Then everybody, and welcome to fire up. My name is Scott Morgan Roth the Motor City Manmouth. Please to be joined by my regulars, Jeremy Ball right, what's up smoking? Right to talk some more sports here, hopefully Morgan was basketball and George corn I love the tire that these guys are wearing. They speak to company brand. George, welcome back to the fire it up. Let's fire it up, hey, Scott, Hey, Jeremy, that's what we're gonna do. All right. Look at this Wayne Shirk.
Guy, Wayne Shirk, make sure if you like what you see here when we're talking to these sports shows, go over to the South Florida Tribune and subscribe. Mark, Mark Malloch, Look at these guys. These guys are the best. Bryan three Cushion. Hey, all, my guys are popping in real quick. Oh, I'm glad you can join. Enjoy your Thursday night. Well, we got a few topics we're going to talk about tonight as we go into the sports weekend, and the first one is one.
I hate to say it, but the only word I can describe for this is laughable. And when I'm laughable, no, it's not laughable enough. Where I'm losing my head my hat over at this, Jeremy. I won't go that far to you. Let you get the gratification thing. It's that but all kidding aside. The NBA's new in season tournament to reported league debut in December. The final four will take place from December seventh or the ninth
in Las Vegas. The players for the tournament champion will earn each received five hundred grand First of all, Jeremy, what do you think of this new in season tournament? Is this what's forcing the All Star Game? Oh? Actually, it isn't. It isn't replacing it. No, oh god. So we're gonna have a mid season champion and then they automatically get like a one or two seed then in the playoffs at the end of the season. Is that what this is all about? I have no idea what it's all
about. Really, If that's what it is. If you're gonna have a mid season champion and they're automatically in and takes away one of those bottom feeder seeds, isn't that good for the sport? Is Let's say they win that tournament for their division, their conference, and the other one wins it for their conference. They should be the number one seed for the first half, which you will eliminate that bottom feeder, the play one of the players.
It'll increase the level of competition at the end of the season. All I can say is this reminds me of Bowl Games, which is a participation event. Really, this is so laughable if I had to go Bowl games when it comes to describing the NBA play in tournament. Give me a break, all right, George, do you have any more intellectual insights over this? Yeah, I'm like, I'm still, yeah, trying to sort through my mind to details. Like Jeremy said, I don't think they're gonna do that,
Jeremy. I'm not quite sure though, if they're gonna see people after the season ends. But it begs the bigger question and than what the heck are you doing. You're doing it for ratings, you're doing it for money, You're doing it to line the coffers of guys that are rich already, these players and these owners. It seems to me like it's a bit of a stretch and you're trying to horn in, hold in whatever on the marketing
dollars. Obviously, in the month of December, which as we know, is a lot of family, a lot of Christmas shopping, a lot of this and that, a lot of football. And here you go, mister NBA, mister Silver, trying to put your mark on on what typically we expect sports fans in December. Like you said, Scott, I mean, college bowl games are our special They're privileged games, especially the ones obviously in
the National Championship Series. But this I'm having trouble understanding. I know he wants to do it for money, and I know he wants to ratings grab, but this is just going to extend the season. Guys, we know it as because like you said, they're not they're not replacing the All Star Game, so they're still going to give you an all Star break to all the teams. I don't I don't like it, all right, Jamie, go ahead, read the chat room and out all right. First love,
Patty Grinds, I completely agree this is dumb. They need the bottom four teams to play for the number one pick instead of the lottery. Absolutely, And I say in football, if you have two teams tied, instead of flipping a coin, you could call it the toilet Bowl and have them two teams play in the NFL for it. All right, Well you get Candy Evelyn, she's our crack researcher from the Maybe this will I'll put a little bit added that for the title game will count toward the NBA's regular season the
end. The league announced the full details of the event will be revealed Saturday at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas during the fan event NBA Con and will be broadcast live on ESPN's NBA Today. Okay, of course, all right, whatever, thank you Candy for the information. At you, Candy. I'm still I think I must be suffering a dumb pill because none of the I stand a better chance of taking a foreign language at the age of sixty,
even though I struggled when I was seventeen in high school doing that. So this is all I'll say is the NBA Playing Tournament is a foreign language to me, That's all I NBA Playing Tournament isn't. The n season Tournament is to me considered affable and a desperate money grab. And let's see, I want to say, see who said the different money grab? My bat must smoking dad? Yeah, your dad, Your dad nailed it, all right? Where Yeah, all right, we gotta definitely a money grab. Where
are we at? All right? A very bottom comment. There you go, Ken, your comment so good now everybody can see it. Thank you, Dad, and agrees with Patty G. There you go, all right, money grab? Well, nevertheless, this is what we have an in season tournament. You know. The best way to combat the thing is just play eighties and nineties basketball when it really matter instead of a jump shooting league. That's what I would do all these gimmicks. I didn't have a problem
with the playing tournament. I think that was pretty intriguing, one of Silver's better ideas, but he hadn't had many other ones than that. I want, I don't have a problem with. I can live with that, But this other stuff is what it is, so all right, all of them. But that's I hate to play in tournament because that puts it at basically half the field gets into the playoffs anymore. Might as well throw out more participation awards. Oh yeah, no, I'm with you all the way.
I mean, I agree, I don't like to play in tournament either, you know, But again, the NBA is in such dire straights to find any way it possibly can so that they can keep it interesting. But why don't you go back to what made it all great, playing defense and playing basketball the hard way. Nobody had super teams unless you traded for them. Okay, traded players agree these each other's buddies. Yea, for the love of God, bring back the hand check. Yeah right, I'll like DC.
I this one's got to go up because he's falling into my territory. Because I wouldn't say I surrender. I say DC, You're the best, my friend. And that's why that comment got out there. Although I struggle with Spanish and probably regretting it in the Miami market that I should have learned it, because I can tell you how many zoom calls I struggled with because I didn't know Spanish. And when you're in Miami, cover of the Marlins,
you have to have a lot of the bilingual people. We never got a chance to go ahead and hear what the people in Spanish I had to say. Before I go any further, I want to just let everybody know The Fire Up is in broadcast around the world. If you want to advertise cost efficiently, call me nine ft four three or four or four nine for one. We broadcast live on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube, website, www dot selfwordas tribune dot com, Twitter, attribute and South Knabling is behind the scenes and in the chat room and doing a darned good job of
it. Coming later, the summer of the Motor City Man Mole Show debuted and the Aglo Corp Mabia Studios and bok Ratan, Florida, owned by doctor Edwin Hernandez. I'll keep your posted. Aglo Corp is a technology based company and I have been named the president of broadcasting for it, so I'm looking forward to building that as another extension of what we're doing here. Any final thoughts about the new end season tournament? Have we done everything in our power
to chastise the idea? Not that anybody's gonna listen to us anyway. Well, I'll weigh in. I do like to play in and I'll tell you why at the end of the season. Is because it gives cities and teams that are very close the chance the opportunity. It's kind of like a wild card round. So I don't mind that at all. At the end of the season. I think Silver did a nice job with that tournament. He
keeps it very brief, he keeps it to one two. I think maybe possibly have to pay it is it just two or three games you play. And I do like that format because, like I said, it brings those cities, those franchises that are just trying to eke into the playoff. It's a chance to play against competition that is about the same as them. In other words, you know, a seventh seed against the eight seed or eight
versus nine, whatever the heck he uses that formula. But no, I am against Like you said, guy said, I don't like this other tournament early in the season at all. In season turning and brings up another one, another one NBA Governor's voting on July eleventh, regarding flopping get rid of it. Yeah, I think they're going to do some things in the summer league to try and unforce. Yes, I saw that, and my dad says, there's a new French perfume. As though it's called sweet surrender.
It comes in a black bottle of the yellow stripe down its back. Dad's got a great sense of humor. One of these days we're going to get him on here. We will by hook or by crook. See this guy in first. All right, let's want a baseball like trout is surgery of broken risk. He's out forty eight weeks, tough, look angels or forty five and forty four going into it. I don't know, Jeremy, some thoughts about Mike trout Man. Such an amazing talent, but like the last
three years, has struggled to stay on the field. Availability is the best ability. And I knew when they did that big contract for such a long period of dime it may bite them in the butt. Yeah, okay, George, Mike is a great ball player. You know, everybody kind of annointed him as the second Coming when he when he first broke into the league. And I know he's you know, they they've they've tried hard. Baseball has to make him more outgoing and more fan friendly, whatever you want to
call it. But boy, oh boy, this is a real blow to the Angels. That franchise has been lollygagging for how many years now? And Otani is there, but I'm telling you, you know they need Mike Trout's bat for sure. This is really really going to harm their chances to make the postseason. It's unfortunate. We've had it though other teams have had it
and been able to somehow bear through it, but not. I don't think the Angels can, although you know, it's a long season and we'll see, but it is definitely a heartbreaker for the Angels, franchising, their fans. Yeah, if indeed this is Otani's last year, one would have thought they would have had one hundred and sixty two games or one hundred and fifty with Otani and Trout. But it's not going to happen, unfortunately. And
I've worked with the Angels in the past. Tim Mead used to be in charge of their media, and Tim and I are really good friends, and the Angels, to me, they have a world title under Mike Socio whatever really been relevant in the postseason. I just feel bad for the organization and knowing that Otani could probably pick his price when it's also done all right, final topic of the night, San Diego State will be staying in the Mountain
West for now. This is a blow to the PAC twelve, sighting uncertainty that no deal is expected to be announced imminently. San Diego State University will be in the Mountain West. As I mentioned, no team in southern cal So, when you talk about the position that PAC twelve commissioners in George Cliford call, you talk about a commissioner that's in a vine, you'll lose UCLA and you use USC and then you can't even get San Diego State even be
in southern CAW. How relevant is the PAC twelve And do you think that San Diego State made the right move? And I think they're committed there for at least two more years, Jeremy, I think San Diego State did the perfect move. I think the PAC twelve is slowly becoming the Pact nine. I think Oregon is the next team to leave, right because I don't see them staying if the level of competition doesn't remain at a high level and without
USC and UCLA, I don't see a high level staying there. What's their biggest competition now, Stanford, right, George, Yeah. I remember when I went to a journalism conference many many years ago, I met a young guy that was a student at San Diego State University, and he was so excited about that school, and he was really pushing the especially the basketball, but the football too, And I'll never forget that kind of stuck in my head. So I've always had a kind of a soft spot for San Diego
State when it comes to athletics. Just so you know, it's a wonderful area as we know, it's a it's a beautiful part of California. It's and it's a very good university. And I agree with Jeremy. I think they were smart and not jumping because obviously the Pac ten is looking for help right now, guys. I mean they're having all kinds of problem hemorrhaging if you will, and and and getting getting getting teams to stay or even enticing
new ones to come on board, like San Diego State. All that being said, um no, I think San Diego State did the best thing also to just to stay put for now. And and it's and it's a shame because that Pac ten Big Ten rivalry was so great at the time, we guys, us guys know what the Rose Bowl being the crowning triumph, you know, of the two conferences on NBC on New Year's Day. I mean, oh my god, as kids growing up, we look so forward to
that and seeing that Rose Bowl game. And now it's kind of like college sports is so football, so darn convoluted now and so money grabbing hungry. I don't like it. Well, two prominent names that a lot of us are probably all too familiar with anyways of Brady Hoak, who's their football coach, and Steve Fisher. We all know what a wonderful job he did at San Diego State. And I'll make it a clear majority that San Diego State made a good move holding off the Pac twelves in trouble and they got to
fight a way to avoid avoid any hemorrhaging. I don't think the Big Ten is done from expanding. To me, I have a feeling I do believe in my mind always felt this way that Washington and Oregon will be the next two to go. If they don't get Washington and Oregon, I could see Stanford and California going, but I would say Washington and Oregon would be the most likely ones because they want that Nike money is what they want, and
that's big city in Seattle. Time will tell all this plays out. Everybody got their thoughts in on this one, because we're going to parting shots afterwards. Jeremy, any closing thoughts on this topic. Good job, Ego State, all right, we'll about you. George, Yeah, good job, and I'm looking forward to seeing how that big ten plays out with the adding UCLA and something care all I know and San Diego State, good job and
just resisting it right now for going to the pack. Okay, well, we are going to go to our party shots here on this Thursday night. I just want to point out one more time, with a few more minutes left in the broadcast, I'll get to that. Note that the show is that Fire Up is being broadcast around the world. The audio version of fire Up can be heard on iHeartRadio, Apple, Spotify, Google, or wherever you get your podcasts. Please hit the red subscribe button on YouTube selfworder tribute.

call me a nine five four three or four four nine for one. We broadcast live on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube, our website www dot Selfworder Tribune dot com, Twitter at Tribune South to Canadian will against behind the scenes, and as I mentioned earlier, the Motor City Madmouth Show will be appearing later on the summer. We're infro to be discussed at a later time. So all right, Jeremy, we'll lead off with party shots. Go ahead, Okay, I want you guys to weigh in on this question that
I have for you. Is the future of the franchise QB in jeopardy with the rising salaries in the NFL. What do you think, George? Yeah, I thought about it a little bit, not too much, not too deeply, but I think that, Yeah, the salaries are just getting way out of hand. I mean, they're obviously escalating, and it's it's it is a good good thing to think about it. I'm not sure if there's one solid answer I could give you, but I think teams will still pressure
will be under pressure. I mean to covet that position, and obviously than more positions on a team. I'm not trying to walk, but I think I think that the quarterback, franchise quarterback will still have a place. And but don't get me wrong, there will be a lot that will move around. There will be a lot. And uh, I think of the situation
here in Detroit, and you know Jared Goff and all these naysayers. You know, the guy's not going to make it, and and look at the splendid job he did last year, and you know it, and it comes to a point, well, yeah, but been in another other one or two years whatever. They have to give him big, big money. So I understand all of that is going on in the background, but I have to say, I still think there is a place for franchise quarterbacks for at
least for now. Scott, what do you think? Yeah, I think I agree with George one hundred percent for now. But I think the salaries are out of control. As Patty grimes to say, yes, eventually the balls the bubbles will burst for the QB salaries. It's inevitable. I mean, how much can you pay the quarterback? Anyways, there has to be a limit in terms of Remember, you do have a salary. Happened this sport and we got to pay most of your cap to one player and then
you can't fill out a roster. So yeah, I think that's inevitable that the bubbles will burst, But I'd say the next couple of years and then you have to really look at it again. I really do. There's only so much you could pay one player. I say one thing before I add to it. Though, as we all see that the running back position has been devalued, and once upon a time that they were one of the highest
paying positions out there. Go ahead, Okay, I want to give my take on it now, and now I'll give you why I bring this up. Number one, there has only been three quarterbacks that are not on a rookie contract that's won the Super Bowl since the year two thousand. That would be Tom Brady on the least the market value, Peyton Manning, and Matthew Stafford. That's it. All. The rest of the qbs that have won
a Super Bowl have been on a rookie contract. Wow. So with that being said, I think that unless they are getting to that level of talent, there will be no such thing as a franchise QB. Going forward, they're gonna it'll always be regurgitate and recycled through the draft, because the talent coming out of the draft is way better than what we used to see coming out of the draft. You usually used to see maybe what one or two
quarterbacks be good out of a draft class. And lately we've seen three or four out of the draft class, and not all of them were first rounders. Yeah, but I'll tell you to bring all their fourth rounders. Look at all the other players that have been drafted later in the drafted. Joe Montana stands out to me. I don't care about Tom Brady. You were lucky. They were lucky that a guy like him fell at Joe Montana in the third round too. Yeah, and I'm rasing the second round. There
you go. Yah, it's very interesting. Yeah, Like I like your parting shot. That was a really good one. That's thinking man's parting shot there, all right, George, Well, my parting shot is going to be something that my colleague Joe the Point of the Metro Times, formerly of the Free Press, formerly of the New York Times route and he's very, very thoughtful in his writing and I have to share it with you, guys. What's the future of Comerica Park. This ballpark was built in two thousand.
This ballpark is now twenty three years old, and it is showing its age. Can you believe the ferris wheel is shut down? The carouselt They spend all this money on these two beautiful rides for the children, and they're both shut down. There's a water stations and hydration stadiums where you could fill up a bottle for water if you cannot afford the high prices of bottled water
and pop and beer. They're not working, Joe said in his article Chris Ellich, if this isn't an eye opener, and Scott Harris should be for you guys, you have to do something to maintain this stadium properly, to enhance it, to bring more fans down there. I know you can't do nothing about everybody getting drenched with rain or drenched with heat and sunshine. There's no overhangs, as we know at Comerica Park like we had at Tiger Stadium.
But I'm telling you LaPoint had a good column and it's making a lot of noise from the readers that have seen it. And posted it on Facebook. So all I'm doing is kind of chiming in, But I'm saying the same thing Chris Ellich and your mother and who's ever else involved in this franchise.
You guys better get some forward thinking right now, because you can't leave this ballpark just you know, I don't want to say ruined, but just be laxadaisical and keeping a high standard that is required for a Major League baseball stadium. I doubt if they'll be able to afford to build a new one, at least not as owners. I doubt if they'll do that, even though the point suggested that this column that would have to come. I believe
with a new ownership. Now, I was always thought that these ballparks are bill now are mental last fifteen one hundred years. Milwaukee's having the same problem with Miller Park. I mean, think about it. Now, they have four hundred some million dollars of maintenance. What are you're gonna do? They're all built to last, So good luck, you know, and then look at what happened. Texas goes and build a new one right away, you know, so you got something. Well, Well, Atlanta did a good
thing by going suburbs. But they felt like that's where they're fan base, so I have no and plus are you using their other one for Georgia State football, So it's not that's not a total. My parting shot is actually in the Detroit area. Phillip's Philip about Philip Zadina. Oh, I'm going to fill the net with pucks, you know. Okay, Well, when you want to talk about hitting rock bottom, nobody claims you in the waiver market really, so, in my opinion, let's talk about the modern day
bust. He didn't want to stay with the Red Wings because number one, he didn't have any chance to go out there and make it in a system which obviously their system is starting to become a lot steeper in prospects. But Philip Zadina, I'm glad that you didn't want to play with the Red Wings because now it seems like nobody wants to take you on with that salary. My best thing for you to go, Phillips zena go back to Europe. You're no good in the National Hockey League. You are a bust. Bust.
If you want to go out there and fill the nets up with buck do it. The European way, because you're not cut out for the National Hockey League and big league hockey. The Red Wings could have kept him around and the minor leagues, what Grand Rapids, but he wanted to league. Well you know what, good luck? Okay. I remember we talked about Johnny Manziel not living up to the hype. Well, you know what, Phillips ZDNA didn't either. And as far as I'm concerned, you know,
I'll be as biases. I want them about the Wings. They've always been, They've always owned a special place in my heart. I get that. But there's still an original original sixteen with eleven Stanley cups, and people want to play for the Red Wings. They really want to play for the Red Wings. Maybe the Arizona Coyotes weren't that stupid, after all, they could have had him, but they didn't want him, and he's slid to Detroit.
I don't know what the Cardinal Coyotes ended up getting. Not the point good riddence fell up, Zadina. Maybe you need to go back across a big pond and disappear once overall nobody cares about you. Anyways, Go ahead, Jeremy. One more thing. I mentioned it on my show last week. I didn't really get a chance to mention it here. Former Michigan quarterback
graduated from the University of Arkansas, drafted by the Patriots. Play was a journeyman around the league a few years had his first year as a high school coach. Ryan Mallett passed away last Wednesday in a drowning accident. In my heart and deepest condolences go out to his family. Okay, and Jeremy, well said, and his beautiful fiance too. They were going to get married and she was also I understand, you know, swimming at the time and
just so heartwrenching and so heartbreaking and thank you're five years old. Yeah, well, conway too soon, all right, as we wrap up, fire up, We're gonna let Jeremy let everybody know how they get ahold of Jeremy. And also before you do, we have another episode coming out this Sunday called The Professor and the Pupil. Hope you can join us, and they have on Jacob Christner to join us.
