It is so. I'd already seen the pilot and you I loved it, but I just hadn't gone back to catch up. And now I was like, well, let me just answering emails, let me just pop it on in the background. Two hours later, I have to turn this off because it requires my full attention.

It's yeah, you can, but on your phone. No, you got to really pay attention.

That is not second screen viewing. I would say the from a like medical show, prosthetics and makeup are so fabulous, and there's this really good and kind of gross, but then the emotional impact it's wonderful.

You don't already realized the er couldn't have been as graphic as they are because it was a network show, whereas they show they don't hide the the gore. I mean, it's not there's moments where'ts super gory, like with that foot. But I just had that realization when I was watching it, like, wow, this is so realistic. Look and whoever's in charge of the prosthetics and the special effects makeup is just one hundred.

Yeah, yeah, I'm blown away at the way they're able to manage so many characters moving so consistently mean, And that's kind of a trope of medical TV where you have a lot of doctors and a lot of moving parts and new patients. But because this is all taking place in one day across the season, hour to hour, you're so much more invested in these folks. And it's it's just genuinely brilliant and heartbreaking and lovely and inspiring, and it's a great show. It's a wonderful TV.

Yes, do the days connect or is it just random days?

It's one day, one day for the season.

The whole season is his Yes, the whole season is his fifteen hour shift. He's he's the lead doctor on this er board in Pittsburgh, and he's got medical students and residents and interns and nurses and he oversees everything. And the waiting room is there's not a seat left in the waiting room. It's all packed. And this is like a typical fifteen hour shift and.

Fifteen episodes total.

Yeah, and it's not you know what I like about it, It's all believable. You know, went with er even though I only didn't really watch it, but it got to be like, you know, how could all of these crazy things happen? This is all intense, but I think it's completely believable in that all these things would happen in a typical fifteen hour shift in a busy.

Er because twenty four was not believable at all. I was a hYP show ever in the history. This motherfucker would get shot and then two episodes later he's fine and running, and shit, it's like, nigga, you just got shot two hours ago.

What the fuck? They better not do that on this show. That's all.

I never watched twenty four.

I feel like something big is going to happen though, Oh well, I feel like they're laying foundation for something big to occur.

I feel in the mid season.

In the mid they started off with this big revelation that this doctor's mentor passed on this day and it's been multiple years since he worked this specific day, and he's really struggling to keep his composure throughout the day. And so as that tension ramps up, you're like, is he gonna break? Is he gonna be okay? Like you're very I'm just a family.

So I got it, Okay, I just thought it might be obvious, yes, but it probably is. All right, So for anyone who works in film in New York and New York City, did you shoot in New York City that scene?

There's a guy named radio Man who I believe was the inspiration for Robin Williams in What's that movie? H help me? He's almost Come.

On, man, I like New York in June. How about you? The Fisher King.

The Fisher King, and he is a very unique individual. He is obsessed with.

Movies and he's obsessed with.

For two he shows films and he shows up to sets. He is always carrying.

A radio, a bike in a radio.

He rides a bicycle. He has a radio around his neck. People often think he's a almost person, but I believe he isn't. But he is a very interesting character anyway, if you talk to him, he knows everyone's names. He shows up on sets and a lot of directors know him. A lot of actors know him because he's on every set in New York and they give him cameos, and so he's in lots and lots of films. He's in my film Going in Style, He's he's in many, many, minut any films.

If you're confused and this doesn't making sense, just google radio Man, New York City. But when I was watching that clip of you, there's a guy that looks a lot like him holding a radio, and I said, I think that's radio Man.

So I do have an answer, and it's actually a maybe even a deeper dive trivia fact, it is not radio And it's a guy named Kirk Thatcher who he appears in a Star Trek movie as the same character he appears in my Spider Man clip. A guy as a guy holding a boombox, and he's like, I think he has something to do with the hens In company he worked with, Like, he's directed a bunch of commercials with muppets, and he was telling me on set about

Okay, that's bizarre, but and whoever cast him definitely said showed him a picture of radio man and said be like this because that's uh, that's who radio man is. But what that must have been crazy? But I just watched your segment on Colbert. We were very funny going to Comic Con. Was that How did that call about? And were you surprised when that when that little clip went so viral?

There are so many actors like yourself who want to crack the code, and.

I have no idea. I was shocked.

I mean, it was like really exciting to get to do that, that tiny little thing. But then it has been surprising a the level of response I got and be the staying power where I still get people who will yell do a flip to me, just like randomly. The Colbert thing came about also sort of randomly where I was performing at the UCB Theater in New York at the time. And I think that Colbert writers just

Well, we're the perfect person because of your UCB background. I thought you were. You were riffing with all those people and you were so funny. I mean, I was like, I want to see more segments of this, like I'd watch more of this Man on the street.

They definitely wanted someone who had like an improvved background for it.

But your character now has its own, Like there are people who are creating your character's own backstory.

And stuff like that, like you know what I mean, Like you could connect it to Shang Chi also, you know what I mean?

Like, how did how did it come about that you you got cast by uh, you know, Ben Stiller for this incredible show.

For that, I sent him a tape and I think Ben had maybe seen I think he had seen I'm in one episode of Succession, like sort of very briefly, and I think he had seen and had seen some

And then.

And then our show has historically long processes, where the first season we were about to go into production, and then COVID happened, and then our second season was interrupted by the strikes and everything. But so after auditioning, it took quite a while to actually to get in there and get started. But as soon as we did, it was like, Oh, I think we're making something really cool and weird.

Did you well, it's funny. I'm a funny story. I was sent the pilot to read audition for the part that Adam got, and it is incredible at and is so so brilliant in but I didn't really understand it. I remember reading it and being like, I don't know if I could do this because I don't really know what's happening. When you when you first read it, were you like what it's very hard to describe what the show is.

It is very hard to describe. I like pretty quickly liked it and was like, Ooh, I think this is my kind of show, Like, I think this is something

Yeah, you guys have incredible chemistry. I mean, the four of you together, and and I feel like you do have a lot of the laughs. I feel like you're kind of like the comic relief to everybody else's straight men.

Yeah, I think I think, uh, we do have a really fun chemistry and dynamic and a lot of that I do think came from the like unusual circumstances of the first season of We were like one of the first shows back when COVID happened, So it was this very weird time of like, you know, you were in masks and you also had these face shields that you weren't under the netch like a dog, you know those

So, yeah, you don't see the crew at all.

Yeah, at all.

It was.

It was very strange, But I do think that kind of helped accelerate our sort of comfort level and like intimacy because it was it was really weird. But it's also such a great group that, uh, I think it's like that also makes it easy. It's such a great group of performers and also people. Everyone is like really fun to be around, and it's great. It's my I'm so lucky.

Zach, do you remember the COVID times when you were working on sets and didn't know what Like you could run into people from work at a bar and not know who the fuck they were because they had masks on all the time. Do you remember that, Like, I'm just I'm sure. I'm sure Zach Braft too, I'm sure you both remember this time.

I remember directing something right in the beginning of COVID where they that where everyone had the yeah, like Zach saying, not only have a mask, but have a shield, and then only the actor could. I mean, what a surreal crazy time.

Now it was nutty time, bro. And did you guys have to stop in the middle of shooting till.

The people get COVID when you were shooting.

Uh, I don't think we had any like full on shutdowns we got. We got pretty lucky. But like you were saying, I do remember not only not recognizing people, but when you did finally see their face, you I would have invented a whole different face under their masks, just like yes, and that's what I thought they looked like. And then they take their mask off and you'd be like, oh, okay, you're not way off. Yeah, you're not a person who I've been having conversations with.

Yeah, I remember I had a first a d I was working with for a long time, and I just never saw the bottom I did, never saw anything but his eyes. And then I saw him without his mask. I was like, oh, that's not that was not my guest, No, nothing.

Surprise mustache has shown up and yeah, I.

Want to ask you about this set. Is the set for this show enormous, because if it's not, they sure do make it seem endless and enormous.

And is it an homage to THX that I don't know. That would be a question for Dan and Ben. It is pretty enormous. Like the hallways, there are a lot of hallways, even more even more this season than last season. But it's also it's like a labyrinth where all the hallways.

Can't find how they put that all together. Because I want to point the audience to the opening shot of season two, which if you just watching the show, you might go, wow, that's cool, but go watch a video on YouTube about how they executed it. I mean, it just it's hard to describe vibe what they did. And I saw it. I was so interested because I'm a film geek. I saw an interview with Ben and talking about how they shot this opening shot over the course

And it's just a shot where his face kind of shakes hand and then he starts running through the hallways and stuff like that.

Fuck, And I will say, while we were shooting the season, I don't think I really knew that they were shooting that over the course of so many months. So there were days where I would just come in and Adam would be running on a treadmill and I like, what is what is happening here? I did not know that they were like working all on that one that one shot.

Basically, it's so I mean, the show is beautifully photographed, every like the framing and Ben Ben and your dps. Does Ben direct every episode or noo uh?

He directs. He directed five of the ten in season two and I think six of the nine in season one, so he directs about half quite a bit.

Well everyone, everyone, uh, everyone creating the look in addition to the wonderful actors, but the look, the way it shot, the cinematography, and just just really cool, unique choices, and anyone who's interested in film, first of all, watched Severance, but also check out that shot because it it's just kind of like groundbreaking. I thought in how you can hide stitches in these days and make it look make things look like the camera never cut. I mean, it's just really really cool.

I mean a lot of them. I love I love Meet to Parents, I love Tropic Thunder. I also I low key, even though I'm like a little too old for this, I love The Night at the Museum movies like they they came out when I was already, Like, you know, this isn't for me necessarily, but the scenes with him and that little monkey are are particular favorites for me.

I have two movies that I love of his, and not a lot of people say these movies. One is Flirting with Disaster, which I think is fucking a phenomenal movie. And then he directed a movie with him Winona Ryder, Oh my god, how I forget Ethan Hawk? Janine Garofalo Reality Bites, Reality Bites, Oh, that's one of my favorites of his from back in the day. And then the Cable Guy also, man, like, holy shit, dude, who knew.

Yeah, I mean, it was definitely like exciting, and he's someone who I would say, you know, comedically, has had a big impact on me. You know, like I watched all of his stuff coming up as I was kind of like figuring out what I thought was funny. So it was very like pressure isn't the exact word, but

As as when you put it like that, it's like, here's a guy who's, you know, one of the most successful comic actor directors alive, and he chose you to be the comic relief of the show.

Yeah, I mean it's like, so I feel so lucky on this show because John and Ben and Adam all have such a history of of comedic chops but also you know, other things. So it's been really cool to kind of like, uh, I don't know if I I don't know if they have taken me under their wing, but I've put myself under their wing.

You're like, he definitely remembers being on it, because I think him and Tony Shaloubar are close, but he does not care about it as much as I do.

I think definitely in some ways, in the sense that, like you know, his character, there's like a gentleness about him. And I do think that John has that that gentleness, which which I don't. You know, a lot of his roles are not that gentle. A lot of his roles are, you know, sort of very different than that. But but I do think that part of him is is for sure in there.
