- Hey, welcome to Geek This. My name is Dave Clements and David Hunt's with me. - I'm David Hunt. Hey everybody. Hey, Dave. - So we've got, uh, we're gonna try and keep this one a little bit shorter, uh, because we have previously talked about X-Men 97. We talked about the first two episodes, a couple episodes back. So we're gonna kind of do kind of a, a, uh, kind of a review of the whole first season and give you our thoughts and all that jazz.
But first you've been geeking out about anything this week, David. - Um, so, uh, in a little bit of spare time that I've had, um, I've just been playing a lot of, well, not a lot of, but a little bit of, um, the Final Fantasy Seven Rebirth. - Nice. How's that going? - So, uh, uh, not bad. I think I'm about halfway through. Yeah. Just kind of taking my time with it. It's a long game. Um, . Um, but I'm, I'm enjoying it. You know, it's a nice continuation of, of the, um,
oh, what was the first one called? Crisis - Core? No, that, that's a different game. - No, that, oh, okay. That was - The pretty cool, - Well, that, the, like the, the new version of Final Vanity C seven . Anyway, um, I almost said Rema. I said No, it's a complete - . - Anyway, anyway, let's see if I can, I bet you - Could one more time. You could. It'll just be the title of the episode anyway, - Anyway. No, uh, it's a good game. Um, there are a lot of mini games in it. Uh, remake,
that's the word I was looking for. Wow. I don't know why - It's on that. I do that all the time. I think it's the getting old thing, - . - Yeah. That'll do it. Yes. And, and having kids, kids take up all your mind space. But yeah, I, uh, I like it. There's a lot of mini games that can be kind of annoying, but um, you know, then when you finally beat the mini game, you feel a sense of accomplishment, even though like, it's like you just beat a small, little tiny mini game inside of a game.
It's like, yeah, I did it. - That's funny. I like it. Is that why it's taking you so long to actually beat the game? Maybe. - Probably if I, if I just like, you know, push through, I could probably get through a lot faster. But I'm a, I'm a completionist, so I like to do everything. Um, and then games, any sort of RPG when you're completionist, it makes it a much, much longer game than it needs to be. . - Yeah. I am not a completionist, as everybody should know now.
I've started hundreds of games and finished tens of games. - Did you ever, um, did you finish the God of War sequel? - Uh, the 2018, was it 2018? No, 2016. - So not the, so the sequel. I've never played Rag. - I have not picked it up yet. No. Did you ever play that? I know there's a PS four version, but I don't remember the last time I touched my PS four. I - You gotta play it. Really. - I love the first one. That's probably something that we should talk about.
'cause I don't think we have, because I'd probably have to replay that one too. 'cause I did finish that one. I did play that to the end, and I didn't a hundred percent it, but I finished it. - Yeah. And Rag Rock has, uh, nice Thor in it. And Thor's one of my favorite characters in Mythology. Um, so . Anyway, that's a, anyway, that's another game. And this isn't the, the video game episode. Not - Yet. . Oh, funny. - What about you? What have you been thinking?
- Um, well, so I, a few episodes ago I was talking about, uh, 21 Pilots, and they were releasing a new album. As we record this, and hopefully the day that this episode actually comes out, they, uh, their new album Clancy is coming out, which I'm super excited for. I haven't been this excited for an album release since I was like, I don't 20 so a long time. Uh, but I'm pretty stoked about that.
They've been, they've released, uh, today as we're recording, they've released a new single, it's the last single before the full album comes out. And then on Friday they are dropping, uh, a video, an actual music video for every single song on the album. So there will be a total of 13 videos. Wow. Uh, for this album. Uh, so there's that, which I don't want to geek out too much about that, but it's, it's been kind of like top shelf geeking out for me.
Um, and kind of like the other, the other one that I've been geeking out about, uh, have you ever heard of the Fall of the House of Usher? That's a story written by Edgar Allen Poe. Um, I've heard of it. One of my favorite horror, I don't, directors, writers, creative people, uh, Mike Flanagan, he, he did a, like, a little mini series for Netflix. And so I started watching that and just - See, that's actually what I had heard of. I didn't realize it was a, a po Yeah.
- So I, I had started watching that. Not that I need like, to know anything about the story or anything. The show's been pretty good. Uh, definitely mature audiences. But, uh, I just by happenstance happened to, I picked up a book from Libby, the, the library app called, hold on, I gotta pull it up in front of me because I don't look at what the title is. I just go, I'm going to Libby, I'm playing the book 'cause I'm listening to it. Um, it is called What Moves the Dead by T Kingfisher.
It is kind of a retelling of that story. So it's been interesting to, to listen to that book and then, you know, watch an episode of this show, which is like a modern retelling of that story. So, uh, it's like, I don't know. I found it very, I about knocked something over. Uh, yeah. I've, I found it very, very intriguing and interesting and haunting. Um, I should probably stick with either the book or the show at one time, but, you know, when I go to bed, I'm listening to the book.
If I'm up in my office working, sometimes I have it playing. But yeah, those are kind of the things that have my attention right now. - Yeah. I, I've, uh, yeah, I'd heard of the, the miniseries, um, but I've, I've never dove into that, so maybe I'll have to check that out. - Yeah. I mean, if you like horror, and I think the thing that I like about this horror is it's not, it's not really in your face, at least not yet. Uh, it's, it's haunting.
There's some really good scenes, um, between two characters that are, are pretty spooky. So, um, yeah, if you ever get around to it, I think it's the second or third episode. Uh, it is a little traumatizing. I, I was not expecting where it was gonna go, but, uh, it definitely got, it hooks in me. So I'll definitely be watching that, finishing it. - So, um, are you ready to move on to our main topic - Today, Dave - ? Main topic? Topic? Topic, topic, topic.
- Uh, yeah, we are, uh, as I said at the top of the show, we are gonna talk about X-Men 97. Uh, really just kind of give you a rundown of season one, give you our opinions, all that good stuff. Um, we talked about the first two episodes, a couple episodes back. So go back, listen to those and, you know, maybe, maybe juxtapose the two and see if, if things changed between then and now. I'm gonna say probably not, but, uh, yeah, like, um, I don't know exactly where you want to start with this.
I feel like an overall impression is probably best. Um, so what did you think of this whole first season? - I loved it. Um, this was one of the first shows in a while that for me was really like appointment television, where like, every week I was looking forward to the next episode. I'm like, okay, oh, there a new episode. Nice dropped. I need to watch it. And it wasn't like a, oh yeah, I'll get around to that when I have the time. It's like, no, that, that came out. I wanna watch it.
Um, because I was always, you know, intrigued about Mm-Hmm. What was going to happen next. Uh, they really had me on the edge of my seat, especially when it came to like yeah, the last three episodes. Um, 'cause with the three part finale Yeah, - I, I felt the same way. I, I wish I would have watched it as it was coming out. I, it kind of, it had my attention for those first couple episodes. And then I, I think I, I got about halfway through and as always got distracted watching something else.
And then we were talking about, Hey, you know, we, we need to talk about this for the show. And I was like, oh, yeah, I gotta go back and watch everything. And so, uh, over the course of a couple of days I finished watching it. But I would recommend that you don't just binge binge watch because like, once, like as you start getting closer to the end of the, the season, uh, the drama and action and everything just ramps way up.
And I was a little overwhelmed watching those last three episodes just back to back to back. And I was like, I need a breather. . - Yeah. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat. Um, and if you haven't watched it, you know, we're about ready to jump into some heavy spoilers. Um, so yeah, this is the, your your point of no return.
Yeah. Um, that last episode where, uh, or actually it might have been the second to last episode where it was the, so it was the end of the second to last episode going into the finale when Magneto so rips out Logan's - Yeah. Second to last episode at - Manum. - Mm-Hmm. . - Oh man. That moment, like, like I, I know that that happens in the comics. Um, but just seeing it on screen, like , I, I audibly like, went like, ah, - Uh, yeah. - It was just such a - Cool moment. Yeah.
So, man, I, again, I wish I would've stayed on top of it because I saw a screenshot of that no context. And I'm like, what the crap? And this is like, as I'm starting to catch up and I'm like, when does this happen? So I'm like waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting. And then I get to that episode and I'm like, that's where it's at. Uh, yeah, there was, there was a lot. Um, I, I, here's the thing. I haven't watched the original run of that show since I was little.
Mm-Hmm. . So I don't remember how dramatic and soap opera e it was my understanding is it, it, you know, um, it was back then the same as it is now. Um, but good god, maybe that's why I have some trauma and, uh, whatever kind of issues that I have, because this, this season was intense. I was, I was expecting just kind of a trip down nostalgia lane, and I felt like I got gut punched multiple times. Um, when storm leaves. Mm-Hmm. , you're like, well that sucks.
And then you find out that, uh, gene isn't actually Gene, uh, of course, of course. How do you think Scott feels? That was crazy. Scott. Like, , you've been with another woman all along Well - And well, and they're not quite sure when the switch happened. . So they don't know, like, okay, when was he with the original Gene and when did it switch? The only thing that he knows is that, uh, Madeline is the biological mother of his child. - Yeah. - But besides that, like, - That's scary.
- Who - Knows? Um, and then I will say probably most soul crushing of all was Gambits death. I did not see that coming. Gambit was like my favorite. I remember being on the playground and like, I brought a deck of cards to school with me because I thought I was just so cool. . And I would, I would throw cards, you know, out on the playground. Ugh. - I always wanted one of those jackets Yeah. That he has. Yeah. One of those like trench coats, just because he was the coolest gambit was so cool.
Like, I know a lot of people say that Wolverine was like the main guy for X-Men, but for me, gambit. Yeah. Gambit was, - Well, he had a great girlfriend too, so it was like, you can be the coolest X-Men or X Man with a coolest accent and you have the coolest girlfriend. That's kind of how it was as a kid. - Then my wife is like, oh, he can throw cards. That's kind of cool. I was like, no, it's . That's not his power. His power is not throwing cards. - Yeah. It's making stuff blow up. Come on.
Yeah. This, this show. - Uh, but looking forward to the, so the, the ending of it, the like, sort of like preview for Mm-Hmm. the next season. Not really preview, but like the Yeah. The Stinger at the end. So next season is going to go into Apocalypse. - Yeah. - And did you watch, did you see like the after quote after credits? Yeah. Scene with - Apocalypse, which had me a little confused as I was doing some research.
'cause I was like, I feel like I remember Apocalypse showing up in the original, um, the original series. And he did, I think they defeated him at one point. So I'm curious how this is all gonna work out and he's coming back, or - Yeah. I, I haven't watched the original, the full original series in a long time. So I think in between seasons one and two, I'm going to try to sit down and watch at least. - Yeah. - Some of the main parts, - I think there's like 78 episodes, if I'm not mistaken.
So - Yeah. So I don't, I don't know if I have time to watch all of it beforehand. 'cause it, I'm pretty sure there's pretty deep in production. - Yeah. Actually, actually I saw that they are talking about maybe season two being released by the end of this year. So - Yeah. So that's not a long - Time. No, no. Considering we're halfway through the year, so - To get through that. - Yeah. Yeah. Um, yeah.
And there's, um, I, one thing I did want to touch on, and I wish I knew more about it, but I guess like the week or a few days before the show premiered, like their head writer got fired from Marvel, um, which it doesn't seem like it affected the, the show at all. Show is still fantastic. Um, - Well, the, the show was right already in the can. Right. Like it was done. Um, and I guess he, season two was pretty much done. Oh, okay. Okay. Like the writing of it.
Um, so season two should be pretty solid. Um, but going forward from there, it'll be interesting to see what changes, you know, if you can see, oh, this is definitely different Yeah. Than the first two seasons. - Yeah, I am, um, I'm definitely excited for season two. Um, I still, - I think - No, you go right ahead. - Sorry, go ahead. I was just gonna say, I think that Gambit will be back as one of the, um, apocalypses Apocalypses, - Yeah's a his Horseman.
Yeah. That's like a great idea. Quite possibly. Interesting. I like that idea. - Because there's no way they just kill off Gambit. Right. And he's gone - Forever. Forever. Right. I wouldn't, I wouldn't think so. Um, yeah, that's a great idea. I didn't think about that at all. . Um, we also got some really good cameos, uh, from other Marvel characters. And again, not watching the original, I don't remember that happening, but what we saw, Spider-Man, captain America, Daredevil, black Panther,
several other like Marvel related characters. Yeah. - Ironman, iron Man. - Um, uh, - Um, we saw Morph. Yeah. - And Richards, um, - Yeah, more Smash. - And we saw Cloak and Dagger. So I, I feel like this is them Hint, like one it's fan service, uh, which is great. I like fan service. 'cause this, this wasn't overdone. They didn't do it to a point where it didn't necessarily make sense. Um Mm-Hmm.
But it also makes me think that they are discussing what other properties can we do this with, you know, whether that's picking up, you know, Spider-Man, wherever it left off or something like that. I'm, I don't know. I love, that's, that's the thing though. I love this animation style because it's, it's what I would consider like retro future. Like, it definitely has some of that aesthetic from the nineties, but it's definitely updated, more modernized.
Um, 'cause if you just look at 'em side by side, like you can tell that they were hand drawing every frame versus now they're probably using, you know, computer animation and stuff like that, which, um, makes everything a little bit more fluid. But yeah, this, this show got me excited for whatever's coming next through Marvel animation.
- And the, the cool thing about seeing all those cameos is during the moments where we saw most of 'em, especially in the last few episodes when they were, most of 'em were popping up. Um, the reason that they were there was showing that, okay, this event that's happening to the X-Men, it's affecting Right. Everyone in this world, you know? And it makes it feel like a, like a real, it makes it feel Mm-Hmm.
feel more whole, where it's like, okay, if these other superheroes, if they were, if they were actually in this universe, then um, this would actually be affecting their lives as well. Yeah. And it, it feels, makes it feel more like the comic books where you see the little connections here and there versus, um, sometimes in the MCU you'll see, you know, some, like a superhero have this huge thing that's happening and then, and the next, and in the next movie, it just doesn't affect anyone else.
Yeah. Like, okay, so in the Eternals there's a giant, a a giant robot, like Yeah. Sticking up from the ocean, but nobody - Mentions it. Yeah. Um, yeah, I don't like, I, I will say like, not every episode was a banger, you know? Um, but - What was your least favorite episode? - Uh, boy, that's a good question. It has to be an earlier episode probably because I wasn't really putting all the pieces together. Uh, I don't know that I could name one right off the top of my head. Could you?
- I could. - Okay. - I know exactly which one, . So if you had to cut one episode, uh, it would have to be the, the Jubilee Mojo. Oh yeah. Episode. - Yeah. That makes sense. - It not that it was a bad episode per se, it just, it wasn't needed. Yeah. It felt like extra, you know, like padding. Yeah. It, it did help develop, you know, the relationship, um, between, um, Jubilee and what's his name? I space, - Um, . I'm struggling too. Uh, I dunno the that one. That one I can't remember. Yeah.
- The new guy. You know, sun Spot . - Yeah. Yeah. I was like, that's it's Sun something, sun . Uh, yeah. Yeah. Sunspot. That's a great edit point right there. - Yeah. It helped, it helped, uh, develop their relationship. But besides that, it really didn't do much for the story overall.
- Yeah. Um, I also love that, like, in those last few episodes, uh, well, specifically I think it's the last, I think it's the last episode, uh, where, um, Xavier is in Magneto's mind and he's kind of rehabilitating him through his mind. I, I thought that was pretty clever. 'cause like, that is stuff that you've seen in the movies and it's in the comics.
And I mean, it's not abnormal, but, uh, you know, for, for Professor X to like come back, uh, he's never really been my favorite X-Men character. It's just kind of like he's there to facilitate. But I think, I think Scott hasn't handled, you know, until different comic series where he just loses his mind. But, um, - Right. - Yeah. I don't know. Like, some of that stuff was maybe not my, my favorite, like the Shia, like, I guess I get it. But that was kind of like some of my least favorite stuff.
But I did like the fact that he, you know, when he came back, he was still being that friend to, uh, Magnus or Magneto. Uh, you know, I, I love that they returned to that bond, that they're not just mortal enemies, but they're, they're this weird relationship of, you know, old longtime friends, but yet longtime enemies at the same time. I've always enjoyed that dynamic. - Yeah. And it'll be interesting to see where they go with it. Mm-Hmm. going forward.
Um, 'cause they kind of, kind of left it in like limbo at the end where, so like you're, you're seeing magneto sort of turn like bad again. Right. But you still see that that bond between Xavier, like with Xavier helping hi, helping Magneto get back outside of his own mind. Yeah. - Y you know, one thing, so I liked the introduction of Mr. Sinister. Uh, it's a character I'm not familiar with. Mm-Hmm. like at all.
I just felt like once we got into the end game with Bastion, there really wasn't any reason for him to be there. Like, I, I don't feel like they explained that very well. Um, - He was just sort of there as a red herring. Yeah. Pretty much. You know, like, 'cause you see him like towards the beginning of the season, you're like, oh, he's gonna be the big bad. Like, he, he's gonna be the big bad of the season . It's like, nope, not - Really.
Just kidding. I, that was a little bit of a bummer to me because I would've liked to see a little bit more of that character developed, uh, because I'm not familiar with him. And I love, I love meeting new characters like more, again, another character that was underutilized, but I felt could have brought a little bit more story-wise, uh, especially with Mr. Sinister because in the credits they, they, they show them together, you know?
So, I don't know. I, I don't really have a ton of gripes, but I have a few, you know. - Yeah. Um, it's definitely not like, - Like - Perfect, like no notes. But, um, it's, it's better than, I mean, I was expect, I had pretty high expectations, um, but it was still better than I, yeah. - I didn't really know what to think. Like I remember when it was announced and I was just kind of like, that's cool from a nostalgia point of view, but is it gonna be good?
And now I'm like, okay, let's get season two here tomorrow so I can watch it. And what other Marvel animation stuff are we getting down the road that is not what if I love what if, but I'm worried that it's gonna suffer the same fa as a lot of the other MCU if we don't start to pump the brakes a little bit. - Yeah. Yeah. The first season of what if was pretty strong, the second season was not quite as good. Um, so hopefully it doesn't continue that trend. Yeah.
- I, I hope not. But, um, that's for, that's for another episode. Um, whenever, what if season three comes out? We'll, we'll definitely talk about it. Um, do you have any other thoughts on X-Men 97? - I don't think so. Um, just really looking forward to the, the future of it. Um, you know, with this being sort of a dead year Mm-Hmm. for the MCU, you know, we have, uh, Deadpool and Wolverine coming out later this year, and then, um, I think later this year is aga so all along.
Um, but that might be it. I, I, if I'm thinking - Correctly, yeah. I, - I can't think of anything else. Yeah, I think you're right. Coming - Out, um, - Um, we had Loki season two, so I think that might have been it for the MCU for this year. So it's been kind of a slower year. Um, so it was nice to have this, you know, sitting in the middle here for sure. Um, to be able to sort of have its own space. Yeah.
- Yeah. Um, I have heard, like they have talked about how they do wanna pump the brakes a little bit on, uh, the MCU. I've heard that at least on the Marvel television side, uh, that they're going to try and not make everything so interconnected and require everybody to watch everything before jumping into a show, which is smart. Uh, you know, I love things being interconnected, but I love the idea more of things being connected, uh, just in small ways.
You know, kind of like you were talking about, um, with X-Men 97, we get other superhero appearances and you see that they're affected by what's going on. It would be cool that, you know, if we get an animated Ironman or a new Spider-Man show that, I don't know, maybe it references this X-Men event or something like that, but it doesn't have to cater to it. You know, spidey can do what he's gonna do and move on. Uh, and then we can just kind of see some little overlapping areas.
Uh, I think that would be really the best way to go. Um, and I, I've said it before, but I think for me, my feeling is that Deadpool and Wolverine are, um, or is it's, it's gonna do something with the way that the MCU is currently set up. Um, I don't know what, but I feel like it's gonna have some effect just based off of what the trailers say and show, which I'm, I'm happy with.
- Yeah. Um, I'm really excited for Deadpool, uh, because while I think it's going to be definitely it's own thing, you know, it's, it's an r-rated movie, um, sort of having, having it set in the middle between, you know, the end of the Mm-Hmm. , the Fox films and the beginning of those moving into the, the MCU. Um, I'm looking forward to see how they use this as that transition while also being true to a, a fun depo film.
- Um, - I'm assuming it has to be a really good script because I feel like that's the only way they could have talked Hug - Jackson to coming back. That's, that's my opinion too. Um, 'cause I mean, he was done when, when Logan was done, he was done. Uh, and I, I don't think he's a liar. You know, I, I think he was legitimately done, but the money probably talked Mm-Hmm. , but also having a really good script that made sense to bring him back.
It, that had to happen. But when we, when July gets here, we'll definitely be covering that movie. Um, real quick, we do have some other, I just, some things I wanted to mention, like, uh, we are getting a Spider-Man Noir Live action something, I think it's a movie over on Amazon Prime next year or the year after. It is weird because Nick's gonna be in, - Was such a random Yeah. Drop. Like, when I, when I heard that announcement, it just kind of took me by surprise.
Like, I'm I'll watch it. Yeah, sure. Like, it sounds neat because I liked that character in Yeah. In the Spider Burst movies, but a lot a live action one like that. That's the part that really like - Yeah, that's what I thought too is like, that is, that is really weird. Uh, we also got, um, we got to see our, our first look at, uh, what's his name? David Corin Sweat. Is that ? Is that how you pronounce his name? Uh, Superman. Um, - Yeah. Oh, in the, the poster with him. Yeah.
Putting his boots on. Yeah. - I, that, that poster says a lot where it's like, I'll be back Lois. Don't you worry. I don't know. There's a lot to read into that poster. Right. Uh, but I'm excited. Like, I don't know. I'm looking forward to James Gunn and what he has going on for, uh, the new DC Eeu. Uh, I know some people are a little nervous about it. I don't know. I, I'm, I'm looking forward to it.
We don't know a lot, but, um, I might actually be excited for a Spider or a Superman movie for once. - Yeah. We'll see. I'll wait until we - Get a trailer. - Know more about it. I don't want to get excited about a Superman movie just for it to let me doubt. Hey, - The way I look at it is I already have really low expectations for Superman movies. . - Yeah. - I mean, I, I was one of the people who like, I liked Mm-Hmm. Man of Steel quite a bit.
Um, and then the DCEU, um, yeah, it really overall just like the, their, like their phase one wasn't bad, you know, with, um, like Man of Steel and Aquaman and Wonder Woman, their first films Mm-Hmm. were all pretty good. And then after that, it was - No Bueno, - Not great . - Uh, yeah, I just kind of wanted to, to bring those things up 'cause uh, we, we've been talking a lot about Marvel since we brought the show back. Uh, but we are equal opportunity, uh, haters and lovers around here.
So, uh, it's just something good has to come out from DC uh, that's worth talking about or something terrible has to come out that's worth talking about. I am not talking about, uh, black Adam though. I, that movie was horrendous - and there's always worse. - Yeah. - You know, - So, - I mean, Marvel has, its, it's true. Has it fair share of - It's true. I think I'm - Bad films. I mean, just look at the, the look at the Spider verse. Yeah. You know, the, the Sony Venom not, not into the - Yeah.
The Venom is more, more accurate. - Sony, yeah. - Venom. I still have not watched Madame Web because we have like the lowest tier of Netflix and it's on Netflix, but it's locked. And I'm like, it's not worth upgrading to watch that movie for me. . Wait. Yes. It's a lot.
So, uh, for those of you who don't know this, if you are on the lowest tiered plan for, uh, Netflix, I think it's like $7 a month, I think, uh, you get ads, but then the, uh, when content drops, depending on what it is, they will lock it. Because due to like streaming rights and things like that, you have to upgrade and yeah. So it's locked. I can't watch it because apparently it's such a good movie that I have to pay more for it.
And I said no, I would not pay a nickel more per month just to watch that movie. Yeah. - Wow. How long has it been like that? - Uh, it's been like that time hearing of this. I got Netflix a couple months ago. 'cause I would say we've had it two, two months now. Yeah. - Oh wow. Yeah. Yeah. I had no idea. - I was like, I can deal with ads. - Huh? Like, I knew that there was like Right. I knew there was an ad version, but I had no idea that they locked - Certain content.
Yeah. It's, it's weird. I, so Madame Webb came out and I saw it was locked 'cause I was like, oh, we can finally talk about it on the show. 'cause I didn't go see it. Um, but that is not the case. And there are a couple other movies that came out that I was like, Ooh, I can't wait to watch this. And they were locked too. So now, you know, - Well maybe with Madame Webb, we wait until the end of the year after the last Venom movie and Craven come out.
