Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez. They have their Eye on the Ball on two Palms Sports Stage. Yet Fox Sports fourteen fifty streaming live. I mean I heard radio arm Okay, welcome back to Why on the Ball? You know, Fox Sports forteen fifty on Steve, he's Jay. Now we have some breaking news allegedly Eye on the Ball breaking news on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. All right, so you know, we got all our all our news that's

fit to print from. You know, we go to Twitter and other news things and came across an interesting clip uh today that was posted um involving DeAndre Ayton who apparently did an interviews. He's from the Bahamas, so he was on a on a Bahamas TV news station and had some interesting things to say about just his image. Here's what he had to say. I just feel atta in a way, UM where I think I'm the I'm got a lot

of people find out and I see them feel it. But mainly what I've been working on five or six days a week since we've lost is just motivating myself to change the narrative or what people think about you, you know, because no matter how you put it, I feel like I have no fans, are you you know? And I can feel it because the whole world saying it. And my goal there's old summers to change the narrative, just unlock whatever it is and just completely just focus on me and change the whole

thing. So he's been in the league six years, five years, five six years? Yeah, okay, so um, he is who he is and he has one year here, So tell me the story you told me earlier before he started this today, Well today, I you know, it's Wednesday. I have a regularly regular group of you have a guy, You've a fans and stuff that I sit that I sit with, um football games

and what Now we have lunch every wednes that's for a reason. We're yeah, and we're we're talking about and we're just the strictly conversation with football. We're talking about me today, and we're talking about Jay de Laura, We're talking about you know, Jed Fish, We're talking about who are the good players? And I wanted and all of a sudden, one of the guys says, you know, one of my biggest disappointments that I have at Arizona is DeAndre eight And I'm like, yeah, I mean, we weren't even

talking about basketball, there was no conversation about basketball. So on, he just brings up that DeAndre. He's really disappointed in DeAndre from then, the pastor down now. Okay, so so from who he is now? Sure? Sure, so nothing's really changed. I'm saying all these years number one choice, conversation, number one choice. So the good thing is that the good thing from Deandre's perspective is he's kind of found himself. Well, maybe

he's always found himself. The poem is, if you are who you are, Jay, you are who you are. Now he's going to change his whole mindset to get people. The only way to do that is to be something you're not right, be aggressive, best time, you go out in the court, and play chip on your should all the time. This is a long season, say, And that's the thing. I don't think, Well, he's been a he was a already darn good cos play and some days he was the best player in college bat and some day he never ever

felt he was playing with a chip on his shoulder. He was never he I think he always believed he was as good as people are saying he was. And I don't think he ever played with that ed monster type of yeah, that eds that like he feeling like he had something to prove. Let me say this, um So in twenty sixteen when he when he decided to

come to Arizona and he didn't know anything about any scandal or whatever. I remember Bruce Pasco was asking Sean, and Sean the guy who answers these questions, Bruce asked him, there's some type of feeling that DeAndre kind of just plays, plays nonchalantly because he's already big, he's he's he's overpowers these guys. He's just good because he's big, get good, and he pays with no desire. And obviously Sean poop pooed that that question. Of course he

would. Of course, of course he would. But guess what accurate as all hell? I think it is accurate as all hell then and today and now and now, and he hears it now and he actually you don't think he heard it before, Well I'm sure he did, but he's expressing it now publicly, and and and I think that I think that will again. It's one of those things where Okay, is he going to do something about this or is he gonna be same all DeAndre when he gets on the court,

or will he do it one day and not the next. Well, I bet that's going to be. That's what we saw. Somewhere in Detroit, Monty Williams is saying, that's all I asked. Yeah, that's all I asked. Right, And now the circumstances of events because he needs and I guess one of his greatest confidants and then in motivators was Chris Paul right yea allegedly and now he's gone, and now he's gone, so yeah, I mean, I don't you know, that's all. And you know what,

that's all Arizona fans ever ever wanted. But you know, I really ever wanted was to see a guy like him, a guy like Nico Mannion, guy like Josh Green, guy like Stanley Johnson just come out here and give it. They're all and play like you've got something to prove instead of feeling like you've already proved it. So I'm just gonna do this. This

This is the They are the nil versions of players. Yeah, they came here, got what they got and got out and got the hell and got out all the guys you mentioned, And I know this is deviating from the break news, which was the one of the one and done, the most impressive, the most feel good guy, and the gain you remember or do

you even remember. I almost think that I didn't really like any of them, maybe maybe maybe Aaron Gordon, because I thought he seemed to be a pleasant guy, had a smile on his face, He didn't feel like there was a lot of pressure on him. He went out there, he felt like he played hard. He had some I mean, he was he was a number, you know, he was a one and done, but he had some limited skills. Guy couldn't make a free throw to save his life.

Yeah, but and you felt like he was working at it. Of all those guys, I think I liked Daron Gordon the most because of all those things. Stanley Johnson is way at the bottom of my list, and those guys right right, and then I liked, I liked, and I felt bad for Jared Bayless. I was just gonna mention him because he was

at a time when things were going tough here. It was a lot time he had to play, understand, and he was good, and we talked to him a lot because we were allowed to talk to the guys about it again. Good dude, very very good player obviously. Um, but but he's a different one and done right because we had we had access to him.

Yeah, you knew a little bit more about him. Yeah, but I like, you know, I kind of like Jared Bayless and then the rest of those guys, you know, if they if they if they had come or not come, I you know, whatever, right whatever, right. Um. As we've mentioned a pactwell, media day is day after tomorrow. News came out today that uh one of what was likely to be the

uh one of the leading attractions deon Sandra coach primal. So I didn't mean to call coach prime Colorado head coach is not gonna be able to attend. He's having another surgery and so he announced to it he's gonna be missing it. So their defense coordinator Charles Kelly, I'm pretty sure everybody is unhappy about.

I'm sure. I mean, I'm guessing there are some people making the trip for that just for that right, for that, but having you know, he's been having some health problems and so he's having another another surgery tomorrow, so he is he's not gonna make pactwelve Media day highly unfortunately, highly unfortunate. Um, let's see, so the Northwestern thing is keeps getting worse.

When you think it can't get worse, it keeps getting worse. So now the lawyers that got hired to represent what was verse eight now a dozen, and now there's a couple of separate lawsuits even though the entire Northwestern football team said this didn't happen. Um, now that the lawyer Ben Crump is saying that the hazing issues they believe, according to their investigation so far, believe it's gone to softball, volleyball, baseball, and cheerly. He isn't

going in again, I don't. This doesn't shock me at His quote was, it's not one coach, it's an athletic department, possibly a president that allowed This doesn't shock me at all. It doesn't because you know, if it happens there, happens to other places. New Mexico State happened too with the same thing that just two dudes who didn't put up with it anymore. And yeah, and at some point you know that's gonna happen. Yeah,

yeah, Well you piss off the wrong person. Yeah you know, I mean you know that again, you've seen enough dateline to know, if more than one person knows what's going on, it's going to get out, right. And and this is obviously a systemic something that's been going on for years and years, maybe all the way back to when Pact Fitzgerald himself was a player, right, I mean you could you could make that, you could

make that presumption. Well, and then as a coach, it's like, you know, this has been going on, so it's part of who we are. I asked you this. Uh, well, well back, if it's happening here, don't you think? Wow? And that's what these lawyers have said. We're looking at other schools as well, so there may be a lot more to come on the right. Well, there's kind of like,

you know, I'm who's mos macho? Who's mos macho? The guys who try to right and even in other sports, right, and those guys who said that the entire football team says that this didn't happen all right, Okay, so I don't you've seen this? So you know, the Green Bay Packers is a public company, so there are finances and stuff are public, so they you know, we're just got out about how much money they got, how much revenue they drew from the NFL TV deals and all that

other stuff. So if if I've told you the total amount of money distributed to the teams thirty teams, thirty two teams, thirty teams in the NFL, how much money in total they got, how much did they get? Left? Eleven point nine eight billion dollars? Wow, they're saying. The packers announced that they got three hundred and seventy four point four million. So multiply that by the number everybody gets the same, Multiply that out by the

number of teams, and you come up with almost twelve billion dollars. You want to talk about plenty money? Yeah? Yeah, and then the shareholders or the stakeholders get that. No, well the agreed packers, Yeah yeah. But you know what I've heard you because the publicly understood those people who own you know, who bought shares. Yeah, they don't get anything. They don't get So was the money because there was the thing I'm gonna I'm gonna say it. I looked into it. I saw a thing come across

social media. I'm being able to invest in a horse, right, and then I started looking into the sure, no, you you if you're one of those people that makes that investment. You get squad, you're just giving them your money. What you're doing. You don't get a point point zero zero. Yeah, but it amounts to almost nothing, which is what you know, You just part of that horse. The majority owners, you know, you know, the fans who have a share of the Green Bay Packers.

They don't get a lot out of that. So anyway, So anyway, about eleven point nine eight billion dollars that the NFL distributed to its teams this last year, that's that's just that's just crazy money, crazy money. Hey, there's a Tiger in the British Open. I know you don't care about the British or whatever, Tiger Christians. He's only the second Tiger to ever play in the British Open. Yeah, that's a cool thing, right

right. You know the other other world famous that we all know, and that starts tonight in case you want to know, Rory mclroy's the favorite along with the Scottie Scheffler. I'm taking I'm taking uh um, Ricky Fowler. He's my boy, my boy rock. He's playing well, I'm taking Ricky Fowler, all right. The Phoenix. We just talked about this the other day. The Phoenix Suns, who don't have a G League team, are now looking into starting a G League team uh in the for the twenty four

twenty five season. So that that would mean that all the team, all the NBA teams would have a team. Right they used to have one, did they did? The Sun's Dight Thomlinson. Yeah, they him and they played in in flight stuff um at least up to about a couple of years ago. Wow, because one of the former you of a managers uh was the was the coach? Oh okay, but then they just spend it they

disbanded. Well there matt Ishbia wants to wants to start it again. Oh yeah, said the Sun's previously operated G League affiliated called the Northern Arizona's Sons, whom Exo owner Robert Sarvis sold the Detroit Tense in twenty twenty. Steven nice pool that yeah, I remember because they had the former U League guy um so but they I wonder why they wouldn't done That's kind of silly. Yeah, wy wouldn't yea, why would you have a minor league? Take

cost? I don't know so sorry, well maybe a cost everybody knows. Yeah, you know. So, yeah, so the Suns are working on getting So that's somebody in that that came out on Twitter and somebody in the responses said they'll draw better than ANC basketball. Yeah no, yeah, even though you see like somebody get in Vegas. You saw the big names m Yama and those guys, but it's not well attended. It's not. Yeah, but when they played in Vegas, people have that Summer League people have

fun with that. Oh yeah, all right. Uh. And then my friend, my friend Dan Patrick announced when he's retiring, not for another four years, but he said at the end of twenty twenty seven. How old is he? I think he's like sixty seven. Oh so that's yeah, that's old. Yeah, he's been around a long time sports, you know, the ESPN guy for the longest time. Started at CNN. Um. Yeah, but I put a show on every morning when I'm working center on

my desk to put it on the peacock. If you're able to last that slong in this profession, right sixty seven, you've done a heck of a job. Because there's land mines everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, and we're seeing him. Man, people are people are stepping on him all the time right now, Yeah, or they're pulling the plug on yeah. You see,

Ross Dellingers went from Sports Illustrated. Yeah, Who's sports? Yeah? And I don't know if he saw a layoff comment or what, but uh, you know, he's one of the three guys on the on the podcast with that Orty and Dan Wetzel, and he's one of the he's one of the who seems to know a lot about you know, I should yet know the the realignment stuff, the TV deal stuff very much on the business tech jump jump before they push you, all right, man, John Willner coming up.

We're gonna pick his brain on what the hell is going on at the back well ahead of me today, We'll be right back. This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jacob Salas on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. Hey, welcome back to I on the Back here on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera, he's Jacob's oars. Now on the phone, we have John Wilder ky pat twelve hotline. John. How you doing.

I'm good, We're doing. I'm sure you don't miss one hundred and twelve degree wither It's only one hundred and twelve there, no, no, I mean compared to Phoenix is much worse. Right, he had the twentieth straight day of over one hundred and ten. I think I think we're in the mid one hundred. It's like one oh five today because it ranged a couple of days ago in or still it's still. It's bad though, it's bad, it's bad. So, Um, Pacclove meeted down Friday. Uh No

PAC twelve TV deal in place. You posted on your PAC twelve hotline the top five storylines, and that's sort of you know, number one. What's going to happen? What's George Klafkoff gonna say about the Metiorites deal and the future of the PAC twelve. Um, I know everybody's been saying that this thing is gonna get done by Friday. Doesn't look like it. So what are you thinking now about what he might say and what he's not gonna say. Well, he's got to say something about it, right, I mean

he had to get up there and say no comment, no comment. Uh. Now, in the extent of how much detail he's gonna put me that, I don't know. He doesn't want to. Honestly, he does not want to offend the negotiating partners by providing too much detail. But I just think he's got to say something. He's got to find that, you know,

fine line between saying nothing and given way too much. Right now, that could be a few generalities, but even that would be more than he has said for seven months, because he hasn't uttered a keep about the negotiations publicly since early December. And I think a lot of that's because for a long time, Domember a whole lot to say, uh, And part of it has just been their their strategy. But he has gonna say something, I think, or else it's gonna just be a very poor pr for them.

So John, I know you as a young man, you were here for a while many years ago. How how how have you aged during this conversation because it's it's been lasted more than a year, you mean, the conversation with you guys right now, Because this conversation right in the last two

months has aged me twenty years. You guys have done this before. Right on the beach, you cover a coaching search and it goes on for a few weeks or a maybe a couple of months, and you know you want to try to stay on top of it, but you've got to chastings turn out to be false, and you've got to figure outs are being straight with you or not. Well, this is like cover. The coaching search has gone up for thirteen months. Yeah, I'm looking forward to doing ending.

I don't know how it's gonna end, uh, but I think it's gonna end. I would be surprised to be not over before the season starts, for sure, if I could. What's the worst possible scenario, Well, for who, the league, the collective, the worst possible scenario is that the commissioner puts before the President's a media deal that does not meet their bar, does not clear their bar either in terms of the money, order,

the platforms like they're you know, the exposure. And so then all of a sudden, you know, Colorado says we're going to the Big twelve, and then Arizona and arizonire safety the same thing, and maybe Utah does, and they're left with six teams that have to kind of repackage them the whole conference. I mean, I don't think Oregon and Washington are going anywhere.

They're never going to go to Big twelve, and there's no option to go to the Big tent right now, so they would probably stick around with the Washington State organ State and Count Stanford and try to reform some kind of league. But that's that's like the doomsday scenario right there. Yeah, that seems What do you think he'll say tomorrow? Where do you think can or will say tomorrow? I think he will say. I think he's going to provide

some kind of timeline. I really do. And I don't know if he's going to give us us a date or a week, but I think he's gonna he's going to do his best to indicate this thing is coming to a close, because if he can't do that, then it's gonna be well, this guy can't land. The plane's flying right, They've got to get the plane down on the on the runway. And so I think he will at least provide some kind of timeline. I don't think he is going to talk

specifically about the which which media companies they're talking to. He may get into a little bit specific on that balance between linear versus streaming, less their strategy on the night games or the you know, the six and twelve days. I think that stuff is as port the presidents almost as the money themselves. They want to have a media contract that is fanned friendly in terms of people being able to get to the stadium and knowing in advance when the games are.

Are you surprised they didn't get the deal done by this time? I mean, if you would ask me last July, would this filling still be going on? I was a new chance was still going on now. I would have thought the conference was going to dissolve, and they didn't get a deal done by now. So yes, I'm surprised. What I'm saying a few a few weeks ago on your podcast you predicted and again you were, you know, just saying, my thinking is they're going to get it done

by you, by me by media day. So I mean, in that regard, are you kind of surprised that? Yeah? I thought I've really thought they were going to get it John in the first couple of weeks of July. I did. And I think that it is possible that they could have gotten it done. And I don't know this, but I think it's

possible that they could have gotten it done. But you know, they've had somebody, a new media company has kind of come come to the table and said, you know what, we're interested, and so they have delayed things to see if they can you know, rustle up moren't bids to drive up

the price. Uh, that's just that's just a guess. And I also think that in fairness to myself and many others who have thought that was going to be done earlier this summer, I think the situation ESPN has really been a little bit of a I don't know if it's a wrench that caused a delay. You know, Disney c came out and said, we're looking for you know, ESPN is going to be going to become streaming service. Uh, we need an equity partner. You know, we're reconsidering, you know,

everything about ESPN's business model. I think that may have caused a delay too, because it's making the Pack twelve. We you know, we consider its strategy in a good way because of the clearly streaming, the acceptance of streaming is coming quicker than people thought, and I think that's that's beneficial for the PAC twelve. So along the lines of my first question of the worst case scenario, what's the minimum? What would make that minimum be twenty five

million? Is it? Is it less than that? No? I think so. I mean, if you're going to use the Big Twelve as a benchmark. Right, They're gonna pay each school it's basically I think, thirty one point seven million per year, and they've got a deal with Fox and ESPN. A lot of their content on ESPN is going to be on ESPN

plus. I think I think if Cleo CoV comes to the presidents and says he's got a deal within ten percent of the Big twelve, you know, twenty nine thirty million at a low end and thirty four million at a high end, and he's got a presence on ESPN, I think that is going to be seemed satisfactory. You know, I don't think any of these schools are going to leave If the difference in money is a million or two a year. That's on the margins and it gets eaten up by added travel costs.

So I think you just got to be within ten percent, all right. So moving on to some of the other storylines. I know a lot of folks, probably you included, were looking forward to getting a chance to have some time with Dan Sanders. I'm excuse me, Coach Prime again. I keep forgetting we're supposed to call him coach Prime, but he we found out today is not showing up. You had to. You had to rework your your five storylines. But beyond that, you know, the whole Don

Sanders thing for the PAC twelve good thing, bad thing. You think that he's going to be any good? What are your thoughts on all of that? Well, I mean, I think it's been great for Colorado and great for the Pack twelve. It's kind of like se hired Lincoln Riley, although the yarn is even more of a you know, I mean, he's a sports icon, right, so in terms of brands helping your brand, it's been great for the school and the conference and all the attention he's attracted.

How are they going to do this year? You know, I don't know. It's it's impossible to really know because he's got like sixty transfers. The problem is the depth. That's what I think he's got. You know, he could probably feel the starting twenty two that could get him to five or six wins, But I just don't know. They lost so many guys. I just don't know what the depth is going to be like, especially on the line of scrimmage, and so that that could be their biggest problem.

But it's obviously they're going to be better. And he is a newsmaker. I mean, Colorado's on the big new kickoff I think the first two weeks of the season, and I cup of how much attention he pays to what other people are saying about him. But I mean that's kind of who he is. Do you think, I know, you think he should just not pay attention to that stuff and just move on or what do you think? I mean, he is who he is, I feel like. And the

thing is, his methods have been very controversial. I mean nobody has done what he did. They were cutting, they were making no bones about it, they were cutting players, and uh, you know, when you've got sixty two guys, it is uh that is different in college and so some people not take it, take it to that. Uh, but you know, he's Dion. He's gonna he's gonna speak his mind. So the other storylines, what were you maybe another pressing one? Well, the big thing

I think is the quarterbacks, right, Uh, they the facts. What has got the best lineup of quarterbacks in the whole country. And so we're going to see a bunch of those guys on Friday, Uh, including to the Laura who's whose presence on the podium I think is uh very interesting in Arizona's taking that approach, and I commend them for putting them out there and kind of facing the storm head on, you know. And also obviously the last year the LA schools in the in the league is going to be something

that's talked about. Uh So there's a lot. I mean, it's uh, it's gonna be packed with with storylines, uh for that one day and the season anticipated season the compas has had in years. Yeah, do you vote in the media poll? I'm sorry, what was Do you vote in the media poll? Oh? So, I do usually, but this was not the case when they they sent out a notice about the media poll and the all conference teams, and the deadline was before my vacation ended, and

I needed a break. I looking at you man being the family guy and all that, very cool John, and then a lot, you know, the last summer my vacation was destroyed. I wanted to take it and as I did, want to do without rese and that that was just gonna take too much time. Okay, so we have a couple of minutes here, and I'm not sure how long you'll take without doing any bias and who's doing

what here? Jay and I make another bet. You know it's Tuesday or Wednesday, So we make a bet anything you know what cockroach is gonna go up the wall. So so there's teams who's gonna go h go ahead and explain it. Who's gonna who without giving away just who's gonna win? Who's gonna win the pactole? Well, I picked Washington in this January, and I'm sticking with Oski? What for what? For what reasons? One of us has Washington great quarterback, Uh, tons of playmakers on offense and very

good pass rushers. And who's gonna beIN a second? I haven't gotten that far, you know, I don't know Uta two. Um, A lot of it depends on Camerasing's health. Right, he had an acl Rose Bowl. I don't think he's done anything all off season. And that's gonna be it's gonna be interesting to see what he says Friday in terms of his his

recovery. You know, uh they opened before and then uh Baylor, and those are two huge games from the Pack twelve and they you know, if he's not healthy or one hundred percent, that could have a real impact on on Utah season. All right, well we'll tell you that I took Washington, Steve took USC. Yeah, I mean those are the two. Those are the two probably to pick. Although it's interesting, right Utah's back to back conference champs, and yet they probably are gonna be picked third four.

USC had Wren back to back conference chips, Oregon or even Washington, they would be the clear favorite right going into the third year. But Utah, you know, there's just a little bit below the radar. You don't think, you don't think you get picked behind Oregon. I would doubt it. I don't know. I mean the way Oregon season enter last year, I don't know. Yeah, they might, they might get picked fourth, and

mean that would even be organ indication. Back to backs conference champs with a quarterback con returning get picked four and the best coach in the league and they get picked fourth. Okay, do you think Arizona wins six games? Uh? You know that I have thought about. I've been a bet against on that one. I think they're gonna be better. But the league is better, right, there's exactly the top of the league is better. Colorado is gonna be better. Uh A sue I think is gonna be better. Uh

so. Uh. That's the problem with Arizona is have they gained around relative of the competition, not on an absolute basis, And I'm not sure if they have or not. I feel the same. Well, Stephen, I have a bet on that too. I took over five and a half, he took under five and a half. Yeah, I would take I would do it. That's gonna be close. There's a stretch out where they have to come up with winds that might be sketchy. We'll see what happens. Johan, thanks a bunch. I fund out there. Man's day out of

trouble. Okay, all right, guys, thanks a lot. All right, man, I appreciate it. Thanks for Yeah, It's it's funny. We get about twelve thirteen minutes left. If you guys want to give us a quick call your thoughts on all this craziness with you at twelve. I know we're trying to talk football, and we want to talk football, but we're still talking all that other stuff and you know, until they get and that's it. You know, I'm with John, right,

let's just let's get get the stunts. We can move on. I mean, I can't even imagine, you know, as he said, it's been like a year long coaching search for him. And uh, I'm glad I'm not in the middle of this. Well and in fact, nobody locally really

is. Yeah, well, John is providing the coverage here, you know, because as as Justin Spears said on our on the show on Monday, you know, you know it, Justin's covering the football, He's covering ears on the football when you're talking about all the other stuff going on with it. You know, the TV deal and the conference that you know, John stuff appear, you know, is in the Star, It's syndicated in the start, so that they rely on his stuff to cover that cover those angles.

I guarantee you that it's going to be anti claimactic. It's gonna be kind of like a went noodle. Well yeah, I mean, how much can clap coughs say? Right, it's even when it happens. Oh, I shaved my legs for this, because come on, we talked about money and minimums and maximums and ESPN and streaming at all. We know everything that's involved. I'm starving trouble with that vision. I got nice legs. Come on, we know all the all the we have the ingredients to the stew.

We just don't have the stew, right, No, yeah, you're you're right. I mean you know, like you said, you know, there's gonna probably be an ESPN aspect to it, a streaming aspect, but you know the money is gonna be about you know, high twenties, low thirties and okay, it's done, let's move on. Yeah, you have a date. You just don't know what she looks like. Yeah, good luck with that. Wow. Yeah, well I hope she's worth thirty one million dollars. Well, yeah, that's the minimum or that's the maximum.

You probably that's probably gonna get you the that's gonna probably be way and you'll be over your head'll be over your head. I know, I know, I know she's gonna be way better looking. Yeah, you'll probably be about a twenty five twenty six million. You say, well, okay, I'll take it. Yeah, I'll take it. Yeah. No, But you know, you know the other you know again, some of the other angles he talked about, you know, the Dion Sanders stuff and the Colorado stuff.

I mean, it is bringing a lot of attention to the PAC twelve, regardless of whether we think it's good or not. You know, we've talked to Brian how the beat writer for for the uh for the Boulder Paper, and you know he's it's you. I would say, he said it was madening. It's just a lot right, well, game, such a huge person out screen game. It was freezing cold, blah blah blah, and it was packed. It was packed. I'm sure Brad feels good about

the fact there's probably a lot of people reading his stuff. But uh, you know, and and that that that's kind of you like that, right, I mean you know, I mean, you know the great basketball seasons you covered and that I covered and stuff like that. The fact that you knew that people were reading the stuff they were writing that was that was a very good feeling, sure, and you know it was important. Yeah, it's important that people who wanted to know, even even now us as crazy

as it is. H Brad said something about that with the popularity of the basketball program specifically changed gears a little. I don't know if I agree with him. Basketball here since lew arrived eighty three, but eighty five eighty six, when the magic started to you could see it. It was pretty strong. It was it was pretty strong. So I don't think I don't think it just came to the nineties. He just kind of was enhanced. Wait,

well set the tongue, yeah, exactly. And at that from that point on, I mean, I know there were a lot of people got behind it, and people were excited and stuff like that. But when when eighty eight hit and they got to the Final four, you know, there was a sense of you know, Arizona had had gotten to somewhere that and

nobody ever thought it would get shut, right. I mean, I remember thinking, they're in the final freaking four, you know, And even as close as they got that that one season under Fred Snowden, you know, if they were playing UCLA in the lead eight at UCLA and I'm like, I know, I sat and down and watched the game, but I knew

they weren't going to be Ucla. I think gave a good game. Yeah, but you know when you think about in eighty eight that they actually got into the final four after three straight first round bosses, and you thought, wait a minute, this isn't like, you know, this is the national Championship and every Zona's in it. Arizona doesn't get to play in that sandbox. Ever, we didn't think they were ever gonna get to play in that

sandbox. Everonell of a sudden they were in it. And actually there were a lot of people, including me, who thought they were gonna win it. And now from that point on it became like that was sort of the bar, sort of the bar. And the next year was even worse in terms of hype. They were the number one team in the country for a lot of the year, a lot of the time, and they went into the tournament number one and then got beat in the sweet sixteen with those typical

Arizona Well that's what things. You realize that because you've lived enough of those years. Yeah, you know it's like Lucy pulling up to a football but you know, I've because I'm a bigger fan of football, I still have always believed that Arizona, when you talk about an X town, football town or basketball town, I've still felt like in their hearts, Tucson has been a football town because like they let's put this way. Let's say Arizona hadn't

been to either the Final Four or the Rose Bowl today. Okay, there would be more fans rooting for the Rose Bowl than the Final Four. Now right, that's time I feel like I feel like more if you let me. Let me say it differently, if Arizona had never been to a Final Four and had never been to a Rose Bowl, Okay, and you asked general sports fan and Tucsons, we've which would you rather go to? For go to? First, we've asked this question, well, we asked it

in the context so have you've already been to a Final four? People answered it in that kind of I'm saying, hadn't been to either. And you asked the fan in Tucson which would you rather go to? I'm pretty sure I'm pretty sure you know this. You know this crowd better than me. But let me also say this to you, jay Um, I've been written a story at least twice for a number of people. Tucson is a fickle sports town. One and a lot of the people now aren't from Tucson,

are not from Tucsons. So they're indifferent to the University of Arizona football program, right right, because you want to go the game. Yeah, they're playing this guy of this gets and tickets and it's later riving, right, So it's it's they're not they're not you anymore. Now they're not you. But but I will say there are more of them then there are basketball fans. Oh well, feel there's maybe no, seriously, there's there's twenty to

twenty five thousand Arizona fans will go to every game. Maybe they I know they didn't coming out of the summon stuff, but they've always put and and that's too has always I mean, Steve, they were selling twenty to twenty five thousand season tickets. Let me ask you before someone came in and set it on fire. Yeah, well, let me ask you this. If Arizona played in a bigger arena, I don't know, whatever number you want to give. Um, they would sell it. I bet eighteen thousand macs.

I don't know. I don't know. I think it runs out pretty soon after this because they're not they're not selling it out on the season ticket basis right now. Well, I think they will. It hasn't been because Sean poo poo that yeah, at the end of the shin. But it's been a while since they've done that. Yeah, I think that'll I think that'll get better. But I don't distribute to the fan basis for football is bigger. It's kind of built in, isn't it kind of built him because

well, because it's a bigger stadium. But I think but again, I think it goes to can you say, can you say that about Kansas football, that that there's more football fans at Kansas than there are basketball fans? Probably not right, No, because that's obviously that's what I'm saying. So, but I think at Arizona there are, oh, there's more football fan Anybody want to call in and maybe take a side, don't I don't know

because I don't know. How about how about Kentucky? Same thing. They're bad at football too, They're just a bad But Arizona's bad at football too. But yet I think that in in you know, when you break it completely down, just share numbers regardless of who's got a bigger stadium or whatever. I think you can you're gonna sound more season football tickets than you're gonna

south season basketball tickets. Well, uh, apples to apples, given it's a fifty four fifty four thousand apples to apples or I'm just saying, but don't but just a point fan number of football fans versus number of basketball say, I don't know if anybody wants to call in and pick a side of I don't know. I understand your point, which is a good one. I just don't know. Yeah, you know, when are you gonna call me? All Right, you're on the air and I on the ball.

Hey, so I got a perspect I'm an eightive two zone, and so I got a perspective from the eighties and nineties, two thousands and now okay, okay, So I would say if it hadn't been either one and it was a definitely Rose Bowl would be the definite one. But I would I would honestly say nineties and beyond the buzz would be for basketball. Yeah, So I'm just thinking of of the trust that we have for the football program and coaches that we've got. So that's just my perspective. What if you

are you're in two son right, you're physically and two sons? Yeah you're so, you're if they go to the Rose Bowl, you're definitely buying tickets right, Well, I would, I would honestly like he did for the one shot one that I wouldn't think it be a prolonged experience, you know. For basketball though, I think as a buzz of watching and following.

I think it's in the brain that we have products that make it a the NBA, you know, and and it's an overall like exciting package, you know, as an eightive two soon And we also think that the games we don't have access to it. If you don't have a certain level of um, you don't are in the retiring season valley with with with season tickets. You know, it's a it's it's an exclusive experience. But following it on TV, you know something I've been most to Zone and due, So that

is a good point. You're right, you know you got you know, you can get a football ticket for relatively cheap that you can't get it back. Yeah, and you know every I was a part of the Nathole group when it was a dollar a game as a kid growing up in the eighties and stuff, and then in the nineties of whom not that expensive to get there. It's still not that an expensive to try to go, y'all catch a few games, you know, and it's at it is so empty based

on what it used to being out. I remember back in the days when based so the twilet people down from the upper decks and three hundred you know after set down. So but overall that those bridges have been burned so badly that unless there's a huge turn around, is still going to say it that way? Which which are you more passionate about? I would say, I mean, honestly, if we make it to another bowl, you know,

um, we would be as a community more passionate. I said, two two voluears in a row were more more passionate, were equally as passionate as we for football. For basketball, I know, basketball also has burned our bridges. I compare us to the Dallas Cowboys in many ways for the program that we had a one shot wonder in the nineties and we haven't really done much since then, But somehow we still think we deserve to be a blue But who is this that aspects me? Who is this? Who my name?

They are? Yeah, Steve loves you, man, Steve loves you. My dad passed away back in two thousand and it reminds me of listening to my dad and his friends coming on in JR. We appreciate the callege. Thanks for listening, all right. I think I think he makes a point for you guys, and I think the eighties whatever its sput on for him right because you were as a kid, I always had hope and you continue to part now. He he talked to us like where his dad.

He's probably when you get to when you get to your when you get to heaven, you use that term loosely, and you see your father, and you're gonna tell them that the gut guts to the rose Bow. Well, I'm not gonna lie to them if they haven't, I mean, if they know, no, no, no, if they do, are you gonna sorry you weren't there? But uh, you know, we got there, We got there. I don't know. Damn it, Steve, Thanks for that was a great cause. If we do appreciate that. Thank you for

calling, Thank you for listening. All Right, we gotta hit the road. We're gonna be back him out. Uh Yogi roth PAC twelve Conference uh or Pactweb Networks Analysts Football Animals will be hosting the studio part of the uh PACTWEL Media Day. He'll be on with us tomorrow to talk about some of the things he expects to see at pactwelve media down Friday, so be sure to be here for that
