selfcare on mental health
It's a Tuesday morning. Your alarm clock shrills at 6 AM. Your body aches from the mere four hours of sleep you managed to get. You roll out of bed, your mind already racing with tasks, meetings, emails, and the perennial, ever-growing to-do list that seems to extend infinitely before you. You skip breakfast, drown a quick cup of coffee, and jump straight into the melee of your demanding day.
As the hours fly by, you're running on fumes, a cocktail of stress hormones and caffeine propelling you through the day. When evening finally arrives, you return home, exhausted and drained, but there's no respite. The demands of domestic life beckon, be it children, household chores, or personal obligations. The cycle continues, days turn into weeks, weeks into months, and slowly, this becomes your normal, your routine.
Sound familiar? You're not alone.
Today, my friends, we're addressing a subject that has truly immense implications for our lives, yet is often swept under the proverbial rug, neglected in our fast-paced, ever-demanding, modern world. This is a topic that concerns your well-being, my well-being, and the collective well-being of society at large. It's the concept, the practice, and the art of self-care and its significant impact on our mental health.
As we navigate the ebbs and flows of our lives, we tend to forget to pause, breathe, to take care of ourselves. Sometimes, we may even question, "Why is self-care so crucial?" Well, my friends, that's exactly what we're going to dive into today.
So, grab a cup of your favourite warm brew, find a comfortable spot, and let's navigate this journey together.
According to a study conducted by the American Psychological Association in 2020, nearly two-thirds of U.S adults (64%) said that their stress levels significantly impacted their mental and physical health¹. So, if you've ever felt as though you're living on autopilot, racing through your days without ever really living them, this episode is for you.
Self-care, in its true essence, is the deliberate action of caring for our mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. It's the oxygen mask you need to put on first before helping others. It's not selfish; it's necessary. Because when we fail to prioritize self-care, the repercussions on our mental health can be significant.
So, let's first understand the problems associated with not taking care of ourselves.
[Soft pause]
So, my friends, these aren't just abstract concepts or overblown warnings. These are genuine, researched, and documented consequences of neglecting self-care. And these are just the tip of the iceberg.
Now, we've talked about the problems. But this episode isn't about dwelling on the negatives; it's about empowering you with knowledge and practical strategies to reclaim your mental health through self-care.
So, what does self-care look like in practice? Well, the beauty of self-care is that it's not a one-size-fits-all approach. What works for me might not work for you. But the fundamental principle remains the same: prioritize your well-being intentionally and regularly. This can take many forms, such as:
So, how does incorporating these self-care practices affect our mental health? Let's dive into that:
[Soft pause]
However, remember that the key to self-care is regularity. It's not a one-time fix but a lifestyle change. It’s like watering a plant; one good soak won’t keep it alive forever, it needs consistent care. In the same way, for self-care to have a lasting impact on our mental health, it needs to be practiced consistently.
As psychologist and author Guy Winch aptly said, We go for regular check-ups for our bodies...but we're not doing regular check-ups for our minds.⁷ Self-care is like that regular check-up for your mind. It's a preventive measure, helping maintain mental wellness and stave off potential issues before they become serious problems.
[Soft pause]
And so, my friends, as we wrap up today’s enlightening conversation, I urge you to reflect, to recognize where you may be neglecting self-care in your life. Remember, there’s no guilt or shame in realizing that you’ve been putting yourself last, only an opportunity to change, to grow, and to start nurturing your mind, body, and spirit with the care they deserve.
Because at the end of the day, mental health isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. And self-care is the compass that helps us navigate that journey, guiding us towards a place of greater resilience, balance, and peace.
