-Starting his coaching career as a student assistant at UW-Parkside -Ran his own AAU program with Next Level AAU -Hours, details and making no money but having a great experience running his own AAU program -Trey McKinney-Jones and Matt Thomas played in his program -Hitting deer with rental car while recruiting -Coach Reigel, Buchanan, Wolfe and Skinkis were all extremely helpful to him at UW Parkside -Coach Grzesk and the program building/defense at St. Norbert along with Woody Wilson -Coach Murray at Cornell (IA) gave him a ton of freedom, big on relationships and always tried to learn and get better -Coach Rusthoven and Coach Fano at St. Mary’s (MN) with program building and running the defense respectively -Film has been biggest change over the last decade within college basketball coaching -Noticed more of a D1 trend with graphics being a big part of the recruitment process -Loves to watch and break down film on Twitter and his website (InTheGaps.com) -“Watch an hour of film a day.” - Tom Crean -Loves watching film on Synergy because there are so many different programs and clips of different offense/defense/situational type breakdowns. -Wants to simplify breaking down clips to his team -“Everything is time and time is money.” -Uses Sportscode as well -Great to give his players comparisons based on the video he has broken down to show them how to do something -Likes to watch Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets, G-League teams and Northern Colorado (now Wyoming-Jeff Linder) -Enjoys looking at quirky things that are unique within film -Process creating his website and his Five Play Friday Newsletter -The power of writing online and learning online from David Perell -Puts out info that he enjoys talking about but also wants to share it -How he changed his Twitter approach -Uses website as a place to gather his thoughts -“Your brains way of synthesizing all information.” -“Twitter is the best clinic in the world.” -Growth of Five Play Friday released each Friday since the month of May -“It’s like that last 15% to 20% of doing something, that keeps you from doing it.” -“Thinking critically and showing the work that he is doing.” -“What can I find that is a little different, what can I find that’s a little outside the box.” -Tiago Forte “Building a Second Brain” -James Clear “Atomic Habits” -Growth mindset over fixed mindset -Gary Vaynerchuk and his similarities to recruiting -Football coaches are unbelievably organized -Some coaches limit themselves with only studying their sports -“Everything is going to improve.” -“You learn and grow and adapt and you go!” -NBA bubble and pandemic thoughts
