Episode description

Welcome to our feel of the week: Criticism. We all have an inner critic. But for some of us, the critic becomes so loud that we mistake it as the voice of truth, or even intuition. Often, that voice comes from a fear of intimacy and a feeling of inadequacy that was taught to us by our caregivers, peers, and culture.

We might criticize the ones we love too, because criticism acts as a separating force — a way to keep them at arm’s length so it’s less painful if we lose them. Of course, it can be a form of control and abuse too. But for many of us, it’s a self-protective behavior meant to shield us from vulnerability. By reaching toward perfection in ourselves and others, we shut ourselves off to love and intimacy.

Criticism is complemented by the 10 of Cups, a Mars in Pisces card, reminding me of how criticism can fracture community, leaving us lonely and isolated from the ones we need most. It also brings me into the Pisces-Virgo axis — one that has a lot to teach us about self-sacrifice, acceptance, compassion, and reciprocity.
