Streamy Live. I mean I heard radio. This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jake Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Hey, welcome back to My the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve, He's Jake, and now we have Ryan with breaking news. This is I on the Ball, Breaking News on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Okay, we'll start with University of Arizona. Six Arizona football players make the East Shrine Bowl one thousand lists. Yeah, what does that mean? So there's the East,

the East West Strine Bowlers and what the game is. So preseason thousand guys they put on the list. That so it's they put together a top one thousand list of eligible players. Seniors were those in their fourth year of college and beyond. So the six from Arizona, they'll sneeze, they'll start it. Give it up. We got it going on here, man, Ryan. Ryan feels like he needs to sneeze, but he can't get it out, so he's just sitting over there. Okay, you got it all

right. So the potential you have a representatives running back Jacory Krosskey Merritt's get from New Mexico, Right, yeah, I remember his name. Will back linebacker Justin Flow, kicker Tyler Loop, safety gunner Maldonado, defensive end Trey Smith, and cornerback Trading Stokes. Okay, there was a pick a photo allegedly of Justin Flow on Twitter that you looked at. You said, that has to be photoshop, you know the body? Yeah, no, I

don't think that is. I think that's Remember when you first came in and last time you saw it, you were thinking, holy crap, did you see the Did you see the Twitter of him going crazy on the sidelines and

the responses to his craziness. You should we should maybe do look on Twitter while we still talk and and he gives information because there's a lot of response even from former u A players how they and people how he's kind of a he's kind of a loose cannon, but he's kind of a different personality. Right, He's got this body of adonnas, but he didn't play a whole lot last year or he's not in key situations. Right, So you know, he has this reputation of being a very good player dot dot dot,

but but he hasn't really seen enough playing time. Was this was this a high school thing? No, no, no, this is him kind of going on the sideline going crazy. Uh, like I think or players got a hold of go to maybe Justin Spears had a had a go ahead and do some stuff. Okay, let's move on to FC Tucson. They won their playoff game Sunday and they are advancing to the round of eight in the us L League two playoffs. Well, I think they won two games over

the weekend. They want they won Friday night and then they won on Sunday. So now they've advanced through the playoffs and they play again this this Friday. Is it Friday Sunday again? They're there're somewhere some out of town somewhere. Conference Final Friday one, Tucson. You spend Tucson. Okay, okay, continue continue, Okay, So that that game is going to be in Peoria, Illinois. Oh okay, they're taking on Project wh Yeah, I've

heard I heard that. I looked that up on the on the on the all right, but I'm you know, good, I'm good good for you know Pearlman and uh we had Sebastian Pine on the head coach. So they won a couple of games in the playoffs, which is great for Tucson, and I don't want to see they overachieved. But they've done well, They've done really well. Yeah, good for them. Do they do you know if they stream those games? They probably they probably do. We'll have to

see it by the time tomorrow comes. Yeah. I like to watch. You watch that stuff. I like to keep up on it. Like soccer. Okay, you and jadas too, now, I mean more like m the last but I don't, I don't. I watched a couple of soccer games that Steve thinks, like soccer is my sport. It's glutton for punishment. Hey, suckers, fun. I went to my first last year.

I lived there for twelve years. I get it all right. Trade deadlines coming up next week, the MLB jay, any any thoughts on who you're No, but one of my pitchers just got sent to the minor league. Tax is aiding too. His e r A was in the fours, so you know, But so they must clayt Kershaw's coming back this year, so that they had they had a clear space tight. Yes they did the Giants, Yes they did, Yes they did. Uh my boy, Oscar Hernandez. You know, Homer knocked in all three runs. They win three to

two. Didn't didn't mess. I got I got a I got a uh a message from listener Bill, who's like he was he was, he was, you know, sacrificing that. You know, they cutting the head off a chicken to try and get Ti Oscar to get into a funk. But it's not working for Yeah, did you find it nice? I found YESPN two, ESPN two. Somebod I haven't been found to me. It's it's near the top. It's got to be. So there's somebody that imitating him.

Is that the one you're telling me to look at? There's somebody imitating him? I don't think simultaneous on the sidelights and the in the oh oh, that is justin Floyd doing that. Yeah, oh okay, I thought that was them. Oh okay, I see and then comments, okay, yeah, all right, I got it. I got it. Okay, yes, I see it. He's he's a little crazy. But but there was a photo photo that I saw that was that him or not. I had to be him. That had to be him because he's built like that.

He's that was crazy, Bill. I mean, it was like that was two big culture buildings. Yeah, that's that's like, no, no, that was he he looks like that. Yeah, but now he's got to stop people in the in the secondary. Yeah, well that's just it. I mean, he's the linebacker. He's still gotta he's still gotta cover. How do you cover for you're that big? Well, good luck. So in the combet section you read that of that of that tweety okay right, okay. So the Olympics for coming up this week begin on Friday,

Friday open ceremonies the twenty eighth, I think so. I think so because Friday whatever that is sixth with with Lebron carrying the flag one of the flags, I guess that is. Well, it's that they're in Paris. It's gonna be like early in the morning here, right, I don't yeah, I don't know not could well, it could be it could be late morning, could I mean, if it's it's seventh America is, if it's if it's let's say it's at six o'clock there, it's going to be at ten

o'clock in the morning here. So it's always got about you be about you man, just need to know when it is, damn it right, just you know when you're special. Well, speaking of I didn't I didn't bring up this last week, but the MLB released their schedule for twenty twenty five and the Dodgers and Cubs are going to be starting this series season over in Tokyo in Japan. I heard about that again. Just really dumb. I gotta Dodgers every year. I gotta put it in bargo on this Dodger crap,

Like there's gotta be a limited amount of indulgent. God, you're killing me. Yeah, my gosh, we're talking about the Braves, about the Braves or the Reds they sucked. Oh god, there was another uh just what's his name? Pla Cruz tripley. He takes four steps between bases, seriously four steps, and he just hits the ball down the line and it's like it's automatically a triple. You think he could score? Yeah, you

know, it's crazy to watch him. Those guys still they still a lot of basis too, but like they still like four or five bases last night, and then they lost the bases and they lost. Here's something stat that I heard. Tony got caught stealing last night. Okay, only the second time. In thirty six attempts that he's been caught, you know since last year. He's fast, Yeah, he's big, He's a big du and I'm like, why are they batting him lead off? Well? Because he's

the best base stealer. Yeah, you know, so that's where he bets. He's leading off right now with Mookie Bets until Mookie Betts comes back. Yeah, we'll give him a bed. Yeah, jump out to a one zero lead right away. Yeah. I'm still in awe that homer he hit on Sunday? Did you see that? They were just the moon? You want to talk about a lawn tangle? Right man? You got all of that one. So back to the Olympics real quick. The opening ceremonies they

will begin at one pm Central time Central time, eleven am here. Yeah, I had it was about right, said ten. You know, I got it. I can do some of that math. Oh yeah, I know, the opening ceremonies and stuff. I've never been fond of that, but you know, once the once the competitions get going, well, I am. I went to the second one in Australia. I think it was no Greece. Yeah, it's too long. I was in the building I'm

thinking, I wish I could get out of here. Yeah, but it was because it's long, and then you have to get out of the traffic and then what are you covering and what are you writing about? Yeah? Just yeah, Well why was there to do the fanfare? Yeah? You know, the pageantry and the how do you feel about that? You know, the usual man on the street and stuff. Was it cool? Was the cool covering Olympics? Oh? Yeah, it was busy. I've told

you this. It's like like the climber's remorse. Climbers remorse. You heard this. Yeah, So you you go and you're climbing the mountain and you're thinking, God, I can't wait for this to end, and I I know, it's just so much work and it's just I just can't like. And then you get to the top and you're thinking, got to hope they asked me back. Yeah, because you know, you get through it and you're fine because it's eighteen hour days for four a month. Blah, bush

rides here and bus rides there. You don't have time to do much. And then you do it and you're thinking, God, hope they can come back and do it. So I did it twice luckily. All right, I just found that picture just to flow. That's him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now he's gotta stop doing photoshop the dude. The dude is unbelievably fit. Now he's got to stop. Dudes. Yeah, I mean, what's the point of looking like that If you can't stop, you can't do it. Yeah, yeah, no disrespect you do. But I like

I like I like it. I like his chances. Yeah, but no, we've seen the chances. He didn't get what you got here and you saw him and you're thinking, this dude, this is a dude that they don't get. I know what you were thinking. I heard you which you were thinking. I said, this is I didn't get. But it doesn't never get. But he didn't. He didn't to that for sure. And guess what, Oregon would have never let him go. Honestly, they would have never let him to keep him. Maybe you're right, all right,

So now he's got to prove himself. You know, it's gonna do that job. Yeah I did, but I can't find the article. I had it and I lost it. What is about? There was something about uh Brandon Ayuk. He's been one of the players in the news for NFL about whether he was going to be traded or whatever. I think it said he was gonna he was gonna stay with the Niners ultimately. So there now they're saying that I believe. So, okay, camp starts because he's he's still

requested a trade. Camp starts. The NFL camp started yesterday, right, yeah, yeah, already starts. So here we are pretty soon with NFL of talk, a lot of NFL talk, yep, football, I'm ready, all right, So all right, you're done. Okay, So I did find something on the on on Arizona and whether or not they hired a search firm and they're at Kevin Solon and the correct answer is yes they did. And according to Greg Hanson, they spent two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

I would said they spend two hundred fifty thousand dollars to go get Kevin Somlin. And here's the kicker. I hope Dan Garrel is not listening anymore. It was the firm that Dan Guerrero now works for, uh D, r H or D whatever it is. That was the firm. There's a there's a there's a picture in the Star and it's it's Robin's it's someone it's

Hikey and it's the guy that did the search. So j this is to my point, if you will, you know, and I know they could have come to Rivera and Gonzales. Well, and that's and that's it was all right. I found that in a in a column by Greg Hanson from back in the time, and he said the same thing. He said, what money well spent? And it's like no, and you know, everybody

knew that he was the guy. And then when when you see the way it turned out, it's like, you know, anybody could have you know, how much how much work did they do to find out about it? How much deficit? That forty five millions point two? Well that's the point

right there, that's the point too, that they wasted. Yeah, let me ask you two because you know, you, you and I are looking for jobs every now and again, and in a real world back in the day jobs and openings, they know they already know who they're gonna get, and that's something falls through. They know that they want somebody in those situations. You and I know because we'll have jobs. Yes. Well, look,

I mean we've heard from athletic directors before they say. And then it was Mark Harlan who we talked about because we asked them about Coyle Whtingham if I recall at Utah and we said, Mark, you know what if Kyle Whittingham leaves, And I think he said something like, I've got a file. Oh yeah, you know, I've got a fire that I that I go that I'll go to you know when that happens. And I think any athletic director with any sort of uh uh competence is going to have that.

And and so you go to that file. Now the question is are any of those guys in the file available to you? And that that's and that's where the search firm allegedly comes in. I'm talking just common man. Yeah, you're looking for a job. I'm looking for a job, and an ex job is open. That ex job. They already know who they want. They they they know the jobs opening for reasons. In some case. I mean like I did some hires where I had no idea. I had

to get some applications and I had to find some guys. But not all that guys. People, Not all the time is like that right now? There are times, you know, there are times where you know, Okay, this job is going to that person, right, but you're still doing the interview and trying to go to the stupidity of it. Yep, exactly, all right, we'll take our break. We're going to come back and

He just told you two lies. Okay, Yeah, we are neither fit nor healthy. So there

you go. Don't give us any tests because we feel all right. So this is you know, you start starting the busy season again for you guys at college athletics you have a high school? Is everybody getting getting busy? What what's this like for you guys right now and the types of things that you guys are involved in. I mean we're starting definitely to get busy with all the sports about to ramp up. High school I mean high school sports

are right around the corner. Obviously, you have a their athletes have been here training a lot of the summer, especially the full sports are getting ready to ramp up, so we are definitely busy, but our busy time comes more earlier because it's a lot of planning. Once once we start going, we like that time frame because then it's going. We've planned very well to execute what we need to do, so it's not too bad. So, James, are you still involved with El Tour? I'm asking for a reason.

As long as Jay's gonna ride again, we need to do something. But yeah, we are one of the premier sponsors of the Ail Tour. Again. We won the best events in Tucson and we have a great partnership with that. You ruined my punchline because I said, if you're not, you got to join. Because Jay, I think he plans on return. I'm doing the thirty two mile ride this year. James, when are you going to upgrade to do the full thing? Jay? That's my question twenty

years ago. I'm a little upset that it's gone. The ride's gone from twenty six to thirty two because I barely made the twenty sixth last year. So we'll see. But again, make sure the medical tent has a space ready for Jay. A little reservation not only a tent, but like a place to throw up ivy. You're those ivy things. Don't you have those ivy things? No, you don't have those right? No? Yeah, we had ivy few people after the race last year, but overall it was

a pretty nice clean race on a health aspect. Right. So I got a question from from one of our listeners. Let's ask it. Let's let's ask him why he came on, and then you can well, okay, because it's part of the question. Oh, okay, go ahead. Okay. I thought you were gonna ask him that weird question. No, no, no, no no. A parent in Bail asked one of our guys asked if there are free physicals in that area. So we're not going out

to that area this year. Future years we'll probably do more events, but we always partner with you of A and do this huge physical event and it's basically at no cost event. We have great partners with Tucson con Key stores and some other vendors that have donated, so we could put on this event at no cost to any youth athlete in the Tucson area. It's not out at Bail, it's not in Serta. It's unfortunately not at but Nora Valley. It is right on the u of A campus at the Cole and Junior

David Center on Friday. Okay, that and that's the indoor football facility. So so to get a physical tell us what what people have to do. The main thing if they could print off their AIA paperwork and bring that in filled out, it will make their trip a lot smoother and quicker through the system. But pretty much, they come in, they check in, and

then we start knocking out different boxes on the forum. So you have your vitals, your blood pressure, your height and weight, and then they go see one of our sports medicine physicians to actually complete the physical part, which is the most important part and hopefully it's a nice clean bill of health. And then you pass your physical and then you are clear to play. However, if not, we'll talk about next steps of what we need to do

to get you cleared to play. James, we've met a couple of times. I'm guessing you're maybe forty two at the most. Yes, yeah, you're pretty much right on forty two. There we go. Oh good, good, guess. So let me ask you my dumb question Okay, back in the day, we're much older than you, we had to turnaround and cough deal. I don't know what the hell they were trying to do with turnaround and cough. Does that still exist that? What the hell are they

doing? That is long gone? And main reason for that check for hernia, which that is that's been gone for about five to ten years. We don't have to worry about that anymore. I used to have to do that as well. Okay, so when you're checking, I got to know what you know you do that and what are you looking for? What do you what tells you if somebody has a hernia or not? So where your figures placed? Then if you have a hernia, you basically care some tissue in

there and they're able to feel that. Okay. Now there's different doctors that still do that test, and hopefully you don't have to go to one of them. Let the jokes come from the professionals. Okay, So back back to back to the reason we had you. We had you on the show talk about these physicals. Now, you know, you talk about the aia, but can middle school kids who also need physicals to play sports and stuff like that come and uh, uh, come and get physicals there as well.

We have middle school, we do have some elementary schools like Tucson Youth Football and Spirit federations. Those playing youth football, they're more than welcome to come as well. Our doctors are trained for all ages with that, so that we've done plenty of physicals. I think the youngest we did last year was six. Obviously at that point like why do you need a physical to play? Is there something wrong? But you'll see it a lot from your

fifth grade, sixth grade that are at an elementary school playing sports. They need physicals now. So if you can't make it into your pediatrician or you can't make it into your regular doctor, that's what we're here to help. Because one, we want everybody taken care of and we want you to go see your pediatrician or your primary care. But we also know how hard it is to get in sometime for these physicals and at the cost. I mean

we had one family last year that they had six kids. So if you're talking six physicals, you know, insurance cover some of it, they're not going to cover a lot of it. It's a hefty bill, so they might not even be able to play sports. Well, I was gonna ask you because how much would they save? I mean fifty bucks per physical? Twenty five bucks for physical. Most urgent care of cash prices around count are forty to fifty bucks. Okay, if it's your insurance. It depends on

your insurance. Sometimes it's free, but then you might not get your other physical. You're more extensive physical as a pediatric patient. Okay, tell us the times. Well yeah, first, well, first, how many kids show? How many kids did you do last year? Last year we did about six hundred and fifteen kids. WHOA yeah, okay, what times it is from one to five pm? Well, so you've got that many in that four hour. Yeah. We bring a ton of docs out and make

sure our goals does not make people wait a long time. So we bring a ton of docs out and there'll be a line here or there, and we'll catch up and move them through. But the goals get people in and out because once again, times valuable. It's school's about to start for people. Some schools have already started, right like alt Bell. We understand times valuable, So we want to get people in and out pretty quick. Okay,

walk us through one of these physicals. I mean, how much can you look for in that period of time that you're gonna have a kid. You'll walk us through one. So when after you check in, you're gonna get your height and weight. So that's gonna help a doc determined DMI. I'd be like, are you at a healthy weight? In order to do physical actissie. Then they also take a blood pressure, which is one of the big things because a lot of cardiovascular diseases you could tell off that blood

pressure. The main portion of it is spending it time with a doc. They're gonna get your family history, They're gonna get your own medical history. If there's any red flags on there, they're going to dive deeper into that. If there's not a ton of red flags, they're going to do their orthepedic as well as genero physical and if all goes well, you're out there

pretty quick. If not, that's when the conversation. So bringing up parents that knows your medical history is obviously the best and if you know there is issues, then we could work on that. I think there's like four or five where we actually caught some pretty significant health scares for the families and we got them in with some of the specialists at our Banner hospitals and luckily they were able to catch something before. It's a much bigger issue that maybe later

on in life. I was going to ask you about that, because we see it every now and again, like in college sports where there's the people exhaustion, people passing out and they should have cut that before. Or is it almost impossible to catch stuff like that? You know, it's really hidden this on. Some of that stuff, like the heat exhaustion stuff that's more just overworking. But you'll catch cardiovascular stuff from rare genetic diseases at times.

Normally it's not caught there, it's red flight there and caught at the specialist appointment. So like, for example, if somebody has a cardiology appointment, we're gonna send them to one of our cardio just specialists that may work with the U of A athletes or other professional athletes, and they're gonna break it down of like, hey, we're gonna run some special tests. Were like, obviously we don't have any machines there, we don't have an echo cardiogram

there, so there are potential that you adey further stuff. Well, once again, that's I think last year at of six hundred and fifteen, there was five that needed extra testing. So out of the six fifteen, six hundred and ten, we're okay to go do whatever they wanted to do. Okay, that's not bad. That's not bad. Steve and I are going to come and get our physicals. There No, no, Well, you're

gonna have to see some special I can already tell you that. We're talking to James Ready from Banner Health talking about the importance of physicals for these kids. And I mean, and it is important, right, I mean, we've always had to get them, But it seems like there's more stuff going

on out there. Does it seem like that to you that you know, you're you're hearing about these athletes you say, as we said, no college athletes who Alsodden, You're find you're Bronnie James right, you're finding out that they've got these serious issues. And I don't know if it's because we there's more media on it. But what's your what's your experience is stuff? Is stuff getting caught more maybe because of technology or something. I don't know.

I think it's a little bit obviously anything media y, especially bigger names like the Bronnie James uh last year when he got to USC right like stuff like that's going to bring it to the forefront. And you could get on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, any of these and see stuff all the time now, especially once you get into their algorithm. But the medicine has also gone so much better. I mean, there's so much more research done on athletes

than there ever was. I mean you could see that at any level, athletes are bigger, faster, stronger. That's changed over the last twenty years because the science is catching up to everything. I get it. So all right, so you're still we still be doing stuff with the you know, with the football team, you can be out on the field that kind of thing, because you have been. Recently, we got a great group of athletic trainers between the university and banner that your part. If I'm on there,

normally it's just to say hi to that few people. If I'm on there, something's really going wrong. But it's a great medical team at u of AH from the athletic trains, set doctors and across town. I mean there's a great group of athletic trains. I mean, that's why these physicals are important too. Is there's a lot of people across two cent that these physicals and their athletic trainers at the school might be the only healthcare professionals they

know ers have access to. So that's why doing stuff like this in community is so important to make sure our communities are all taken care of it. Isn't this one of the reasons why you went to school to kind of be

involved with this and sports? Correct? I mean I knew at a young age I wanted medicine and I love sports, and sports medicine was the perfect sit And I've been pretty blessed in my career between professional college and now working for Banner that we're able to take a lot of a lot of the stuff I've learned, our doctors have learned and provide the best care possible of the Southern Arizona. Yeah, all right, And then again, you do some you guys do some stuff with ELT Tour. How is that? You know?

How are the sports different? Right? Is there a lot of different stuff that you look for with different sports? Where is everything just kind of generally checking an athlete's overall condition. So for the most part, what the physicals, it's it's pretty general like if you know, if somebody's running cross country, you're maybe looking more about the cardio health compared to how is their

shoulder rotator cuff? Right? Right, But as you get higher up in levels, it does become much more oriented on the sport like women's soccer, you're gonna treat different than football. I do it. There's gonna be some similarities obviously, but you are looking at them, testing them different, and it's a whole other level once you get to that level of what's done interesting, brilliant, Yeah, no, yeah, needs and there's a big need

for this too, right, I would assume. So you did six hundred and some last year, you probably do more or if you never know, like we've I'm joke, one of our phones has been that's dedicated to this has been getting called a lot more. Just making sure we're doing it again because it's the same as last year. If it's two hundred, people were happy, If it's a thousand, people were happy. We just want to

take care of the community. We do a couple of these in the spring as well, because your physical is good for a year, So we'll go to some high schools early in the spring and be like, hey, do you guys want us to do a physical event ahead of time? So that way, you don't want three thousand kids showing up at an event like this because you do lose some of that, right, So that's why we kind of try and spread them out throughout the year. Got it, Okay?

So so this Friday at the Colon Jeannie Davis Center, right one to five. You said, yep, one to five. And for those who don't know, the Colon Jeanie Davis Center is the indoor football practice facility across the street from McHale. So that's where you got you guys will be. When when should they start showing up? I mean you could show up, but as I will tell you, last year, we had a line at one, we had a line at two, we had a line at three,

we had a line at four, and that line moved pretty quick. So whatever time you get there, go ahead and show show up. That's why we do it in the indoor because obviously we're in that nice two weather right now, we were able to keep more people inside to keep it cool. All right, Okay, James ready from Banner Health. James, thank you so much. Just question because one more question, Uh did you do middle

schoolers too, right now? I think he said that's right, Yep, he said he missed miss Okay, yeah, cool middle schools as well. James, Thanks a bunch man. We'll see you around and uh, good luck with all that, and I'll probably see you at all tour. Ye sounds good. Thank you guys, and Uh, I can't wait to see uh on that bike Jack, James, I'm gonna send you a note off off air later on. Thank you. All right, sounds good. Thanks James, talk you later. All right. Okay, cool cool, that

was James, ready for banner. Healthy cool, cool, cool, good information, good guy. We had. We had a lot of fun together. We work together at the Sugar Skulls and we had a blast, probably more fun than we should have had. So anyways, there you go, Okay, cool, all right, we're gonna we're gonna take our break, we're gonna come back. We'd love to take your calls five two zero four

one six forty. I'll try and find a link to all that somewhere and we'll get a posted up on her, try and get it up on our social media so that you'll have the information on where to go for those physicals. Because again, if you donate yourself, they are not cheap. So a good idea to get out there and get one of those. So stick around and we'll wrap it up five two, zero four and six seven and give us a call. If you're an Arizona men's basketball fan, you know

dot net. Streaming live on the iHeartRadio app. This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jacinzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Welcome back to it about Hero Fox Sports forty to fifty. Steve, you're Jay got Ryan with us. Welcome to Hand on the Ball. I say what you did there, I see what you did there. It's good to talk to too funny. Anyways, I'm just gonna leave it there. I'm not I'm not going to go any further with that? Anybody want to call please do?

What were your dream shattered? Uh? As you grew up hoping to be a ballplayer? Yeah? Something? You know what you know what's the worst killer is dreams? Girls? Women of course, of course, sorry women. Okay, okay, here's here's a question for you, and you gotta you gotta give me an honest answer on this. How much of you wanting to play sports had to do with impressing the chicks? Oh? No, we're getting chicks? Zero zero zero, No, that was Yeah. I

was too too involved with sports to do that. But the senior year one did create some problems. What is that? I know my dad was disappointed in me, just because if somebody got up in your head and you couldn't couldn't shake it and it affected your performance. She was a lot around for for for games, and my concentration level was probably not to the like, we have a call. Let's take this. Oh you're on the air and one on the ball. Yes, ultimate guy? About this? Ultimate guy?

Are you calling about our our our topic and I'm talking about some shattered dreams? Yes? Please? The perfect guy to be calling it this time? Man, I was in the eighth grade, right, and I was. I was getting a D plus and math at the time. My Matt pulled me aside and she said, what do you want to be when you grow up? And I tell her I wanted to be Maverick. What did she say, There's no way. Well, she's like, you gotta do a lot better, and man, I'll two to you. But at that

time, I was lost in the Bermuda triangle. Man, if you know what I mean, we know exactly what you mean. In the eighth grade. Hey, man, some people are gifted. Sure, I just go the wrong way in the wrong direction. Yes, yes, well that's guys, honest, that's honest. Okay did you play ball? Did you play ball? Probably not. I played baseball and soccer for a while, a little bit of football. Yeah, okay. And what did that dream end? Bermuda triangle? Well, that dream ended when I realized you don't have

to play sports to get chie there's one. Okay, all right, Nico. Good to hear from you, Niko. Hey, you guys think it? No, no, yeah, I'm not like you, guys. I wasn't doing that. But but if you were a ballplayer. He gravitated people did dave you know they did? You know I'm gonna I'm gonna play still do they still do? Yeah? And then you just get you in trouble. Man, My wife would be offender. You heard me using the word

chicks on the air. But what can I tell you? That's what's gonna offender, not the part about well that too, not the part about what nuts that part, that part, Oh, if you haven't offended her in five years, you're doing okay? Yeah? That that that part of it. That's any more calls like Nico just give his call fight to four one six seventy four forty when your dreams get shattered and when his old old seventy all I wanted to ask then that you know, at what point do you

think he's still going at it? Right? He's seventy whatever he said he retired and he didn't retire. Retire. He retired from you see, but he didn't retire. People again, when look, when you're when you're in that kind of environment, I mean like to me, Okay, you know I'm gonna be sixty five in two weeks, I'm not even thinking about retiring because I'm thinking if I stop doing what I'm doing. What would I do

with myself other than drive myself bat stuff crazy? And that's when people start to deteriorate, right, I lose I. You know, I if my two daughters at home right now, because if you know, figuring out what you know, what's next in their lives. But you know, if we had a period of time, it's my wife and I and she travels occasionally with with her job, and and you know, when she's gone for a week and I'm bouncing around the house and doing nothing, nobody had talk to

other than the cat or the dog while the dog's gone. But you know, it's like I drive myself crazy. Now he knows what we go through, right, all those things about you know, I come up with all the horrible scenarios and stuff like that. I bounce off the walls. Too much time to think, Yeah, I bounce off the walls. I was listening to today to a dayline about a guy who got kidnapped and was put in a box for seven months, and I'm like, I would have I

would have I would have died after a week. You know, I would have lost my mind after a freaking week. No, that would have said the dude would have said ransom note, can you, and then the family would have said, keep him, just keep them. We don't need to, you know, give us some money to get rid of him. So you know, I I you know, I don't know. I would have

lost my mind. And I do and I do that. I mean I do that, you know, even even if for a few hours I'm at home and I you know, I'm like total opposite, like not to be bothered. Don't talk to me full rank you can get tomorrow. Yeah, I can't. I have to have people to talk. I'm one of those guys. I walk in the house right and if there's nobody home, I immediately turn on the TV because I gotta have noise. Oh yeah, no, And I'm not even I don't even need to have Did you study that

way? Yes? Okay, yeah, I you know, I was the guy who would study with headphones and and and the whole bit. You know, I have to have noise. I I work, and my wife is the complete opposite. She wants it totally quiet, totally quiet. You guys are complete oppice. We are total, total opposite. Yeah, if you're listening, please be my guests. When he's gone. What the hell are you thinking about Jay now? I I I I do I have to have I have to have noise all the time? Did I like quiet? I

totally like what that's crazy. You worked in the newsroom, okay, I was readly in the newsroom that was on the road, the road, just standing on the That's true. When you're covering, you're going when you're covering a team. I mean, you know, to tell you the truth that the reason I got the basketball beat when I got it was because the guy who was covering it never came into the office. We had, uh he's he's We had a sports editor who wanted to see people. Yeah, Emery

Kramer r I p with him too. You know, we had a sports who wanted people. You wanted to see people in the office. Because remember we had those big box machines that he could write from home. And he never came to the He'd come to the office once every other week or so, and they kept on me, we need you in the office, we need you in the office, we need you in the office. And he wouldn't come in. No. No, Mike Downs came after met Jim Al's laker was oh yeah, Jim Jim. Yeah. One of the great.

Yeah. He was the typical sports writer. Yeah, and he just kind of audet you know, I don't know. I was a friend when I was an intern at the Start in eighty five. He was a good dude. Cover. He was a great dude. He was a he was a he was the perfect sports writer looking dude. Yeah, kind of the mullet and kind of like just didn't give me, won't said another becauss word another, didn't give a craw about just he just did his job, right,

you did, And really I didn't know that. Yeah, And unfortunately he got in a situation where they kept saying that they wanted him in and he just wouldn't wouldn't do it, and so they just they took him off the beat and then put me on. I did not know that, and then I knew, you know, I got a what year was that, eighty six, eighty six, eighty six. So he was for basketball. He

was not the he was not the basketball guy. Was. He was after Jim, after Diamond, after Diamond, after Diamond, right after Rich Diamond got fired. That was nineteen eighty five, because I came that summer, right and then Jim got the beat That next school year because I left it well the eighty He got the beat for the eighty five eighty six season. Okay, okay, did he actually go through that year? Eighty five six? So that was his first year? Was his first year I was,

and then I got it for eighty six eighty seven. You were the big writer for eighty six eighty seven, Yes, So why didn't you stay for eighty seven eighty I did stay for eighty seven eighty eight. They were you weren't the main guy though, was the main guy seven eighty eight? Yes? I wasn't aware of what a million story is about that I was the main guy for eighty seven eighty eight. No, I was the beat writer for seven eighty eight. No. John Michael Downs came in for eighty eight

eighty nine. I went to football. I asked off. On the way home from Kansas City, I made up my mind. I wandered off basketball because it's a lot of work, right, It was so much work. Also, the Cardinals were coming by that time. They announced the Cardinals were coming. So Jack McGruder, who was the football rider when it was going to be going up to Phoenix to cover the Cardinals, and so the football

opened up. So on the on my way home from Kansas City on the plane, I decided I didn't want to do I wanted to go do football. So when as soon as I got off the plane and I married at the time married at the time, no divorced, I was, yeah, divorced, WI. So that makes it. I did not know that you were the beat right in eighty sixty seven. Uh, and then and then

I went to football. But actually in the in the eighty seven football season, mcgridder got put on a special assign What happened was, if you remember this, Alfred Jenkins and John Horton h got trouble. We're in trouble for taking money from an agent. So they put Jack on to go investigate that and look into that. And so while he was doing that for it was probably about a month, I was a beat writer on football that season. And I was the backup guy because I was the basket I was the sidebar

guy at games, right, but I covered it. I was the beat guy for about a month while Jack went off and did did the story on on on Jenkins and and and Horton, and so I covered some guys and I did some travel, you know, I went to u C. L A. I went to Cal did some games eighty six eighty six, and then I was the actual beat writer in nine eighty six eighty seven, the four four three season, eighty seven Dick's first year I was. I was the beat writer for about a month, and then then I did basketball.

And then I did basketball for two years, and then eighty eight eighty nine. I was a beat writer fortwo years. Two years back football, here's basketball, two years football, Main guy, main guy. You got demoted yourself. I just steve, you know, to no one knows how much work it is. Yeah, I you know, I you don't get days off. I got here the bottom line. I've told this, you know, to a lot of people. I got tired of sports being worked. Yeah, I got tired of sports being work. Right. I was,

you know, I was voting for the Heisman Trophy. I was wenting for All America teams. And on a Saturday afternoon, you know, I'm covering, you know, when I've got to cover a game that night. I was watching football all day, but not to just enjoy and watch football. I was watching football all day and taking notes and stuff like that. And it wasn't dude. Now you understand what I say. When I'm not a

sports you get. I decided it wasn't fun anymore, and I went to all places, went over to the business section after after the eighty nine season, actually was the eighty well eighty nine football, ninety basketball, because I was a backup guy on basketball, so I went and I covered the pack. I covered the Pac ten tournament, you know, went to the n C Double as Arizona lost in the first in the second round in Long Beach. And when I got home from Long Beach and I went and I had

to cover baseball that year. But I told you know the sports that I said, you know what, this is my last year. I don't want to do this anymore. And I got out, and I've never regretted getting out. I got into journalism to do that. That's why I got in. I did it. I had fun with it, experiences of a lifetime. I got to cover Final four. I told you I got to cover National Championship football game. Yeah, you know, you know I got to do that. I got to do all the cool stuff that I read about

when I was throwing the paper as a thirteen year old. And then I just decided I didn't want to do it. I wanted to go back. I wanted to tailgate, I wanted to go out after a game. I want to have a life. I want to have a life. I mean, that's the bottom line. Because people don't understand how how much time you're spend away from family. Yeah, how much you it's every day. You

don't get a off for nine months. Yeah, because of the way that eighty seven eighty eight, the eighty eight basketball season developed, and it immediately went when off when Arizona went to the Great Alaska Shootout and won that. So remember back in those days, practice started October fifteenth. So from October fifteenth until I got home from Kansas City after the Final four, I had two days off and one of those was christ Dude, you're talking, I

did this, betwe that's why I know exactly what. That's why I said. And I thought, football, Okay, I'll take six road trips, you know, quikies, right, go Friday, come back Saturday night or Sunday, and you know, cover the you know, cover one game a week. And and that that to me was the people place I wanted to football. People will listening to us on saying, guys, you guys are weak. Yeah, you know. I remember at the Final four. Okay, I'm in eighty eight. I'm at the Final four pregame. It's like

an hour before the game. I'm at the arena. I went and sat at my spot on press who I was in the front row, right on the court, and I knew my brother was having a party and having his My family and everybody was over there. And I called them from there and they said, it's a dream thing. And I want to say, you guys have no idea how hard I've been working. I got here exactly exactly.

I told you the story in ninety seven. It was I think there was Mordich, Anthony or whoever in between games and they're in the championship game, right. Who would have thought, here we are and we're finishing at ten o'clock at night because we're doing five stories a day, blah blah blah. And it's Easter Sunday that day. We're having Easter Sunday at Hooters because there was the only place that was open. It was the only place that was open. I wrote about it. I wrote about it in a call.

Michael was manager. I wrote a column about everyone thinks this is a glamorous job, and I wrote about what we went through blah blah blah, and he I upset the hell out of him because they had a reader say, oh, Rivera, get him off the beat. All he does is complain about all what's going on. There's people on roofs in one hundred degrees and they're working in guys, you guys. I was kind of being tongue in cheek, but but they don't know what what it is it is,

and they don't know how much work it is. And look, like I said, time in my life. You know, of all the things I did and in my career from the time I was eighteen until now, you know, those four years where I covered basketball and then football are still the highlight. But it it I got tired of your life and happy your life trajectory would not would have changed dramatically because you need time for family, you need time for things. You know yourself, You just do you just do

you know? I tease Justin. I tease Justin because he's in it now. Yeah, Okay, wait till you kid, wait till you wait, till you wait till yeah, because you don't know until you get you don't know until you until you get into that. Yeah, okay, we got to go. Good show. That was fun. We talked about life, which is kind of strange, kind of strange. We also talked about other things. You don't want to get life from us. Somehow we didn't have

to get the dump button either, so there's so there's that. Hey, thanks everybody for being here. We'll be back tomorrow with more great guests. And reminder, we're off Thursday and Friday this week, so tomorrow's our last show of the week, so be sure to be here. We'll see you tomorrow.
