But you will learn more each and every time. Plus there are things like what I do, which is the Bible recap, which does lay it out chronologically. So the old Testament ends with a cliffhanger anticipating the arrival of the Messiah. So between the old and new Testament, there's a year gap. So that would be like between now and That feels like a long time, right? So after years, a man arrived in Galilee claiming to be the Messiah. His name was Jesus. Hello, friends.

Let's get fed. Hello friends, happy Monday. Welcome to Fed by the Fruit. How are we?
I hope that you're doing great. We are in already week three of September. And so that means our episode is how to apply biblical principles to our everyday lives. And what I thought we could talk about today is what even is the Bible and how do we go about reading it? I think that was one of the questions I had, like I didn't know much about the Bible and I certainly didn't know how to read it and actually feel like I was gaining understanding. So I want to share some things with you today.
So let's just dive right in The Bible is a collection of books that explores the relationship between God and humanity. It literally tells us why we exist and what we are called to be. Before the invention of the printing press, the books of the Bible were written on scrolls. Some books like Samuel and Kings are to this day split into two parts because they were too long to fit on one scroll. That's why we have First and Second Samuel, First and Second Kings.
It's because those books were too long to fit on a single scroll. There are two major sections of the Bible, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the story of God building a nation of people called Israel. The New Testament is the story of God sending his son as the savior of the world. It's my story and your story. This is our genealogy, our history, the story of where you and I come from. Did you know that Jesus was a Jew?
Christians and Jewish people share a common history. Christianity is the simple fact that we believe Jesus is the Messiah of the Jewish faith and the Jews do not believe that he is the son of God, the Messiah. The Old Testament is books written in Hebrew and Aramaic. These books can be divided into five major sections. So it begins with the Torah or the law. Those books include Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. That's the Torah. Second, we have history.
That includes Joshua, Judges, Ruth, First and Second Samuel, First and Second Kings, First and Second Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther. Third, we have poetry. Poetry includes Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. Fourth, we have the major prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel. And finally, fifth, we have the minor prophets, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.
Now, the major prophets aren't more important than the minor prophets. It's just that the major prophets, the books, are longer. So the books of the Bible are not in chronological order. Talk about confusing, right? That's why context is so important. You cannot just read the Bible one time in your life, no matter how many times you read it, you'll never understand it all. But you will learn more each and every time.
Plus there are things like what I do, which is the Bible recap, which does lay it out chronologically. So the Old Testament ends with a cliffhanger anticipating the arrival of the Messiah. So between the Old and New Testament, there is a year gap. So that would be like between now and That feels like a long time, right? So after years, a man arrived in Galilee claiming to be the Messiah. His name was Jesus. And we as Christians, again, we believe he was God in human form.
coming to restore the world to God's original plan like it was before the fall, right? We talked about the way God planned for the world to be. ah So now we have the New Testament, which is books, and they were written in Greek, sharing the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. It also explores the spread of Christianity in a collection of letters written to different people about how to live as followers of Jesus.
I have recently just like finally just identified what it is that I'm trying to do here. And my mission is to turn believers into followers. I believe i believe most of the people who tune in and listen to me are believers. They have a level of belief, but they're not living their lives as followers. And that's what I want for you. ah The New Testament can be divided into four major sections. So starting with history, and that includes Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Acts.
Then secondly, we have the Pauline epistles. That includes Romans, First and Second Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, First and Second Thessalonians, First and Second Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. Then we have the general epistles, Hebrews, James, First and Second Peter, First, Second, and Third John, and Jude. And finally, we have prophecy, which is say it with me, revelations. So written within each of these four major sections now, you'll find three main styles.
And I thought this was really interesting to be broken down this way. So we have story, right? So almost half of the Bible is a narrative because who doesn't love a good story? The Bible is a story. In fact, I'm reading something right now. It's actually called the story. And it is the Bible written in one continuous story. And I love it so much. ah Two, we have poetry. So about a third of the Bible is poetry. An example is Psalms, and they're meant to be sung, prayed, or said aloud.
Thirdly, we have discourse, and it's meant to persuade the reader to change their way of thinking. They are conversational and they present an idea. And an example would be Jesus' sermons and then many of the letters that we find in the New Testament. So who actually wrote the Bible? Like who's the author, right? So it was written by different authors. over a span of years from three different continents and three different languages. And it was all inspired by God.
It's a very diverse collection of people, including Kings and farmers and fishermen and priests and shepherds, even a tax collector and a doctor. And even then, when all books are put together, they are perfectly arranged. Can you imagine that? They maintain a consistent storyline without ever knowing their book would one be one day be compiled. Only God, only God can do that. So how to read the Bible.
So in AD with the printing of the Geneva Bible, we saw the inclusion of both chapter and verse divisions throughout the entirety of scripture. So when you flip in your Bible, for example, to John John is the title of the book, right? John is the title of the book. Three is the chapter and is the verse. So to read and study the Bible, my best advice to you is to pray before you ever even open it and then read it in context. The Bible is one of the most complex books in the world.
And again, you will never understand everything about it, but we should develop a passion for studying scripture. We should read it, think about it, and talk about it as much as we can. Studying scripture should become a daily, lifelong endeavor. There is no better way to start your day than with the word of God. And also, once you become a Christian, you have the Holy Spirit within you to give you wisdom and discernment as you read. God wants you to understand.
He wants you to know what he meant. It's not meant to be confusing and difficult. He gives us the Holy Spirit. And all we have to do is is pray and ask for that wisdom and discernment and he will give it to us. And he wants you in it, studying it. Like I said, you can't you can't expect to read it one time and feel like you have a grasp on it or that you understand it, but you also can't then put it down and say, well, I tried, right? I'm on my third, and no umm I'm sorry.
I'm on my fourth full trip through the Bible. The first one I did on my own, it took me almost two years. And I was so confused. The second, third, and fourth times have been using the Bible recap. And again, I want to invite you, October st, we begin the New Testament. So the the story of Jesus and his life and how God sent him to earth to save us from our sins. I would love for you to do that with me. It's just a small amount of scripture to read each day.
And then you listen to the Bible recap podcast. It's usually between six and minutes. And you just do that. And that can be the perfect, like dip your toe into starting your day in the word of God. I would love for you to join me in that.
ah So our September memory verse, we have James -So the book is James, the chapter is and the verses are and Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. So that's all I have for you today. i hope that was interesting. This was a quick minute episode. So listen to it more than one time.
