Stringy live. I mean I heard radio whap. This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jacob Salez Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. Hey, welcome back to the ball here Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve's Jay. Now we have Sammy with breaking news. I on the balling news. Yeah. So a couple of quick college notes. There's a new transfer rule. Was digging into it a little bit, but it now allows all transfers to play
immediately or their eligibility is immediately accessible pending like pending. Their grades are right enough, but they can't transfer like during the season or can they No, No, that that all that. It's still the two windows are still the right time where they can transfer, but it's now. And again I thought this was already the case, but there were some circumstances this past year that I guess prevented some people from from immediately playing. I know the receiver for
North Carolina and some other people. But now that shouldn't be that shouldn't be the case. It's just become more wild wild West. Yes, yes, and there's there's probably no stopping it, at least until something changes. One of the things this this goes to the transfer portal and n I own stuff that I heard just the other day, and I wanted to get your guys
opinion on it. But the thought of college teams or college organizations, whether maybe it's a team by a team basis, but having a general manager like for the team, because a lot of because a lot of coaches hence Nick Saban, he's done, and a lot of these guys don't want to be doing all of this. They just want to be coaching and recruiting here.
Well, again going to that, going to that conversation that that I saw with Dan Hurley with Dan Patrick that he said exactly that he said, you know, because Patrick asked, would you ever want to go to the NBA? And he basically said yes. He said, that's the only he said, because he says, you go to the NBA and you just coach. He said, you're not the general manager. You're not the guy that's going out and getting players. Yeah, you could, you know, you have
some input as to why, but you're not that guy. He said. Here in the job that I'm in, I'm the general manager and I'm the coach too, right, Yeah, And so that's that's why, as as someone that talks about it a lot or hears it all that it really kind of sparks something of like these coaches realistically just want to coach basketball. They just want to coach football, and that the h the old school way of recruiting is not what they grew up in or how they how they were taught
how to recruit. And so I don't know. It's just an interesting thing because now the portal is as wild as it is. People are gone, people are coming in, there's money involved, and I don't know. I thought it was interesting. Secondly, you guys obviously probably have talked about Umar Bobo going to Indiana, But did you guys see the number that it was quote taking to get him. Yeah, I don't believe it. You don't. I was trying to get a nil guy here yesterday and okay, I
don't believe it though. That's a lot of money and I don't Someone had thrown that out and in fact, I said I don't always believe that the internet. Sure, Well, there's the whole thing about him being a right edie talked about that last week at the Final four, how it was difficult, right, So it's hard for me to believe that I do not know that. I don't want to challenge any of my colleagues who've got that number,
but do dot I don't know. That's a lot. Then Indiana needed to pay attention because I don't know if he's worth one point and God bless his heart, one point of guy? Did they not know he can't shootree thows? Do they not know? He ranges about four feet? And again I'm not poo pooing him more power too, but that's a heck of a lot of money for that guy. Yeah, I think for any guy like that. No, I think a lot of programs. Again, we watched
him every single night, single game, a lot of programs. They probably do their due diligence and research, but they probably saw the Final Four this year of Klingon and he played really well against him in Vegas and all these big guys that are taking over college basketball, and they were probably telling themselves that he could do the same for them, and you can't can't knock them, no, no, no, no, go for it. Man.
But last last college thing, Phoenix Sun's assistant Kevin Young just took the by U job and making him a very very highly so maybe Howard will chime into this tomorrow whatever year is this, and you follow him a little bit. Yeah, let's assume for a second the sons don't Sons don't get out of this first round. Vogel's already in trouble. Kind of. I think he does he survive this year? He survives. I mean, granted, every anything can happen. If we get swept four to oh and it's ugly and
it's bad, then a lot of things are gonna happen. But I mean, you saw it with Monty Williams last year. He's a great coach for us, and he just one or two games and he's out the door. So anything has happened. But I do think if we compete and say we do lose to the Timberwolves in six or seven, I don't think I I personally would think is going to it. There's been Well, having spent a lot of time in Phoenix last two weeks, that's a lot to talk about
it. Yeah, but Kevin Young was going to be like the next guy up in the organization, to be like that next head coach, but he took I'm curious now that because Miles is there and I'm not sure what level he is in terms of the coaches, but I'm sure that his next up was next step. Yeah, it probably with Miles Simon, right, you're talking about Yeah, he I know what he does development, it'll it'll come to me. But when I when I do. But you know he's been
he's been with them for a little bit. So yeah, for a little bit, he's That's what I meant. Yeah. And then so moving to the NBA, John Tay Porter, that whole thing he's just been. He's been banned from the nb Yes, they saw that. So can't do that, dude, No, can't be doing that. Well he was what what what? What was happened is he was he was betting on improp bets. There were prop bets on him, and so he was purposely on him.
He wasn't betting on himself, but he well he was, well maybe he was, but he was like, if they're saying you he's got over under three point shots, well he would take himself out of the game to hit
so that the under would hit. So suppose, I don't know. I don't know if they proved that he was betting on himself, but certainly people knew he was doing there was something going on to the matter of his prop bets where and this is a guy that was on a ten day contract and that it was playing on an irrelevant Toronto Raptors team and on random nights like his prop bets would be the highest, like bet on thing in FanDuel DraftKings,
whatever it may be, and that that's not some thing that's just normal. And then so what was happening is he for three points or it rebounds or points. It's like two straight games. One he got hurt, his eye got hurt. Second he left with an illness, and so both those unders hit and so it just crushed the books. And so that's kind of what started to happen. That's the only thing we need to talk about for
John tape Porter. But quickly, in the NBA, play in the East games or tonight the Hawks and the Bulls the nine to eight and then the seven eight is sixers heat, so winner of the seven eight game will be the seven and then it'll go on from there. But last night was the West. The Lakers beat the Pelicans, so they will be playing the Denver Nuggets in the first round, which get your popcorn. I'm excited for it. In that game, Zion Williamson got hurt and it's been now reported he
won't play in the the winner go home game against the Kings. So I don't love their chances without him. So yes, I have forty. So in case you were and well, the kiss of death extends to the NBA. Oh you bet on the I had both Warriors, the Pelicans and the Warriors I had. I just love the Lakers and the Kings. It was nice, it was good. You can't don't ever if you haven't learned by now, don't ever mention what you got because the guy to my right, well, screw it up. Hey. All I needed to hear was he
was on the other side. I want to say you congratulations on your picks, but it wasn't your picks. It was his, you know for sure? Yeah I want half, not half maybe, but anyway, So, the official NBA playoffs get underway this Friday, And honestly, as the NBA junkie nerd of all all all this, I am, so you can get to the draft Kings site real quick, so I know you do. NBA. What's the who's like the Chalky and who's the so for like title? Yeah, the Celtics are the favorite. What the I want to say,
it's plus one twenty. Oh that's no good, no, but yeah, I U the Nuggets were plus three forty like a couple weeks ago. That's okay, but there's real like I mean really if you want like juice, like odds like that, the teams you would probably look at are like the Mavericks, the Suns even because their lower seeds. That's the thing here, they are self. Tics are plus one sixty, the Nuggets are plus two
eighty. Then after that, everybody's plus twelve hundred or more. You got the Clippers at twelve hundred, the Bucks at fifteen, the Thunder at sixteen, the MAVs at sixteen, the Suns at nineteen. The Oklahoma City's are pretty good dogs. And on the West it's it's one of those things where that's the juice. I would see Steve No, I advise, well, I'm not going to do it, but they won the West for a reason. No one, but I wouldn't go anywhere else because what else is you
going to pick The Bucks up? There? They suck. You got hurt, the well, be honest, is hurt too. They're they're really just banking on that they win this series then get you Onnis back and they have to they'd probably go play the Knicks. Who I love the Knicks, but you don't have Nick their way down at four thousand. Yeah, I love that, like just I love the Knicks. This year they're they're probably my second favorite team to watch behind the Suns. But no, NBA playoffs is
my super Bowl. So it's really okay because it's just during the regular season. I can understand where people get turned away from watching the NBA because it's eighty two games and whatever it may be. I've I've heard all of it. But when the playoffs start, it's quote a new season, and these guys are they get up for every game the best players play. Yeah, well that's and that's why you don't watch or I don't watch. It's funny because my daughter walks in last night, walks into the room, and I
got the I got the game, the Lakers game on. She goes, you must have something on the game because you're watching watching the NBA. She knew. I got four quick things. Uh, And d Backs and Dodgers both lose today, the Dodgers and skid they're they're They're two and four on a sit in their six game home stands so far not great, not great, and the Diamondbacks fall to one game below five hundred nine ten this year.
The last couple of things, you guys might have mentioned it early in the week, but Scotti Scheffer won the Masters did his second green jacket. The Arizona Coyotes. I don't know if you guys talked about them moving to Yeah, well we had we had the Roadrunners coach on so but he didn't have anything to say. I don't know. Yeah, it feels like nobody knows, like what's going on. Well, they they know, but they
don't want to talent exactly. The last two things, so Caitlyn Clark was the number one overall pick, went to the Indiana Fever and her jerseys sold out within an hour. Was pretty cool. And then last but not least, Connor McGregor will be back in UFC three hundred and ten. Can wait for him to walk in the room. You guys are UFC fans. I know I enjoyed last we can do you follow it? Yeah, so last weekend, we can understood the guy who got all away all the way knocked
out she's from here. He's from so I've been trying to trying to find him, how to get him on. Now it's gonna be a while because he lost, but he had done very well. He was they call they call that like division, the b MF, like the baddest like that's because all those guys are just right. They try and just go. I've been trying to get him on because he's from southern Arizona and then I haven't been
able to find him. But you know, one thing we didn't talk about yesterday, Jay, was the Michigan getting in trouble that the coach know that the coach is gone. But isn't that isn't that the way that goes because the coach goes and now somebody so the ones that were left over dead, the kids in the administration get it. I mean I understand it. But
there's because you can't penalize the guy that's now already gone. I mean, if you would, they're gonna go, they're gonna he's they're gonna check him out, or they're doing something with him specifically, not that it matters if he did it. Yeah, okay, And the only thing that you could do is just kind of blacklist him from getting another job in college football, but he'll never come back. Yeah exactly, that's what maybe was the reason
why he left. Sure, sure, okay, I have one. This is right up your alley, Steve, right up here, right up here, the forty first out toward two. Oh yeah, yeah yeah. We scheduled for November the twenty third, which which is on the day of a

Okay, what are the He made a commitment and he was sorry that he made that. Remember we talked. I just was I thought I was in shape for I thought I'd done a good job training. Okay, that was like me when I did this. So it's one hundred and two sixty three and thirty two ish six just from the trainer. James Ready, I got your bag, Jay,

this. We've been wanting to get her on the footel full. Okay, she should be coming on here just a second. This year I coached. Hello, coach of de Barnes. How are you? Yes? Hi, Hi Stephen Jay here. I've been waiting to talk to you for a while now, so are you fine? Thank you? Hey? How's the off season or is there one? There's never one? That's why I say that, Yeah, there's never one. We literally have been going since after the
game. Yeah, let me tell you. I was watching the USC game in the Elite eight ninety A. DA must have been working some magic this year. How does Arizona with seven players give this team go to the brink not just once or twice with the USC when they're in the lead. Eight You had a you had some magic against the against a lot of teams this year. Yeah, we just didn't finalize it. You know, we had
to, like we took that. It's just like little things that we lost, like off of an offensive rebound or I think we had we have to be bigger and more athletic because we lost a couple of those big time games from offensive out. You know. Wait, when you have a season like you had, where you know there's so much adversity to it, when you look back on it, does it give you a chance to say to kind of have an appreciation for really? I mean, okay, so you got
to the NCAA tournament. You probably you didn't go as far as you wanted to go or hope to go. But still in the end, when you go through the things that you go through on a season like that, you still have I mean, you still have to feel good about it, don't you. Yes, I felt really good, but it's stuff that I could have never prepared for or anticipated, right, I mean may A Nauge quitting the team during the year to focus on school, and then we had a
situation with Kalin. Then we had to remove someone from the roster at the very beginning of the year, and then we had solid gear hurt. That's four players and it was half of our team scoring. Yeah, yeah, no, people don't realize that, no, of course, and then you have to kind of shuffle lineups and hope that there's everyone's healthy, and then you have a tough schedule. We had the number two We had the number
one schedule in the country until the second Pact twelve game. Then you say I've jumped up ahead of us because they played USC again before that we had, so we had the number two schedule in the country. So to part to Jay's point, and I was going to ask that same question Jay, which was I thought was a good one. Would you have changed anything or could you have changed anything? Because you can't control control injuries? But what
else? I don't know what I would have changed because I didn't anticipate that stuff happening. So like I would have never anticipated someone stopping in the season, I would have never anticipated kayan me and our best score, me having to remover like this is stuff I would have never thought what happened? Yeah, yeah, So in times like that, I mean, is there is there? Are you ever saying to yourself? God, you know, just can we just get back to something normal? Or do you just deal with
it? I mean, now, how do you how do you go through all that stuff and not drive yourself crazy? Well, you just deal with it and say, Okay, it is what it is, like your bath, let's try to find a way to make the tournament. And I remember sitting there at one point in the season and counting the looking at the future opponents in the backs of we're getting ready to play, and thinking like, it's going to be really hard for us to win four pack twelve games.
And then as we got better and we ended up winning like nine, It's like I would have not anticipated that. I thought that was really unrealistic with our youth and our personnel and how hard our conference was. But you know, looking back, I wouldn't have probably if I would have known what was going to happen, which I couldn't have, I would not have scheduled such a hard non conference. Yeah, and we would have won them twenty four
games, so we would have had a higher seating in the tournament. But I didn't anticipate this stuff. I didn't know how nervous were you on the day of the bracket announcement. I was really nervous, but I went in pretty confident because I thought we did some really good things at the end. I looked at all the analytics, and when I compared all of our stuff would have been higher. Like I compared us to Texas A and M,
Vanderbilt and some other teams. But we're kind of on the bubble, and our numbers were way better than Texas A and M. So we shouldn't have been playing game I didn't think. But like there's different reasons whatever, but we got the playing games. Yes, you know, we had the Syracuse games to the very end and then they're just kind of went off. So proud of our performance, but just wish we could have done more. You
know, Yeah, no question, I hear you, no question. You did teach, Like I said, seven players, a couple of walkouts. I'm come on, this may be a silly question and maybe not for you to decide, but this could be one of your better coaching years. Maybe I think it was. I didn't. I didn't realize it at the time, But for me to figure out a way to try to get them to really play and come together, it was hard. And all of this is about practicing a town, so trying to find a way to keep them healthy
and figure it out without a lot of practice, it's hard. But I think it was good because it challenged me in different ways and I was trying to extract the best I could, and I had them playing the best we could. I don't think we could have done any more than what we did right right, So as you, as you you know, went through that, are you kind of looking at your team sort of forward and saying, Okay, even though this is hard, we've only got seven girls and we're
playing as hard as we can and doing as much as we can. Were you letting your mind go to how this would impact you next year, that you have all these girls who are getting all this experience. You know, you've got Jada who's playing you know, a ton you know, at the point guard, and how that's going to help her going forward. Did you ever let your mind go to that or were you too caught up in just
trying to win again. Absolutely, when I was frustrated or thinking, oh we lost this game just because we're young and we didn't know the box out, or you know, like I was thinking, Wow, this is going to really pay dividends next year because the firstmen are getting like two years of experience with all the minutes they're playing, right. You know, a couple of years ago we were a top five team, they would have came in
and played a quarter of the time they played, right. So I looked at how UCLA was last year with Kiki and London and how they're playing this year and carrying the team. I figured that's how our kids are going to be next year. Right. So now as you as you're you know, become more of a veteran coach and you'd love to coach. Is it more to the about the construction of the roster? Now that's almost as important Where this this piece will fit here, this piece will fit here? Well,
I think the first thing and the most important thing is NIO. Like that's one, two, three, four, five and sixth most important so far. Wow, Because if you don't raise money and you don't have financial support
with NIO, you are not going to win games. You're not going to retain your players and you're not going to get players, So how you construct the team and how you build that is the most important thing initially and then obviously getting the right kids, coaching, getting them to play together, believing may paying that is the secondary. Because kids don't care how your office looks. They don't care how Michael looks, they don't care how how like their
locker room looks. They care about how much money they can make, and then they care about winning. Then they care about the other stuff, you know. So it's hard. Yeah. I was watching Dan Hurley this morning on on Dan Patrick and he got asked, and I'll ask you, when you're recruiting somebody, when does the nil conversation start? Where is that in the first conversation? Really, m oh Man, Mama didn't tell you there was like this as a coach. No, And it's not even like it
may not be how much money am I gonna make? It's gonna be what does your collection look like? What are the opportunities? It's not like how much you're gonna pay me, It's more like, what does that look like for Arizona? What is some evidence of that? In the past and how can you help my daughter? That is the first conversation. And you can't even get to the conversation if you say we have no NIL, you won't even get to the phone call. Yeah, that's because we're recruiting top players.
So we're competing against LSU that offers kids one fifty and we don't have that kind of money. Wow. Wow, So can you tell me where do you think Arizona sits in sort of the NIL hierarchy, particularly in your sport? Very low? Really Okay? Yeah, I mean the men's men's football obviously football, men's basketball is significantly ahead with a lot more support, like ours isn't even comparable. And like they have like a group that like
fundraises for them and does the money. Obviously the head coaches have to do it, but they have like who does it here is like myself from the director of ops. We have to go to try to find a way. But then now like we're just now getting you know, with the university and getting some help, and I think we're Desiree and Erica Barnes and are really helping. It's just a talent for universities because they're also trying to meet their
marks and gay money for scholarships and development and facilities. But then like there's only certain people to take from so or to get money raised from. So it's like we're all kind of trying to hit like, you know, the same people like Jim Quick probably vietnasked by everything every single time, every single charity in talent. So it's hard. Yeah, you don't want to just keep on trying to bother the same people talented. Well, we call it,
we call it donor fatigue. Right where do you go? Yeah, that's what it is like, and you don't want to do that near friendships and but it's a sense of being successful because it doesn't matter how well I can coach, Like it's hard to win with freshmen at the highest level. You look at all the teams across the country. You can get two or three top players and be a really good team with men's with men's basketball and
that's and football football. You don't have nal to retain those great players that core you don't win. Yeah, where do you think it's still? And look at Bala you still may not keep them. They may go to another school and makes four times money. You can't control that, but you've done all the work to develop them. That's the hard part of the code. Do you have any idea where you said as it relates to, say, the Big twelve schools? Can you tell that from like when you're recruiting somebody,
maybe they're being recruited by another Big twelve school. Do you have a sense of where Arizona sits in there? We are completely drastically behind. Wow, okay, and we're just I'm trying to level the playing field, but it's not really comparable right now. It's very difficult. So then you go, I'm in the process of like desire is our new ideas. I love the fact she gets it, Like she completely gets it and understand that she
came from the SEC so the model works and she's turned stuff around. So I know that's a focal point for her, and it's really important because it really affects us if we want to win, because you don't get top transfers without having a plan in place and without having some kind of financial supporting her. Nil you can't even talk to them. But if you can't, you won't even get a call back from au Coade. Well, you did a
couple of recruits. I don't know if you can talk about them, but you did get some name people at least coming in next year transferation, Yeah, and some of that some relationships in the past through them before. So like we're never going to pay with an LSU or a top SEC school phase.
But so what you have to do is try to sell the fact the role can be great here, the star power, the potential here with all of our fans being the biggest college town in the country, and how we have a lot of support and it can lead to big things, and then developing them for pro right. Well, I was going to say, not only but that can't make one hundred and fifty thousand dollars gap. That can make a deficit, That can make a twenty thirty thousand our gap, but
it can't make one hundred and fifty thousand our gap. But it certainly has to help though that you had. You know, when you have two players drafted which you know would like to talk about in the WNBA, you know, opportunities for your players. I mean that's always something that coaches are selling with pre nil and you know after nil, how big was that for you
guys? No, it's huge. I mean, it sells it, but it sells it to a certain point because a lot just think about a lot of players, they're gonna make more in college than the art in the WNBA. I mean a lot of rookie contract would be like sixty seven thousand. Yeah, the most good college players that transfer will get more than that.
So they're making more money than they'll make as a professional. So I think that development, showing that we can provide for showing that we're gonna win, showing that you're gonna be taken care of, and that I've been there, done that, it really helps. But it's not. It doesn't help close a tremendous gap. And that's the reality. Like LS do we I mean I think they have like two million dollars hel money. I mean other schools have like a million, and we would be like fighting for a couple hundred
thousand total. Wow, Well let me tell you something. I saw Helena a few times now this past year. I thought, I love the way she placed. I just love the way she plays. Yeah, she's amazing, she's smart. We're losing a lot losing her. She actually just walked out of my office. Is now okay, Now you can talk about her. But yeah, you literally just walked up. Well, talk talk about those two players. Why do you think they got drafted this year? You
know, what did they have? What were the what are w NBA teams looking for that they had that got them drafted? Helena extremely high basketball, like, you can play multiple positions, really understands the game, incredible four visions, a great one on one defender, long, good size, They can play the one, two, three, and four, and just the overall good basketball player. They can do everything as Mary athletics strong, like
the way she's a feat step fourth, that she shoots the three. She can guard a bigger player than her because they were string and it can it can defend a post or guard on the perimeter. So those are things I think that it makes them really attractive. Yeah, no, very good players. Okay said that's my How much harder is it to make or is it? Is it comparable? You know, to make a WNBA roster versus an
NBA roster? I mean because you alays talk about there's only two rounds in the NBA draft, A lot of the second rounders don't ever make it, is there how much how much of a difference is there or is there? They have three rounds in the w NBA draft, obviously, so I think it's very hard because most of the time the first round do not make teams. If you're lower than like the ten six, The second, third round very hard. I think the difference is there's less teams, there's less players
on each roster, much more competitive. It's very hard for workies to make it. So you are you were? You were a meme yesterday with being the trivia question. Does it feel so many years ago that you were the first pick for Arizona. I know that's scary, and I was going the first pick of the w NBA just came around. Career, that's a nice career. Yeah, that's a nice little thing to have you hang your hat on. You know, you were the first I was cut like seven times
and just survived. You were like this year's team, gritty, gritty person. Okay, Greedy a great teammate. That's about all. Thank you, all right, coach, thanks a whole bunch of try and have a great summer. Right. Well, we're off to the recruiting tomorrow. So well, you got Thursday to Sunday on the road and we've had business every day, so you probably might see one more player hit our roster, all right, in the next few weeks. After that, we're done. All right,
Well, I guarantee you won't have seven players. We'll have like thirteen. Okay, good for you. All right, that sounds great. Okay, thank you, thanks so much, thank you. Good luck. Hey, welcome back to I in the ball here Fox Sports fourteen fifty M Steve, he's Jay, got our guy, sign me with us for thirteen more minutes, O Jay, as we talk about or you know, talk about and thinking of what a do you said? And this is a University of Arizona is a well known athletic department, well
known in a lot of different ways. And a number of their programs have been right, some of the top program and you know, I went to a small school when New Mexico and blah blah blah, and there's a lot of those. I don't know how this this model will save itself or or will it save itself because everybody's searching for that that parachute, the golden parachute
that doesn't exist. Yeah, right, let me see yeah or not many No, I don't know how sustainable this is, right, exactly, and even even say she mentioned l s U, right, how much are those
people going to keep giving and the amounts that they're giving? At some point, sure it doesn't the money run out, you know, don't they don't they The fatigue sets in and I can't do this anymore, sure, especially if they don't win the title like they didn't this year, so the enthusiasm is not going to be there, and how you know, God, I I I don't know. I don't know. And and and look, oh okay, let's let's go ahead and take this. Hi are on the air
and on the ball. Yeah, this is goo. What's up? Where have you been Nico? Hey man? How's that a country? Mexico? Did you run to Mexico for some reason? Or what were the cops chasing you? No? Man, I don't get in trouble with the law. I want to Tokyo, Tokyo. Whoa? What was that about? You got a lot of cars? I wanted to dres chase a woman? What's up? Man? What do you got? Hey? Man? Dia Barons was on fire today. Yeah she was. Yeah, we love her.
What she's telling us the truth, a lot of stuff. Yeah. She said that they could only offer like twenty three k. No, what she said was that, you know that there's some places that are offering one hundred and fifty thousand and they can't compete with that. Yeah. No, I
mean, but but that's what we're talking about. It's it's like that you know, and you know when you again, when you when you you see something like we've talked about Oklahoma, so right that you know, you hear that there's just a person out there who's giving millions of dollars into there and I l and that's why they don't lose games, because they've got they're going out there and buying the best players that they can buy. This is not even funny. And I don't know. I don't know how you you keep
that up. I mean, are you a vacant competed right right? No? One hundred? Doesn't this make you disheartened kind of being a fan. We're knowing that you're not going to be able to compete financially, So what does that mean athletically? And that's all you're in ill it's not the matters to him and kinnor Murray. Yeah, exactly exactly, Nicole. Good to hear from you. Man Hey, and your intern was wrong. Carson Palmer was a cardinal. It's not a bank. Oh no, I disagree.
He's a champion, That's what that's what I would say. No, I understand they would have beat to get that. I think we got it. Okay, just let it go, Sam, Okay, yeah, no, wonder you have been calling. You're on fire. Hey, hey, I'm just saying they would have beat the brown because in the Super Bowl. All right, Okay, n he digs a bunch man, Okay, you up the phone. Let's go back to it, because and it's a now, it's a now. It's one of the recognized programs basketball for the women.
And if they're needing that much money even to compete at a smaller level, right, Okay, let's say, for instance, stand okay, is there fan base? They've been one of the top five programs in the country for a long time. Tara Van Derveer, sure retires, Okay, how much interest will remain and how much money will they continue to get for their program
going forward? He right there? They're so I feel like when you when when you you lose, when a coach like that retires or whatever you've got, you're at a crossroads, right are you gonna be able to sustain your success? But you said a plane and simple. If you don't have the money, you can't win, all right, So it's affer it in a position where I said, okay, terrors Vanrver's retired, I'm kind of done giving all my money over there, or or how can the university, go
sell that and say please stay, please stay with me. I thought your question was to her about how early does the conversation happen right away? But I'm sure it happened right away before all this, not with women, but with the guys. You know, hey, my son is pretty good. Yeah, he has an offer here over here for this much money can you
do for me? Yeah? Exactly, But it's fincause Dan Hurley's answer to that was, if that's if that's the first part of the conversation and we're less interested in that guy, Tommy, just the same thing, if they want to come here for that, then that's probably not he said. I
think he called it a red flax. Yeah. If you know, if I'm having a conversation about somebody wanting to come to Connecticut and the first thing out of the mind is how much money can I make to me, that's you know, that's something that makes me think twice about this kid, Tommy. You said that it's too This is more than just that. This is the besketball you learn how to be good play good basketball, play as a team. You have a difference and you said it as well to that is
that in college in women's basketball. This might be the most money they'll ever make playing basketball. True, you know what sixty two thousand dollars rookie contract, if wale, if Lene Bidl makes the team, makes the team, right. I wanted to get into that with her. Can't you know, how about the money because everyone today's uses Caitlin Clark's gonna make seventy five seventy six thousand dollars and and and people are upset because she's the first the first
pack and compared to the men, that's nothing. I don't even know where to go with this because it's politically incorrect. If you go one way and you say you're right, but there's you know what I'm saying, Well, can you say that's right? You can't say you know, you can't lose you like Santa Claus, not really, then you have to explain why. Yeah, it's slippery slow, very slippery slow. But you know, I think that you know that that's kind of the reality of where they are.
True. I mean, if Caitlyn Clark wasn't bringing all her endorsements with her, everybody's right, she would be taking a pic, sure, but you know, fortunately for her, But how many Kaitlyn Clarks are there? Yeah, not many, many, a couple, especially when you move the needle. But everyone's talking about, well, look at the game now, Well you have to kind of establish yourself. Yeah, that's the thing everyone's saying. How and it has been the last three years. In the next couple
of years of women's college basketball, it's going to be great. What happens when you look at the men's NCAA It's like when you don't have the Zion Williams Sins or the guys like that, some people just become disinterested. And so Caitlyn leaves, how many people are gonna tune in to watch Iowa basketball next year? Sure? You know what I mean? Like, obviously you have Page and Juju lightning in a bottle. Yeah, those are those are the two people that the NCAA are going to turn all their focus to.
But what happens when they leave? Who's what's next? You know? Right? No, it's a it's a tough situation. I don't envy, I don't end to me. It's like, well, who are going to watch a game? Opening it to be competitive? Yeah, but you know that this team has all the best players because they bought all the best players. It's like, well you you guys are pro guys, the Yankees or the Stays, And that's I mean that's what originally like you got excited to watch
college sports like they're amateurs. You have to recruit them and you can't pay whoever to come to the Lakers or whatever. Like you go recruit them, their their kids and quote there's like a it's the even playing field, Like you get excited to watch them play hard for their school. Right and now you not say you don't have that, but that's it's a completely different world now of Adam mentioned it, if you don't have money, it's gonna be
really really hard to win. But that's what makes teams like you look at Purdue and coach Painter, he talks about his lack of nil with the team, and they were in the championship. That's what there's obviously cases. And you look at NC State like those guys probably weren't getting a lot of money, but they were in the final four. But see in in the in with the men's game, you can sell that if you come here and we
get you into the league, you're gonna get your money. Whereas you know in the women's in the women's game, you can't sell it flipped over. You're gonna you're gonna make more money in playing college than you know then in
the in the pros. And that's why the women's college basketball brand has been really good the last four to five years, because these these girls know, even if they're really really good, these girls know, if they stay in school and build their quote brand like Caitlyn did for the last four years, they're going to be faces of that school and they're going to make more money
than they would like. If Caitlyn Clark could come back to Iowa, she probably would, if we're gonna be honest, well she had that chance. Should she have COVID year, Yes, she could have come back for one more year, But she's got more endorsements, and more endorsements will come to
her. Maybe sure, yeah, but let me ask you to they're getting paid now and the men of football wise and basketball wise, and we kind of criticized here a little bit, not not a whole lot about the players, but now they're making money and to a degree that we don't even know are they are they worthy? Are they worthy? Are they targets now for people like us or the general public, which I get on and on Facebook, because they are getting paid a lot of money? Are they targets?
Are the fair? I mean? Essentially, Well, it's hard because you don't know, you don't know who's getting paid more, you don't know the level of With the pros, it's easy. You can go look up Wan SODA's contract for instance, you're and you go, oh, one year, thirty one million, what's that money getting us? What's the money getting the Yankees? But with this it's hard because there's a lot of gray area in terms of And you're in Indiana and you are you saying, Paul, you're
a poem you can't hit free throws? Yeah? I mean, and I think it's I mean, then essentially he's a professional athlete, right, and that and that's an adjustment that the athletes are gonna have to make knowing that, Okay, you know, those people who were yelling at me before before I was getting paid are gonna yell even louder now that I am right. Especially that guy sitting right and mid court four rows up, Who's who's the
one I'm getting his money? And he's saying, you're embarrassing my you're embarrassing my brand. Yeah, right, like Spencer Rattler, Right, he got those cars like you know that car dealers, like the starter. Yeah, what the hell. It's a lot of trust. There's a lot of trust factor in, like the investment in these kids because they are still kids. That's the one thing she made, and she made click. I mean that was the obviously the name with Romberto and all these guys. At some point,
at some point, I can't put your family. I can't do this anymore. Yeah, I don't know again how you sustain it or you know, do a few schools sustain it? So they have all the success, right the Alabama's, the Texas, the Ohio state, you know, LSU. It's sustainable for them, but maybe not for ninety five percent of the of the school. All of a sudden, when she was talking about this money, I'm thinking they have about seven and seven some thousand, five hundred
games average maybe. And then you put a little kitty on the corner and you hear five bucks, five bucks. Everybody's charged, bring a can of food. You're right, you're right with with five bucks in it five times seventy five hundred, start every game, Start charging nil admission into Michale. Who knows five bucks a person after your ticket cars that might be part of
the ticket car one hundred. I could totally see that happening with season ticket holders or you have tickets, and there's like, this is making me less of a sports fan than before. Yeah, I can, I can. I can see how people would get turned off by all of this. And there are I look again my you know, my Wednesday crowd there they don't like what's happening, and it's it's there. Some of them are disillusioned about about sports. And again but they're already at times thinking some of these college
athletes kind of don't really care. Right again, you know who I'm talking about, And now you're saying and now we're paying them to not care. That's it, right. There's a lot there. You know, everybody's having to make an adjustment as to how they what's the right We're not absorbed, but how they you know, take in college athletics, how they watch it, how how much it matters to them, what they're willing to do. You know, I mean like before, if you were a donor, you
donate money to help build the locker room. Now well do you want that, but you also want me to donate money to pay as it's crazy. Well, you're fifty bucks, you're five hundred bucks. Might diviy it here, it's crazy, all right. That's it man, that was interesting conversation. Steve Good, Thank you to a dear Barnes. Thanks for Dave Silver and we'll be back tomorrow. Not to youmorrow,
