and then you know, the
market trends and the forces will will determine if that's viable or not. Ultimately, so if if Microsoft's like, fuck it, we're gonna we're gonna price at this stuff and then they get shut out because of it, you know, like that's kind of how that story goes. But it's also fully their right to do. So. All right, this next email, Patrick, are you ready for this one? Yeah? Have you been preparing? I wrote them down? Okay, good Sextio coachin from Joanie Olakanan from Finland.
Hate duters. I'm a big fan of the site and there are two things I need to know about you gotta blah blah blah. Okay, we forget the second question. It was the only one really one question. You're from Jhnny and it's for Patrick. What are Patrick's top three favorite X Files episode? I picked four. That's not the question that means you are knew this was COVID. Yeah, I had. I had to think, Like it's been a while, I rewatched all the X Files before the second movie came
out. I asked him earlier today because I knew that springing it on him on the moment, in the moment would not be because the only one I'd be able to stay off the top of my head, because I'd like to be able to describe one. So Home, which is the only the X Files episode that was banned from TV's a bunch of hillbillies that are having sex with their mom who has no legs and is hiding underneath a bed, and she gets rolled out on a floorboard and as sex with her. So that's
that one scarred me as a kid. Aliens with aliens are serious. And then I just want to write this episode. Why do you want to write this episode? My therapistode that I need to get this out tote this episode. What are we doing here? It's dude, messed me up as fuck you Chris Cooper, Chris Cooper, Chris Cooper, what's the guy? No, it's not Chris Cooper. What's the guy? Who's Chris Chris Carter? Thank you? I was, I was, I wanted to leave it hand
was close. Are you all right? So my other favorite one Cooper is a celebrated character actor episode called Drive, which for Breaking Brad fans, uh, Breaking Bad fans. You ruined me on that because Brian Cranston is in this and it was written by Vince Gill again oh wow. And the reason,
oh this is the one that the re started. Yeah. The reason that uh, Vince children I'm back in uh picked up Brian Cranston for Breaking Bad was because this performance here that's pre Malcolm in the middle of Brian crampt yeah, long before this is uh yeah, this is like season four so uh yeah. And that one Brian Cranston has like this ringing in his ear that won't go away, and he has to keep going faster and faster because
dealing way the pressure doesn't build up. Uh And there's like some navy like array underneath the ground that was causing people to go crazy. So he's, uh, he has to keep driving fats. Yeah, I'm looking. Then there's also this woman that having sex with underneath bad a lot of under bed sex in these X Files episodes. This trend, the truth is out there. It's it like becomes like the race for fucking X Files. Uh. Then, okay, the throd one is is nearly I think his first second
season called Pusher. It's about a guy who can convince people to do other things. Uh. And at the end of the episode, Mulder gets into playing Russian Roulette with him. But the guy it's this tumor that allows him to convince other people to do other things and is fueled by energy drinks. Man, right, like me pretty close? How you convinced me to come here? Yeah? Exactly? All right, chop off your legs and roll you onto this bed? Yeah, seeing him weak? Do you know?
Do you know what else? Brian Christen played the dentist in that Seinfeld episode. Yes, have you seen that recently? I pulled that up over the weekend. That was weird. Okay, I ask a general X Files question, Having never really watched that much of it? Do they ever acknowledge that there are aliens? What do you mean? Is the truth out there? Is it? Is it? At some point? Is it just like that's
just that's aliens right there? Oh yeah, it goes beyond that, Yeah, goes well beyond, so that is not always just like well that's so the Yeah, that's the dynamic of the show. Is is Molder is you know, the one who really believes, like you know, goes too far and like seeing things when things aren't necessarily there be. Scully is the ongoing skeptics. She's the foil and where she'll see things where like you clearly they're
fucking aliens. But she's like, well but at some point it's just like that is oh yeah there really looking, dude, there are gray aliens running around, and eventually they impregnate they impregnate Scully even then they steal the baby later and everybody's on the same page aliens And that's why she believes it,
right, Yeah the movie did they go inside a ship? They go inside of ship, but then she gets knocked unconscious, and even though the ship flies away in front of her, she misses it and she doesn't believe it. But by the second half the series, she is, They've killed Mulder's sister like nine hundred times. That series ends real bad. Yeah, it was just like garbage, right. Oh yeah, some Russian scientists harvesting organs.
Wait, it wasn't even about aliens. No, why are you making X Files movie that's not about alienating because everyone would think it would be about aliens and then that's the twist. But then also like six years after the series had ended. Yeah, that second X Files, it was just pushing the core mythology. Yeah, dude, David Dukevnany keeps saying, I want to make a third one because the whole core no careful kraiof fornication is doing
really well. He's doing really well for himself, so he that that is pure, pure passion project for him. But well, because the whole core of the X Files mythology was the Mayans stuff. Yeah, so I think a fringe kind of has taken over the X File. Yeah, that sounds like that's because it made the same mistake that X Files made, which is fall too far up its own ass. Like it started off as a good kind of Monster of the Week format, much like X Files and and fucking
Parallel Worlds and no Fringes handles that really well. Fringe it had the opposite problem of all the it it tried to avoid Lost. It was like get really far up its own ass, which I enjoyed, but it was really bad at the like relationship and love story stuff. So eventually they just dropped. And so let's just get weird yeast and the blank of the week, right, h that's nice axtraz. Uh, it's all right. It's every show post Lost. Uh, Whereas Lost got accused of not knowing where it
was going. Uh. Now every show is so blatantly mapped out. But when like when they shoot it, you can just tell like they're they're too much following a roadmap, so they can show too much too early, and it's like, here's the weird stuff. But it's I like to believe that this is just like a side story from Jurassic Park. And so Sam Neils in it, and he's really good, and there's literally a line where he goes, welcome to Alcatraz. It's so clearly he's just playing yeah. It's
so clearly just playing yeah. But he's handing it up. He is playing a character actor and in that one he's pulling a Lance Hendrickson speaking of yourself from out which Patrick you see? Do you see this? Next? Emil comes in from Blake, Next and final email comes in from Blake in Texas. Uh, let's see here at the end of the Lost World Drastic Park, which you watched recently. I did watch recently the Drastic Park three, the boat bringing the so so you will confirm that Draft Park two, Lost
World not as bad as you remembered it. The Raptor, the Raptor scene where the camera pulls up and you just see them slinking through like the cornfield or whatever. It's yeah, some good. It's not good, but it's it's not as bad as I remember and not as bad as three. No, William H. Macy Man and that movie handing it up? Don't the kids show up at the beginning again like the way that they did. It's beginning of Yeah, I had a lot to drink. We'll see if you
can pull this out here all right? At the end of the Lost World Dress Park, the boat bringing the t Rex to San Diego has all of its crew members massacret Yep, there's a disembodied hand clutching the wheel in the steering room, yet the small room is otherwise undisturbed. How did this man die? T Rex couldn't get in there, and baby t Rex were traveling
via helicopter. No other dinos were on board. How did all of these crew members, and specifically the person at the steering wheel meet their gruesome doom? I feel like there's a brain teaser or something. Does he have the answer? The answer is the doctor was a woman. Thanks to who wrote in bomb cast at GiantBomb dot com as the email address. We're playing Iron
Brigade on TNT this week. Brad Muir and Sundry other folks from Double Fine Productions will be in the office out of here because unlike wouldn't want to. It's like we're playing our brigade, or like like the Royal were also play. The people are playing. Everyone's playing.
