Cathrine drømte om New York fra hun var utvekslingsstudent i USA som 17-åring. Etter å ha jobbet noen når som grafisk designer for magasinet Tique i Norge, dro hun i 1987 over til New York, tok fotoutdannelse på International Center of Photography og begynte som assistent for Arthur Elgort.
