This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova and Services. Hey sure your most prized possessions katz R two side at iHeart Radio Station. Good afternoon, and welcome Guy on the Ball. I'm your host, Jay Gonzalez, my buddy Steve, who's normally here. I had to take the day off. He's you had some business up in Phoenix to day. He will be back tomorrow. But I brought in a Do I call you a friend? I call you I don't

know what to call you because I've known you since you were born. Our family's very close friends. But it is Danny Martinez, who's the director of operations prayers on the softball, who's agreed to come in and just hang out with me for a couple of hours. So I don't know what you call it. Day. I think you can call me a friend. I think that. Yeah. I think are thirty hew old? Am I thirty three? Thirty three years of knowing each other? Yes, Dan, you are.

You are older than I was and I met you, so that's that's scary to me. But but Danny, the long time a PA announcer Fairs on a softball you'll hear his voice it at all the games. But now back is part of the softball program. And I know you were the sports information director, but you were in the communication off but now you are a part of the softball staff. Yep, I mean, how cool is that? Oh it's it's I mean dream come true type stuff. You know.

I love that program. I worked with it for ten years and just developed such a huge passion for that program. And to be able to go back as a member of that staff is it's. It's it's really really great cool. Yeah. Well, we're gonna talk a little bit about your job and what you do, and then uh, the program. They're they're in fall practice right now, so we'll talk about that a little bit later. But I wanted to I wanted to get into a lot of stuff we got going

on. First of all, we're gonna have Jack McGruder here from Sports Betting Dyeing dot Com. Jack and old friend uh old uh uh Pier at the at the Zend Daily Star. He he he works baseball games during the summer as an official score scorekeeper. He writes for Sportsbetting time dot Com. We'll pick his brain about some of the college stuff going on, and so he'll be here at three fifteen. Then at four fifteen, Bruce Pasco will be in from the Arizona Daily Star. We'll talk to him about while the Kona

Thread New showcase. Now it's not just the Ridds, that's right, the Red and Blue Showcase. Were you a part of that? Market is because you came out of marketing. Were you a part of that? That was one of the last things that I was working on or working with, one of the last things that we were we were putting together when when I left. So I was a part of it initially, but I don't where it's gone since I left. I'm not one sure, but yeah, all right,

cool. So we'll talk about, you know, just kind of some expectations that we had a we had a press conference with Tommy Lloyd earlier this week, talked about some stuff. But you know, what do we expect from the game. There's some a little bit of an I don't know if you'd call it an uproar, but there's some people who are unhappy that it's not on that it's not on television or streaming. We had Dave he could explained that, yes, today, but we'll just talk about the game coming

up. And I can't believe it's not it's still September and we're talking and there's actually gonna be guys on the Court's crazy basketball. That's crazy. Yeah, very nuts. So anyway, so that's what we got going today. But Jed Fish had a press conference today to get ready for the for the game on Saturday. Uh, he had talked about a bunch of stuff. There's the question of the quarterback. Uh, you know, who's gonna play

quarterback. We don't have an answer yet. We'll play some of that and then just overall, you know, the buzz of the game, you know, and I mean, is is there a buzz there? Has it been a buzz around McHale over this game or maybe the weekend because the Red Blue as well. Yes, there is, yeah, big buzz around mcale right now. This is a huge, huge weekend, you know on campus, just with everything between the Red Blue game, the football game, family weekend.

So there's definitely, uh, you know, you've felt it all week I mean even starting Monday. We're you know, now one day away from the Red Blue game. So yeah, there's definitely a palpable buzz around around mcale. Very cool. That's good to hear. All Right, well, we're gonna I'll just play Jed's introductory remarks at the press conference just kind of you know. He prefaced it as he always does, about we need to sell more tickets. He said, they're two hundred fifty tickets short of a

sellout, but it wants the crowd to be there. But then he got into a little bit of you know what we can expect to see. So here's what do you have to say at the start of the press conference. Excited about the opportunity we have to play these guys. I think it's a very good football team that we have coming in town. We have a very good football team. And you know, it's a four and oh squad versus a three and one squad, and this is one of the type of games

that everybody looks forward to in college football. Certainly our team does. Coach the Board has done a great job with his program. They've got some fantastic players. I expect all of them to play. It's gonna be a great

challenge and a great atmosphere. This is uh, this is gonna be Saturday night at its finest in the desert and looking forward to seeing how well we can play against what is a top five ball team, you know, getting back to that, you know, the it's been a long time since we've had one of these, Danny, Yeah, I mean, you know, we went we've gone through a rough time with the football. I mean, you know, you know for this you game last year, there was but

you know it was because it was the a SU game. You know, they weren't going to a bowl game or any of that. So but this is a game that has meaning to it and it's been it's the first one in a long time. Yeah. Just having that big game feel, I mean that's something we've we've we've had in McHale Center one hundred times in the last you know, a few years, but we haven't had one in football

for a long long time. So just to have that big game feel, you know, when the fans or when the team runs out of the out of the tunnel tomorrow, the stands will be packed and it's gonna just feel different than I think it's felt in a long time. So, yeah, you're right, ASU was a little bit different, But I think that doesn't really qualify because they're all all the games against but this one, I mean,

this has you know, Jed just said it. You know, four and overs three and one, this is Arizona's one to know in the past twelve. You know it might sound small, but that that's a positive step for us. So yeah, big game. And it hurts my heart to say they're three and one. But and I mean going into the Mississippi State game, you thought they had no chance, right or that they probably weren't

going to win right now. Yes, yeah, it got into like the third and fourth quarter and I was thinking to myself, oh, we should we should win this game. We are the better team in this game. And you know, just that on the road, sec environment, whatever it was that caused some missteps in the first quarter. You change maybe just one of those interceptions, and yes, we are four no going into this game.

But regardless, you know, the Pac twelve season starts now and we're undefeated in the Pac twelve and it would be great to be four and oh but but three and ones were good for this pretty good wit. You look, we weren't going to be in the playoff anyway, so you know, they're undefeated in the league. So obviously question number one, what's going on with the quarterbacks? Jane Delora got got hurt and in the start of the fourth quarter last week, nor Feeder came in game winning drive, did what

he needed to do. People are excited about nor Fa Feeding got people saying he should be the starter. You know, I think Jed's gonna you know, he's gonna go with with with uh uh Jade, you know if he can. But the question is can he? So he answers that question. Then the second part of this clip asking you know, some coaches require you to practice in order to play, and he was asked that, you know if Jayden, because he didn't mention Jayden did not practice yesterday. Does a

guy have to practice to have a chance to play. So here's the he's answered both of those questions. Dolora and Wiley will we'll work out on Saturday. We'll see how they look kind of very similar to the Joe Burrow plan, we'll call it, and we'll see what that looks like. And the most important thing that you can do as a football player is protect yourself. So if you're unable to protect yourself, then I would expect them not to

play. If they're able to protect themselves, then I would expect them to play. Yeah, I would say that is certainly something that we need to look at for each player independently and individually. You know, Jayden has started thirty two, pack twelve or thirty two football games already in his career. Mike has started I think probably in that same range. I would guess that's very different than a guy that started four games or two games or seven games

or whatever it might be. You look back historically when Jayden played Washington two years ago he was at Washington State, when he played him this past year he was, or last year he was here. He has experiences what they do. Mike has experiences in what they do. So we always are cautions of that. We don't really want to set a precedent that you know, how much do you practice will determine how much you play. He was certainly out at uh, you know, on yesterday's practice, So we'll have to

see what it looks like today to make some more decisions. So you know, uh, game time decision, right and all we shadowing all this is Mike Wiley's hurt too. Yeah, but you know, you think about they've got three guys who can still carry you know, I, for one, I love Jonah Coleman. Yeah, oh yeah, I can't wait for that guy to be the starter. Yeah yeah. He's very fun to watch and

and just does nothing but produce when when he gets in the game. But at the same time, going into a game against a team like Washington without both members of your of your starting backfield, I mean, that's that's a that's tough. You're you're already playing behind the eight ball. If if both you know, and I like, just like you like Jonah and everybody likes Jonah. I like Noah too. I think Noa fa Fita looked very, very good against Stanford, and I'd have all the confidence in the world in

him. But you know, Jane Delora and Michael Wiley are the starters for a reason, So you'd like to uh to have both of Well certainly you know both of those guys that you know walking on the field are gonna have probably many fewer butterflies. And say, yeah, no Fafita and Jonah Coleman. But but Jed's Jed's okay with no Fafita. He was asked at the towards the end of the press conference. Okay, if Ifida has to start, you know what, what are your thoughts on that? Here's what he

said. I mean, I have not shot away from my feelings towards Noah. I love Noah. I think Noah is and has been the ultimate professional, meaning every single day he shows up to work ready to be the next quarterback. He knows he's one play away. He's been told he's been one play away for as long as he's been here. His preparation has never changed, his film study has never changed, his note taking has never changed. And now the only difference is it's now time to go. If that opportunity

presents himself, and if it does, Noah will be ready. And if it doesn't, and no will be ready to play too and or beyond. But I believe that his He's played a lot of football and this is not his first time ever going out there. This won't be his first time that

he's ever had to lineup under center. But it certainly is a different challenge than when you go in at the end of the game against Utah, or you go in at the end of the game against Colorado when the score was kind of out of hand, or when you go in and last week's game kind of gives you a little bit different feel. You're down seventeen fourteen, You're on the road in a game that you know, we were the favorites, let's call it, and he managed that well. You know, I

don't think that they've had this go to a quarterback situation. I think I'll go back to like Nick Foles and Matt Scott. Right, I would agree with those full started games, but I think since then, yeah, when I they had two good quarterbacks, yeah, at the same time, Yeah, I would agree with that. That's I mean, you can argue that when they had Kalil take and Randon Dawkins, the wrong guy was playing. Yeah, but I you know, their quarterback situation wasn't as good as this.

No, and even even the years with a new I mean, no, they're Yeah, I would agree. I think this is the best since since falls and Matt Scott. But but like you said, I you know, I think, no, for you do do a good job, but to throw them in there to start against the number seven team in the country. Yeah, and and not only that, I first of all, I think that's their ranked way too long. Yeah, I do the best I think the best team in the league. Yeah, I agree. I picked

them to to you know, to win the league. And you know, if I ranked the teams in the league, now I did this. You know, Steve and I talked about this yesterday. Yeah, I've got Washington, then probably Oregon. Yeah, and then Utah and then USCO. They don't look that good to me. No good, They're really good. They're not a playoff team. I mean, well, I agree, and I

look at our upcoming schedule. You know, after after Washington it goes USC Washingt Shington State, Oregon State, UCLA and a team I think might be the best out of that group. I think Washington State, Washington State looks really really good, really good, and Arizone has got to go up there, and yes, which has never gone well, you know, going into the seasons. I had that as a sort of a fifty fifty game. It's not. Those guys are really they're really good, really really good.

But yeah, you know, but again, I think I think this week will be fun whatever happens. I'm not sitting here thinking if if, if, if Jane Delord doesn't start, they got no shot. Yeah, and that's a good feeling to have. Yeah, for sure it is, you know, and the same thing with Michael While Okay, throw Jonah Coleman there, Get Speedy Luke a couple more carries. Yeah, get DJ Williams a

couple more care totally agree. And I think the good thing about this, and I think Jed talks about this in a later clip, is you say that you think we have a shot no matter who's the starting quarterback. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that the defense has been good enough to keep us in every single game. And now, obviously this weekend's gonna be a total step up than anything we've seen so far. But the defense is playing. You know, you go back to Matt Scott

and and Nick Foles for the quarterback situations. I don't know when the last time we had a defense that that looks as good as this one does, so pre Rich Rods certain, Yeah, definitely. So you know, I think that's a good baseline to start with. Is uh, you know how good the defense has been. Yeah, all right, we're gonna take our

first break. We're gonna be back with Jack McGruder, who's gonna well, we'll get into some he's got he's been had some baseball duties, so we'll talk to him about what he's seen from the baseball season as we head to the playoffs. But then uh dak Ratcher Sports Betting time dot com. I'll get some of his thoughts and some of the some of the games coming up this week, and then we'll kick around sport jet pishtow. We've got some

more clips left that are pretty interesting, so stick around. We'll be right back. He'll be back tomorrow as we get ready for a weekend of clock football. But I've got oh pel Danny Martinez here, he's the directive operations for Arizona Softball. We're gonna

talk some softball in a little bit. But on the phone, we've got Jack mcgooner, another old friend, guy who's been around quote like one hundred, one hundred twenty years Jack, something like that. Yeah, it feels like it. But Jackson been is I been great enough to join us? They want to talk about a couple of things, and so I, uh, for those of you don't know, Jack is an official scorekeeper. It's a Major League Baseball parks most of the time, working in the summer at

in Colorado. You said you're doing the Diamondbacks games this weekend. Yeah, I've got the Saturday and Sunday games, which could be pretty monumental for both teams as far as against Houston, as far as those teams go for the playoffs. Right, So Houston's not in the playoffs yet, right? No, No, as as good as they are, it's a tight race in the Al West, especially so the work left to do for everybody. Any extra pressure on you, Jack, did you know, like be perfect with

the with the score book and stuff like that for games like this. No, it's just another game. It's just another guy. That's coach speak, man, that you're not Come on, you're not a coach. That's coach speak. You just you know, I can't let that extra that extra uh incentive play on us. You know, we just call him as we see

him. You can't put an extra strike on the you know in the book for an Astro's batterer, so that he thinks he's got one strike, but you know he's got too, and then you can't do any of that, right, It's really it's really a mundane job. So but you know, I mean, how to go this summer was there's still a lot of fun. The rockets weren't very good, but you're spending the summer in Denver rather than uh than the Phoenix areas got to be kind of nice. Yeah,

it really was a blast up there. You guys probably got the same weather Phoenix, the one hundred and fifteen, one hundred and seventeen all the time. Yeah, and I certainly didn't didn't miss that at all. But you know, it's still it's still doing work, and it's still trying to be trying to be good and make sure you make all the right calls. So, yeah, it is a lot of fun up there. My wife's from my wife from there, Joe, you probably do that, so that helps

a little bit to see get back in the home. Stopping drowns a little bit. So seeing all these games and you know, you go in doing what you do. You go to more games than you know most of us do tell me about, you know, things like the pitch clock and you know how many times you can throw it? First, I mean, did the game seem a whole lot faster? Do you it? Really? Did

it? Really? Which was? I thought it was great because I thought it just got too long in the last few years, with the batting glove adjustments and pitching up your pants and all that stuff between every advant I thought it was terrific. I think the players embraced a at least they got used to it for sure. By the end of the year. I don't know if we saw very many pitch clock violations at all. And I know the

bases, you know the bases. The change of the base has sped the game up a little bit because everybody's running and still a lot of action out. Very cool. So who do you who do you got? You think the Braves are pretty much unbeatable? What do you think? Gosh? I mean, they look like it, don't they. Yeah, Kuna is a Kunya is such a great player. Their their rotation has been off and on. But I think they that's they've got enough there to do it. That

lineup is very impressive. I don't know how you slow him down. Did you get to see him? Did he did he come to Uh? I did get to see him. I saw Kunya he did something. Oh I saw you know what? Did you see this on the on the highlights? Some fan in Denver ran out on the field. Kunia is out in right field and he set up to try to take a selfish Oh, yes, that was right, okay, all right, yeah, I remember seeing it.

Looks kind of serious. It looked like you might try to be doing it some damage, and so all the security guys ran out there, but all he wanted to do is take a picture of with him, And of course they got there first and he couldn't do it. But so much for that. Well all right, so no harm, no harm. Well, yeah, but that was scary, That really was. I saw that. That's that's that's gotta be scary for the play. Yeah, yeah, first

impression, definitely scary. Yeah. So okay, So we had a big, big weekend of college football last week or a bunch of great games. What's got your eye this weekend? Well, there's not quite as many good games, but uh, Duke and Notre Dame ought to be a pretty good game, I think. I also I also like the Texas A and m Arkansas game down and down in Dallas. I think that'll be an interesting game too. Oh they're playing that in Dallas. I didn't know that. Yeah,

they play They're playing at Jerry Jones Stadium. Yeah all right, But you know when you when you saw that there was all the deal about the Notre Dame o House State game last year when Notre Dame got beep out House State. Then they went off and lost to Michigan. I mean, Marshall the next week, I should we be taking Duke this week? I looked at him real hard because I'm my job at sports Betting Dame right now,

sports betting diame dot com if you guys want to look that up. My job is the pickoff sets every week, and it's been kind of hit or miss. You know, they're upsets for a reason, right right, And I really wanted to take Duke, but I just you know, they're they really haven't. Florida State was had a bad game. They missed two field goals, they outgained Duke in the first game, and the rest of the Duke's schedule has been pretty pretty basic. So yeah, I just I think

Notre Dame will be a little fired up after that stupid defensive deal. But they only had ten guys on the field. Can you imagine that? What the hell? No, that's that was for two plays? Right? Yeah, two plays? They they don't they don't have enough guys on the field. That was crazy. It was crazy or great the first time, well, the first time they didn't even see it right and they threw a path and the second time to the big hole in the in the line. You

know, what is it? It's kind of up in the air everything right now, right, I mean, George is not as good as George has been. Alabama obviously not. I think why Washington is better than USC. It's kind of a jumble right now. How long do you think before this

thing flushes out? It usually takes a couple more weeks, right, sometimes so that the will Georgia's usually dominant or Alabama's usually dominant at this time, and this year there's always you know, there's always guys that are should be better or you think would make a run and get up at the top. I'm really impressed by the PAC twelve this year. I know, I know this is the last time we'll ever see him as they exist right now. But they got a good bunch of teams. I'm with you on Washington better

than USC. I really like Michael Pennocks a lot. I know Arizona is going to have their hands full this week. They'll probably give them a game. Man, I washing them is hard to slow down. They're really, really good. I really likes a lot. Two teams in the big team, you know, Penn State and yeah, thissually going are probably better than Ohio State right now. I guess we'll see how it plays out. They'll end up playing each other as we go. What about the Ryan Day stuff.

That stuff is still going on between between him and Lou Hols. I mean, Danny, you I know you you've you've heard all that. I mean, you just leave the old guy alone. What you do? I think that was that was a little ridiculous, and he's still yelling at him, like what the hell? And then the Lou holds the fighting back. I mean, what do we do with that? Jack? You know, I think these old guys, I mean this guy's and Corso too, they're

just trying to get ratings for me. Sure, they're trying to they're trying to throw lines out there, right, They're not trying to give you a intense analysis a game. They're just trying to throw lines out there. You just kind of kind of let that go, don't say you just gotta let it, let it fly and say, wow, that's just some dope on

the internet saying something, So I'll just I'll just ignore it. Well, well, we were talking this week about the fact that there's more and more coaches are doing that, right, you know sand you know, the REA acting to the stuff that they've always said that they don't listen to. Well, we've always known they listened, but they haven't always reacted. I mean, you're I mean out there. Yeah, I mean you covered, you covered Dick Tomy. I mean he didn't you know, he didn't react to

this stuff. And you know other coaches that you've dealt with over time. But now all of a sudden, it's all okay and everybody does you know you had the Washington State coach going off last week. You know, we've seen the stuff that Dan Sanders and Dan Lanning and all this stuff going on. I like the Washington State coach coming up with that, because he was right on that, and they get no respect. They just get no respect. And sometimes you gotta fight that. Sometimes I got to say, hey,

we're here, we deserve some respect. Uh, be quiet? All right. So when I'm looking back on your website, so you haven't done your upset picks yet? When will that come out? Comes out tomorrow? No, I'm sorry, it comes out Saturday morning. I got off tomorrow and come back Saturday morning, Jack, I gotta make my picks tomorrow night on the show. I mean, what the hell? Yeah? Well, okay, all right, give you no. I don't know how much health do you need from me? Well, I'll tell you what I'm I'm I'm

six out of fifteen, okay, No, six out of twenty. That's about average. Six No, no, no, I'm six out of no, six out of twenty. I'm six out of twenty. That's really bad. All right. Give me give me a give me a game that I'm gonna that I'm gonna put in my picks tomorrow. Okay. It doesn't have to be enough set, it doesn't have to be enough to be any game.

They're getting six and a half or seven. Danny close your ears and uh, I think therefore, well, can we talk about this or say Danny just can't participate in the in the conversation, but you can talk to me. Arkansas Jay is four oh and one and against the spread the last five against Dann M. They've out gained them in the last four games, so they'll they'll almost cover. Now, maybe they won't win, but I think they're just as good as ay and M. And am always this a

point, don't they? Yeah, they do. Don't you don't You always think they're supposed to be better than this, and they're not. Their quarterback, they're starting quarterback was hurt last week, but I don't think it really matters if he's if he's back or not. They win with defense, they don't win with offense. Right all right, Jack, I'm taking They're one.

They're one for and one against the spread. Just throwing something else, and they're one for and one against the spread as a neutral site favorite where they are again, and they play Alabama and Tennessee in the next two weeks, so they're probably just peeking ahead to those two games. All right,

I'm taking I'm taking Arkansas tomorrow listening to this and I'm taking Arkansas. Okay, you can probably jump in again on this Jimble Fisher how much I mean, he's got like one hundred million dollars buy up, but he could be in trouble, can't. Don't you think it just I don't know. He just hasn't produced there right to the levels that they expected. I know they've had a decent team, but they were five, haven't had much offense.

They were hired, uh I'm sorry, go ahead, and they get you know, the number one recruiting classes and they're all these you know, the transfer portal. They're hitting it hard, and then there's just no results on the field. There's you know, they have everything going for them, but he just can't win football games. It's so weird. Yeah, they hired motorcycle Bobby Trina to be their Trino to be their offensive coordinator this year,

and they still haven't done much offensively. They lost to Miami. You know, Miami's a good team, but not great. They lost to Miami and they just hung on to beat Auburn. So I yeah, there's just the results to start their No, they haven't been absolutely how much do you do? Do you do? Much of U NFL stuff, not too much, no, no, just this as a watcher because Danny Lions are playing tonight right now, yep, yep ye game. Yeah, I wonder if I

wonder if the Montgomery is going to be uh inactive or active. I have heard the signs are pointing to that he is playing tonight, so that you know, we need all the help we can get against the Packers, but that that would be nice. I told I was really upset with him because I had I had the Chiefs when the Lions beat him in the opener, and then I had the Lions the next week when they lost to the Seahawks. I'm like, I'm really, I'm kind of upset with Danny and the

Lion right now. So I don't know what to do. I like their coach. He's kind of an old school, yeah, hard nose kind of guy. I like him a lot. I think they I think they've got a good team. You know, I'm on Saint Brown is Terrificcomery can gains the yards. Yeah, I liked him a lot. Yeah, first time in a while that I've been, you know, actually positive about the Lions, And I just hope they don't rip my heart out. Yeah, well then you can live on that first game for a couple of weeks. A

nice win for them, that was. Plus you've been in Arizona fan all your line you're used to get, yes, Arizona Lions Tigers. Yeah. Hey Jack, Hey, thanks a bunch man. I appreciate you joining us today and I'm taking the Razorbacks tomorrow. Okay, so that one's on you. Thanks Jake, thanks for having talking to you. Danny Martinez from the years on the Softball program. Steve is out today, he'll be back tomorrow. We'll be back and we got you got a really good show shaping up. We've got Yogi Roth from Peck Club Networks. Client. You probably running into Yogi year time or two. Yogi's the best. I mean, he is truly one of the best people in that you know, in that industry, among all color announcers and just personalities. I think

he does his research better than anybody else. He's incredibly you know, personable, and in every interaction I've ever had with him, I truly think he is the best. He's never said no to Lay. He's so he never said no, and I want he's calling the game Saturday against Washington. So I said, hey, can you do the show on Friday? He said absolutely, So he'll be here at three fifteen tomorrow, at three thirty five, we're gonna have Kevin Singleton, one of the one of the honorary captains.

He and his brother Chris both played at Arizona UH back in the early Dick Tomy years. So Kevin will be on with us, and then our usual Friday UH analyst Jake Fisher will join us. Danny knows Jake Jake as well from the old high school day. Yep, that's right, yeah, Jake Jake. Was that good to see that he's still you know, he's he's on your show. I didn't know he was on your show. That's

he's one of our sponsors. Okay, so we got Jesper, you know, we pick his brain, right, he played the game, So we go into a game, and I'm always like, Okay, this week it's this. What was it like when you did that? Oh? That's great. Yeah, we'll we'll pick his brain on that. So so we're gonna have a loaded show tomorrow. But I wanted to get to some more jet Fish stuff. I asked him, you know, what does what you know Washington is? It's people have said scary good? What are they best at?

Offensively? Uh? And he just you know his his his answer won't surprise you, but he'll he'll stand up for himself as well. Here's what had to say about the Washington offense. Well, I mean, I think there's no question that they throw the ball beautifully. They have an outstanding passing attack. They have great wide receivers, they have an outstanding offensive line. Their quarterback is elite. That's not to say that they don't have great running

backs and tight ends. But they have a great scheme. I think coach the Bord is one of the better U if not one of the best offensive coaches in all of the country. And coach grubbing him together is a great combination. And they put their guys in position to make plays. They make plays. They're at outstanding. They're outstanding on offense, and but I don't we don't shy away from anybody on offense. We think we're one of the

best offenses in the country. And you know we're right now sitting at thirtieth in the country. A lot of times would happen. You know, we're three points below where we were last year. We had one hundred and seventeen points within four weeks last year. We have one hundred and fourteen points this year. But very different type of games we've played. We haven't had to outscore people. Uh So we uh we certainly feel like our offense can match

up with anybody. But these guys are elite when it comes to how they pass the ball, how they get their guys open, how they compete for the ball in the air. And our defense is going to have a great challenge one on one. You know, it's it's funny. They're three and one, three and one. Yeah, they had a tough game against Stanford last week, and that was a game I've said, that's a game that

Arizona normally lose. But all those things go wrong. For sure, your quarterbacks are playing well, you got a bunch of injuries you're on the road against a team that you feel you should be able to handle, and they and they jump up and bite you. And it's a game that Arizona over

the years has lost, but they won. You know, the offense has been scoring the points that we were expecting, but they're still three and one, right, I mean, what do you what do you think when you think about, Yeah, it's it's been kind of a weird season all together when it comes to the offense, because what I see is an improved offensive line. I think the offensive line looks really really good. Jordan Morgan, I mean he could be he could be a first or second round pick.

I think he's that good. Jana Sevanaiah is you know, an elite tackle in his own right. I think the offensive line is much improved. The weapons are still there. The weapons are still there. T Mac looks even somehow more physical and more explosive than he looked last year. Jacob Cowing is still there. The running back, you know, stable is there. So all the pieces are there. It just seems like something it hasn't connected yet.

It's there's there's something that you know, and and I have all the confidence in the world that it's going to it's they're going to figure it out, you know, maybe this way if they didn't. Yeah, so at some point it's gonna come together because the pieces are there. I think the foundation with that offensive line, that's that's what can take this offense to the

next level. Well, you feel like they at least have an offensive line that might be able to you know, protect a quarterback, even against somebody like Washington. Yeah. Right, I'm not even sure how good Washington's defense is because they've not played anybody great. They scored a bunch of points, there's still a lot we don't know about Washington, although all signs pointed them being yeah, really damn good. But you don't feel like you're walking in

and thinking Arizona's got no shot in the trenches either. Offensive your defense, that's the big thing is Especially when I was watching us play Mississippi State, where you know you're going against an SEC opponent, I thought we looked just as you know, every every bit as as physical in the trenches as Mississippi State. So yeah, I think that, Yeah, you're right, I

don't think we'll be outmanned there. Well. Jason Shearer asked the question that I wanted to ask, So it was, Okay, do you go into a game like this thinking, okay, if we hold him to X number of points or we've got to score X number of points to win the game. Do you do you look at it that way? Here's what Jed had to say. Yeah, you know I would say this, not really, we don't. I think if you look at games, and you know that

I've study the NFL a lot. I mean you look at the Patriots versus the Dolphins and it was twenty four seventeen, and then the next week you look at the Broncos versus the Dolphins and it was seventy to twenty. You just don't necessarily know how a game is going to go. You have a certain plan on defense to try to contain an offense as as explosive as the Miami Dolphins or the Washington Huskies. The way that we'll go, we'll determine

how we'll have to play the game. And we had three possessions on all offense last weekend we scored twice. If they have three possessions on offense, they can only score three times and they could score twice two. So you have to look at all facets of it when you continue to try to figure out how to play a game. The other part of it that I think is really important is that when you go through these processes of trying to determine how the game's gonna go, you have to look at all three phases.

You have to look at your team's hell, their team's hell, your team's scheme, their team's scheme. And this is not a game that last year was forty two thirty nine with seven minutes left in the game, and you know, both teams were playing at a very high level. It could be that or it could be different, but we're just unsure right now. They've had a lot of possessions. We haven't had the same amount of possessions. So we need to take the ball away to make sure we can get some

extra points. I mean, and really that's it. I mean, I said, simple thinker, and I'm not a coach, right, I said, affair hold him under thirty. They've got a really good chance. And I think that that's the case. Yeah, whether that's their goal, if they've set that number as a goal, I don't know. But you hold Washington into four touchdowns, you'd like to think you win the game. Yeah, question is will they right? Yeah, And I agree with Jed to

the to his point. You know, I think if you look at last week, I don't think anybody would have thought that the score would be twenty one, twenty or whatever it was. You know, at the end of the day, the goal is to have more points than the other team, right, It doesn't matter if that's three zero, It doesn't matter if that's seventy to you know, sixty, whatever it is. You know that that I think a lot of times, you know, I just kind of look

in the mirror with myself. I was upset that we didn't look a little bit better against Stanford. I was I was upset that we didn't, you know, win by double digits. Same thing with my line, you know, I was upset that, you know, we only scored twenty points against the Falcons, but at the end of the day, we won. Both of those are two wins and and and that is the goal, you know, of a game plan, of of you know, coaching, in game, everything like that, it's to win the game. So so yeah,

I agree with you. I mean again, you know, when I put my head on the pillow Saturday night after the game, I was like you yeah, I'm like, yeah, come on, yeah, I mean, these guys were a really bad team. Wait a minute, they won. Yeah, don't be upset. And I took my own dang words because earlier in the week I said, what if they win, no matter what the score is, you have to be happy with it because it's a road game.

Exactly if they if they win seventeen to thirteen or yeah, you know, you know, twenty eight, twenty four happening right because they won a game. Yeah on the road. Yeah. Conference wins. Conference road wins are like gold. I mean, you know, I obviously I think everybody watching it wanted to look a little bit better, a little bit cleaner. But at the end of the day, a win is a win, especially on the road. Well, and this is a test for Washington right there

there. I mean, whether it's pressure or not, or they're just having fun with the fact that they're considered, you know, a possible playoff team, this is a this is the first real test for them, and if they come and screw this up this weekend, their whole season can go right in the crapper. If they don't come in and hold court against Arizona, and as you said, it's tough on the road. They've got a history

of not playing well on the road and in Arizona. You know, Arizona's beating them sometimes here that you just didn't spent the whole first half of the week talking about the ninety two game where you were just a child, and you probably don't even remember that. I don't remember. But you know, you know they've come here with some really good teams and gotten beat Yeah, you know, I mean that that game where J. J. Taylor got hurt. You early, Arizone was gonna win that game. Yep, that's

right, right, and it looked like that's right. Yeah, did that game go to over time? I think we took them to overtake it. I think that. So, I mean the ASU game last year, I mean that completely changed their trajectory last year as well. So yeah, exactly, all right, Well, we ran out of time again. Danny had chance to talks to the softball But we are. We're gonna get to that. We're gonna take our last break of the hour of this hour. We're

gonna come back. We've got breaking newser there is some stuff out there. We'll have a chat. We've got uh uh Bruce Pascal coming in at four fifteen to talk about the Red Blue game. We'll go, we'll go through that and then we'll we'll get to Danny stuff because yea, I invited the years we could talk about what's going on around Arizona softball. I promise we'll get to it. But breaking news coming back at the top of the hour. We'll right back
