Leila

Hey,

David

everybody.

Leila

How is it? How's that? How is it?

David

Oh, is it? How is it me?

Leila

How is that? How is it?

David

Welcome Fun Fact Friday we're a weekly podcast, father and daughter duo. Dana, whoever's the whoever's the David is the dad was the Leila is the daughter. We hang out and we talk about different things. What?

Leila

How is it?

David

How is it? I guess up okay.

Leila

I'm gonna be talking about this week what?

David

Extra excellent way to do the intro very upbeat and, and you know with it. We're talking about birthdays,

Leila

what's your favorite birthday?

David

My favorite birthday is today my wife's birthday. I don't like my birthday. Because every time we have my birthday, I get it. I get a year older and have to scroll further and further on the little list of birthday. Do you like a year? Is that your favorite?

Leila

Yeah,

David

that's because you always get all the good stuff on your birthday. You have all the fun. I do. So she was born. Like her birthday is a week after mine. So like everybody's always like, what do you do for Leila's birthday? What do you do for Lisa's birthday? And I'm like, Oh, yeah. Of course when people ask me what often birthday Oh, yeah, just tell me happy birthday. I'm fine. Because you know, and he gets mad. Well, no, it's not that I'm mad. Like all the stuff that I want is too

expensive to ask for for a birthday. You know? Yeah, I want like $500 computer processor or a power tool? That's $600 Because you don't want the cheap one. You want the good one? It's

Leila

Wow. So on the other hand, yeah, little trinkets. Yeah, we

David

she likes. We all like the little stuff. Like, I like getting a deck of cards that I don't have. I collect playing cards. I haven't mentioned that in a while. Bicycle cards, typically bicycle but I do have some other non bicycle ones, especially if they're like antique. And I have this tiny, tiny deck of cards. It's like not even an inch tall. Yeah, that I got from somebody locally here. When I told her that I liked playing cards. She's like, Oh, yeah, give them to me. It's

really nice. But today is my wife's birthday. Phaedra. My mother, executive producer of the show, our silent third partner. And we wanted to sing Happy Birthday publicly. For her we sang to her right after midnight last night. Because we were up we're a video game. Video game together as families do sometimes. Even pizza rolls. Yep. Eatin pizza rolls playing raft. So fun fun little survival game. Yeah, so but yeah, we we wanted to sing alright. 321

Leila

Happy

David

Cat 321 I did you get out of nowhere. I wasn't ready. You are way too fast. Are you ready? Okay. 321 Happy Happy Birthday. Our birthday song is short. There you go. Yep. That's a little song we'd like to do. So we're going to talk about birthday facts. It's gonna be a very short episode because Phaedra is in there. Just hanging out. We just got a new recliner in the living room. And she's hanging out in the new recliner. Reading the game. She's like it's so comfortable.

Bring me coffee. It's my birthday.

Leila

From a cafe locally.

David

Yeah, local cafe

Leila

got our little haven't candles and I forgot that we didn't so I just brought in a lighter and I was like here

David

call it one of the blueberries on fire.

Leila

She had eaten burnt really weary.

David

But yeah, we did find some we have done a birthday episode before back on episode 43. You can if you want to go back and listen to that. And I guess it's just she was 10 and she was very you know, very different voice and different presence on the show. And so it's dad. Yeah,

Leila

I had a voice isn't different. But right.

David

My voice is in different with my, the feel of the show. Yeah. grown up a little bit. You know, just as she grows, I can read a little more. A little less. Oh, cute. 10 year old dad, you know, whatever. So but yeah, we found some fun articles. We didn't cover much on the last episode. So we're gonna hit a few more of the birthday facts out there on the web. So why don't you go ahead and give us a couple of birth defects

Leila

the month of August has more birthday celebrations than any other month. Which celebrations what does that so gallery collection.com/blog/birthday trivia slash fun dash

David

bearable birthday slash. It's a terrible birthday fact whips.

Leila

Okay, because, you

David

know, it's

Leila

I mean, my birthday could be in March, but I have a celebration in August.

David

Right? It's very it's very, what do you mean? It's that's vague on what it means. Exactly. It's Is may 22 is the least common birthday October 5 is the most common birthday then they go from this whole the happy birthday song I think we covered this on the last episode but like it's it was supposedly copyrighted but then they found another version of it and then they found another version of it from a previous and then it was based on this other song with different words so it's actually

a derivative work and like it's just been this huge legal battle over the you know Happy birthday to you song Yeah, and it's it's a mess and you can look into it we Yeah, I think we may have talked about a little on the last time we did this but I think there's actually even been legal legal stuff come up since then about the song Happy birthday to you. So there's something on there about hear something on here about that.

But then they have the fact what goes up and never comes down your age of course my eyes rolled back so far my retinas detached when I read so not every not every site that comes up when you type in fact subbass is a great resource. We love you the gallery collection.com I guess we love my river. Okay,

Leila

another fact on this website is what did one candle say to the other? What? Where's the very bottom? Don't birthdays burn you up? That's how you like the worst joke I've ever heard. That's terrible. Exactly. That

David

does have a little fun ones, but I don't know if I trust him. noisemakers were used in birthdays originated originally in Europe as a way to ward off evil.

Leila

Who does? He's been this way? The gallery color. Let's deep dive its cards. Its greeting card. Is

David

it greeting card reading cards? Oh my gosh. It's a greeting card and the birthday card business cards. Pocket.

Leila

Don't go to this website. Yeah.

David

Well link in the show notes link in case you need some Thanksgiving business cards or some

Leila

business greeting card review.

David

Oh my gosh. 17th annual create a greeting card scholarship contest. Well guess

Leila

it's good. Do people give each other cards for July 4? Yeah,

David

people give each other cards for all sorts of stuff.

Leila

It will give gifts for July 4.

David

Free hotdogs. Oh, that's true. Come on over. I have some free hotdogs. Yeah. Okay, so let's go to a site to have a little bit of a different site. Okay, that is linked in the show notes. It's actually the first link in the show notes birthday facts. I'll put it gallery I'll put it name at gallery birthday facts in the show notes. So you know we're talking about Yeah, Gallery, and I'll put quotes around birthdate. It's there we

go. There's in quotes, the air quotes. Okay, so that over on facts net, which we've used

Leila

before Greeks added candles to cakes. Yeah.

David

So why but I mean, was that did they do it? It doesn't just for birthdays. It doesn't look like it doesn't look like it just like they just did that for fun. Which is what's wrong with that?

Leila

In ancient times, the ancient Greeks offer offered round shape cakes to Artemis, the God of the moon as a form of tribute. They lit the candles to make the cake shine like the moon. Oh, so I guess that's for birthdays.

David

Okay, well, I guess if it's at night, and you need to see so you can offer that cake at the fire. The Greeks they actually didn't have fires fire. Because fire wasn't invented until 1978 with Joseph fire and

Leila

VA but the Greeks were invented in that same year in

David

1978. By Joseph Greeks. Yes, yes.

Leila

The ancient ancient Greek. Yes, Joseph in quotes, let's it's his nickname.

David

But this this fax dotnet the first one, the origin of birthdays. I'm like, oh, when someone was born would be the origin. But it says nope, it was the Egyptians. They're the ones. They're the ones that started the tradition of having a birthday party. Okay, hold

Leila

on, reopen close tab. The

David

tradition of celebrating birthdays started with Ancient Egyptians who believed that when a pharaoh was crowned they became a God. Thus making their coronation day much more important than their birth and to the world. So, yeah, you go so, so great. I mean, Egyptians and Greeks with their stuff.

Leila

Good on gallery collection.com gallery collection. Yes, because there's two websites that have now I don't trust gallery collection.com in their fat, okay, because they're a card company. And this is facts. dotnet. So obviously, it's got to be true if it's on faxed on it. On gallery collection.com It says May 22 is the least common

birthday and October 5 is the most common birthday. Okay, but on facts.net It says that the most common birthday is September 9, was the least common birthdays on Christmas Day?

David

Hmm. Okay, so hold on, let

Leila

me more because I know people.

David

So we've got two sources here. And this was updated June 2. So let's ask AI, you, we're going to ask the Microsoft co pilot preview, which I believe uses open AI. So we're going to see what it has to say. So what is the most common birthday? What is the most common birthday and it's processing, and it says searching for the Pope. The most common birthday in the United States is September 9. On this day, an average of 12,300 babies are born. So I guess the United States so I don't know if maybe

gallery is talking about worldwide. And it says if so if someone if you're born on September 9, you're in good company. So let's say let's do common, what is the least common birthday? What is the least common birthday?

Leila

This is This is revolutionary show content right here.

David

So it was on today.com howstuffworks.com zippia.com and time.com was where the sources from the previous answer came from. And the least common birthday is February 29. I Yep, there you go. It's because it only happens once every Oh my gosh. Okay.

Leila

What's the latest? deletion? Deletion,

David

second. Least Common. Okay.

Leila

It's gonna say February 29. Again,

David

I don't want to add an image. How do I just if it says February 29th, I'm gonna be I'm gonna be very upset. That was That was That was funny. I mean, it makes sense. It says there's a one in 1460 chance to be born this day. Okay, so it says New Year's Day, New Year, the second least common is New Year's Day. And it's interesting to note that both Christmas Day and New Year's have birth, lower birth rates compared to other dates. So there you go. Maybe a lot of a lot of births are planned now.

Like they

Leila

they've always blown up Hot Topic is telling me to buy stuff. I haven't bought stuff at Hot Topic and like three years.

David

So yeah, but a lot of people like plan their, their, you know, labor labor thing out now. So they can be like, I don't want to don't want to give birth on Christmas Day. So they'll planet a day or two after you know, just to make it not be on Christmas. Which we have a relative that is very close to Christmas a couple of days off of Oh, yeah. And we're like, we always just combined the party to get our birthdays. Right. You and I combined for the family.

Leila

And I'm combined tears for Father's Day. Sometimes, right?

David

Because it's very, very close. That's what we did a couple nights ago. We had the Father's Day father's birthday party. Yeah. So what's your birth? Oh, birthstone is Aquamarine. Yep, mine's Aquamarine. Because March so while I'm looking, however on my class ring, which typically you get your birthstone in. I got the main birthstone because I liked the color green better. And it was emerald. Who

Leila

put on blowing up so these aren't these aren't in order thing it what's the birthstones? Yeah, January's Garnet. February's? Amethyst, March is Aquamarine. April was diamond. May is Emerald. June is either pearl or Alexandrite. July is Ruby. August is Peridot. September is Sapphire. October is Opal and tourmaline. November is yellow Topaz and December is Tanzanite. Those are all really pretty. Yep. And like the October when's the best? That's really pretty. Yeah. One

David

of the local jewelry stores, they have a whole section of birthstone stuff. So like you can just pick your birth month and pick a ring out or you know, they have it all in order. So it's kind of neat. Yeah. Have you ever heard about the world's longest birthday cake?

Leila

No.

David

In India, they made a 17,000 foot long birthday.

Leila

Oh

David

it's back in 2020. Of course it was like the show notes. Oh, that's interesting. What one of one of my links just went on I clicked it and then went right back to the same page. That's badly we're in website. But yeah, it was I mean, 17 that's 5300 meters of 17,388 foot long. So that's, that's really long. Yeah, that's my

Leila

opening up a soda. Sorry. It was really pressurized because I haven't drink out of in a second. I'm sure my mic down.

David

So I read a funny one about Ireland. I think it was a camera what side it was on. But in Ireland, they have a tradition of holding the baby upside down. And like bonking its head on the ground, once for each year. Oh, that I've gotta find a possible photos post. It was right there.

Leila

It was right there. It was founded to

David

some of the reflections on a live link in the show notes. And the people of Ireland celebrated birth celebrate birthdays of babies in a very funny manner. They lift the child upside down and bumps him or her on the head or on the floor. These bumps depend on how old the child is believed child is it as bird leaves my Wow can't talk is believed to bring good luck. And sometimes an extra bump is also added for more good luck. And I like this tradition. I think we should do

it on your next birthday. Okay, hold you upside down monkey on the floor. Okay, she'll put your arms down like what's Yeah, which duct tape your hands together on her on your sides, and then smash your head in the ground repeatedly. Okay. 15 times, he'll be 15

Leila

I'm gonna be 15.

David

So it's crazy. Oh, by the way. I don't want to this. This has a lot of the same facts here. But we're skimming through and we're finding that there was a very expensive birth certificate. And the way that this fact is worded, it could mean multiple things. World's world's most expensive birth certificate belongs to Paul McCartney. It was auctioned in March 1997 for $84,146.

Leila

And he read me this. And I was like, well, whose birth certificate is it? Exactly. And then he was like Paul McCartney dough. And I was like, well, but

David

no, I looked at it. And I was like, you're correct. That was a very valid question, because the way this is worded, world's most expensive versus like it belongs to Paul McCartney. It doesn't say that it is Paul McCartney's.

Leila

Yeah. It says it belongs to him. He could own it.

David

I bet your money. It's Paul McCartney's birthday. I ain't bet $94,000 But I'll bet you some. Well, do you know what a golden birthday is?

Leila

Yes. What it's like, how? Whatever day you were born on, it's your age. So So mine would be 25 Is my golden birthday. Right?

David

Some people? Might. Yeah, mine's 18. I was about to say some people don't get a golden birthday. But that's kind of morbid. But I was thinking like, if you were if you were 55. You can't be on board in the 55th day of the month, because my brain worked backwards. Like, like,

Leila

you're only 55 Your whole life. Well,

David

I was thinking yours will be when you're 25 miles. 18. Right. Yeah, I'm like, oh, man, what if you're like, 32? You never get a golden Oh, well, sometimes my brain don't work, right. Yeah. So guess how many? How many people share your birthday? A couple? About 17 point 7 million people. That's it too many people average number of people. It's pretty easy number to come to you just take the world population, which is always estimated.

Leila

I know a girl with my birthday.

David

Yeah. Yeah. Same exact birthday. Boy in the same place. We're so cool. Like, a couple feet. A couple feet from each other, but not the exact same room. Right, exactly. Okay, there's a phenomenon known as birthday twins. Yeah, which we are all aware of. But this phenomenon is also known as the birthday paradox, like we talked about this in our previous birthday episode is the likelihood that out of 23 people, there's a 5050 chance that two of them will have the

same birthday. This probability goes up to 99% for a group of 57 people. So like, like it says, if you got 23 people in a room, you got a 5050 chance that if everybody wrote down their birthday, two of those people were born In the same day, right, and it sounds crazy, but you're not looking for a specific day. You're looking for to that match. Do you see what I'm saying? Yeah. So I'm not looking for somebody who has March 18. As the birthday, I'm looking for just any two people,

you know. But if you if you've got 57 people together, you got a 99% chance that two of them have the same birthday. Which is interesting. You think it'd be one in the 365? But it's not.

Unknown

It's not? It's not.

David

By the time you read this entire article, around 250 babies will have done what? Good thing? I didn't read the whole article. What you said, you don't believe that? I believe that. Oh, there's so many people that are really low. Have you ever seen people? There's like so many of them. I haven't seen people think about when we were driving today.

Leila

Also, how do they know?

David

There's people write stuff down sometimes. And then they take averages, like averages. I know you don't like averages. You don't like stats? We know we're well aware of your stats. A version,

Leila

but also how do they know how fast I read this? What

David

if I skimmed it, right? What if I just read real fast? What

Leila

if I only read that one?

David

It takes the average person an average amount of time to read this average length article. And then they take how many seconds that is and then they figure out how many babies are born on average per minute. And then they run the numbers and they came up with that number. And they typed it in there. Okay. Okay, so you ready for this one? No. If you think you spend a lot of money on your birthdays, think again. Okay. Are you ready to think again? Yeah. Did you think again? Yep.

Awesome. The Sultan of Brunei hosted the world's most expensive birthday party to celebrate his 50th birthday. Guess how much his 50th Birthday cost?

Leila

27 million. Exactly.

David

Exactly. I don't know exactly. 27 million to the penny. But that's what the article says it's $27 million. That is awesome. For the people that made money off of that. I know. He's got it to spend and he's given it to florists and bakers and good good. Because that's $27 million out there in the hands of people who probably need it more than he does. So he just got scammed. And somebody somebody's just charging 27 plates. Yeah. And, and they were like, these are those extra

fancy paper plates. The ones you can like cut a steak on and it won't tear through, you know, the

Leila

fancy ones do I would drop 27 million on those. Okay,

David

so out of paper plates. What What are your favorite kind? Like it? Let's say money is no no concern. But you need paper plates. Not like actual plates. I

Leila

would get the the pretty. No, I don't like big plate. I would get the little small paper plates. Super small ones, but they're like the medium sized ones. Okay, that are like covered in the in the waxy stuff.

Unknown

Right? Like the.

Leila

I don't know what you call it? Yeah,

David

it's wax. It's wax. It's a type of wax. Yeah. It's nice and smooth. It you can pour liquid into won't like, go through the paper. Yeah. So we were at Sam's recently, it was paper plates. By the time we were going to splurge and buy some paper plates, right? Because we don't buy them all the time. But every once in awhile, we just get a big stack and we're like, oh, this is so nice when we don't have to do dishes. But um, I saw those. I want to say it's China brand.

And they're the ones that almost feel fuzzy on the bottom. Yeah, like, it's they're thicker. But like if you cut a steak on those things, the paper fibers get inside the steak knife and like like go inside. I hate them. I don't like them. But I guess if you're not cutting into whatever you're eating, I don't know. That's what I liked the Dixie ones. Yeah, just the standard de

off brand of the Dixie ones are just as good. Yeah, they're all made probably the same factory but yeah, just your standard paper plate but not the one that's just paper that's kind of cramped to peel paper plate. Yeah, I

Leila

also don't like to Styrofoam ones. No, no, I

David

don't like styrofoam. Anything. Really? Yeah. Except for packing. You know, for stuff we've gotten way, way off topic and this is kind of boring. No, it's fine.

Leila

Styrofoam. You're going on the bad list?

David

Welcome to paper plate talk with David Lidl. Paper play talk, we

Leila

just start making a bad and a good list.

David

stuff. I like stuff I hate.

Leila

Yeah. So Styrofoam going on the bad list?

David

Bad list? Yep. Maybe we'll put it on the website. We'll have like a good and bad stuff. And we won't ever use any brand names, which like like we're talking about categories of things, not specific items, unless there's a certain specific items terrible But um, so China, in China, an infant is considered age one. According to the accordingly on the birthday of a one year old in most parts of the world, an infant in China would be aged two years. What? I read that verbatim that doesn't. Okay, so

Leila

if we have learned one thing today, it is. websites don't know, how have you written? I'm

David

really wondering how much stuff is written by AI these days. Yeah. And they just literally don't even check it. They just, they just dump it on the internet. Because this says that this was written by reflections team. It doesn't, it doesn't have a specific writer.

Leila

So the reflections team might consist of AI guy guy,

David

who's like, write me an article called 15. Mind blowing birthday facts, you know what? I'm gonna, I'm gonna do this, you're gonna ask, I'm gonna ask AI. I'm gonna see what it does. I'm gonna see what it pulls up, we usually do not know, we don't ever use, we hardly ever use art on our stuff. And sometimes sometimes, and we're doing less and less of that the novelty has worn off. It was cute for a few things. And I like to use it. I have used it for some programming stuff, where I

didn't really know the language that I was writing in. But it helped me learn the language. It kind of gave me examples that I could tweak. And, I don't know learn better like that. Okay, so I'm going to, I'm going to write a prompt here and see what it comes up with just to see if this is similar to how this company wrote this article. Okay, so they might not have used or they used a specialized AI because I just put in, I put it in please write me a list of 15 Mind blowing birthday facts

and we might have to start doing this on the show. Because this is hilarious. And this says, certainly, here are 15 Mind blowing birthday facts that will leave you amazed All right, so number one ancient birthday celebrations. They talk about Greeks and Egyptians like we already have candle tradition. Okay, now here we start to go a little start to get a little weird, right? Which is not weird. It's still Martin Luther King and and Martin Luther King Jr. and Anne Frank, one of the

same year. Were born in the same same year. Yeah, that's

Leila

so weird to me. It is.

David

And then all of a sudden we get Canadians live south of Seattle surprisingly 64 Canadians live south of Seattle is Seattle is further north in Toronto. 64% of Canadians. French soldiers in World War One more French soldiers. Birthdays immortal jellyfish. We get US government zombie apocalypse plan.

Leila

We got Froot Loops flavors. We got a tortoise named Jonathan.

David

Oh my gosh

Leila

astronauts aging slower in space.

David

And okay, Pi Day that okay, this is what the related March 14 overlaps, which is Pi Day overlaps with the birthday of one of the greatest minds in history. Albert Einstein was born on March 14 1879. Let's see people born on February. Yeah, so the vast majority of these answers that copilot Microsoft gave me are not

Leila

but they sandwich with birthday bread. Because it has like three at the top that are birthday related. The middle has nothing to do with it. And then the bottom is birthday related. Oh my gosh, this is crazy. So I guess I just assumed you're gonna read the bottom and the top.

David

And another thing about copilot going on AI rant here. I I've been occasionally will ask it for like a concept art just because I want to see something funny or interesting. Like Leila likes the show called Miraculous Ladybug and Cat Noir. Yeah, right. And it's just a fun, you know, it's a cartoon. It's fun. It's actually kind of a decent superhero show. And then she likes Hatsune Miku, which is a Vocaloid. We've we've talked about a lot and she does cosplay stuff with that. Sorry.

Leila

It's a lot to explain. And I was like,

David

oh wonder I wonder what a cross between ladybug on that cartoon. And Hatsune Miku would look like and it pulled up. And she's like, Oh my gosh, that's so cool looking. And it is it's a really cool looking like matchup that she could do a cosplay of later. And, but then there's suggestions at the bottom when you use copilot. And one of the suggestions was like, add more, more tech of autonomy, more of the tech aspect of

Hatsune Miku. Well, a couple weeks ago when we did the gallbladder episode, or the useless organs episode Yeah, I use the AI to create a picture of a gallbladder and I guess it's still had some of that In the in the prompt, because it gave me a picture of hot Sunni Miku.

Leila

With a bladder with hot tonight. Yeah,

David

gallbladder was hot Sunni Miku. Like parts, like air, and it's very funny. I'll try to remember to put it in the, in the, in the show notes or the chapter files. Anyway, it's not the large language models are not the best. I feel like they're actually getting worse, the more input they have, because a lot of people are inputting weird stuff, and then it feeds off of itself. And anyway, yeah, that's the end of my rant. And do I have to I still have a David David rant?

Leila

Oh, thank you. I don't

David

know, I don't I don't have the David around the board. Anywho I think we're about done on Friday facts.

Leila

We're gonna go spend time with my mama. Yeah, it's been about

David

we got Yeah, I think we're gonna go ahead and head in, we are going to let everybody know that this is a value for value podcast. And we have received some support in the in the form of Satoshis. And we're very excited about this. Value value means that we put these shows out for free, we have a good time doing it. And we hope we bring some value to you. Through the show. If you're excited about the show, when you

see a new one pop up, means that means something to you. We can't tell you what it means it may just mean enough that you really enjoy listening. Or you share the show with somebody who's asking about podcasts or whatever. Or if you feel inclined, or that gives you more value. Send us whatever you feel like sending us we have a Pio box. We love postcards, magnets, anything you want to send even just a little letter saying I

love the show. We love getting stuff in the PIO box, you can go to a FunFactFriday.com and click the donate link at the top page. And you'll see our Pio box. We also accept monetary donations in the form of PayPal. We still have Patreon. Nobody uses it though. It's fine. It's hard to get rid of

Leila

it. Get rid of it one day.

David

Yeah. But then if you're using a modern podcast app, this supports the value boosting system. You can send Satoshis like these folks did.

Leila

Yeah. And the earlier the send them, the more cheaper they are pretty much Yeah,

David

well yeah, right now bitcoins on sale. So that's why I like to say it when the value goes down. But yeah, we got one for 7777 Satoshis, which is a good chunk of change right now. From cousin Vito says boosting for episode 188. Glad that Leila realizing be realized as being a redhead is more important.

Leila

Episode is the good news for the week. We already talked about me being a redhead because I just dyed my hair like two days before that. And he was like, Yeah, that's good news for the week, because we forgot to get good news. We haven't gotten good news and why

David

we haven't. We haven't. Wow. But

Leila
