8/16 Action Hour: Auction Draft Strategies and more...

Ladies and gents. This is the Yeah Hour and over two pfs. The Action Hour is here alongside Eric Young, I am Greg Sausman gave a bit of an auction primer. Is there with Brian kendrick Y, I feel like I feel like you're in a good spot in this league. Yeah, yeah, for sure. I Mean the truth is is he uh he's one of the most whimsical dudes. I know. He's just uh is super intelligent. Uh. He thinks probably more than any human being should. Um. And it's I love

being around the guy. He's always jovial, he's always in a good mood. And some of my best conversations I've had in and around wrestling have been with Brian kendrick There. So he's a super cool guy loves fantasy football. Um. The reality is is most of the guys like look like, if you added up the hours of preparation, I'm gonna I'm gonna surpass every single one of them in the league by double triple. That's just the reality I am. I'm a lunatic, and that's fine. This is something that

I love to do. I've loved it for a long time. Every year my love for it seems to grow. Um because it's expanding. Um, It's out there in the world. It's one of America's favorite pastimes. I think one of the one of the favorite hobbies of of the United States and Canada is fantasy football. People play it, like my my wife plays it. Everyone plays it. It's a thing that you can talk about, uh, and I love talking about it. Um. So yeah, I mean true is the draft is one third of what we do. So

there's a bunch of knowledgeable guys in the league. But there are a bunch of guys that that they just don't follow along enough to know. So I don't take advantage of it because I like to win. You can tell the Brian Brian ket just from the hour that we spoke to him here he just thinks it overthinks and like, did you have to tell you girl for me three hours? Why? I don't know, I'm an idiot and wonder why did you spend the money on him? Man? Yere at all? You do whatever you want. And he's

just like there it is right there. You know, he thought about that pick, and he's overthought about that pick. And I think that what you get in your own hands sometimes with these things, it makes it much tougher. Yeah, for sure, it's and and part of that too, I think in an auction is we did talk of a little bit about it is the intimidation factor of you know, a guy, a person having more money you a guy that that that goes in quickly, like every every time

a buzzer goes off. I know Joe pizzapia um in his Black Book. I buy it every year. It's a super interesting read. Uh love love Joe Love the Black Book. Um. He talks about an auction strategy is you wait for the two on every single bid you do, because it wears people down. This is part of an auction. Don't kid yourself stuff like this. It's part of it for me. If I was to do one today. My approach would

be the same for every player. I'm I'm I'm going to wait to a certain amount on the clock, maybe not too I feel that's kind of a jerk move, but but the reality is is there is no rules when it comes to that. But I would want to keep a a constant strategy of when I bid, how I bid. Then that way there's no reading me. There's no oh, he's going in really quick, he really wants this guy. I might go in really quick four or five times on a guy that I know is going

to go for fifty bucks. If it's down to twenty five, I might do five or six bids until it gets up to thirty five or something, and then I cut off. I say, look, if if I'm gonna get Andrew Luckett at then then so be it. So I bid like a crazy person until twenty after it gets to twenty and said, okay, I'm out. It's really there's so much strategy there is, so there is so much strategy involved.

And I think you bring up this exhaustion factor again, and I think you're right about that, because if you bid every time when there's two seconds remaining on the clock, over and over and over again. You're gonna piss everybody off in the room. But ultimately people may say, you know, what's screw it, Let you have him. I'm not dealing with this crap anymore. Fine, you pissed everybody off. People have the better team, so you can't worry about that.

At the end of this, you're all friends anyway. So I think all up love and fantasy, and there is no rules when it comes to that kind of thing. So I think, whatever you feel comfortable with and do it. You know, like it's a different strategies is going to work for different people. You know, some people you know, they're they're gonna know that because I'm bidding a really quick. It doesn't make any difference, it doesn't. They know that. I mean, if they watch the show, then they know

there's players that I'm high on. They know there's guys that I'm going to go after. So a strategy for them would be to bid me up. You mean, like someone like Hunter Henry, who I have ranks in my number four. If you want me to spend money, then maybe you get into a bidding battle. I'm going to get him one of my players. I'm going to get him,

you know, like pretty much, no matter the cost. And part of that and maybe is ego, but part of that is that's a guy that I believe in, In my God, I believe he's gonna have a huge year. And there you know, of course there's a limit. I mean, I'm not gonna let someone bid me up to seventy dollars or something crazy like that. But no one's going to do that, like unless they're looking to lose. That's another thing, right when you are price enforcing, it doesn't

always work. Have you been Have you done that and got caught? Oh? Yeah, for sure. That The first one I did, the Man's League, the ESPN Man's League. I had no idea what I was doing. Also, I was driving on a highway with any earpiece in listening to my buddy and he's relaying the draft because I don't have a computer in front of me. Um. I mean I was short change to begin with. I I it was my first auction. I had no idea. It was a two quarterback league, which is my fault. You know,

I didn't do my research. And even if I would have, I probably would have waited, you know, too long for quarterbacks. And had you know, one good one in one one one not good one in the rally is if if you want if you're gonna start two quarterbacks, you have to have three sometimes four. So um And in the sixteen team league, quarterbacks went quick. So I mean I and they would go for crazy money and I was like, no, I'm not doing that. I can get so and so

for five dollars later that didn't happen. So it's and And the truth is is, like you said, like your price enforce, and I ended up with players I can't remember. I do remember in a couple auctions I've been in, I'm trying to price and force, and I end up with a guy that I don't want on my team. So it's you gotta be careful that it's just for me. It's a it's maybe it's just too stressful for me to deal with them. Why I don't do them. You can see right there, like the amount of thinking that's

going into it, and I and you haven't. You don't even do them anymore? Yeah, I mean I would gladly do them, but the realities of the leagues that I play in, UM, nobody wants to do them. They're two time consuming. No one has done them, so it's the fear of the unknown. Um, I mean, anyone can do it. It's it's just the dollar amount. It's no big deal, you know. I like guys in the n x T draft. I know one percent will come in with the magazine they bought at Walgreens and draft off that list. Don't

draft guys that ever. I mean, if you paid attention even a little bit, you would know they're out for the year. I mean, like will happen. They're literally they're literally giving your money to you. It's literally, and I'm willing to take me too. All Right, we have a lot of stuff that gets you here before I let you go, Um, especially about Melvin Gordon. I want to get into Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler here a little bit, as he's like Keenan Allen also, So there's a lot

for Sunday now Eric. One of the questions, I don't think we've talked about in a while. He's Melvin Gordon, the Zincue Elliott. We've continually brought it up because I guess Jerry Jones is more in the news, uh than Tom to LESCo and uh spanos out there in Los Angeles, there's a lot of talk about Ezehel Elliott. And the more I read the team leaves, like I said yesterday to you, the more I feel comfortable that z is gonna be fine, that if he falls for whatever reason

in any draft, I'm gonna pounce. I don't and I know you don't either, really feel the same way about Melvin Gordon. But it feels like I don't know that we've written him off, but it certainly feels like we're writing him off a little bit. And if that's the case, knowing how successful the running game has been with the Chargers in the years past, shouldn't we be moving Austin Ekeler and or Justin Jackson? Yeah? I mean, for me, for this, you have to history, you know, learned from history,

or be doomed to repeat it. Lavian Bell changed the NFL. I mean, no matter which way you look at it and it and it could be fear. There's could be fear talking, but the reality is, as he showed, if you hold out, you can get your money from another team. Now I believe both Ezekiel Elliott and Melvin Gordon these are different contracts situations. Levian Bellows and a much different

such situation had been franchise tagged. I think twice Um and the Pittsburgh Steelers were basically saying with their money that we're not interested in paying you. And I don't want to play for a team that doesn't want to pay me either, And I saw I'm most of the time, I'm gonna side with the players I signed with Elliott, I signed with Melvin Gordon, especially, he's one of the top ten running backs in the league and should be

paid accordingly, and he's not. And people want to get up in arms and say, all five million dollars, it's such it's a crazy amount of money. I would take it to play in the NFL. Listen, that is all relative. We're not comparing their salaries and your salaries. I'm comparing Melvin Gordon to like running backs like him, and he's he's in the bottom pay for running backs. Running Backs are getting screwed in the NFL because of you know, the Bell cow thing not really being a thing. And

I believe the two contracts situations there are different. As Sekiel Elliott needs to play this year to make it to free agency. He has to play a certain amount of games. I don't know what the amount is. I can't remember at the top of my head. Numbers are not my my strong point, but I know his situation is different. Melvin Gordon doesn't need to play. He's saying that he will hold out and he will go into free agency if they drop him, and he's not a

player for them. So it's it's a completely different situation. And the big thing for me is this San Diego does this. They've done it before. They did it with Vincent Jackson, they did it with la Damian Thomason, one of the best running backs ever. Uh So, like, look, they're they're they're for me. They're just not going to pay that. They have a track record of doing this, of holding out and and and and not showing their hand. So Gordon scares me more than Elliott. I think Elliott

will play Gordon. It's up in the air. But I mean, like players are going down there if they want to compete, they're gonna need Melvin Gordon. Yeah, and I think everything you bring up exaccurate. It's a very different situation than Lady on Mill. I technically support the players as well because their bodies on the line ultimately, and a player like Melvin Gordon realizes being on the press business free agency.

If he gets hurt now before he gets his new deal, that's over, right, Like everything's over, especially at that position. So he wants to get paid now. This is his one true chance at a big time contract, especially at that position. We've seen play. It won't absolutely not, and they're not going to pay him if he doesn't ask. Of course, this is how you ask. This is how

you ask. You don't show up. If you just go to him and say, oh, I'd like more money, and then you're showing up at practice, they know that you're not serious. They know that there's no urgency whatsoever to do it. Absolutely So, ultimately, Melvin Gordon probably in the right, and you're right, maybe he'll show up midway through the year. I forget the number as well. I want to say Vincent Jackson showed up in a week eleven. But I don't know if that's the same case here for Melvin Gordon.

But let me just talk about it from a fantasy perspective, and Melvin Gordon misses the first eight weeks, tend weeks, whatever it is, Where should we draft Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson? Um? For me, Eckler is just going way too high for for my choice. UM. I like Eckler.

I think he's a great receiving back, but he I think from my my opinion, last year he proved when Gordon went down and he was the running back, the starting running back and the Balquau guy there for the two or three weeks that he was before he got hurt. Is he proved that that that's not who he is. He's not that kind of back. He can't be effective in that kind of workload. He's more of a you know, an eight to twelve touch kind of guy. Uh, swing passes, screens,

stuff like that. That's where he's effective. Justin Jackson at the end of the year proved that maybe maybe he can be that guy. So if I'm gonna get one, it's gonna be Jackson, but it's gonna be late, because I mean, the reality is that we just don't know. They probably trust Eckler Moore because he's he's been there longer and been in the system longer. But Justin Jackson had some flashes at the end of last year when he played, and I think that's the guy to own.

So I do want to read this. Just Raven of the Action Network tweeted this out about an hour ago. In Chargers offensive coordator still offens coordinator Ken Wizzon Hunt gave danny Wood had nine and a half carries per game in the first two games before he towards a c L that would have shattered danny Wood has previous high of six point six carries per game, which took

place three years prior to that. Obviously, Ken Wizzon Hunt was the o C there then o C now um his previous high of six point six harries for game. Kenn wizzen Hunt was also the offensive coordinator then before he went to Tennessee to become the head coach for a bit. I think, and again we're just judging coaches by schemes and whatnot. Austin was going to in every opportunity to be the guy like I don't think that Wizzon Hunt cares about build and how small he is.

I think that he thinks Heckler is the better talent. He's gonna give him every shot. I know what Justin Jackson looked like down the stretch last year, but I kind of like Austin Ekeler. Yeah, I mean in his teach her own just for me Eckler. I think for me it was glaring. He showed me last year that he can't carry the ball that often. He he can't. He can't be the guy that's going to have that workload. And Justin Jackson is younger, Um, he has more size

to him. I just believe it's going to be Justin Jackson's job and Ackler's role is not going to change if Melvin Gordon doesn't play UM. But this is something that we really got a monitor for sure. Melvin Gordon, in my opinion, he's not gonna play UM. He might play this year, but it won't be until much later in the season. Uh. They did it. They held out with Bosta last year until we uh nine or ten, I can't remember what it was. So they're gonna do it again and they don't have they don't have to

pay this player. That's just the reality of it. And I think they do believe in Eckler and Jackson can get it done. Losing Allen though, they just lost James the the safety All Pro safety man. I'm I'm definitely when we get off here, I'm moving Mike Williams way way up. Their defense is going to be hindered. He might be one of the best, uh best players in the secondary in the whole NFL, and having him not there,

it's going to change their defense. And you already know how good Hunter Henry is or how much we like Hunter Henry, so that's something that's just ultimately solidifying our or love for him. Speaking of charges banged up Keenan, Allen has a been of an ankle injury. That's because potentially knocked him out for the preseason. Again, we see a sorry surgery, had surgery, and he's not going to play in the preseason at all. And I didn't really I didn't realize keen now On at surgery. I thought

it was just injured. I thought I was just reading that on Twitter during the break. I thought I had saw surgery. So God none old me to that. But that's what I just read. Very I'm look at this uping now hold on, now, I just have to know because keen now is on my guys. Let me see here, because surgery is a big and always have surgery much bigger deal to have a sprained ankle here, ankle surgery likely to miss the preseason. That comes from Field the Eights,

Oh my god, ankle surgery. Hello. Mike Williams, so schefter tweeted out that an ankle injury not keeping him serious, not this is yesterday, knock him out of the Chargers three free season games, and then field Yates tweeted less than an hour ago, ankle surgery to miss the preseason. Are we sure he comes back ready to go over a week one year? Yeah, I mean as far as I know. I mean, like like I've had a couple of surgeries in my life. Um, the truth is he

may never be the same player. Hold on, hold on, so, field Gates clarified, no surgery for Keenan Allen, surgery just getting no surgery cos we avoidered that ball, which is nice because I love Keenan Allen as a player. Um, I think maybe the best route runner in the whole of the NFL. Not fast, not not a giant body, but but a guy that I love having on my team, especially in PPR leagus Ui has always has been a black. When we come back for the last segment, I'll get into MLB for tonight, I'll give you bunch of numbers and a lack of stuff I also have in front of me. I have some information on like the wild card bets and whatnot. Um it also Coach of the Year bats which I think is really interesting. So let

me start there. So how about this. According to the Draft Kings sports book, the favorite to win Coach of the Year Freddy Kitchens. Freddy Kitchens and the Cleveland Browns is the favorite to be the coach of the Year. He is plus nine hundred. I guess to make many people expect the Browns to take the next step. Obviously, they are the favorites to win the division, and they think Freddie Kitchen will push him over the edge. I think it's very tough for a first year head coach

to do that. So plus nine hundred you got Freddie Kitchen. But on the Draft Kings sports Book, the greatest percentage of the money he's coming in on Kyle Shanahan. They think the Footy Niners will take a step forward. Kyle Shanahan. You're getting that a good number here, You're getting Shanahan plus two thousand. They had about Coach of the a lot of times it doesn't always just go to the best team. It goes to a team that surprises, that

makes a playoff, that takes the next step. If San Francisco can stay healthy, it looks like at least the majority of people putting big money down thinks that will be the San Francisco forty. So Kyle Shanahan here at plus two thousand is the number, uh is that where the most money is coming in on But the person that has the most bets coming in on him is at plus fourteen hundred, and that is Doug Peterson the Eagles, one of the supporters organizations, probably one of the best

teams in the NFL at least to start off. Coach by Doug Peterson, super Bowl winner. You get him at plus fourteen hundred. Give you some other names and numbers. Frank Reich and a lot of people are high on the Indianapolis Colts, and get Reich at plus one thousand, telve percent of the money coming in on him, nine

percent of the bets coming in on Frank Reich. You have Adam Gaze at plus twenty twelve percent of the money coming in on Adam Gaze, babe, And you got thirteen some of the bets on him, people like the Jets, people like Adam Gates who knew other names. Uh, that Depler betting on here, Matt Lafleur of the Packers plus two thousands. I don't hate that one. Packers can turn things around back and the floor can impress. Uh, Dan Quinn, you get him at plus sixteen hundred. That Patricia of

the Lines is even worse. That's plus four thousand. Bruce arians A plus sixteen hundred, I don't love that one. And my man Pat Server of the New York Giants, and get him here at plus five thousand. The stat stuff help. But stat of the day is this. Each of the Padres last five games have gone over the total of run line. Last night the total run line was over nine runs. It's just like stat. other numbers I add for you today. A lot of these baseball related, so I'll save that for a little bit later on. Let me get into the football nonsense for an We got a whole lot of preseason games tonight, Uh, including in Carolina where the Panthers will take on the Bills. It's Ron rivera uh and the Pathers taking on his protegect Sean mcdernott, Sean McDermott, Brandon Bean and the Buffalo Bills.

Bills are a one point dog away from Buffalo. Excuse me in Carolina and a lot of these times where you're seeing uh former students facing their uh, their old mentors, I usually lean lean you with the student. You heard me do that last week with Matt Patricia against Bill Belichick. Didn't work out so well that Patricia got stomped tonight. I look at it kind of similarly. I think the answer is gonna be how much if uh Cam Newton does play tonight. I don't know that he will um

if he plays. I don't expect Christian McCaffrey to play like this offense. This Carolina teams been really good. Like I like Carolina a lot this season. Buffalo with Josh Allen, I expect him to be on the run. I think he has something to prove. I really like Buffalo here at plus one. Will it be one of my best NFL bets? We'll see. We'll see. Next up. Chicago Bears are in New York at the Meadowlands taking on Eli Manning Daniel Jones and the Giants. It is expected that

Eli Manning plays about a quarter. It is expected that Daniel Jones plays about a quarter. That will be the first half. Second half will be mostly Kyle Loletta and Alex Tanney. last week, I got demolished by this Jets defense. The Bears defense a much better defense, and the Jets offense. That first team went up and down the field against the Giants defense. Expect the Bears do the same. The Barriers plus two and a half. Really like that number as well. I'm not gonna get one of my best best because I just don't want to run again the Giants, but the Bears at plus two and a half is

a fantastic number. Only other game tonight in the NFL is between the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a Battle of Florida if you will, Uh. Dolphins are at three point dog Buccaneers. they're a game behind. I don't know that they have the pitching this year. I'm not touching that. The Mets are two games behind there at plus two. Fine, you wanna betwo plus two. I'm okay, I'm okay with that. But here here's the best one. The Philadelphia Phillies or one game back. They are ahead of the New York Mets. The Mets are at plus two right the Diamondbacks or three and a half games back. They are at plus two seventy five. The Philadelphia Phillies are one game back.

After last night's dramatic walkoff grand slam by Bryce Harper, they are one game back. The Philadelphia Phillies or plus four hundred. This one's easy, folks. If you're getting the Phillies at plus four hundred, no brainer. You gotta take the Phillies of plus four hundred. Either they don't get in. Either they don't make the playoffs. Also, taking place at the seven o'clock hour, you get the Atlanta Braves taken on the Los Angeles Dodgers. And this is another really interesting game total, folks, because you have the Braves come in as a minus one twenty two favorite Canta Maana, who's been really bad in the second half. six for the game total, it's double digits. It's ten, and I think, once again that's too high. Let's make it another best batman, uh at ten? Give me the under at ten is too high of a number. You're getting both the over and the under in this total at minus one ten, so it's even money here. I like this one to go absolutely under the total of ten. So two totals two games in a row, the Cardinals and the Reds under nine, the Dodgers and the Braves,

My biggest best better than night is the San Francisco Giants tonight. Se the bets in the Draft Kings sports book coming in on the Giants. One small problem if some of the money.
