Hey guys. We're back. Are we? Yeah, we missed last week. Remember, we're back. Fun Fact Friday. We're a podcast we discuss convex sometimes. And we release on Fridays. Yep.
You finally accepted it. I'm so happy 280
million episodes. So yeah. If you have any topic ideas for us, if we if we mess something up, or if you just want to send us a hey, we enjoyed the show, or we're in hate we hate the show. mela FunFactFriday.com clicking my pen, I need to stop that. That's super annoying. I
hated it. Sorry.
Yeah, we were off last week right now. Yeah, we want hate mail and hate comments. We go on, go on whatever podcast app you use that has comments, or go find a new like, what's the fruit company? The one that's named after fruit, orange, orange, orange computers. They have a product, right? They have a podcast app. Go to the orange podcast app and leave us a a really, really good comment along with a bad review. Like click a one star but then like, super good comment, like
you love it. But then it's a one star. So people will think oh, my gosh, what's going on? They don't think they know how star system works. I don't think that we think or vice versa. Five stars with a terrible comment. Yeah. We genuinely don't want the comments and likes and all that has nothing to do with the algorithm on how Apple podcasts works. I was listening to whole thing about it the other day. But no, yeah. So this episode,
we're going to talk about why we're out last week. We're gonna talk about a couple of interesting things that happened to us this week. And then we're not doing what we normally do.
Yeah, we got a different format format
for this episode. And just to keep your listening, we're not going to tell you what it is yet. Yeah. So last week, I was elbow deep into I'm putting a screened in porch on the back of our house. And I'm doing it all myself. And I was cut up and my muscles hurt. And I was frustrated. And I was sweaty. And I just couldn't get to it and get get to make the podcast. And Leila had a bunch of she had tests. Yeah, recently, right. So we were just like, You know what? Both of us are super
stressed out from stuff we're doing. I also did some recording for the Marvel move app.
And things like that. So again, above a 90 minute state test.
She did really well. She got it was rough. Man. She got a perfect score on one of them. Yeah,
I'm good at math man. Apparently, not on this
show. Okay, you're like there's a comma. What does that mean? I have
no idea. I genuinely I told her this. I have no idea how I got 100 on that. I told my math teacher that too. But I was like, I'm terrible at this. And you know that? How did I do this? And she was like, oh,
multiple choice, I guess.
You gotta know, because I did all the math. And I got all math, right. Oh, so you have to actually show the math. I think it's just the stress thing for me. If I have enough stress, I can do it. Right. Right.
That's how I am if I'm not, if I'm not stressed. I'm not doing it. Yeah, me too. I heard something really, really cool. The other day, it was something like if you have an obligation to do something that you don't want to do, it's called stress. But or no, if you have to work hard at something that you don't want to do. It's called stress. But if you have to work harder, something you do want to do. It's called a hobby. Yeah. Or a passion. No, it's called a passion. I should have
wrote it down. But you know, so, yeah, and then this weekend, or actually, earlier in the week, I was in the backyard, and I was just clearing out some stuff like we had an old grill I've been meaning to get rid of and I was like, time to take a trip to the dump. And we were digging around back
there. Guess what we have? Big old snake Yeah. inserted in the house and you're not gonna know where I was like.
It's about about what five foot long now give or take? little rat snake so we don't just he's living living his best life in the backyard. Vida Loca let them do his thing out there. We're not getting rid of them. Yeah. We like the ones that get rid of rodents. We named him Batman.
Because he's nice and black and white. And his eyeballs have a little bat symbol in them.
Yeah, it's like it's almost looks like a little bat symbols. Eyeballs are weird. And he has a companion. They're talking about which version of Batman we were today. Which version of Batman Are you the Lego Batman doll? Oh, yeah. Forget about Lego Batman. I guess I'm the I'm the old man Batman from Batman Beyond, which are probably not even my familiar with was a short lived TV series, but it was really good. Where Bruce Wayne got really old and was like
apprenticing a new Batman. And it was actually a really good series. Anyway, Anyway, so yeah, that's that's that's what we've been. We've been up to. Now for the new format
barnburner. Now,
we're not going to be an every week thing. We're just No, I wanted to do this and Leila to it was excited about it. Leila is going to take a test to test US Citizenship and Immigration Services, civics questions for the naturalization test. We're gonna see how she can do on civics. And I know you probably haven't covered a few of these things in classes you've done. There's
a game called iCivics. Oh, yeah. And when we're done with our work, we'll play it on the computer. Sometimes. You basically have to run a government. Oh, you're a you're a politician. And you have to make it.
There's one called Tropico where you're a dictator in like, a third world island nation. So I haven't played it. I've got it, but I never got around the planet. I love city building games and all that. So we're gonna start off.
There's a guy in my class that plays it like 20 470. Yeah, yeah. It's called iCivics.
Is it like a website game? Yeah. I will try and remember to put that into isn't it? Yeah. Okay. So icivics.com or. Org. I will try. Remember to put that in the show notes. I'll leave the tab open. So um, let's see. Let's see. Okay. American government questions. Are you ready?
Yes. All right. We're
gonna go through these fast. Okay. Oh, I do need to. I do need to do something and pause. Okay. Okay. Scoring. spreadsheet is pulled up. So here we go. Question one. Do not look at my screen. Okay. What is the supreme law of the land? Not off to a good start.
It's the one it's that one.
There's, there's amendments to it. The Constitution gives you a point five on that one. I think you know, No, zero. You got 100 points. Sorry. Yeah. Okay, so what does the Constitution do?
It protects your rights, protects
your basic rights as an American, it also sets up the government and defines how the government should be run. will give you that one. The idea of self government in the first three words of the Constitution. What are these words? Oof. The first three words three
words the Constitution. That's what they meant. That's right. The
constitution is the is the constitution
free? No.
We the People. Yeah. We the people in the USA. Give it to her. No, no. No. All right. I love that about you. Alright, so what is an amendment? It's
a thing that you can like, do. i Okay, it's a thing that protects a right or set something in place, like a law. Almost. Okay. It's like a better law. But it's
a it's a change or an addition to the Constitution. Yeah, because the Constitution sets everything up. And then they made amendments like, and now. So if we decide as a country that we want to add a new amendment to the Constitution, there's a process for that. So, yeah, yeah. So we're, we'll give me a point. fontanella Okay. Well, that was no one's bad. Alright,
keep going. All
right, sorry. Sorry. What did we call the first 10 amendments to the Constitution? The Bill of Rights that is correct. The Bill of Rights. What is one right of what one right or freedom from the First Amendment? Actually, I want more than Yeah, I won't give you all alright. What are the what are the rights lined out there? First Amendment there's five. Okay. Put
religion. Speech. Petition. Press.
This is the crap. No. Okay. You do not have a right under the
guess all leave. No, yeah.
We're trying to move things. I'm giving you a point. Good. I'm giving you a point because you actually only had to do one but yes, it's that's the five points in the first First Amendment of the Constitution. How many amendments does the Constitution have?
Like 2627 Yeah.
I didn't know that one. That was one of the ones I didn't know for sure. I know there's about I knew it was 20 I knew it was over 25 and under 30. I 20s. What did the Declaration of Independence do?
It it Dec flair and Then it's from the British.
That's kind of self explanatory. It was. Alright, what are two rights? In the Declaration of Independence?
Declaration of Independence? What's the Declaration of Independence?
The Declaration of Independence? Oh, okay. I read it one time that Americans have the right to
happiness. That's one the pursuit of happiness. life and liberty, life liberty in the pursuit of happiness. There you go.
You got it. Awesome. All right. We we start getting in the weeds
history nerd, but I'm not really that much of a big history nerd. So.
Okay, so what is the freedom of religion?
Freedom to practice any religion you would like? To? Yeah. Or, or
to not practice any religion at all? Yeah. So there you go. So we got a point for that one. What is the look? Sorry? What is the economic system in the United States? Capitalism? Yep. capitalist market. Capitalist Economy. That's what it says in the official guide here. What is the rule of law?
No, no.
It's either you can say either everybody must follow the law. Leaders must obey the law. Government must obey the law, and no one is above the law. Rule of Law means All right, now we are moving to Section B system of government. Oh, okay. So, name one branch or part of the legislative. Okay. Wow. Wow. Okay, making sure I'm on the
right line in the spreadsheet later judicial and executive? That's correct. Those
are the branches. It also would have accepted the courts, it would have accepted precedent, because that's part of the government. Yeah. And that's just how it was worded. So what stops one branch of government from becoming too powerful?
The other the other branches? There
you go. You didn't say it, how they said it, but that's what it means. It's like they say, checks and balances. Yeah, or separation of powers? Because
the branches were made to make sure that no, there was no dictatorship or there was no one person that could control or evenly or even one group or one group. Right. So affiliate Supreme Court can't. Mom places, you know, right,
that all has to be destroyed. That has to run through multiple, multiple branches in order for anything to really get done. Who is in charge of the executive branch?
The president? Yep. Yeah.
Okay, so what? This isn't one of them, but I want to know if you know the answer, so I'm gonna
give you a present. I'm looking at a corner right now was mighty fine corner. Yeah. I've never looked at this part of the shed before.
Studio. So um, the three branches? Yeah. What is the judicial do judicial?
All right, let the judge know they protect? No, crap. Actually. No, it
might be further on. Okay. Don't worry about it. They think it's further away. Give you time to think okay. Okay. There we go. Who makes federal laws me.
Wish. Okay. The, what are you asking? Like, what's branch?
What? No. Well, yes, actually, um,
federal laws, federal laws. Legislative. Yes. Yeah.
The legislature makes laws. You could have also said Congress or Senate and House of Representatives. Those are the answers. What are the two parts of the US Congress? House
of Representatives and the Senate? Just? I forgot the US Senate. So, spoiler.
Alright. How many senators are there? Like? 12?
No. Okay. The Senate House of Representatives like 100. Right. It's not like that. 120?
No, 150? No. 100 200? Senate 200.
We're gonna notice but I'm saying the House of Representatives has that many know, the Senator 20
has way more. We'll get to that. That is a different question. Isn't
it? I don't know. Seven.
As 100 100 every every state gets two senators. Yeah.
What? Yeah. When Republican one Democrat?
No, no, they're both elected. They can both be one of each. Or they can be both of one. It's just, they always have to have to zero if something goes wrong with one. They have one in place at all times. And you know, vote for the states. All right, so we elect US senators for how many years?
Oh, good question. So three, six. Dang it. I know it was either three or six. I don't know where I got three from all
right. And I know you're gonna not get this one. Okay, you might actually this one. Who is one of your US state senators from Now Oh crap, because the political ads that you've seen, okay.
I don't remember.
It doesn't concern me that used to get so mad when the political concerned me.
So I don't care. Will Ferrell Will Ferrell?
No, right now I think Tom Tillis and Ted Budd or Senate. You hated them. I did you did you your selection just because the oh
my god, people in my class, it's like, Can Donald Trump texting me?
I don't want to over you. That's somebody sign number. Apparently. That's funny. I feel the same way though. Okay. The House of Representatives has how many voting members? Oh, this is what you're trying to figure out earlier? Yeah.
Like 150 435? Why? So each state 35 As a member, I can't
go into that, because it's another question like this. It's very comprehensive. I've already read all of them. Can you name one of our us represent?
Mark Jacobs?
No, I don't know
the current people.
How long are US representatives elected for the six years? Three years to give me point? No.
Or even counting? Yeah, okay, good.
I'm Caitlin counterpoints. I gotta kind of spreadsheet up. Question 24. Who does a US senator represent? The, the state? That is correct. The people of the staff. They don't represent the state itself, because that's just a hunk of land. So yeah, one point 25. Why do some states have more representatives than other states? Because they can?
Because? Because, again,
what's the real answer? Don't have? Does every state have the same number of people in it?
Oh, there's one for like, every so often.
You know, I mean, it's, I'm gonna, I'll give you half a point. You don't deserve it. I don't deserve it. Don't give it to me. It's based on population. Yeah. So every so often, and actually, I think, recently, California lost a Senator who are not a Senator or Representative because they are population went down. It moved over to another stage and they just got fired. Right. It's like, Hey, man, that is a whole process. Yeah. Okay, so how many how many? We elect a president
for how many years? 680? My gosh, four. There you go. You don't get it? Come on. It's every four years, just like four more years. Or more. Wait. Oh, really? Is that why you? Didn't know either? You're saying four more years?
I did. Couldn't think of it right now. All right. We'll
give it to you. I think I think
not. Visa.
Okay. And what month we vote for president?
November? Yeah. Yeah.
What is the name of the president? States currently?
Joseph. President. Joseph, President, the United States 1970 1970 Joe Biden,
Joe Biden. All right, what is the vice president's name? Kamala Harris? Kamala Harris, Kamala Harris, did you hear about that? Oh, no. Drew Barrymore was like we we just need a Kamala Harris right now. Oh,
Tamala Karis. Yo.
If the president can no longer serve who becomes president me? Probably. Yes, vice presidents correct. Let's see if that is. Okay. Here we go. Now we're getting in the weeds. If both the President and the Vice President can no longer serve who becomes president? Me the Speaker of the House is that there is an entire line. There's an entire line of secession For if, you know a bunch of people can't do the job, for whatever reason. And it goes down, like real far into the government.
And actually, the Postmaster General is on that list. So go go from mailman to the Postmaster General is he's the top mailman of the country. Oh
my gosh. That'd be amazing. I don't want to be the top postman.
Oh, get to work. Great title right. Postmaster General. I'm not just the postmaster. I'm also I'm also a general it's an old Seinfeld episode. Okay, so yeah, Speaker the house if the president and vice president can do it, who is the commander in chief of the military?
I have no idea. The president. What? Who
signed the bills to become laws? President, the President, who vetoes bills. The president, the president. I asked these questions. I asked these questions to your mom last night, and she was like, it's the president the vetoes bills, but why would the answer be the president for three in a row? That's just wrong? So she was like, I don't know if it's actually the president, because why would they do that? Last
week? For my homework? I answered, every single question is B, and half of them, right? Yeah. And half of them are right, which means I got half of them wrong.
50 Just admit to me that you got to 50 and
she lets us do correction says 77.
She wants you to learn it. She wants you to learn it. So what is the President's Cabinet do?
Maximum pamper Joe Sam where
he puts his groceries? Is that I just saw a bug. Oh, no. We'll keep an eye out for it. Oh, it's a stink bug. We can't do anything about it. Oh, our school is absolutely infested with those Yeah, stink bugs are bad guy just told me. Okay, so where were we? 3035? What was it? 35. What is what is
what's the cabinet? What is the cabinet? It's like his his men.
Yeah. That's, yeah, it's
just dudes. That's really all I can explain about
it. Yeah, they just advise them. They're just as guys. All right. Now, here we go. Who are two? What are two cabinet level positions?
The top and the bottom? Oh, my gosh. Be very
top one and keep your keep your waffle maker in the bottom? Yeah, we got a waffle maker. Very excited about we want it in a raffle. Okay. So you don't know two cabinet level positions?
I don't think so. Okay.
So if I know, they may not they're not regularly referred to as that, though. It's like the secretary of
Oh, Secretary of State and the Secretary of whatever.
You gotta give me at least one more than Secretary of State. There's a whole list crap.
Secretary of the house. My house Secretary
of what? What's the guy who's over the military?
The General Secretary General, Secretary, Sargent secretaries,
President, all of them are Secretary of the State. You got Secretary of State or no?
Secretary, the second state secretary of misery. Oh, my
gosh. Agriculture, commerce, Defense Education. I
would have never gotten a Secretary of Defense I might have got that's what
I was trying to lead you into. But we'll give you half a point because it was too Oh, no. Didn't get that. No, but you got you got one of them. And it was a two two part answer. Okay. So I'll give you a point five. Okay, what does the judicial branch do?
Judges? You were asking that?
Right. Right. You just saying the word. What is it? Judge? Do?
They enforce the law? No. No. They they make sure people know the law. enforced? No.
Come Do they do. They review laws? Yeah, explain laws, resolve disputes, and decide if laws go against the Constitution? Yeah. Yeah. I think you knew that one. I just couldn't say it. Right.
I know the basic idea of what every branch does, right.
What is the highest court in the United States? Supreme Court? Correct. How many justices are on the Supreme Court? Seven?
Nine?
Final answer.
897999.
All right, who is the Chief Justice of the United States? Because they gotta have a boss. Again. I'm looking at President. No. John Roberts. I didn't know that one. Chief Justice John Roberts. All right. That's his name. Good for him. Yep. Good job, buddy. Next question. All right. under our Constitution, some powers belong to federal government. What is one power of the federal government? Is the federal
government like Washington DC? Like what non state government like the ones that are oh, that deal with the whole nation the
ones that can make the laws No.
Laws? What does the what you got to think of something that applies to all states equally? Like something that the government would have to do amendments as a country
amendments?
Not really I could explain that to you, but it's a very long and complicated process. Okay. Take a sip.
They're in charge of a crap.
Okay, so think about I'm gonna try and lead you in This one if if another country were to get mad at us, yeah. What Georgia handle it? Or would the national government, the federal right? The federal government, what is one, they're
in charge of disputes and like war and
stuff, they can declare war. That's one of their power. They can also print money
was playing Minecraft the other day and the pig winds were fighting the Haugland. And just like war, war,
war never changes. They can create an army that can make treaties with other countries. Yeah. So the stuff that applies to the whole country? Yeah. All right. Now under our Constitution, some powers belong to the States. What is one power of the States law?
Now? Yeah, yeah.
does actually get appointed? Is there a national driver's license? No. So that would be a power that belongs to the states. I'm not gonna give you that. They provide schooling and education provide protection, like police safety, like fire department, they can give driver driver's licenses, and they can like do land use and zoning laws and stuff inside their own state zoning. Yeah, yeah. Oh, my gosh. What was the first thing that popped in my head? All right. Who is the
governor of our state? Roy Cooper. Hey, good job.
Nice.
What's the capital of North Carolina?
Raul. Les.
Go? What are the two major political parties in the United States Democrats
and Republicans?
What is the political party of the president right now?
Right. Demo quiet.
Republican. Yeah, okay. Democrats, correct. Yeah. All right. Can you name the Speaker of the House of Representatives right now? He's the third in line to be president.
Oh,
nope. Mike Johnson.
I've never heard that name of my life. No, no, no. Yeah.
And pausing for a second. I had to cough really loud. And I had to get a beverage drink. Now we're moving on to rights and responsibilities. My favorite? Are they Nope. All right. There are four amendments of the Constitution about who cannot who can and cannot vote was about to be like, No, not.
Okay. Describe one of them. Women can vote.
Okay, that landowners,
women?
I don't know. So the women can vote thing is kind of like a everybody can vote. Yeah. It's not a it didn't specifically say like women. You know, this. This one's just for women. As far as I remember, I could look it up, I guess.
People who were previously slaves. was one.
A male citizen of any race. Yeah. What's the age? Is that amendment? No, you go. Yes. Yeah. Citizens 18. and older can vote. You don't have to pay to vote. Yeah, you don't have to pay a poll tax. That doesn't sound really good in the Slurpee bubbling noises. Okay, you knew that you knew, though. So like, what is one responsibility? That is only for a United States citizen? For a US citizen? What do you mean, what's the responsibility that we have as citizens?
I don't know. We got to be at a live? I don't know. I don't know what you're asking. So
as a citizen, we are asked to do a couple of things. D can you think of one of them that we would have to do? Or sponsibility? That's only for citizens? Follow the rules. No, no. There are no rules. How do we pick her? Are officials vote? Yes. Oh, only citizens can vote. And that's true. serve on a jury.
Oh, I forgot those existed. I don't get to do it. Yeah,
you'll get there. Oh, stinkbug slot around. Adventure. Don't even name one. Name. Oh, sorry. What are two rights of everyone living in the United States?
Freedom of religion. Freedom speech. Yep.
That's, that's to
say, know, there's more but still.
Okay. So what is name one right? Only for United States citizens.
So like no one else? Freedom of speech.
Freedom of speech? No, because non citizens come here. They have freedom of speech.
So suddenly citizens voting. Yep.
Voting in federal elections and running for federal office. Yeah. Okay, so What do we show loyalty to when we say the Pledge of Allegiance, our country, I would have also accepted the flag because it's a pledge allegiance to the flag and are of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. So I pledge allegiance to the flag, and that I never thought of it like that. You just say it because they tell you to right. Yep.
Yeah. Because they don't explain it to us. That's why I always thought of it as to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, like to the United States, United States. And like, the different the other stuff, we got other stuff. We got one other stuff. The other stuff.
You know, we're a republic, right? Yes. Republic, are we Yeah. Where we're not a democracy where Republic? What? We're a democratic republic? What? Let me assume we are yet Do
you know why Alexander Hamilton?
Do you know? Do you know why? We're no. Because if we were not a Democratic Republic, and just a straight democracy, then it'd be 50% plus one person could decide to kill everybody else. And it would be illegal.
Yep.
So you can't have that? You can't have any of that. Yeah, everybody has rights. We're a republic. Okay, so let's see what what did her What is one promise you make when you become a citizen of the United States
that you will uphold the Constitution, defend the Constitution and laws
of the United States? There's also accepted, give up loyalty to other countries obey the laws United States. So
how that came to my mind. How did I just do that?
I don't know. Magic. What? You glanced at my screen? No,
I did not. I swear it did not.
Let's see certain from
I'm not that smart.
Well, maybe you've watched a video and you've heard somebody say, uphold and defend the Constitution might have just been well, I've heard people you've heard people say, swear oaths. Before, so that's true. All right, number 50. Geez. 5054. All right. How old the citizens have to be to vote for President 13. Okay. What are two ways Americans participate in their democracy? Voting and hit of two.
I'm thinking about it. voting and voting. All the
other stuff is just like join a political party. Yeah. Join us civic group, a community group. It's yeah, you can participate in as much or as little as you want to. Okay, number 56. When is when is the last day you can sit in send in your federal income tax forms? Oh, now we're getting into the part. They really care about tax day, which is what date every year? Mm. I don't expect to hear That's April 15. Yeah, that's
something you don't have to ever think about. When must all men register for the Selective Service?
Six, 810? Eight? Yeah.
Yep. When, when dudes turn 18 They have to send them their Selective Service Card so they can get drafted so they can get drafted if they have to. Right if it ever comes up again. Also, one of the cool things is, is it well, I say cool, but I hate it. But I didn't hate it at the time. But I've thought about it since then. After you send in your Selective Service Card. A couple of companies send you free stuff. Like what like a cookie. One of the national razor companies sent me dude
though, sent me back a razors, like really nice. Yeah. Stuff like that. Just Oh, thanks for signing up for the draft well, because we were legally required to Yeah, but you know, it saved me like $12. So what is one reason? Oh, this is going back to the colonial period and independence. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. What is one reason the colonists came to America
to get away from Britain
Why would they want to get away from because the king
was terrible person. Or they didn't like the king and the way that he ruled.
So political liberty, yeah. Okay. That's one of the accepted answers. Freedom, political liberty, religious freedom, economic opportunity, practice their religion and to escape persecution.
Yeah, I knew all those. They're all like tucked in a little nook and cranny in my mind. Yeah. It's
it's tough to like, articulate some of the stuff. Yeah. Who lived in America before the Europeans arrived? Do
you need Americans?
Okay. Let's see what group of people were taken to America and sold as slaves
I don't know. People
of Africa. Yeah.
Don't almost sit Africans but you
know, that's the sorry. Yeah. I'll give it to you honestly. Have that in your brain. Um, Why did the colonists fight the British?
Because they didn't like the way they wrote.
Can you be more specific? Okay, what about the tea?
There were taxing the tea. So they didn't like the taxes. There you go.
Yeah. And if you knew how small of a tax it was, oh, how big our taxes are now.
So I talked about my British teacher before, right? Yeah. My brother's teacher dressed up as the British tea party. For Halloween. It was so fun. It was hilarious. And I loved it.
So Boston Tea Party, and now a British tea party is just a regular tea. Okay, let's see. Where are we? 62. Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?
Wrap? I know this. I have to know this. You have to know this to pass last year? Um, me? No. No, Thomas Jefferson.
There you go. Yes. And it was in there. And it was in there. It was one of the dudes. Yeah, you're right. So let's see. What When? When was the Declaration of Independence adopted in 1770. Say more specific New York City. When?
1736 July 1.
Oh my gosh. Leila. celebrated every year

And this is one of the things that I liked the most was that he was the writer of Poor Richard's Almanac, which was an anonymous, he wrote under a pseudonym for Richard. So nobody knew it was him writing it. But that kind of also established the whole like, anybody is press. Yeah, even you can be anonymous and still be press. Cool. So It's it's really cool.
