Playoffs are as we mentioned yesterday, the playoffs underway, and the Tampa Bay Rays are out already. I mean they're they're I mean the playoffs are still warming
up and they're gone. These are best two out of three series. The Rays were at home taking on the Rangers. The Rangers smacked them twice in a row. Sure, yeah, and so they're up the Blue the Razor out game two of the of another series. The Twins leaded one zip and they're they're winning to nothing. They they won the first game, yessay, so they can they can move on to the divisional series. Surprised about your diamond back, I was, I was, are you like very excited.
I am, I'm homely, I'm part of my breaking news today. Okay, how much of okay, how much of a Diamondbacks fan are you? Like? Are you like bleed the whole thing? Yeah? You don't even know how color to bleed there, you know, if you bleed purple, we're supposed to bleed red. I grew up with it purple, like young young when we just won the World Series. Those are the best uniforms we've ever seen, the best uniform with the shorts, purple sleeves. We love
that. When we bring those back, it's we bring them back every once in a while, and they're fantastic. But I would say I'm a I'm a diehard. So you were born as a Diamondback fan? Yeah? The last playoff game the Diamondbacks one I was at, Yeah, the wild Card when Archie Bradley hit the triple. I was at that game with my dad and brother, and then we got swept by the Dodgers next, of course, but hey, I think it should be I think if we win tonight,
this is a big game for the Diamondbacks. We win tonight, then we can have Merroel Kelly pitch Game one against the Dodgers, and the Dodgers, you know, aren't the same. They're not that. No. I mean, I fully expect them to at least get to the National League Championship Series, all right, But I don't know how they get past the Braves. I don't know how anybody gets past exactly, I think Vegas or even
just the eye test lineup. Wise, they should be the favorite to win the World Series this year, and it shouldn't even be close in the opinion, right, But it's kind of the Arizona Diamonbacks and Dodgers are kind of this big brother little brother thing, and the Diamondbacks have been the little brother for their existence against the Dodgers more. But that's I mean, that's okay because the Dodge has been around for sure a thousand years. But yeah,
but cool, Well, look, you grew up a Diamondbacks fan. Appreciate the fact that you know, you stay, you stay true to them, and then up and take your ass kick. Didn't That's and that's that's the that's the epitome of Arizona sports. You love them, you love them just like just like the Sons. And then they tell you championship and then the Bucks just crush you. Yeah, they do. You're the Cardinals fan and you go to the Rams and they crush you, and you just just you
just know it's coming, but you don't know necessarily win. And when it is, then it's expected. Yeah yeah, so all right, okay, well cool, so no good, we'll see you know. I I'd love to see it. Well, the Diamonbacks win, that's they'll play. I mean, that's the brackets set up for that. That'll be. My sister's a huge Diamondbacks fan. Okay, but that was just because she likes Steve Finley's but for a long time, Stephen Lee a great baseball player too.
And what's funny is Craig Counsel, the manager for the Brewers, who the Dbacks are playing, is it somewhat of a Diamondback icon. He has the really weird batting stance and all those Diamondback fans know exactly. Yeah, it's it's a picture, and so it's, uh, it's funny that his old team is giving it to him. Right now. Yeah, that game will start at the top of the hour, so we'll give some updates a second.
All right, sounds good, okay, Steve, I almost crying with you guys talking about Steve was a Red fan for a while for a while, and I'm not a sports that anymore. He's not a he has he's not a fan of any teams anymore. No teams. I like my Sundays. I like to sleep Monday morning. I don't have to worry about who won, who lost. That's unbelievable. I just don't doesn't doesn't. I've been in this business a long time, like a long time. I've been
jaded totally. And guess what you're supposed to do as a journalist focus keep it for I didn't go to you of a I don't have any you know, I will against you. If they win, they win, if they lose, they lose. I have no I don't care. It's one of the reasons he got out of it. He got out of it, right, Yes, because I wanted to be a fan. I wanted to be a fan of teams, you know, I see that's that's I don't know what Steve has been doing this so long. He's like a big turtle with
a shell that you can't penetrate. He's just like, I'm just gonna be this big nothing fan of he likes sports, okay obviously because he does what he does, but he's not a fan of any sports. I think in today you can rebuttal all all you want on this, but I think more and more you're obviously you're not allowed or shouldn't be a fan when you're a
sports journalist. But I think you see more and more people are adopting that, whether that's all the guys, the other guys that we deal with on a daily basis, you know, the the Mike Luke's and the Shears and the Peterson's and all those guys, they're all fans. We I sat next to if you grew and there were the kids going to school, it was like it was like, oh, I'm like, guys, you're not supposed
to be doing that. And I didn't say anything. You can see who am I I don't care what they do, but it's it doesn't one look good and it's not part of the profession. You know what I'm saying. You're just not supposed to. And I'm one hundred years old, so you know, what does it matter to me for you? I get it. You're a student, you can have but eventually, yeah, when you're when you're fifty five or whatever, You're gonna see that, Rivera. He was
pretty accurate. You know, I could give a crap if I go to the game today, you know. Yeah, I think it's one thing to be a fan of a team and express that in your work, as opposed to they won't allow it, exactly as you used to you you weren't allowed to do that. Yeah, and I think you see, I mean, I'm a ESPN watcher, I'm a Fox all all this time and the other And I think the guys that do that, they do a good job of
letting people know who they root for outside of work, right. I think that's one thing, you know, and you can do that, you know, like like you know, you see these guys like Scott Van Pelt and Steve they've all got their favorite team, right, But when you see them on the job, when Van Pelt is doing Sports Center or you know, when whoever, you know, when they're doing their show or whatever that is, they have to keep that out of it. And the good ones do
yes, right. You know, Mike Greenberg famously, you know a Jets fan. Uh, I think he's a greene is. I know he's a Jets fan. I don't know who's who he's a fan of in baseball. It wasn't New York. It's either the Mets or the Yeah, but you know, but he's a he's a huge Jets fan, and so he would, you know, openly say that. But you know, as a as a uh an anchor or whatever, you didn't know that, right, And
that was the thing, you know. I mean, I was a huge Arizona fan when I was covering Arizona basketball Arizona football, but I worked hard and it was hard for me to do that to keep that out of it, right. I mean, I was excited as all hell when Arizona got to the Final four and eighty eight. I mean I really partly because I really wanted to cover Final four, but I was excited for the school. But when I wrote the story, I had to be work real hard to
not to not let that jump into it. And for me, I don't have to work hard. Yeah, he just doesn't deal with it because it's one thing for you and I to sit here and talk about the game on Saturday and say how we think Arizona might have a chance. But that's just because we're just a little right, We get to do that in exactly and that's part of That's why I tried. That's show. I bring it back to reality. By the way, Steve around the table today, the whole
bunch of us Arizona's got a shot a butcher. You would you have Margarita's for lunch, No chilcohol at the table at all. A bunch of bias you of a fans sitting at lunch talking about the game. I'll bet them to fourteen points. They all said I was stupid for fourteen I gave him. Well, because then you're on the show saying how I think Arizona can win the game. he said no, he came in more positive than that. I really think that they have a good chance to win this game. Will they? I'm not sure, he said, but I think they have a good Okay, I'll give you four I'll give you guess that. I think they have a better chance than they had against Washington, So I'll giveing him fourteen points. I think it's tough because it's going to be in California, being home against Washingington. I do think you get a couple more points. Yeah, like
against the spread, I guess. But the it's the over should be said at like seventy points because nobody's gonna be able to stop anybody. Well see, And that's the thing I disagree with that. I think Arizona will be I think Arizona will be able to keep Caleb USC under forty and then under forty. Arizona's not scoring thirty. Dude, we could get eleven guys together and score forty against USC. No, he could. USC would give up
forty in our in our Turkey Bowl. Absolutely. And that's why I say Arizona's got a shot is because they are going to be able to score. They're gonna come out, They're gonna score. Look, and I think we talked about I know, we gotta go talk about this a little bit. I think the fact that Jadene de Laura spent last game on the sidelines, if he plays this week, I expect to see a better version of him than we've been seeing all season long. Yeah, So you know, if you remember last year at lightning delays and people that will leave the stadium and it was crazy. So uh, the
weather looks great. Uh. You know, Chip Hale's excited. Uh. You know Breck Gleason, who you guys know, is Ke's sending me credential requests because people want to come out here. Uh. And you know, I think you know, Thursday of the four days, Thursday is the smallest, Okay. So if anybody's listening and be worried about tickets, don't worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow, you'll be fine. We'll probably have three four thousand
people, okay. Uh, and then and then it builds. So Friday we have in the release, I said, we now have added fireworks, which we've never done. That's gonna be between games as a doubleheader. On Friday, we also have Advantage West Family special at the branches. Uh. And then Ammalcio overgone. I mean that's that's the rivalry. Yeah, so they're back back on Friday and Saturday. Saturday is is just a great day
and it's you know, we'll have five six thousand people. Uh, and it's because of the rivalry and because people come up from Mexico, right. Uh, so that works out really well. And then Sunday, unfortunately, you guys have heard me talk about Labresia too much. H. Well, they're not coming. Well. Uh, there was some work visa issues and so we didn't have them in Masa last Sunday either. But the band that came in Contacto Norte. There was nobody complaining about not having Lebresa because I
guess this band has played at Chase Field on Hispanic Heritage Day. They're a huge band out of Sonora, out of airmo Ceo, and they're more of a younger crowd. Uh, you know, old farts like me. Uh probably like Lebrisa a little better. But we've also had Labresa four straight years. So people are ready for a change, and we believe that this band is going to really present a great product. So Jay, I might have asked you this before. Have you been to these things? Yeah? I
had my first one that I went to. I was saying this, this is what they do. Yeah, it's a party. It's a blast. It's a party in the look and I will tell you nothing like a shameless plug, but launching Gatta from downtown, it's handling our music. And if you look at the release, you guys, I should have it. We're bringing in a lot more bands this year for during the week. Uh. And and I think that's there's a band on Saturday that I can't remember their
name, but they're supposed to be really good as well. Uh. And that you said it, I mean that's part of who we are. Uh. It's it's the it's the music, it's the food, it's the it's the atmosphere. Uh. The music we play in the press box is played the same it's the music that they play at the games in airmo Ceo. It's the same guy that plays it up there plays it here. The PA announcer from aermo Ceo is the PA announcer here. So the most important thing
for us is that it's toughetic. But well, when you this is your twelfth Daniels. So when you guys, when you say you've been here twelve years, I mean it's a tradition. Now, it's a you can even call it a classic, right, I mean, you guys are here every year. It's something that is uh, it's exciting. You know a lot of fans get out to it. And then like I said, it's the
food, man, I'm there for the food. I know that. But I could see that looking at you, just something like but you guys, you know, you guys have been doing this, but not only doing it for a long time, but doing it well so that people keep coming. Oh thank you, and I appreciate that, and that it is a tradition. I mean it's probably the largest Hispanic sporting event in the calendar year. Yeah. Uh you know, so that's a statement. Yeah, I mean,
you know people could say SC two sign, Well they don't. It's not the same as as the amount of people we draw for our four days, right. You know, we hope, we hope they do well, but it's just you know, people look forward to it I mean, and they so many people, and you guys have both been here. There's people that don't even sit in their seats, that just hang out in the concourse, talk to their friends, listen to music and dance. You know what,
if that's what they want to do, that's fine with me. You know, you mentioned this thing with the band, any any other new challenges this year or things that you tried to do different you know, based on you know, feedback and stuff like that. I mean, what you know, or do you just kind of have a formula that you go with. We know we have a formula, but there's always challenges. I mean, it's you know, dealing with the venue. It's just sometimes a challenge,
right. Uh, you know, it's just but you know, we we've the ticketing thing we've got handled pretty well. The concessions I think are good. The sponsorships are good. You know, right now we're actually in the concourse looking where the concourse booths are going, you know, and people, you know, people respond very well to that. But I think the change of our big act on the Tuesday before the the start probably is insanity. Uh but but if anything, it probably gets us more publicity. Yeah,
I don't think you've talked about the UA. They play tomorrow night, right more night, tomorrow night. How big of a deal is that to Chip into the uh maybe the locals. Well, it's a big deal to Chip. I've heard Chip will have practices preceding this where he plays the music really loud and he plays Hispanic music, Uh, just just to get his players used to it. So so that's always nice. But Ship Ship knows the value of this because his players get to play against older professionals. Uh,
you know, some guys that have been around a little. But but the real difference is a college player throws harder and runs faster. Uh, That's that's the one thing. But yet the Mexican teams have had success playing against the u of A. Yeah, so it's I mean, Schip knows that this is a great step. You know, he wants his young players exposed to something different in kind of a raucous area, and we achieved that. You know, Chip told me that he's got he's got some young position players,
but he's got some veteran pitching. So and we we actually play nine innings instead of seven, just to allow they and Aermalcio to run extra countries out there. So tell us a little bit about the teams, the Mexican teams that have coming here, because you mentioned em and nobody going are being a are you know, big rivals. Tell us educate us a little bit about these teams that are coming down here, how they do in their leagues. You know, they're kind of their status down there. You know,
what are we going to see from some of these teams. Well, you're gonna see great baseball. I mean, this is spring training. Always keep that in mind. They're just just like we have spring training in the States. They're just four in their teams, and they want to they want to give different people different opportunities. AMI, looks really good. They've got,
uh they've got some good uh players coming from the States. You know, Alfonso Rivas, he's actually going to join h the Ammill Seal team on Sunday. Uh. And he's been in the Big league's a good portion of this season. UH. And so there's there's a number of guys that former big leaguers, current Triple A players with some major league time. I mean, each Conn Karates, you know, third base of the Tampa Bay still plays in this league. UH. And you know, and so there's there's a
number of guys like that. Because he's from Mexico. I will tell you that the team that you follow, one of the pitchers that was on that team this year that's from Mexico will not be playing here. Okay, do you want to do you want to reveal who that is? Had to be the picture with the glasses, Oh you're eus. Yeah, I'm mad from Mexico. I know I'm mad at him. You even forgot who he was? Yeah, yeah, he's out of my mind already. He's gone.
He's he's yesterday. And well he showed me because you're not going to see him in Dodger Blue for a long time ever. I don't think we'll ever see him in Dodger Blue again. So did you, by the way, not to change the subject, did you see Trevor Bauers what he said, yes, about how it was all it was? He was set up and well and now today you're getting people coming back and saying that Trevor Browers just
flat out line. Well, there's a second court situation. Yeah, so so you know I would take I would take the side of the people that say he's lying. Yeah. Uh, the largest cigar company in Mexico was at Charles Stake, and we had the pitcher who was the either first or second best picture in this league.
