Streaming live on the iHeartRadio WAPP. This is I on the Ball with Steve Robera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Hey, welcome back to Winning the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve, You're Sammy, and I hope you have breaking news. This is an Eye on the Ball breaking news. You have some breaking news. You have a dB or now you have a dB TA. Carrio Davis is back. He entered the transfer portal, a lot of speculation about maybe him following coach Fish Washington with
a couple other guys, but nonetheless he's back. And now he's the fourth starter back in the in the secondary with Maldonado and two other guys. So the secondary is strong, breaking better look strong, so the defense will be good. Great, great gift. I mean, we're at a time where coaches have to re recruit their players. It's it's not not sure that Nil had something to do with it. Isn't that the funny thing that someone gets somebody from somewhere else and you say, well, you got getting paid more
money. Yeah, and now you got to pay money to keep them. Yeah. God forbid the culture. The coach the other players have something to do with it. It's well you listen to Tom Tom talking about the nil Well collective, right, Okay, So Sammy, Sammy, you're about twenty four ish. The thirty year old Sammy has a love for this university and sports. I'm getting you're getting a call right now from one of the boosters. Hey, Sammy, how are you? And I know that you graduated
in twenty twenty four. I see you're doing well. I see your name out there on bubbah. Could you help us out? We're trying to keep our players happy. That's a it's an interesting phone call. I think I would hope by the time I have enough money to donate back to you. Of A, there's some maybe restriction is the wrong word, but more see how rails to get that not only I've come to understand a little bit more,
but the players, the universities. But if it if it's still the same, say I were, say I were able to donate today, it would be really hard for me to a know where my money's gonna go. Hmm. I think that's a number one thing. Yeah, because at the end of the day, sure like I want nothing more to see the U of a athletics be successful. As someone that hasn't seen the national championship here in his time here, and as an alum will still be indebted to watching
basketball games, football games, baseball whatever. I would love to be able to support that in any way, but it's hard to. If the phone call is hey, mister Sebolka, we'd love to have you enter our pool of name, image and likeness money. And then if if my question next question is okay, well where's this going to? And if the answer is, oh, well, we're diving it among diving it among players, and that's not the answer that you you want to look, what's the answer.
I mean it would depend. I think as someone that is extremely passionate and basketball is his favorite sport and that really enjoys golf, and hopefully I have a successful enough career, I think putting it to places where you're passionate about it is important. Well, you'd have that good basketball collective that would call you, yeah, okay, put it there. You know, the thing
about it is how we talk about with Jay all the time. You have the university that wants money, You get this U athletic departner that needs money, or both of these do. And then you have the NIL. Football, basketball, softball, women's basketball. All need money, right, And
that's that's a five finger add right there where everybody needs money. It's I just actually want part of my One of my finals was a was a thesis about a topic kind of your choosing, and I decided to write about NIL and it's it's legality of it all, and so kind of like who'd you
talk to? H it was it's a research paper. So a lot of Supreme Court cases in terms of publicity, privacy and like misappropriation and in a world where there's so much there's so much media, and especially now with the NIL of Okay, if if I'm Caleb Williams and I post something on Instagram, can my can my boosters use that? Or if I'm sponsored by like raising Canes, can can they go post that? So it's it's a really interesting proprietary right and it really raised kind of a question of and we can
talk about it here but and maybe there's already an answer. But I know for the NFL, NBA, they the media rights, so like ABC, NBC players get some money from that the media rights. Do do college athletes get some of the media rights if if they're gonna they're gonna broadcast their game on ESPN, does that media rights money go strictly to each school or what does that look like? So what did you come up with? You're done with your paper? So did you get I mean I got an A.
But I mean that's just from the research. That's just from the research. I mean A. The main conclusion that I was able to was able to come up with that it truly is the wild West of I would love to see words fifteen pages. I could have told you that in two paragraphs. No, no, no doubt. But it's it's how we got there. It's how you get there which is important. But I did my presentation on it. It's like I would love to say, in five years, this
could change, but right now there's no indication that it's going. I think that's the number one thing people have. If I give the money, who is it going to? And who is it going to? And that's normal, that's all you want to that's fair. But that's when you do your due diligence in you right, Sure, Okay, let's move on. We'll move on to the NBA. There's some great games last night. Well did you No, let's talk about your neck of the woods right here, Well,
saw isvog gonna be fire? There's no, there's no official reports about that. Personally, I think he'll be back, because how can he be back? The only reason I think he'll be We're there, No, you're good. I think the only reason that I think he'll be back is when you look at the histories of quote, super teams or stars coming together more often than not, the success rate in year one is in terms of winning a championship is very little. You have the when Durant went and joined the
Warriors, they won championship. But other than that, like the Lebron d Wade Bosh heat team, did they get to the finals? They lost. They lost in the finals, but granted it's levels here the Suns lost in the first round of the playoffs, but nonetheless it's I think year two is is the year where God, I don't think they can go to another year of this because because their impression of the coach, the big three, the egos and all that, they don't think he's capable of leading him to the
to the finals. Well that's not I mean, I mean, you listen to Bradley Beal talk about it. He gives his praises to Vogel. I think the only report that came out was that Durant was somewhat unhappy in his offensive role under coach Frank bog That's the only one that I've seen. Okay. I saw something this morning that it's likely that they're gonna let him go. Okay, See, I saw, I saw that they were thinking about it, but nothing has been But then my question is as a Suns fan,
like who are you gonna hire? Well, that's the whole thing, that's always the question. It's like here, here's the problem with the NBA. It's incestuous. You gotta get fired one place. You're in your head, candidate for the death place, and you know it's a place where you get fired to go somewhere else. And and what level do you level off at? Sure? I saw uh. I could see Mike Budenholzer, Uh, the ex coach of the Bucks, and he's he's got Arizona connections.
Yeah, well he he was the coach that beat us in the finals when the Bucks won it, So that'd be an interesting dynamic. But I don't know. I think the team's gonna run it back. There's not gonna be unless we fire coach Vogel. There's not a lot of significant changes that can really happen. And so I think the biggest takeaway from what's gonna happen moving forward is just hope that this team can build a chemistry that by by next year it can be it can be a well OED's tough. And I say
this because, uh, there was no chemistry now. Uh. And then their bench with with even with the big guys, their bench was horrible, right, Uh, maybe not horrible, but just about horrible. And once you and I know I used marriage analogies, once you got to go to the to the counselor's office to go see counseling, it's over. By that time, I don't know anybody who's going to CalCon and it is successful. I don't know anybody. Yeah, to be fair, I think everyone.
I mean, it's mainstream media, that's what they have to talk about after a team like this gets swept. But it's also as a fan that is very indebted to that team taking a step back and a realizing, Okay, Durant, Booker and Beale, this team's going to be successful one way or another. It's going to quote contend Beial Durant Booker played less than half the season together this year, and we looked good going into the playoffs. We ran into a bus side which is Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert and Cat.
And don't get me wrong, we were not the better team. But I do think there just needs to be some form of continuity with the franchise, and I don't think that's I don't think that starts with firing Frank Vogel, even though I do would love to see some some changes in terms of the way we run our offense and the way we were in our team, But to fire the man that runs the ship isn't a good start in terms of building that continuity. It's funny because I saw that this morning in terms of
there was the that was their leaning to doing that. I don't see that anymore. Yeah, which is, you know, kind of strange, sure, but yeah, the Suns, the Sun's discussions, it's still it's still a little still a little tender. But the Nicks and seventy six ers are going to a game six. I don't know if you saw that, Tyrese MAXI had yeah, seven points in seventeen seconds last night. I didn't see
the game. I heard about it. Fantastic. It was giving very Reggie Miller in the garden vibes when he had his oh man thirteen points in thirty seconds. I think, mm hmm. So anyway, that's going back to Philly for Game six. The Bucks forced the Game six with Giannis and Damian Lillard both sidelined for injury. Patrick Beverly, Bobby Portis, Chris Middleton stepped up and there's again rumors Giannis might be healthy for a Game six, which
could change a lot of different things. Evan Mobley and the Calves survived last night. Evan Mobley a game saving block on Franz Wagner. They won by one. The Celtics will probably close out the Heat tonight and they'll win that series for one if they can take care of business. And the one of the best series is the MAVs and the Clippers. They play Game five tonight in La assuming for the Clippers no Kawhi Leonard, so it will again be
the Paul George and James Harden Show. And then the last thing that I have we already touched on the b game. The last thing, and we were talking about it before the show, is the Kentucky Derbys this weekend. Right, this is my last time to talk to you about it. And I know you have some horse background or you enjoy it, and I think people know if I enjoy it a lot. I haven't looked at it yet,
but I told you who I leaning towards. You're leaning Sierra Leon the second choice, second choice only because I heard his name and looked at him a few months back. Okay, and he's not the point leader in terms of that, but your guy, I don't. I don't have a guy right now. But in listening to some stuff today, his name is Fierceness with John Velasquez and Todd Pletcher is the the owner there. He's the odds on favor him and Bafford No Bafford horses for the third straight year. I
was looking at he has some horses too. He has some he just can't put. Some guys want to tell you. One of the owners sued I'm trying to sue Churchill and it didn't work. Yeah, no it didn't. But uh, we were talking about it earlier, and from everything that I've heard is that if the if Fierceness runs his best race, assume every horse in this race runs its best race. Fierceness wins by eight for long So, wow, look at you. I'm not gonna bet him. I I
don't think I'm going to. I think I'm gonna bet him straight up. But I'm not going to include him in the exact as really because this is this is my thinking of if he wins, if he runs the Great Race, I think he runs away with it. But oh, if he's not winning it, he's not winning. If he's not if he's not winning it, he might finish. Okay, Okay, that makes sense. That's that's
where I'm at. That's where my head's at right now. The other horse I do really like is Catching Freedom with Flabby and Pratt Brad Coxey owner eight to one. Right now, those might go up and we we might see some rain. And if that's the case, Mystic Dan runs really well in the rain. And those are the four horses that will bore you with right now. But Steve's on right now, I'm on, and we have a
minute left. He is a he's a closer. He is the Trevor Hoffman right there, which means that he needs a pace to get at first of all, and he needs to be in in uh in good, in a good area outside outside of the of the traffic takes to mow him down, right, and he needs a good break is what they call it. A lot of these horses, that's what the well, your horse needs a good
break to my horse doesn't need. Yeah. So, and it's so seventeen eighteen horses, I guess, But I guess there a couple of scratched moved in another way scratch. So we'll see if they hold, if they have some more mud they could more could be scratched. I love it. It's the the race for the roses, right, two minutes, two minutes of fun. It's the first time I'll be in this town to to bet it. I'd go usually go to Miamire in Vegas. So I'm here in town. You be No, that's my buck, that's my last. It's but
that and the breeders. I've been to the breeders. Oh yeah, I hate you. Maybe D will get me. We might have D tomorrow. She she's handed camping horses now for for u Fandley doing doing self forfit. Yeah. We talked about it, but readers. Stephen delmar, Oh, I know, I got to get there. The tickets are fifteen hundred two thousand dollars cheaper when I went, I bought mine for Were you two years old? No? Maybe? Just well they get deal. Well guess what
you got to go search for tickets for you? All right, it sounds good, Okay, we got to go. We're going to talk to Vincent Smith, former U a football player back in the day. He was at the scrimmage. Wow
Just Surgery. I on the Ball. Hey, welcome back to Ian the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. He's Vincent Smith, former U of a football player back in the day. Vince, how are you wonderful? How you doing? We're doing fine. Thank you. Good to hear your voice. It's been a while absolutely likewise likewise you know, so I'm right right, No, I know it's been there. There
was thirty thirty four years since well thirty years that you played here. Sorry, sorry, all right, I'd about that way, but you know, thanks, thank you for little mud. I know, because it goes by fast. But it's you know, does sort of age you and me at the same time. You you were here this weekend, you came by to see the guys. When you when did you come by to see the team, the guys, everything, everything, you know. I just wanted to see, you know, what was going on. I hadn't been down there,
and uh, I hadn't seen anything. Well, I went to the automobile, but other than going to the bowl game, I hadn't seen I hadn't seen anything live and quite some time, and so I just wanted to get down there and see I kept missing the spring game, and you know, I just want to kick up with some friends. A lot of people maybe committed to come down. So I want to make sure you know that was a part of it, right, What were your impressions? You know,
I like the energy that's going on right now. Of course, we you know, we had a tough transition moving from you know, one one regime into another one. I like the Iphroud game from the guys. I like the bounce around the energy of the guys. So and so you know, it just left me with a very good feeling about you know, what's got the transpire there in the future, moving forward, right right? Were you part of the group, the big group of former players who were in
on the fish higher after he was hired. You know, they had a lot of a lot of the alumbs on Zoom and all that part of that. No, I wasn't. I didn't. I didn't chime in on it initially. I just did, you know what I did say on social media would pay. Give's got some some time, you know, be patient with it. You know, let's see what happened. You know, you know, we never a fan as a fan base and alone whatever as a supporter.
You never make a slam dunk, you know, hire or did the slam dug on the wish list and things like that because everybody's saying something different, so you know, and that was my you know, my big thing was just you know, you know, have some patience and let's see what
happens. And at the end it turned out pretty good, and you know, you know, and then moving forward, you know, some things happened that maybe we weren't so pleased about, but you know, here we are today right right, you must be at least pleased that he moved the program in a better direction and now Brennan has a chance to continue that. Absolutely.
You know, as a as a coach myself, you know, I would love to take over a situation that you know, the coach Brendan's taking taking over right now as opposed to know what you know, coach Fish had to take over when he first came. Yeah, no question. So are you still coaching? Uh? Yeah, yeah I am. Where can you say where I'm in Inglewood right now? I'm coaching down in to the Inglewood and uh, you know there's been. There's been a good, good experience.
A little fantastic because you used to coach here after you left school, you were at Tucson High for a while. Yes, I was great year that's been down there. Some great people, some lifelong relationships built down there, and uh, you know it was a great time. Nothing but great and positive things about Tucson experience. But yeah, no questions. Who were you most pleased to see when you got here? Uh not, you know just recently. You know it really everybody. You know, like I said,
it's a lot of guys that I hadn't seen in a while. You know, I got to see my man, you know, Eric Jonathan, you got to see Brands and of course you know, got six sprints Array, Terry Vaughan, David Lockhart, So you know, some great guys down there that spent a lot of time in our you know, younger days, in our dog year and uh, you know, it was just great to see all those guys once again with their families and everybody's all grown and gray out, and uh, you know, it was just, you know,
a wonderful time. And I was glad I was able to that I could down right and you were here I think ninety three was your last year. Is that right? The ninety two season was my last? Okay, you guys set the table for the ninety three year. Yes, yes, we did. A lot of those guys put a lot of pride and watching those guys play, you know, I think that, you know, we had
set some good groundwork with all those guys. I think that, you know, with myself and Heath Bray and Todd Parton and those guys, and there are Morrison, Keyhan, George Malulu. When we left out of there, I think that we left a mark on that program that they carried over it to that fest Ball season, right right? Uh? Do you hear memories? What are your memories? Most maybe played for Coach Tellmey in the early
nineties because he had been here maybe three or four years before that. Correct, you know what I learned how to handle people while he was there. You learned and I learned what the biggest thus I learned is like you know, and I gotta please everybody, but to try to be fair and equitable with everybody that to deal with. You know, it's a great man, you know, uh, you know, uh, some positive times, you know, give us some great life lessons. And I'd be lying if I
said I love every moment of it. But I'd also be lying if I didn't say that I learned something. I learned something every secret that I was there and his presence around him that have carried on into my life today. Right, no question? Who was your offensive line coach? Uh? Well, I had a few of them, so, uh, Pat Hill was there. Then we transitioned into uh uh Coach Dickey, Charlie Dickey and Jimmy
Young. Oh so it's not like you didn't have very good coaches, right, but all three different personalities, right, They're right, You know that those guys were you know, they were all different personalities fundamentally they were. They were. They were very similar, but you know, just very for personalities, very different approaches to culture. But they all wanted to best out of their group. And I thought we were pretty successful, yeah, no
question. In fact, I remember Pat Hill one of the one of the crazier ones, and I ring without due respect because he'd love to come up with plays and these gadget plays and kind of you know, he was that guy, right, kind of like got out of the box absolutely absolutely, and you know he didn't shot away to me. You know he would always stand by, you know, stand by whatever his opinion was, whatever chance he wanted to take. And uh, you know he was ready to take
on all summers than anything, right, right, you know. And I didn't realize that you were from the LA area. I couldn't remember to spend again thirty some years for me. Uh, so you went, you went back home after all this. Yeah, you know, I've lived in a few different places, and uh, you know, La always calls me home. You know, as I'm getting closer to my retirement age, you know,
sadly to say, I'm getting closer to my retirement years. You know, I'm thinking about where I'm going to go and how I'm going to live out the rest of my life. You know, you know, Tucson is definitely on that list, as well as you know, the Americopa County area. But yeah, it's it's you know, living in La. You know, La always calls me home. But you know it's a little rough out
here now, it's a little expensive. Now, I'm good, need to get back to one of those other places I call it home once some time. Sure, Well, we were there for the tournament for the Sweet sixteen, and I'm thinking, who would want to live here? The traffic takes forever a little. You get used to something after a while, and you know there's you know, there's personal living out here, but it's just the
traffic and the and the cost of living, right. You know, after a while, you know, once you grow up a little bit and and change your mindset about life, you know, you realize it might be trying to go to someone a little bit different, right right. I'm sure you have a lot of friends still here in Tucson, and we talk about this with Jay every now and again. A lot of the ex guys who come to school here stay here or at least find their way back here because Tucson
was good to them. Absolutely absolutely got some great speriends that went there, never let there and retired, you know, working there, and you know the Markel Waves and you know Reggie Gatiss and of the World and things like that that have done well and you know, and made the area home and and blives in it and done that thing and then done some really well wonderful things for their lives and in their lives and for their family. So that two sun has been you know, great to a lot of people. Yeah,
no question. Okay, so maybe let's talk about your weekend. You saw some ex guys. What was your impression about the team? You know, like I said, a top they's a great energy out there. I like the way to fly around. You know, obviously those guys are seeing a lot of pride and being successful and doing things. You know, you know, we'll see when it all, you know, gets put the music in the fall, you know what it really looks like, you know,
being in the new conference and all those good things. But I have nothing but high expectations and nothing but optimism as we move into this this big twelve season and uh you know in twenty twenty four, and you know, I just love what's going on there. I mean not wait to see them perform and compete the season. Yeah, no question, We'll see how good they were. And what did you think about the offense, because you're an offensive lineman guy, and Noah and Tam although teammate got hurt, right, you
know, I need to see a lot of team make live. You know, obviously you know he's a little bit hurt, a little bit banged up. But Noah's you know, Noah's was great out there. I love what I see out of him. I love what he's doing out there. You know, I love the offensive line is coming together really good. I think that those guys are gonna be mallers. You know, you're gonna do a good job out there. So you know, in the game plan it looks solid. So you know, again, I think that they're gonna be just
fine. A couple of quick things involving nil. Okay, so back in the day, you guys obviously didn't have it. What do you think it would have meant to you guys back in ninety ninety one, ninety two, Well, you know, it would have meant that you low would have gotten out of there were even better credit, you know. And and I'll say that because I know, you know some of us, you know, I have some challenge credit coming out of there, But I think they would have
been wonderful. Have we add an nil deals and you'll create some things. I think you're really going to help some guys. They have some family issues and other things that were going on. Yeah, you know, some tough times during that time. You know, it was the nineties, so you know, the nineties were tough years for everybody. You know, for the most part. But you know, have we asked an nil deal that people would have been a great thing. I mean, I'm happy those guys have
those opportunities to do it. Now, you know, there's a time and a place of everything. And he just you know, we're born a little too soon. You know. If you get that good, great kiss and that all over, wonderful things that came out of it, I say the same thing. I was bored way too soon. So here's another question. I'm going to put a hypothetical in front of you. So you're you're here now, you're an offensive lineman, you're the center, you're the guard,
whatever you are. And team Mac or not Mac Noah gets this million dollar contract and I'm just hypothetically now. And and Vincent Smith gets this fifty thousand dollars deal, and I'm thinking, okay, I'm Vincent Smith, how how does this work? And see, I'm the guy who opens holes for the quarterback and this is what I get. Well, you know what, I'm just you know, and I can only speak to me. I can't speak
to anybody else. I speak it for me. I'm gonna say, you know what, I better keep on opening those holes up so that you know, even though he's getting a million dollars and I'm getting fifty thousand, I don't want that fifty thousand to go away. You know, I only want to go up. I don't want to go down for or go away completely mean being upset this grunt and not doing my job. So you know,
you get you get more perps out things. You know, the harder you work and the better you do, So you know that's those are those types of things that were instilled in me by those gentlemen that we talked about earlier. You know, keep working, keep doing it. It might you might not feel like it's fear right now, but you know the flip side of it, did it can go away completely for you and someone else will step in there and get your fifty thousands. No, that's great, good attitude
because you're very true. If you don't perform, then it goes away. Let me ask you another quick question. Because you've been a coach for a number of years. This is a discussion Jay and I have had a few times this week what makes a good coach. And part of the discussion was you can't be a good guy and be a good coach. And I that I mean by a good guy is you don't have that personality you hug the guys and you're you're a good guy. Uh. I think you have to
be a jerk sometimes and jerk's not the right word. You have to be stern and demanding is pretty good, but sometimes happen. You know that it's part for of course. I think that if you're fair and equitable. I think that the one thing that will any player will say, you know, about their coaches. You know, we didn't like it all, you know, we did sometimes, you know, maybe we wanted to, you know, be in the room by ourselves and maybe you know, wrap our hands
around somebody the wind pipe. However, you know, if you are fair and you're equitable and things that you do, and we know that you care, you know, and you care about individual, it was gonna be all right. You know. Yeah, sometimes the conversation might be a little bit harsh, you know, but you know, sometimes the truth harsh. Sometimes it might be a little bit misplaced. But hey, if you're being fair with me and everybody else, I'm good to go. Yeah, I know
that makes sense. Fair and equitable, I think those two things describe a coach. That's a pretty good coach, and I think Dick tell me, was that right? Absolutely? Yeah, absolutely, well, Vinch, thanks for joining us. I appreciate your time and now I have your number as do hey, lock it in or let's talk about them. Okay, thanks a bunch man, take care, be well, Thank you, Thank you. Vincent Smith, former U of a football player of the offense. A big dude, A big dude. Yeah, good dude, good dude too.

Sammon with me for his final fifteen minutes yep of his Eye on the Ball career. Maybe I'll call in. I'll start calling you still calling? That'd be great. You know who let the cat a thing that you enjoy your time here and last yeah says you know, it's kind of fun it is. Come on, talk about sports for two and a half hours.
There's really nothing better. I would know whether to do right rather do beer. This is kind of what we kind of envision it, just kind of we're at a bar having drinks and drinking talking talking sports. Listen, I'm gonna go do it in about three hours anyway with my friends. Boys. Yes, I might as well get ready for it. So yeah, yeah, no, good for you. It's been great, honestly super and not that this job gave you a job, but this job, well you kind
of you know, you kind of knew what you wanted to do. I mean, just being able to experience what a board looks like taking calls kind of. Yeah, it's not it's not producing by any means, but you can probably go to the radio booth up there, short and say you kind of know what you're kind of. I mean, if I went to the radio booth at the Diamondbacks and I was there for a couple of days, I would definitely probably know a lot what I did before. It could be
a pinch hitter. I mean I could back in my day. Yeah, I was. I was a good little league baseball player. Oh no, you sound like Jay. No. I was gonna play and then I decided to play basketball. I picked the wrong sport, Steve, Right, I'll at that's all. I'm five eight. I was a point guard. But I really should have gone with the Oh we got a call her. Okay, Hello, you're on the air. One on the ball, Hey, Steve, how you doing towered? I'm licking my wounds? You in you
in the Sammy here always? Hey, Sammy. Okay, guess what. I fell and I got injured. You know, I'm building a garage in my house, right, Okay, we could go Sunday. Guess where I am right now because I've already moved on. I was born in Chicago. That's where I'm at for a funeral. I've been here for four days. Wow, so you uh, it's been a bad week. I'm sorry, sorry to hear your funeral. Yeah, it is what it is. Do you but we're coming home tomorrow. We're getting home tomorrow. And I was
going to call yesterday. I tried to call, but so I didn't have to face the music. Well, so, how many dinners and wine do I get here? Pretty? No? You know what? Hey, they were pathetic. You know, it's like who knows. It's it's a puzzle. We don't know what to do. But I'm moving on, and I was gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna give j heck because I'm gonna say the Cubs
are gonna end up being better than the Dodgers. Yeah, they'll ask you because because Sam here was being a bit diplomatic with the vocal situation, h do they keep them or get rid of them, Okay, I'll be diplomatic to It's like they are so in trouble that that they might as well keep them because you know, and and and and they have a big meeting with the with the players and say a are they say, do you want me gone or what? Rather than having you know, Johnson and the owner pulled
the trigger. I don't know how that meeting would go. Me. They're not going to be any better off with a new coach, period, even if they even if he's lost the locker room somewhat. I just don't know what to say. I'm just don't have a lot of faith in him. And and you know who there, you know that there, I know Sam, you know their lead assistant, you know Steve right where he's going. He's going to be the b YU coach. He was part of the problem
too, was a big part of the problem. He was supposed to be an offensive guru and the defensive. Yeah, and our offense mostly looked worse than our defense did most of the time. Oh oh yeah, yeah, Well, Howard be Well, thanks for calling, Thanks, thanks for the humble Pike call. Yeah, I have to face the music at two cent I'm in Chicago, having a good time. Actually, Sammy, you so okay, I was wondering to get that call. I was, I was. I knew he was a big Suns fan, so I know you're talking
about it. He'd bet be a couple of dinners wine. He's gonna playing on his irist. It's a yeah. So a couple of quick things. Arizona wide receiver Derek English has decided to enter the portal. He's a wide receiver for U of A. And then DJ Warnell is now going to Indiana former Wildcat. So here's the comings and goings of things. Let me ask you something. Does anybody want to call? Please do five to two zero four one six seventy four forty that'd be great. We interrupt our conversation.
So, your dad's an ASHU guy, kind of around my age, a little younger than me Vegas. You know the guy there's on a state guy. Is he more of a U of A guy now because his checks are coming here? Or is he kind of still loyal to a to a mediocre
program now? He We definitely talk about the the ASU kind of downfall because their athletic department, let's be honest, hasn't been remotely great the last what five years at least at least, but he's a he's kind of a homer when it comes to the Nevada wolf Pack because he spent the most time there, so he he would probably go wolf Pack. Then we're starting to get him to come around. We got him a couple of shirts. He wears
them, he'll come to games. But I think he's still kind of a little bit in his A s U way, So I would probably say they're they're about level. I would probably say, Okay, Vegas, not Vegas, Nevada. He must have been upset with the meltdown in the tournament. Yeah, I mean he he always jokes because his team's always choke and just he's a Cubs fan or was a Cubs fan, and now he's an Arizona Sports fan and we were no better. Oh yeah, but anyway, so
we were talking about the Nevada Dayton game. We were texting, and as a dad, I don't know how many dads text like this, but they'll text and like want like separate sentence. That's me. So I'll get like four back to back texts. It goes Nevada looks good period send halftime wolf Pack might give the Wildcats trouble send and then I get to at the end of the game, Nevada sucks. We choked. It's just it's just so so simple. Dot dot Yeah, you know, the Nevada looks good.
Dot dot dot. That means I'll be back later, right right. And then with with those with the four statements, Yeah, I don't know, it's just I think we were starting to get him to come around on the u of a. But again it's well, he's got more chances because you'rres my brother, brother, he's a junior now going to be a senior. No, just he's running out of money, come on, out of money, run out of time. Yeah right, it's all right. The grand kids will come here too, sure, Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure.
Gotta gotta get back to to song. Whatever is left. I mean a lot of chaos going on over there, A lot of chaos even now, even overnight craziness is yeah, that was nuts. It's what's going on around like campuses all across the country, which is we live in difficult times right now, or or divided times. I should say, okay, we got eight minutes. Anybody want to call five two oh four, one,
six seventy four forty. You can give us a good call, Sammy's goodbye, and you start you graduate the thirteenth, and then you start your job the sixteenth. Oh so you got three he got a three days. We got a look call. Hey, welcome to the ball. You're you're on the phone, Hey, Steve, this is don How you don How are you? What's going on? Hey? Not too much. I just wanted
to compliment Sammy and ask a question, a general question. Sammy's eloquent description of his turn paper there and when you asked him hypothetically when he was thirty, if he had some spare money, how would he want to give it back to the school, you know? And he said he'd like to know where it was coming from and everything else. That was a grown up answer, thank you. That was the the research on the paper and everything very growing up. So how can it? How how does anybody get away with
calling these guys kids? Still? The play the players like like Jordan Washington doing what he did, if he'd have done that in the workplace, sure, dude, he's gone, he's fired. You don't pass money, you don't get nothing for that. And people and people on social media going, hey, man, he's just a kid. You know, why why would
you do that? They're not kids, they're businessmen. Now, yeah, I think, especially now that you use the word businessmen or obviously I think they're now almost quote like professionals if they're going to be getting paid this amount of money. And it's a really hard hard thing to do because some of these kids are eighteen nineteen. But if they're getting paid as much money as a lot of professional people are, they have to be held to standard,
like sure, sure, criticism is on the way. Yes, I agree. You remember Don and Simon here, remember the Oklahoma stake coach of Gundy he directed into the I'm a man, go after me. Yeah, the kids. That doesn't apply any more, It doesn't. It doesn't happen anymore, don't. I don't think it applies anymore. I think once you start getting money, then that that changed everything, because I mean, how are these guys getting money? Are they getting a bi weekly stipend? Are they
getting a bag of cash? Are they getting a ten ninety nine at the end of the year? What did you find out your research? It's it's all individually like contracific. So I mean the things that I found is Okay, if you're getting if you're getting an endorsement from say raising Canes here in Tucson, you'll you'll do ads. You have some question, Yeah, when it comes to the food and stuff, and they'll they'll give you they'll give
you money from from that. But there's also like the donors, if they're giving money to NIO, how how is the university giving the athletes that money? And it goes back to the answer I had we talked about earlier. It's like a lot of times there's it's a real it's real muddy, the water's really muddy. You don't know, and it's never portrayed out there either. It's like, oh, he's getting this money from so and so.
It's going into this like that's why it's tough. Don I'm assuming you don't contribute to the nil, right, No, I don't have that kind of money. Yeah, yeah, no, No. And I say this, I mean I say done, because you're you're You're a not a credible color, because you are a credible color. You're not a crazy caller. You're you're you're, you're you think things through. But a lot of the things
I've seen on the Internet and people rip beating and all that stuff. If you want to be part of the solution and you want to gripe all the time, okay, go ahead, but there's should be a cost at that if you want to see them get better. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. Don Well, No, I think it needs to be. You
know, things need to be put down on paper. I think I think that if you're coming, if you're coming here and you're getting an nil deal, there needs to be some sort of a contract, some sort of guarantee for that money. Because the portal opens and you get to go, and you know you already took that big old sack of money. You know what it does code get for it? Well, no, there's got to be. It's got to be. You know, you got to get to get,
you got to give. Well, let me get. How would you feel if you're the guy who gave up whatever you gave up to have Kerr go to West Virginia. Yeah, and then not even months later, he's gone, He's gone. Yeah. No, I mean that's why I think I think I said it a while back. If I had if I had that kind of money, and if and if I was organizing. If I was in organizing and then I collective, I would make there there would be a contract attached to it, you know, and and it'd be like,
hey, we're gonna give you X, you know. And if playing time doesn't come and you don't want to, you know, and you want to enter the portal, you're going to need to come to us, and then we'll have to come to a separation agreement. Right. No, I think that. I think the smart guys like Emberto and all those I'm sure a
lot of these smart guys are doing exactly that. Yeah, because you have to do that, you do. And I think it's gonna I think it's going to have to be in Ohio state or an Alabama or somebody like that that starts it where it's gonna have. If Fresno States to try to start it, it's not going anywhere. Yeah, Okay, well thanks don, We gotta go appreciate thanks for Sammy, Hey, thank you, I appreciate it. Take care man. Yeah, it's all it's all, like you
say, a muddled area and part of it because we don't know. I didn't do the research you did, but you should have a clear version of it. But It's also like I can do as much research as I want, but I'm not gonna know the specifics of Umar Bollos and il deal. That's that's going to be between him and someone behind the closed door. Realistically, do you think they paid him a million dollars to go play well the King, I don't know, from Florida, Florida, Atlantic, the destroyed
Arkansas. You know what, she's getting paid more than a million reported, more than one that's legit because that guy can play. It's also like, okay, there's there's these numbers being thrown around and probably it's whatever around a million dollars. But it is like, I would love to see the breakdown of how they got that money, don't I don't. I don't care that he's making that money. It's more on the end of what's the breakdown look
like? Is it is eighty percent of it coming from the donors in the university and twenty percent is coming from endorsements around Arkansas or for the kid going there. I think some transparency is really kind of all some people, right sure, want sure and maybe you'll get it and most likely you won't. Most likely you won't, right right, Well, Sammy, thanks for joining us. I thought, you know Vincent Smith's answer to the he's the center
the quarterbacks making Yes, you're making it. Great answer. Yeah, but but there's a butt there. Okay, great answer. But do you really feel that way? Yeah? It's hard. Yeah, that's that's the nature of college sports now, which is crazy wild west, wild west, until we get the guns in the row and all that stuff and you know, everything in the well well West the rifles put away. Yes, it'll be like this for a while. Thank you Sammy for everything. Oh, thank
you, Steve. I really appreciate it. In a fun year of talk and Arizona sports. Good look, come to Derby. Hey, thanks, Yeah, well we'll text. We will text all little more Saturday morning. Okay, okay, thanks everybody,
