Episode description

My guest is Dr. David Bradshaw, a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Kentucky. Today we had a conversation about his book "Aristotle East and West" This book traces the development of conceptions of God and the relationship between God's being and activity from Aristotle, through the pagan Neoplatonists, to thinkers such as Augustine, Boethius and Aquinas (in the West) and Dionysius the Areopagite, Maximus the Confessor and Gregory Palamas (in the East). The result is a comparative history of philosophical thought in the two halves of Christendom, providing a philosophical backdrop to the schism between the Eastern and Western Churches. 00:00:00 Intro 00:01:39 Becoming and Orthodox Christian Professor 00:07:27 What is The "Essence & Energies Distinction"? 00:15:02 What is "Divine Simplicity"? 00:26:27 What did Aristotle mean with "The Prime Mover"? 00:33:30 Difference "Logos" & "logoi" 00:41:12 Uncreated Energies & Creatures 00:47:28 Exodus 33:23 & The Glory of God 00:53:30 Apophaticism & Empiricism 00:55:38 Is the Thomistic "Actus Purus" faulty? 01:01:09 Pre-Nicaeane views on Gods Energies 01:08:06 Importance of Etymology
