Transcript

This is Gary and Shannon, and you're listening to KFI AM six forty, the Gary and Shannon Show on demand on the iHeartRadio app. In nineteen eighty three, I was three years old. Well, you didn't know anything. I was living my best life. Well listen, I'm lucky. My wife got on an airplane today, zero problem. But there are tens of thousands of people who did not got on airplanes, at least not yet today because of this massive outage, this global IT outage link to CrowdStrike, software,

healthcare, business, transportation. And I saw broadcasters thrown in there. I figured that out yet. Mark Saltzman, of course, is our go to guy for everything IT and tech, and Mark, what do you know? Well, I heard Biden tripped over a power cable. Sorry, couldn't resist. Yeah, this was take the Bully's down. Literally, poor got COVID. He doesn't know where he is. Oh my gosh. Anyways, yea, his grandson to him the reboot reboot. Did you try? Did you

try to unplug and plug it back in again? No? Not that one. Uh yes, so there's no laughing matter. Apparently crowds strike. This has got to be what they're saying. Is the largest global IT outage in history, which is we're not quite out of the woods yet, but a lot of it was fixed already. So CrowdStrike is a company based in Austin.

They're a cybersecurity company that is used by more than half of the world's Fortune five hundred companies, as well as government agencies that run Microsoft computers. And so this was a software glitch. It was an update that went wrong. It's they're what's called Falcon Sensor software that had a glitch in the update process, which again controls all of these retailers. As you mentioned, Gary

and Shannon, the these banks, McDonald's shutdown in Japan. Sky News went off the year in the UK. What happened was they saw a blue screen of death. Remember that, like it's Windows ninety five all over again. I know, Shannon, you were saying, it's not nineteen eighty three was a nicer time, but nobody misses that blue screen of death. Ten years later, well here we are, so yeah. So as a result, now the domino effect is that there are thousands and thousands of people who fly

American United in Delta whose flights were either canceled or delayed. And now you know, just picking up the pieces. So it's gonna be a while. And some companies are told their computers have been or will be fixed automatically. Others require a manual update to do it. Not fun, but just shows our vulnerability in the digital age, like how reliant we are on this and how interconnected we are internationally. I mean, this was not an America's centric

thing. Yeah, people in New Zealand and Australia couldn't take money out of their bank account like the ATMs as I mentioned McDonald's and take They couldn't process payments, so they shut their doors. The London Stock Exchange had disruptions. Flight flights across Europe were frozen as well. So this this is a huge Yeah, we're all interconnected. And again you know, so one number one,

there should be safeguards in place for this not to happen. Again, it's called redundancies where you have more than one or more than a dozen servers around the world that can offset any issues that's detected on one or two of them, and just and so you're none the wiser. It's just all happening in the background. And secondly, you know, when it comes to cyber warfare, right, I mean, if it's that easy, you know, for something like this to happen. You know, these nefarious nations out there

are they're they're taking notice. They know that this is in their arsenal. Should they want to do something? Yeah, they were quick to say it was not a security incident or cyber attack. But what what are we more susceptible to just ineptitude and failure when it comes to a technical issue or cyber

attach, security incident? Yeah, all the above. You know, we're just so reliant on you know, whether it's your telcom company or again, banks, retail stores, media companies like TV and radio networks, airlines were all connected. It's all run by computers. A lot of it is automated. But you would think that having redundancies built in so that you know, you've got those safeguards in place, coupled with AI, maybe that can help

us predict something is going to happen. So, for example, CrowdStrike knows there's a massive software update that's coming, right, they know that this Falcon sensor software needs an update, you know, on early Friday morning of July the nineteenth. Just make sure using artificial intelligence to just dot all the i's and cross the t's to make sure that it's going to be smooth and there's

no impact on anything. And if there is, then just mitigate that by by having other servers handle the you know, at the risk of sounding too geeky, there's always an answer, but there we are more vulnerable, is the bottom line, vulnerable as the ear is vulnerable to a bleeding attack. Yes, a lot of blood, a lot of blood. Mark, Thank you for taking time for us on a Friday. It's nice to talk to you. Likewise, Thanks everybody, and I hope your wife gets home,

your partner gets home smoothly, well, she will be great. Thank you. All right. Follow Mark on Twitter MRC Underscore Saltsman and we'll bring you updates as far as we know in terms of what's the latest on all this. We did find out that some emergency call systems, like nine to one to one systems in at least three states were hit. Oregon is one of

them. Hospitals, airports, public safety, and emergency management agencies had major effects up there, and the La County Superior Court System said they are experiencing system wide connectivity issues. Well, they don't even work anymore. Right wells to court in La County. They said any business where people were set to appear remotely on Friday that's today would be rescheduled, according to the La County Superior Courts. Are we even on the air? Hello? Hello, Gary

and Shannon will continue? Maybe I don't know. Ul Cogan took the stage last night and they tried to kill the next president of the United States. Enough was enough? Yeh sad Lohmendia run wild brother h trapamania r again? What trapamania? Nke la right again? He looks the same is when I was six years old, Like, wow, what does whole Colgan do? What is his skincare routine? I don't know about this skid, but the shoulders and the everything looks nineteen eighty six. Yeah, his his was a

fun speech. I'll tell you that. I had fun watching his speech. I missed that one. I was going back and forth between the convention and the Real Housewives of Orange County. Similar experiences with both of them. Uh you mean because they were the same thing. This ridiculousness that part of it. Yes, So I'll a bunch of old people acting like there on spring break at South Padre Island. There was a I went into last night hopeful. I think I said it yesterday. I think that Trump had an opportunity

to really be different last night. And but my fear was he was just going to succumb to the moment. He was going to succumb to the crowd. He was going to succumb to his normal patterns and habits of speaking off, you know, off the cuff. I was in it for the first few minutes when he said, listen, I'm gonna tell you the story about what happened on Saturday, But I'm only gonna tell it once because I don't like that. As you already know, the assassin's bullet came within a quarter

of an inch of taking my life. So many people have asked me what happened, tell us what happened, please, And therefore I I'll tell you exactly what happened, and you'll never hear it from me a second time because it's actually too painful to tell. There's no way he does not talk about this again. Oh he will, because he's going to be asked about He's

going to have a book. For books. He talked about the moments where the Secret servi the Secret Service had put him on the ground, covered him, and he thanked the agents by the way for their quick reactions to what was going on, and said that he had to show the people who all thought he died, that he was okay. This beautiful crowd they didn't want to leave me. They knew I was in trouble, wanted to do something

to let him know I was okay. I raised my right arm, looked at the thousands and thousands of people that were breathlessly waiting, and started shouting fight, fight, fight, Okay, now this again. This. I'm still in it because I watched it. I saw what happened. We've all seen the video multiple times. Let no crisis go unused. Every speaker that I've seen at this convention has gone through blow by blow what happened on Saturday. Yeah, and I think it's more moving, which is fine. I

think it's more moving when he says it. But it didn't take long for him to lose me, and I mean like quickly, yeah, me too. It went on for too long. Gary, She's absolutely correct. My husband and I thought that while we were watching it last night, we thought, I wonder how much Metallica is making off of this, Right now we were talking about the dance video also that the party put together and showed at the convention. I'd love to see you tube left footed assn dance. So

the dude seventy eight years old kind of a break. We're actually really good dancers. It was on display in Philadelphia at that gay bar. Wait have prop me up, Hey, Gary and Shannon. This is Rick and Clark Show Tennessee. And I just wanted to let you know. I watched the R and C last night and I was pretty excited about what Trump was saying. He never lost me or anything. I was interested in every point he was making because I wanted to know what he was going to be standing for.

And even only start out bostile, he really ended up strong. And then I couldn't help but think that Biden would have made it through about five minutes. I agree with that, but what is there was nothing new? That's also part of it is ninety minutes. I could I could stand ninety minutes if there was anything new. What I wanted him to do was focus.

I thought it would have gone a long way. And who cares what I think, but I think it would have gone a long way if he didn't talk about himself as much and focused on things like grocery prices up fifty four percent, that needed more time, that needed four paragraphs, that didn't need just one half of a sentence, that needed a chunk of that speech, because that is what our experience is. That rings true for me. I do the grocery shopping. I see how crazy it is out there to

buy chicken, well, chicken's like eighteen dollars. What are we doing? One of the things that I thought of while he was doing that was could he could he do that same message? Right, let's assume that. Could he talk about his plans for the future, his plans to change things in the country, put us on the right path, whatever terms he wants to

use. Could he do that without mentioning Joe Biden? Because and I don't know, listen, people are going to say it's Joe Biden's fault, and that's fine, okay, But could you do it without mentioning your opponent and just say, listen, we're all in this together, We're all Americans. And he did. He did say that, and he talked about the unity being an important aspect moving forward, and that basically the way We're going to make sure that everybody is taken care of. Is through our success that that

that message I think rings true for me. But the idea that you have to do it by denigrating the other guy. This was an opportunity, I think for him to rise above what has become a trope when it comes to politics. Why would do you expect him to rise above? Because everybody said that this was going to be a new Donald Trump, that it was going to be a different that what we saw on Saturday. I mean, and that's it was a more subdued to Donald Trump, very much so. But

it's the same guy. You don't change your stripes that far into life. This was where and it was early on again I was I was pretty riveted by his first hand account of what was going on on Saturday. But then he went off script. They saw the blood and thought, actually most did that I was dead. They know it was a shot to the head. They saw the blood and there's an interesting statistic. The ears or the bloody is part if something happens with the years, they bleed more than any other

part. He switched back to the house and the doctors told me that, I said, why is this so much blood, he said, it's the years they bleed more. So we learned something, but they just we learned something. That was a part where I was like, well, and it was funny how I think. Elix Michaelson on Fox eleven was there and he

had a view of the teleprompter. There was also Phil Maddingly I believe for CNN, talked about they he had a view of the teleprompter while Trump was speaking, and both of them referred to how many times he went off script. Again, we know that, we know that's how he does it, but he did not need to go for ninety minutes. Gary, What you are something else? Thank you? You're very predictable too. Oh you want to be a boy? What but you not? Oh? I wanted he is? Oh you had me, Oh you had me? Oh you lost

me. You're such a chick. That's a chick thing. Wow, you want to be a boy? Are you freaking Peter Pan? Why can't I want something better out of a politician? What I want? Yeah? The bar is very low, That's what I want. I was gonna say, we are at a peak political disarray or not? Maybe you guys, we are in for a ride. I mean, we haven't even gotten to the report that came out yesterday that Biden has already agreed to step down out of the campaign. I don't think he gives up the office, but he gives

up the campaign. All right? When does that hit? What does that look like? And also who's polling better? When it comes to beating Donald Trump? There is a Democrat that is polling to beat Donald Trump. Should he be the candidate? Dean Phillips, No, I don't know, Saninfarion and Edy Gary, Hey, it's right, yes, we got nothing you do gonna get Yeah, just kidding. I don't even drink. But anyways, love you guys, man love looking for for this show. I'm looking

for for swamp. Watch watch what watch the extended version of it? We love you, Yeah, we do. It's feedback Friday. There is a widespread technology outage that hit the world overnight our time. Huge shout out to Will Cole Schreiber who nailed it. When it comes to lax, always go to the arrivals, never go to the departures. That is key. And if you can go to burbanks Oli Ria, here's the order of the way you should attack. Leaving from lax. Yeah, go to the arrivals or

go to a different airport exactly. Healthcare staff and patients also have been documenting the chaos inside some hospitals. There was a TikTok video this woman, a woman in a breathing mask, said that her electronic medical records couldn't be accessed. She wasn't able to get the correct medications. Staff were heard shouting panicked voices. The camera pans to a computer that's been knocked offline and showed that

blue screen of death that Mark Saltzman referred to. A nurse here in California was detailing how staff have had to revert to pen and paper using iPhones to treat patients prescribe drugs. My wife works at a hospital. She got a message on her phone overnight which was basically, here's how we're going to do it, because we don't know if our computer systems are going to last or what they're going to look like once you get in on your shift. She

didn't have to go to work today, thankfully. But we'll talk a little bit more about President Biden here, But I wanted to get through some of these comments real quickly on former President Trump's speech last night at the RNC Gary. Yeah, you're right that we've all heard this stuff before from Trump.

But the reason that he's being redundant and there's a lot of people that really didn't tune into him or listen to him before this, so he's got quite a few new listeners and the newer audience that he's reiterating some of the things they probably did not here in the past. So I think that was the

intent behind, you know, the redundancy. And I will say this, Listen, we do this as part of our job, so we probably ingest speeches and conventions and politics and stuff like that more than the average person. So that's why I said he didn't say anything new. I've at least heard it all before, so I'll at least concede that there are people who may have tuned in last night who don't. They don't hear him at the rallies, they don't hear the speeches that he gives on a regular basis, so

maybe that some of that was new to them. But ninety minutes come on. And also the kissing of the helmet, can we talk about that? Well, that was over the top. I don't know how you do that well, I mean I thought about that, I thought about you didn't talk a better way to do it. But yeah, not kissing the weird helmet with the uniform on the stage. Just pay tribute to the man's life and

point to it. I mean acknowledge that the that the it's there. He lost his life selflessly acting as a human shield to protect them from flying. But let's see what right over the top of them and was hit. A fine man he was. I gotta tell you that was a powerful image to see that on the stage today. By the way, is when the big funeral is for Corey Competori the compare it or I think he's how you say his name, the firefighter who was killed at that rally. So a couple

other comments, Hey, Gary and Channon. I was also listening to the RNC last night and I'm a moderate, so I'm listening to to see what Trump has to say and just can't I can't help it. This guy is embellishing everything he is the world. That's what he does best. Salesman, literally hands down, one of the best salesmens. Now what he does and what he says is totally different. But you know, between him and Joe Biden. I don't really have good choices here. Well, listen that Biden

thing made by Monday. Biden may not be the choice. The other choice, I should say. We have got to get to that convention. We have got to because if this is a contested convention, if it's an open convention, it is going to be chaos with Democrats just eating each other. Yeah, it's going to be wild. This morning, his campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dylan went on MSNBC's Morning Joe said President Biden is absolutely staying in the

presidential race. Everyone who says that right now should be put in the closet with Debbie Wasserman. Look, absolutely the presidents in this race. You've heard him say that time and time again, and I think we saw on display last night exactly why. Because Donald Trump is not going to offer anything new to the American people. He's the same person he was in twenty twenty.

He's the same person he was at the debate stage. He's the same person he is that is about himself and out of okay, I mean okay, on and on, and Biden is hanging on by a thread to think that he has the ability to continue with this campaign, let alone serve for four years is asinine, and it's disrespectful to people that have watched all the interviews and watch the debate and realize, because we have all had experience with aging

relatives, exactly what's going on. You're basically just lying to people repeatedly when we know what our eyes see. And I feel like we're coming off of a time when there has been that awakening of wait a minute, that the major networks have been telling us everything's fine, and that it's a right wing plot to discredit this president's editing testing or that it's editing, or that it's cheap fakes, or that it's and when they realize, wait a minute,

I am seeing what I'm seeing. I can trust my own eyes about what actually happened. Well, as the RNC was unfolding and closing up last night, the reports were everywhere from Biden to when we opined about it yesterday, that Biden decided last week to get out of the race and that the machinations are just getting started. In terms of what that would look like, what

that means, what does it mean for Kamala. There was a report that it would be an open convention, that Kamala would not automatically get the nod, that it could be four other people or three other people with Kamala. We've heard about people that say they will not run with her anyway. We'll break it all down coming up next. Whoa wait? I got one more? Oh. This was a follow up to an earlier comment, Wow, the Sherry and Shannon Show, the lunch ladies and Sherry, you're a whack

job. Please. I have zero problem with you calling me Sherry, but show your math. Do explain? What is the lunch ladies reference? I don't know that we're two ladies at lunch. I suppose I guess, well, I do like to lunch. Did you bring any food? I have? And I have blueberries? That's all I had. Do you want to should we eat? I'll go down to the snack draw and dive in. Maybe have some goldfish? Hey, you know what what? Tamp it down? Lady? Tell me what to eat. You've been listening to The Gary

and Shannon Show. You can always hear us live on KFI AM six forty nine am to one pm every Monday through Friday, and anytime on demand on the iHeartRadio AP
