- So I'm ready when you're ready. I'm gonna pull up my notes too. I made, I made brief notes. - I made no notes. - I was just doing it while we were waiting. Five hours for coffee. Alright, well, I'm gonna turn you on just a little bit. Just a little bit. - Just a little bit. Just a little bit. - Okay. - I trying to like, figure out how to hold the cord so it doesn't flop - Around everywhere. All right. - Here we go. Trying this time just a little bit. Alright.
- Are you still recording this in Discord? - No. - So we can't say hi to our friend. - We still could . Okay. Um, all right, here we go. Hey, welcome to Geek This. This is Dave Clements with my buddy David Hunt. - Hello everybody. Welcome to Geek This, - Uh, this episode's going to feel and sound different because we're at a library recording, because it was just easier to do this than go back home disturb family members and whatever after watching Aquaman too.
- Yeah. So we're kind of in a, a tight, smaller room, so there might be a little bit of ambient noise, but little, little bounce back. But you know, it, I think it'll be okay. - Yeah, I think so too. - I don't think our loyal listener will mind, - Uh, you know, if, uh, if that one person wants to donate a couple thousand dollars so that we can get a treated room, that's fine. We could do that. We could have a central location that's treated and all that stuff.
So, um, yeah, we're gonna talk about Aquaman. Uh, do we want to start on the first movie at all? - We can talk about it briefly. Um, I haven't seen it in years. I - Don't think either one of us has seen it in the last however many years since it came out. Five. It hasn't been five years, has it? - No, I I don't know how long it's been. I - Feel like it came out in 2018. That would be five years. - Was it in 2018? - I think so. - I don't believe you - . - That seems so long ago. - All right.
- Let's - Find out. - It was 2018. Oh my goodness. All right. Points. - I'm gonna keep track of this. I'll cash them in for a favor later in the evening. No. Um, yeah, I I did not watch the first one because I was like, how much am I gonna actually have to remember for the second one? - Yeah. I watched a, a recap video on YouTube. Yeah, - Same. So I was like, I don't have two hours to kill. I was busy today. So, - Yeah, I've been, um, I've been spending any free time.
I do have watching to watch things. I've been watching movies that have been, uh, nominated for the Golden Globes for this year. Yep. Um, and needless to say, Aquaman not gonna be nominated for any awards, ? - No. No. I don't think so. Um, yeah, the first Aquaman movie, um, if memory serves correctly, I had a good time with it. It wasn't great, but I think for me, it was nice to get away from the Zach Snyder stuff and, um, the Suicide Squad movie that had come out before that.
Not James Guns Mm-Hmm. The Suicide Squad, but Suicide Squad with Will Smith. And, yeah. I don't want to remember that movie. I don't think it all, - I I don't think it was as bad as some people think it was. Um, it, it wasn't great by any means, but, um, - I just, here's the thing. I think, honestly, if they wouldn't try, wouldn't have tried to push Jared let's Joker so much, I don't think I would've had such a problem with it.
Mm-Hmm. . But they just kind of pushed him into weird spots that felt like they didn't belong. - Yeah. I mean, he was definitely like the worst part of that film, but for as much as they promoted him for it, he really wasn't in it very much. Right, - Right. Uh, but yeah, as far as like late stage, or I guess maybe mid stage DCEU goes, uh, I think Aquaman was one of my favorites. Just 'cause it was fun. It, it felt Comic Booky. Mm-Hmm. . So - I, I liked Aquaman one.
Um, you know, it, little, little known fact. It was the, uh, highest grossing DC movie ever. Really? Not, not just DCEU like DC Comics movie ever. Hi. Higher than The Dark Knight. Higher, higher than any DC movie. It - Wasn't that good. . It really - Wasn't. I, I'm not saying it was the highest rated , just the highest grossing maybe. - 'cause people were hoping that it would be better than it was. But it was fun. I think that's the thing. Not to crop all over it. First Aquaman was good.
Um, is Popcorn movie, and I think that that's kinda, we will get to it, but that's where the second one is for me as well. Um, I'm not real sure even after watching the second one, how I feel about Jason Momoa in general. Mm-Hmm. . So he's not really selling these movies for me. I think I lack, I like Aquaman as a character, probably because of Ben Avery's obsession with his belief that Aquaman's probably the strongest and most powerful DC character. - Okay. - . Right.
Uh, maybe brainwash me a little bit, but, um, yeah, I, I enjoyed that first movie. I, I can't remember much of anything about it, but I think it's because it was an origin story movie, and those don't usually stick, like you get just enough to understand who he is. Mm-Hmm. . But nothing really stands out as very kind of cliched villain with Orum. Right. Is that Orum or Orum? I don't remember - Brother . - Yeah. His his half brother. - Yeah. - 'cause they share, they have the same mom. Mm-Hmm.
not the same dad, which, okay. We've watched the second movie. Is Dolph Lundgren his dad? Or is DOL Lundgren his, is he just like a, I don't know, head of security? - I thought - , - I thought that guy was, uh, me's dad, but, but I don't know. . I, I don't either. No. So there's, there's a lot of little plot points that unless you're really, really paying attention, that that kind of, they kind of just go, go through it real quick.
- Right. Especially when we're talking about a movie that was five years ago. Mm-Hmm. . I'm not gonna remember all that. Um, it wasn't that memorable, but it was fun. - The thing I remember most about the first Aquaman was just how many, um, how many like settings there were, how many, like different, like, they were like, jumping from place to place.
It felt like, you know, like I remember like, it felt like all of a sudden they were in the desert and all of a sudden they were here and they were like, they were just jumping from place to place to place. Yeah. Um, and without getting too much into it, they kind of do the same thing. In this movie. I - Thought , I was thinking the same thing, uh, in the desert scene of the second movie. Um, I was like, wait, have I went to this before ? This seems really familiar . So, um, yeah.
I actually, I just looked it up while you were talking and Yes, do Lre is Mara's dad, but what a weird relationship to just be like, like how - Does that work? Yeah. So like he, his brother was, um, engaged to Mera. - Right. - Because it was like a political thing. Yeah. - I don't know. It's weird. Those are family dynamics that I'll have to research later. - . Yeah. Maybe, maybe in the far future when we're out of things to do, we can go back and watch all the D CEU movies.
That's not something I want to do anytime soon. agreed. But, um, I wouldn't mind doing it eventually. - Yeah. Um, so yeah, I don't know what else we really have to say about that first movie other than, you know, give it a score basically. And, you know, it was fine. You know, I feel like it was, it was kind of a breath of fresh air compared to what we had been getting. Mm-Hmm. . Um, but gosh, it's been forever since, you know, man of Steel and Batman versus Superman or Batman v Superman.
Okay. Yeah. You're saying it the wrong - Way. I would say it's, um, let's see, how many movies are there in the DCEU? - Like 10? I think that's it. Versus Marvel 792 . - Uh, it's a, there's 15. - Okay. I wasn't far off. I'm trying to be funny, but, - Um, wow. It does not feel like there's 15, but I mean, just in the past couple years, you know, you had Black Adam Shazam, fury of the Gods, the Flash Blue Beetle. So like, it doesn't feel like there's 15
because there's been like a bunch come out recently. Yeah, - That's true. Yeah. Speaking of Blue Bele, and I'm just gonna say it, there was an underrated movie. Yeah. I was bummed that I didn't actually go see it in theaters. I watched it on Max and I had a good time with - It. Yeah. I really liked it. - That was fun. - Honestly, if , it's in me. Like, like if you were to rate all the D CEU movies. Mm-Hmm. , it's probably up, it's probably in the top five for me.
- I would say top three for me probably. - Yeah. I haven't actually sat down and raided them all, but, um, yeah. I, I really liked it. Yeah. - So, um, I guess before we go too much further, because it seemed like the last episode when we recorded this, we forgot what our format was for the show. Um, before we jump into Aquaman two, what we've been geeking out about since we last recorded? - You go first, Dave. - Me, uh, I guess I'll kind of keep it on the subject of movies and things like that.
There is a surprise YouTube channel, , uh, called Corridor Digital. They've been around for a long time, um, probably longer than Geek. This has, and they do a lot of like, special effects, uh, videos. And they have a few series that are basically like industry people react to. So they have like special or, yeah. What do they call it? Yeah. Special effects artists React, um, stunt Men React, uh, animators React. They have like a few different series within a series.
Um, and they just put out one about, they were talking about Godzilla. 'cause Godzilla minus one just came out not too long ago. And then we have Kong, Godzilla, X Kong or something like that that's coming out. I don't think it has come out yet. - I don't, no, it hasn't, - They're not really in my wheelhouse. But they went over some special effects from, um, Godzilla minus one, and that was very impressive and I kind of want to go see it. - Yeah. I've heard good things about it.
Um, a friend of ours, uh, Zach, uh, he saw it, he's really big into like the monster stuff, you know, king Kong Godzilla, and, um, he said it was like probably his movie of the year. Uh, and I've heard a lot of other podcasters that I listen to really praise it. So yeah, I would, I would like to see it. Um, at this point I'll probably have to wait until it hits some sort of streaming platform. Yeah. I don't know if I'll be able to make it to the movie theater to see it.
Yeah. Um, but I'm definitely interested in it. And once it hits streaming, um, maybe we'll be late to the party, but maybe geek this, we'll have an episode about it, then we can bring on Zach as a special guest. And yeah, - I think that'd be a blast. But yeah, corridor Digital, um, it's something they put out, uh, at at least one episode every week of whatever different stuff they're making. They make some really good shorts that utilize, um, special effects and, and things like that.
So that's like your jam. I would definitely go check out Corridor Digital, or even Film Riot. They're like two really great YouTube channels that I just cannot recommend enough. So yeah, definitely go check that out. But, uh, you, you mentioned, uh, nominated movies. Is that kinda your thing? Or is there something else you've been checking out?
- Yeah, so, um, not long ago, I forget when it was, but not long ago, they announced the, um, nominations for the, this, this upcoming, uh, golden Globes. And, um, people who know me know that I, I like to see what's, what's like popular or considered good by like, the general public Mm-Hmm. . Um, and this past year has been kind of busy for me, so I've missed a lot of, a lot of things that have come out.
And there's a lot of things that aren't out yet, um, that are nominated, that are like in theaters. Um, so I've been going through, uh, the list of those movies and, um, watching what I can on streaming. Mm-Hmm. . Um, so like, I, I watched a Barbie for the first time, which is, is good. Yeah. I liked it. It's, it's fun. Uh, I it's not like the best movie ever , you know? Yeah. - Yeah. - It has no good message. And it's, it's a lot of fun. Yeah. You know, a fun music number. . Yeah.
Um, I can see why it's nominated for a lot of awards. Mm-Hmm. and, and you know, it really, it and the whole of Barb Heimer. - Yeah. - Like, it saved the box office this year. - Yeah. I, I would totally agree. - So, you know, we, we can thank it for, you know, saving movies a little bit. Yeah. Especially, you know, in this crazy year that's, I had a strike that was months and months. Yeah. For sure. I think next year is going to, we're gonna feel it a little more.
- Oh yeah. Yeah. I mean, we already said on the Marvel side, we're gonna feel it. We've turned it down to a single Marvel, uh, or MCU or, um, movie. - And even that is, it's an MCU movie, but it's Deadpool, so it's like an MCU, but with like, hints of the old Fox regime. Right, - Right. So yeah, it's gonna be, it's gonna be something. I guess we, we do have Madame Webb coming out, but nobody wants to see - That's a complete Sony. I know. But nobody actually wants to see that movie.
It looks like garbage - . - I'll watch it. I'll - Watch it. I'm pretty sure. - I mean, I hate to say it, but there there are, there are pretty women in it. And - That's true. That's true. - And I, so I've, I still haven't seen Morbius. - I fell asleep twice. . - Maybe before, uh, Mme. Webb comes out, we can watch the, like five Sony Yeah. The Sony verse or whatever, whatever they're calling it. Or I don't - Know what they they're calling it. Yeah. Sony verse
- Sounds great. Venom, venom verse - Venom, venom, venom, venom, - Venom. Yeah. Because I, um, I don't think I ever saw Venom Two and I haven't seen Morbius. Um, - I'd love to say you're missing something. . I don't think you are. - . You, I saw Venom One and it was fun for what it was. Um, - Yeah. - But every review I've read about Venom Two and about Morus, I'm like, I, yeah. Even me, somebody who loves comic book movies. Mm-Hmm. , you gotta draw a line somewhere, right? Yeah.
Like, but now that they're like on streaming, you know, maybe I can, I, if I'm not paying any extra money for it, it's Right. Sure. I'm just giving up some time. Yeah. - Yeah. And if, I mean, if you can find something to do while you're watching it, that's even - Better. - . That's usually how I consume movies after the fact is during work. I have a movie playing while I work. Pause it when I need to, but, uh, yeah. - Oh, um, I saw, uh, air, which is the movie. Oh, - The Michael Jordan.
- Yeah. Shoe movie. The the shoe movie. The Shoe - Movie. Not Michael Jordan - Movie. Michael Jordan. Right. He, he's in it Shoe, but barely. Right. - Yeah. Actually that wasn't too bad. - Yeah. I liked it. Yeah. Has a really good cast. - Yes. Which is weird. Yeah. Like why would you cast all of these? - Like, how much money did they put into the casting for this random Right. Shoe movie . Right. - Yeah. It's weird that they felt like that was a story that needed told, like it was a good movie.
Mm-Hmm. . It was enjoyable, but so weird. - Have you, uh, played any video games lately, Dave? Oh, - Actually, no. Uh, , uh, I, I think the only thing that I've really played recently, there was an update to, uh, two of my favorite games that I've played this year, dredge and Dave the Diver. They actually got like crossover DLC. Oh. So, uh, there is Dave the Diver stuff in, is - That on Switch? Yeah. Yeah, I thought - So.
Yeah. Uh, so there's Dave, the diver stuff in Dredge and Dredge stuff in Dave The Diver. So, uh, I just picked Dredge back after downloading that DLC and there's also another DLC for it that I haven't played yet, but I'll get that soon. But not a whole, not a whole lot in the game department for me. - Those were both, uh, nominated for, uh, game awards. Oh, were - They? Yeah. Well, cool. They, they deserve it. Dredge was just wonderful.
And Dave the diver is terrifying at Moments for, you know, for somebody that does not like the ocean. Um, but yeah, I I've loved both of those games so far. - Yeah. I, um, I haven't played either of them, but they're, they're on my list. Yeah. Um, I haven't had a ton of video game time lately. Mm-Hmm. because my three-year-old commanders are tv. Yeah. Um, - That's what your switch is for.
You just undo it. Uh, - See - - Yes and no. Like, there are so many games on my PlayStation that I want to play. Yeah, that's true. And, and I mean, maybe for this specific reason, I'll buy one of the, um, the PlayStation portals. - Oh, yeah. That's a conversation we should have at some time. - I - About that. - I really want one just for that reason. , because my son takes over the TV so often. Like it, I'm the prime market for that. Yeah. Um, but I just don't have the money right now. Right,
- Right. I get that. - Uh, but I have, I played, uh, a game called Viewfinder on the PlayStation. It's a really neat puzzle game. Okay. Um, where you, like, you could, you like, have like a Polaroid camera and you like go around, you like, take pictures and then you put the pictures like into the environment and you can like, walk into the pictures and like, have I - Heard of this before? This sounds so familiar. It's, - It's really neat. Um, - Sounds fun.
- Yeah. And then I played a short little game called, um, VIBA. I don't, I think that's how you pronounce it. - Yeah. I started playing that. - Yeah. Uh, now it was, it was fun. You know, it, um, has a good message about like, um, different cultures and, Mm-Hmm. , um, what's the word I'm looking for? Heritage. Like, heritage and like, yeah. Yeah. Americanization and, yeah. - Yeah. Definitely not a game that I, it, it didn't turn out how I thought it was gonna be.
Yeah. I thought it was literally just going to be like a cooking game. Right. And I was like, cool. I love stuff like this . And then I was like, oh, there's kind of a deep deeper story to this. Okay. Interesting. - I, um, and then I, uh, downloaded, I haven't played yet, the, uh, free DLC for God of War Rag Rock, uh, Valhalla. Oh, - Yeah, yeah, yeah. You told me about that. Yeah. - So it, it is downloaded. It is on my PlayStation.
I just haven't, I, when I, when I play, I want to know that I have time to sit down and dedicate a Right. Decent amount of time to it. Yeah. But who knows when. That would be - Hopefully - Soon. Hopefully soon. - You got, you got time for, you know, Christmas, new Year's time. Maybe. - Maybe. Maybe, maybe. - Alright. So that's what we've been geeking out about. If you guys have anything that you wanna talk about, uh, let us know over.
We're on social media. Uh, Facebook right now is kind of the main place, and I can't figure out our Instagram ins Instagram password. So, uh, one day that'll, that'll work again. But, uh, - Well, do you not know the Facebook password? - I do. - It should be the same. - It's not. - That's weird. - It is weird because it's, - It's, it's all meta. - I know. - Hmm. That's a conversation for, for off the air. Right? It's weird. - It is weird. Uh, but yeah.
Uh, let's go ahead and talk about Aquaman two. The Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is the official title, right? - Yeah. Yeah. And here's where we insert audio clip of something. I'm - Iron Man, - . No, no. I'm Aquaman. - Oh, yeah. Oh, geez. Uh, so without, um, you guys should know this by now, we're gonna spoil things because it's not really fun to talk about a movie without spoilers. So we'll do our best until we decide not to. And, - Uh, we're getting ready to talk about Aquaman.
- Yeah. - This is your spoiler warning. . You have been warned. - Alright. So, um, yeah, I, I, I don't know where you want to start. I was just thinking, I'm just gonna give my overall rating of this movie. Um, 'cause I feel like that helps inform everybody on my overall opinion. I rather had fun with this movie. I I gave it an eight out of 10, personally, - An eight out of 10, eight - Out of 10. I know. Wild. I just, I - Had fun. Oh, Dave. I - Had fun - With it.
Oh, Dave. I - Had fun with it, and the reason I had fun - With it. Okay. I won't judge. I - Won't judge. The reason I had fun with it was because I went in not expecting anything. Great. Did I get something great? Not really. Did I enjoy sitting next to my best friend watching this movie? Absolutely. Absolutely. So that's a point in its favor. And it was just a fun popcorn movie, and I just shut my brain off. And there we go.
That I gave it an eight x 10 and I'm probably gonna regret it in a couple weeks, but I'm still on that high, except for that ending. That ending really was not great. - Yeah. I, - I I'm gonna say you didn't rate it as - High. I did not. No. I mean, it's, it's not, it's not awful. Um, by any means, you know, it's, it's not, um, oh, I'm trying to think of like a, it's not like Thor too bad. - Okay. Can I justify my rating a little bit?
I'm also thinking DCU I'm not, I'm not talking about like, all movies ever. Like, this is, this would be an eight out of 10 in the DC movies. You still wouldn't put it that high. No, I enjoyed it. - I mean, and, and that's okay. You know, you're allowed to enjoy things. This is the - Last episode to Geek this David's gonna fire me. - No, I mean, I, I enjoyed it too. You know, it was, it, it was an, uh, you know, if I guess you could call it a popcorn movie Yeah.
You just go in mindless fun adventure. But I think that's one of my biggest problems with it. It's just se just kind like the first movie where it's like, oh, that was fun. But it's very, I feel like it's gonna be very forgettable. Yeah. I feel like in a week I'm gonna be like, wait, what happened in that movie? Yeah. Um, - Actually I'm already hitting that . I could have forgot some of the things that have happened. - , the, um, the villain was awful.
- It's three different villains technically. - Right. I mean, but it was one. So, so the main villain that you didn't see until the very end, and then they like killed him like right away. Yeah. - Yeah. Like a three minute Yeah. Time slot in the movie. Yeah. Um, - That felt really cheap to me. Mm-Hmm. . Um, the tone change was like, drastic. It went from like, we're joking around making a bunch of cheesy Aquaman jokes to we're gonna kill a baby - . - And it was like, wow.
They, that that, that escalated quickly. Um, so, um, it's - Only me, Arthur, or you we're the end of the bloodline. No, we're not. - Dun dun dun. I - Was like, yeah. - Now, um, from the previews Mm-Hmm. , I thought they were going to kill the kid, but I thought it was, I thought it was gonna be a much like heavier tone film overall. - Uh, yeah, I could see that. - Um, but then it wasn't, it was like, we're just, we're just joking around like for the most of the movie.
Yeah. We're just like throwing these cheesy jokes around, which is fine. You know, it's fun, it's light. But then they couldn't decide what kind of movie they wanted to be again. Then all of a sudden they're like a dark, like, we're gonna kill a kid. . - Well, that's, that's James Juan. Which, so that was the thing that kind of hit me. I was watching a, a review of Aquaman one, um, and I totally forgot that James won directed Mm-Hmm. the first, did I say Iron Man?
I think I said Iron Man. I meant Aquaman . Uh, there's a reason I said Iron Man. Um, but I forgot that James one had directed the first one, uh, because I know him from like Saw and the Conjuring Mm-Hmm. and horror movies. So then to like, see him direct a all out comic book movie and its sequel was weird. Mm-Hmm. . Um, I gotta say I was a little disappointed that he didn't do more within his wheelhouse. Like, not that it had to be a horror movie, but I I think anybody could have directed this.
- Yeah. - Um, - Which some might argue that with that, with a lot of the MCU movies too. That's true. You know, that they get these like really high profile directors to direct something that with the exception of like a, a handful of movies that you can really like, feel the director's presence in it. Right. Most of them are just kind of Mm-Hmm. , you know, they're a fill in director. Yeah. - Yeah. I will say I feel like it, this movie felt over edited to me.
Mm-Hmm. . Um, obviously like the big, no pun intended, but Red Flag, uh, of the movie was you could feel that they edited the crap out of Amber. Her's scenes. Like they cut her out of as much as possible, you - Know? But I still felt like she was in the movie a lot more than I thought she was going to be. Yeah. Because the way, like, after her trial, it sounded like they were like, she was gonna be like one scene. Mm-Hmm. . And then that was it. But she was still in. Yeah.
- Also, the way that they, okay. The way they opened the movie is like, you know, it's, it's Arthur telling Arthur Junior this story about how he's, you know, big tough King Daddy Mary is nowhere to be around. Mm-Hmm. . You know, she like, you don't see her, you don't see her. You see a lot of clips of, oh, I'm getting up in the middle of the night with my baby boy , which great. Like, I love that great dad job.
She's nowhere to be found. And - Then all of a sudden a bad mom - , all of a sudden she's in - Bed with him. Somebody's gotta take care of the kingdom while he's busy being a dad. Right. . - Yeah. And that's another thing where there was a part of me while we're watching the movie where, um, he rescues his brother and I'm like, oh, this would be cool. The brother redeems himself, takes the throne back and Arthur gets to be Justice League daddy. Like, whatever. That didn't happen. You know?
I feel like there were, I know, I, I, I rated it really high and now I feel dumb. - . You can, it's not too late. , we haven't stopped the recording. You can, I never actually gave you my rating. That's true. Go ahead. I'll probably go with a six out of like, if we're going out of 10, a six out of 10. Okay. Because I did it like, I, I liked it. Mm-Hmm. , uh, actually no. I'll probably go with a five out of 10. . I, I talked myself down. - Okay. I'm gonna go with a six out of 10. Okay.
I'm gonna move myself back down. I got a little excited a little. I don't know. We - Want to like things, I think, I think that's, - Yeah. I don't want to be the guy that's like, oh, this movie sucks. Right. It didn't suck. It didn't suck. It just wasn't, - It was just average, you know, it was just Yeah. A movie. Yeah. - I, I think I honestly though, I feel like it benefited from being its own thing.
Mm-Hmm. . Like, they weren't shoehorning Superman or Marine Lantern or something else in here to set something else up. And it was kind of nice that it's like, okay, it's not a good wrap up Yeah. To this - Not, it's not a wrap up at all. Yeah. If, if you watch this and you didn't know the, like, outside, like politics of the Mm-Hmm. DCU ending. Yeah. Uh, you wouldn't know any, like you wouldn't know it's ending. You wouldn't know it's the last movie. Right.
You would Now there's no, like, there's - No post credit - Scene No. Like tag for a sequel or anything. Yeah. Um, - It doesn't even wrap up Aquaman. Well, Mm-Hmm. Which is, which is a bummer. But at the same time, it's kind of like, I don't know, I'm Okay. Like it wasn't a good wrap up of anything. Not Aquaman. Yeah. Not the DCEU as it currently is. Um, - I think my biggest issue with it is it just felt like it didn't do anything new.
Mm-Hmm. like, like, there was, there's a scene in it that almost, so we kind of joked about, um, uh, Moss Isley, like Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's a scene. Like, it felt like they were in like Watered Moss isley. - It was like, it was like they took the, the, the Moss Ely Cantina scene and the scene where you go to, uh, where, uh, the Gungan Mm-Hmm. Kingdom in, uh, Phantom Menace. Yeah. It's like they merged those two ideas together and we kind of got, you know, the Gungan Moss Ely Cantina scene.
It was so I remember you leaning over to me - . And, and like, when I saw that, I was like, this is such like, I don't wanna say it was a rip off, but it sort of felt like it. Yeah. And then there was another scene that felt almost exactly to me, like the, um, in episode two, the like, um, air like chase scene where they're like flying through the city. Um, yeah. You know, where the like Anakin jumps out and into the Mm-Hmm. into the, the speeder and like, you know what I'm talking about?
- Yeah. And it's been a long time. Sure. Yeah. I - Know what you're talking about. There was a scene that felt a lot like that to me, and I'm like, man, like they're borrowing a lot of, - Do you think that's how they made the sizzle wheel ? Like what James won is just kind of like, I don't, I don't know what Im - Doing. It's like, I like Star Wars, - I like Star Wars, but, uh, what, how do we, how do we do this? That's - Like Star Wars in the water. .
- George Davis - Was like, wonder Wars , bro, - I already did this kind of not great, but you can try. - Uh, and then the CGI itself, especially in like the first half of the film Mm-Hmm. a lot of the film for that first half felt like a video game, uh, cut scene. - Yeah. - Yeah. Like, I felt like I was just watching a completely CGI generated, like it didn't feel like the actors were actually there Yeah. For some of those action scenes.
- Yeah. Yeah. And I think, I don't remember the first one being like that so much. Like, I don't feel like it felt overly CGI i'd this one. It was just like they were cramming it down your throat. Mm-Hmm. . And it's funny because I remember you and I talking about, like, when we were talking about going to see it, you're like, is th like, do you not like 3D? And I was like, I don't care. It's not my preferred thing. You could see that there were scenes that were specifically filmed to take it.
It felt like we were watching a movie from 15 years ago. Mm-Hmm. where they're like, three D's really cool. We're gonna have somebody's hand or this, uh, this What's the, what's the, the, I'm I'm - The Trident. - The Trident. That's what it was. I was gonna say triune. And I was like, that's not right. But yeah, like the Trident, like, there were multiple shots like that Mm-Hmm. where you're just like, really? - Yeah. I, - I'm going down to a five out 10 - .
I'm glad I I brought you down to reality . And for some people it might even be lower, but I think I'm gonna stick with a five out of 10 just because, you know, I don't regret seeing it. - Right. - You know, um, I don't know, maybe I'm talking myself down to a, it might be, are - You coming to - A four out 10? I might be going down to a four out of 10.
- . I think I'm gonna stick with five - Because with like, I feel like with a four out of 10, it's like low enough that I'm like, I recognize it's not like a great movie. Yeah. But I still like had some enjoyment in it. Yeah. You know, like, I feel like when you get down to a three, you're like, this was rough. Yeah. This was a bad movie. But like with a four, it's like, I recognize the faults in it, but I still had a good time. Yeah. - Um, - I, but you can, I'm not,
I'm not trying to talk you down. Nope. I'm, - I'm, I think I'm gonna say it a five. Like, I didn't hate it. I didn't love it, but, um, yeah. I just, I, I'll tell you though, if I was gonna go down another point, it would've been for that freaking ending. Mm-Hmm. So the end of the movie, and by now you guys should have seen this because we've spoiled plenty. There's - Been, or, or you just don't care about being spoiled. That's - True.
There's that, uh, you get to the end of the movie and, you know, one of the goals that Aquaman had was, uh, we, the, we are going to unite the land and the sea. And that gets done at the end of the movie. And he has this press conference and what's the last line of the movie? I Am Aquaman. - Yeah. - And I was glad that that was the moment when we got to stand up and leave. 'cause I would've stood up and left if it would've been earlier than that. Um, I just, - Yeah.
I just shook my head at that. I'm like, really? - Like, I'm sure it was supposed to be funnier than it was. There were a couple scenes like that. Mm-Hmm. where I was just like, I don't, I don't think this is as funny as you think it is. Yeah. The thing that got me the, the, the funniest thing in that movie, I think for me was when they're in the, the jungle and Aquaman and Orum are running, and it's, before they address it, I'm watching the way Orum running. He's got his arms like Yeah. Behind
- Him. That was funny. - And I caught that before they even brought it up. And I just thought it was hilarious. Um, but overall it wasn't like an incredibly funny movie. They were a good, good couple chuckles. - Yeah. There was a, a part that I thought was funny where, um, Aquaman picks up this like, like bug this huge, like what kind of a Yeah, it was, - It - Was some sort of cockroach. Yeah. Some sort of cockroach. Mm-Hmm. .
And he's like, like he, he's, he had been telling his brother about how, uh, how much like great food that they have on the surface that like, oh, you've never tried. And he picks up this like, cockroach and he is like, here, eat this. Mm-Hmm. - . - And he's like, this is the, um, what do you call it? Like the, um, the something of the, the land? Yeah. - I think he was just talking about how it's a delicacy and - Oh, what? I can't even think about what, man. Anyway, this is bad podcasting. .
Uh, anyway, he was talking about how, how great it was. So then he like ate it and was like, oh, you expected him to be like, oh, that was gross. Like, why'd you, why'd you make me eat that? Yeah. But he just like smiles and like eats it. And then the only post credit scene, I guess there was that. Yeah. Um, which is like a mid credited scene. Was him like eating like at a burger place. Mm-Hmm.
. And he, um, like a bug, like glands next to him and he picks it up and he puts it on his burger and starts eating it. Yeah. And that, so that was like a funny little moment. And there were a few like that, but you could definitely tell they thought their movie was a lot funnier than it actually was. - Yeah. Um, which is a bummer. I i, I I think you made a good point when you were talking about how we want to like things.
And so it's really hard to be like, oh, this, it really wasn't that great. Um, but I don't know. This is, it is one of those movies that if you were thinking about going to see it in theaters, I would just say, eh, just wait till you, you're at home, you'll probably enjoy it more. Yeah. 'cause then you can, you can pause it, go to the bathroom, get your own snacks, whatever. - I mean, at least it's not like it's, it was like a two hour movie. Yeah. So at least it's not like super long. Right.
You know, not one of these like almost three hour mm-Hmm. superhero films. Um, but yeah, I, for me, if I was rating it on like a, like must watch it can skip it. Like, um, I would probably rate it as a stream it For sure. Especially if you like the, like if you, if this is in your market, if you like superhero movies Mm-Hmm. . I would probably skip the theaters and then watch it at home.
- Yeah. I would definitely agree with that. Um, - Especially like right now, there are a lot of, there are other movies in the theaters to see. Right. Um, like if we didn't go see this, I would've been like, let's go see Iron Claw, because I've, that looks really good. Yeah. - That does look great. Um, also Wonka like, - Yeah. Wonka there, there's, - There's other movies out - There. Poor Things. The, uh, Emma Stone movie that looks kind
of weird in a good way. It does - Look weird in a good way. Uh, but yeah. Um, yeah, it was just, it was an okay movie and I'm glad that we went together. Mm-Hmm. , I think, um, - I'm glad I went with you to talk you down. I, you, you, if you would've, if we wouldn't have seen this together and you would've walked in this, it's like, yeah. Eight outta 10. I'm like, Ooh, buddy. Did, did you see the same movie as I did? ? - I don't know if I've been drinking more than Normal lately than not.
- What's in that coffee? Dave , - Um, looks like garlic based on . The, the label. It says gr it looks like an lc. It could be Icy, but I think it's a garlic boars goat . Uh, but yeah. Uh, I don't, I don't know how many more times we can say it. It's okay. Yeah. Uh, if, if DC movies are your thing, if you have like the Pokemon mindset of gotta watch 'em all do it, watch it. Uh, but I would just wait to stream it, wait till it hits max here in another month or two.
- Of course, if you're listening this far into the podcast, you've probably either, either seen it Mm-Hmm. already. And do you know, you missed our warning. You know, we should have put this at the beginning. . Right. - . - Um, or you don't care about it at all. See, - What I was trying to do, I was trying to lull people in to listening to the entire episode when I was like, eight out of 10 lies. It was always lies. You're - Like, oh, eight out 10. I have to listen to this.
- Let me, let me, I'm gonna check my notes and make sure there's nothing else I want talk about. Uh, nope. I'm good. - So, so this really is the end of the DCEU. Um, I'm - Not sad about it. I'm, I'm actually excited for whatever James Gunn is working on. - Yeah. I mean, um, I really enjoyed the Suicide Squad. Mm-Hmm. . And if, if it's in the same vein, um, I'm, I'm a little nervous about, like, there's a big difference between being like a director of your own film.
Mm-Hmm. and being like the head of an entire like, division. Right. Um, so I, I guess we'll have to wait and see. I like how upfront he seems to be with everyone. Mm-Hmm. , um, he's been on like Twitter or X or whatever you want to call it. Mm-Hmm. , uh, like telling people about his plans and things and, um, that could either be a good thing or a bad thing. - 'cause he's actively working on, um, what are they calling it? Superman reborn? Or is that,
- That's - Superman. It's a - Superman movie. Yeah, it's, it's Superman. Um, um, - I think they've, they've cast Superman already. I think they've cast Lex Luther already. Um, actually they cast, um, oh, I can't, I'm doing bad with the names today. - Did they cast Superman? - I thought that they did. I know that they cast Lex for sure. - I had heard a bunch of like, you know, fan casting, but I hadn't heard any like, official news on it. - Yeah. Uh, I'm actually really excited.
I, for who? They cast for Lex. They, he just cast, um, Nicholas Holt as Lex Luther in Superman Legacy. Mm-Hmm. . That's what it's called. So that will be fun. I am, I'm a huge fan of Nicholas Holt. I go watch the menu, go watch Mad Max Fury Road, um, - Which, uh, we might be covering when, like next year with the new Mad Max movie coming out.
I haven't seen any of them. Um, - Yeah, let us know if you want us to actually go through all of them, whether that's, uh, and the main feed or premium feed. We're kind of working on something in that realm. - Uh, and we might do, like Dave and I sit down and we like watch them and then do one episode on all of the Yeah. The past ones. Yeah. Um, yeah, I think, - Yeah, I've, I've always been a, a huge fan of the Mad Max movies. They're, uh, they're different. I, I will say that for sure.
Um, you know, because we're talking about, I mean, late seventies, early eighties, I think, I can't remember when the first one came out, uh, but back, back when Mel Gibson was Australian. Um, so, yeah. Uh, we'll, we'll do that. I, I'm excited for Fiosa. I will say that that's, that's a movie I'm looking forward to. Um, Ani Taylor Joy is becoming one of my favorite actresses. Mm-Hmm. I think she's in, I would say
for most people, she's probably underrated. Um, - Everything I've seen her in, I've been impressed. Even, um, even the, uh, what was that? That, uh, mu New Mutants, you know, she was probably like one of the highlights of that film. Yeah. Uh, in that not good film. - No. . It was not. Uh, but yeah. Anyway, we're getting into whatever's coming. We're, so by the way, we're recording this literally the day that Aquaman Yes. Today
- Is December 21st. Yeah. - So you, you may be hearing this after the New year where I'm gonna try and get it out asap, but, um, yeah. Uh, - I, so the, the only DC movie coming on next year, I think is, uh, the Joker sequel. - Oh, yeah. Joker foia do Mm-Hmm. , which I guess is a musical. - Yeah, that's what I hear. So I'm excited for it. Uh, joker was different. Yeah. Um, - I, I enjoy Joker. I've only watched it once. Mm-Hmm. . I was, it was kind of a tough movie to watch. Yeah.
- Um, I've seen it twice. I saw it once in theaters and then, um, I bought it. I bought the Steel book and I watched it again. Yeah. - Uh, I think this sequel's gonna be a lot different. I actually like Lady Gaga as an actress. Mm-Hmm. . Um, not that I've seen her in a lot. I've only seen her in a Star as Born, but she's really good in that. So, uh, I have my fingers crossed for this sequel. So, um, yeah. I don't think I have anything else to say.
- I think, uh, just a little preview for what's coming after this. Um, I think the next episode that we do, we've talked about, uh, covering the, uh, what if season two Yeah. As a whole. Um, so that's coming out tomorrow. Tomorrow, um, as we record this, the, they're doing like one episode every day. Um, and then, so it ends sometime next week, I think. I don't remember how many. Yeah. I think it's supposed - To end. - I don't know how many episodes there are - On, uh, yeah.
- But yeah, we've talked, we, I think our plan right now is to record an episode once they're all done. Um, yeah. So if, if not, then I'm sorry about Empty Promises , but hey. But I, I, right now, that's the plan. - People expect empty promises from us. I've, I've set like a really good, - But we're trying to do better. - We are trying to do better. Uh, but yeah, this is our official last recorded episode for the year 2023.
Um, next year, uh, you know, we're, we're not gonna overcommit, um, but we are really gonna do our best to give you at least at minimum two episodes per month. And, - Uh, and hopefully more. Yeah. - Yeah. Hopefully more than that. We'll be launching a premium version of the show, uh, that I'll have some extra bonus episodes for when, hey, the two of us can't get together. So we're either gonna record something solo or with a guest or something like that.
And, uh, yeah, I, I think I'm always thinking of new things that we can do. And I know you're always thinking of stuff that we should just should do. So, uh, yeah, I think that's it for the year. So, - So thank you. Thank you everyone who has, uh, rejoined us on this journey of, uh, geek this. Um, we're excited for, for what's coming next year. You know, it's, it's nice to be able to, like, especially like this episode has been nice.
'cause it, I feel like the dynamic is better when we're sitting in the same room. Yeah, I would agree. . Yeah. It's, it's unfortunate that we, you know, live a little further away, um, than optimal. A lot closer than some podcasters that we know. That's true. Um, - That's very true. - But, uh, you know, hopefully in the next year we'll be able to do more episodes like this where we're recording together. 'cause I feel like it flows a little better.
- I, yeah. Yeah. I, I think for me, there's still like an awkwardness of like, we're talking to each other, but not talking to just each other. We're talking to other people that aren't in this room, but I'm looking at you. Uh, so, uh, yeah. But thank you guys. Like, we're, like David said, we're like, we're really excited to be back to be doing this and, - Um, and send us your feedback. - Yeah. We're, uh, we're always [email protected].
Uh, I do believe that the e you can try to email addresses [email protected] or [email protected]. We actually, uh, now that I bring that up, uh, we got a message from a listener who was like, Hey, I'm really glad that you guys are back, and I'm gonna find it real quick so I can just edit this in here. Uh, okay. Uh, yeah. So we got a message from David Arrington who did host, I don't know if he still hosts the Helix Reviews podcast.
Um, unfortunately I've kind of fallen off on a lot of shows that I used to listen to. But, uh, yeah, uh, David Arrington messaged us and he was just like, Hey, um, I'm glad that, uh, you know, you guys are back. That's exciting. Looking forward to, uh, you know, more episodes from you guys. So, uh, yeah, it's, it's really cool. And it's been nice to see some interaction like from Ben Avery and some other people that we used to hang out with.
And I think we're gonna try our best to make 2024 a time when we can actually meet up with Ben Deb, or not Ben Devona, you know, let's try Ben Devona first instead of Ben Avery. We've known him - Longer. I can guarantee you he's not listening to this, I'm sure. - No, uh, but I think we'd like to get with Ben Avery and have a conversation, watch a movie, something. 'cause that's been 10 years in the making, so I'll quit rambling.
- Well, we love you guys. And do we have a sign off like an a real sign off ? No. See, I've been listening to too much, uh, pod Meets World because I almost said pod dismissed. . Wait, that's not us. - No, I don't, I don't think that we have anything. I think we had something. And I was like, I don't think that, that sounds very family friendly. - Well, we, maybe I'm just a part. We, we were saying bye to Craig. To Craig, but, but we're not talking to Craig right now. Craig's
- Not here. So, uh, - Well, why don't you listeners tell us how should we sign off? Kick this. We want this to become an interactive podcast, so we want your feedback. Yeah. - Uh, bye. Library guy. - . - We'll talk to you guys in the next episode. - All right. Peace out. Bye.
