This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez Son Fox Sports fourteen to fifteen. Subscribe now to the podcast on the iHeart Radio app Just Surgery I on the Ball. Hey, welcome back to WINE on the Ball here on Fox Sports Watching fifteen. I'm Steve, He's Jay. Now we
have Sammon breaking news. I on the Ball breaking news. All right, So, I'm sure you guys have talked about it in the last couple of days, but the John Caliperry contract has officially been signed and it has been made official that he has been that he is the new head coach of the
Arkansas what are they Zor Razorbacks basketball team. We talked a little bit about it at the beginning of the show, but it stated in his contract each year will have some aer saying a slush fund of five or five million dollars to hence recruit slash give an il money towards the players. Yeah. I said that when he went back to Kentucky. But you know, Oates did the same thing because UH Alabama's boosters said, don't worry, we'll get you
right. Because Oates had been rumored as a top name to go to Kentucky, and he made a social media statement saying that he was staying in Alabama, which I mean, it's at this point now Kentucky and Alabama seem like pretty evil even playing fields in terms of basketball today today, today, today. It's funny because I saw another Facebook page, some goofy guy saying what makes Kentucky? Why is everyone thinking Kentucky's a better job than Arizona? Because
of because it is? Because it is, and some things are unexplainable, it's because it is. Yeah, well sure, it's how many championships for the its history is richer, I do think, I mean today, is it a better program? Probably not, I don't know, not They're not
a better team program. But really interesting, yeahm right, exactly, because you could you could look at I know, I know, but if you if you solely define program success on on tournament success alone, there's a lot of really really poor programs in the last five years that are historically great programs. You look at Villanova like they they're not a great program in the last three to five years, but you would say, where are you going with
this? I'm saying, like, who's going to take this next? Who's going to take the job at Kentucky because right now it's a program that you're going to get paid about eight million dollars a year, and not that money's going to drive you right right, but success hearing jobs Dave keli Pari, I thought, I've always thought this in the last fifteen years, at least almost overrated college coach in the country, given what he's brought in to coach.
Because the talent doesn't always win titles. We already don't know that, but he's gotten to the elade a few times at Kentucky. It's not a national title. Once done some good things, but you know, it's what have you done for me lately? Lately? And you're as good as your last haircut. Right. So the question is a lot of name. The names being thrown out right now are Billy Donovan. I think it's one guy
right now, right now. If this guy got Drew. If he doesn't get it, then they're really going to go after these other guys and say we want you. But does s good Drew take that job if it's given to a better yes, without question, you know who would do a really good job. And I don't know if the name's out there but Altman, Yeah, that's I think he's too old one, but you do it. I don't think he would be I don't think he'd fit that thing that fit
that I guess, But it's it's interesting. He can coach, he can coach, he can you know the guy that would be very good, but it's kind of understated. Creighton's coach McDermott, very good basketball coach, and he's young enough to where I think they would he's not. He's not. He's not like that guy. No. Yeah, and you I think to coach a Kentucky team you need to kind of have that little yeah because you have like Patino Calgary, like that little weird edged nest. Yes. So
yeah, so that you have to have a certains to you. You do almost like you I'm not saying Patino where Cali Perry thought they were too good, but like you kind of have to think of like, oh, I'm the coach. You walk into the room just like lot would have fit in perfectly because you'd walk into a room and yeah, that's our coach. Yeah. Yeah. So that's that's the college basketball news. Moving to the NBA, the Phoenix Suns had the thing had what was going to be a historic
looking loss, and there we was. There was some history involved in it. They were down upwards of thirty points after the first quarter, and I looked it up because I was really nervous that we were on the wrong end of history of what is the least amount of points scored in a quarter by
a team, how much time was left? I was looking it up with two minutes left of the We were at six, but we were in the clear because the Nuggets scored and the Nuggets in the heat scored five points and the lowest combined score was an eight to seven quarter, which that would be nuts. So we were we were close to being on the wrong side of history. But the Sons did lose to the Clippers last night, moving them into seventh place, which is they're currently in the play in they would be
playing the Timber. No, no, we'd have to we have to win the playing okay, so right now, but the seventh place of two and I think Denver's two right now, Denver's too, So we would play the Kings right now, and if we won that game, we would get the seven and play Denver. If we lost, we would play the winner of the Lakers and Golden State for the eighth spot. So I don't care much
about the Suns or the NBA one and the Suns too. But I was reading some tweets this morning because I couldn't sleep, and everyone's blaming Katie and they're saying that Booker's presence has not existed because he's got no body language. And Beal's part of the problem too, this experiment that they tried, this didn't work. I don't think you can say it hasn't worked yet. I do think there's we have uh three games left. We play the Clippers again
tonight. Which do you know the concept of marriage The honeymoon was in November. No, no, this is at the end of the marriage and it's still not The honeymoon is over. See see Steve here, here's where you're in the NBA playoffs. Oh, I get it. You could catch fire and you know, win and win at all. But you got it. There's almost problem. At what point do you say, guys, it's time, It's time. Believe me, I've been saying that all year long.
My my dad and my my parents have been like, are you worried yet? Are you weird yet? And I said, I will not be worried until we are on the brink of elimination in the playoffs, and then I will be oh my god, this is a really crappy season. Well it's you're leaving us late mid May, right, So i'll text you in the third week of May. There you go. We'll still We'll still be hanging
on. But so that that's the Sun's news, and there's a lot of So that six seven eight race right now in the West is New Orleans, the New Orleans Pelicans, Phoenix and Sacramento and the Lakers all trying to get out of the quote playing. The Warriors are tenth, but they're pretty much solidified in that ten spot. So that's that's the Western kind of drama. Also, Minnesota, Denver, and OKC are all separated by one game for second and third. So it's hard because you don't want to play the Nuggets,
but you don't. You can't. You can't really avoid it, avoid it because you don't know where they're gonna be. So that's the Western news. Uh, the East Boston is in first place by fourteen games, which is the largest I can remember, even when the Warriors had won seventy plus games. The Spurs were great, So Boston in the east is the story there? And then we talked a while ago about John tay Porter and the gambling on games. So Adam Silver came out with statement saying that he could
face a permanent band from the NBA. So they're they're obviously doing some more digging. We haven't heard much on the show, Hey involvements. There's no show hey involvement. Okay, just stop right now. Don't be that journalist. I'm not saying. I'm not saying there has or hasn't been. We just haven't heard anything lately. So maybe there's some some forensic accounting. Innocent,
there's some forensic account Yeah. And then and right now he is absolutely murdering for them and the Dodgers. Do you think they could win one hundred and ten games? Oh jesus, it's not out of the realm of possibility. What are they now? They lost face their ten and five and they don't even have their rotation right really at all? I think I think they could. They could. They could easily go on a stretch where they win like thirty out of thirty three games in a row. So that's in the
last thing on the NBA. Jannis left the game last night. Combo him, karl Anton Towns, Brandon Ingram, Jamal Murray, and Kawhi Leonard are all battling quote injuries with three games left. That team is in trouble. The Bucks, yeah, yes they are, but again they're in a slightly easier conference in the East, and they if Joannis can play, he'll be the best player on the floor a majority of the time. So that's interesting.
MLB quick News Diamondbacks one, five to three. We live in Arizona, so I had had to mention that h and Jackson Holiday, the number one UH prospect in all of mb got called up to the Orioles shortstop son of Matt Holliday. And then lastly, if I don't know, wait did you see did you see it was Elie Delacruz, Elie Delacruz and the other day. Yeah, it was a really bad play by the center It was
a horrible play by the center fielder. You look, he looked like he took fourteen steps to get around basis too, so he was moving a spider. Yes. And then the last thing in the MLB, there's some controversy going on with the pitch clock and the correlation to all these injuries, pitching injuries a lot of rotation, like high level pictures are going getting Tommy John surgery. So that's I don't know if there's any correlation with that, but
it's just sad that I I heard somebody say it's all crap. And actually I know who it was. It was, I don't know who it was. I can't remember his name because a picture who did an interview who said, what it's about it's about them, No, no, it's about them not allowing them to use anything on their fingers. Oh interesting that that for the longest time they're able to use a kind of a slightly sticky substance.
And so that now because pictures are having to grip the ball harder, more stress on that, it's more stress on the rest of the arm a little
more. They said, you know, because they said, look, there's some sticky things that you say, it's it should be illeg but there's some some other things that pictures have always used that just allow him to hang on to the ball, he says, And he was explaining that in order for him to throw his fastball, he's got to hold the ball deeper into his hand in order to be able to spin it, and that puts more strain on the rest of them. Are more home runs offense benefiting from this too,
No, No, it's just a matter of that. It's just a matter that these guys throw so damn hard. But if the pictures, if the pictures can't pitch like they used to, well they're they're like saying, they're compensating. They're compensating. They're still throwing his hard. They're still throwing as hard as they were. It's just they're just having to throw differently.
And he said, that's what's messing up. There aren't because when they made the change with that banning the substance thing, you saw a significant drop and spin rate. So that was the big thing of if there's more stickiness on it, it was a little bit less about velocity and more about spin rate.
But now there's nothing they can use, right, so there are are gonna it sounds like they are having to grip it a little and they're and they're monitoring the spin rate as well, because it's just sure the spin rate's been kind of leveled out in the last two years because of the elimination of
all this stuff. But these pitchers are so dang good and talented to where they're going to figure out how to get the movement one way or one or the other right, and and if and if and the guys, it's because of the way I have to pitch right that that's what's hurting my arm. Yeah. He talked about the fact that you know that that he went the first game that he went out and had zero, nothing at all on his
hand. He said, I pitched fine, right, I had the same velocity everything I pitched, fine, said, but the next day I hurt in places that I had never heard before. That's really interesting. Where'd you hear that? Where'd you listen to that? It was on It was on podcast you know what? It was driving home from the from the basketball game Monday night, and my son had a bit a baseball podcast that he listens to interesting and they play. I can't remember who it was was. That's
okay, I'll do some because that seems pretty interesting. Last thing we got like a minute forty. It is Master's Week. It is master one of my favorite weeks of the year, and a little less of a large story than it was last year. But Live in PGA, guys are back on the same playing field right for the first time this year. Uh, do you do you have anyone that you think will win this week? Not? Well, I think Brooks kept can win it, but I'm not hoping Brooks.
Did you have a guy that you want to see you win? I'd love to see either either Xander Shaffley or or no, the other guy not Xander h h no no, no Jffer Cheffert, No, no, not Cheffer, Xander Shaffley or what can I what can I come up with his name? I'm looking at it. I'm looking at all the names here. Uh, it's killing me. Oh Victor, Victor. I Victory is my favorite golfer. I love Victory. I can't think of his name, but I love Victor Hoblin. He hit a hole in one today in the Part
three contest. I'd love to see Rory get one. It would be that would complete his career, which I like Rory. I'd be rooting for that. I don't think he's going to win. Yeah, I don't think so either. I do think I think it's either Scheffler. I think I think Shoffley's got a good shot out. Yeah, a lot of people are liking him this week. I would hate for like rom or again, Dustin Johnson or DJ would be pretty cool any of those guys. I don't know.
I think it's it's gonna be a really good week. It's supposed to rain on Thursday and then it's supposed to dry out, so it's gonna be a fun week. So those should be fun, pretty pretty spot on, all right. Steve left room and started soon he started talking. He was like, I'm out here, I know, all right, So hey, stick around. We have Clancy Shields, the Arizona Men's the tennis coach. Clancy. How you doing. I'm good, good, just got done with practice. I'm excited to be here with you guys. Let
me tell you some make some news to you. I'm not sure you're gonna like this, but about uh, the last time you're on I don't know, three four months ago, I said, Jay, let me give you a question. Who's the best coach at you will be? Jay didn't even know I was asking this. He was worried about it. So I said, you know what it says, Clancy Shields. Look what you've done to this program. How do you feel about it? How do you feel about that, Clancy when somebody puts that kind of pressure on you. Oh,
I don't know. I ques I think I questioned myself, and I know how to coach every day. I mean, we got sick last week, and that was my question for myself, is like, let's see if you can coach now, Like this scene is better than us and we have a lot of work to do before we get another crack at Stanford at or at the PAC twelve championship. So it's a you know, we have to be humble all the time, or you know, the proud always get humbled.
Yeah. So, well, you guys are eighteen and three, You're ranked your your four and one in the league, your game behind Stanford, uh coming off of PAC twelve championship from last year, you know, I mean do you get up in the morning sometimes pinch yourself and say, you know, how are we doing so well? And why? I mean yes and no. I mean it was kind of when we hit the top five ranking
for the first time. I mean, those are things that you're like, madam, I ever coach a team of this caliber, and so that was kind of a reflection point for sure for me. But then as I'm watching this team, I just I just keept believing every day more and more how good we are and what we can accomplish, and you know, I believe in the culture we've built here for eight years, and that's the guys show up each day to get better. And you know that whether the coaches are
around or the captains around, the guys are gonna work hard regardless. I mean, I think we've really built a good culture here, guys who you know, want to constantly improve and get better, and you know, we're starting to see the results of it, especially this year. It's funny because I wonder what's your what's your motorvesapara in terms of being like their golf coach or a tennis coach. Do you have a speech? Do you how do
you get them going? Or do you do not have to? Yes, I kind of allow myself three to I call three or four freak outs the year, and I try to manage those because I think once in a while the guys you got to keep them on their toes and you got to manage it. I'm not I certainly don't think you know you're yelling at these players all the time. I just think you're very direct with the kids and be honest with them and firm, and they want they want you to be honest
with them. They want you to tell them the truth. And you know, sometimes I'll last the guys after matches, do you want to know how I really feel? Or like this the water down sugarcuated version, And they always tell me they want to know how I feel, And so I tell them, and you know, I think they've They've gotten really good at just kind of hearing, hey, this is what we did well, this is where we fell short, and this is where we got to get better,
and let's go to work next week. So in your years of coaching, has that changed from the players where give us a water down version and now they want the real version? Has it changed? I think I don't think I ever gave him that option before, and now I've matured a little bit as a coach and letting them give options because ultimately, at the end of the day, this is their program. And I think that our players have a lot of pride in playing for Arizona and what it means to have that
bear down spirit. And you know, like one of our players he clinched the mat or he won a match last week and he's, you know, after the match, he's kissing his jersey and kissing the a and like, this is what it's all about. It's bigger than themselves. It's about the team, it's about the university and our program and the city of Tucson and all those type of things are really meaningful to what we do here. Now, you've been building this for a while, and you guys have been good
for a while. It's not you know, this isn't a flash in the pan. You know, teams can have that. You know, you have a good year because everything comes together for one year, then you kind of, you know, backtrack. You haven't done any backtracking. Why do you think that is? What? What are you doing over there that's letting you
to keep building and keep moving forward? Yeah, because I just feel like, you know, we have to reinventing ourselves every year, and like, if you have a good season, pick out the things that you thought you did well, eliminate the things you thought you didn't do very well, and reinvent your products each and every year. And I think that's a hard thing because if you're going to be a coach or it's each year. I mean, how boring is it to do the same things over and over and over
again? And so I think that's been part of our successes at the end of the year. I mean, we really have some in depth box our players and our seniors. They say, hey, this is the thing that we do really well here and we should get rid of it, and like, maybe we have an opportunity to grow in this area. And I think
that's it. Reinvent ourselves every year. You know, we lose a big chunk of our team this year, three of our seniors who've meant so much to our team winning matches, and next year is a brand new team. And like, I think, I'm so excited to get started next year because we have five new guys coming in. We have the number six recruiting class in the country, and it's kind of like, let's reinvent ourselves with new you know, new blood and try to send the culture here. And I
think that's just it. Reinvent yourself every year and try to do it better than the year before. And the good thing is you guys could establish yourself. And I'm guessing though, and I think maybe I talked about this last time you run. In order to get better, you have to play better people, and in your system you have better people like the ones in the twos plays the fives in the six and that means they get better too true or untrue? Yes, And I feel this year, I mean, we
have ten guys on the team. Our number ten player and he's red shooting this year. He was a Top five American, the top kid in Arizona, and on any given day he can beat our number one player. And so I think it's just kind of top to bottom. Were really solid. The guys are pushing each other. They're a pretty competitive group, and that's important because competition the cream rises to the top. And I certainly, you know, appreciate that our practices at times are more competitive than our matches.
And I think that's kind of the blueprint for Yukon basketball. You know, when I'm watching this ESPN shows on you know, Danny Hurley and their team, it just seems like, man, those guys just get after it back and when they get in the game, it's like this easy, right yeah, right. So you you mentioned Stanford, you guys, they did beat you a while back. Are they the ones you're chasing sort of right now? Like so many are you know, around the around the Pac twelve,
you know, women's basketball, some of these other sports. Are they there would you say they're the gold standard sort of right now and if you catch them, that's where you want to be. Yes, I mean I mean their roster. I mean they every year, they have the talent. Sorry I'm not sure, but we could barely barely hear you. That's what we've had. Something. We've got some something. Yeah, okay, go ahead. Yeah. Obviously Stanford is the you know, they have the talent to
win the national championship every year. And I think when we played them, we lost, you know at points here and there, four, three, and it was we you know, had lost two months and we were on like at twelve or so team Matt min Street, and you know what, we got a little complacent. And I recognize that winning sometimes does that, but I we got to taste the humble pie. I think the team's really motivated to get better, to get another at them, and we're excited to
the underdog again and have to go chase it. All. Right, So you've got you got Utah this weekend, it's your senior day. I'm assuming that you mentioned three seniors that have been a big part of what you guys are doing right now. Talk to give us a little bit about those guys. Yeah, well one of them are kind of our co senior. He's been here five years, and I think it's just it's our last guy.
And we went through a lot in COVID. You know, I think that that team was so special and all the things that we had to do together as a group. And so Nick with ive he's our senior from Toronto CAMPU, the second winningest player all the time in singles, and so he left it incredible here. And then we have our two hits and Scan maybe one door away Herman Hoyt brawl and our other stuff. I mean, all three of these guys have accumulated over four hundred wearing the red and blue. You
know we're gonna we're gonna meet. These guys really elevated our program to being one of the print programs three and you know, I can't thank these guys enough, but I certainly want to send them off on a high note. Utah got it last year in the Paball Tournament and so we're we're as hungry as can be to play these guys this weekend. Coach, let me go to a sensitive subject that may or may not affect you. We've had we had the shot putter uh Jordan, guys, and then we have the diver
Delinelennow. Does nil affect you at all? You know, it's all in the news everywhere else with football basketball. Does it affect you, guys? Yes, it's everyone's playing in this space and I we're all trying to figure out how to do it. And I'm a little bit old school in the stand of like, hey, if we really need to be or proact in it, we're gonna jump into it more. But I think right now we're we've kind of in a nice week spot of like, man, we provide
these kids a lot, They're getting an unbelievable experience. And I same thing is if you have a good guy, you know, they're not always looking at like what's in it for me? And I mean that was our talk before practice today and really using ucon battall as kind of our blueprint, like being everything that we do is selfless and not And I think sometimes when we look at nil in the world, you know, I think in some ways our priority get out of way. I'm speaking coach and not on football coach,
but I I just really appreciate our group. I think we I think everybody in our locker room to go to another school and make a big maybe and I say, I feel something, but we uh we we like where we're at. We built something special. I think the team is incredibly boiled to this group and what we're going to build. I think there's a great deal of appreciation for everyone in the locker room that hey man, we're all in this together, and uh you know, and I all part but we're
not. Well, it's refreshing because that's the good ole days to us. Exactly. You got a couple of purists here on some of this stuff, but overall though not Okay, Now you're coming down to, as we've talked with the other sports, you're coming down to the end of the PAC twelve season, which means the end of PAC twelve tennis. You know some of your I don't know, are you nostalgic about it? Too focused on your
season right now to even think about it? You know, where's where's you know, where's your head right now on this last season in the PAC twelve. Desperate to win the last PAC twelve Okay, but we've never won the tournament and our team is so hungry this championship. I mean, that's been our main goal this year. And I just our guys were just working our tails off just to prepare ourselves and get ourselves ready to go out on top. And there's a lot of teams in this conference, a lot of teams

Fox Sports fourteen fifty streaming live. I mean iHeart
radio. Wim Hey, welcome back Toying the ball Hero Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve, He's Jay. We have a guy Sammy with us for the next sixteen minutes. If you guys want to call, please do. In fact, somebody yesterday said where's Neat Goo Bin? Yeah? I don't know Howard's been quiet too? Oh, guys, a regular you were going, oh did he w say? Sounds like me just that you're a younger version passion Steve. I don't have any idea with that. Back to my
marriage, Steak. Maybe that's what the problem we'll see. Does anybody want to call five two, four, one six forty like the here for me and you still talk about the portal or whatever you ahead? I had a question we were talking about it a little bit about if h will get into the It's is it a ring of honor the Hall of fame? The ring of the Ring of Honor has specific criteria like a Player of the Year. Uh will get into that? Caleb will in the in the ring, We're
right behind you, unless unless he decides to come back next year. And there's a handful of guys up there who I don't think should be up there, Stanley Johnson, Stanley Johnson, Josh Green, Zeke Naji, even Christian Coloco. Uh you know, I mean, christ the greatest guy, But in terms of what he meant to the program, I'm not so sure, because it's like, granted, Christian was here how long two years? Two three years, and so this year was Ballow's third year, correct, and
Pele's third third year. Yeah, And I mean as someone that has been here all those years. And granted I wasn't here when Stanley Johnson was here or Ben and Coloco graduated, so I only got to see them for a year or two. But those guys have felt as though they have had a large impact on the program. Not maybe he's from a winning in March standpoint, but from a culture standpoint. Those were Tommy's like first guys. But there's a Sammon, there's a lot of guys over the years like that.
Sure sure to get in the Ring of Honor, you should be extraordinary, all right. And Josh Green, he's the one that hurts, not hurts. He's the one that I disliked the most because he's he's he came, he came to Tucson for six months, got in the Ring of Honor because he made the Australian Olympic team. So he's in the Ring of Honor for nothing that he did for Arizona basketball. Yeah, nothing, right, you know. Jared Bayliss. Yeah, that's the one I'm trying to come up
with. Jared Bayliss. Another guy came here for a year, had a great year, earned an honor, and got up there. I don't know that you can go back, and you can't retroactively do it, but I still feel like they need to make it a little different. Not necessarily harder, no, but different, something that so that somebody like Josh Green isn't up there while it took fifty years for somebody like Al Fleming to get up
there. Because I think if you ask a student, right, yeah, because I do think, and I'm talking obviously in the last like five years, if you ask a student who's a freshman or even a sophomore at the school, they go, oh, do you know who Josh Green was? Or even Zeke Naji. They go, oh, like the Dallas Mavericks player, like they wouldn't. They may not even know that he quit to you and now it's but if you ask, granted they've been here, but you ask, oh, like you know who Pelly Larson is or Umar Balo.
We gotta call it hi, you're on there and eye on the ball. After hearing you, guys, just this game, how's everything going? Fine? Thank you? A, Gabe? Do we get today positive or native normal? Gabe? Obviously Colon Boso is that went into the transfer. I've seen most are fans. I'm pretty okay with it. Oman Balla went into the transfer, so he's gonna probably get his money. I kind of struggle with his free throws. All I'm good. Yeah, I think that you're
kind of like the rest of the crew. Rest of the crowd. Go and enjoy your the rest of your career because we help people to replace you. Yeah, exactly, Uh yeah, next man up. Yeah, I have that mentality. Are you how about you, Dave? What do you think? Well? I was gonna ask you, are you comfortable with the fact that you know this team was pretty good? They weren't? You know, however, you wanted to describe how good they were. All five starters
are going to be gone, and Tommy's got I'm basically start over. It's like that have to happen pretty much every year as a fan. Are you comfortable with that or you just resigned to it? What do you think? Are you panicky about it? Do you get panicked about it? So? I'm not panicking. So I kind of learned, Hey, Tommy Lawyer is gonna recruit whoever he's gonna recruit, and and I'm not going to be worried about it because I don't have any control over it. So that's what.
So that's what my opinion. And I trust Tommy layd so And for all the dumbasses who wants to want wants to fire him, shut up. I don't even know what you're talking about. Do your head out of your ass. I was gonna say, put your head on you know. That's the cool Colm gave. Yeah, exactly exactly, Gabe. We appreciate that. Thank you all right, Gate, Thanks about any time, bear down,
Arizona Cocat. I wish it was a way that we could like somehow detect every time that that, you know, go go on our podcast list and find every time that Gabe is called and see if there's one where he didn't use the word dumb, matter something along the lines of poop. No, it's good. I wasn't sure I thought someone gay because he's calm. Oh no, he's here, he's here. Well, you said that, youve's
whole. Starting five will be like new. There is a chance. What if Caleb does come back and a yeah, let me ask you, are you okay with that? I think Caleb Love on our team next year would be fantastic. And Pele oh no, I'm talking Caleb. Oh if you said fantastic, I think it would be because you know what he you know what he provides. What's the Because I do think in this next recruiting class we have a lot of really really good guards and even kJ Lewis is kind
of that guard forward. Sure, but you don't and especially if if Boswell is heading to the portal, you need someone to be able to just be like, hey, this is the this is how the college game works. Okay, so let's I'm Tommy Lloyd and this could be a possibility. Caleb. I'm sitting there with Caleb and said Caleb, I Love you. I think you're great at what you do. You're gonna have to tone it down
a bit. You're gonna have to tone it down a bit. And if he says okay, then okay, then you you make him stand up to that. And then if he says, I don't know, coach, I think what I'm doing is great. He said okay, well then go do that over there. Yeah. But what if he says okay, yeah, coach, it's December and he doesn't do it. Yeah, now you're sitting in him. Now you're sitting him. No, you're sitting Caleb. Well, see, then you just you guys made an agreement that this is what
we need from you, and you're not doing it well. I think December and even the first couple of months there's definitely probably a learning period and a learning curve. Grace with that you had this this is called this year. No, this year was was Caleb doing Caleb well? But you could tell when when Tommy talked about Caleb, it was like tone it down a little because I think he had some twenty four shots one day. Let the other
guys get involved too. He had to tell I'm sure you had to tell them a lot, but you also kind of saw what happened when the other guys tried to get involved. Well, these were times when they didn't need kill him to go off. It's understanding. I just I just don't think. Okay, let me say it this way. If you say you can have it, okay, let's say he's available. Okay, Okay, you say you can have him or not have I don't know. I think I think I would want it, Yeah, and I don't because I think he's
a really good player. And you'd like to think that next year would be better than this, that he would be better next year than less, because you're supposed to get better every year you're supposed to and now he's been in the quote system under Tommy, they could build more of a relationship. If if, if it's my choice, and the option is take him or not taking them taking taking and I'm on the fence on that just really he just went back to player of the Year. Yeah, but there were circumstances.
Actually, my biggest concern would be how does that affect Jane Bradley. Yes, and and and that's a factor, and it is, of course it's a fact that but Jayden's not a high volume score because he didn't have to be. He's not a high volume score. No, but he's gonna try to. And I don't think that was one of my criticisms because he every time he had the ball, it was not to assist, it was to get down in the leg. I would rather have Caleb try to score than
Jayde and Bradley tried to or good luck to you. I think that backcourt next year is really good. Also that you have a moving to the new conference, I think you have to have a killer, like and I'm not saying Caleb is a certified killer, but like he's a guy that like he's been in he's played college basketball for a long time. The funny thing about it, he was very good this year. He was good this year, right, guess what he needs to be even better, even better, And
that's what it takes to win national championships. Yeah, but I don't. I don't if you choose that way and Tommy choose a good luck to that good luck. But I know it's it's tough because it's hard to compare U of A's team to the two teams that were just in the national championship. But those teams are doing things a little bit differently than the way U of A's doing it, and not saying one way is right or wrong. But
you look at Yukon and four of those guys are transfers. You have a stud freshman, and then you have a big that had been there for two years. This is the thing. When you have that, and Sean had that too, you have to buy into the team is the team, and and Sean didn't have that. Sean didn't get that, and new did Tommy to a degree. Yeah, And I think that kind of reared its head
when we played Clemson. Let me ask you this, Jay, two three years ago, two three years ago with the DS team homming along, homing along, and then in January hit a hit, a hit. Don't you think if in retrospect Tommy's team this year we did the same, maybe not a not a harder wall, but a wall. No, I know, I think I definitely, I don't think it hit a wall. I just felt like it got exposed, do you believe I think I think the word
exposed is a good word. But because even going into the last couple of games before the PACTLL Tournament, we didn't look great, and Caleb was having off nights. Guys were having off the last three or four weeks to the end. That Washington State game pretty much started then. And then you go to the Pac twelve Tournament. You lose to an Oregon team who had went on to play really good basketball. But it's like fourteen point lead at one
point. Yeah, this is the time where ideally, if you're a number two seed in the March madness, like you should be firing on all cylinders. And it was kind of the opposite. Even in the Long Beach game, the first fifteen minutes were like, what's U of a doing? And then they turned it on and then you play Dayton again. I had to turn it on again, and you play Clemson. Then you turned it on for a second, you're up one, and then it just is it went
downhill again. So maybe not a wall, would you say, uh, what was your word? Sposed? Exposed? Sure? But I think they hit a wall. Maybe a soft wall, but they hit a wall. Because you don't lose to the teams they lost to, you just don't. You just don't especially here Jay No No a great you know, but I
didn't call that. I wouldn't to me. I thought the games that they lost, you know, Oregon State, Stanford watching it, those were games where they just came out and just kind of shrugged their shoulders and said, okay, we'll play right. You know, that's not hitting a wall. He hit a wall to me implies you're worn out, you're tired, you got nothing left in the tank, or there's something happening or something happening. And I don't and I don't know. I'm not saying that they're doing,
but there was kind of strange. It was a weird end of the season. I think weird is a good word because it's like, you saw how good we were at times, and he could blow We could blow the doors off people and score hundreds of points and look good on defense, and we click, we rotate, and our bench is good. But they when you have games where it's like I hadn't seen you of a play game like they
did. Clemson, we shot what twenty plus threes, we didn't make any, didn't make any, and it just it felt like they kind of went away from what had been working. Yeah, yeah, I just want you to talk French one more time. Seriously, you're actually saying if you you're offered Caleb Love is either a wildcot next year or not, and you get to decide you would be on the fence the fence, Yeah, I saw what I saw. I got yelled at him my son for being on the
fence the other day. But I feel like if you put it that way, it's like, you know, he's a really good player. There's a but, and you'd like and no, and you'd not there's an ad and you'd like to think that he'd be better next year than this last year, because you're supposed to get better every year, that that would be a good thing for Arizona. But it mind's a butt. You can use your ad. But I've seen why. I just saw yeah, and it wasn't happy
with what I saw. Yeah, you could say that about almost any really good guard. We're talking about Caleb, I know, but you could say that there's a butt with almost any good college guard. The only one where Jamal shed this year. He was probably one of the best guards in the even Tyler Kohlick. But you could say Tyler Coleik had a butt, Like these guys are really good college players. But you have the side of Caleb Love, where if he's oh for eight, he's gonna take that next ninth
shot. If, like you, you have guys that's not going to change. I know that's not that's who he is. But you go to there's, however, many college programs in the country. You go to every single one and they go, hey, would you would if Caleb Love would want to come here? Would you sign up for that? From other people? Yep? Because they don't. They don't didn't have to deal with the un this year. There was a reason. There was a reason. There was
a reason we got excited though. There was a reason why North Carolina let him go, come on, let him he left. It depends on who you talk to. There's a lot of students. There's a depends on who you talk to. You left one of the guys that you love to have again, he was no longer there. I'll bet you if I'll bet you who's the coach there? Davis? You David Uber Davis. I bet you if Caleb Love gets on the phone with Hubert Davis tomorrow and goes, hey, coach, I know I can't come back here, but if I were
to transfer here, would you have me? Yes? I don't think so. Let me tell you something. No, no, no, if we could get I know it's too late now. But Brian Peterson asked him specifically about are you surprised about the success or are you're not playing to not surprised about the success of Caleb Love. He took him about a minute or two to get to the answer. Did Hubert Davis before he He didn't know what to say until he got there, until he said, I get him,
we're happy for him, or whatever it was. If him don this is we're happy for him. Yeah, that may be the only program then, the one that he left, correct, but or or or or whatever. Yeah, whatever it may be. Yeah, if if coach cal at Arkansas brand new program goes to Caleb's the reason why have you there's a reason why used cars are being sold all over No one knows a previous owner and what's
been and that's what's gone through that car. Well, and that's the thing with the whole the whole portal of now these guys exactly if he goes to Arkansas, I bet you all those fans didn't watch twenty u of A games this year. What's the story behind this prius well, this good Miles City miles highway miles. Yeah, I don't know. We'll see if he I don't know what he's I do Yeah, only time. Yeah, you just got to wait this out and see what I know. How this Prius drove.
I don't want to drive it again. But hey, the other car might be worse, Steve, Well, yeah, but guess what I have to research that other car might be worse. Yeah, cars, baby, car facts. All right, that's it for Well, we're not gonna We're off Tomorrow and Friday, so we'll be back on Monday. Argue with me exactly. Thanks for being here. We'll see you on Monday.
