Episode description

Frank Stampfl and Jim Day open the program with Frank wondering if the showing of a blood moon over Kansas City will give the Chiefs and "anti-Patriots Nation" any leg up when the two teams meet in Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday; Jim explains that its going to take how the Chiefs play on the field, and believing in things up in the sky. Frank and Jim go over a way-too-early 2019 mock draft, with the guys questioning certain picks, like someone taking Le'Veon Bell without knowing his new team yet, and if Odell Beckham's injury history is now of great concern for people drafting him with a first or second round pick.  #FNTSY #NFL #fantasyfootball #OBJ #LevBell #Chiefs #Patriots #ArrowheadStadium #KansasCity #bloodmoon2019

You're listening to the Fantasy Sports Radio Network. Fantasy best Friends Forever. Welcome inside Studio thirty four for the Fantasy best Friends Forever. I am Frank Standfeld. No great susk Oh. This guy really needs to catch up on his wrestling because now we have a two day hiatus. I don't know what's going on with Jesus, he is not here today. You heard in the promo before the show, Sweet Sounds of Fantasy Taz Jim Day. We'll be joining me as

well today, Jim. What's going on? Hey, Frankie, how you doing, buddy? It's crazy. The next day, we're getting closer to football. That's exactly right, um, and we'll talk a little bit about that too. Uh. This weekend we got obviously the the a f C and the NFC championship games with the with the Chiefs hosting the Patriots and the Saints hosting the Rams. We'll talk about that a little bit. I want to get into the this Cam Newton injury, which starting to look a little bit more serious than

they kind of let on at first. And then I really want to dive into this mock draft because we've talked about it, kind of spoke about it a little bit yesterday at the end of the show, but I we haven't really been able to like, all right, let's go round by round kind of talk about what happened in this draft, will kind of takeaways. We have strategies that we noticed things we would do differently, and we're gonna try and do this, I would say periodically throughout

the offseason. I brought it up to Greg. I think like once per month we can kind of do a football mock draft just to kind of like stay in the know of what's going on and see how a DP and player movement changes within the draft based on you know, new o c s, new coaches, players who were being drafted in the NFL draft all season moves. So I think I think it'll be a really cool exercise to kind of, uh take each month and look to see how players are changing moving up and down

the draft board. But I do want to start with that Cam Newton injury Jim really interesting to me. Cam Newton comes out today, could miss the entire twenty nineteen season if he undergoes another shoulder surgery. Now, Cam Newton's not playing this weekend the Panthers and not like the playoffs. But I still think that this is huge information because you know a lot of people still had him ranked very early ranks. Now for had him rankings. You know,

a top ten quarterback. When he's on the field, we know what he can do. He actually performed quite well this year with Norv Turner as the o C. There, we know everything that Christian McAffrey was able to do. Owner David Tepper has already hinted at that, says, well, I got a quote from David Tepper. If you told me he took a year off and could recover and be fully recovered and everything else, and that's what it

took an extra year. Why wouldn't you do that? So it's you're kind of reading between the lines here, But a quote like that from the owner tells me it's not outside the realm of possibility. They could sit out an entire year. And we just saw another quarterback and Andrew look in a similar situation of this, where he did sit out an entire year. So I kind of throw this one your way, Jim, and then we'll talk about like the snowball effect, like how it affects everybody

else if that were to happen. What's your take on on this Cam Newton news. Look, this is just a possibility of what could possibly happen. Uh, you know, there's no guarantee any of this happens. There's no guarant he even needs a second surgery as of yet, So you know, it's really gonna come down to that, does he need a second surgery and if so, what are the what's

the productnosis after that? This is just you know, yeah, be honest, it's more like they're just finding something to write about in a day when there wasn't much to write about. Um, And this is big news, so everybody's going to talk about it. And I get that that's what newspapers are supposed to do. Um, But the fact that the matter is, we have no clue if this is gonna be reality and not. The only good thing for guys like you and me is it just gives

us something else to talk about. That's exactly right him. You know, I'm trying to find something here because to me, it's it's the middle of the week, it's Wednesday, it's hump day. Is it too early to start talking about the chiefs in the past. It's probably not too early, But you know, I still need to do my digging. You know, I thought I did enough digging last week, and you know, I ended up missing out on every single one of my bets, and you know, I owned

up to it on Monday, full transparency. You know my bets on Friday. We're brutal. And everything I've always told Greg is you know, what I tell people to do is what I do myself. So maybe I should start digging a little bit more into these games now. But yeah, we're trying, we're trying to find something to talk about. I just thought it was interesting, uh that quote from the owner there in Carolina. We know that Taylor Heineke and Kyle Allen were the next man up this year.

Now maybe they would go out and and try and get a more formidable backup quarterback. Not that those guys can't be, but they're just really not proven. Um, but what would it like, what would the the snowball effect be for everyone else? Because it's easy to say, all right, well, Christian McCaffrey would get more work, but more work. Can you really get more work? I don't think he's gonna

get more work. You can't say that. And and we saw Ron Vera come out at the end of the year and say, you know, maybe we do need to dial back Christian McCaffrey a little bit heading into next year. And then if there's no Cam Newton, we're talking about a situation where we've seen talented running backs before not able to perform because the quarterback that's on their respective teams is just not good enough to you know, drive the ball down the field whatsoever. We saw that this

year with David Johnson. Spoke about him a little bit yesterday, but he underperformed. We saw that, you know too, three years ago with with Todd Gurley, when you know it was Jeff Fisher and the quarterback situation with a mess,

it was Jared Goff as a rookie. So I do think that there's kind of like snowball effects here where Yes, it's very early, we're talking about possibilities, but this is very big because for people who have Christian McCaffrey and keeper dynasty, you want to be excited about him for for years to come. But if Cam Newton six sits out a year and that changes everything to me, well, I agree. I think every single offensive player takes a hit,

there's no doubt about it. And a lot of people want to say, oh, yeah, but you know, it benefits the running backs because young you know, young quarterbacks like to check down to the running backs, and that's absolutely false because the fact of the matter is that that's another talent. It takes time to learn how to get three for uestions and then come to the check down to the running back. It's not as easy as oh, I'm just gonna step back for the running back unless

that's in the game plan. Now. Fortunately for them, that will be in the game plan a lot for uh, Christian McCaffrey because that's what he does. Unfortunately, defenses know it, and with a different quarterback back there that not really as good a runner and not good as good a passer as Cam is that they're gonna be able to load up and try and stop that, So all of the offensive players would take a hit of Cam set there's no doubt about it unless they went out and

got another guy. But they don't really have the cap move to really go out and spend a lot of

money on a quarterback for one year. So it's gonna be interesting to see how they play that if that really does come, uh, you know to fruition, if that's what actually happens, Jim, do you think there's any regret whatsoever that the Panthers A C. J. Anderson has done in the playoffs and towards the end of the season, they're like, well, you know, we kind of had a formidable backup for Christian McCaffrey and the guy that potentially

he could have shared a workload with. I mean, even if it's only five to ten touches, see Anderson, see what you want about the guy, you would call him a meat ball. I mean everyone on Saturdays, you know, making fun of his weight. But he's been awesome and for further uh pushes the agenda of the running backs don't matter debate, But do you think there's any regret there from the Carolina Panthers, Well, there probably is, but again he wouldn't have gotten much work behind Christian McCaffrey

either way. I mean, he is their lead dog, there is no doubt about it, as a coaching staff that you know likes to run one back and that's what they do, so he wouldn't got much play. It worked out much better for him anyway. Now he's got a chance to go to the super Bowl and and went possibly win a super Bowl. So he landed in a great position for him and they're using him and you know, you can say what you want about to wait, but a few weeks ago he was out of football and

living a good life and not worried about it. So you know, I'm pretty sure he stopped working out and all that crap and didn't really think he'd get another shot this year. This just happened to fall in his lap and he's still showing people what he could do matching when he gets back in shape. I want to put a little bow on this Panthers thing, So just something to pay attention to, you know, don't lose any

sleep over it. But you know, if you you have McCaffrey, or d J. Moore or Curtis Samuel in Your Keeper or Dynasty Leagues. Let's kind of keep this in the back of your mind, this Cam Newton situation. I think it's one that's uh that we're gonna have to follow close see throughout the offseason, and you know, we'll pay attention more when the time comes, obviously, like if he has shoulder surgery, that will be a huge, a huge storyline, but it is something to pay attention to when it

comes to the likes of Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. Jim, there was a there was a tweet going around today that everyone's kind of quote tweeting and giving their responses. I'm gonna put you on the spot a little bit here. This was from Eric Alper on Twitter. At that Eric Alper, what movie traumatized you as a kid? I thought this was It kind of made me think a little bit. And I'm seeing responses from other people. I saw some

like the Poulter Guist whatever. My answer was The Shining, And I don't know how I ended up watching The Shining as a kid. I think it was like I stood up late one night, like after watching wrestling and it just kind of like came on. I think it was like up n at the time, the shiny I mean the scene was like all the blood flooding hallways

and all this stuff. Was there a movie that traumatized you as a kid, Jim, Oh, I'd have to say, Bambi, Um, you know, yeah when when, yeah, when Bambi's mother died. I mean that was that was that was tear jerking. I mean, oh my god, I go I couldn't live with it. Look at this. Do you believe that I

got a nice bridge for you? Um? For me? A movie like that, I'd have to say was probably, uh, probably Carry Carry was pretty pretty outside the box like that, And especially when the hand at the end comes out of the grave. I was it that Carrie? I mean it might be I've never seen the movie. I'm trying to think, Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure it was Carrie. And at the very end of the movie, a hand comes out of the grave at the very end, and a guy one of my friends was sitting behind me

grabbed my shoulder at the exact same time. I freaked. Carry six. This is the movie where like the ladies covered in blood, right, Like that's kind of like the famous poster. Yeah, watch this, I've never seen it. Yeah, that was pretty wild. I gotta check that out alright. So carry for me the Shining. You give us your responses in the chat uh comments call in eight four f three six seven nine. As Jim mentioned, it's Wednesday, it's hump day. Trying to find things to talk about.

We're talking about Cam Newton, talk about you know, movies that traumatizes. For Jim, it was Bambi and Carrie. For me, it was The Shining. The reason why I was I was a little flustered when they went to you, if we could put Jim back on the screen. This is what I kinda I like having Steve downstay. A lot of people don't know Steve. Steve is like our super graphics guy. The guy just comes up with like an awesome BFF frame for Jim Day, just like on the fly. So I was kind of it caught me off guard

because I wasn't expecting it. You look pretty good inside that frame, Jim. You might you might even look you sound good singing too. You said, yeah, I heard you practicing yesterday on the Frenzy. If you ask me, I think this frame looks a little bit better than than the Fantasy football Frenzy frame that. That's just my opinion. I'm gonna throw that out there. I like how the bottom curves up on the two sides. It gives me a nice little cot very. It's very innovative, like it

a lot. Uh. Speaking of the frenzy, I'm I'm not trying to start a show feud again or anything, but a question in the morning after I saw Corey coming back from a break singing and dancing to UH to an R and B song, I think the BFFs are are I think they're kind of I think I think we're starting to latch onto everybody a little bit. Like you got Jim singing do do do out of nowhere? You got you got Corey singing and dancing coming out of breaks. Now I kind of like, where where where

this is all moving? Jim? Yeah, I don't Jim. Jim prefer sticking to his drum roll. Um. I can't blame him for that one. Yeah, you actually I know that. You say that you you play in a band, Jim, You kind of like, I don't. I don't play in the band I play. I haven't played in the band in years. But I have a mini studio downstairs that I have some friends would do some work down there. So you do the drumming coming back from break? Is that actually what you play? Is that? What? Or do

you do? Like guitar? I played quite a few different instruments. I played drums, I played a little bass. I play pretty much all the brass instruments. I play a little saxophone. Music has always been my love. I played. I played trumpet four years in high school. Ah see, That's what I started out with in third grade, was playing trumpet. I played it all the way up until ninth grade. And then I had a music teacher in high school who decided he was going to teach me every brand

brass instrument every year, baritone, tuba, trombone. So I learned them all in four years from him, and he was just awesome. I spent almost all of my English class courses in the band room learning how to play brass instruments. I mean, you're way soon the F and T s y uh symphonic band myself, we'll have uh. I don't know. I can see Greg playing like a like a xylophone or something, you know, like banging the little bells, uh, Corey. I don't know, he could be like a bass drum

like in the background something like that. We'll figure it out anyway. I did want to touch on the this Chief's Patriots game a little bit with what's going on with uh the weather and then also with this the super wolf blood moon thing is it's actually kind of an awesome story, Jim, where you know, the Chiefs kind of need every ounce of like mystique or you know, magic that they can get because we already know the uh, the magic and the mystique that lives behind Brady and

Belichick and the Patriots this time of season. But I don't know, have you seen this story with the super wolf blood moon that apparent only is going to be evident in the sky in Kansas City, Missouri. There you go the super wolf blood moon which will be uh shining its brightest at eleven twelve pm Sunday night, which is kind of like an hour or hour and a half after the game is supposed to end. Um, have you seen this story? And no? Is there something mystical

I play here, Jim? Because we need all we could get in we as in like anti Patriots nation, like we need everything that we can get here, Jim. Well, you know, look this this back in the day when things like this happened, a full lunar eclipse on top of a blue moon. Uh. And it doesn't happen very often in the history, but back in the old days, this is where God's came from. That. You know, gods were developed because they could do things like that, and

they were you know, reverend because of that. And you know, there's still too many people I believe in that that stuff. This's just just a happening that happens on a cyclical basis every certain amount of time, and you know, not really a lot of mystical stuff to it. But you know, the chiefs will grab it any straw they can beat the beat Brady and the Patriots. It's just as simple as that, as like everybody else's do. Nobody wants spell Check and the Patriots to get there, except for their

their fans. Nobody outside of that group wants them to get there. Again, are you Are you a Patriots hater, Jim? Or you just kind of like whatever, Like you respect them, like I respect the Patriots. I'm just tired of watching them. I feel, I think like a lot of people feel the same way, but Giants fans are kind of all over the Matt greg doesn't really says he doesn't really care about the Patriots. Are Are you in that camp or are you just kind of like tired of as well?

I love the Patriots. I know for a fact when we play, all right, Jim, you're gonna have to go no, no, just because I know if we get there to play and we'll beat him. Outside of that, you know, I have not but respect for them. Things that they've done is just incredible. And you can say what you want about them in all the the flake gates and all the other crap they goes on, not like any other team doesn't do that stuff. I have nothing but respect.

They just keep winning. Don't believe the hype and everything that you've heard about the weather right now in this game, it's going to be a high of nineteen degrees, very cold, but no win, no precipitation. The over undern game is dropping. We'll be back right after this. Fantasy Best Friends Forever Daily rodo dot Com learned from the game's best DFS players. We don't just give you advice. It's just not my cup of tea. Um. I like a lot of different music. I you know, I used to like the early rap back before you know, every woman became a bit yaho or every guy became a gangster. Um. You know, I used to like it back then. Uh.

You know. Outside of that, No, I don't like the old country, you know, twanging guitar country like my dog got run over by train now, you know, that kind of stuff. But outside of that, I like most music. I'm with you completely. I can't really I don't like country music at all, really like even the stuff that's out now. Uh and toes in the water as in the stand, Like, I can't like country music is not my thing. I tried to be all over the map

when it comes to music. I try to stay up to date with like hip hop, like dance, electronic, like I listen to Medal, listen to Metallic like I try to keep up with everything. I'm with you. The one thing I just can't do country music, Jim, I can't do country. I don't mind the fast country music because I mean that's as close to rock as you're gonna get. We touched on the first round a little bit last week for but for those who were listening or watching and didn't get a chance. And I'm told that we have a graphic as well. Uh, kind of tough to see, you know, maybe put on the glasses squint a little bit, but uh, this is uh, these are the results of the six rounds from the

mock Draft. You could also head on over my Twitter at roto underscore Frank if you want to follow along to see what we're talking about. This was a twelve team PPR. We only did six rounds. The first round looked like this, Sae Kwon Barkley, Levian Bell pick number two. Kind of polarizing pick. We talked about it. Todd Gurley pick number three, Ezekiel Elliott, Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara, James Conner, Jujuice Smith, Schuster, Julio Jones, Melvin Gordon, Michael Thomas, and

DeVante Adams. So we have one, two, three, four wide receivers in the first round, and we have eight running backs. For everyone who was saying, you know, it was gonna be as running back heavy as it is it's going to be heading into next year, Jim I was a little surprised to see that there were still four wide receivers in the first round. That kind of feels like where we've been at the past couple of years, Like four or five wide receivers in the first round, six seven,

eight running backs. That kind of seems like where it's been. Um. So, I don't know that we see a huge change in terms of uh, you know, the running back the first round just being food with running backs. What was your takeaway for the first round? Well, it's definitely some people in here trying to get us to talk about their picks and I get that, um, And you know, it is what it is. It trying to sensationalize it is one thing. Trying to do it to where you're helping

others is a different thing. Um. You know, I just don't see how you can put ballot number two with the unknowns that that sit there. And you know, Juju Smith had a great year, but with all the unknowns there, how could you have him as the first wide receiver off the board. Outside of that, the numbers are close,

I mean really depends on who you're drafting with. If you're drafting with a bunch of Sharks, there could be a lot more wide receivers go in the first round because they like that wide receivers start outside of that. Most normal common drafts, running backs are gonna go somewhere in the eight to four or you know, seven to five ranking in the first round. And you know, the funny part is gonna be next year whether or not. Uh, there's people out there reaching for Pat Mahomes in the

first I won't be surprised if it happens. I'll tell you that, especially in six point passing touchdown leagues. It's just what he did this year, how far ahead he was. H then you know, even the next closest quarterback, who I believe was Andrew Look right, that finishes a QB two. I'll pull that up and see what the difference was. But I do know that Patrick Mahomes was far and away the best quarterback. It wasn't really close, Levan Bell.

The number two overall pick was Dame Martinez Spitting speeds. You watch him here on the network. You hear him every morning with Rodal Experts in the morning and fs T with Scott Engel and Mike Bluett, respectively. You see him Tuesday and Thursday nights here doing the Fantasy Freestyle. So you want to call in ask him about his pick. Of Levian Bell at number two overall. You can ask you certainly can ask him, and you can do that yourself. What he told me is that his expectation would be

Levan Bell lands with the Colts. We've kind of talked about that a little bit over the past couple of weeks. I don't see that happening, even if, even if, even if it doesn't, it won't happen. It won't happen, happen, I agree with it won't happen. He will be He'll still be a first round pick. He won't be the second overall pick. I think he's kind of closer to you know, where James Conner went in this In this draft, seventh overall, Melvin Gordon went tenth overall. That was my pick.

I think Levian Bell is kind of closer to that range. Um, even if he ends up with the Jets, I still think he's a borderline first round pick. You know, Jim, I'm gonna try and go the entire show today without talking about the Jets head coach. Um, I'm just gonna call it. I'm not gonna refer to his name anymore because I've been talking about him too much. But when was the last time that in New York Jet was

a first round pick for fantasy. I actually had to think about it, and I think the answer is Curtis Martin. To be honest, Oh yeah, yeah, I have to agree with you. I can't think of anybody else that ever had that possibility, and even he was, you know, late first round. Um, so yeah, I can't think of anybody else, to be honest with it, It's been a long time. Brandon Marshall was closed a couple of years ago after the huge season he had with the Jets. I feel

like he was the second round pick that year. There was some hype around Sean Green like during the Rex Ryan days, but he was never a first round pick either. So it'll be interesting, do you do? You agree? And there's still a lot that needs to happen with like the Jets coaching staff and stuff. But if Levin Bell went to the Jets, it's still not an ideal situation for him fantasy wise. Would he still be a first round pick if he's on the Jets. Look, he's got

the talent. We know that. You know, he's definitely a talented man, and he's gonna get a chance somewhere. Uh, look, with the chats, I think he could put up good numbers. I think it actually helps Donald to have a running back like him that you know, they can't just sit back and pin their your ears on trying to stop Donald, So I think that helps. Um. It really just so much they have to do there. There's so many pieces

they need to fix and and bring in. You know what, whether it's gonna be wide receivers, what are they gonna do with that offensive line? And if they want to improve that or not, I think they should. So there's so many different pieces that are gonna come into play here. But I think he's gonna be a good running back wherever he goes. I think he's good enough that it wasn't just the Pittsburgh system that made him good. I think he's good enough on his own to do it anywhere.

So it'd be interesting to see where he does land. But there's no just just no way. Everybody should just stop the Indie talk. There's absolutely no way he goes to Indy. I guarantee you sounds like you need to make a bet with with Dane Martinez. Dan Martinez being the betting man that he is I'm sure he would take you up on that. Um, well, we'll set it up. We'll set it up. I'll be the voice of Jim Day when I see Dane Martinez in the fantasy pit

of misery. Over the next couple of days, I see a couple of people in the chat talking about Latainian Tomlinson when he was a member of the Jets. He was all right with the Jets, but that was kind of the twilight of his career. He was. He was not a first round pick at that point anymore. I remember I had him in fantasy. He was still old right.

Looking at his two thousand ten with the Jets, nine fourteen rushing yards, six touchdowns, he had fifty two receptions, but he wasn't anywhere close to a first round pick. I feel like he was being drafted more as like a flex option that year. How do you remember going down, Jim, I don't. I don't think he was close first he was definitely, Yeah, he wasn't a first round pick by

that time. Like he said, it was at the end of his career, and you know, most of us realized that he wasn't gonna put up those kinds of numbers, even with them, um, and he didn't. I mean, he had a good season, but not a ridiculous season. And you know, the proper move was not to draft him in the first. But I'm sure in some drafts somebody out there saw the name drafted him in the first somewhere, but it wasn't a consensus at all. Most had him going.

I do believe in those last couple of years, like third round with when it comes to Patrick Mahomes, I said I was gonna pull this up. In six point passing touchdown leagues, he was the number one quarterback. He threw. He had five hundred seventeen fantasy points. The new or two quarterback was actually Matt Ryan. It was not Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck was fourth. Matt Ryan had four hundred and twenty three, so he was nearly a hundred fantasy points

behind Patrick Mahomes. Um. But again, we you know, we gotta project forward. Just because Patrick Mahomes tood for five thousand yards and fifty touchdowns this year doesn't mean that he's going to do it next year. But I do still agree with you. I think, you know, especially in some of those you know, some some of the like those standard home league kind of leagues like I could

see someone reaching for a Patrick Hohomes in the first round. Jim, I wanted to bring up this strategy to you, and it's kind of a zig when everyone else is zagging for next year. Adam Roynas took Devantae Adams twelfth overall. You can hear Adam Roynas on the network every week night seven eight pm for Scout Fantasy Sports. But he took Devantae Adams and Nick Chubb. I have no problem with those picks. I actually like those picks a lot.

Something I said once the regular season actually ended was I think a viable strategy for next year would be pairing guy if you're at the end to the first round. Devontae Adams and Tyree killed together because to me, it's the perfect combination of war and ceiling. Because Davanta Adams, as great as he was this year, I think that there's another level for him. I think he can get even better. He did what he did this year, finishing

as a top three wide receiver. I believe he wasn't the number one wide receiver through sixteen weeks, but he didn't play week seventeen. If Aaron Rodgers gets back to being Aaron Rodgers. I mean, there's another level that Davanta Adams can get to. There was no wide receiver more consistent than him at least eight yards or a touchdown in every single game that he played. And then we

know the upside that Tyreek Hill has. So everyone's saying running back, running back, running back, Jim, But I think if you para guy like Davanta Adams with Tyree Hill at the end of the first round for next season, that's fun. It's not gonna be fun trying to figure out your running back position, but I'll be hard pressed to find a better wide receiver duo than those two

heading into next year. It's not even about that though, It's about picking the right ones, um the duo, you know, the first duos, whatever you pick, whatever positions, it's about you know, hitting the right guys. And you know, unfortunately, there's a good chance that no matter who gets picked in the top twelve, five of them aren't gonna live up to expectations. That's just the norm. We see that

every year. Five first round picks usually just don't live up to, you know, everybody's expectations and her teams and so it You know, you could you could say that about any one of these combinations. You know, you give me DeAndre Hopkins and and Adams or Hopkins and Hill or any of those guys I think are great combinations. But they have to hit, they have to stay healthy, they have to be on the field, and they have

to keep making plays no matter what their names are. So, you know, one of my things, and I try to tell everybody this is don't get locked into positional wants in rounds. Take you know, the especially early in the draft. Take take the best player available to you at that point in the draft, and be happy with it. You know, he's got to hit, of course, he's got to stay healthy, of course, But the same thing goes for every single

one of them. Take the best player available. And then as you build into the draft, then you start to build up your you know your bench, and you know your other starters. But those first first few rounds should always be best player available. As far as I'm concerned. When you go into a draft thicket, okay, well I want to get wide receiver wide receiver to start, you're

limiting in your entire options. If I had gone into this draft ticket, Okay, I'm gonna get a running back and round one and a wide receiver in round two, and that's what I'm gonna do. I wouldn't have got David Johnson in the middle of the second round. And to me, David Johnson Mills second round is how the hell do you pass up on that? People, you know, say what you want that this was a bad year. He was still a top ten running back. And I have to expect this offense gets better next year with

the changes. Uh, you know, I think they're gonna be putting the ball up more often. I think they have to do better. They can't do any worse. So, you know, when you put that into perspective, if I go into that second round knowing I'm gonna grab a wide receiver, then it just limits all my possibilities. And I think that's a good point. How many questions do we get come July, come August, Jim, where it's like, how should I start my draft? Should I start my draft R

B RB? Should I start, you know, in the first four round? Should I go RB RB, wide receiver, wide receiver? There's a ton of questions like that every single year, And Jim's right, I mean, you do take best player available. It's it's a cliche. It's a fantasy cliche. It's been around forever, but I do still believe in it. And it's you can't win your league in the first round, but you could certainly lose your league in the first round.

And Jim mentioned it every single year, there's gonna be you know, three, four, five different players who are drafted in the first fifteen picks that let people down. I have preseason a d p up right now. Levian Bell was taken second overall, probably the biggest bust in in fantasy football history. You know, not because of injury or anything else, but we all know what went down with Levian Bell. Leonard Fournette was the eighth player being drafted overall.

Bust uh Kareem Hunt depends on who you ask. When he was on the field, he was not a bus but the fact that he only played you know, nine ten games, whatever it was, he busted. Um Odell Beckham was going twelfth overall. When he's on the field, sure he was great, but he still didn't play the final what four or five weeks of the season. That's four players right there, and if you extended to the thirteenth pick Dalvin Cook. He was undoubtedly a bus is here.

So that's five players in the top thirteen of a DP from this past season that busted. And you're right, it's trying to identify each year which guys in the early rounds we're gonna And you can put David Johnson in that category if you want to. But again, like he finished, you can't. You can't underperformed. I wouldn't call him a complete bust though, Jim, I don't call him a bus It was a top ten running back. He

underperformed expectations. Granted I can't say he didn't. Everybody you know took him as a top three back expected him to have another big bounce back here. I get that didn't live up to those expectations. But man, there's no way in the world you can cop call a top ten running back in fantasy bust. I'm sorry, folks, it just doesn't work that way. I do agree with you, um when it comes to what I said about Davanta Adams and tire Hill. Not that again, you don't want

to pencil yourself into wide receiver wide receiver. Well, the case that I was making for this strategy was, it's just Davanta Adams provide such a safe floor, at least he did this year. I would expect him to do the same again next year, such a safe floor, and we know Tyreek Hill has that big upside. I just thought that in terms of chemistry, right, it was like they're just like kind of a perfect match, a match

made in fantasy heaven. One might say you didn't like the Jujuic Smith Schuster pick at eight, again a polarizing pick, But Jim, if Antonio Brown does get traded, which it seemed more more likely that it's going to happen, where is Juju Smith? Where should he be drafted? That's warranted? You know what I'm saying? Like, should he go that high? Should he be the wide receiver one off the board? Should he be a top five wide receiver? Should he be on the swing there at the first can round?

How high it's too high for Juju? If Antonio Brown is trated, look I think he's gonna be a you know, top five, top six wide receiver. Off Brown is gone. The problem is we just don't know. Having Brown on the other side doesn't put Juju against the top corners. Most often now, if he's the number one, he will face that. We just don't know if he can do

that on a consistent basis. I think he will. But to draft him as the first wide receiver off the board against guys that have already done that, I can't see that. Jim, does it make you feel better that Juju Smith Houster predominantly plays in a slot, so we know that typically the best team's cornerback doesn't typically doesn't travel into the slot all that often. Does that make you feel a little bit better about Juju? Real quick? We only have about, you know, thirty seconds then not really?

I think that you know, with this offense, James Washington being the next guy up, I think that top corner will be on him fair enough. I'm gonna continue talking about our early twenty nineteen mock draft. You can check out my Twitter for the results. At Rhoda Underscore Frank, we have the graphic popping up in and out. I gotta move into the second round because as usual I'm taking too long talking about the first round here in this mock draft. The second round Come on now, Nick Chub, Tyreek Hill, DeAndre Hopkins, Antonio Brown, Damien Harris to the same owner that drafted

Judic Smith. Choose here. That was Davis Maddick, Adam Feeling, David Johnson, Odell Beckham Jr. Travis Kelsey, Mike Evans, t Y Hilton, Joe Mixing. We had Davis on the show last Friday. We asked him about his pick of Damien Harris. Basically, he said, every single year in the NFL Draft, there is a running back needy team that that draft, you know, one of these uber talented running backs out of college, and it's just it's a match made in heaven for fantasy.

Once again, not to the same extent that like Sae Kwon Barkley was, but you know, we have had two top five running backs two years in a row that we're rookies. Two years ago was Kareem Hunt, This year it was last year was cream Hunt. This year it was sa Kwon Barkley. I think this might be a little bit of a recency bias with like rookie running back things. Um, I don't know. I don't really have anything else on Damian Harris. You know, I haven't even

like scouted the guy. I don't watch a lot of college football admittedly, Jim, Uh, I don't know if you have anything on Damian Harrison. You know, is that a lot of you know, draft knicks that I do follow, and I'm not as big into it like you, So I follow a few guys that know it and follow it well, and you know, for most of them, he's not even the number one running back on the board.

It's David montgomer right that a lot of people are hyping up right, So you know, I mean at this point to take a shot on any rookie where you don't know where they're gonna go and all that stuff. Again, we're talking about to pick. So good job, Davis. There you go for those wondering about the tight end situation. Travis Kelsey went in the second round here. He was the first tight end drafted at pick twenty one overall

to Scott Angel. Odell Beckham, very polarizing, went in the middle of the second round to Greg Susman homer Um. But Jim, I want to ask you about Odell Beckham. I feel like you might be closer to me in terms of how you feel about it, because I feel like you just let so many people down the past couple of years. He is a guy that can still return first round value. They gotta figure the quarterback situation

whether they draft one where it's Eli Manning. Again, do you like this pick of Odell Beckham in the middle of the second round? Uh? Like, would you have gone with like a guy like Mike Evans or t Y Hilton over him? Because I I kind of feel like those guys are all in the same range. I think I might draw the line at like Robert Woods. I don't know if I could take Robert Woods over Odell Beckham, but Mike Evans and t Y Hilton, I feel like you can make a case for taking those guys over

Odell Beckham. So you ken, you know, they've been on the field for the most part, although Hilton was injured I mean basically second half of the season, but still came out and played every game, played well. Uh So nothing against that and Mike Kevans. To me, I'm not a huge Mike Kevan's guy, just because while his end of year numbers always look good, Uh, it's so up and down for week to week, and a lot of that's the offense. Now with Bruce arians said, that might

very well change. Um, you know, I keep saying this, and a lot of people don't agree with me, but I bet Arians does everything he can to keep the Shawn Jackson in Tampa Bay because he fits what Arians wants to do perfectly. Um. You know, Arians loves to go get the ball down the field in a hurry. Winston can throw the deep ball and Djax, I mean one of the best in the league for you know,

making those big explosive plays. He's not a you know, big PPR guy where he's gonna catch eight or ten balls a game, but you know when he catches the big ones, they're usually for big plays. So, uh, you know, Evans a little outside mine and normally because of that my hesitation with him, it almost always comes down to somebody else is gonna grab him before me. Um t hy Hilton, I really like, especially with Luck coming back, Uh, so that that's not a bad pick. Really comes down

to whether O'Dell can stay on the field. Let's face facts. He he's missed basically an entire season out of the last two sixteen games out of the last thirty two. Um, you know, hard to get past that. He needs to stay on the field. You know, in late in the second round, I don't have any problem with taking the shot that he does stay healthy. But but you know, because he had does have the talent, like he said, he could easily come out of the season as a

number one and wide receiver. There's no doubt in my mind you could do that if he plays sixteen games. Even with Eli um So, you know, that doesn't bother me so much as much as the injury concerned, and hopefully you can get past that doesn't become a thing

every year, Jim. In the third round, we saw Stefan Diggs go with the first pig, then Zach Ertz, Dalvin Cook, Robert Woods, first Rams wide receiver off the board by the way, Keenan Allen, George Kittle, Randon Cooks, Amari Cooper, Philip Lindsay, Aaron Jones, Damien Williams, and then A J. Green. So by the middle of the third round, Jim Day had picked six. George Kittle was who he drafted all three of the top the elite tight ends and Kelsey Earths and George Kittle were gone by the middle of

the third round. I think that's worth mentioning they all went inside the top thirty picks. Um So Jim, you spoke about George Kittle a little bit and how you probably wouldn't do this strategy again. Um, I'll throw that at you your way, like afting a tight end early. Robert to Robert Woods be the first Rams wide receiver off the board as well. I'll throw those two your way because I know he's coming off an a C

L injury. It's very risky. You can't argue that Cooper Cup was was the most productive wide receiver when all three were on the field this year. So I'll just kind of throw those your way. Look, I love Robert Woods. I like the fact that they use him in all aspects. They can move them inside and out, they use him in the running game. Uh, Cooper Cup is more a bigger play guy. He gets you know, touchdown chances in the red zone a lot more often, so you know

that comes into play as well. But you know Woods, I like Woods. Um, I think it could even be better than what we're seeing out of him now. And that was pretty good, although he did curtail you know, the last month, like the entire offense did. After that big Monday night game, they went on buy and came back and just weren't the same for the rest of the season. Um, you know, they had some injuries and stuff they had to deal with. So I don't play some part of it. Um, you know, I can't fault that.

But go back to you know, taking Kittle there. This is one of those points where I didn't take what I considered to be best player available. I wanted to see what the result would be after that pick if I did take, uh the tight end, one of the big three tight ends that early and uh, he's kid will calling me now. So uh so you know I

wanted to see. I didn't like it. I mean I did come back and get Cooper Cup, Tyler Lockett and Courtland Sutton is my top three wide receivers, which I could live with, but I would have liked one of those better wide receivers there, um, like a Robert Woods or you know, maybe even a Stefon Diggs. Um. But again, this was all part of what I wanted to see what would happen grabbing one of the big three tight ends in those first three rounds. Uh, don't love it.

I think there's gonna be some better play out of some of the tight ends next year. I know this is what's gonna happen going into next year's draft. It is because you know, they were only three four consistent tight ends all year, adding Ibron to that list, that they're gonna be drafted early. They just are all pretty much all of them because after that it got to be such a bad mess of guys not playing well. I mean, you couldn't even stream tight ends this year

because no matter who's stream, they were terrible. Um, So you know, people are gonna be jumping on these guys that did well this year, but you know, you got other guys that might not have had a good season this year that I expect more from next year. And of course that's Jack Doyle coming back. I still think he's going to be the number one and in the um having Ingram coming back healthy. He finally saw a little bit of what he can do at the end of the season, but we saw what he could do

last year. He's a He's a very talented young tight end that if he stays on the field for sixteen games, is gonna be right in this mix. The one guy that's really gonna take a hit this year that you know, not too many people are talking about right now, it's

gonna be o J. Howard. Um. You know, while I love Bruce Arians and all he's gonna do in Tampa Bay, the one thing we know about Bruce Arians is he doesn't utilize the tight end as much as most other coaches do, and tight ends usually take a back seat, even if they're talented. So you know, a lot of people I think are gonna be overdrafting O J. Howard just based on the fact of the play he had before he got hurt. And I get that, but they're

gonna be sadly disappointed. J Howard is an interesting one, and I looked into this myself with Bruce Arians when he was calling plays with the Arizona Cardinals offense. I believe they never exceeded it was like four d and fifty yards or three touchdowns in any season with Bruce Arians there calling the offense. UH, to be fair, they didn't have a tight end as talented as OJA Howard, so that would be my defense, but you're not wrong. They He definitely did not utilize the tight end with

the Cardinals. I believe it was Jermaine Gresham was probably the most talented guy that he had back then, just referring to Robert woods Um talk a lot about consistency on the show here the Fantasy Best Friends Forever um at least sixty one receiving yards in every game but two this year, and that was Week seventeen, and that was also Week one, Robert would so you know, he was very consistent. You can't deny that. And he had

three yard receiving games. That is Robert woods Um. Damian Williams, Jim, I know how you feel about Damian Williams. Uh eleventh round, eleventh pick of the third round. Is that warranted as of right now? Oh? Heck no, I think that's terrible pick, Absolutely terrible. This guy should be going in the second round at least. To get to the third round was

just unbearable. And again, if if I wasn't trying the tight end position in that third round just to see what would happen, if he had still been there when I picked, he wouldn't have been. I would have started three running backs just to get him. Jim, Realistically, if this team does not draft a running back, and if it's just if it's Damian Williams and Charke Hendrick West heading into next year, where does Damian Williams get drafted. He is he first round pick. No, I think he's

the second round pick. Because still people are gonna be, you know, a little wary of you know, them bringing somebody else. If they don't draft anybody, then won't start to see him come up. If they don't grab anybody in free agency, will start to see him come up more. But I have no doubts this guy is gonna be there starting running back next year. He's proven that if you've got a believer, but now then you're just not watching football. He's doing everything they're asking for from him,

and he's doing it well. Um. You know, he not only can run outside and hit the corner's edge is really good, he catches the ball really good. Give him the ball up the middle and he'll smash mouth with the best of them. This kid is going to be a starting running back next year for the Kansas City Chiefs, and he's going to be a value pretty much anywhere outside the top fifteen pick. Before we sign off YouTube, I do want to just kind of pose a question to everyone out there and and bring up a very

polarizing word this time of year, and it's baseball. Because I've had a few people ask me, you know, when is the Fantasy Best Friends Forever We're gonna start talking about baseball, because you know, there has been stuff that happened in the off season, and you know, every it seems like everyone's doing best Ball drafts already, which is like, it's way too early. It's January, guys, Like we still

have the NFL playoffs going on. But either leave a comment tweet at me right in the chat right now, ideally, like when would you like us to start talking about baseball? Because you know, I want to get the people's reaction. I want to know what you guys think, like do you want us to start talking about baseball now? Like should we sprinkle it in a little bit? Should we have like on a Wednesday instead of talking about Cam Newton's injury, should we be doing a baseball segment? Let

us know. I wanna, I wanna. I want to hear from you guys and find out when should the Fantasy BFS and I guess really everybody on the Fantasy Sports Radio network start talking about baseball more and specifically fantasy baseball. With that, I do want to sign off YouTube. Coming up next is the Fantasy Football Frenzy, Corey Parkson, the Fantasy Executive, Jim Day and the Closer Your Boy Risk

Venture coming up next. Please make sure that you rate, review, subscribe, give us a thumbs up on YouTube, Uh, wherever you listen to the podcast, whether it's iTunes, Google Play, make sure you subscribe, leave us a review, a comment, so on and so forth. We do appreciate it very very much. The one quick thing, Yes, yes, sergeon, I did finally get my My Black Book by Joe Pisapia yesterday and friends, uh, including Jake Seey, the all in Kid, and the check

the Link guy. Um, so I'm kind of looking forward to reading that. Man. Joe does such a great job on these books. I've always gotten a football one. This is the first time I've gotten a baseball one, so I'm really looking forward to getting into that and and uh really get my chop set for baseball. Yeah, I saw the tweet last night, Jim. You know you thinking Joe Pizzapia and Jake Seely and the rest of the guys that helped contribute to that book. They do do

a great job every single year. I know Joe does it for football. He does it for baseball. Um, so there you go. Shameless plug for the for the Black Book here, but yeah, always worth throwing it out there for friends of the program. Joe Pizzapia was here. He did a great job and rightfully so, so I do appreciate you throwing it out there. Jim, you're gonna you're starting to work baseball into your repertoire. I see, well, yeah, I'm gonna. I'm not sure how much how much Corey's

gonna like that? Uh is what is? Um? If I want to get Cory, I'll just start talking about hockey. Um, so we we know he doesn't like hockey. Um, you know, I know he doesn't like baseball either. But yeah, whatever I could do to get under his skin is always fun, um because he's so much fun when you know, it's I do the same thing to to uh, to Chris. You know, you get under this skin, you get him a little amped up. It's always good radio. So I like doing that. But um, yeah, you know I've been

asked to to get into baseball. It's been you know, probably five years since I played in the baseball league. So right now it's all a matter of relearning the names and where they are what teams and you know, going through that stuff, and and of course looking at all of breaking a hundred new stats that they use in baseball. Now yards were bad, you're about to uh, you don't know what you can yourself into here. I'm out here, you know, I'm looking into the I've done

my catcher rankings. I'm working on my first base rankings. I'm out here looking at exit velocity, launch angle. Jim, I'm out here looking at hard hit rates. I'm looking at strikeout rates. We're gonna outside swing percentages with rates. Yeah, that's okay. I'm not gonna be looking at all at I'm gonna look at stick to the like batting average, runs, r b i s, home runs, stolen bases, like you know what people have done over the past months, like

look at trends. I will throw this out there. Mendo. Bruce asked us to talk more about the NBA. So maybe that's something that I could work in with Brag Sussman as well. As you know. We we wind down with the super Bowl in the football see he's in here, but coming up next the Fantasy Well Frenzy Jim Day will stay on for Fantasy Taz Frank Stanfeld, thank you so much for watching and listening.
