I'm Steve Ribera, You're jigins Us and now we have at least with breaking news. Least is eye on the ball breaking news on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Okay, welcome to breaking news.
Earlier today, the College Football Association announced that the new format for the new twelve team Playoff, which will be starting next season, and it will be the five highest ranked conference champions in the twelve team playoff along with the
next seven highest ranked teams. What do you guys think about that? Well, that they had to make that change, right because well, the way they built it for six and six and six was that you had the five conference champion, the five Power five conference champions, and then a group of
five champions with the PAC twelve gone sort of. I think what this does is leave open the door for whatever Washington State and Oregon State do in terms of a conference or whatever, that they have a chance to get in if
they go crazy. But it'll be the it'll obviously be the four UH power the Power four now Conference champions, Big twelve PAC twelve, I'm Big twelve, Big ten sec ACC will get in, and then somebody from either the group of five or maybe that includes Washington State and Oregon State or a sitate in Oregon State have a shot at that large or something like this, and then the next just seven highest ranked highest rank right, the committee is still
going to do the rankings, and basically the top twelve team, the conference champions, and the and the every other seven highest ranked teams probably theoretically the top twelve teams in the rankings get in the tournament. You know, they're already talking about haven't even played the first twelve team tournament. I'm already talking about expanding it just sixteen because it's only two years. The contract runs out in two years. The current uh TV contract for the playoff runs out in
two years. They're already talking about in two years, let's go to fourteen or sixteen. They have to go to sixteen and just end it there. I mean, come on, twelve is weird, sixteen is perfect UH and they'll go to sixty eight if basically by the time we die and It's the same thing with the NC double. As they're talking about going to ninety six, they're adding adding uh, who does adding thirty adding thirty two teams, adding thirty two teams and then a bount your thirty two will have a first
round by Yeah. I think we talked about this a while back when they said, yeah, no, what point do you get what is wrong with it? What point? What point do you say there's gotta be some specialty to this. You play the season to become specialists or be qualified for it. There's nothing wrong with the everybody gets a trophy time of situation. You're you're hey, we're nine and two, nine and fifteen, but hey, we're in the door in the tournament. There's nothing wrong with the tournament.
There's nothing that needs to be fixed with the with the basketball tournament. Nothing. It's perfect. It's the most exciting time of the year. It is. I love single elimination basketball, totally agree. All right, okay, I'll stop up next. The PAC twelve appointed. I think this was today too, Teresa Good to lead the conference as a new commissioner. I know last we were talking about whatever that means, right, I mean that was
the first thing that people were saying. Okay, so she's the commissioner of what the PAC twelve, the dwindling PAC twelve. Well, I mean they're still on the for two more years. You know, the PAC twelve still has a seat at the table, for instance, in the college football playoff and other things where So, I mean the thing the misconception is that PAC twelve has ceased to exist. It hasn't. It's still got two teams left
in it as an entity. It exists, right, which is kind of weird, But you know whatever, I mean, she's she was the deputy commissioner, so she just basically stepping into the job and playoff cough is gone and whatever millions of dollars he was making doing that packed the Pack twelve saves. Yeah, I think they god be interesting to see what happens with the PAC twelve. It's sad but swindling down. So maybe she can turn it around and make something. Yeah, build something out of it, build it
back up. It still won't be the Pack twelve. Never again. Yeah again. Now moving on to baseball, the PAC twelve first Picture of the Week was announced this this week and it is Arizona's Jackson Kent And this is the third time in the year Arizona's picture got the first picture of the week of the season. So that's interesting that Arizona is always starting off strong.
Well, they had a nice weekend, right Northeastern any think Northeastern like it really Northeastern, but they are ranked twenty third and Arizona is not ranked. They're not ranked and they're playing right now though. Yeah, and they win two our three, So that's a good start for chip. Hale like kind a clip of his of his inurvim and said it was a big deal to them that, Yeah, Northeastern came here ranked in Arizona was not. Then they took a little as we say, Steve, you try to get some
momentum with that. Okay, Okay, I got miss momentum here. Yeah, I won't argue. Okay, they maybe they do have little momentum because they're playing Utah Tech right now and they're up thirteen to four, or they're just playing a bad team, right, that's what you said by as U. Two give them no credit matters. I mean, yes, it matters. But four, I'll let you guys enjoy your time. They're winning you they're winning and that's all them and that matters, right, they're winning right.
Yes, that's interesting though that they always start with packed past three years Pactal Picture of the week first one, oh yeah, the last three yeah, the last three years okay. And then in the USA today came out with the softball coaches pool for softball today and there were seven of the pack. Twelve teams were in the top twenty five. Arizona is number twenty two. Who's whore's you? Two? Three? Four? I lost? Okay, if you can't still number one, I think, yeah, why did
I? I saw that one? They could be yeah, could be. And Stanford's in there. When did Stanford get they played they played Texas last week solo on TV. When when did they get good? You know they've been hot and hot and cold for a while, so yeah, I did see that. But again another another situation where Arizona came in unranked and now you know they had you know, they beat our Arkansas in their in their
tournament, and so they're they're ranked. Well, they started the season five and oh and then they lost since then, but the softball team has been playing strong. And then did you guys see that buzzer beater last night. You talk at U c l A. The last second it was blocked and then he got a rebound and made it so they won by one point. Was given the guy got ejected and yes, oh my gosh, that was an assault, Like there wasn't assault. I'm like, what are you doing?
And and and in that fraction of a second before you did that? What what in your mind set? This is the thing to do is to throw this guy at forearm, shiver to the throat right as the ball goes by, and everybody's looking at you and Cronin doing what he was doing with a few bu he said the m F word. I saw that one I saw that, but that that was I'm like, my thinking is that something like that. It's not only just you're ejected, but you need to miss
another game or two. But you know what, So what came of it was a he got tossed as he was out for the rest of the game, and then they lose on a buzzer beater and the final play was was was didn't they get a steal? Well? No, the thing was Mitt Cronin got so out coached on this job because what they did is they did that thing where they passed the ball to a guy out of bounds on the baseline and then the guy who threw the ball to him just darted down the
court. It was their guard. He was wide open. They thrown and there was nobody to stop him going down the lane. Now he did go shoot the lay up high off the glass, and they missed, but they had a guy there to to get to lay it in, get the rebound and laid in. And it was the ball game. And you know, ul A had like a two tenths of a second to do something with and they were on the other end of the course, so they couldn't do anything with that. And for anybody at UCLA who thought they still had a shot
it something, yeah, they're gonna. I mean they're fourth in the twelve. You know they still have a chance. I mean, because they do well. I think that there was one was gonna probably lose to them up there, Pauli and then I'm not so sure anymore. Looked really bad right today on February twenty first through whatever today, I mean that was ul A was the game. We were down by nineteen right and gay back and they were gonna play in use Paulie and we'll see. I think that's the only
one left. They're not very good. I just it was such an airport team, but they don't play at airports. Sounded was kind of a rivalry for a few years, you know, and then now there's not. The rivalry is gone. Yeah, the rivalry. You have more stuff that was it. I have. I have a couple of things just came into the as he does this farm, the Wildcats, the tennis team, which we
know is very great and always play as well. The Wildcats completed the i t A National Indoors in New York City and for the first time in program history, they defeated number three Texas on Friday and number ten Texas A and M. They did fall to number six Wisconsin, but now they're number nine in the country, the highest rating ever in the program history. Wow, did such And we you know, I don't know about how you feel about this because you know, some of the coaches we talked about, who did
we think is the best coach today? I mean right now, we came up with him and Shields. I mean, he turned that program around for nothing, nothing, They were nothing, you know, With all due respect to everybody, else. He's done a great job. He's done great. Yeah, and like recruiting too, with like all those international players, and yeah, he's going a long way for their players day right like this day, like all four years and there's only isn't only ten people on the team.
Yep, it's a crazy small number, small number of people. So yeah, good, good for Clancy Shields. I'm still looking for this post that I saw that was talking about, you know, multiple bids for conferences in the NCAA tournament, and I remember who put it up, so I almost hesitate to quote it. But they had five for the five for the Big twelve, which makes sense. I can't remember if it was five for
the SEC or the Big ten. Let me tell you, I'm not gonna be here tomorrow, as we know, we haven't said ye, but I'm part of a group of media up in the state and I'm going to Phoenix tomorrow too. We're gonna do our own bracket to kind of project what's gonna happen. And a big ten is one of my my things. I have six, I said, Okay, then it must be the Big ten.
So then it must be that the SEC, the A C C, and the PAC twelve are each only getting two according to this uh wherever's predicting this, which I thought was really I mean, when we think of the a C C they've got sixteen teams or whatever, we'll only getting only getting two bids powerhouse. But I mean, and I remember there was one was North
Carolina. I'm assuming the other one was was Duke. Duke's number eight right now, Yeah, so I can't but they had above yeah, it had nobody else getting getting a bid, which I thought was kind of crazy to imagine that that that the AEC would only get two. But I could be wrong, It could be could be way wrong. So we'll see. But you know, right now the PAC twelve has got Arizona, Washington State. That's it right right? Well, Evenardi, I'm just going through now,
leonardis it with two? American with two? Uh? Acc with four with four? Real quick? Uh? It looks like North Carolina, Duke Virginia mm hmm. And I don't see the other one. It could be Pittsburgh. Yeah. So anyways, just uh man, that's gonna be interesting. It's gonna be it's gonna be a crazy time. We're gonna be a fun time. Yeah. No, in fact, we're gonna be gone. Uh, let's if you want to say anything about the Yeah, let's do that.
First of all, you're gonna be gone tomorrow. It's either gonna be me and somebody Sammy's on Wednesday, Sam's on wednther canna be me and Samuel al I might get I might get a guest host in here. But then we found out over the weekend we got a bad break to your Vegas show. No, we haven't mentioned anything about our Vegas show. We we you know, last couple of years, three years now, right, tried to do uh the Friday show in Vegas when we're up there for the packed off
tournament. Already we know Thursday and Friday, Wednesday and Thursday there are no shows because we're both up there. I'm working the tournament. We've all we've always had time to do it on Friday because the games, what's the first game on Fridays at six o'clock Vegas time, and with daylight savings time not in play yet, it would be seven o'clock Vegas time, So that gave us time to do our show till five o'clock and then also over to the
arena. Well, we got two bad breaks. One daylight savings time is before the tournament, and then they pushed the games up to five o'clock, so the game is at five o'clock Vegas time and twoth On time, which doesn't allow us to do the show. So you giving me a three day break, three days off, so that week to get packed off tournament week. We will be off the air Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. We'll be back here Monday to break it all down because right after then, you
know, we'll have NCAA Tournament brackets and the whole deal. But unfortunately, no show from the park MGM on Friday, right, okay, but we'll be up there doing whatever, yeah, doing the things that we do. Yes, So anyway, so there you go. So no show on that day. So anyways, but I'll be in here tomorrow and Steve is gonna go off and play in the sandbox with his other NCAA tournament buddies. Yeah, leave me here all by myself. You'll be fine. You'll be fine.
Your pay, Samuel, will you pip me in? Yeah? Yeah, you know he has you know, you know he can. Good. Look, let's all right, let's take our break. We're going to come back, Mike Andrea uh still will be the innner. No, we have a b I'm sorry, we got a break. Andrea fourth there so well we your calls right, I'll give us a call in the next segment five two zero four win sixty and then Mike Andre at about four thirty five.

They've they've wanted a few times, they've wanted four times. They were runner up last year to BYU. And they go play in a tournament Hawaii, take you a couple of weeks or take a week or so off, you know, play some golf. Then they go to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico for their next tournament. Anyways, three three Arizona guys were in the top nine. Yanick Maleik finished second. Zach I guess I would read this as poo. I don't know if it's Paulo p O l l o A finished tied for third. Uh and who is the other one? Yeah, I don't know, but I have a question for both you both you know. Okay, So, so we've watched a pretty good basketball team. They're number four in the country now, one spot from last week. So would you or or how could
this not be if Caleb Love is not the player of the year? Oh yeah, I mean who you're gonna get it from Washington, Washington in Washington State. I think it was so but I don't even stop there. What are they twenty something and we're for like yeah, yeah, no, stop. That's that's that thing of why Loot didn't win more Coaches Coach of the Years in the conference, because well, they're Arizona, so they should be good. And you know, uh, you know, Caleb Love is good
because the rest of the team is good. Let's give it to this guy who plays on the team that sucks but is really good. Stop you agree with you? I'm just Washington State doesn't suck. I know. But there's not a player in the Pac twelve. No, there's player in the pack pub that I would rather have on my team than Caleb Love. Yeah. You put Caleb Love on any other team in the league, and they are one hundred times better than they are. Yeah. Here we gotta call real
quick. Now let's take this higher on the air and on the ball. How's it going today? What's up, Ryan? That's a beautiful day of the ballpark. Oh you're at the baseball game. I just, I just, I just I had an appointment I have to go to. I was gonna say, you must not have a job. That's called retirement. That's my job. Nice. Who do you have? What's up? Well? Just you know it's it's gotta be Caleb Love. I mean, you know, I can't see anybody. You know, I don't know anybody else.
I don't know anybody else conference. No, you don't. I mean, who's consistably that good every game? You know? I mean he has his days where he scored like five six points, but that triple overtime game. Should have a lot of people should have woken up about him. I mean, he had it, didn't have a great game until the overtime, until it really mattered. Yeah, you know, and again there are days that he has a great game and they win, and their days that we plays
doesn't score a million points and they win. And so he's right, he's certainly you know, kind of the guy. Yeah, he's the he's the reason. He's the reason. Yeah. So all right right, it was great right out there for the baseball. Yeah. Look, good man, I've got it on on my computer here. It looks like a nice sunshiny day. Yeah, fifteen four. All right, all right man, sounds good. Thanks Brian. We will talk later, Okay, Yeah, I'm
not sure. The guys from Washington State, there was another guy that they the one of the announcers kept saying, Oh, he's gonna be in the top ten, he's gonna be a lottery guys from Colorado. It was Colorado. That's it, the guard, the guard. Yeah, they have him as that, they have him as the lottery guy. Stop, that's the good I'm trying to go through rosters right now. Stop, what's Colorado. They're not ranked with their record, Yeah they're not. It's just weird how
they kind of threw this guy out and says what it might be. Even the kid that there was on a recruit he's on Simpson Simpson. No, it's not kJ Simpson, it's it's another kid. No, No, that's another kid. But yeah, but that's another year, yeah Simpson. No. But the guy that there, there's a guy from Colorado who's on who's on a bunch of draft boards. And I saw his name on the draft boards before the Arizona played Colorado, so I kind of kept an eye on.
Yeah, and he's stop, uh, I mean that guy. I'm not sure the guy would start for Arizona, right, And and yet you know they've they've got him on on on a bunch of mock drafts. I'm like, who is this guy? I can't think of his name, but yeah, well I think kJ Simpson was the other guy that thought. But you know, none of them compared to what what Caleb is doing. Cody Williams is a six to eight wing guy. I'm looking at, uh a mock draft on the athletic and they've got him as a number four pick.
I'm like, I did not see that game, the number four pick, no playing for Colorado neither year, No nor there. Well, I think maybe he didn't play here because I think he and Tristan the Silvera were both in there. But I saw him in there in the game up there, and I didn't see a number of four factor. Yeah, taught trouble in that game. But I think kJ Simpson was the part of the other guy that they thought. I said, even if he has a great year,
it's still not better than Caleb's what he's done for his team. Right, So you're saying Caleb love for Pack twelve Player of the Year, PAC twelve player. Yeah, he's in mid season for other things in that. Now, what do you think about national He's probably not the national player they're gonna give. They're gonna give it to Zac eighty. But but he could make second or third team All American. Yeah, yeah, for sure, Yeah for sure. But you know, remember where we're at, We're not in
the central hub of media. So yeah, Jane Daniels won the freaking Heisman Trophy over over Michael Pennix. I'm still better about that. Steve, You're not never bitter, You're never. I'm bitter about that. Gay, but you might want to check your DNA. You might son gave the homie. Do you think gave the homie? I don't think so. What did you think about Jaden Bradley coming off the bench twenty one points fair high, fantastic, awesome, great game by him. I think that he probably uh it
was that was due for him. You know he would I'm saying he he does love to attack the basket. Yeah. Speaking of Okay, I bookmarked this Evan Mikawa, buddy, Yes, did you see his uh top ranked freshman list? Please tell me Arizona's got a guy in the top five who brother no top five? Yeah, of top freshmen in in in the country crevas Nope, all the crevas is twelve? Okay? Who kJ Lewis?
Oh? Yeah, well, what's what's the criteria? It says uh uh measures overall player value using the box Score stats, his his rating, you know, his BPR rating, and he's got uh he's got the k A J. Lewis in the five spot. Who was above him? A guy from Kansas read Kentucky read Shepherd, guy named Stephen Castle from from Yukon. And then another Kentucky guy Rob Dillingham. Okay, if you got two of the best freshmen in the country, why are you where you are? Did
you see no hey, because he's call a party. Did you see Patino's rant? He did? He went off? That was team Then you wonder, then they wonder why guys shut down on them? Yeah, you know, rip rip rip this, So I still need to shut up. I'm out of here, man. He did. He went off on his boys. Yeah, and then he says, I didn't really go off on anybody specific. Y, you did names. He named names and positions. So
go to the Mayakawa all purpose guy. Whatever you see. If I'm sure Jim Bradley is still there, let me see if I can find this. Yeah, because Jane Jane Bradley is not a freshman, so yeah, no, no, no, but he's the guy that you know, the impact guy. Right. Let me let me look that up right now, because your top ten players. Let's see looking looking looking, looking looking at don't you don't yell at me, don't yell at me, don't yell let me
play raiding? Is this Jade and Bradley at eleven overall? Okay, but in Arizona, in the Arizona system, specifically Arizona where the best player who they you know, because because of the Pelly Pelley where he would be, Well, that's Jane Bradley. He's ranked highest among Arizona guys. Really, Yeah, and then you go down to forty five, pell at twenty nine
and Umar Bellow now in the on the top fifty at forty five. But didn't it was that the same list that the individual players the impact that they have. Yeah, I and Pelle was at the top for a while until Jayden took over. Well, yeah, okay, the rankings on on the Arizona on Arizona, Okay, Jade and Bradley, Pelly Larson is in order, Lumar Bellow, Caleb Love, kJ Lewis, Kylon Boswell, Keisha Johnson, and Crevis. Okay, but you again, you gots give me what's
the what's the headline on that, what's the category on that? It's just that their overall uh importance or yeah, the BPR his whatever I can't Bayesian performance rating, that's the that's the analytic that he's developed with his own theory. Importance to the right, and it's and it's basically the importance to the team and Jade and Bradley is at the top of that. You know, that'd be a good question for for Tommy. You know, if I throw
this at you, would you believe this? You know you want to come up, he yelled, He would come up with something. He doesn't like those like two, these two deep questions. He doesn't like those who coming from He'd be like, I don't know, Steve, I don't think about Yeah, I just come to practice with game plan, want to pass the ball. Well, well, here's the funny thing about it. We're just talking about player of the year and and and he falls fourth or fifth on
that list, right on his team, honestly. Yeah, but imagine this team without Caleb. Yeah, yeah, right, Well Pella only scored five points on side, right, but he played well. And Pella can play well without scoring a ton of points. He can play well defensively, he does a lot of he did you know you think we're having this conversation. Do you think he's an NBA player? No, you don't, not at all. No chance. I wouldn't say no chance. Maybe fifteen chance.
You don't think he can go to the league, Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, but not that he's not somebody. Is he an NBA player? Could he be? Could he make it in the NBA in some shape or form in a few years? You think, well, he's a senior, he's got he's leaving it if he goes to the league. Yeah, no, I'm still sorry to say, but no, but hey, I didn't think. I don't think mconnald's going to be one thing too, But then
all the other guys too. He's got, he's got. Hey, he I can't say sorry because he's gonna make a ton of money wherever he goes, whether it goes back home or hell. Yeah, And he's he's great because he's a great spokesman for the team because they you know, they put him up on the put him a lot. Yeah, he speaks well, a good dude, very good player. But everyone must have better players here.
Yeah, that did not make him wondering if is what he does because we often talk about because of Evan Mike, how we all often talk about important he is to this team. Sure, you know he plays well. They play well because he does so many different things when he's when his game is up, it's up in so many areas of what they do. Defense, ball, handling. Uh, you know, making score some points, making some free throws. So in your guy, your group, do they
say, yes he is Yeah, I totally agree he's. No he where would he play? He'd have to be a shooting too, And he's not a good shooting. He's not that good shot. He's a decent. Yeah, but this is the NBA you're paying millions to be Yeah, yeah, you gotta be really good. Yeah. I don't want a kind of sort of good doctor operating on. Yeah, I want an NBA doctor operated on. Well, okay, he's a good doctor. No, I don't want to do anyone. He's almost like not powerful enough. Yeah, he'll play
pros somewhere though. Oh yeah, yeah, of course, make a ton of money. And he'll call me and say I don't know, I don't know. He's gonna have to find the right spot. The guy can shoot it, there's no question about that. Yeah. But let's remember too, and this is a bad comparison, uh with with oh I just had his name. He left because of uh, he's not because of Gilbert Arenas.
And he went to the new Mexicano Ruben Nun Thanks you is good. Look at that pulled off so he left you because of Ruben Dougle, because of gilbert A. Renas. He scored twenty eight twenty nine points a game for New Mexico conscoot it, score it right. He was an NBA guy, but he got a lot of shots up. Yeah, so you know what I'm saying that you have to be a certain player. I'm looking. I'm looking to see you. I've got the NBA draft net up. You pulled
that one from I don't really know it was good. He's got everything up on that computer. I know he's not a computer. I could have pulled will bind him if he said went to Georgia Tech, you could have pulled that too. You know, sometimes Steve, it's like right there and other times I don't know where it is. But yeah, let's go. Oh we're way over. We got to go because he's going to cost him in
two minutes. All right, we got to get out of here. We'll be right back with Mike and Andrea and we'll talk to him about the Timmy Lloyd contracts back around. I'm Steve Rivera, your chicken dollus least at least what are you pointing the code? Now? The phone microphone is on and okay, okay, we're having a hard time reaching. Hope he calls us any moment now, uh to talk about what's going on? If Youvey and his time as the a D I hope you got
a raise. Yeah you know, I mean I had a very short stinted circle K a long time ago. So I don't know if that maybe Mike's Mike's had a job for a shorter amount of time. Here we go, here we comes. Let's take this Mike Candrea, is this you? This is me? How are you? What do we call you? Now? Are still the introm mate? No? Well I am for another few days? Yeah, no, March. I've been dying to ask you. Have you ever had a job for a shorter amount of time than this? Absolutely?
Not not not not like working a record, not like working at Circle K or McDonald's or something like that. Well maybe maybe I worked out a gold kart track one time a couple of days. How was how was your moment in the sun? It's been good? Did you have fun? Do you hear me? Yeah, we hear you. You know you probably got an echo, but trying to ignore that because it's our phone system. Is that better. Yes, yes, did you have you? I mean, have you been having fun? I have been having fun. I mean it's
been it's been challenging. It's very enlightening to to get a I guess, thirty thousand foot view of everything. You know, when you're coaching, you're in the submarine, but you're only in a small submarine for your team. But here it's you get a little bit of everything. It's it's pretty daunting. It's it's quite a challenge, and especially in today's world. You know. So, Mike, I noticed you sitting or standing up in your area
and obviously the president acknowledged you, and you're the goat. Obviously, how was I going to say this? Shoot? You know it is to get old. Oh. The one thing I noticed is you have you have your colleague slash, you know, the ideas and all that coming up to you and hugging you. I mean, people love you. People love you, and I know that's not your intention, but that's how much respect you've you've earned through the years. How does that feel? Well? God, you
know, you just hope you've treated people right. And I love this place and I love the people, and you know, like I told them when when Bobby called, I said, I wanted to be a band aid for this little moment, but I wanted to be a good band aid. And I think hopefully it gave everyone a little bit of comfort that, you know, I could keep the chip sailing in the right direction and keep it out of troubled waters. And and it's it's been fun, you know, it's
it's a wonderful place. I mean, I've forty years of blood, sweat and tears. It's it's kind of kind of hard to just walk away when when especially at a time like this, when it they need people, you know, And I think Desiree said it perfectly. We have to cook on to one another and continue to move forward. So did this hire happen a little quicker than maybe you expected? Did you think you're going to be doing this a little longer? I mean, what did you think? Where did
you think the hiring thing was? When you when you agree to do this? You know, I did not know anything. Yeah, I definitely had no idea what the timeline was going to be. And like I told Bobby, whether he needed me for a day or a week, a month or a year, I was prepared to do what I could do for him. But yesterday about ten o'clock, I had gotten message that I was having a meeting with him, and that's when I found out. Oh well, and and and ten o two there was a a tickers saying that she was hired.
So it happened very quickly. Yeah. But so, yeah, you weren't. You weren't involved in any of it then, is what I would like? All right? No, absolutely not. So how Kney deep were you able to get into anything right? Anything? Uh, the Tommy Lloyd contract, any anything, any involvement there with Tommy Lloyd. Yes, I definitely was a little bit. I mean, I'm definitely aware of what was
going on there. And uh, yeah, that was that was kind of when I took took the chair, I said, you know, one of the priorities that we have right now to get done and number one was getting Tommy situated, and we got a chance to get that done. What are the surprises that I didn't know? I'm not sure why I didn't know that you were kind Heikey's right hand man, or at least assisted him for a
couple of years. How did that help you kind of step in that role for a little bit because you kind of party already knew what was going on
financially and otherwise, well not really. I mean, the role I was in with Dave was a special advisor to him, but basically my chore was to work with the head coaches and so I had a monthly breakfast every month with the head coaches and we just talked about you know, best practices and any issues that they had and felt like I could be a voice to get stuff up the ladder to Dave and give him a pulse on what our head coaches were thinking. And I thought it was very effective and worked well.
And the reason why it works so well, I think is because of the involvement we had with Tommy Lloyd and Jeff Fish. You know, both were had a total buy in from them, and I think that made a huge difference with all the other head coaches to know that if it was important to them, then it should be important all of us. Well, this is a good group, man, I'll tell you. I love I love this coaching staff. I love the staff around here. I mean, we've got
good people and we've had some challenging moments from COVID on. You know, it's been it's been rough, But I really believe that with the right leadership and sounds like desire will be the right one. She's been through it before, that we can come out on the other end in a better place. You know, I'm saying here thinking to be a fly on the wall or on the table or wherever around a meeting with all the all the head coaches that at Arizona. But what are from that? You know, what are
the big issues? You know what what's kind of what are kind of the universal issues for the coaching staff and you know what's on their mind and how to do some of this stuff? Well, you know a lot of it was, I mean anything from recruiting, you know, how can we how can we get better at when we have people on campus to number one, say money number two to give them the best look at what this place is all about. And so we started doing a tailgate with football prior to football
games, which helped everyone. But it was just a hodgepodge of different things. You know. Sometimes it was like for the first ten minutes a little bit of a bitch session, but then after that it became productive and and someone would step up with an issue, whether it's recruiting, or whether it's dealing with players or you know, mental game. I mean, there's so many different things that we had all this expertise in the room that unfortunately we
were never getting together to share our own expertise. And I thought this would be a great venue to be able to put them all together in one run and use one another and use the expertise on one another. And you know it was it was fun. Well, it's funny you call it a bit session, but that's when you really get to air things out and speak your mind. I mean, that's how things get solved. Yeah, there's no
doubt. I think that one thing we learned was that, you know, if we could have a collective voice on something, that it probably will get done a lot quicker than if we have twenty people. But you know, bitch about something but not really falling on the right ears. And so I try to walk out of there every time with a kind of a plan to bring to Dave about you know, here's here's the three top things that I see right now that we need to start taking a look at. And a
lot of it, you know, was the big twelve transition. And I mean there's so many things right now that are moving parts that it just gave us a chance to sit down and talk. Is one one collective group. So one of the things that desirely talked about bringing the group together no egos. And I just told Jay earlier, says, come on, you have a group of good coaches who are very good at what they do, very good at what you do. They wouldn't be here otherwise than they're successful.
How do you not have an ego? But if that's a requirement of no egos, there's a little you know, okay, a step back from them or requirement. Well, yeah, they all they all have egos, but they all have the same common goal, you know. And I think that that's the nice part about coaching is it's a fraternity and we all have a different process to get to the end result. But we all know what the end result looks like and feels like, and you know, there's challenges along
the way. We know that the process isn't a straight line, you know, it's sometimes a crooked line to get there. And so I just think when coaches can get together and listen to other coaches, number one, realize that they all have the same issues. But number two that there's a lot of different approaches to get there. You know, Tommy is a very unique guy. I mean, his teams look like they have fun, and he's
a very good communicator. And you know, Jed, on the other hand, was a little different because he has so many different guys that it's being able to manage the people underneath him to get the job done. And then you have, you know, sports like tennis that you know you're kind of at bare bones and it's an individual sport, but it's also a team sport.
So I think we all have a lot in common, and sometimes it's learning different verbiage or getting a better idea of how to communicate something I think is the gift of coaching. You know, That's why I think we all go to coaches clinics. It's not like the game's going to change, but sometimes how people do it and how people say it can make a difference.
So what I'm certain, I'm certain there were a lot of fans out there who got a little uneasy when it came out that Tommy's contract hadn't been done, that they were closed and now it might not be done for a while, and stuff like that. From where you sat both as the intermad but also is it just somebody in the department. Is there sort of a everybody taking a deep breath now and saying, Okay, we got everything kind of
set. Now we can move on. How do get I think it's been a while since we've been able to kind of take a deep breath and feel good about what's in front of us. And I think right now, you know, I feel good with our football program. I think Brent Brownham is going to be a wonderful leader. He is going to be tremendous in his community. He's a dictomy Disciples who I love dearly, and you know,
he his son means something to him. And I think Tommy has proven a point that this is a very important part of his future because he wants to be here. And I can't. I can't think of a better person to run our programs. And then I mean, we just we have a whole list of good coaches here. I mean, I think Idias had one of her best years ever as a coach, taking what she's got and doing the
josh he's doing right now. And you know, Chip Hale and Caitlin and and I mean the list goes on and on and on if we have some really good people that love Tucson and love this university and will continue to work hard. So Disrae starts March the third. Are you going to stick around in a role similar or are you going to become Jay and I and just
kind of slubber out? You know, that's a good question. I think my my present contract with Dave was up like in June, and and but I think I'll have a conversation with her and see where she wants to go and if I can be of any help. You know, I'll definitely be around. But you know what, I can't wait to get back on the golf course. Of course. I guess the bigger question is do you have
to go back and share an office with Danny Martinez? You know, I gave it up to Danny, and I don't think he's gonna let me back in, so I may have to I may have to just put my bag down when I come uh in there. And but you know, Danny's uh, Danny's He's been a servant for me for a lot of years, and I owe him a bunch and I'd love to see that he's enjoying what he's doing well. I think the two side appreciates you. You've a definitely appreciate you. You're one of the dudes. I mean, you're you are a
goat. You're a goating in probably and just normal because you're a normal dude who happens to be very good at what he does. Yeah, well, I appreciate that, you know. It's it's this place has been a blessing for me, and you know, it's hard. What's really scary is that I look back now and next year will be forty years and I don't even feel like I'm forty years old. But it's time goes by very quickly when
you enjoy what you're doing. And I must say that I've enjoyed my time here at Arizona, and hopefully I've made a little bit of an impact. And now it's it's being able to give back, you know, And that's I kind of what everyone does at certain times in their life. Mike and Andrea, thank you very much for your time. Get back to work. The world's probably you know what. I I for one like, I hope
to see you around. I hope you're around somewhere. You got it's at the end of the day man, I'm I'm I'm meeting now you appreciate Mike Kendrea. I we love the guy. I love the guy. You're really we wanted the best ever right to come through the department with not just what he did write, what he accomplished with his program, but just a good guy who, you know, feel a lot of different things than he has been. If you don't have him on your Mount Rushmore, you've a you're
something you've missed. Yeah, yeah, you're not You're Yeah, you don't have it all? Who are leaving off that Mount las Well, you're gonna have to make it like six or eight, the big one, you know, I mean you mentioned one today Mary Roby, Right, you know when when you think about the fact that Arizona has a female athletic director now, and I thought that was a great, great pull, you know, to ask Rocular Rose about Mary robe and going all the way back to there a
big deal. That was very cool, big dang big day. And we barely talked about Arizona be an by forty five on Saturday. Right. Well, it's funny because there was I just shot up my computer. I guess, Bobby, Bobby, uh, Bobby Herley was that was with Bickley and know them this morning, says thanks for thanks for having me. This is the first time I've come out of my public my hiding to be with you guys, because it was it was not that it was I didn't realize it.
That was the biggest beatout. I've seen a lot of beatdowns. There's been a lot. To me, I thought, forty five that's nothing. It was it was between forty five is a lot. Yeah, it's a lot to lose. Sixty yeah, yeah, And then they put in all their every starter. I loved those. You know what he would do, he'd point to the scoreboard out of here, the guy. It was just just checking the score man, Yeah, chick the score. All right,
Thanks everybody for being here. Tomorrow, we've got Michael lev lined up Calmness for the start to come in and talk to us about all this stuff that's been going on the last few days. We'll get another great guest as well, so be sure to come back tomorrow and we'll kick it around. So thanks for being here.
