This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and jagon Zalece on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen, powered by Nova Insurance Services. He's sure your most prized possessions, kat z R two SAD and iHeart Radio Station. Hey, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to I on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, He's jagon Zalece. No kids for a while, No kids, man, what are we gonna do? Steve screw up? We just gotta hit all the right buttons and hit all the right button.
Welcome to Wednesday Show. Everybody you want to call in, please do. That's a lot of fun for us to hear from you, guys. Five two o four four one six seventy four forty kind of have you checked the roster? Did you? Did you purpose check the roster when you asked for the roster? No? No, I was just checking because I was just
checking something for one of our breaking news. Oh okay, because yesterday we kind of fell into something, right, we were talking about deep because yeah, I said, you know, hey, let's talk about I said the kid I couldn't remember the Johnson guy, Yeah, Johnson. And then somebody said Harris. Yeah, so the Harris kid, right, former the son of the former, and Harris and his brother had just come played here, right, And I said that, well, what's up with him? How
come he he hasn't been playing? Well, he's the third string guy. Right then we come to find out you checked to see I was looking for respects and stuff, and he's not on the rocks and not on the roster. And then he's not on the roster. So we talked a couple of text a couple of people. People checked out, and uh lo and behold the go as. You can't pushed to something that he's not on the roster,
and nobody was talking about it, you know. And and actually you know when I went when I went looking for him on the roster, I just looked at the roster and he wasn't there. So then I googled his name, and you know, his page that's supposed to be comes up, and you get that page you're looking for no longer example. Yeah, so he has gone, right, I couldn't remember. And you know how this
is, I don't know. You don't like recruiting, right, you don't like recruiting, never have neither of I and it's because of this and no, this Harris is just an example, because they get all these guys, great guys, great kids, three star, four stars, you know, in a zone and everybody has hope and not just just just an example. They come here and everyone's excited because he's son and he had he had and then he doesn't pan out right or just doesn't work right. So all that
excitement means nothing. It means nothing. And then there's also the you know, the pressure on the kid, right. I'm sure he transferred here from Colorado. I'm sure he came here not thinking that he was going to get, you know, extra consideration because he was Sean Harris's kid. But just that you know, he's playing where his dad played, his dad has you know, has a legacy here, and his brother played and his brother his brother was here too. Does that put pressure on the kid? You know?
Does he maybe not perform the way he would if he was at some school where nobody really knew where he was and he could just play, you know, And so it's unfortunate, but you know, it sounds like he's gone. So it's like, I mean, look, he's a physical specimen. He's he's an athlete. He can play football somewhere. The question is where would that be. Yeah, so, and it kind of goes to show you the quality of player Arizona's chasing now, right, Arizona was real
happy to get him when they got it. Sure, and now he doesn't really fit there really isn't a place for it, or you can't beat out the guys he just bought in, Right, So it's just well, good luck to good luck to him. We haven't nothing official obviously, but he's not on the website or he's not probably probably won't hear anything till we have. Our next press conference will be Monday. They gave us our schedule.
Man, that's gonna be tight for us. By the way, Monday press conferences for Jetfish are one thirty The only last about half twenty minutes through him. Yeah, but by the time we get to the studio cut clips, we're gonna be rushing to get get the news conference stuff on our show. But what we'll do it, we'll get it done, right. Okay.
So there's that and so much more. There's one it's we're kind of dark from them this week, right, Well, availability and availability this week we won't get again jet to Monday. The schedule, we'll get the coordinators on Tuesdays. They will get jed one more time on Thursday. Yeah, okay, so we'll see what happens. Yeah, okay, what else is going on? Anything else going on? Volleyball starts in earnest and the soccer has
already started a little stuff. I was I was gonna hold this for breaking news, but since we're here, apparently cal Stanford are back on the table for the ACCY. They've opened the discussions again. Also, throwing in SMU might be a possibility, So there might be fifteen. They might get to, uh, eighteen teams because they've got fifteen right now, well fifteen County Notre Dame. You know, Notre Dame is not quote unquote in the league
to win a championship. But they have like an agreement. They play games in the league. They have a vote on whether or not a team can join the league. The last time they held a strap hole on this, uh, they needed they need twelve out of fifteen to to approve a new you know expansion. They got eleven votes and the votes they didn't get were Clemson, North Carolina and North Carolina State, and I can't remember who the
other one is. Yeah, but there were four. So they sounds like you're just reading between the lines that they may have flipped one or on the verge of flipping one to get these guys guys in the league. Then if that happens, then the PAC twelve is really dead because the only thing left would be Oregon State Washington State, because as of now, were the latest we heard on them was that the cal Stanford organ State, Washington Stay.
We're gonna trying to figure out a way to rebuild the league. You don't bring some more teams, it's gonna be tough. But if if those guys, you know, high tail it for the ACC, that's it. The PAC twelve is dead. Sell your heb you got a lot of PAC tw ten and twelve stuff coming your way. Yeah, some interesting comments today. You know, I watched stan Patrick every day. They're in they're in uh, they're in Dublin this week because they're gonna they're there for the Dame Navy
Games. So they're doing their show from Dublin, which is kind of weird. It's four in the afternoon over there when it's over here. But anyways, they because it's no over dame stuff. They had Jack Swarbrick, the athletic director at no order dame. So, okay, you see that part. He got into the conversation. They said, you know, what do you you know? They ask, what do you think of what's happened? Uh, you know college athletics and Swarbrick didn't he make He didn't men Sworties.
He called it a complete disaster. Yeah, and then he said everybody's to blame. He said, you know what, you want to blame anyone of a number of people. You want to blame the schools, You want to blame the networks, you want to blame conference commissioners, or you want to blame whatever. He said, We are all to blame. He said, me included. So let me ask you what what's the bad part of it? Okay, So Twiline for what the expansion for the payments for it?
Is it right here? He said? This is what I say. He said, everybody in the industry has to take responsibility here. I'm not excluding myself from that. The decision making lost its way in terms of the focus on the student athlete and what's primarily best for them. But we are where we are and we have to try and make cocually said, they lost sight of the fact that this is college athletics and it should be about the
athlete. Okay, but if you ask the student athletes, now give me Caleb Williams or or those guys, do you think they'd say the same thing, given that they're getting a lot of money. Well, both the football players and basketball players are okay with it because the travel and all and the money that you know, the travel is not a big deal to them because they charter. The money is great for them. They're happy with it.
But what about Jordan guys, Yeah, so you're talking. You know, we talked when we talked to so they you know, the football teams and the basketball teams make up a small percentage of the overall number of athletes. So it's this little group of people that are going to be okay. You've got this big group of athletes and programs that are not going to be okay with this. And he's basically saying, we lost our way. Yeah, heyah, the person who's going to try to call in, please call in,
because we're just talking. We're not paying attention to the phone. Just give us a call and keep an eyeway. Have f minutes. No, okay, so let's assume that's maybe twenty percent of the total population of the student athletes. They didn't know this when this first started, and before they're ever thinking about payment. I'm thinking it's never gonna work for one reason, and this is probably wrong. If you're gonna pay the guys, you have
to everybody. You have to pay everybody. Where are they going to get the money from? Well, exactly exactly? And I guess they found the solution, but it's not great. It's not a good solution. Yeah, we have a caller. Y're on the air and I on the ball. Hey, Jay, I see it for Richard. How you doing fine? Thanks for calling Richards. Hey, something's got to be done about this running back thing. Oh, the running backs in America are getting ripped off.
You know, just one running back in the backfield is a rip off. I mean, Jon, I think it's the first first round running back to go on quite a while. So I really think we need to require teams that have two running back acts in the backfield at all time. You know, you can still put them out there as a receiver, as a flanker. But you need two running backs in the backfield at the same time. If you score a touchdown running for twenty yards out, you get an extra
point. If your office score runs up, if you get two hundred and fifty or sixty yards rushing, you get an extra two points. You know, if you're running the wishbone offense, you score a touchdown, you get eight points for something like that. I mean, this is ridiculous. The best football players are sitting on the bench in many cases. Richard, you are another commissioner of the XFL. I want to be like the commissioner of
the four point shot at the NBA. Richard, just just think of all the all the stuff that all the all the hoops and the and the and the opposition to taking away the shift in baseball, it's kind of simple. It's like to to mandate how you play the game. That's gonna be a little tough. But I hear you, I understand. I understand the problem. I'm saying that you've got to have two running backs in the backfield. I'm not telling you you can't pass the football if you can pass it to
a running back. But let's face it, football was made to be a power game of running. And those were the most powerful running teams are running games. They won the games. Near we invented the forward pass, and then it got out of control and now it's the great equalizer. And you know it's ridiculous. But the running backs are being ripped off. That's all I'm saying. I mean, yeah, I hear you, I hear they're.
Yeah, they're they're they're undervalue, all right, Richard. Sounds like a call from I know that will happen, but it sounds like a call from a guy from Oklahoma exactly that whist going against David Adams running the hand, David Adams looking for exactly he could have been a great Wishball running back. I'm on with Freddy Shams here. You know, it's I mean that that is an issue, but it's a matter of how do you how do you fix that? Right? You know that, how do you fix that?
Again? I mean, really I liked it when he said that. My first thought was the shift in baseball. You know, baseball found a strategy that that worked for them. They were using it and then people said it's wrecking the game, so they took it away. The summer kind of thing. The shift I thought, I do think it was because it's it's all your analytics. This guy hits it night percent of the time to the left side. Right. It became so hard to get a base hit that
people just started hitting sweet. It was either home run or strike out. I do think it was wrecking the game. Look, and the fix was not a horrible fix. They're still lining up a dean fielder right up the gut. You know, when you're watching a baseball game and you're you know, you've got the shot from behind the picture and the ball goes up the middle where it was not it was a hit. Every time there's a there's
almost always a guy that it's not a hit anymore. That's scouting. I mean, that's scouting, you know, And that's okay if if you want, if you want to do that, fine, But the way they were doing it where they were head, you know, just two guys on the left side, everybody else to the right that I think that was wrecking the game. Yeah, no, I I hear you, like you know.
As far as the running back, I mean, well, I thought he was gonna say because they're not being valued, well, but they're not and that's that's it, and and that in a way, that's his point is that because you don't have running backs are no longer important. So a guy like b Jean Robinson or Bijean Robinson, you know he's gonna play what three three four years? Look at his career right very quickly. You know he might not get to a second contract. I hate to say that, but
he you know, he's got a three year contract. That's a rookie contract. At the end of those three years, if they beat the hell out of him, okay, we'll go get another guy. So well, look what the NBA has turned into. Used to be back to the basket big man and you move the ball around and you score. Now it's it's not doesn't resemble anything you get. You get a guy with the ability of DeAndre Ayton and he's just kind of a third or fourth guy on the team.
He's worthless and us he can't throw, you know, shoot the three. All the sports are like this, and it's it gets back to analytics and every sport. You know that there's so much there's so much information in every sport. People are figuring out way the best ways to do things. I blame Steve Kerr. He's win the change the game. I love the way they play. It's it's I love the way they play. It's basketball.
Arizona is a is a mini Golden State. They move the ball, must run around, get the ball where it's supposed to be, get a rebound, and go to the other side to throw up a shot. Would you prefer that over Sean's office? No, no, no, no, you wouldn't. Well you'd prefer yes, Yeah, I'm totally preferred over Shant. Would more enjoyable to watch. It's way fun to watch it. I had fun watching their game in Israel because the way they were running up and down
the floor. Because against a terrible team, but when you saw the way they were playing, and that was entertaining to watch them do what they do. That's fun about Its changed nothing. They're saying, the same team they're doing and you know, they bring in you guys, they plug them in and they're doing the same thing all over again. And I guess I'm having a problem with that. But I think it's a little I hear I hear
chard Richard is saying about the running back. But you know, I sure had fun watching rich Rod throw sling the ball all over the field for four for five seasons. You know, get the ball, roll it down, score in thirty seconds to come back and play some defense. I had fun watching that and so but I get it. You know when you see guys, a guy like Ezekiel Elliott who was all everything for however many years, and all of a sudden he can't find a place to play. He did
get signed, but how much is he really going to play? So no, I I hear it. It's a I don't know that you can mandate any change in that thought. All right, let's take a break. We're
gonna come back. Ball with Steve Rivera and Jacob Salaz on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. Hey, welcome back to One on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty on stew very he's chickens also, And now I would if we have Brian Howell from the Boulder Dandy camera. Brian, how are you doing? I'm good. How are you guys going? We're fine. I wanted to we wanted to check into you see if you're still alive one and now things are going.
But I had a specific question. I saw a press conference maybe ten days ago, and Dion looks are think in your direction and talk to you when you have a conversation and says you did something and he didn't like or something.
No, it was well, it was the day before that press stopperence a former call out a quarterback who was now at Miami's Ohio and tweeted out that he got his waiver denied to be able to play this year to the second time transfer, and so I kind of quote tweeted that instead that you know, if they're going to allow coaches to new coaches to get rid of players, they had to allow those players to play immediately. And a whole
bunch of people thought that I was thinking a shot at coach Prime. I came back and said, this is nothing about coach Prime or even the guy. I'm just making a statement about the answer of LA And so Coach Bryan looked at me and when I went to ask the question and said, you've been involved in some controversy. How do you like it? You how I
feel every day? So you know that's really what was And yeah, okay, well so you know, I fair you said you still really haven't had a ton of contact with him just because you just don't put well, what are your you know now that he's you know, he's been in camp. You guys they're getting ready for the start of the season. What's the atmosphere been like with him, you know, running the show over there? Is it? Is it as much of a circus as it was when you first
got there? How are things? No, I think it's pretty much settled into like football and preseason camp mode. I mean, uh, it's different in this. You know, you've got people showing up to don't know, the show up. Torrette Lewins was here last week, Michael Irvan was here today. Uh, you know you have guys like that have to show up
and visit. But it's really been pretty much like a lot. Like most camps, it's just there's more media covering the team now, so I think they're really in football Mohden and just kind of getting ready for the season, so more media. But is he accessible? Does he have Does he talk to you guys? No, not really he has. Let's say, I think today we didn't have access today, but I think today was practice seventeen. He's talked twice in false camp. The last one was that press time
as your reference, which was twelve days ago. So I think we're gonna talk to him one more time before the TCU games. So all in all, we'll get him about three times. It's about the month of August, which you know, typically we'll get the head coach three four times a week. So it's definitely a little bit different. So let me ask you, what is your papers expectations of you coming the team given you have little access.
Well, we don't have asked him, but we they do give us an assistant coach every day and then at least one player most days betimes we get two players, so we have content is just not coming from him, and you know, and honestly a lot of a lot of cases it comes on the better to talk of the because because they're more dialed into their specific position groups than maybe he is as a headman overseeing the whole thing. Okay,
well I was going to ask you that. I mean, you know, is it better because sometimes you do get more and better information from the other guys. But is Deon is he looking like a head football coach or is he still a little bit more on the celebrity side of it, you know what I'm saying. I mean, does he feel that you know, you've worked with other football coaches and their and their football coaches. They look like football coaches, they act like football coaches. Where's where is don that
on that whole level? Yeah, he's definitely that's football time. He's definitely a football coach. And the one thing with this team is that, you know, we don't get to watch practice, so we haven't been around him. But because of all the social media stuff they have going on, we watch a lot of practice every day on YouTube, and you know, there's a lot of video of him, and so he is coaching. I mean,
he gets out there and he's getting on the guys. The other day, he middle of practice didn't like what he was doing or what they were doing, and he just stopped it right in the middle and he made the entire team run seven one yard dashes, you know, and then get back to practice. So you know, he's definitely the disciplinary and he's running the show and you'll see him, you know, coaching the dbs, coaching the receivers, things like that. So he's definitely in football mode one side of
the football. He did something a few maybe a week or show ago, and you were well aware of this where there was a fight or scuffle in the end zone with a couple of the defensive offense and he encouraged for people to fight. I have never ever seen that anywhere. And we were talking about a coach show we covered here, is they prevent that because it kind of gives you that thought of you're gonna get penalties if that happens in the real, real life, real game. What did you make of it?
Yeah, I think it was more so I know he I think he specifically said if one person fights, we all fight. And I think what he truly meant, and talking to people that know him and close to him, is it's really don't walk away from your teammates when they're when there's a scuffle, you get in there and back them up, and it's more not necessarily fighting, but back each other up via team and don't walk away from your teammates. It's may be in a fight. So it's more of more of
that type of thing. I don't think he wants a brawl or anything like that. I think it's more of just, you know, back your guys up. So overall, how do you think it's going with them? Do you have any sense of it? He said, you don't get to see much of practice. Have you had any scrimmages to watch? What does it
look like? Uh, you know in terms of on the field. Yeah, we literally they have not given us one minute of practice to watch, so we haven't seen any of it other than on the YouTube videos, which you know, they look good on YouTube because they're going to edit out and make it look good. But I will say Shore Standards is a legit quarterback and he's gonna make a big difference for this team. They have those jet playmakers on offense with Dylan Edwards, Travis Hunter, Xavier we Were, Jimmy
Hollen, guys like that. They have legit playmakers. They're going to be better offensively and defensively. I think that they've got some playmakers as well. The biggest concern for me is depth. They don't have a ton of it, but they're starting units. I think you're pretty solid. I talked about this all the time and there was only fans here are liking what they see. Two years ago they went one in the eleven whatever it was. They
want five games this year. Last year five and seven. I see Colorado. I'm not sure if they went't five, but they're gonna make a great progression given the situation because the talent. Can you really talk about the talent increase that they've had. Yeah, it's significant, and it's you know, you go to the guys I just mentioned. I mean, and it starts
with quarterback. I mean, Colorado's quarterbacking has been a trocious last two seasons, and they have not had a quarterback drafted in the NFL since Coy Detmer in nineteen ninety eight. So it's been a very long time since, sayid NFL caliber quarterback steer standards is that and so, uh, number one, you've got a quarterback, you can play it. You can compete at this level in college football. So I think that's significantly better. And his weapons
are very good. I mean I will see what they're like on the offensive lines, but they're very deep of running back, they're very deeper receiver. So he's got plenty of weapons. They're gonna I think, just a lot of fun to watch Offensively. It's still still a lot of excitement around the fans. Uh, you know, do they sell a ton of season tickets? And because we saw what happened with the spring game, so you know, how's how's the fan base looking at all this right now? Yeah,
they're just amp duff and ready to go. I mean, they sold out their entire lotment of season tickets in April. The last time they had done it I think it was twenty some years ago, and they did it in August, so they did it quicker than they've ever done the first time in a couple of decades. They've already sold out a couple of games. I imagine the entire season is going to be sold out and that's never happened around here. So this fan base is super excited and ready to go. You
know, you mentioned working with working with the staff. You know who, who's the guy on the staff who are the key guys on the staff that you think are gonna, you know, help him be a good head coach. But also, you know, coach the guys you know on the field, you know his coordinators. I'm assuming, but who are these guys? Yeah, I mean Sean Lewis, the offensive coordinator, has been the head coach at Kent State the last five years and he left that job to come
here. You know, he's obviously been head He's got that experience there. He's been a big time coordinator at some places, and uh, you know, he did a really good job at Kent State, which has been a basketball program forever. He's a significant upgrade for them. And some guy that I think it's really gonna help coach crime as far as the offense, would also know how to be a head coach. Charl Only, the defensive coordinator, has been in Alabama. He's one of national titles at Alabama and Florida
State as a defensive coordinator. So he's got tons of experience. So those two guys right there lead the way. But they've got i think four of the five assistance and on the offensive been head coaches in college in the past. And you've got some experience on the defensive side as well. So I think it's an interesting mix of coaches and I think if they're helping him out quite a bit, what would a successful season be like or what would it
be in your mind or maybe their mind? Well, I think you don't know who you ask. I think you know nationally and the way that they've kind of he's been brash about things. People would say that if they're not in a bowl game, enough to failure. But for me watching this program all these years, if they're four and eight and they're competitive in those in most of those other eight, that's a really good season for this team. If fame of fighting, I think six and six and getting to a bole
game would be a tremendous season for this program. So I'm really it's just show that you're a much better team than you were last year. And I think a lot of it sets up for next year. So I think it's kind of laying the foundation for twenty and twenty four. Well, the over under on wins for Colorado's three and a half, it's what I've seen, So you think they'll get the over on that over four because I look, I got twenty dollars burning a hill in my pocket right now? On what
do you say as right now? I'm not a betting man, but I'll say this, if Schedur standards is healthy, I don't see a Schedur Standards lead team winning less than four games don't good. He's too competitive. When you've got a quarterback that's that talented, I don't think you went less than four games. So I penciled them in for four if he's healthy the entire season, and maybe they steal a couple others and get in that whole game. Tell us about him, what you say he's a really talented quarterback,
NFL type quarterback. What does he do and who does he remind you of? Well, I don't know if he even thinks you. If anybody say, he's just he's got a really good i Q. He's know who's where to put the ball, and he puts it there. I mean, here's all these receivers are telling us. Is his ball placement amazing and he's completing about I know it's fall camp, you can't get hit, so he's completing a super high clip. I mean, I'm like eighty percent of his passive
practice. He rarely gets picked off, but we'll see what it's like when you get into games. But uh, he's just a very accurate pastor and he's Bobo as well. He can run the ball, so he's not gonna be a guy that runs for five hundred yards or a thousand yards, but he can get out of situations. May he plays happening with this feed. You know, this is a guy that obviously his father's in the Hall of Fame. He's worked with Tom, but he's worked with Hall of famers his
whole life growing up. So he's got that mentality of it's just all business and I'm gonna work hard. So I was gonna ask you, oh man, I missed it. I missed it. So do you you covered the team for a while. Now do you remember Jason Harris? Yeah? So he still end the down in Arizona. How good was he? How good was he up there? Did he just want to leave or what was this situation? Yeah, he didn't, he didn't play when he was serious here the one year, but he was highly regarded and there was a lot of
excitement about get But I think that I can't remember his situation. I think he was here twenty nineteen and left after the coaching James. He was recruited by Milk Tucker, I believe, and then Milk Tucker leaves, and so I think Jason was more wanting. He wasn't here was recruited him and his brother was down at Arizona, and so I think he wanted to go more closer to home. But he was a talented kid. He was one of the guys I was most excited about Mavericky class. Right. Well, now
he's he came here and now he's gone, He's left the team. That's why ask So let me ask you real quick, a personal question. I know I had something else to ask you, but okay, So you've been covering this team for a long time. I'm sure the community knows who you are. You cover the team. You kind of not so much celebrity, but people know who you are. How has it been now for you? Yeah, it's been It's been different. I mean I get I get randomly
asked in places how coach Prime doing? And I like to look around who asked me that I don't recognize somebody and they used themselves to me. So it happens all the time, and it's been unique in that regard, certainly, more comments on social media, more followers on social media, and YouTube channels blown up, all that stuff. So it's definitely more exposure and I get recognized a little more if people know that I'm covering coach Prime. So
that's been strike. When the Iron's House ask for a race, I do have a quick question the thing. Will they miss Montana because I know the people don't here love Montana? Yes and no, I think you guys got a great one. I mean Montana's are very good receiver. His numbers. Don't look at his numbers and Jeff mof of that because the quarterbacking was so terrible. If they had a quality quarterback, he would have had much better
enough. So yeah, he's a very good receiver. I will say no, they won't miss him just Becau because I think they are loaded a receiver and that he might have been, you know, a top three or fourth type of receiver for them. But I don't think there's anything there's anybody here that you know, I don't think he does anything that others here, you know, you know what I mean. I think they're just finite receiver. But Arizona's got a very good one. Okay, good, just good.
You know, hey, Brian, good luck with this. We'll touch base. We'll check in a TCU first game. Right wait wait wait TCU first game? What what? What are your thoughts on that? I think TCU
win that game. But I think that, uh, it's hard to project what this car team is going to be, like, I mean, we just haven't seen them, and I think that's the most intriguing thing is that, you know, well, I want to see if they're looking on the field, and I think they're very capable of going out there and maybe surprising people. But going into it, I would project TCU wins that game. Brian, Thanks much. I appreciate it for you on the show. That
was good. Thank you, Brian. How very I don't envy him, but do you know he's having fun. Yeah, here's the deal. If Dean's not a big jerk, then it's fun. Right, Then it's fun because you got all this attention on the program. People are reading your stuff nationally, right, there's excitement around the program. You know, as you said, you don't have to win eight games for people to continue to be excited about the program. If they win Ford, they're gonna be pretty happy
and what the hell? You don't talk to him very often anything, so you know in that sense he's probably having a great time with it as when you and I. It's said, if you're dealing if you're dealing with the coaches, let's say he's Bobby Night, it's just a big jerk to you all the time. Well then you don't want to deal with a guy like that. So I covered as you know, Kevin O'Neill, he was here in the interim basis for Luke and people. Would you have these perceptions?
I loved, I love Kevin O'Neill. He was quotable, He said some crazy stuff. He went out the way he came in. It wasn't mean to he was Middleton Bruce, but he was he was Bruce. But but but Kevin, Kevin's that dude. You know a lot, a lot of fun. But you never knew what Kevin You're gonna care. So you know what I'm saying, it's some days we're different, some days we're not all right? All right? That was fun, good, good talking to Brian.

We witting a little over with Brian and it was good following up. But Brian was really good. Always
a great guest. We love having him on. We talked to him anytime Arizona's gonna play Colorado and something, basketball, football, whatever. He's always been great to get on the show and give us a lot of insight, you know. And and this whole thing with with Deon Sanders is the is the head coach at Colorado. You know that it's creating a lot of work for him, but uh, you know, you'd rather have work than not
have work, right, No, exactly. I mean he's busy. I've seen stuff on n A send comes over the work and so he's real busy. He's real busy, but not with the coach. Yeah, well he's just covering the team and that's and covering the team apparently does not involve having a lot of contact with Dean Sanders. So and then he talks about I was gonna asking this because he talks about the Sanders Junior doing really well passing the interception. How does he know if he doesn't go to practice, said
or and whatever he sees on YouTube. But you're only gonna, as he said, You're only going to see the goodtuff. It was the last time you saw a highlight reel that had bad highlights? I know, I know, I know, I know. Yeah, do that look when I when I take pictures to Bet, I'd never give my bad side, which of course means I never have pictures way exactly exactly, at least at least not until you shave. But you know, yeah, you're right, and so
I think there are a lot of unknowns there. You know, we'll start to find out when they go when they go play TCU. I mean, if TCU throttles them and Sanders looks like he's lost, then you know, you kind of get a sense that, you know, and when I say Sanders, I'm talking about both Sanders really, you know, So let me ask you. There's a reason why I asked him how we thought they would
do, because we talked about this. They play Arizona, right, and somebody friends reference somebody early on Twitter that they had a thought they had a chance to beat Arizona. Okay, okay, that's fine. Do you feel more highly about Colorado? Now give him their talent? Not in terms of whether I think they're gonna beat Arizona, no, but but games and w
do? I mean I kind of do because one of my big questions was it wasn't he I think he kind of answered this is is Dean Sanders going to be a celebrity or is he going to be a head football coach? I think Colorado I think we can do both. I know, but you have to there has to be you have to zero in on being a coach.
You know. You can love all the stuff, you know, bringing you know, guys into your practices and stuff like he said, you know, mikel Irvin and and and Terrell Owens and those kinds of things, but at some point you got to do the work and you got a coach. I think he's doing that. I think he's being short changed. It sounds like he might be, That's what I'm saying. So in that regard, I feel like that question kind of got answered for me that Deon Sanders actually
is being a head coach. He didn't take the job just so that he could be visible and people know who he is and all that kind of stuff. Part of the we've covered coaches here. Yeah, someone was one. The guys didn't play hard for him. It very obvious. I don't know if we ever wrote that or talked about it. We talked about it and we said it all the time. So so let me let me say this.
I guarantee you Jay that his team, the players are going to play hard for him for even just one reason, because he's gonna demand he'll kick your ass if it does he do exactly. So you have guys who play out of fear or play for you because they love the heck out of they respect you and want to play hard exactly. And we've seen it. We've seen it here. There are a lot of number of times. I think they're gonna play hard for him. I think they're gonna be better than what
people think. What that means, I don't know. Yeah, I mean being better could still mean two in ten too, and ten that's why he said a successful season. What if what if they are in games, would they lose? I don't know, I don't know, but I think you they're gonna win more. What's the three and a half, three and a half, dude, I go over, you're taking over. I have to see their schedule, but I think that's a Two of the three non conference
games are are Artco in Nebraska and then Colorado States the other one. So one, maybe three, that could be, that could be. I have to the Colorado Colorado Colordo State game is is even though Colorado's out of the state in the Mount West, that's a huge rivalry and Coloro State gears up for that game every year. Yeah, so you know when you think of that, now, try and pick you know, try and pick four wins
out of the pick three. Well, let's say they go two and one, one and two in their in their non conversation and pick three conference wins. You know who they're gonna be. Let me see here, TCU right two weeks Nebraska Colorada State ducks no US Nope, Arizona State maybe possibly that's two. Where's that at at an issue? Okay, Stanford at Colorado YEA three three UCLA nope, Oregon State nope, Arizona Nope, nope, Washing
hesitated, Washington, Washington State at Washington State, Utah nope. Man, man, that's why the numbers three and a half that the odds makers saw what you just saw, what we just saw. Man, Well that the numbers three and a half. They've got to win a game that you don't to win. So Arizon what five, five and a half, five and a half, five and five, which is which is a tougher bet. I think they're very much the same because Arizona is a five or six win
team. Right. Yeah. If you look at if you walk through the schedule and you can pick five games, they need two games. They need two games in there, right, Yeah, that's gonna be tough. Yeah. I don't know. I think just for the challenge, I would go over three, three and a half whatever. Yeah, I wouldn't know what game it would be though, Well yeah what game? What game are they gonna win? That you is just as better. Yeah, they're coming off
some crap d you coach all that stuff exactly. Wow. Okay, that's why the numbers three and a half. If somebody went through that and came up with the same three games, we didn't said, okay, now they got to win one more. Right. It's like they're like, are you gonna watch them? You're gonna watch them? Well, what depends on where I'm at. I'll watch the TC Colorado game because I want to see eleven o'clock Saturday. You probably want to be the tig tailgate by that time.
But let me see this in the games at seven. Oh yeah, yeah, you'll watch it. So they're kind of like a car crash and you're saying you can't take your eyes exactly. He says, where are they gonna follow? Where they gonna hit it here? Granted Albernon or yeah, and you know, and there's some people who are rooting against I'm sure some people who are rooting for him. Some people who just love Dion so they're gonna be rooting for him and don't know crap about Colorado or just watching him to
see what kind of reaction. And then maybe you have an old forty nine Ers fan who hated him when he was with the Cowboys, and they're gonna hate. They're gonna hate on it, right, Yeah, it's interesting. I don't know. Look, in the end, he's doing what Colorado. They're selling the hell out him, you know, so Brian said they sold all their season tickets. Arizona would like to have that problem. Yeah, if he would have been here hypothetically, obviously there was one would have been
more into it. I think the same thing would have happened. The hype put a bit crazy. But I'll tell you what I wouldn't. I wouldn't want him. No, I know, I don't. I don't. I wouldn't want him. Yeah, yeah, yeah, No, you got your guy. You get your guy. And it's not against it's not his problem. But imagine, imagine if imagine if Dan had come available. I get it. At the time in Arizona hires Deon Sanders. What do you think as an Arizona as a guy who's been covering Arizona? Are you thinking this
is this is a freaking circus and how's this gonna work? No? What are you thinking? Man, here's a guy who's who knows how too, knows how to win and all that kind of I'll give you this, who's the given the covered basketball for so long? Who's the equivalent on the basketball side. It's not calor Pari. It's not Calipari. Who's is Patino? Yeah? I guess there's no real There isn't one. There's no there's not anything like that where the guy needs to be proved. You know proved himself
yet has this personality. Let's take this collar. Hi, you're on the air and I on the ball. Yeah, good afternoon, gentlemen. What's going on? How are you, Steve? How are you doing good? Rick? I was just catching you on the in between appointment here real quick. I really think that Dion Sanders is going to have his kids playing above their talent level. Agree and I and I think that teams are going to underestimate that intensity, and I think their defense is going to probably give them
more opportunities to win than people expect. Just his mentality and his success and his understanding of what it takes to win. I think he's embedding that in a bunch of kids that probably are like, Okay, let's go do it and start to believe in themselves. So I think I think they can beat a issue really handley, and I think they could beat Oregon State, and I wouldn't be surprised if they upset either UCLA or USC. And you didn't mention the Arizona, Yeah, don't. I don't want to go there.
No, I don't think. No, I don't think Arizona is going to allow that to happen. But I think uh, I think our coach probably has a much more understanding in the intensity because he was in the NFL with Dean Sanders, and so he understands what that takes. My thought on that, Rick is that you know, Dean Sanders, Hall of Fame NFL player, you know, incredible college football player, knows how to win, knows what it takes to win at the highest level. The question is can he
coach that? And that's what we don't know, and that's what we'll probably find out. And if he can coach that, then yeah, he's going to be successful. Well, look at the team that Dick Tomy had, what you know before the Desert Swarm was the Desert swarm. I mean, he took a bunch of you know, not so highly recruited players and he figured out a way to get our heads to make them winners. Right, Hey, ritentional the call. We gotta go. We gotta talk this weekend,
We gotta get that. We're here at the top of the ore here, Rick, thanks for the call. Appreciate it, man. Yeah, yeah, I don't need Rick to convince me to go over three. But I think they're going. Man, I think that's a I think it's not a great bat, but it's a it's a kind of a challenge. You're going you're taking the over, three three twins, three names, to win
four games. They'll find something in there. Nebraska, Colorado State, and then who else after that, we'll see they have the good lucky he s you, hey, she's not gonna be that good. It's hard. It's hard to know, you know. I mean, they've got this as a good quarterback. It looks like that kid from Florida. Who there, Miami is gonna pay or Florida's gonna pay thirteen million dollars. Well, you just go and get out of here, all right. We'll be right back breaking news here at the top of the hour.
