I am Kyle Neighbors along with my co host Steve Susy. Here, we're ready to get you set
for Week six. It's incredible to think that we're already after this week, going to be two thirds of the way through the high school football season. SEUs Yeah, I mean hard, hard to settle, settle in with that fact when you consider, you know how it feels like it was maybe just a week or two ago that we were just starting this thing. I know, it just once you hit the accelerator, it just seems to keep going faster and faster. And we got a loaded, absolutely loaded Week six slate
to talk about today. But we're gonna have Michael Dweljack and Joe's even to join us first. Then Susan, I would get into the full week at sixth late later in the show, but before we do, make sure you go over to Friday Night Drive dot com and check out all of our content and podcasts we have available for you right now. You can follow myself on Twitter or x at Kyle Neighbors. You can find Suits on Twitter at the Suits. You can find Friday Night Drive at f and Drive. You can
also find Friday Night Drive on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Now, I'm gonna go ahead and bring Michael and because we've got a lot to get to today, and we're gonna start with the Catholic League in East Suburban Catholic Conference, where last week we got a real good look at just exactly how I see Catholic and Weed and Saint Francis are going to measure up against some of the top talent in this conference. Michael and they both perform better than
I think really anyone outside of the maybe those programs expected. Yeah, I mean both Icy Catholic and Saint Francis have really shows that they've been able to compete in this mega conference. I mean I see Catholic bet Ben at thirty four to nine to beat naz in overtime and then kept up and be you know Maris, which was a really impressive win in my eyes. You know both you know, a thirty three player team like Icy Catholic going against a
team like Maris that has around eighty one hundred kids on their roster. That's really impressive. And during my notebook this week, I caught up with Icy Catholic coach Bill Kraft and he talked about how, you know, they're getting to the point of not being able to physically be able to compete, you
know with these teams. You know, they got thirty three guys, and they've got guys going two ways, and you've got you know, teams like Maris and even Naz who have guys just go one way with the numbers they have, and this league is so brutal. So it's been a really interesting thing to watch Icy Catholic and Saint Francis too. You know, they beat Saint Lawrence, who's who's having a rebound year this year, forty three to twenty eight. They lost to Fenwick by one point, and they came back
to beat Juliet Catholic this past week thirty three to twenty eight. So I mean both teams have really shown that they can compete against the conference, but I'm really interested to see do they have what it takes to keep up in the fence where you know you can start off really well in this conference, and a lot of teams have. I in my statistics that I put together this week, a lot of teams started off really well three and two in
the first five weeks of the season. It's what happens in the second half of the season when you got to keep up every single week playing against the best in the state. They're really determined you know how good you're going to be in this conference. You can find that statistical notebook and break down from Michael over at Friday Night Drive dot com. You can also follow Michael on x at m DWO Jack ninety four and he's also on Instagram and threads.
Now, Michael, now that we're five weeks into this season, well, first off, before we head over to some of this prize teams, let's hit on your the matchup you get this week or just real quick because going back to Icy Catholic, they're coming off that when against Maris, it doesn't get any easier. You're gonna get to see an icy Catholic team, as you said, with thirty three kids on the roster against Loyola this week. That's next week. Oh, that's next week. I'm sorry, you're well,
then I'm gonna cut that out. Who do you have this week? I got Juliet Catholic and Marris. Okay, That's why I'm getting confused, because those are the two teams that lost last week. I'm thinking of Okay, coming back down in three two one, all right, Michael. Now that we're five weeks into or five weeks done in the regular season here, I think it's it's we got a large enough sample size that we can start to look through some of these teams in the CCL E SCC. Who would
you label as maybe the surprises of the of the season so far? Other than you know, I wouldn't say that I'm terribly surprised that I see Catholic in Saint Francis have been able to compete the way they have. But obviously there were some questions as to how they were able to, you know, adjust to the conference. But I think the two teams that I'm relatively surprised
about are both Montini and Saint Lawrence. I think Montini, you know, they're five and no best starts since twenty eighteen when they lost to Juliet Camp, like in the state championship game that year. But you know, talking to that program before the season, we heard a lot from the coaching staff about you know, Montini being being like we're back, Like we're you know, playing at the level we want to be playing. We've got all the resources we need. COVID kind of hurt us, and now we're back,
and I think you're starting to see that with Montini. Now, Montini has really put together a strong season. They've played some pretty good teams so far this year, so that five of those start is really good. And they've got two playmakers Alex Murray and George A. Say, who are really able to really run things for the Broncos and really kind of move things along for an offense that has actually been pretty impressive. Montini as a plus eighty five
point differentials so far this season. So Montini has been able to show that they're able to compete with a lot of teams, and I'm really interested to see how they're able to do that in the second half of the season. Now that they essentially have a playoff birth guaranteed. And Saint Lawrence is really interesting to meet too. There four and one right now, want to know
in the White and he's also in the White. But Saint Lawrence has been a team where it's been one of those situations where you know, coach am Neeson has been developing guys ever since he started there three years ago, and the senior classes is you know, first freshman class and they've been growing along the way. And Saint Lawrence has shown that they've got the playmakers, They've got the guys. Aaron Ball is really impressive right now for the Vikings.
He's doing a lot of great things as a playmaker for that team. So, you know, both Montini and Saint Lawrence are kind of my surprise teams. Carmel, I don't know if you'd call them a surprise team. I mean, Susan and I talked about at the beginning, you know, at the preseason podcast. We expect them to be good. I didn't expect them to hold up with Mount Carmel as long as they did until they eventually lost.
But I think Carmo is definitely also another team that maybe not as much of a surprise, but someone who kind of deserves to uh have its name out there. You can see Michael checking in with Live Live with Friday Night Drive on Friday evening from eight to eleven PM with host Jake Barnolston and Steve Susi. Uh you this week, Michael, you'll be covering Joliet Catholic and Maris. What are you thinking about this matchup? I think this matchup, you know, Maris is one in four so far, oh and one in
the green. Joliet Catholic is three and two, one to oh. But I think both teams essentially it's not a must win game, but I mean as a must win game for Maris. But Joliet Catholic doesn't need to win this game. But I think this is a game that both teams really need to have. Joliet Catholic already at three and two trying to prove that it deserves to be, you know, in those top twenty polls and those you know, upper echelon teams, and this would be a really good test for
them traveling to Maris. And Maris you know, they've had a really tough schedule. I think she said in one of the sweets that they have one of the tougher schedules in the season in the in the state. But you know, Maris has had it. They've been growing a lot. Like I said earlier, they've only got a few guys coming back from last year's teams. So this is a really big matchup for both teams, especially Maris.
You know they need to win out to make the playoffs. But for Joliet, because well they need to show that they can compete against the Class eight eight team travel to Chicago, you know, do all that stuff, and compete against the talent to defense in an offense as well. So you know, the records might not look great for this matchup, but you know it has a lot of interesting storylines and a lot of you know, things that could really impact what happens here as we head into the last three of the
season. All right, well, thank you for joining us this morning. Michael, all right, have it going, guys. All right, stick around everyone. We'll be right back with Joe Stevenson, who's gonna talk Fox Valley Conference and I'll matchup between Richmond Burden and Morris this week. This is State Representative Steve Reich and I'm happy to sponsor this year's Friday Night Drive. There'll be plenty of time for politics down the road, but for now,
let's enjoy some high school football. Whichever school you follow, give them your support. All right, everyone, welcome back into the Friday Night Drive podcast. Now we got Joe Stevenson joining us here to talk about everything in mckenry County football. Joe, how you doing. I'm doing well, doing real well. You got a good one on Friday night between Carry Grove and Prairie Ridge, with Kerry Grove going down and scoring in the final minute of the
game, only to miss the extra point. Prairie Ridge hangs on in the rivalry matchup twenty one to twenty. That's just that's how pr Carry Grove games should come down to the wire. Gal. Yeah. Even Pretty Ridge coach Chris Shrimp after they scored with two oh nine to go, he just he's and his defense had played so well on that and he says, you just kind of knew that that's what it was gonna come down to, that they
were going to go down and score. And you know, it was kudos to Carry Grove because Pretty Ridge in this game had the ball for thirty four minutes and thirty three seconds. Okay, that's a forty eight minute game. So they had the ball almost They possessed the ball almost three quarters of that game. And and Carry Grove going into the last drive had five first downs. Yet there they are right there, that close to going to overtime against
a really, really good team. And it says a lot about the battle and Carry Grove. But I love you know, I've seen Prey Ridge three times now against South Huntley and Carry Grove, and I really like the way this team plays. They get long drives. The defense has been again as far as like really meaningful touchdowns. I'm talking about like when the you know
the game is close. In five games, pray Ridge has given up one defensive touchdown the second half last week there was there were two touchdowns, but one of them was Andrew Prio from Terry Grove taking the kickoff ninety five yards for touchdowns. Feeling I was gonna say, coach Chris trap oh rap prayer
Ridge. Probably not that I'm not listening watching Tyler Facey rip up and down the field to set an NFL records fun, but you know, being able to get some defensive stops this year, I'm guessing coach Chris Trump's feeling a little bit better with the way the defensive playing compared to last year. Oh. Absolutely. And you know it's funny. You know, after the game there were a lot of a lot of alumni there and and Tyler Vasey,
who's up at Whitewater, which is not that far away. He was one of them who was there, and one of the assistant coaches after the game said, Hey, Tyler, see what we could do that as you graduated, we can actually have long drives because they had one drive of I think they had two drives that were like eight minutes long the other night, the one, the one that they scored the winning touchdown was was like eight minutes plus. And they did that against Hontley at the end too, they had
one about nine minutes. So yeah, it actually can work out in your favor in a way. Yeah, predict I mean you heard three clouds or three yards and a cloud at dusk. I mean that is kind of what the triple option offense is supposed to be. So get up there. I mean, how many how many twenty yard plus touchdown runs and Tyler vasy have last year? I don't remember, but I had he had fifty two I think for the year or something like that, and I would guess that most
of those were more than more than twenty. Yeah, it's crazy, crazy stats. Yeah, all right, Well let's let's move on to this week. And we got a match up between Richmond Burden and Morris. This was a game that if you remember last year, we talked about a lot. We were really excited for this game, and Richmond Burton took care of business I believe thirty four to seven. Yeah, thirty one to seven. It
was one to seven, it was twenty four to nothing. And and Morris actually i think got a turnover in a short field and was able to go in and score, and you thought, oh, well are they gonna now Now Richmond wouldn't have hapen And they went right back and scored. And then their their defense was really good. Yeah, they they handled them. And Morris at that point was ranked number one in five A. Weren't they SEUs I believe last year, And and yeah, Richmond really really took care of
them pretty good. So I'm sure that I'm sure that game didn't sit well with the Morris players. And I think this again has the potential to be a really good game. Morris is Morris is three and Richmond is four right in four A this week? Yes, so absolutely, yeah, I mean yeah, which which which pupp is that that has thoughts on Richmond Burton? Sorry, that is Willie. She just for a thoughts Willie. Willie is giving her pick for Richmond Burton. Morris and I'll pin you on this spot,
Joe, who are you taking in the game? Well, I think this was a really difficult game to pick. You know that Richmond Burton's going on the road this time, and you know, different teams. I just can't get past last year, you know, and how well Richmond and played and and so I picked Richmond Burton in this game. But I'm expecting it
to be a really good game and a lot closer than last year. Again, I love the way Richmond plays because you know they have they have the big hammer with Braxton Nelison, like two hundred and twenty pounds at fullback and he's leading our area and rushing right now like six hundred thirty yards or so. And Jack Martin's is a is a great big play guy for them. He doesn't get the ball a lot, but when he does, he takes her a long way, and then that defense is really good. One more
question for Joe before we get out of here. Make sure you follow Joe on Twitter at NWA Underscore Joe Prepson. You can find all of Joe's content at Friday Night Drive dot com and at and NW Herald dot com. Joe, you get a fun game on Friday between Hope Academy and Assumes. I'm gonna ask you for your opinion. I Hope here in a second, but Joe, Hope Academy and Mary and Central, this is certainly a to that I can't recall. Have these two teams face each other in a recent season.
They have not. I didn't think so. Yeah, So this is definitely a unique matchup and one that I'm really interested to see how it plays out on Friday. Yes, I just looked up my capsule. It is the first time that they met. Okay, yeah, it's the first time they met. Yeah, and it is a good it's a great matchup. And you know, Marion has kind of the toughest teams in the in the CCC coming up here in the last four weeks with Hope, Aurora Christian.
Both those teams getting votes in one A and Wheaton Academy getting votes in four A. So we'll we'll get a really good gauge on on how good Marian is. And Marian has to at least get one more win. But you know, the Hurricanes are still playing for the They're right in the thick of that conference title race without a loss in the Chicagoland Christian Conference right now. Yeah, and sus there's been some swagger from Hope this year. It's a
good program. What are you hearing about this team? You know, it's it's an interesting team. It's just last year I feel like they had a lot of explosiveness with head coach sun Judah Mallett, who's now at Iowa. I didn't know how much they'd be able to kind of continue that momentum from last year. They did have quite a few players back. Their quarterback Eddie Jenkins Junior, is kind of a really talented run pass type of guy who
is tough to kind of rain in, you know. But the thing that kind of opened my eyes with this year's version of the team is their ability to, you know, pick up that win over Wheaton Academy. Early in the year, I worried about Hope stability being a one A program, whether or not they'd be able to match up with some of the I guess, you know, big programs in the conference, if that makes a lot of
sense. These are smaller programs. But there's differences between a you know, a one eight team and a four eight team, you know, usually in terms of, you know, the ability to maybe not have quite as many guys going both ways. But that win kind of stepped up to me and said, you know, Hope's probably a little bit more than the middle of the pack team in this conference, is what I thought before the year, and I think they're legitimately in the mix to potentially win it. So this
is a pivotal game for both teams. In that quest, I think sus I was looking at their stats and they don't. It doesn't look like they throw the ball a lot, but boy, when they do, they throw it a long way. They must have some good speed because they got four guys averaging twenty yards per catch or better. Yeah, it's definitely it's definitely a home run type of offense that they run. And Hope, you know, if you're you're going to score touchdowns with this this the Eagles it's usually
going to be a double digit number on the Artish total. This is definitely not the kind of team that's putting together a fifteen play, you know, eighty two yard drive on you. They're gonna they're gonna look to attack at almost every given opportunity. All right, Joe, well, thanks for joining us. Enjoy Week six man, all right, great guys, chetch you later, all right, sus and I will be back everyone after a quick
commercial break to break down Week six top games to watch. This is State Representative Steve Reich, and I'm happy to sponsor this year's Friday Night Drive. There'll be plenty of time for politics down the road, but for now, let's enjoy some high school football. Whichever school you follow, give him your
support. Okay, welcome back now to the Friday Night Drive Podcast. I am Kyle Neighbors along with Steve SUSI, sus, We're gonna hit on a few games here before we wrap it up and get ready for Week six. Josh Welgi and Jake Barleston hit on this game in the Western Western Suburbs edition of the Friday Night Drive Podcast. But I'd be remiss not to mention the hundred and fifth meeting this week between Batavia and Geneva. Batavia at four and
one heading to five and Old Geneva. I'm really looking forward to seeing this one suits Yeah, me too. And it's one of those situations when you look at what Geneva has done this year, really really putting together a solid
campaign. But for them, I mean, this is a huge rivalry game and it's a game that they have not performed exceptionally well in over the last decade or so, So you know, for them, they want to step up and prove that they belong in this conversation as either the top or one of the top teams in the duqueing and to do that, that road always goes directly through when you play Batavia and how you do in that game.
So it's a it's a measuring stick stick game for Geneva. They've already proven they're a very good team, they're five and oh they've done that, But now how good is this Geneva team are they should do they belong in that conversation of a top ten program in the state right now or are they not quite there yet? And I think this game will tell us a lot in answering those two questions, we got a matchup between two five and O team.
We got a lot of good matchups this week, and this one is near the top of my list SEUs with Dowters Grove North and York matching up here at five and oh. You got Dotters Grove North coming off a seven win season a second round playoff appearance last year. The Trojans looked really good off to this five and oh start with a win over Glenbard West kind of, and we can Saint Francis as the two really one big ones that stand out so far. York is just really doing well all season long. Here,
I'm taking York to win this game. Shu's I really really like the Dukes. I think the bigger question for me here and maybe I'm gonna just make wrong. Maybe the Trojans will pull it up. But I want to see how close downs Grove North keeps this game because I'm trying to figure out right now, like is this a team that can make it deep into the playoffs pass the second round this year? You know, it's it's a very
interesting game on a lot of perspectives. I feel like, you know, while York has really kind of rambled through the early portion of their season. You know, they've they had a good schedule to start the year. There are some marquee names on there, but some of those teams that they've beaten so far, maybe you're not performing at the level that I think a lot of people anticipated that they would. So I don't know. I don't think there's I don't think there's a really you look at it here. I don't
know if there's a maybe about it. You're right, I mean they one and four, one and four, two and three, one and four, one and four, But you're talking about against teams like NAZ Glenn Brooks House, start of the year, Oak Park, River Forest in Sale Central. So yeah, so have they had a test? I mean, that's kind
of what I'm asking right now, is you know, is York. I think your's a very good football team, don't get me wrong, but at this point in time, I think there are very few, you know, golden stars you can give them for the opposition that they've played so far in terms of a quality wins on their schedule. I don't doubt that they can
earn those. It's just that I don't think they've had them yet so, and I think this is an opportunity for them to kind of, you know, pick up a win over a program that is obviously performing well, kind of at their optimum level, I think. And this is a good team. I don't think they're getting quite possibly the recognition that they deserve to be, kind of getting lost in the clutter of York being so good. So I'm sure Downer Drove North wants to prove that they belong in the in the
conversation for winning that conference title. Obviously, these are the two favorites now after the way things have gone through the first five weeks. Yes, absolutely, these are the two favorites. You look back now Glenbard West or Doner Northward thirty one seven win over Glenbard West. York here with an interesting three week stretch now would excuse me with Downers Grove North, Glenbard West and Lion before closing out the regular season would provide the West. Uh sus, Let's
go ahead and move on. Though. There are a bunch of five and old matchups this week. We mentioned Richmond, Burden and Morris earlier. Any others that you're really paying close attention to this week? You know there are a couple in smaller school divisions that I'm interested in. Lena Winslow is playing Duran Pecatonica this week. It's one. Those are two of the three teams that are still undefeated in the Northwest Upstate. A line I along with forreston
that should that should I favor Lena in that game. I always favor Lena in pretty much every game they play, but I'll be interested to see how that factors out. I mean, the fun thing about this week when you look at it across statewide, there are six games this week where five and oh teams playing another five and oh team. But on top of that, there's another thirteen games where a five and oh team is playing a four and
one team. So we've got nearly twenty games where obviously two teams are playing each other that are playing at the top of their game right now. And I talked about it with you briefly early in the week about how loaded Week six is. I mean, I keep a board over here to my right. You can't see it, obviously we're talking on a podcast, but where I keep the games that are interesting to me over the course of that week.
I keep a kind of like a notepad over there. There's usually about thirty games on the board that I just want to kind of keep an eye on see what's going on with them. On Friday night. There are sixty two games on that board this week, so I mean that kind of speaks to the depth and quality of the matchups of this week. It's really really
crazy. I'm looking here at the new Page Valley Conference and talking about we get a rivalry matchup here this week between Naperville Central and Naperville North at North Central College where that game's usually played in front of a huge crowd. Naperville Central comes in at four and one, Naperville North at three and two. I'm trying to make the determination here when you start looking at comparative results, and I'm trying to figure it out how I think this conference plays out.
Suits you got Naperville Central at the top, Niqua Valley just took the loss of Naperville Central, but Niqua Valley also beat Naperville North. So I'm sitting here going well as Central far and away better than the rest of this conference. And I'm not so sure that because I still like Naporville North, and I even though Niqua Valley is now at two and three. Yeah, I think the Wildcats find a way to pull it together here down the stretch.
Suits Yeah, it's it's very interesting when you kind of look at the du page from top to bottom. You know, Naporville North, in my opinion, is a really really good football team. You look at that record, it's three and two, but I mean one of those losses is to Loyola in week two. You know, they had that crazy win over Bowling Brook, you know, early in the year. I think it's a really really good football team, you know. And Naperville Central is to their credit,
they're doing what they need to do there. I mean that lone loss coming to Lockport. But they've had some I guess, some squeakers against some teams that you know, maybe are not that you know, high profile on paper. I mean, barely beating Hinsdale Central, who's one and four to start the season, edging out Plainfield North, you know, six to three, Plainfield North below five hundred. To their credit, the RedHawks are doing what they have to do to win. But you know, pound for pound,
are they better than Naperville North. I don't know if they are. I mean, that's it's a Niqua Valley, I'll be honest, is probably one of the most confusing teams around to me, you know, I just I really don't know how to gauge how they're going to be on a week to week basis just kind of inconsistent all over the place. I mean, you do you have to take into account that, you know, the team with the worst record on their schedule that they've played so far as Naperville North,
that is than they're three and two right now. I mean they've played Linkin Way East in week three, Oswego, Manuka, Naperville Central are the other teams on their schedule. Their schedule thus far has been ridiculous. Obviously for them, it kind of makes a downward shift now into being a little bit more reasonable the rest of the way. So that makes you believe that they're probably still a playoff team even though they're two and three right now. But
the path is there for them to get to five wins. So but really kind of confusing on the grand scheme of things, what you're going to get from from NIKU a week to week. I mean, just look at their season point total. They've scored forty one points through five games and they're two and three. I mean they've been They've They've given up almost twice as many points. Eighty two points is not a bad point total will have given up this so far this year. But when they only scored half, when you've
only scored half as much, that kind of speaks to the problems. So it's, you know, it's one of those things when you look at their schedule, you look at who they've played, but you still I can't get a good read on them at all. They're they're, like I said, one of the more confusing teams to try to evaluate on a week to week basis because the results are just kind of all over the map. Did Moments
get rid of the redskin nickname? No, I'm looking, so I went over one of the game that I wanted to preview was Moments Alt four five and Moments, which shocking that they're five and ozho one Salt four can. I just noticed I was just confirming records, and I noticed the nickname listed on the HSA website has Moments Athletics post in the football database and the HSA school directory. So yeah, if if you notice, like with all of
those schools, now that have American mascots only one that they don't. They've never done anything, and in regards to just kind of ignoring its existence as nicmas everybody else, they've kind of like pulled them down. And I don't know if that was because somebody asked them too, and they're just like, well, we're not gonna we're not gonna fart around with them. But no, they didn't get rid of it. Oh Okay, I just wondering if I'm like saying I went to school there, grew up there, I'm like,
how the hell did I miss that nude? Okay, that makes that makes more sense, all right, Well, so yeah, how about that moment Salt Fork matchup suits? Yeah? I mean it's it's one of those things when I look back at the way I have kind of evaluated teams coming into the season and look at where they're at right now. One of the big, you know, swing of that ledger would be moments three and six last year to my understanding of what they had returning talented but really kind of
young and inexperienced, have an explosive quarterback and Eric Castillo. But the biggest thing for me about moments this year defense have really been throwing up some good defensive numbers against you know, some some programs that are pretty decent. And the eye opening win for me was over Westville. They won that game comfortably in Week three, Westville's only loss of the season thus far. And Westville has beaten some of the teams that they have coming up on their schedule,
including this Salt Fork team. Westville has already beaten those teams, so the path for moments to potentially win them Vermillion Valley Conference is definitely there. And if you would have told me that at the beginning of the season, I would have bent my head to the side and looked at you funny, because I just didn't see that in the cards every year. This might be a fun let's let's maybe do this on Monday series. I'm gonna write this down
to remember. I want to put together a list of our like top five surprise team for the year two thirds of the season, because well, met certainly is on that list, and I want to say I'll offhand, I can't really think of anything, but I'm sure if I start looking through stuff, I'll come up with it pretty quickly. So anyone who joined us on Monday for the Week six wrap up, we'll have that for you. But see as before we get out of here, you got any final thoughts for
us? You know, I talked about it before. Just the sheer volume of really good football games this week is something that we just don't ordinarily have. I mean, there's usually kind of a balance of, Hey, you know, there's a couple of good games over here and a couple of good games over there, but then there are some that you know, really aren't
all that exciting. But it seems like all of the teams that have been off to a good start and you know, have strong records at this point of the season, they're all congregating against one another this week and that should make for just a fascinating week of learning so much more about these teams and
how they stack up. And you know, we're two thirds of the way done with the regular season after this week is completed, which seems crazy to me, But you know, it definitely has been fun to this point, and I don't expect Week six to me any different. All this sounds like a perfect reason to make sure that you tune in to Live with Friday Night Drive from eight to eleven PM on Friday Night with host Jake Barleston and Steve Susy. They will be falling along with all of the action. Then stick
