The film has its origins in fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel and the dubious myth of Sawney Bean, the patriarch of a clan of Scottish cannibals. We discuss the varying interpretations and themes of the film including the Urbanoia apparent in the clashing of city and country dwellers, Judeo-Christian hypocrisy, and the mirrored monstrosity of the savage and civilized.
