What goes up but never comes back down? I don't know. What does come up but never come back down? Your age. Oh, age.
thanks and thanks and all right so this resource of the week do you want to talk about the resource of the week hold on hold on she's only going to tell me through draws ready for an awesome nope What are you going to do? Who's ready for the resource of the week? Who's ready for the resource of the week? And do you want to talk about the resource of the week or do you want me to talk about the resource of the week? You want to do it?
sure okay all right tell everybody about this book so no spoilers so the book is called a dog's way home and it's about a dog a um i'm pretty sure I forget what breed. Well, do you want me to read what it says about it on Amazon? Okay. This remarkable story of one endearing dog's journey home after she is separated from her beloved human is directed by Charles Martin Smith and stars...
they were made into a movie. Yep. Very cool. With a dog's way home is a beautifully told charming tale that explores the unbreakable bond, but. between us and those we love. This is a fantastic and exhilarating journey of the heart that brilliantly speaks to the incredible power of love and resilience of spirit that tie us together, making it a perfect gig.
for anyone and everyone who's ever loved a dog. It's part of a series. Pretty cool, huh? Yep. A dog's purpose series. Oh, that's pretty cool. And so Angela, you read A Dog's Way Home. I don't know what kind of breed it is, but is it the breed that's the picture on the cover? Because the paperback cover and the Kindle cover look different to me. So maybe they just.
have a little different oh this might be a baby yeah that's the yeah oh very cool well awesome so hey if you want to pick up this book and this is a novel right so it is and it's a chapter book right yep Yeah, and it's probably something that older kids can read on their own, but younger kids read with an adult, with their moms, dads, teachers, something like that, right? Yeah.
Thanks, Ange. All right. And if you want to pick up a copy of A Dog's Way Home, just go to 5minuteswithdad.com slash A Dog's Way Home. That's our affiliate link to send you over to Amazon to pick up a copy for yourself. I think what we used to do is this one first. And then end with mind blown. I think it sounds good like this. Yeah, sounds good both ways. All right. So, Angela, you have the second joke of the week. You want to take it away? Yeah. Yeah.
Where would you take a sick boat? Where would you take a sick boat? I don't know. To the dock. To the dock. Ooh, baby Ann's like that joke. What do you think? Thank you for listening. Uh-oh, Ann, she's lost. She can't find the laughter. There we go. To the dock. Get it? Because you park a boat at a dock and dock is like the doctors. What? Whoa. All right. And so.
Let's chat a little bit about the topic of the week. All right. So this topic of the week is how you can make money. Even as a kid right now, Angela is trying to save up for a new phone, right? yep yep because at when she got to middle school she got a phone She got it a little early because she saved up and spent her savings money and spending money on a phone so she could get it a little bit early. And now...
She takes so many pictures and videos with her and her friends that she's run out of space on her phone. So she's looking for an upgrade. Right, Ange? Yeah. Yeah. Okay, so, but the upgrade costs quite a bit of money, doesn't it? Mm-hmm. Yes. So, she's... Looking for all these different ways to make money. And one thing that she's always done and that we've been wanting to get back to is. Oh, yeah.
There we go. It's five minutes with dad. And I am so glad it just feels so good to be back chatting with you. Doesn't it? Yep. Yep. Okay, so another thing that she did, and we'll talk about that as part of this, but she is now looking for ways to save up for her phone because guess how much of the phone upgrade I'm going to pay for? Guess, Ang. What do you think?
Zero. You got it. But I will help get you opportunities and I'll support you in you doing it. So that's what I love to do. I don't love to give you money, but I love to help you. Do what you are doing to earn money, right? So when you do things, I like to say that I like to be the fuel, not the fire. If you have a spark. to do something and you have the drive to do something.
then I like to help you do it. I'll invest in helping you do it. But I'm not going to force you and say, and you got to do this, you got to do this, do this, do this and push you to something. I mean, there are some things like eat your vegetables that are important, right? And what's your favorite vegetable?
Probably broccoli. Probably broccoli. Yeah, you like broccoli. Yep. So anyhow, all that to say, we decided to chat a little bit about that because other kids might want to be saving up for some things too.
Even if you were in second or third grade, I would not have said, yes, you can save up and buy a phone because you don't need a phone then. In middle school, you don't really need a phone, but it's really helpful to have a phone, especially because you've got activities after school you can call and say, pick us up or something like that, right?
Yep. Yeah. Okay. So, Ange, why don't you share a few ways that come to your mind about how kids can make money with or without the help of parents or another adult? Okay. Some ways that come to my mind is you could start a lemonade stand. Yes. So lemonade stand, you're starting your own business, right? But it's not something you do every single day. It's a one-time thing that you could do over and over again, but it's not.
like it's not like a business that you set up you open your doors and you're selling things over and over again you go for an hour or two you sell some lemonade you make some money you pay for all of the equipment that you need to do a lemonade stand what do you think you might need if you want to build a lemonade stand maybe like a stand you need a stand maybe just a table even really right like lemons lemons cups whoop lemons cups yeah
What else? Maybe some ice. Yeah. Some sugar. Some water. Yep. And that's pretty much about it. And I have a. You have what? Something to say about. Go ahead. Like an advice or whatever. Oh, you have advice. Ooh, business advice. Let's go, Ange. What do you got? I would recommend going to some place busy, but not in the middle of it, but to the side, near it. Mm-hmm.
Yeah. Because then there's a lot of people there that might see you like doing it. Yeah. And they might want to stop. Yeah. And if you have a parent come with you or an adult come with you and you can, or maybe sometimes like. The Girl Scouts, when they sell their cookies, they get permission of course from the businesses, but they stand outside of a business and sell their cookies.
So maybe if you did a lemonade stand, or it doesn't have to be lemonade, something that you just set up once. Maybe like a brownie stand. Yeah. Something. And you could. You could sit there and you could sell and you could make some money that way, right? So that's the idea of starting a one-time thing. Now, what's another thing that you think you could do?
Start your own business. Yeah, start a more permanent business even as a kid. So Angela has one that you don't do very often. You did a little bit and you do from time to time. And what's that? Slime. Business. Yeah, you have a slime business. You make your own slime and you sell it. Now, where do you sell it typically? You sell it. Like my friends and family. Yeah, friends and family. And if at some point you wanted to sell it beyond there.
Then you could set it up more formal. But this was just something where friends like slime and you know how to make slime really well, right? Yep. Yeah. And you put really cool things in slime. Where'd you get the ideas? Like tell people about your slime. Like what makes your slime so cool?
It's handmade. Yeah. And like we don't use any machines. Right. To make it. Yeah. And you can make it either fluffy or sticky or whatever. You have all different kinds of slime, right? Yep. And it's not just slime. that is just clear slime or colored slime, you put glitter in it and little toys in it, right? Yep. Where'd you get that idea? Just in your brain?
Yeah. Nice. Awesome. And so you were selling that and you made money a little over and over again. And you'd make big batches of slime, put it in little batches, and then you'd have 10 things of slime you could sell for $5, $10, $15, right? Yep. Yeah. Or you could do the same thing. So if you have a hobby that you like, like let's say...
You like collecting baseball cards or Pokemon cards. You could buy those and sell those and just make money from your hobby. And the key is to get more money in than you spend. So if you buy a pack of cards for $5. and you have 10 cards in there, and one card you sell for $20, that's great. Then you can use that $20 to buy more, all right? And then the third one is you could do what?
Podcast or YouTube channel. A podcast or a YouTube channel. Yes. So everybody, we're going to pause for one second here because Angela needs to. Run downstairs real quick. So we're going to pause real quickly here. Go ahead, Ange. Bye, bye, bye, bye. Bye for one minute. And Ange is going to come right back. And we're back. Right, Ange? Yeah. And we're back. Yeah. You found that one pretty quick. Okay. So Ann just had to run downstairs real quick, but we were just.
chatting about how to make money and podcast or YouTube channel. So there are some people who record podcasts. See, we don't make a ton of money off of our podcast. If people buy the resources of the week, we might get a few pennies here. there or whatever. We get lots of opportunities. I sometimes get ghostwriting opportunities for people who know me through five minutes with dad and hear that I'm a ghostwriter.
And so I build relationships with people that way, but I get referrals. I get, you know, different things that come from it, but some people, they build their podcast. They have advertising on their podcast.
They can sell their own products through their podcast, things like that. And YouTube channel, you can do the same thing. You build an audience if you've got something to share. And if kids do it safely, especially under the guidance of their adults in their house, then that's a way that you could
Express your creativity and do it. Now, the podcast and YouTube channel stuff, that's generally takes a little bit of a long time to build up. If you start your own business selling slime or doing something with a hobby or baking brownies like Ange mentioned or having a lemonade.
aid stand or something like that that stuff you could do pretty quickly um if you have things that you don't use anymore even like you have toys that you don't play with anymore or stuffed animals that you don't snuggle with anymore You could sell those things to you and your, your, you could sell it at a little table, like a garage sale. And those are ways that even kids can make money. Huh, Ange? Yep.
Yep. So, and just saving up. And as you save up, you get paid, you get paid for the podcast, right? And then like we talked about last time, you put some in giving, some in saving, some in spending, and some in investing. So tell me, Ange. What is the, so when you're saving up for your phone, you put some in giving and are you going to use that towards your phone? Nope.
You put some in investing and that's where you put money away for the long term to be able to save up for when you're older. So you can use that for your phone? Nope. and you have a savings, put money into savings for when you want to save up and buy something big like a car or a phone. Can you use that towards your phone? Yep.
Yep. And then spending. And spending is the portion of the money that you make that you can use right away. You use right away to do the things you do from a day-to-day basis. So can you use that towards your phone? Yep. Yep. So, and so you are saving up for your phone and then to the extent that you don't need the money that you put into your spending because you decide you're not going to buy little things like gum or candy or.
whatever else you buy when you're out, like a new shirt or something like that, you can save that towards your phone, right? Yeah. Yeah. And. You know how you can make money. You record podcasts. You're looking at what toys you have to sell that you don't use. Your mom's going to help you with that, right? Yep. Yeah. So, Ange, what advice would you give to kids if they wanted to make some money? What do you think is a way that might be easier for them or fun for them? What do you think?
Maybe do something like with a hobby. Yeah. Something with a hobby like Pavlos likes cards, right? So he's got Jason Tatum cards. He's got other types of basketball cards and Pokemon cards. So he buys packs of cards and he could put them. for sale on eBay, right?
Yeah. And then he'll enjoy. See, what I like about that, about the idea of something with a hobby is you have fun doing it. It's not something you're doing just for money. Chores, you could do chores around the house, extra chores than you normally do because you do some chores around the house just because. You are a human being who lives in this house, right, Ange? Those are your favorite, aren't they? Totally. You sound so convinced.
Yeah. But then there are other things you could do, like you help your mom clean the floor, right? Can she give you a few bucks for that? Yeah. So, all right, Ang, well, I am just so excited and I love watching you get so motivated and. Start doing some really cool stuff and create things when you are saving up for something. So I'm really excited to watch as you get creative about how you can get your phone.
sooner than later. What do you think? You think you're going to do it? Yep. I think so too. All right, Ange, any final words of wisdom to the aspiring entrepreneurs of the world? If you want to start a business, I would start it sooner than... Wait. Yeah. Why is that? So you can. So you can build it up, right? Yeah. Yeah. Because sometimes it takes a little while to like you.
You can't sell slime right away. You got to make it first and you got to let people know, Hey, I'm selling slime. So if you want to do something like that, the sooner you start and you just go slow and steady. The key is to just be consistent and not. have to not rush everything in one day, right? You can just be consistent, you start slow, and then you learn as you go, right?
Yeah. Yeah. All right, Ange. I love it. So that's how some kids can start making some money. I'd love to hear people's ideas. Email me neck at five minutes with dad.com.
