Financial Autonomy

Guidance Financial Servicesfinancialautonomy.com.au
Plenty of books, podcasts and blogs focus on building wealth – and that’s great, as far as it goes. But focusing just on wealth misses the point. I believe what most of us actually want is to have choice. Choice in how much time we give to income-producing activities. Choice about what those income-producing activities are. Choice about where we live. Choice about when we retire. Choice about the ways we use our money to produce happiness. In the Financial Autonomy podcast, I explore the different ways you can gain choice - from investing in stocks to becoming self-employed, starting a side hustle, or buying an investment property. I share learnings I've gained working with clients for over 20 years as a Certified Financial Planner, and interview others with interesting insights or experiences in gaining choice in life.

Why Do Bond Markets Matter to the Stock Market?

After 10 consecutive months of gains, the Australian share market declined in September, heralding a period of volatility that continues today. There is never a single catalyst driving markets, instead, there's a confluence of views that tend to drive either positive or negative momentum. But in this most recent period of volatility, there has been one factor receiving the bulk of the finger-pointing, and that is the bond market. To be specific, it is rising yields and falling bond prices. So th...

When to use Gearing in your investment strategy

Gearing is a way to increase your risk, and we know that risk and reward are inextricably linked. We also know that there's no such thing as a free lunch, and higher risk, whilst helpful in providing the potential for higher returns, also comes with the potential for greater loss. What's a Moat, and why do they matter when investing? - Episode 205

This week we're going to explore the topic of moats. No this is not yet another weird acronym, though you do sometimes see it written all in upper case so if you’ve been confused by this you’re completely forgiven. It's not hard to see how these characteristics might be attractive in an investment. So in this week's episode we'll explore where this moat concept came ...
