The Cambridge Dictionary describes a useful idiot as a person who is easy to persuade to do, say, or believe things that help a particular group or another person politically. It typically refers to individuals who are perceived as unwittingly supporting or promoting a cause or ideology that may be against their own best interests. It suggests too that they are being manipulated or used by others for their own agenda.
