You found Fantasy Football Weekly Micro, a deep dive on one player in just five to ten minutes. Now here's your host, Paul. It's Fantasy Football Weekly Micro. Addition, it is an experiment with me and geteen leagues Dot Com writer Tyler Kenney Billy. It's a deep dive on one player five to ten minutes. Who do you want to talk about today, Tyler? Entire little Mike Evans, polarizing player. Oh, I like it, and I've got very strong feelings on this and we'll see if they match up with with
your observations. So, um, let's start here. Let's do a let's do a deeper dive on his season last year and what will have been his last season with Tom Brady. Yeah, so he finishes with the wide receiver seventeen last season, wideceiver fourteen and average points per game. But he would he didn't like he did, but he did not because if you remember Week seventeen, ten catch two seven yards, three touchdown, nuclear explosion, right, the Fantasy League winner that game,
consolation championship. Yeah, well, it depends, you know, it depends on if you're playing, You're you're hopefully you're not playing your Week eighteen you're not playing your championship in week eighteen, we hope not anyway. Ten catches, two hundred and sevent yards and three touchdowns. That's certainly. That certainly skews it. How about before that though, So before that game, he was the wide receiver thirty six thirty six and average
points per game and he finishes the dciver fourteen. That's eighteen yeah, one in geez in one game. That is crazy. That is crazy, And it tells you a little bit about why you have to be wary of the points, the average, the average Fantasy production per game when you trended across the whole season. I think, for me, and maybe it's because of my Guillotine League leanings, I want steady performers every week. And that's the opposite of Mike Evans. Oh for sure. Man, did he have some dude games.
Yeah he was. There's just the offensive was not the same Lester. He was going pretty high in drafts. Oh it was him, and he was going way above Chris Godwin. I think Chris Godwin, I don't think you finished. Godwin is coming out the ACL injury and fairness exactly so. And I mean, there's all this talk of Julio Jones, Russell Gage, just old line, the running backs, like everyone though, there's going to run it back. There were to be an NFC championship game again, and it was just gonna
be all the happy times going forward. But it was not that. It was not that by any means. Yeah, and I thought the offensive line worries turned out to be dead on. I mean that offensive line was awful and that and certainly affected the passing game, infected the offense um. All right, well let's talk about this. What kind of player do we have in Mike Evans. Well, I was looking at some of this stuff. I was looking at reception, perception. Matt Harman does a great job
over there. You can pay for it, but it's a great job. He looked at. He breaks down a route trees, kind of how we talked about with Jamison Williams earlier. And during his first two seasons with Tom Brady, he ran go balls on eighteen point five percent of his routes in twenty twenty twenty one percent in twenty twenty one. In twenty twenty two, that went all the way up to twenty eight percent. When the old line was seemingly worse. You would think they'd want to do more quick passes,
and I just send him down the field. I mean, he's not gonna have time to hit the ball right, So that I thought that was very interesting. He also Matt Harmon also wrote in that article he also struggled on digs and out routes more than he had in the past, which could be indicator of declining and he needs to be thirty this season. I'm worried if you ask me whether or not Mike Evans has got one more big season left in him. Nope, Yeah, I'm with you on this one. I don't I've never really been
on Mike Evans. I don't know why. I think it's because I value receptions and target share a lot. And it felt like even when Tom Brady was there, it was two yard fades touchdowns in the back of the end zone, which I mean you could kind of count on for the whole career. Well, no, and it's what that big body he is. That was one of the things you could countdown was touchdowns because he could box out defenders so easily win those jump balls. I loved
that part of Mike evans career. I'm just worried now for even a guy who hasn't relied on speed and was won with physical play. But there's a point at which you have to have enough speeds you can separate, and if you don't, then the wheels just come off. And I look at the identically built Brandon Marshall, and I mean identically built. They are to the pound, to the exact same height. He hit the wall at age thirty one, and it was game over for Brandon Marshall.
At that point he couldn't separate anymore and his productivity ended and he was He had been winning with physical play, not speed, But you have to be able to get some separation. My worry on Evans is that he's already here at age thirty. He's right where Brandon Marshall was. And I don't trust the quarterbacks that they have in Cleveland to make the situation any better for Mike Evans in Tampa Bay. Sorry, copy, Yes, I'm totally with you
on the quarterback thing. I dug into the numbers. These are Baker Mayfield's wide receiver and there finishes all average points per game twenty nineteen. Jarvis Lanzi twenty two OBJ wide receiver thirty three not great. Twenty twenty, Jarvis Landry wide receiver thirty eight, OBJ wide receiver thirty nine, that's not good twenty twenty one, Jarvis Lanzry wide receiver thirty nine, Don and People's Jones wide receiver seventy eight terrible twenty
twenty two. DJ Moore wide deceiver fifty three. Over the first five weeks that Mayfield was the starter, right, atrocious. Yeah, those are of terrible numbers, and it suggests that Baker Mayfield can't power a wide receiver to a meaningful play. Now, granted, Mike Evans is way better than all of these players outside of DJ Moore, better than a hobbled ob j better than Jarvis Landry, so he's better. He is better.
But I would say that it feels like Baker Mayfield is like if he's going to support anyone, I mean, Jarvis Landry WI sever twenty two, it isn't that bad. It feels like he kind of needs more of like the over the field, middle of the guy, the slot guy, the short routes kind of the stuff that Jarvis Landry was doing in Cleveland, and Mike Evans is not going to do that. I struggle, and I worry that Baker Mayfield can't throw the ball deep down the field, which
is where Mike Evans really excels at. Last year on deep passes, Baker Mayfield graded out by Pro Football Focus again on deep passes thirty second. Now I have reason to believe there are thirty two teams in the NFL tyler that would make him last way do the math real quicks out a nice um. So there's there's reason to doubt that Baker Mayfield can power Mike Evans to a resurgent ear, which worries me as well. Let's talk ADP and some of the players going around Mike. By
the way, obviously in Dynasty, for me, I'm out. I'm out of Mike Evans. Trade him now, I'm out of been already and you read draft, I'm done. Where's he going? Average draft position right now? Right now, he's the wide receiver thirty five. Oh, it's pretty low law he's ever been, including his rookie year, for sure. So the discount is already built into that draft position, which makes us a much more interesting conversation. Exactly, there's some of the players
around him, which is very interesting. Okay, I'll read him off all right, we'll start with go for it. Let's go Brandon, I Yuke. Who would you rather have? I'd rather have a part of the Niners' offense, honestly, I'm with you, Okay, Somna, I'd rather buy Yuke, all right.
Hollywood Brown, oh man, that's trick here, because you got the Kyler thing, and I know that Brown did nothing Hopkins now Hopkins on Hopkins, Hopkins might be gone, so I'm gonna I think I'd go Hollywood Brown right now, under the presumption that that passing offense needs to largely go through him. I also think Hollywood Brown is just a better player right now than like Evans, So Hollywood Brown Tyler Lockett, who is just vastly disrespected as I'd
rather Locke it. I mean, lock It. Lock It's good every year. Granted it's those explosive games like in for guillotine. Locket's always super dangerous, although he was much better last year with Gino Smith Locke. Locke's close. All right, George Pickens, I'd go Evans pick I would do on this. Pick I'm a little lower on Pis. Yeah, I wanted to see him way more consistency than I said. If you've got points for pancakes, I would pick Pickens, but I
think I'm gonna go with just in terms of fancy points. Yes, the last one very interesting. Chris Godwin, who's going wide receiver thirty one right now his teammate, which one would you rather have on the buck? Well? Okay, so we saw Baker Mayfield get Jarvis Landry up to wide receiver twenty two, right, and Landry is a slot over the middle style receiver, shorter patterns, just like Chris Godwin. I think Baker Mayfield's just his style of play is better
suited for Chris Godwin than it is Mike Evans. So yeah, I think i'd go Chris Godwin and just take my seven receptions for seventy yards and point three touchdowns that I'm gonna get out of Chris Godwin every week. I'm with you on that one, I think, especially. I mean, he's another year removed from the ACL injury, which I think is really gonna help help him kind of this season especially. But yeah, I'm I'm in on Chris Godwin.
I think a little more than I thought I was going to because he's wide receiver thirty one, So yeah, I'm taking him over Avidson drafts this year. All right, there you go.
