The market closed on higher Wednesday as investor interest in the bellwether electronics and financial sectors resumed .. … and the main board reversed an initial downturn, as investors remained upbeat about the local semiconductor sector and continued to increase their holdings, in particular in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Kinmen pork barred from rest of Taiwan amid African swine fever scare The Ministry of Agriculture has banned shipments of pork and pork products from Kinmen from entering any other parts of Taiwan after a pig carcass found on a beach last week tested positive for African swine fever. The ban currently runs until next Monday. The ministry says it implemented the measures after it identified (識別, 確定) the virus found in the dead pig as matching a strain currently spreading in China. The pig carcass was spotted by the Coast Guard Administration last Saturday in the northwestern part of Kinmen's main island. Local animal disease control personnel took samples from the carcass before it was incinerated and officials say the surrounding area has been disinfected. Scandal-hit Vietnam beauty queen dropped as Taiwan tourism ambassador The Tourism Administration has announced that it terminated its contracts with a Vietnamese beauty pageant queen immediately after she was accused of fraud. Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien won Miss Vietnam in 2018 and Miss Grand International in 2021. She was invited to serve as a tourism ambassador by the administration in 2024 to to help boost interest in Taiwan as a travel destination for Vietnamese people. However, she was accused of promoting a counterfeit (偽造) fiber supplement by Vietnamese authorities in April and was arrested for consumer fraud a month later. Rights Group Reports Israeli Strikes Kill Over 600 in Iran A human rights group says Israeli strikes on Iran have killed at least 639 people and wounded over 1-thousand-300 others. The Washington-based group Human Rights Activists offered the figures, which covers the entirety of Iran. It said Thursday it identified over 260 civilians and 150 security force personnel among the dead. Iran has not been given regular death tolls during the conflict and has minimized (最小化) casualties in the past. It has not updated its figures since Monday. US Donald Trump says he “may” or “may not” strike Iran Donald Trump says he "may" or "may not" instruct the US military to strike Iran, as the situation also exposes (使曝光) divisions within his party and among his supporters. Peru Mummy Discovered Utility workers excavating trenches to expand the network of natural gas pipelines in Peru’s capital have uncovered a pre-Inca mummy approximately 1,000 years old, barely half a meter from the surface. The mummy had gone unnoticed (未被注意到的) despite urban development in a district of Lima where former agricultural and livestock fields have been converted into working-class neighborhoods over the past decades. An archaeologist working on the site says the unearthed mummy was found in a seated position. It was covered by a bundle, and still has dark brown hair. Officials believe the mummy would have belonged to a society of fishermen of the Chancay culture, which flourished between 1,000 and 1,470 AD. That was the I.C.R.T.
