Breaking down all the exes at all. It's Steve Rivera and Jagen Salaz. This is I on the Ball on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Hey, welcome back to my the ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty from Steve Rivera. He's Jiginsaus. We have at least with breaking news. This is I on the Ball breaking news on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. All right, so we just found out that the Dartmouth men's basketball players could be identified as school employees.
And the judge passed this approved this motion, I guess, but it's going to be appealed. What do you guys think about that? Well, who do we talk to about this? Was it a break push? Yeah? Yeah, be careful what you careful, what you wish for? So it was the National Labor Relations Board. The Dartmouth basketball team filed an action or whatever with the National Labor Relations Board, and the official, the NLRB official ruled that they are in fact employees of the school. Basically said that.
I said, because Dartmouth has the right to control the work performed by the Dartmouth men's basketball team, and the players performed that work in exchange for compensation. I find that the petition for basketball players are employees within the meaning of the National Labor Relations Act, meaning that they can unionize. Also, on top of that, so Dartmouth, their VP of Communications, basically said,
we're going to see seek a review of the decision. She said, Dartmouth has a long and proud history of productive relationships with unions on campus, always negotiates in good faith when appropriate, and respects the rights of workers to unionize. However, we do not believe these students are employees. Now the issue here is again we said, this can be as you said, be
careful what you wish for. You want to be an employee, then you got to take all the things that come with being an employee, paying taxes on whatever compensation you're getting. Right, So now if you're you know, is tuition part of the compensation, So do you do you not have to
pay taxes on your tuition. Let's say you're a substandard employee, meaning you suck at basketball, you're not getting any playing time, and there's somebody else out there that is available to Dartmouth that you know, they say we want that player. Can you be biased? Can be dismissed from your from your job for lack of performance because you're not any good at your job? Can you be fired? And all of a sudden, here I am, I'm
at Dartmouth. I don't get any compensation anymore. Do I lose my tuition? And do I get kicked out of my dorm? What happens if I'm basically released from the team because I'm not very good? It just makes it way more complicated, Right, I never thought I'm older now, you're older now? Did you ever think this would come to it would come back?
I never thought anything like this would be kind would be happening. Even what we're in the na L and all that stuff, It's just it's just complicated as all A student, a basketball player represented saying no, this is a significant step for college athletics. We're excited to say how this decision will impact college sports nationwide. Whether it's right or wrong against the law or you know
what, it's bad for what's happened. It's bad for Dartmouth. You know why, Because what's gonna happen is they're not gonna have a basketball program anymore, because they're gonna be able to afford to have a basketball program. That's true, that's true. If you're gonna Killer Williams or let's let's just say someone here of Killer Bloff and you're making X amount of money, do you
want this to happen? No, you don't. Of course you don't, because then now your salary is gonna be right, Your money coming in is gonna be right. There's gonna be let I understand you know that they're saying, well, we're we're bringing in all this Well, at Dartmouth, you're not bringing in a whole bunch of money for the school. You're not. You know, if the Dartmouth basketball program is breaking even, that's about as good as you can expect. And now these guys they want, you know,
they I want mine. Well, what's the right amount to pay a Dartmouth basketball player? You know if if if Dartmouth basketball is a break even, uh enterprise, how much can you pay them? Yeah? You know? And and in the end, does this kill Dartmouth basketball or other sports? They're they're talking about forming an IVY League Players Association, so basically a union of the whole all the IVY League players. You guys, you know what, you're in the IVY League. You play in front of three four
thousand people at your games. You're not making a whole bunch of money. What are you gonna do? Yeah, call, let's take this call. Hi. You're on the air and I on the ball. Hi there, my name is Justin and I'm listening to the conversation about the uh the darkness right? Uh matter? You know, I'll tell you it's there. The IVY League is a little bit of a weird league for this to come out
of because they don't give athletics scholarships. It's all in need based scholarship, so it kind of factors in so like it's it's almost like it's a different beast than a school that's giving a pure athletic scholarship. So I'm not quite certain how that's ultimately get gets played out. Well that's a really good point. Well the thing too is if they do it and succeed at it, you know, other other teams and other schools are going to come up on
this. Are you gonna follow suit? But go ahead? Yeah? No, I was gonna say that was that? That? That's that You're absolutely correct, that's the cascading effect. Uh. And these guys are probably thinking, look, we don't have anything to lose because you know, we're we're you know, we're not on athletic scholarship. Our parents pay the tuition anyway.
You know, maybe there's some sort of political drive behind that as well, that they're going to see some sort of equity for other other schools around the country. Maybe that's maybe that's the drive there. I don't know, but the comments off there, Thanks guys, Hey, thanks for coming. Appreciate its No, I yeah, I mean and and I you know, that's actually a good point that I didn't think of that, you know there,
you know, are they getting in il are they getting compensation? You know, what are they getting if if they're not they don't have athletic scholarships? And what compensation are they getting or are they trying to get some compensation. Yeah, that's a really good point because it would be different for an IVY League school compared to a school like Arizona. Right purely athletics. They're getting victories, Yeah, that's what they're taking our first round victories from us.
Anyways, Well they should get something for that. We're we're not going to solve this here, but it's a it's a really interesting develop a really interesting development okay, okay, least so as we know the loss, I mean, the Oakland A's potentially are moving to Las Vegas in twenty twenty eight
would be the move. And the last Vegas mayor previously said she thinks the ACE should stay in Oakland, but she said today that she is excited about the prospect of Major League Baseball in Vegas and if they do come, if the Las Vegas A's become a reality, she will welcome them to the city.
Which one do you think she really believed. I'm not sure she knows, right, but yeah, yeah, you know, I mean, she she tried to tell she tried to explain what she meant, what she meant, but what she said was and you know, one of the issues because somebody found a lawsuit as well. One of the issues is that, you know, the stadium. Part of the funding is public funding. Three hundred and sixty million dollars of it. It's a billion and a half dollars stadium
or whatever. But you know, some of that money is coming from public funding, so people are unhappy with that. But and then there's also some people are unhappy about and one of the things that she talked about was she's unhappy about the fact as to where they're putting it. She didn't think it should be on the strip the Tropican across the street from the MGM. Grant, that place is already a mess. And that corner there, well, that's that's where the t Bow Bull Arena is. Right on the other side
of the freeway is where is where the football stadium is. It's Caddy Corner for for those of you who know, no, don't know, it's Caddy Corner from diagonally across the intersection Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana from New York New York MGM is directly across the street. And you got the EXCaliber on the other side. So it's I mean, it's smack in the middle of everything. And uh and don't planes land through there. I mean, it's right
by the airport. It's right next to the airport. But anyway, so she had to walk it back and look, the reality is a mayor of a city like Vegas, like Tucson, doesn't have a ton of power. The power is in the city council, the power is in the city manager. And she can say all she wants, and she doesn't want it there.
But but it's going to be there if the majority of their city council wants it to be there, and if their city manager goes off and gets whatever political support is needed from business community, whatever to get it there, and she can talk about all she wants that she doesn't want it there, and they can just in, you know, proverbally, proverbiallyite, throw to the finger, say we're coming anyways. But it's just a bad look for
Vegas itself to have their mayor saying to stay where you're at. So many sports teams have been moving to Vegas. Yeah, well that's it. And people are saying, wait a minute. We've got the NFL here, We've got a hockey team here, the NBA is on its way, there's a super Bowl here, there's a final fore coming right in, there's a final FORUR coming. What are you doing? Yeah, people want to go sports
here, people want their teams here. And it's funny. I don't remember how long ago this was, ten, fifteen, twenty years ago when people said there's no way sports is going to come right because the gambling. Gambling, No, it's it's part of it. Gambling now it's part of Okay, what else. Yeah, well, I was just telling you guys. The Lakers announced earlier today that they will be wearing Black Mama Inspire jerseys on
Thursday. So the date is two eight twenty four to honor Kobe, who co designed these jerseys and Kobe staff, who will be unveiled outside the Staples Center earlier that day. On two eight twenty four is at the anniversary of when he was killed that first day. Oh eight is his number, twenty four and his other ah got it pay like two weeks ago too, Okay, weeks ago, two years ago, yeah, four years ago. Four yeah, only twenty Oh my god? Yeah? Really well, funny man,
it all went, it all went bad after that. Were you how how did you take that when that happened. I was in Phoenix, coming dry I know where I was when I heard the news, driving back from Phoenix. I don't know. I'm not a Lakers guy, Kobe guy. He said, wow, just one of the all time greats past. I don't It's probably like Roberto Clemente back in the day. I don't know. I don't want to be remember when you do. Somebody want so, how
did well? You don't want to saying something like that I wasn't a Pirates fan, but I knew who he was and something. Yeah, he was a big deal. Thurman Munson was a Yankee, so I really didn't care. Which sorry, sorry, don't you know what I almost I apologize to I apologize to all Yankee fans, the sermon fans. That was incredibly rude. I don't worry because she's not going to happen. He's going to You're
not gonna see me anyway, have to deal with me. But no, you know guys like that that, you know, I don't know it was. I'm sure you you were. I remember exactly where I was. I was eighteen. I was at home. I remember my brother text me and I thought it was a joke and then I googled it and yeah, I mean I remember at school. Yeah, I'm from La Santa Wana and Kobe
was like my childhood hero. We would go to the Laker game every year on Christmas, like Tobe was like my birthday, and asked for Laker tickets
to see Kobe like we were a big fan. So I remember at school it was the day of his celebration of life where they had a big thing as center and we watched it in class, like in all of our classes, they just have it on because it was like that was like the big with no learning today, like we're watching Kobe's like celebration of life because that's how important he was to the city, Like he was la right, yeah, I know he was never do that something like for you is a kid
in for twenty years? Is a kid like did you I'll tell you mine, but did you ever Kennedy? Pat was Kitty still in school yet when he when he was sixty she don't know what, but his brother that was summer. It actually happened that like on the last day of school. Okay, but could you imagine that for an athlete in school like high school in English class and they're like, no class day, we're just putting on. Did you have one class or did you go to class to class? It
was on multiple so you just moved to class. I mean a wasn't like all day long. It was a few hours. Yeah, yeah, you know. I the only thing I can remember and I couldn't. I couldn't. I just have a vision of it. It would have been like late elementary school, you know, fifth or sixth grade, and uh, it was god it, I don't know if it was a it couldn't have been. Yeah, it would have been the World Series could have been in October. Uh. And a teacher put the World Series on, remember, because
the World Series used to be played in the day, remember that. And you know, a teacher was a big fan and they went and got the TV and but the World Series on in our class and that was just the coolest thing. But it was for somebody. No, no, it was just a World Series game that that. Yes, so for minute, I remember this having gone to a Catholic school in Santa Peu when the Pope died,
like in nineteen eighty whatever. It was like Catholic school. It was like an all day thing where you know, you not celebrate the life, but you know, you listen, you watch it. Yeah, it was kind of like erie. Yeah, just didn't have any didn't have anything like
that. Yeah. True. Well, like I met you know, like I know that, you know, there were kids, you know, growing up when the Challenger blew up, right right, I remember that too, eighty six and I was sitting in the Starnes room when that one happened. Yeah, but that's that just celebrated for thirty some years. Whatever it was that you celebrated us recognized. Yeah, we don't want to celebrate that. Yeah, all right, we're gonna take our next break quick. Is that
all you had? Yeah? Okay? Cool? Good, all right? Frank Middleton super Bowl alignment for the Oakland Raiders back in the day. iHeartRadio WIF. This is I on the Ball with Steve Ravera and Jay Gonzalez on Box Sports fourteen to fifty. Hey, welcome back to about here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Riverta, He's jigin zos now in the phone we have Frank Middleton, former U of a football player and also a player who played in the Super Bowl thirty seven. I think it is right if I got my initials correct, it was all right. Thank you Frank, Thank you Frank. How does this kid from from Arizona gift to play
in this Super Bowl? Dreams do come true? Oh? Man, they always come true. U. Great coaching from coach Dick and Dick Comy got me prepared to play in a lot of big games. Man. Oh yeah, Arizona with a great coach, with a great coaching staff and good friends. I think played a big part of it. Well, you're looking at looking at that Super Bowl now, I'm you know. I mean it was
a tough loss. I'm sure. We talked to Ricky Hunley yesterday and you know, he played in the he played in the Super Bowls in the mid nineties, and he said they still hurt, you know, having lost the eighties of mid eight Excuse me. You lost a game to Tampa Bay, which was that's kind of interesting because you played at Tampa and then you played at Oakland, so you played on both teams. How did that feel for
you when you're at the Super Bowl and you've played for both teams. All right, suck because you get beat by people you got to talk to and seeing friendship with it don't hurt as much as you get beat by strangers. But if you get beat by people you worked four years with, it went to ward winding. You got to understanding with man, it touches you a little bit more. It been great to be to win in that situation, but it was still fun and exciting just because I was playing free. And
so let me ask you. We talked about this yesterday, the excitement, all the pageantry and all the craziness for press conferences. But I think, if I'm correct, during that one, wasn't there a lot of controversy like players skipping or being arrested or something like that. Oh that year our quarterback went missing the tier in Mexico. It was the Super Bowl in San Diego. That's how went across the board and never came back. So yeah, I guess that was a little problem. Yeah, a little bit of a
problem. I hate to make fun of that, but that's all coming back to me. Well, let me ask you, though, so you know you're in the conference championship game, you're winning the game. You win it handily against the Titans. There was a point before the game was even over that you knew you were going to the super Bowl. You know what was that excitement? Like? How do you contain yourself to finish the game and
do what you're doing when you know you're headed for the Super Bowl? Man, as a grown man, you feel like that first Christmas when you got everything you wanted. You know, Uh, everything comes alive, every feeling you had. Uh, my first thought went to my mom. I'm from Baumat, single parent, low income housing, and and and and the US
stacked against and so when that came true, is more I was. I was excited about her because, uh, a lot of people said with what I couldn't do and what she couldn't do, it for us to make it to that level, coming where we where we came from, just made me like just grateful and happened. So Frank, if I do remember, you're a big dude. You're a big dude. Uh. So you've gone back home to Beaumont. I don't know if you drink or not, but do you ever have to buy a beer back in Beaumont? People know who you
are now? You know, I was in two son to loans. I'm more of a tequila drinking man in the front part about it, Like if I hang out with pet you know, I'm sing fifty this year. H So my crowd is fifty to seventy five. If I hang around people fifty to seventy five, I get a lot of free stuff. But if I go under that forty five. Did So, the older the crowd, the more stuff I get free. The younger the crowd, the more I got
explained. That's funny. So okay, so let me ask you. That was your mom the first person you called, you know after that after you won that conference championship game to get to the super Bowl? Who did you talk to and what did you say? Who did you start hearing from when that happened? Uh, you know, after that happened, that you hear from everybody because everybody want Super Bowl tickets. Well, of course, but
but it don't work like that. My mom and my wife was at the game, and after the game, Uh, my mom and my wife found their way down and we just embraced each other and kind of cried a little bit and told each other thank you from just being patient and h totally get ready to party, and that's kind of what we beg in. So I asked this of Ricky and we talked about the talk to you athletes a lot. So when they're playing the national anthem, you're there, did a tear
and and maybe a flyover or whatever? Did you tear up to realize, Hey, Frank's in the super Bowl? And two? Did you were you nervous before the game? To be honest with I cried before every game when it came to the national anthem. I don't know what what about that song like touch my soul, But just standing in front of all those people and listen to that sound play and people singing it just brought George to me, just knowing that the opportunities that we have here and the things that you can
do if you work hard enough. So every time I heard the national anthem, I cry. I still get emotional to this day because that's my you made it song in my mind. But so so. But the nervous part, I think I wasn't nervous. I was more mad because my siner wasn't there and my emotions was everywhere trying to figure things out. So it wasn't nervous. It was more like disappointment because it worked so hard to get there. For somebody not to show up, it's just kind of put a love
a black out on everything. Yeah, yeah, I can imagine, and so so again after all this time. So this was the super Bowl Thos played in two thousand and three. So we're talking, uh, twenty years ago, twenty one years ago like that? Okay, being that you guys, you know you lost the game. What you know, what's your memory of the Super Bowl? Does it sting you? Do you still think, well, that was something that not everybody gets to do. What do you
think first about when you think about having been in the Super Bowl? Man? God, I praised God every day for that opportunity to me, even though I lost it, it was my ceiling and it's something and I tell my kids out the time, like when I prayed for the Super Bowl, I never prayed to win it, because I don't think that far hear. I just always prayed to be a part of it. So just to be a part of it, it was a prayer and dream come true. And
I was just happy with that. Man. I just I'm I was just happy for the chance because so many people played in the league that don't get a chance to be out there to chee the confetti drives and the jets fly over and have all the tension in the water on you. Like I was
just I mean, you just get that accomplished feeling. But what what was the what was running out of the tunnel, Like, oh, man, I had to peep you know, you get the pre cow where you got ten minutes and everything you're gonna take the walk through and you make sure you're blathering losing everything taped up. And right when we got down to the tunnel and they start calling names, man, I had like the Russia, Like I just got to go to the bathroom. So uh, I guess that
was just my nerves trigging in. Man. But to sit in that thing and just look at our teammates. Our old line was real close that year. Uh, even with the problem with our centers. Just to sit there and say, man, uh we lost we lost the New England uh in the tuck rule the year before and we had some bad calls during the year.
To just get back there after getting after when when they stole that all Tuney farmers with the tug bowl in the snow and just make it back and stick together and make it because a lot of guys said pay cuts and came back for that extra year just to get a chance to go to the super Bowl. So for us to get there, I mean it was great. You had rich Gannon, you had Charlie Gardy, had Jerry Rush, had
Tim Brown. You had to see Wood, you had both woods like you had a Halls pass and just see all those guys get to that Promise Land, like like Tim Brown and and my quarterback rich Gannon had never been to get them older guys there. Man, I just I felt proud and happy for us. Man, So you're here at Arizona, are you praying, hey, I want to get to the league. And when did you realize, hey, I have a chance to play in the league. Uh,
you kind of don't. I was to junior college first, so I kind of took the long way around and coach Dicky found me in for Scott. So when I got there, my plan was just trying to straighten up and get a degree so I could go to social work and become a cop and have kids. And I guess my after my halfway through my first year, man coach Ki had to talk and he started telling me how he think I can do it, and from like, from that moment on, I kind
of hit the switches and start working my butt off for it. Wow. So okay, So now you see the game today, you see the players today. If you were talking to let's say Alignment on the airzon a football team, what would you tell him that it takes to get to where you got to? What? What? What? What's the most important thing that that player needs to know about what you did or what it took to get to the NFL get to a super You gotta be You gotta be selfless,
Like I think that's one other things one word that bever gonna lose. Use a lot of selfless man. You got to you got to everything behind you, and don't worry about your seble, but work towards your goal for everybody else. Work for your team, work for your mother, work for your girlfriend, work for your daughter, whatever you have, you you gotta you gotta put it on the line for them. And as long as you're playing for somebody else and not doing it in a selfish mode and selfish mindset,
I think you have a chance. But you got to play this game for more than just money. Uh, in fame you got to have passion and love behind it. So I don't know, I'm sorry. How long did you last in the league? How long did you stand the league? Nine years? So that's a pretty good that's a pretty good. So how was it to say goodbye to it? I don't think I got to change it. I think it said goodbye to me, Steve. So how was it? But how was it? Was? Really hard? Yeah? That was
that? Really harder was the time? Do you know? I mean, where were you? Well? I told my court tending up against New Orleans and I didn't really have a chance, a choice to come back or not, so I kind of retired off of injury. So it wasn't It wasn't like I played, uh nine years, I'm tired and I want to go home. Like it was. My body said it's time to go home, man, and that's what I did. But but what they say, I played until the wheels fall off. Yeah, yeah, we're talking to Frank
Middleton. There's on a lineman played in the twenty in the thirty Super Bowl thirty seven back in after the twenty two thousand and two seasons. So let me ask you. So you played nine years, which is a nice significant run. What has What did pro football do for you? Like, I'm sure you're doing okay, Now what did pro football do for me? Everything? Like you got my mama house, got me a house, and got my daughters. They they master's degree. It got my wife or r M
degree. It got me to a point where I'm forty nine and I don't have to work anymore. I kind of volunteer at schools and what youth movements and stuff. But just being a professional and taking care of being is kind of, you know, set me up for life, I think, Frank, Frank, let me ask you this. Could you adopt me? Man? Me and my wife talked about the doctor kids the other day. I don't want that. Well, first of all, Frank, he Steve could
be your father. So let's just let's just put the put the brakes on that. Well. But you know, but when you when you talk about that, Frank, you know it's it is an opportunity, and you know, not a lot of people get that opportunity by when you think of the numbers, but you know, it looks like it sounds like you've taken that. But again, you know, the whole idea. Do people when you're walking around town? Uh? Do people just know you were a football player?
Uh? Do you still look like a football player? I'm still fat. Yeah, that's not what I meant. But I know what you said. No, I mean, you know, you get them conversation with somebody say, man, I know you played football, You're just so big, and I'm like, I'm happy I did, but I feel bad if I didn't play football. But uh, like I said, the older heads recognizement, I do a lot of stuff with school age kids, so uh, some school age kids know. I'm pretty like a homebody. Man. I
go work out with kids and get back home. I don't don't move around too much. Who are you still in touch with? From you a oh man? Be staying this one? Idaho A bunch of younger guys for me. But I try to talk and talk to as many as I can. You know they do that alom now we can, right and I did the last two years. So that's always good to get back there and hang out with those guys. You gotta like what's happening in Arizona right now, even
though there's a coaching change. But you gotta you had to have liked what happened last season, specifically right ten and three. Oh Man, I haven't had a chance down here in Texas to beat my chest in a long time about anything except for basketball with Amazon, and so to be able to talk noise and knowing that it's going to the Big twelve next year and they be closer to home, I'm excited. And then that group of guys, Keena
and Babers like those those guys raised me. Man. Keena was there when I was there, so if he got anything that he had back then, it's gonna be a great situation. So to see them go back and get a bunch of dick Tony guys come back and try to keep the coach and moving forward and those young players. Man, I'm just I'm excited to see what we're gonna do again. Someone just texting me, we're talking to Frank Middleton. Former you, a former you of a Oakland Raiders super Bowl thirty
seven, nine years in the NFL. Frank, I mean, that's again, that's there's a lot of guys who don't get who don't get to do that, especially for you, especially from Arizona. Good on you for doing that. But Frank, we do do you now? Will you sit down and watch the Super Bowl? Is it a big deal to you to you know? And how do you watch? And how do you watch it? I do not watch it. You don't watch. I'm a fantasy football player.
Once my fantasy team lose, I start watching whoa, whoa. All right, I love my fantasy I got three or four fantasy teams though. But I mean, I'm one of those jealous type of guys. Man to work so hard to get there and have three days and do all these extra practices. Man, it just hurts my feelings that Seedy's guys make all the money and do half the work. It's like it's it's like getting the boys and your taking half your money do all the work that I have to do.
But yeah, but I mean it's cool. I just I just can't follow it. Man. I had like a rough game to me. Yeah, I kind of like I missed the rough part of football, like dropping your head on p like no more cutting outside than tackle box. I mean it's getting soft man and interesting from a big dude, exactly exactly. Hey, well, Frank, we do appreciate the time. Uh, you know, best luck in whatever you do, whether you're doing a lot or doing a lot of nothing. But uh, we do appreciate you joining us and
giving us some of your experience from the Super Bowl. I appreciate you off for the call, right, thank you, thank you. He's one of the good old U. Then again a shout out to Brandon Sanders who helped who have to get it, get us the interview with Frank Middleton. Brandon helps us a lot getting some of the alumni who we get on the show. Just keep an eye on the line just in case we're get to a call. I saw something this morning about the top twenty five college basketball coaches all time, all time. It's it's a website called New Arena. I've never heard of it, so lend some credence to it. But you know, whatever you want to say. Who you think? Where
do you think Tarcanian was listed? Do you think he was listed? Kind of give it away that he man, you know, because of his his reputation as somebody who bent the rules and those kinds of things. He was kind of a grouchy guy. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't listed, but I'd put him in the between twenty and twenty five. Yeah, okay, twenty five, twenty five, all right, twenty four Huggins. Huggins
Again, I need to do a lament. See my problem is, Steve Is I've had personal experience with some of these guys you know working n Cuba tournaments. Uh, you know, sitting next to him on at the at the interview podium. If you want to, guy, if you want to, that's a grumpy guy. Okay, would you have j Wright ahead or behind Calipari ahead? He's behind? Uh he had he's Cali Parti's twenty two, Jaye Wright's twenty three, which makes no sense. Jaye Write's a pretty
gone good coach. Yeah, he's got how many how you know, how many national cham too does he have? Right too? You got to and how many does Calipari have? I think maybe two? Maybe one? Maybe one one of Kentucky that's for sure. Yeah, okay, one Patino, you know it's Patino sixteen, seventeen, twenty twenty twenty, Denny Crumb nineteen, Billy Donovan eighteen because he went back to be and but but that was it, you know. Yeah, he's more of a coach. I'd have
him at like twenty six or twenty seven. Yeah, you know, I know he won two championships because he had you know, in the first time, you know, a long time. Yeah, he hit the jackpot with a you know, with a roster for a couple of years there. John Thompson, See how I would think that he would be a top ten? Yeah, seventeen, yeah, seventeen, give me your before I even go to the lud Olsen's he's probably gonna be like fourteen twelve, okay twelve.
The only thing that they screwed upon this is they spelled Olsen with a knee. You know that I was, man, Come on, Ludels were the best. O L E S E N what what? Okay? And Tom is a good number. Tom is o'header behind Lut probably ahead because he's won more championship. Ten ten, yeah, ten, Okay, here's the top ten. Calhoun nine, which is good. Cayhun went off you Bill self eight, he's like the modern day guy. He's like the modern day guy. Uh, this one's gonna really get you upset. Jim Beheim seven,
Oh say, I wouldn't have him my head of LUT. I would not. Plus he killed a guy accidentally. Legend six, Roy Williams okay teen Smith five, Yeah, eat off Rup four. I don't know enough about you. I'd I'd take him off the list just because he was racist. Bobby Knight three, Okay, who is who? That's easy? Two I'm trying to blink. Come on, easy, come on, coach k And of course John wouldn't been. I'm sorry, and at least that's the problem. Okay, that's me, my daughter's name, and I might not be
able to tell you. Okay, so I apologize. I know, I know I already looked stupid. I look stupid by not having it on the tip of my tongue. But that's again, that's what it is. That's who we are, and that's why you're here to get us that keep it fresh. No tickets, you have virtual tickets. You can't put that on you know, you know that's that list sounds okay. You know, I think Loot's in a good spot. He's not top ten, but he's you
know yeah, I mean again, he only won one championship. Let me let me bring something up because I know the Greg listens to the show. Now again, So you saw somebody notes, yeah, and then and then you talked about blue Blood's modern blah blah blah. You can't go from eighty four. You have to go from way before that because that's where they're established. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know Duke and not Duke, but North Carolina U c l A, Kentucky. They're kind of Kansas. Those
guys were blue bloods back in the father day. Yeah, their grandfather did and whatever. Right, But you know, to his point, great numbers, great numbers. If I just wanted to win one or two more, one or two more, yeah, then I'm with you. But you know, somebody put up a stat did you see this? It was on, It was on, It was on social media that Arizona's like, oh, one of the winners? Yeah, fifth or fifth? I think in wins since what uh the last I saw that twenty five years or something like?
What do they have the show for? Its? Well, a lot of wins? So did you get my boy? Right? Not a lot of wins when it matters, I like you, Well, there's that they went along again. You know what. She's a dude, he understands, understands. No, but I get it because I mean they've won more recently. Let me say this to you, and so what's done some of your buddies and some of my people to ask me questions? What's the knock on loot En Championships? Okay? First round? Okay, So wouldn't you think that
coach Kse suffers from that a lot too. Given all his talent, he has five, But wouldn't you think that he would have had more Court Williamson Williamson? That was court? Is that the guy that's playing with New Ordans right now? Oh? Uh? That guy, the big guyon Zion. Yeah, all those talented teams that he had, that was a shoeing to win a title and he didn't. Yeah, there's been I mean, yeah, Zion r J. That team is pretty good. So you don't want
to you know what I'm saying? He could have had maybe, but we know how college basketball goes. It's hard. Yeah, do we know how it goes. It's not like, oh, you have Zion, You're in the championship. To that point, they were like Arizona were shoeings a couple of times. They didn't even get to the final four. Duke were shoeings to get and they didn't too. To your point, that's how the beauty of March mad is exactly that's the beauty. That's why his buddies who ask
him that question don't get the scope of it. Yeah, am I am I wrong? Am I misspeaking? No, you're not. That's why having five is amazing got to call real quick. This party to the point. Hey, youre on the air, Nico. What's it was that list you were breaking down top twenty five all time college basketball coaches. First of all, my boy Ricky b should be top ten. He's got out the baggage though. Hey man, he knows what it takes to win. And you
know what baggage is, like Nico's middle name. So Nicle loves the bag, Jay saying not man, So you take the boats to a strip club? Man? I thought the strip cub went to them, and yeah, they brought it to their dorms. Hey man, I'm not trying to get too specific. How you doing? Okay? Yeah? Am all right man? It's cold weather. Man. Let me ask you something right now, February seventh, whatever day it is. How far is Arizona going? Realistically?
Man, I don't care softball starts something. How far are they going? They're probably gonna win it though. Oh jesus, he's got to the desert. He's gone to the desert. Have you got could you go to the desert anymore? Do you just kind of hang out? Man? I'm an engage man. Oh yeah, yeah, you didn't want to talk about it could do with somebody else. Yeah, seriously, thank you, thank so. To the point of, that's how difficult it is to win a title. You have five and great because that's they had on r J.
Who else is on that team? And then they went to the final four. I think they did lead eight or something. They were pretty far, you know, And was that a disappointment? Of course it was a disappointment, but that's what happened. That's the beauty of March. She's realistic. Well, yeah, that's why it's so hard because anything can happen. Princeton can upset Arizona. Dude can lose with Zion on the team, sure they
can, or they can lose to Arizona. Derek Williams right right, And that was probably another another one of those duke teams that could have won it all. That was a Kyrie Irving right on that team. I can't remember. It's not like they haven't had talent dukes the players. And then yeah, are you are you comfortable with the new coach John Shire. I think he's great. I think he was the perfect fit. He was an assistant over under coach k for however many a player. Yeah, I think he
was a perfect fit. And I think he's done a great job. And it doesn't seem like coach k has been super involved. Yeah, after he retired, he's been to he went to the Arizona game, maybe another one or two game. He's looking he did that was fine, But I mean, I think he's done a great job. They have another, don't They have, like the number one recruit coming next year? Yeah? What's his name? Okay? So what what's it going to be? Like I can
be during the Tournament's gonna be like in here with you in here? I don't know. I don't know. I'm ready for both Arizona and uh huh Okay, if aar Zone and Duke are playing Arizona, are you really you're not school? I can root for Duke when I'm not. My brother would root for Duke. Yeah, house divided. When Duke played Arizona, I called them I was a gentleman's and I called the master like watching on the big screen and you're reality at him. We kicked your butt? Nice?
Okay, all right, that's all I want to know. That's my school, I know. But still, and when you're you're intoucson, like you don't want Duke to win pretty much pretty much. Yeah, there wasna have fans have Duke And do you have a lot of Duke here? Yeah, like T shirt. I mean the growing up, my mom is always getting a Duke here. He Actually my daughter did got her master's over there. Okay recently. So you're not a hater. No, I've never hated Duke.
And in fact, but I had a Duke sweat rd for the longest time because a buddy of mine worked for company whose home office was there and one time when they said you need to come back with it sweatshirt for me. Yeah. I think I've had some touch big fancas when my mom was there is when they got good when bills that was that was the beginning of it. Thank yous from Phoenix. Yeah, okay, hey, good show today. All right, this was fun. Frank Middleton, appreciate it again.
Brandon Sanders, thanks for helping us get Frank and Jim Anderson. Good luck with the golf, the men's golf. We appreciate you being here as well. And we'll be back tomorrow. We've got another Super Bowl participant tomorrow in Marquis Flowers. Yeah, and uh, and we'll have some more talk about it, just some of the uh, some of the stuff going on around, UH, around the n C Double A. So be sure to come back tomorrow and we'll have some more super Bowl talk. Thanks for being here.
