and it's like unidentifiable and like it's floating in the air. Yeah. I'm like, you know, the presidents, they they've seen the pictures, you know, or someone higher up in the whatever you want to call it um association of whatever. Like I feel like the pictures are there and they have to wait fifty years for them to release the pictures. But then the aliens are going to be like kicking in with us, and we're gonna be like, oh, okay, we already know what you look like. You look
like unimpressed. Yeah, but that's scary, Like, oh my god, what if aliens got like a tinder? Would you would you date an alien? But I screw an alien? Yeah? How would I screw an alien? Oh? Yeah, that's it's kind of scary. Like look like it's just funny because it's like I remember when we were kids, is We're like, there's gonna be flying cars and you know, aliens are gonna come, and now it's like all kind of happening. It's like, oh yeah,
it's crazy. The future is crazy. We're literally living in the future. We're gonna our Judy Jetson Rack is that her name? The jets They something They do have some sounds of aliens. Oh, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. I will do this aliens. But love is automatic. But this ya, I'm trying to zucker. Honestly, I was trying to find the scene where like remember where they like are hearing the noises and it's like I was like this whole time we were talking, I'm
playing audio. I was trying to find it, but I can't find it on you too? No is that? Oh so we are Disney Channel Original Girl. Oh my god, girl the twenty first century. If the aliens look like him, sure I do an alien and the zqual Okay, yeah, oh my god. That movie was so fire. I won't have to watch I know Raven her as her bestie. I remember like just having an anxiety watching when I don't know, when I like showed their house and like
they're just like, I don't know, they're like floating in space. And it was like that little circular too that they're just living in and then like bits and pieces started breaking off. I don't know that always getting anxiety as kid. I was like, oh my god, gird come down to earth. Remember she had like the little disc earrings, you know, I always wanted those. She was fresh, she was fresh, her girls, you know, Oh my god. I literally thought, you're already no way,
no way, breaking news. For the record, this is just zoom zo zoom, like Yeah, aliens are out here. They've probably been out here. It's like, do we want to fuck with aliens? Are they gonna fuck with us? Are they gonna try? But you know what, the government probably been fucking with aliens. But the government is aliens alright, inception, you just went through a layer a little Wow, they are listening to us. No sweet just popped up someone for UFOs are real? Okay?
Are they gonna pay my rent? Should we throw a party? Should we invite billahadid? Why beladied? I don't know what is their plan for student debt? Literally, I have a theory about that student debt. He's gonna it's gonna be They're gonna wash it all the way right before, right before Joe Biden leaves. Anyways, I think so oh yeah, oh yeah, you keep dreaming, just gonna keep streaming dreaming. guys know, I don't pay hospital bills. So I'm just like, okay, what's the big They'll die with your studolos, Like, what's gonna happen? What's gonna happen? Let's talk TV and just quick reminder that the Writer's Guild of America is still on strike as well as the actors. They need to do right by these writers. We linked it in the last podcast episode. We're probably do it again. Just their whole proposal of like what they wanted and how it's old rejected. Oh but I do want
to give a shout out real quick to the Rock. You know, while everyone is on strike, a lot of these writers and actors are not making enough money to pay rent provide for their families. So they did start a SAG after a relief fund, and Dwayne the Rock Johnson gave a historic seven figure donation. They said, it's the largest single donation that we've ever received
from one individual, one individual at one time. And I was reading some other article about like how it's going to help like thirty to fifty actors and writers like pay their rent that month or something like that. It was a huge help to everyone. Big up to the Rocks, who is from Hayward. We claim him, Okay, I think he was probably like just born in Hayward and lived there for a little bit. But still Heyward Don Dwayne the Rock Johnson doing big teams. We did get a really good movie this
past weekend, and we're going to talk about it. Barbie, wait, did you see it? I did see it, and I want to go see it again. I know, Oh my gosh, it was literally so good. So for me, like when I try to avoid all the reviews, but the ones I like, obviously couldn't help it seeing because everyone's posting about it left and right. For me, I feel like I saw the majority of it being it's a great movie. It's a great movie. It's a great movie. And the only ones that were on the other side,
no one said it was bad. But there was a few that were like, it was really weird. That's what my boyfriend so irritated with him. I'm like, you're just a hater. Everyone keeps saying it was really weird. I think it's because like you didn't expect her to be like in Barbie Land like that. She was like she wakes up and like turns her shower on and like no water is coming out because she's a Barbie Land sonny can't take a real shower. She's like tries to drink her coffee and like she's
sipping it but nothing comes out. It's fake. Last, which I think that that was dope, especially if you're someone that like grew up with Barbies. I definitely was more of my brat's air. Uh, but I'm sure like even throughout the movie, there's just like a bunch of Easter eggs to like these discontinued Barbies and just like the Barbie world. So I mean, I guess we're giving semi spoilers, but basically what happens is Margo Robbie is
stereotypical Barbie. She lives in Barbie Land, and she starts having these like weird thoughts of like she's like, hey, guys, like why haven't if we just died right now or something like that, Like you guys ever think about death? And everyone's like, witch, what are you talking about? Is Barbie Land? Everything's perfect. One iconic line. I was like, Wow, this is gonna be my new motto. But it's girls' night every night, yeah, forever and ever. Yeah, I don't know that's a
direct call, but yes, every night is girls' night, bitch. Everyone should live by that. So and they it comes to find out, they're like, okay, well you need to go talk to weird Barbie to figure out why you're having these thoughts. And weird Barbie is the Barbie that you would like cut her hair and like fuck her up with markers. Right, That's why she's weird because like her owner like played with her too hard. Yeah. Right, So yeah, she's just like constantly in a split.
Yeah yeah, yeah, she did great. Um, so you know she talks to word Barbie and they're like, what the hell's going on. They're like, okay, you need to go to the real world and figure out why your owners being weird and putting these thoughts in your head because it's fucking shut out. Yeah, so they go do that whatever. So so, so her going back and forth between Barbie Land and then the world world, and like obviously in Barbie Land like women, yeah, women rule the world.
Like Barbies are perfect. Everyone's perfect. I mean, no one ages, no one does anything because he's there. Even that's another stuff that starts going bad, Like it's like, oh my god, I have cellulite and like I can't stand on my tippy toes anymore. Like things are starting to be not perfect for her, you know, there's like little signs and then like she obviously has these thoughts about death. So when she goes to the World World, she's like shook to her core, yeah, because she's like
what atriarchy? Man's disgusting ruling the world? Like why is the president or why are like why why are all these men rule? Like they go to places Mattel, you know, the owners of Barbie. I'm like it's a little farell and like a bunch of dude. So she's like, can I talk to the president? He's like that's me yea, Like no old man here, you know. But so Ken sneaks in with her to go to
the World World and Ken is like creaming his pants. He's like, man, role, like what no one tell me anything about this is the patriarchy? Like I gotta go back and tell the other can about this um So that that's pretty much the premise of it. Um and America Ferre is like ends up being Marcot Robbie's owner, and like they're figuring out why she's like drawing her this way and like putting these thoughts in her head. Um her little moment with her with her daughter. So it was the movie was like
a love letter to womanhood. Thank you, thank you. The scene there's like a really short scene. It's it's it's like even in the beginning, and I swear, like inside I wanted to like start balling. But the scene where she's in the world world just for a little bit of time. She's like sitting at the bus stop and she sees the older woman and she just like stares at her and then just says, like you're so beautiful because she's never seen an older woman in her life. Yea, and like it,
Margot. Margot kills it like she perfect. She was a perfect Barbie. But the way she portrayed like someone who doesn't know how to deal with any emotions. It is like this fake as plastic person and like finally but like finally feeling things and like I don't know, like being in contact with stuff that she's never heard of before, Like she never cried before, like there's so much stuff in the worldld that she's like, what the hell is
this? Like what is crying? What is doing this? She acted in her ass off and like someone like you could tell she's witnessing these things for the first time basically, and she did that perfectly, like you could tell she's someone who wow that. Like I saw her and I was like, this is genuinely your first time crying. The way she looked at that older woman and like was so in awe and then just said, you're so beautiful.
Yeah. I almost wanted to start crying because like obviously, like aging is a no no in our roles, you know, like it's just it's one of the real things that we have to accept and deal with them. It's not it's not real in Barbie world, because they're just they're all Barbies. They're like, I'm young, I'm hot and beautiful. Like but for her to be like a perfect person, sterotypical Barbie to see aging for the first time and her first thought is you're so beautiful. She's not like,
oh my god, what's happening to your face? Or what is this? Yes, yes, yes, it was so beautiful. I wanted to like start crying right away, and it's like it's the shortest scene ever. I felt that. I felt that. I really love how they also tied in the creator of Barbie. I think her name is Ruth or something, but like they have someone acting to be the creator of her and then like, okay, guys, spoiler or you know what we do on this podcast. I love spoil everything. But in the very end, we oh, I
don't, We'll get there. We'll get there. We'll get there with her auto go like talking about the edge as yet. Uh no, yeah, Margo eight down so great. Um the cameos. First of all, John Alifa like popping up I don't know where, like just the ola. Yeah. Michael Sarah, I'm sorry. He was like the perfect Allen, which is like the one other like man Barbie that they ever created and supposed to be like Ken's friend. I don't know, it wasn't a video. Was
like literally like the only other male. Yeah, and it's like he could fit all of Ken's clothes, Like he's like literally just like Ken's sidekick bestie. And I mean, Michael Sarah is just fucking hilarious. He played that perfectly. Um, I hate this is such like a like I said, this movie is a love letter to womanhood, like it's so big on feminism, so I hate for this to be my main takeaway. But I'm sorry. Ryan fucking Gosling the goat ate down. He stole every scene, Like
I h everything he said. Me and I took my friend Christina. We like were bursting out laughing. There was one thing where we literally like were like we might have to step out theater because we cannot control our laughter. I think it was a dance number. Yes, yea, the small Parker is so funny. I'm sorry. He was the perfect ken Yeah, like he actually deserves um, what is it supporting actor? Yeah, he needs
an actor and an oscar for this. I was show good he was, and like it's so funny because you remember that like Ryan Gosling was a Disney baby, like because he is hitting that dance number and it is just so hilarious the little stuff he's saying, like, oh, I was really talked about the patriarchy that I found out it isn't about horses. He has like this weird obsession with horses, even the see where they're like going to fight and they're like galloping in like I was just on my back, um Easter
Ray who was the president of Barbie. So there's just like the scene in the movie where okay, so basically all the girls Ken comes back and he fucks up Barbie Land. The patriarchy is taking over, and all the other Barbies are in on it like they're they're like they're being they're brainwashed, yeah, by the men. So their idea is to and this is where it's like a very obvious, like at the beginning of the movie, it's very complicated. You're kind of like, what is the plot? What is going
to happen in this Barbie film? And then it kind of kicks into gear where it's very clear, you know, the Kens took over Barbie Land. They January six, that motherfucker, okay, and they basically took over, and all the other Barberies except for Stereotypical Barbie go along with this whole patriarchy
thing. So Stereotypical Barbie, who is Margo, has to figure out a way to deep program all the other Barbies first to bring them back, and then you know, once they do that, they'll take over Barbie Land and bring it back to what it used to be so I will say the way they distract their kens to deep program the other barbies. It was just like a very obvious sequence, like the movie very much said men are so simple
and dumb. These are ways that we can manipulate them, Like I don't know what are some of their like tactics to deep program the barbies, like what is okay? Like you're gonna go ask this guy about finances because you know, guys can't shut the fuck up if you ask them, like how do I manage my money? So like that's how you're gonna check that one. He's a raise. Basically, he's a raised. Job is to go up to the guy and ask him, are you watching the Godfather? But
the way she says Godfather the line delivery alone was like Oscar Worthy. Wait, I definitely thought of you when that scene because I love the back and it's just like any man, think of the most annoying man you know that will not shut the fuck up about a movie and like has to over explain it to you, like they saw that scene and they're still ruined right now. Like if you ask a man about The Godfather, his response is one
going to be longer than the movies three hour runtime guaranteed. Oh my god, are you watching The Godfather? Like the way she pronounced it, like there was no period in between God and Father, that was genius. Shout out to Easter Ray. I mean she was very like she wasn't in a lot. Uh yeah, so good. Okay, let's talk about America forever now, by the way, I love America, you guys. Short side story about America Ferrera. But like when I was really young, I saw
an interview about her, not about her, but she was. She was doing an interview and they asked her what age she wants to be forever, and she said she would pick thirty. And like literally all my life and tells a little girl, I always wanted to be thirty. And like as I grow older, like I have cousins that are because I me and Chris have like older cousins. We're probably like the only ones our age. Yeah,
we're like the younger ones. Yeah. So like we grew up around cousins that are like a little bit older, but they always been like coultas. But like as I've gotten older, like my cousins are always making jokes about how like they're so old because they're thirty or like just scared to become that age or whatever. I like. For me, I've never had that thought, like I've always wanted to be thirty because of America Frera since I was a little girl. Yeah, so love her down And didn't you link
up with her or something? Yes, they have because they keep changing the name. But she heard Eva Lengoria like started this UM. It's basically like this group for Latina woman and we're supposed to like come with ways to like help people vote, like how we could get people to the polls UM and like every once in a while that like hop on a FaceTime with us. I actually haven't done it in a long time. I like always signed up for the meetings and just haven't got on UM. But anyways, love her
down. And I remember before watching this movie trying not to look at the reviews, a lot of people had a lot of praise for like America Farrs like monologue and everything and like how great it was and how she killed it. Yeah, Okay. While I was in the theater, there was also this guy next to me. I hate when people chew with their mouth open, and this guy was snacking during the monologue. So maybe that's it, But honestly, I didn't really do that much for me. I'm sorry it
was you know, I liked it. I agreed with everything she said, like for sure as properable, But I wasn't like they moved by the scene. I guess I wasn't like, wow, yeah, yeah, yeah, give my girl an oscar. Yeah no, And I feel like they don't Hella blew enough that way. I mean it was a powerful statement, sure, yes, nonetheless, but it was it was even throughout my week, I've been like going back to some of the stuff she said, or just
my everyday life being reminded of some of the stuff she said. I don't know, maybe the guy did ruin it for me. I guess I was expecting to be like super mood by her delivery and I'd be like, give her an oscar right now. But I don't know, I gotta go rewatch it. I gotta watch it. Maybe I'm put on my feet of my mouth. Yes, I feel like they needed that character to like kind of tie in the real world. Um. Yeah, she was cool. She was cool. My favorite parts, though, were just whenever they were own
Barby Land, like I wanted to be there the whole time. That was that was the most fun. It was fun, right, it was so like, oh, it was just it was so pretty to watch, like everything was fake and like beautiful and perfect. And I watched all the fucking interviews with Greta Gerwig and like just what they did to create this world was insane. And I even read that or saw an interview with her save um
for the backup people or the um like the extras or whatever. They're all dancers, because dancers hold themselves a certain way, so they're all like very intentional and that's just what a barbie is. Like their their fucking back is straight, their heads up, they are like even if they're just like drinking their coffee or something, they're doing like they they're doing something like a dancer
would do, you know. So just the detail that went into this and the wigs, the wig, the wigs, like there were so many wings, like just like you don't think about that, but like I don't know. I'm like I have like a drag mindset now a little bit, just from watching Hell of drig Ras. I'm like, bitch, this should make that fair wig costume, Like that is mother fucking work. Where's the wig lady? Yes, and I'm I don't want to us boiled and for sure,
but it definitely was beautiful. What were you going to say about Okay, okay, just how um the o Yeah, the kind was like the creator was like, okay, barbe like Barbie is an idea and Barbie just has this moment and she's like, well, you know, I don't want to be an idea. I want to be the one making I don't know, I want to be the person making the ideas and creating it. So like I'm want to be a person in the real world, Like I want to go in the real world and you know, have an idea and then
actually put action towards it and make something and create something. But if I'm in Barbie world, I'm just I'm just the idea. And I was like, damn, that is that is life in a nut motherfucking shell. Like you can either have a dream and do nothing with it, or have a
dream and like you know, and and act upon it. You know, And that's the scariest, hardest part of life is acting upon your dreams or that little that little was in the back of your mind but you're afraid what people are gonna say, you know, but I mean this woman, Ruth, she created this Barbie doll. I was just watching an interview with her too, like the actual woman, and she, um, it's funny.
She she she named the but she made Barbie after her, after her daughter, Barbara, And this was like I don't even know what year, but this was like you know, years ago, fifty years ago or something, and it was funny. Her Her daughter was like kind of mad about it because she was like, well like or she was. She was kind of mad at her mom because her mom was, um always working. She was
always working. She was, you know, starting Mattel or not Mattel, but like Barbie, and she was working in and she's like, well, why why can't my mom And this is like in the fifties, sixties, I don't know, and you know, why isn't my mom like home with me. Well, she's out working. So it's just like it's kind of
ironic. She got like actually flak for for being a I don't know a future woman who was like has a job or like it's all about her career, such a I don't know a double standard to think about for women like you want to be the mom, but you gotta be the worker. But you gotta like provide for your family, but you also want what is your dream into? Yeah, like what do you America? Did that? I know it was a moment. It was a moment. I really want to
watch the movie. I really did too, And again, don't want to call it weird, but it kind of was. It was just like, this movie is making me feel things. And maybe because I was with my friend and that guy smacking his food, hello loud. I wasn't straight up bawling at the end, but I did. I wasn't getting tearyed and almost wanted to cry. My friend out of the hand was crying her ass off.
But yeah, there's a scene at the end where it's like a montage of it's not necessarily a Barbie's having a moment, but and she's having these
flashbacks, but it's not of her life. It's like this montage of just womanhood, like yes, random women, oh yes, you know, these characters probably weren't even in the movie at all when there were kids and when they're growing up and like saying height to their kids, like you don't even know who you're watching so it's like, why am I feeling all these things? Why do I want to cry right now? Watching this montage? It
was apparent child relationship. It was different like mothers and their daughters like like swinging them around or pushing them on the swing or them. It was like just ohn't want to think about It was like literally just like about being a woman and like how we just like go through life. It literally when I was watching and I was just like, this is life, Like, yeah, maybe you're the mother, maybe you're the daughter, and these are like
things he got through. It was just so beautiful and like I'm gonna get emotional, but like my friend she's going through a really hard time because her aunt is like as cancer and it is like passing away. So like that seemed like fucked her up, and she like literally texts me she was like me and my mom was gonna go watch it again. And then she's like my mom bawling, like volt just like going up crying because it's like you do just think about life in that scene. I don't know. It was
just really beautiful, like the only way I could describe this movie. It truly was like a love letter to woman. Yeah, and like womanhead. Yes, maybe like maybe feel or maybe just remember like what it meant to be human, you know, right, but specifically womanhood, yes, like and that end scene is right, the montage of all those little different situations
is like that that ship gets overlooked. Yeah, it's like simple exactly, Like, yeah, it's just like being a human and all of us are like connected to humans and other ways, and everyone has different relationships with people. Like it was crazy. You guys got to watch it. It was truly a beautiful film, but also like funny as hell. I think I feel like I was laughing the whole time, and when I wasn't laughing, I wanted to cry. Yes, like those are the only two mutions I
felt each and every scene. Yeah, it was gorgeous through and through. I can't wait to see it again. Yeah, and Margot definitely up there with one of her best performances. I think I still think it. Tania is her best performance. Everyone watched. Iitania if you haven't Tania Harding story, but this is definitely up there. And our girl needed a w honestly, because you know she was she was going to take us some else back to back, so she needed this one and she hit a home run,
so I'm happy for her. Ryan motherfucking Gosling hilarious. The goat, I guess could have used to like obviously, he is the heart throb. He's in all the you know rom coms. Yeah, all serious movies. I haven't really seen sad. Yeah, and I know there's other ones that I can't even like think of. So I played the perfect Ken. Also,
Ken is also named after Ruth, the creator's son. Yeah. Those kids cute, um, But yeah, I can't help I hate to be like man, this movie made me take round Gostling more seriously for some reason, just because, like I do love crazy stupid love obviously the Notebook, but like here, I'm like you an act horse, sir, Like you were cracking me up every time you'round screen. He was like the perfect dummy,
so good. I do love that too, Like it wasn't I think there are some people hating on it, like I mean all the in cells in the world, just like, oh this is it time in and like Ken was just there or whatever. But I do love that. That's the point. There was no like relationship. She like didn't love he said, we want to be a boyfriend. Girlfriends like, kenn, what does that mean? Girls? Girl, She's stupid. I know. The end, she's
like apologizing. She's just like, maybe it isn't girl's ride every night. You're like and then he like he's always trying to kiss her and she never wants to kiss up. She was like that I love, but she didn't really like it was more like on a friend note, because I remember he tries to kiss her and she's like a friend, don't push it. Yeah, no, it's great. Go watch Barbie. I literally I'm probably gonna go watch it again, maybe this weekend so I can get a good cry
properly this time. Wait, one thing I wanted to add, So the end, like you were either bawling or fighting back your tears, right, very emotional. Just picture you in the theater crying, and then all you hear is and I'm that like a bobby Literally this this person was working. She has a part time pilate's instructor, so she's all about that fitness life. So she made us all go to a soul cycle class and then the plan was sole cycle and then brush and she like maybe get the bike right next to her. And honestly, I haven't worked
out in a minute. So I was a little nervous because I've done cycling classes before, not a soul cycle, but I've been to a cycle bar Berkeley's your first soule cycle class. I've never been. This is scary. Well, okay, so my friend is instructor at Cycle bar Berkeley, which is basically sole Cycling Berkeley, and that one kicked my ass. But it was lit like I remember the lights one out. It was like only red lights and like it was intense. I remember, like you played bad Bunny,
Like that shit was lit like it was like a club. But I I also died. But I remember when I went to his class, I definitely was hungover, so pursual, It's like all was not hungover. I was like, I woke up, drink my Wrning coffee, had my little protein bar, drink some water. I was like, whatever, let's let's get ready to die. I meet up with them. It's na yea, my best friend, her mom, her step dad, her little sister, her cousin who I'm all like super close to her sisters, so cute.
She bought us all like, um the wristbands and the headbands and like different colorful ones, so we all got to pick. I was like, oh my gosh, this is so cute, so we go in. Honestly, I fucking killed it. Yeah, Like it wasn't until the probably like close to the end. He kept making us turn the resistance up like until we like basically cannot move our legs anymore. So I was like, okay, I have to go the Parrama concert, Like I have to leave at five. It's like two pm now. But there was an anthropology so I was like, I definitely want to stop at anthrow and this is one of Polo Alto. This
is I held a nice anthropology vig. Luckily I was like semi bro because I would have wasted all my money there because there was like a whole second floor that had like the whole home, Like the furniture is there, like all the stuff I usually see online, don't get Okay, these hoops are from anthropology. definitely stopped in and I got ready. But the worst part, my job's still in my like paramore clothes, my little black booty shorts is out of pocket as black T shirt and these boots made for walking. So I could have called my car's at my friend Christina's house, so I could have called a lift art to go get it. But while I'm leaving and the lifts driving, I realized I don't have my keys, and I'm like, I
know exactly where they're at there in Christina's cupholder in the passenger side. Never I had asked you the night before, like are my goladd leave my glass? Santos. Oh yeah. It all came back to me that, like I put everything in that cupholder in Christina's car. So I messes Christina, but she's at work. So I had to go to her job with the walk of shame looking like I've belong on East fourteenth bitch. And it's so funny because I know she was watching me because she goes, no one's here,
cool, no one's here. So I come, bitch, the whole outside is packed, everyone has a table, and I'm hurt the way her job works, like it's mostly outside, there's a small inside, so you could like I basically I'm like, okay, I'm just gonna be line it to the door right there, like head down, like no one can see me. And I have to walk through like people's tables to go there, and i'd be line it there and it says like, please use the other
door. I'm like no, no, I gotta like walk found these other set of tables and like I finally got her, She's like I just saw that whole thing. You just be lined it and like I could just see everything that's going on in your head, and I'm just like so embarrassed. And Christina obviously puts it on extra thing. Like right when I'll walk in, she's like, who's this horror walking in? Like I'm just like telling
her, like, excuse my horror friend. You guys, I'm like, I hate yeah, because she knows I'm hating this because it literally looks like walk of shame. But she is a real one. I got there, like obviously, I'm super hungover. She makes me the Patters and Sandley Andrew everyone go there. It's so bomb. She's made me a bombas bond me sandwich. I love me a bond me. She made me Vienneme's iced coffee. She like parted me some coke like something with bab bulls. She like
cooks me up with the whole mill to feel better. We're chilling. So like we go to her apartment and she knows I look like a horse, so she gives me like slides to put on to get out those stupid ass booze and like some backup shorts. just in case I see anyone like rolls us some joint. She makes me a bomb ass smoothie, like she literally took care of me. I felt so much better after leaving, Like the smoothie does something to me. The smoothie was bomb not gonna lie, Yeah, she really is. I know. It was like almond butter and like blueberries, bananas. She put like a little bit of cinnamon powder at the end. I don't know what, but it was. It was the best smoothie I ever had in my life.

Like my family they know, like if I haven't vitamin water, they're like actually hung over because she has a vitamin water, Like they know that is my go to. I do that. Oh my god, there's literally here doesn't say caffeine. I've never seen that. I was shocking. I was like, oh, I'm

I'm not hungover today, but I just happen to have that. Vitamins B three be five, B six beats. You don't have it because I know there's caffeine. I didn't have time to stop at a coffee shop and literally like was up gas station. I was like,
I'll just get this vitamin water because that's caffeine in it. Oh my god, here or like my other like my other good friend Hannah, anytime we were going through it, like about to start up period. It's a Bay Area basketball league and I feel like, you know, we're just talking earlier how women's sports is really coming up, but even these past few years, I feel like there's been big talk about getting a women's team in Oakland. So we're gonna talk more about
the league. But I'm here with the two behind it Alla team and Shelley Shelly. You're actually part of a brand that was really instrumental in getting gets started. Correct, Yes, Okay, okay, So yeah, we're gonna talk about all about that of a team. I do want to start with you because you're a real hooper. Yeah, basketball has been part your life kind of forever, so kind of tell me your journey first with the basketball for sure. Well before we just started, I want to thank you so
much for having us here today. Is an amazing experience, So thank you. But just to give you a little background into my story, you know, basketball saved my life in so many ways, and you know, just with my upbringing in itself, it was really my outlet to be able to, you know, navigate through that space and just remind myself, like life there's ups and downs, but like regardless of how everything's going, like, there's certain things that I can control, and when I was on the court,
I could control those things. So that was literally like my escape. So you know, growing up in Oakland, I had the opportunity to meet a lot of amazing people that have helped me stay on course, you know, within my journey, and you know, Shelley being one of those people. Did you play in high school? I played in high school, I played in middle school. I ended up going to Juco out here in San Francisco City College of San Francisco and then transferred around a bit, trying to
kind of like figure out my my basketball life. And you know, I think my junior year, I sit down and have a talk Michelle, and I'm trying to figure out what it is I'm trying to do moving forward, you know, because I'm just like basketball, I want to be able to do this, but I also want to figure out what else is my purpose? What else am I looking to do? Because it's kind of like all
you've known forever, that's literally been my identity. Like for so many people that have played basketball throughout their lives, this is literally who they are, right. I played basketball in high school. I was trash. I was like big average, are you digingbo mentality? It's like basketball's life, and
it just it does teach you other things outside the court. You start thinking about those things, you know exactly, so I get a little bit basketball Like, Okay, maybe basketball it's not my life because I was trash, but no, But I mean again, it's taught me so many life you know, skills, and it's helped me to you know, be within this space that I'm at now. So you know, when I started my professional career, Um, I wasn't in the best situation. I literally, you
know, I'd say this a lot. If you can make it in the Bay you can make it anywhere. So I had to I had to bring that mentality with me while I was overseas because I was just like, this is something I really want to do. This is what I want to pursue,
and I want to you know, create longevity within this. So, you know, fast forward six years down the line, I'm looking to create something in the Bay Area here because I'm like, again, basketball has given me so much and we don't really have anything like this out here in the Bay Area or in you know, California for that matter. That's really looking to create opportunities for women to you know, thrive on and off the court.
So we created the Women's Premier of Basketball Association last year. I was playing top league in Mexico during this time, so it was a little bit of a had to juggle a lot of things to be able to still put my all into creating this league. But still, you know, nurture my own individual goal, which is, you know, I'm blessed to play this you know game still so created the Women's Premier Basketball Association. We started with
six teams last year had an amazing outcome because obviously it's new. If something's new, no one's going to really like buy into it unless you know, you really hold some sort of um how can I say this unless people respect you in the community and reputation. Yeah, it's just like it's hard to
build something. But I had a lot of amazing people support me, Shelley don Refology, them supplying us with you during that time and you know, helping us to kind of create this collaborative space between our coaches or players, you know, everybody else that's on our staff. You know, fast forward, we're in our second season. We're literally doing you know, amazing things this year, and we're continuously building on these opportunities to help not only our
players move on to the next level, but we're helping our officials. Like Shelley has done an amazing job, you know, last year, she's been able to help all of those officials that have been within Refology, you know a hand a couple of them have been able to move on to NBA and w NBA and you know, G league opportunities and you know players within our league, they've been able to move on, and you know, some they've started their first year as playing professionals, and then you know, coaches have
been able to move on, and our trainers have been able to move on. One of our trainers is now working with the Seattle Storm just from one year of being From one year of being will slow down just a little bit because I know you're so no, we're gonna get there. We're gonna get there because overseas, was that something that kind of switched with you to start this league? Like what did you learn going over there and then coming back? Like what was that shift for you? Literally, you have to love
it. If you're going overseas, you have to love basketball, because if not, it's going to be a rude reality check, like there's going to be things that aren't going to go your way. So it's just like, Okay, I have to pivot. I'm gonna have to make an adjustment. But at the end of the day, I got to make sure that whatever I'm doing, it's going to benefit me. Because every year you're going out and you're playing overseas, like and a lot of women, it's like that's
kind of the only thing you have to do. I mean, we talk about share a woman as far as the representation and media is bad, and like don't get to start on the pay gap. There's also like let's talk about like just how high it is for women just to go straight pro like what you have to go throughout. It's so hard because it's especially like after
you finish your collegiate careers, the college doesn't owe you anything. They don't need to try and help you get overseas, especially like for players that you know, don't get an opportunity to you know, a WNBA training camp, so they're literally stuck in this place where they're just like I don't know what
to do. They're making poor business decisions. Like for me, I spent like two grand my first summer trying to figure out what it is I was going to do professionally because I'm like going to this camp, I'm going to this clinic, I'm going to this combine, praying that someone picks me up
and sees value within me. But I think the beautiful thing about this league is as opposed to going to these combines and you have to perform at your best in three days and you're competing against eighty other players, Right, you have a ten week season here where you're actually able to see your growth, you're learning, you have other people here that support you during this time, and they're really at the end of the day, they want you to succeed.
So they're going to do everything in your power and their power to pour into you so that you can come out on top. And obviously once that's done, you get to pay it forward and just continue to help the community. That's what were the like conditions, like hooping overseas. Enough, we already talking about the pay gap, but even just before going pro and having to do that legal so I'm not gonna lie like unless you are unless you have w NBA on your resume, Like, it's really hard to find a
program that's going to pay you what you feel like you're worth. Yeah, and then you're competing against other people that have experienced So my first job I was in All Salvador. I was on the worst team. Literally, this was a rebuilding stage for them because they were trying to figure out, you know, what they're going to do keep their team in or are they just going to throw away the hope program. So I go out there and living
in Santiago de Mario. They didn't even have doors on the house that I was living in, and obviously that's not safe, yeah, bringing in imports, you know. So they ended up moving us to the Capitol. And I think again, like I said, you have to love it. I think I only made two hundred and fifty dollars my first year or my first season playing there because the club brand out of money. Wow. But I mean, like there were bugs in the house I was living in. Literally
I didn't have my own room, we didn't have hot water. I mean, luckily I got along with my teammate thought was there because our beds were literally six inches apart. So I saw her every single day and we had to just get through it together. But again, that's why I'm just like, you have to really love it, because if you haven't experienced like that, anybody would have been like, I'm cool. Yeah, that's insane. Like how did people are like forced to have to do that though and go
through it? And like that's why we needed these leagues you guys have created. So tell me how did you link up with Shelley? How did this partnership start? We were just talking about this on our drive up. So again mid my junior year, trying to figure out what I'm doing because like I'm in college, didn't have the best collegiate career. I was averaging like
three points per game. So I mean, if you're looking to play, I don't think anybody's going to really invest in a player that's scoring three points per game. So I'm just like nick upon a local to do that. They don't need a paint or you can do all that stuff. So I was just like, Okay, I went I met up with Shelley. She was holding a like a clinic over at Bishop O'Dowd. That's where she went
um. And you know, she was doing these clinics during the summers to like help other officials, you know, work on the mechanics and just kind of get them set for you know, the upcoming season, whether it's college, high school, or the pros. So I sit there, I watched the entire time. I didn't know what to expect, right, And Shelley
and I have a really good conversation afterwards. She took the time to like speak with me, because like I was just in awe that someone would take the time to just meet with me, not knowing me or anything like that. Afterwards, after everything you just went through your tale, it's like, yeah, I'm just like, so I sit there and talk with her, and you know, she's telling me about like what else she does. She
was like, I'm in real estate. You know, I do officiate, but I think the most valuable thing I hold is that I'm multidimensional and whatever I'm doing, So she's creating other avenues, you know, she's not just relying on one thing. So that was like my biggest takeaway that summer and going to my senior year, I was just like, Okay, like something
else I flipped the switch. Something else turned on, and I was just like, I need to start thinking about this in a different like way because at the end of the day, like I don't have a safety net. I don't have to I don't have college to go back to anymore. The real world legan. So I need to like literally kind of picture all on this. I got to figure out Yeah, yeah, and Chilli, what
was your brand? That just so um about fifteen years ago, I started a company called Raphology, and really I was working college women's basketball Division one for twenty years and you're from here too. From here, Corn and Raisin Alam and I went to high school Saint Jose Hey, so very local and always to help anyone that is looking to pursue something at a higher level,
or even just to get better at the level that they're at. And when Fatima intersected with me, this maybe seven eight nine years ago something like that, she came up. Every summer would run a summer league where we could pass along really good training to referees that couldn't necessarily get out and spend the money to go to all of these camps where they might get seen and picked
up at higher levels. So what I did was I started refology, and I brought the higher level training that I was getting and also participating in and giving in the Division one space, and I brought it down to the locals. So we would bring in folks every week from different areas from Monterey all the way up to Sacramento and beyond. They could bring their crews and we just pass along the great information. So that's what Fatima came up and witnessed.
Of course, my first thing was to try to recruit her as a referee, which she's actually pretty good. Again, she still got that in her back pocket of all of this. And but because you want good people when you're reffing, you really good people around you, because it's it's a trust you work as a team out there. When pandemic hit, I actually
got a phone call. I had been retired, went on. I worked at the w for a few years, but I consult currently through my third side coaching company, my business partner, Don Veden and I we consult NBA teams and players and coaches on all things officiating related. Okay, and so I get this phone call. And I really had still been offering some refology clinics and things, just really for fun and charity. And I get this phone call asking, Hey, there's a women's pro game we need some refs
for. Can you come out and referee? I said, well, I don't even think I have stripes anymore. If they don't mind me in a refology shirt share, i'll show up. So I dug out the old pants and went out, and Fatima was playing, and I saw all the women that I had, many of the women that I had refereed all their college career, um several that were there, and I just thought miss right. So when Fatima was looking to really rebrand and start something fresh that had a
unique approach. I said, absolutely, but we have to rebrand and encouraged her to really step outside of the box and start fresh, get her branding set and launch as a new league with a new mission, and I'm just happy to support her. And part of that then motivated me to start the
nonprofit Blast Equality Collapse that we can help fund. Part you know, our premier partner is the Women's Premier Basketball Association, but I also through the nonprofit, helped train and develop in a have incorporated refology now into the nonprofit all the way down to youth sports as well as some other sports. The tagline for um Blast Equality Collab is leadership Development. So from the bottom of my heart, I believe referees are leading the way in creating fair playing environments or
facilitating the creation of fair playing environments. They have the opportunity on the daily, hundreds of times each game to ensure their embodying equality. So what better way to practice this by partnering with an association that wants to collaborate. All players, coaches, and referees are eligible and participate and have a voice in
all of the training. We do things transparently, so there's no nothing hidden behind creating this opportunity where these women get to play professional basketball at a professional level. And I love so important, yes, and I love that you both of you guys are from here because I mean, you just look at Oakland losing all these professional teams and a five year span. It's so sad,
and it's like, well, who has Oakland's back? You know, because like sports definitely belong in the city, and you know, like I said earlier, like women's sports. I feel like right now, I mean it's a long fight and we're like not even closed still, but I feel like something really is special happening right now. So I love that you guys are from here and like just creating this pathway. How has the league already impacted athletes? I mean, again, just to touch on last year,
we were able to send at least ten of our athletes overseas. For some, you know, this is their first opportunities that like making their dreams a reality. So we were able to do that. Moving into our second season, like, we're working on making sure we increase that number this year, but we've also been able to, you know, help more players get opportunities through you know, whatever it may be. If they're looking to in their
professional careers, looking to move forward. We're trying to create more networking opportunities to ensure that. Shelley's obviously pick some of them up for you know, officiating opportunities as well. But again, I think the women in this league, they're getting an opportunity to be supported by their community. They're feeling empowered, and we're creating a competitive atmosphere for them to just come out here and play and do the things that they love. And how does the league work?
Exactly like getting to play season starting, so we have so before the season starts, we go through a tryout. So you know, this year we had about forty five players come and try out with the league. Starting with six teams last year, we were able to expand to eight this year, so we added on team name teams, so we had about four or
five returners per team with obviously forty five other new players coming in. And then we had some late register late people that registered looking for an opportunity to be in the league, So we did a draft right after the tryout, we selected teams, started out with practices leading up to the actual games which started on June third, So literally whoever was able to make tryouts and you know, they were able to show that they could play at this level because
we have players literally that have graduated from university, players with w NBA EuroLeague euro Cup experience playing in this league. So we want to make sure whoever's here, they're able to compete and they're all still going to have fun at
the same time. Yeah, And alongside all of the tryouts, we also hosted our inaugural Blast Equality Embodied Referee Leadership Summit Leadership at the intersection of basketball plus officiating and alongside the Women's Premier Basketball Association Fatima Cameo Williams from GEMS in
the Gym, James Rockefeller from VJTV. We brought in some amazing guest speakers to kick off the summit series, including none other than Dusty Baker, who was our keynote, as well as NBA Championship coaches w NBA Championship coaches to really present to any of the coaches players that want to participate, but for the group of referees that are becoming part of the Embodied Referee Designation program, that's really going to go across the country. At this point, we're creating
a new space so that we can provide these opportunities. Having this organization here gives the opportunity for currently last year we had twenty five referees on we now have close to thirty five are participating in the Embodied Referee program, coming from as far as Handford to try to work these games. We've got some folks that are out of state part of the program because they want to be part of our training program that are looking at how can they get out here a
couple of times a summer to participate and serve in this capacity. So it's really a high level training program for our officials and it's instrumental in being able to ensure that the women are getting to play at a professional level. And when they come from the backgrounds they come from, they don't necessarily want to just if they want to continue playing their professional career overseas, that's great. But some of the women have professional jobs, but they still want to play
professional basketball here. They don't want to play necessarily in a rec league or a pro am change my whole life. They want to continue to play at the highest level they can possibly play and what's so instrumental in the nonprofit and the messaging that we're teaching and through all of our training and collaboration with Fatima
and the Women's Premier Basketball Association, is that leadership skill. Most women when they end their playing career somewhere and they enter corporate America, there isn't a ton of opportunity for them to continue in the habits that got them hired. They may end up learning golf or something that fits in with the traditional corporate way, but here's an opportunity for corporations to get behind also sponsoring. We
have one premier partner in the nonprofit, Team Schuler Compass real Estate. He's done a He's made an incredible offer. He and Nicole Schuler have made an incredible offer to any of the women that want to get licensed in real estate while they're playing overseas. Once their license till reimburse them those fees and they can start building their clientele while they're overseas or grow their their client their client
base here now. So we're looking for more partnerships in that space that allow the women to continue to develop those strong leadership skills that they get through playing high level sports. Yeah, I think it's the Harvard Business Review years ago. I'd probably have to look on my very first tweet ever. But the studies come out and they say over ninety of women in the C suite positions played sports, and I think my tweet said something like I wonder if they
could say the same for the men but in those same positions. But it's becoming more and more important, and businesses know, and we need those businesses behind growing these organizations because the Women's Premiere Basketball Association is giving that opportunity for these women to keep developing those strong leadership skills that make them so successful and help transform a corporate culture in ways that are very needed right now. No,
that's amazing. It's like changing the way it's all like coming up in basketball and still being able to do what you love, still being able to have a career if you want to. You know, you don't have to go through these give up my whole thing right right now. I love that. I still eat it up a game, But every time I see the cliffs, I'm like, oh my gosh, it's like so lit. Tell me about like that atmosphere and fan base that has grown just in this little
bit of time still, Oh my goodness. Um, I appreciate everyone this season that has come out and has continued to support us. It means a lot because obviously we rely heavily on our community, but you know, this
season, we've had more high school students come out. You know, we have more college and high school interns a part of this because they love being around this atmosphere and just the mentorship component that you know, really comes with it from all the players, you know, interacting with them and just trying to help them be better as well as they're helping us, you know, become better as well. So I just love that sisterhood that we're creating.
But the fans, they've been amazing. I can't thank them enough. But I'm definitely looking to increase our fan base and get more of the cities that you know, are supporting or backing these teams, to have them come out and just see what their teams are doing. You know, yes, yeah, and we have to have you come out because I've even gotten out and shot the ball again. I haven't played in years because I'm rapping one. You probably sash like not too good. We could do a little around the
World or something. I could try that. I actually I'm the in game host for the Santa Cruise Worri is the g League team. The one's done like we do shoot around and I don't make it to like the fifth track. I'm not your announcer for them, but he's actually doing some announcing for us this season. Oh really, Yeah, so we have we have a lot of great people within the community a part of this because they truly believe
in league. Yes, I can definitely have to come out. Oh yeah, no, I definitely know, like asap, I need to come out. Have you as a guest announcer? Yes, I would love that, was off on the mic. Where do you see the league five years from now? That's a great question. Um, I mean I would even say two years from now because I really liked to dream big. I mean,
that's why I'm in this space, you know. I really want to make sure that all of our players are coaches, everyone that's on our staff, they're paid because I want to create jobs within the community and I want people to see value in what we're doing. Because again, like there's no women's sports here, there's no sports teams out here in Oaklands, and I mean, again, this is so important because if I had something like this growing
up, my life probably would have been different. But we're continuously making those positive impacts in the community that we have now, especially with the next generation of athletes, Like I think that's important. So within the next two years, I want to make sure everybody in this league is paid, and I want to be able to expand to different locations so that we can continue spreading this vision throughout the rest of the nation. I'm so excited for you.
I love what you guys are doing. Like I just know I have a good feeling like sports is coming back to Oakland, and just like women's sports, it has to. There's so much space and opportunity right now. So I mean, I really want people to just buy into that dream so we can again make it a reality. Yeah, sell up and let us sell Like where we can follow you, where we can buy tickets. Some funds also help their program, So we're we've got a small purse already set up for the championship weekend August fourth, through six. We've got some matching donors for that, and we're kicking off a campaign with hundred X Causes, which is
another nonprofit that believes in the work that we're doing. Where we're going to we'll have some more information on that here out next week, but we're hoping to tap all of our networks in being able to raise funds for the nonprofit so that we can grow the person the end of the summer for the Championships
weekend. Yeah, now that's super dough and I can't say how much like instrumental the Boys and Girls Club was like to me and like all my friends, like especially the athletes, Like there's a lot of you know, boys and girls I grew up with that you know, on the same block. A lot of them would like get into trouble, but like going to the Boys and Girls Club and like to play basketball after school, like not trying
to be in the streets or I remember one of the guys there. Because the Boys and Girls Club, a lot of them are younger, like so you feel like, you know, those are your friends. It's not like you know, these older people yelling at you that don't understand you where you come from. I remember one of the guys dre end up being a coach for like AU program, and like I remember just everyone coming back like so mad at him because they weren't touching ball until like two weeks. He was
just havn't have like run straight. But it just kept them out of so much trouble. Like you know, they really care about the U. So I love that you guys are like going to the boys and Girls club because I, like I always say when I make it, like those are the first people getting my money if I've ever become rich, Like I have to go, like give them money. Enough fun about it too, if they start. They restarted this program and it was it's the first time they've done
it in a number of years, bringing back in a competitive program. And we watched the players and it was boys and girls playing on teams. Yeah,
we watched them develop in the six weeks incredibly. Just having the opportunity and many of those players don't even play on high school teams, but just to see them because there's only so many spots everywhere or what level you're at, to see them be able to create the competitive environment there and actually have them come out and support a few of them came out to watch FA team
of player. Yes, have some fun, so you know we're impacting young girls lives, but also the young the young boys as well that are really just want to see people competing at high levels. Right. I love what you ladies are doing and I can't wait to see the future of this league. Thank you, Thank you so much for sotophoby and thank you for having us. Thank this was fun.
