Steve Bravera and Jacob Salles. They have their Tie on the Ball on Tucson Sports Stage yet Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. Hey, welcome back to High on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve, He's Jay. Now we have our guy, Henry Go breaking news is Eye on the Ball Breaking news on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. So third baseman and Tucson native Cad McGee drafted in the ninth round by the Cardinals. He went to Salpoint Catholic
High School. What round ninth round when he won a state championship with them in twenty nineteen. He played college baseball for Gonzaga and Texas Tech. Okay, so he he was out. This was his last year in college. How did you had to be? Yeah? Ninth round third baseman. I don't remember the name? You know? Hey, you and me either, I mean, hey, get take your shot man pick? Yeah, who don't you? I didn't get drafted? You get drafted? You wish you
was? Did you get drafted? You wish you'd be in those situations? Yeah? Yeah, very cool. You know, remember we're talking about this with with Keisha Johnson when he didn't get drafted, and you know, maybe it was better for him to go to a place where you but there's still something about getting drafted. You'll always wear that, right, You get that merit badge and you get to keep it. I you know, that's pretty cool to get drafted like that. Good good, good job. That's pretty
cool. The Arizona relief pitcher Trevor Long has signed a free agent deal with the Mariners. He pitched for four seasons at Arizona. So that's another picture out there. Well he was going out the door anyways, he's done. Yeah, but I mean every guy that's so far that is signed or that has that got drafted with an Arizona connection a couple of recruits, and then theres are all pictures like, Okay, did they not have a bunch of great hitters or what you know? I mean, that's some guys that could
hit, uh, but maybe they're not draft age yet. So because what was I think the dude what's his name? A kid from Cdo? Is it from Cdo? Uh? Huh uh? Guy hit all the homeworks for for Air a while back this year. Oh oh oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you're talking about things just a sophomore. Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, is the cdo Yeah? I think so, Yeah, I think so. I don't think yeah, I don't think he came out to see sense. Well, see that's why we
have you. You came up with those little young names. We don't have any nineteen thirty five, yes, nineteen twenty fourteen, twenty four no, not so. Watch I just saw the shirt that you're wearing. Is that something? You guys? Got a cool shirt shirt? They gave it out at the basketball one of the basketball yea, yeah, I want it. I want my son, but no one in college is my sides. Now, Okay, it's a great looking shirt, but do you just keep that
under your spare tire or something that that is? And it's wrinkled as all hell. He's a college dude. Man, he pulled it out from between your mattresses. What do you think it was? I bet you you only wear it. It's the only thing that was clean. You know that wasn't clean? No, it says time, I mean Light fan club for those of you out there in radio land, it is. I'll try to get Steve some next season, extra large man, extra large. Maybe I'll fit
in to it and lose some weight. The Heat Summer League team beat the Mavericks ninety two to seventy nine. Palla Larsen had thirteen point, six rebounds, three assists. Keisha Johnson had nine points and two rebounds, but he left the game with a left ankle spring. Who Yeah, he can't afford that. But you know the thing is if you're good and they have a whole space for you. Yeah, and Pelly's numbers, those are his numbers. Yeah, that's what he does. Yeah, that's what he did here,
right for sure. You know, I wonder if they're both gonna make it. I think one of them, will you think? So? I don't know who, because there was the he's got a contract. It was a sway thing. They're spending money on him, right, he better try to make the team. Yeah, and all he's got to do is not mess it up, right, don't don't mess it up? Yeah, and hopefully nobody else behind you excel, right Yeah, so yeah, yeah, okay, and interesting, we'll see, Yeah, we'll see. How long
did summerleague go? Do you guess it's almost over? It's like five more days, Yeah, it's almost over all, right, not just staying in Vegas for two weeks. No, what to do? No, it's hard. It's hard, you know. I when I go, when I've been going for the packed off term. I was there Tuesday, this Sunday.
That's hard. It's low. Yeah, but you're also working, so you're still a long day going to your you know, leaving your room and going somewhere and walking through the slot machines and all the noise and going out in the street. It's a that's a long time to be there, you know. And I people go there and they gamble for a week. You know. I don't know how you could do that. I mean, I if it's if I'm going to just gamble, I've got three days in me,
like a Friday or Sunday. The funny thing with you, and not funny thing is is just what you do. You don't go. You sit at a place and watch for three days, right, You don't meander, you don't blah, yeah, you know, you just sit, eat your food and watch the game. Yes, exactly, that's what we do. You could do that in your couch. I could. There's no reason for us to go on that trip in November, right, Everything that we do there,
we can do here. We just we just don't. And I think I told you you go to have you watch that stuff now in the in the stadium. No, it's fantastic. Yeah, it's a we might have to make a trip over there this coming. It's like it's like man cave heaven. Yeah, it's better go then in the day of the night. Uh, they probably you can find a seat twenty five bucks to sit.
And then food you have the out doors are indoors indoors indoor or the indoor part and you got to require to eat some of my food blah blah blah. But it's got everything. Yeah. The other thing you probably I don't know if you can get a massage there, but it has everything. Yeah. My my, my son and his friends. They they went to the outdoor. Oh and they paid like one hundred, seven hundred dollars to get like one uh chase lounge thing, you know, and they like six s
guys sat on right, guys in a hot dog. I didn't I didn't know. I would have liked to see that because the indoors they did. They thought it was a blast. Yeah, they had all right. Arizona Baseball has three of the top one hundred prospects for the twenty twenty five I will be draft pitcher Jack Laughlum, outfielder Caleb Ganzen, and pitcher Dylan would all right, well they again, they're gonna need those pictures for sure because there a bunch of theirs are gone. So yeah, well we'll see how
that goes. I yeah, I know, you're the at college baseball coach is always worried that the guys are gonna you know, the recruits are gonna get drafted and stuff like that. So we'll see what what Chip ends up with when this is all said and done. Former Arizona running back Michael Wiley was drafted to the UFL team the DC Defenders. No did he was he? Uh? Wasn't he? What did he let go by the It was the Giants? No, No, that's the other guy. Yeah, the
running back. So Michael Wiley's not with an NFL team. It's too bad. I think he might be. I can check that. I think he has just the option to play for the AM I thinking of Steve that went to the Giants TJ djj jjjj JJ Taylor's are the Patriots Giants? Oh, there's there's been Uh we had him on the show. Oh he don't, didn't Gary Brightwell? Is he still with the Giants? I think so?
Okay, And the last thing I got tam USA basketball defeated Serbia one, five to seventy nine in an exhibition game today and United Air Emirates they kind of tearing it up, aren't they just a little bit? I mean, what do we think? I mean, Serbia's got Jokic. Yeah, I mean, I don't know how much stock you can put in these in these exhibitions. But you know they're not losing, right, They're not losing the I mean if if they lose one, people would lose their minds, right,
So they're not losing them. But what do the wins mean? You know? Are they are good? Are they that good? Are they not? I don't know what do you thinks? To you? We'll see, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Sorry, okay. I don't want to give you a better information you have before. I don't know what's stopping you now. I'll give you great information yesterday. What I'm the lid. That's all I go. Okay, okay, what else we have? Anything else? No? You know, we're just uh,
British Open starts tonight. Oh okay, yeah, I'm trying to think who's the betting favorite. Well, probably Scottie Scheffler again he always is. Bryson de Shamba is probably one of the favorites. Let me slok it up here. You've got. Scheffler is the favorite as the winner at plus five hundred. McElroy second at plus eight fifty. He was in contention last week. Xander Schoffley, Colin Marcy, who's been up there a lot. This new
guy, Ludwig aberg Oberg plus two thousand. My guy's Tommy Fleetwood. For the week, he's a plus twenty five hundred. He'son what one, two, three, four, five, six, seventy ninth favorite eight favorite. That freeth dude to do that. So I really liked. The reason I like the British Opening is because when I wake up in the morning it's on. I don't have to watch you know, Dan Patrick or Dateline or whatever. When I get up, I can get a cup of coffee and watch
some British Open. So that I think tea time start at ten thirty our time tonight, so that'll be fun and you're doing all the stuff and you have homework for me? What's your homework from yesterday? I'm still supposed to see the bill walk thirty for thirty and I'm still supposed to read the Kim Molky article. You were now, you were perfect Kim Molkey today, perfect Kim mulche today in what way? The utel beat writer? Oh, I said, Jay is back? Did you watch you listen? You watched You're
on the You're on the thread, the thread? Yeah yeah, all right, see, God, I don't know if I'm going to read that. I got I got plans. Yeah, you know, this is a time when you can just you just watch it, you read it eventually. Point is it something that would be longer, too long to read like in the bathroom? Yeah, well, if you're gonna do that, you have to go about room a lot. It's a lot, but it's very interesting because
you get an interesting view of who she is. And and there's a line or two in it that just reminds me of you because athletically remember well written, and remember it's a lot of controversial. Oh yeah, and I remember all that. I just couldn't remember if it was that Syr and if tan In terms of skating, it was. It was a pimple. It was nothing. It was nothing because it was it was more you worry about more than what it is. And it was just just a picture of her.
Yeah, you know, if she's what she is, she is what she is, then maybe she doesn't like who she is maybe or maybe she thought there was more there. Yeah, yeah, well yeah, because she threatened tossue them and all that stuff, and yeah, it was nothing. It was it was it was a burger and it was tasty, but really, yeah, okay, I'll skip the burger next. Yeah, yeah, it's it's yeah, And I probably didn't like the questions she got asked and thought, you know, not the worst, but it's not the way it always
is. So anyways, I don't know, all right, what else, Steve? You know, Yeah, I don't. I don't know. I was looking at the NFL camps. Should begin started here pretty quick, right, Yeah? Would you go in New York? There's nothing there? Right, you don't What do you do in New York? When you go have games? You go to New Jersey to watch the games? So do you do you do that? So? Yeah, so you're a fan, but you're you know, it's up to your parents because they have the money.
Right, it's like an hour. So when I went to the Final four ninety five to you probably won't even born ninety five, right, Uh, that's thirty years. Uh. The Final four ninety five is in New Jersey, but we stayed in New York. No one even knew the hell the Final Four was there because New York it's it's as so many things going on, so many things going on that Yeah, you take the bus over the bridge and then bring you back and then it was like Tuesday. I mean,
no one really give a crap. Yeah, yeah, that's why they need them in places that give a crab. Wait where did they have the Final Four in New York? Where? In New Jersey? At just at the arena at the Big but they weren't the domant stadiums by that time, and yeah in the not in Madison Square Garden in New Jersey. There's not there's not a dome stadium in New Jersey? Is there? They had a New Jersey I know that. I mean they got an arena. Uh,
isn't there the Giants? Yeah, but there's not a don't there's not a dome stadium? So where where were I'm gonna I'm going to I was on that book because by that time, weren't they were Maybe by that time they were they were not having them and no, no, they I'm pretty sure that that was that was there. Ninety five was U c l A. Uh could be ninety six, but it's ninety five. I think nine n U c l A won it. But that was in the Kingdome? Was it? Was it a regional? Was it? I wouldn't go to New
York to go to twinal four? Final four is in New York, New Jersey? Just right that google that Okay? Uh it was in ninety six, Okay, so it was in there, just in their arena then the connin Airlines arena. No, no, how big hoes your tenants? It seemed like it was huge, if I can remember correctly. Yeah, but
that's not a stadium. What uh? I thought by that time they were having them in they were a stadium to me, Yeah, they were, No, because ninety four was in Charlotte, right that that was pretty ninety five was in the Kingdome. Ninety six was then it was in East Rutherford. So God, when did they start having them in stadiums? Because that that's you know, I thought, I thought, I thought right after Kansas
City, because the year after Kansas City was in the Kingdome. I thought at that point they were not going to have final fours in anything but stadiums, so that, you know, that's let me see final four sits here we go after that larger dome stations. Uh, Okay, it was a twenty thousand that's the last time. That was the last time basketball first facility, basketball arena, we threw off the twenty thousand spectators supposed to be concluding
that was the last time. Okay, that was the last that That's what it says here in New Jersey. After that dome shaped, the facilities took over. Okay from that. From that, that was before that too, though, because ninety six was the Meadowlands. Ninety seven would have been ninety seven was in the RCA Dome. So that's when yeah, oh, that's
right. I was at that one. So that was the first one that they said, okay, oh and then and then they were having them a state where they if it was in a stadium, it was pushed up against one end. And then at some point I think it was the it was one that was at the one that was in in in Detroit at Ford Field where they started putting the court in the center. Okay, all right, I got it. Okay, okay, Well that was the last one that was in a basketball and I thought it was big. I thought it was
a bigger place. I can't remember that far obviously. Yeah, because yeah, okay, let's take a break. We're going to come back. Chrissy you knew her as Almond Lighton. We have nineteen ninety two Olympian Chrissy Perham. Hi s your lasting Perham Haram crimes is harm param nine. We're ever gonna forget it now? No I know, Hey, ninety two, this is it seem like ninety two. That is just a couple of years ago. Guys, Why why are you gonna be so ages just because we're
old dudes. We're old dudes, But this is how we keep finding each other. It's it's a blessing. Yes, part of your greatest time of your life. Oh my gosh, Yes, like I. Of course, every quadrennial the Olympics come around, and I'm like, god, it's so clear and I remember it so well, and you know, another four years have gone by, you're like, oh my god, I am so old.
But yeah, I mean it's those those a couple of years of college when I had a lot of success and then of course culminating in the Olympics like changed the whole trajectory of my life. So I'm I love it. It's the best. Did you get juiced uff this time? You know when they're when they're coming up, or you start paying attention to you know who's who and stuff like that, are you Oh my god? Yes? But every every year at the Olympic Trials. So I actually texted, I know
a name you guys will probably be familiar with Kellas Sanders. I texted her maybe the week of Olympic Trials starting for swimming, and I'd had this really, really, really intense dream where I was seated second going into finals in the hunter freestyle and I was in lane five and I ended up getting seventh and not making the team, and like I woke up in a cold sweat. So I mean, I don't know if it ever goes away, like the sale of watching the people make the team, a little bit of heartache,
a little bit of sadmus. But yeah, Olympic trials and the Olympics are awesome. So let me ask you a dumb question, because we cover elite athletes all the time in college and in pro and you're you're obviously one of those elite athletes. How do you become an elite athlete? Let's say you're good? What do you can you just? Are you just good? Uh? How do you get to the next level? Yeah? What pushes you next? Yeah? So, first of all, see, there are
no dumb questions that are just dumb people who ask questions. I'm just sitting you know, I adore you, So I think, yeah, if you're good, but you don't have the resources, or you have a coach that maybe isn't prepared to raise you up, or you are in a team sport and your team isn't very deep. I mean, what you know, being
great isn't going to do you any good. So for me, like when people want to understand kind of like what it's like to be an elite athlete or how to get to an elite level, and I would say this with being a violinist, with being a singer, you know anything, you want to be the greatest Finnish carpenter, if you aren't surrounded by people who want to push you and raise your level of success, if you maybe aren't mature enough at the time to kind of respect the growth process, you know all
of those things. Yeah, then you know, the world is filled with talented people who aren't doing anything that reminds me of So I'm sure you were you know these people, uh and you probably were teammates of this people have the talent but didn't want to be coached. Oh yeah, and and and what's said is I am very close with people who were so coachable and wanted to please and worked so hard and didn't have the talent level to reach that
level of success. So it cuts both ways. Yeah, no, I hear, I hear that, because we see like in some of these individual sports, like a golfer, right, you see, how did that guy get or that person gets so good? Right when you know, I mean you know what, I've remember some people that you know, I covered a lot years ago. But you know, we're playing at Pima, playing at the Evane he said, Okay, they're pretty good, but I'll give you a name. Now we talk about all DeAndre Aiden. Okay, he's tall,
he's good, but he's good. He's only when he wants to be. Yeah, you know, but they or they were, they were kind of average in college and all of a sudden they're superstars in in you know, in the in the major leagues or whatever. Trevor Hoffman, he was a shortstop, and he was a pretty good shortstop. He had a great arm, and all of a sudden, the guy's in the Hall of Fame,
in the Baseball Hall. And I think like it was the magic So clearly, clearly these are amazingly talented athletes, right, you know, And and pretty much I would say that there are there diamond doesn't At any college level in sports, you're going to find talented people. What what was the magic sauce for them? Being you know, maguration maybe sort of someone like Trevor, like someone putting eyes on him saying, you know, I think I think he can probably be a pretty good reliever, Like what do you
think about that? And and Trevor was mature enough at the time to be like I'd love to give that a shot. Let me try that out. You know, Yeah, there's you know that kind of luck. Sometimes it's made right. Sometimes it really is just plain dunblock, Like I don't think
that you and I would be talking. And if we didn't have Frank Bush show up in you know, nineteen eighty nine, Well, I was gonna ask that when when did when did the switch come on for you that you thought, not only can I be a good college swimmer, I can be an Olympian? When did you? When did that realization happen? And how
did that happen? So my freshman and sophomore years were I was an All American on the swim team, and I was probably going to four or five packses a week out of ten, like, not dedicated at all, not motivated, certainly, not respectful of the gifts that I had been given. And Frank and I had a little come to Jesus and so he like basically told me, you need to take two weeks away, you know, like I might kill you. So take two weeks away and we'll come back and
have a conversation. And I about a week in, I woke up one morning and I was like, man, is this you want to live your life, like is this the kind of athlete you want to be? Like? Are you proud of yourself? You look in the mirror and you're like, oh yeah, I'm satisfied. So I called Frank and I was like, hey, I'd love to have a meeting with you. I feel like I had an epiphany. And I came and I had a conversation with him, and he like nodded and looked at his watch and I was like,
okay, well practice starts in amount and a half hour. And I remember being so angry, like, dude, I'm telling you, like I'm going to be a star for you, like you know, well, of course I was the girl who cried wolf, like you know, the proof is in the pudding. So I spent literally like the next ten weeks. I never missed a practice morning night. I was crushing the weight room, I was crushing everything in the pool. And that was the summer I won my
first national championship. I mean it sounds that easy. I'm clearly like there were other things in play. But if you really really try hard, like things will change. Will you become a national champion? That's not for me to say, but you know, half assing you know, excuse my French. Half assing everything certainly is only going to give you half of what you probably could be earning. I also know you and maybe a wrong and bear
with these questions because I'm just a dumb question askers. You're type A and kind of crazy a little bit, so that helps. That helps for this, It does. Oh yeah, like I would, you know, I want to rip your heart out when I'm playing pick a ball mouth. Yeah, like that's really hard for it to That's hard for you know, to temper when you're young, you know, like getting kicked out of basketball games and fouling out like half of every basketball game when I was in high school
and stuff. But you can turn that into something that's more internal and not external. Where I never really felt like I was competing with the people that I was swimming against. Those were my friends. I wanted to win because that was like what was inside my body, you know. And I do think you can hone that, but I don't think that you can. I don't think you can teach that happened to Chrissy Parham nineteen ninety two Olympian Arizona
national champion. So Chrissy the Olympics are coming up, they're just a few weeks away. Think back to your time getting ready for the Olympics. What were the last couple of weeks, like you remember, what were you doing, What were you not doing right to make sure that you were ready. What's the preparation from here on out over say the last two three weeks before you start competing. So something really different this year, and they've done it
a couple times since. In nineteen ninety two, we had Olympic trials in March and then the Olympics where like I swam July thirty, so so there was like a big window. We didn't go straight from trials to art, straight to a camp to you know, straight to the Olympic forever. So it was a little bit different. So between March and July for me, things like no more playing pickup ball at Bardown Gym. You know, like we're not gonna do that anymore. We're we don't need a you know,
busted wrist or whatever. We're gonna we're gonna pay a little bit more attention to you know, how you're gonna taper without me around because back in the old days, like your coach didn't get to travel with you the way they do now. So some of the preparation is different in like timing and all that stuff whatever, but but some of it's the same. You want to stay healthy, you want to be rested, you want to be eating right,
you want to enjoy the process. You know, you're not going to see very many athletes like You're gonna see serious faces, just like you do if it's you know, the World Series or it's the super Bowl, you're gonna see serious faces. You're also going to see people that are out there like this is what I do, man, Like this is what I made for. I'm gonna love it and I'm gonna have a really good time when I'm doing it. So I think a lot of it was the physical,
the Hayes in the in the barn. It's the mental. It's not letting the pressure and the and the build up and all the excitement like get you distracted. I can't remember the opposition back in ninety two, maybe the Chinese women, But was there when you've gotten there, when you got into the pool that were getting ready to pull do were you thinking, oh gosh, she's tough, but I'm still gonna kick her ass. Were there people that you thought like that, or you just said I am oom and I'm gonna
I'm gonna win. Yeah. I never really got super into like who my competition was. But by the time I went to the Olympics, I had already been ranked number one in the world, so like I did feel like it was mine to lose, which you know, I got second to a
Chinese athlete. It's suspected doper. So like I feel like caveat that sometimes without trying to sound like surly Shirley Babyshas or whatever, but you you know, you have to, Like I don't think that there are very many athletes that you're giving respect to the people that you're performing against, but that's not the measure. Like I don't think Steph Curry is out there like, oh
I wonder if I'm a better shooter than you know what I mean. Like I don't think Angel Reese is worried, like how many double doubles she just put under her belt, you know, like fifteen straight. Like she's out there just doing her thing and loving it and that's what's making her successful. Wow. Okay, I'm gonna ask you a very unfair question. Okay, this is we see. This is one of those you know, who's your
favorite kid? Which one's your favorite kid? So you want a golden relay, actually two gold in relays, right because you were Yeah, and then you won a silver in an individual event, which one kind of feels better to you. So I hope this doesn't sound like a cop out. Friend, the Deadly Relay where we won the gold and broke the world record, like I am, I'm a team girl, like the relays were my most favorite thing about being an athlete, just like that's why I loved basketball,
So that one is really special. I got to do that with my teammates. It was so exciting to break the world record. We crushed it like gold medal and stuff. However, I do want to say winning the silver when I quote should have won the gold, end quote, it was a really good reminder that you can do everything right and sometimes it's not going to end the way you want it to. And that's okay too. Okay, that doesn't feel like a cop out, No, no, it doesn't.
So do the kids today. The athletes today amaze you, Oh my god, the women's swimming in America, the women's collegiate group that you know from Virginia, the young high school girls that made the team from Carmel, Indiana. You know, our brother made it too. Like they are they are such experts in their sport in they're in their like talented areas. Like I love watching people like Lily King, I love watching the Walsh sisters. I I mean, it's just it's breathtaking, Kay Douglas, Like who is it
who wins the hundred freestyle, wins the two hundred? I am, but also wins the tune of breas Like this is like someone like Kenny Lawson definitely, you know, the most amazing one of the most amazing athletes probably to come out eve being really great in two sports. This would be like being a really great baseball pitcher, but you're also a great golfer, but you also swim and dive, Like I don't like that, doesn't none of those
would go together? Yeah? Interesting? And yet there she is. She's like crushing breaking a world record, an American record, which is amazing. So let me ask you, so, if you swim against them with your time and their time is it are you far behind? No? And that's really funny that you are mentioning that because I have a friend who I swam with in college. He still is in Phoenix and we are very close. We you know, are talking swimming all the time, or swimming, basketball,
baseball, whatever. We love talk about sports. And he texted me when when the world record was broken in the hunter fully at trials and he was like, hey, what was your time? And I was like, oh my god, like she crushes me, Like, you know, I went like a fifty eight something or whatever, And like two minutes later he's texting back, he goes, you would have made semi finals with that.
Wow, are you kidding me? So, like, I'm not anywhere close to winning that ship has obviously passed, but you know, my time so I could throw down, so it makes me feel good. Yeah, okay, well, yeah, great to have you on the show. This is fun. Yeah, guys, I love talking shop. You know, I love talking sports with you guys. Yeah. No, no, great to have you. It's always good to talk to too. Yeah. Time to Christy. She is fun, high, strong, is all heck. And the thing about it is, I think I think it takes one of one of those people to be who they are, Yeah,
because they're elite athletes. Yeah, you have to have kind of a sense of urgency and everything you do right, because again, the difference between the great athlete who makes some thing of that and the great athlete who doesn't is is the mental aspect of it. Right. Who's willing to do the prep, Who's willing to do the work, no question, Who's willing to uh, you know, sacrifice all those things get in order to in order to give you a name right now, and I think I think the world has
been of a player here, one of the best collideriefs. Yep, how do you have that Damon Sadoma attitude? He would have been in the league for twelve fifteen years, right right, kicking the crap out of the committy. It was, Yeah, he was, he was. He was kind of a little bit laid back. Yeah, he didn't have that sense of urgency that you need to have, right you know. And the passion maybe is a word. Yeah, and that counts, man, Yeah, it does. And then and then there's son, Oh, got a call,
take this call. Hi, you're on the air, Andine on the ball the afternoon you got It's just your buddy, gave all you got, Dave. Where do you been, man, it's been a long time. I'm just trying to apply for zerobo conservation positions at in Fresno. Okay, So I'm just trying. I'm just busy trying the trying to pursue a job in wildlife conservations. Did you did you you finished school? Did you finish school?
Finally, so I decided not to go to Arizona because because I don't want to like get to call it debt and moving from present, moving from Preston to Arizona, it's probably definitely gonna be a big money muncher. And I don't know how much University of Arizona is charging for over for how does state students go to the University Arizona. So on the like I said, I'm a huge wildcatsan, but you gotta be realist. All right, we'll get best luck on all that. So what's on your mind today? Just
kind of want to be us with you guys. Honestly I said this before. Arizona needs to win to get the recruiting momentum, and they need to they need to win every single game, and so that's what I need to say. Well, that's a lot the You know, the Kansas State game is gonna be a huge game, right, yeah, you game is gonna be even bigger. The UCF game is probably gonna be on the verge of
an upset. So yeah, So, Gabe, the thing that we've been talking about is seven and a half wins over seven and a half, over eight and a half. Uh, you'll probably say over eight and a half. I don't. I don't do the betting because I don't bet. I don't bet. I don't understand betting. But I think us as Arizona fans will be happy for a nine wins to loss. But you gotta you gotta strike with with the on the You gotta strike when the getting is good.
Yeah. Yeah, I think you do not need to play stupid games and win stupid product is you gotta you gotta have the initiative. You gotta be like a Napoleon Bonaparte. Okay, what what record? What's the most wins that would be a disappointment to you know what? I'm trying to get a you know, would you be happy with eight and four? Uh? Probably not with seven and five. You probably would be with nine and three.
Where do they have to get to for you to feel like this was a good season with all the expectations and stuff that are out there for this team. I will be happy with an eight and four record. I will go I'll be happy with a nine and two record. I'll be even more happy if Arizona can make a run and go in the national championship. Knock on, would But I don't think a seven and five would be would be great
right to involved motivating the Arizona sad base. Like I said a couple of weeks ago, it was nineteen ninety nine, Arizona was on the top of the moon and it basically went crashing down. And in twenty fifteen the same old, same old thing happened, which is when not the Arizona Wildcouts were basically Arizona widely the coyote. Yeah, so real quick, Gabe, how
does the kid out of friends though? And you're about twenty something, right, twenty eightish, I think if I can remember quickly falling over the UV. So, I have four friends from my hat from my high school. So I went to Central High School. One of my friends, his name was Nick Wilson. He was the number twenty eight, was the running back, and my other friends were at Devon Brewer. He was kind of like a backup. Another person that went to Arizona was Ke Wilson, and another
person was Shariff Williams. And and they went to the University of Arizona, so and so yeah, yeah, and my other friend they went to and and my other friend that I graduated, who who was on the who played football, So I played football with them and another friend I that we know. His name is his name is Smallwood and he went to the school, the school up north. But I don't root for them. So you can calm down, you can make you can take a big breath. So I'm
I'm still rocking the American College, the Red, White and Blue. Good all right, Kate, thanks for calling, man, appreciate it. We'll talk again. I know anytime. Beer down Arizona, go cass Let's get him. It's good to hear from game. Okay. Since I was looking at the wind, total is still eight on draft kings, probably still seven and a half one. I don't think anything's changed. I was looking at the odds for the Big twelve Championship. You've got utadd three plus three twenty
is it to win it? To win the Pack to win the Big twLF Championship. Take this call, Hi, you're on the air and on on the ball. J done, Don, what's up? How are you? I'm good man. I guess first first, okay, we're having a hard time. We're having a hard time hearing you. You're looking a chamber echo chamber. This much better? Yes, okay, first things first, keep the Raiders out of your mouth. I was trying to I was trying to call in yesterday. But our guys in the league that that was their lifelong
dream to play for the Raiders once again. I wanted to try really hard to be a Raiders fan because they were going to be you know, I don't really care about the Cards. I thought I could become a Raiders fan with them being in Vegas, and I just haven't been able to turn that button, you know, push that button and hit it. So they got to figure it out. They got to start winning and winning in the playoffs and stuff like that. But you know, because it's hard, man,
it made it. Being a Raiders fan has has made us a tough, resilient group. I considered a football game and not screaming yell yeah, because the bottom is going to fall out at some point. Yeah yeah. But what I've been wanting to bring up was I was looking at Kansas's basketball schedule last year for last season, uh huh, and the come the rhythm the Pac twelve schedule always had We're gonna lose that, we lose that, Yeah, we totally lose that. There's gonna be games all different days of the
week. Yeah, Kansas started on a Saturday, then they played Wednesday, then they played Saturday, then they played Tuesday, then they played Saturday, then they played Monday. And I think you're gonna hear a lot more complaining from the people that were complaining that the Big Twelve Championship wasn't gonna be in
in Vegas. Yeah. Yeah, they're gonna be whining and crying. I never know when the game is. Yeah, there's no travel partners like like, uh, you know the way the Big Twelve said up right, just geographically. Yeah, so there's no travel partners where you go and you know, ASU plays the team that you play, you know, two days later. Not No, there's none of that. It's it's scattered all over the
place. There's gonna be games all different days of the week. And that's because of what we have, back to back road games with West Virginia and Direction of Florida. Yeah, and ones on Tuesday, and then the next game is not till the next Saturday. Yeah, you're gonna stay out there all that time to not have to come home, or it's gonna be interesting,
Doug. This is when the charters take effect, right right. But now it's you know one, you'd like to think that the schedule makers will figure that out, right, don't don't send Arizona to the East Coast and back to back games or send somebody from the East Coast to you know, to here. But since they nobody thought maybe we should schedule Arizona and Kansas twice in this first year, nobody thought that was smart. So who knows what they're gonna do with the schedule. But yes, be prepared for games
to be all different nights. It's not gonna be Thursday Saturday or Thursday Sunday anymore. Yeah, it's it's gonna be crazy. Yeah, it's gonna be nuts. It's gonna take some time to get used to that because the the Thursday Saturday rid on more the Thursday Sunday if it was Arizona U C. L A. I mean, you just had that rhythm of the basketball season. It was a lot like it was a lot like the high school seasons where they played like Tuesday and Friday nights. Yeah, you know, and
you had that rhythm. And now it's gonna be what I thought the game was tomorrow, Oh no tonight. Yeah, it'll be funny, it'll be interesting. To see how Arizona fans absorbed that. But again it's because ESPN wants games on, you know, every night of the week, and that's that's that's all about. So thanks Tony, Hey, take care guys. All right, thanks a much, thanks for the call. No, he's right, I mean that's gonna be odd for you know, because that rhythm
has been since it became the Pac ten right, right. This year was kind of odd too because they did to go for one game and then come back. Do you remember do you remember the I know this was in my first year covering basketball, but every week there was one trip was Sunday or Saturday Monday. Remember those It was always a Monday night. That's because like when Arizona uh the UCLA, Arizona's two games that they won here in the bc LA, that was a Saturday Monday. The usc game was on a
Monday, the Spaghetti Yes. And I remember the first first year I covered basketball the u c l A, the l A trip was a Saturday Monday. Yeah. Well, by the time I started covering in ninety one, it was it was Thursday, Saturday, Thursday, Saturday, and Thursday Sunday, right, And that was great because you get to spend the weekend in the night city get away. My first year, the Bay Area trip was a Thursday Sunday, so that was cool. I had an actra day of
San Francisco restaurant, big time Manchoo all day, all day. Yeah, no, it was fun. It was fun, a lot of fun. And then moving from Stanford to Calier back but it was real quick. I was going through the odds here. So you top plus three twenty to win the big twelve of Kansas State next to plus three eighty. So those are Arizona's first two, you know, the their thirty fourth games of the season.
Arizona is plus one thousand. In between, You've got Kansas, Oklahoma State at seven fifty, Kansas at nine hundred, then Central Florida, Iowa State in Arizona all at plus one thousand, one thousand, one hundred bucks to win eleven hundred about. No, that's a it's a good price. Yeah, a little scratch ten bucks out one hundred and ten. Yeah, yeah, that's worth that thing's worth it. I've already got a bunch of money on the over over eight gap. You're not hearing this, gay,
Yeah, yeah, you's not we gotta go. Yeah, we gotta go. I gotta go see my lid. All right, thanks Henry for you do a great job. Hey, nice job, Henry. All right, we'll be back tomorrow. Would love to take your calls when we get back. Five to zero, four one, six, seventy, four to forty. We're just making it through the summer man, talking football and all kinds of other things. So come back tomorrow. We'll see you.
