This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteenth fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services and Sure Your Most Prized Possessions Katz R. Tupsa at iHeartRadio Statia. Good Thursday afternoon here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Welcome to I on the Ball. I'm Jay Gonzalez, your host for the next couple of days because Steve is having a birthday and he's taking the next couple of days off. He's on his way to Vegas as we speak.

So today Steve is too old to be going to Vegas for his birthday. I hope he's listening to that. I mean, I'm too old to be going to Vegas for my birthday. Well he is, and he's going for the whole weekend too, so hopefully we get him back on Monday, but he'll he won't be here today. But I've got my guest host. You just heard Adam Gonzalez, known around town as his mother's son, who

happens to be my wife, so he's also my kid too. Adam is a former sports information at Arizona. Covered Jed Fish's first year working for Jed on doing media for football, also did a DA Barnes and women's basketball including

the Final four Final four year. Some other sports, uh worked with our with our guests today, Jim Anderson from there Arizona men's golf team, Well he was well, he was uh working there, So a lot of familiarity with the Arizona sports now working in the College of Science at at the University of Arizona. On the board today, we've got Ryan in his debut working the board intern. Ryan's going to be here for us this summer, so, uh, this is his first day on the board, so we're gonna

hope it goes well. Ryan, You ready for this? All right, let's do it. You know, lots of stuff to talk about, a lot of great topics to go on. A couple that had planned, but one that I didn't plan that we will talk about now. With Frank Bogel fired from the Phoenix Suns, just like that, he's gone after a year. Yeah. In the NBA, especially, the coach is the easy escapegoat. It's easy to get rid of a coach, right, So it doesn't really surprise me, it doesn't surprise you. What do you think, Well,

everybody's saying he was the wrong guy for this. He's not the fit. Yeah, he's like a defensive guy. The Sons didn't put together a team with good defense on its mind, right right, you know it did just seem yeah, I mean it kind of seemed awkward all year long. I have a lot of thoughts on the Suns. Uh, well, let's hear the good ones. I mean it's not great right now. What I like when they made that big trade to get Kevin Durant, they gave him

a lot. Obviously, I thought it was a good move considering, you know, what they had going on at the time. But then when they took and this has nothing to do with him as a player, when they traded all their picks for Bradley Beal. Bradley Beal great player. If he's your third best player, that's a good thing. Couldn't have been a worse fit for this that specific roster, right, So it doesn't work. And they had no facilitat and no point guard on the right, they didn't have

a guard at all. I mean they had guards, but not a point guard. Every now and then, Devin Booker in the previous years, he'd go point book he'd be a point guard for every now and then it work. It'd be cool. To have Devin Booker be your point guard for the entire season is like malpractice. Yeah, he's not. That's not what he

does, and to ask him to do that, it's crazy. So the way I mean, Devin Booker and KD and Bradley Beal all do the same thing exactly exactly, and to not have somebody any like you know who didn't perfect for them is TJ McConnell. It doesn't even have to be an all star point guard, Mike Conley, just somebody like that who can calm things down for a second. Their and their offense just was stagnant every now and then, just because he didn't have anything to run going back even front of

the do you do you think they should have fired Moni Williams? I mean, if they were going to do all this other stuff. In hindsight, yes, because Monnie Williams is an absolute trash back. Okay, so in hindsight yes, okay, it thinks he I mean, MANI you know, they got him to the finals and after that, after after after going up too oh in the finals, just big time right right? But but kay, let me ask you that would he been a better coach for this maybe

maybe, but still not the guy. All right? So who's the guy? Now? That's that becomes a big question. There's you know, are they going to recycle a guy or are they going to go get somebody you know who's you know, an up and coming kind of guy. I mean, you know, they're already talking about Mike Butenholzer. I don't know Mike,

Butenholder they said he's going to like lead the search. I guess he worked for the Suns, right, But I mean it'd be kind of hard to get an up and up and comer to say, hey, come fix this. Here's Kat Booker and Bradley Beal. Here you go. That's hard. Who among the coaches that a would be candidates or b that or maybe have other jobs, you know, and one of the other one of the other teams that would move up It would be considered to move up to the

Sons. Do they could handle this roster with KD, with Devin Booker, with Bradley Beal and with the Clippers there you might you'll probably get fired. Things are haven't gone well for the Clippers. But don't the Lakers want him? Sure? Just I don't know. But I again, but you know, when you're talking about a franchise like the Sons that has that has guys like me, like these three guys Booker and and and and and Katy and stuff, and you can't get a coach that can not just I don't think

it was just. I don't think it was Frank. I won't say that. So it's not like they can't get like Frank is a good coach. You want a title, right, he's a good coach. He did well, the facers didn't fit for yeah, but you know, so, but who do you get that can come and handle all of that? What ty you mentioned? Tylo? You know, I don't know if you're not gonna

you're not gonna pull right. The thing with the NBA, it's it's there's a lot of guys out there who they could hire just some random assistant coach. And well, I mean the Lakers hired Darvin Ham, he was the Bucks assistant coach. No one really had that right right now. He obviously just got fires that didn't go well. Yeah yeah, Steve Kerr, no way, he's still you think he's still good at uh? Yeah, you think so? I mean things are kind of unraveling a little, I know,

but I don't think. Yeah, I mean, it's it's really I mean, it was shocking. This is just this has happened so recently. There aren't even names being thrown out yet on social media anything. At least there weren't last night. Act Steve and those guys are they're tight. I don't think. Yeah, all right, the Warriors are going to go through some changes, right, I don't think is going to be one of them.

Yeah, I mean he would he would leave only if he was I mean, he would be gone only if he left, not if they're not going to ask him to leave or anything like that. Probably not. Yeah, all right, anyways, well that's you know, again, some something more to talk about here. During the summer, we got a lot of stuff, uh to talk about. But that's uh, you know, that's happening. It's happening right now. But I mean vocal just okay, what

woes? Just tweeted Budenholzers emerging as the front er to be the Suns next already there you go, there you go? And woes is he he kind of knows what somebody told him that exactly exactly. But have you have you liked what the new owner has been has been doing and just his kind of Okay, so that's approaching. Is that one of your things that yeah?

Like at first, yes, like things weren't going well. The Suns went up to oh in the finals, and then they lost four stre and then they got dog walked against the Sun against the Mavericks, and then they started the next season really poorly. Things were going bad, like the window was quickly closing. New owner comes in, makes a splash, got rid of some guy, Michale Bridges, really good player, like elite role player, especially for a winning team, got rid of him, Katie. I thought

it was a good move. A lot of people didn't like what he did next by putting together like an NBA two K team, Like, okay, here's a bunch of good players we have, you know, Booker, Beale, Durant, what can go wrong? Well, that's not really how it works. So he made what I think was a good move to keep the window opening, go for a title, and follow that up just dug a

hole. Took two steps forward and took three steps back just because oh, I can get Brad Beale and I don't have to give up need like players of like that they would like to keep. All I gotta do is get rid of these picks. Great, sure, yeah, prob missed to Brad Bule costs like fifty sixty million dollars, So they can't sign anybody anybody else, right, that's the issue. Brad bill is a great player, horrible

fit. Well, they it seems they from that to nothing, you know, lead that they've just been going in the wrong direction and continue to go in the wrong. DeAndre Ayton saga. Yeah, Like the thing was DeAndre Ayton. He obviously has his own issues, but him and Monty didn't. Yeah, Monty left and they're all gone right all right? Man? Well, well, I'm sure we'll talk about this some more. We'll get some of the Phoenix guys when we get a chance. But again, this happened

just a little over an hour ago. And uh, you know, uh, you know, Frank Bogel out as the Son's coach. The quote the I guess the money quote from from the Son's front office. We're here to win a championship and last season was way below our expectations. We will continue to evaluate our operation and make the necessary changes to reach our championship caliber caliber

goals. So you know, I mean they feel the windows still open, but yeah, is it, Yes, it is, but things have to change drastically though, right, Yeah, They've got good players and like the Timberwolves really good. Yeah, the Nuggets are good. Yeah, the thunder are really good. Right, Right, it's not just about what you're doing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Well you know that the Western Division is

good. They a bunch of good teams back there, and you know, the Timberwolves, I mean they're the next you know, Denver Nuggets coming up right that that are just worth different good they're a little different, but in terms of yah, they're a team that's going to be here for a little while, you know, with the guys that they have, any have you

watched them much? Yes, well I watched I watched them a bunch recently because you've started as you know, we talked about this a couple of days ago that he's like and the way I put it, he's the next next Michael Jordan. Right, He's the next guy that they're talking about who's kind of he just like he looks just he looks like he's got he's got that fade away jumper. Then and and those kinds of things that that Yes, and you know, even even Reggie Miller who said he hates when people compare,

you know, he said, why can't guys just be guys? You know, we always have to have the next Lebron and the next Michael Jordan and the next Kobe Bryant. He said, But but this one it fits the mold better than most of the other ones have, right, And and that caught my eye. So I've been paying attention to to to see and you're you're right. I mean, he just he's shocking, Yes, and he's taking like they talk about in the NBA, taking the step. You

can see him right now taking the step. Yeah, so we'll see. But and if he's that guy, one, how long does he stay in Minnesota? See that sucks. But two, if he let's say he does, how long is Minnesota? I'm saying that sucks that you asked that question. Hey, you know I'm not I'm not the one that keeps bringing up the small market thing that happened last night with the with with the game last

I have I have nothing but bad nothing. But well we'll get to that in a minute, because there's again a lot of stuff going on around the NBA to talk about. You got playoffs, you got we've got t J McConnell, and people talking about him. Why is that guy like I said nothing but bad things to say about Rick, Carla, Yeah, exactly. So anyways, all right, so we are going to have we're gonna be talking some Arizona men's golf here in a couple of minutes. Jim Anderson is

going to join us. Head had golf coach guests to the show a bunch of times, love having him on. I've got my trustee co host filling in for Steve Rivera, Adam Gonzales. On the other mic Ryan as you running the board with us and on the phone out. Jim Anderson had had men's golf coach at the University of Arizona getting ready for the regionals up in UH West Lafayette and Purdue on Monday. Jim, Welcome to the show. Hey,

Jay, Adam, how are you guys this afternoon. Thanks for having me on. We're good. It's golf weather out there for US gym's. We're actually even playing a little bit, so it's kind of nice. But you guys, uh have been out there for a while. Things are you know, you're you're you're now you know it's playoff time? I got do you guys call them playoffs? I don't know if you know it's a it's postseason.

But you know, for golf, it's different, right, It's not like a game it's you got you got the postseason, but you guys, uh, your head, your head out to West Lafayette. First of all, just tell us a little bit about how you're doing going in. I saw that you know, it didn't go so well in the Pac twelft tournament. But you know you are, you are where you are, So how where are you right now? Yeah? No, we could be more excited

for the opportunity to compete at Purdue. And they have a great course, therapy die course, the Candy course, and from all the research we've done, it sets up like a championship set up. And we've got you know, we've got a great team. We've we've enjoyed a lot of success this this year and and semester specifically, which is which has created a nice buzz, maybe a bit of expectation and all the good things that come with being

a great team. But we also know that that you know, we the number we caret going in, with the two seed, the ranking that we have eleventh in the country, all that stuff gets thrown out starting this time of year, and and that's true of even you know, the last tournament we played. Of course, we wish we could have done a few things a little bit better at Pac Twelves, and we learned from it, We've practiced on it, and I think that experience is going to help us be

better prepared for what we need to be ready for. Here come Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Purdue, Hey, coach, good to talk to you. My first question is, with golf being such an individual sport, what makes a great team. I think there's a lot of things that that, uh, you know, great teams have that even our team, that our team has and it's it's not even it's not even because we coach it or

try to have it. Our our our guys are very very proud of the fact they get to represent our university, our community, our golf community, Arizona Golf. You know, there's there's a ton of great players who've played here. Teams have had success. So you know, our chemistry, it's built around guys who love the game of golf, who are competitive, who

are hard working, and they share similar interests. That way, so all of a sudden, we spend you know, hours and hours of the day together and friendships are forged and relationships continue to manifest and next thing you know, you've got a bunch of guys who like being around each other and like to compete, and you know, I don't know if we if we want

to say we coach a chip on their shoulder, but we're competitive. You know, we want we want our team to to have, you know, the attention that that great teams have, and so those are things that motivate

us. Those are things that we try to do. And you know, those are probably not much different than that of you know, our football team that we've enjoyed watching our basketball teams and so many of the other sports here at the u of A. And the coaches, the coach you know, they're trying to put the right people around one another to share in a goal

and work hard and try to accomplish some some really cool things together. Well, well, we've seen what Clancy Shields has been able to able to do over there with men's tennis, which sort of a similar kind of thing, right, you got an individual sport, but you put a team together and you see the way those guys are during a you know, during a match that they're you know, they're cheering, and they're up and down, and there's a lot of a lot of excitement and noise and know you're not going

to do that on the golf course, but still you got your guys who you need to have them backing each other and and and and pulling each other along, right, I mean, that's that's how works. How do you do that? You know, in the course of a golf tournament like this where guys wann't have to be focused on how they're playing, but too they

care about the team. Yeah, I think you know you're not going to see it, just like you nailed it there Jay with you don't necessarily see it or hear it the same way because you don't have your teammates watching you on court three. You know, after you've wrapped up on court two, and you know that that's going to happen. But you know, in a t sheet, you know our five man, he's our first, four man,

three man, two man, and one in the back. So as we finish, we get to support here and get excited about results that are coming in the other thing, too, is despite the fact that it's an individual game. You know, college golf is a team sport and and only six players ultimately get to play at the NCAA Championship as an individual. There's

one hundred and fifty that are part of a team. So when you think about it in that level, it's really important that you are tuned in and with with your team and you are making decisions that are going to be you know, good ones for your team. And you know, the things that we try to coach into our team every year, and our team this year has done a great job is composure, patience, you know, just maintaining a clear mind through competition. Because you know, you guys play golf.

I played golf. It can be a frustrating game. You can you know, you can see the hero shot and sometimes we try the hero shot and it works. But I think, you know, just being calculated and making really composed decisions, especially this time of year, is is a sign of really really good teams. Okay, so you're going into this uh this regional in uh in uh. I'm sorry about that. In my computer kick, you're going to this region and Purdue tell us a little bit about the field.

You know, you guys are the number two seed there. You obviously have an expectator. You know, if you're the number two seed, you're somebody that ought to or can have has you know, a real good shot to win this thing. So what what do you expect to see and what do you hope to see? Well, one of the good things about coaching

golf is I don't have to necessarily scout the opponent very often. You know, for us, it's not so much about who who gets a sign to the regional as much as it is is making sure that six wildcats are ready to take on the challenges whatever course we're playing present. So we've done a lot of homework on the golf course. As I mentioned, is that Pete died is on which is which is great. He's he's the kind of architect who I don't think we have any PDE in Tucson. I could be missing

one. I'm pretty sure we don't. But you know he did TPC sawgraphs for example, and and so many other great courses that really challenge great players. He was the architect. He was kind of renowned to to to not care if a player can't shoot under par on his course. You know. So our guys are composed and we're you know, talking about distances we want

to try to fly it off the tee. We're talking about you know, targets from those distances, and you know, in the practice round Sunday, we're going to do our best to make sure we have yardages dialed in because the ball is gonna fly a little bit differently, uh less elevation, probably a little cooler temperatures, different grasps play played from and you know, getting getting used to the green speeds and shipping on some firm greens and some really

really good Midwest golf. So you know, that's that's our focus. And you know, if we take care of the business internally a lot of times that yields the results we're looking for externally. Is your is your roster made up of guys who have similar games? Or do they all have is everybody

you know very different? Or how do you how do you assemble a roster like that in terms of you knowing the courses that that you play in the PAC twelve and well soon to be the Big twelve, but you know the PAC twelve and stuff, and where are you're going to be, how you know, how do you shape your team in terms of the type of player that you're looking for and how you know what are the similarities and differences between the different guys on your team? Good question. And you know, first

first it goes back to the recruiting process. And the first thing I might say is recruiting can be hard. So you know, obviously everybody wants to have Rory McElroy on their team. And if you could put the games of five Rory McElroy's or Scottie Scheffler's or whomever you're talking about that we watch on Sundays playing golf on TV, you know, that's what we would what we

would recruit. But you know the fact is different players make it make their way onto our radar, different relationships are forged, and we have guys with

different types of games. And a really cool question you asked there, Jay, because I don't I don't know if this is a strength or maybe lucky or maybe it's not it's a weakness of us, But honestly, we have, like on our lineup, we have, you know, there's a nice mix of guys who play with control and precision and you know kind of kind of take care of you know, I guess they're the game within themselves really well, you know, like you would just expect them to be in twelve

or thirteen fairways, you would expect them to be on or around the green, you know, fourteen fifteen times, and they're gonna chip it up real tidy and wedget real close even though they can't reach part five. But we also have two or three guys who absolutely bomb the ball and can kind of

overpower our golf course. So if we were assigned to a golf course where we needed bombers, that would probably be a disadvantage because you know, the two or three guys that are traveling that are a little more within themselves, they they would probably you know, maybe struggle compared to the field of bombers. But I think we're equipped and set up that, you know, either type of course that we're presented with, we we've got strengths in both areas

and and uh players who are capable on the other side. Kind of a similar question to you know, playing different kind of golf golf courses. Does playing desert golf all the time here in Tucson does that help when you go to a place like Indiana for instance. Sure? Yeah, I mean the one great thing about Tucson, I mean, there's there's so many great things, but and we we are very fortunate to access so many of the courses

here in town. In fact, you know, I don't want to overstep, but there's not a course in town that says, nope, can't come out here. So so we can provide a ton of variety. There's there's there's certainly desert courses. There's hilly courses, there's flat courses. We have parkland style courses. So we're able to present different looks for our guys, you know, weekly, So that that's a that's definitely a strength for us.

Desert golf can can be intimidating, and I think, you know, for for prepping for a regional that's good because there's gonna be some hay at the et Purdue and and there's going to be you know, some tight looking fairways because they're growing up the rough, and you know, it's just a championship setup. So you know, if you can kind of put yourself on that difficult keyball the Gallery or Star Pass or so Wilo or any of the great the desert courses. I shouldn't be using them all by name, but

so many great desert courses. If you can put yourself on a t shot that was challenging for you, they remind yourself, oh, I've hit this shot before when you're at Purdue. Sure there's there's definitely a benefit of doing that, but you know a lot of times like those experiences are are forgotten when you're in the moment of competition and you just have to rely on the player that that got you there, and and and the confidence you've built with

all the reps you've logged, and you know know that you're you've earned the right to be there and just be confident, be yourself and play free. So in terms of your your approach with your guys, I'm looking at your roster only a couple of seniors on the team, you know, unless one of these guys goes off and wins the PGA Tour tournament, like the kid from I think was it from Alabama that did that earlier this year somebody something,

somebody played as an amateur and won a tournament. I can't remember. Oh yeah, you're speaking about Nick dunlast year on the AMEX. Uh. So you expect to see have most of these guys back. So is this sort of a you know, you're I mean, you've you've got a chance to win this thing, but you're also looking at you know, we might

be even better next year. Well sure, you know, when you when you start looking ahead, it's certainly uh, I don't want to say necessarily exciting, but we're encouraged by the roster that we're going to get the return Sam Summerhouser being our only senior and he graduated today, so I want to shout out Sam. He's been a rock team for four years. But yeah,

we absolutely are excited about the roster we have returning. But you know, I think in the moment now, i'm you know, I think we're trying to we're trying to seize the opportunities in front of us, and we're not really really trying to trying to be too focused on what might happen in the future. So you know, this this a lot of the guys who

are traveling to Regional this year. We're a part of a regional team that was pretty good last year too, and we're going to rely on that experience and continue improving and you know, just do our best to play our best golf this time of year. And if that happens, I think I think we'll be uniquely positioned to have, you know, the opportunity to come back on the show and talk about some great things that are going on with Arizona golf. You know what. I always love to do that. Well,

Jim, I appreciate the time. Get you guys ready and looking forward to seeing how you guys do. Starting Monday. It's a three day tournament, right, you got to finish in the top five to move on to the to the national tournament. Right, that's exactly right. You have thirteen teams for five spots to get to go to LaCosta starting Monday. So Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday will be East coast time too, so you know that'll be like anyone following on on online, you'll you know, you'll be able to

wake up and probably start seeing some scores right away. Yeah, Adams and mind eyebrows went up because Adam played La Costa. You would have it might have been about ten or very young, but I remember it. We we got we got the chance to play there several years years ago. He's an old guy now, you know that, so it was quite a while back. All right. Well, Jim, good luck, good luck on Monday.

We'll keep an eye out for you and then we'll see hopefully you know you're talking about going to Nationals. When you get back, I love it. Thanks so much for having me, gentlemen, burn down, go cat. Thanks coach, good luck. All right. That was Jim Anderson, head coach of the men's golf team in Arizona. They're gonna be playing in the regional in West Lafayette starting Monday, a three day regional' there's what I had here. There's thirteen teams in it. You got to finish in the

top five to move on. So we'll see if they do that Arizona. The women just missed it by two strokes when they finished in sixth place at their regional earlier this week. So hopefully a little better, a little better luck for the man. All Right, we're going to be right back. We've got a whole bunch of cool stuff to talk about, a lot of it involving the NBA, some other things happening. There's a show, hey, discussion I want to have with Adham over here today, so we'll have

that. But stick around for that. We'll take your calls five to two zero four, one six. We'll be right back. This is I on the Ball on Fox Sports fourteenth fifty. Welcome back to Balling on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm

your host Ja Gonzalez. My buddy Steve is on the road to Vegas for his birthday, and we'll see if he survives that he makes it back on Monday, I got Ryan running the board and I got a great guest co host, Adam Gonzalez here on the on the show today, we just had a great conversation with Jim Anderson from Arizona Men's Golf. They'll be playing in the regional on Monday. So I want to have this conversation Adam that on this topic that I've been wanting to talk about all weeks since it since it

came out. Steve and I never got around to it. But you're the perfect guy to have this conversation with because you know the NBA more than either Steve or I put together. But also, you know, I feel like, you know, you can have a sense of this. But I think it was Monday, Rivers in an interview was talking about NBA players and NFL players, and he said, I can take thirty guys from the NBA and put them in the NFL right now, but you can't get thirty guys from

the NFL and put them in the NBA. That's been a long you know, there's been that's been a conversation like that over time, including you know, with some guys out of Arizona. So first, just on that premise that just that statement alone. Oh and if you want to, if you want to talk about this, give us a call. Five to zero four one six seventy four forty since that they get the number, right, I'm on five to zero four one six seven four four zero. Give us a

call. We can talk about this or anything else. We're going to talk about this for a few minutes. Your first, your first thoughts on that statement. Okay, First, there's not thirty guys on either side. Okay, okay, let's start starting that. But there's one right answer. There are no NFL guys I could play in the NBA zero zero zero. There are I think NBA guys that could play in the NFL, right, I think it is zero NFL. Yeah, like you could. You could get

some guys to go play wide receiver, tight end. And now we're talking if like you drop them like tomorrow, yeah, not like if you have a year to prepare whatever. Yeah, he said right now, So let's let's let's let's discuss it in this way that the NBA season ends, Okay, it's over. Whatever, All these guys and even if you know the fine, if you're a team, a player that's in the finals, whatever they're they're done in June, that they can go to an NFL camp this

season and play. There aren't many couple okay, there are zero zero NFL players going to go to the NBA. Okay, why do you say that? Well, one think about it. Trent Williams, Okay, he's a giant in the NFL. He is like maybe the best football player in the NFL. He's the size of Lebron James. Yeah, he's six seven, six eight, big dude. He's an undersized power forward in the NBA. Okay, I see where you're see where you're going. There's no seven footers

in the NFL, No No two. The the dribbling aspect, the shooting aspect, Okay, think about this. Everybody everybody in the NBA can shoot. The bad shooters in the NBA can shoot. You put a twenty five j McConnell can shoot. He's me I was gonna see. I was gonna say Jannis ko Okay, he probably shoots like twenty eight percent from three in his career. If you put Janni's an empty gym, take fifty three pointers, he's gonna make like forty eight of them. Yeah, that's not gonna

happen with NFL guy, It's just not They're just not that good. It's just not gonna happen if you had the dribbling aspect, the zero the skill, zero NFL player. Okay, and there are maybe a couple NBA players who good. Yeah, and you know, and really when we're talking about that, like people said Lebron would make a great tight endure in the NFL, you know other guys that size, right, Kevin Durant' is not gonna

go play in the NFL. Think about like Lebron James. He will be the biggest person on the field, on the field every just like that every time. Yeah, you're right, you're right, and he's not. He's never the biggest person on the you know, the one, the one guy. And there's a lot more. Well, you know, we go, we go to the guys that were mentioned in this conversation, Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gate. That proves my point that they played college basketball and then they

were Hall of famers. That proves my point, Like you you it happens every now and then, Oh this guy never really ever played football. Well, he just got drafted in the seventh round. He's gonna go play. How many players never played organized basketball and just got drafted to the NBA. But then there was Charlie Ward won the Heisman Trophy and he's played in the NBA. He is like the one exception, one off. Yeah, they played Division one college basketball, right, and like, uh, I can't

play in the NBA. I'm just going to go try out the NFL. And two of the five, Well, Tony Gonzalz was a really good college football player. He played college football and Antonio Gates did not. But regard Tony Gonzalez did. He played for caln He was really good and I hated him at the time. But anyways, so you know, there's always been that discussion. And he actually got a cup of coffee in the in the in the NFL was Fendi Onobun who game there. He walked on the court

Rember. When he walked on, we said, why is that guy here and not at Arizona Stadium. We said that about him the entire time he was here, you know, and he and he got I think he actually got drafted. I don't even think let's see what you got a free agent contract. I think he actually got drafted, like in the seventh round by the Rams. That could be wrong, sixth rounds around by the Rams.

We've had him on the show. We've been trying to get him on the show coming up, and we're gonna we're still gonna try and do that. So not this conversation has happened. We definitely want to get him on. But Fendy was I mean, that guy was a specimen on the court. Another guy who you thought could do that might have even been Ronde Hollis Jefferson, a little tooth then little tooth you think too thin and too wirey.

Yeah, but okay, think like there are forty math right, forty four players taken after Fendy on him on who didn't play a down of college football and he got trapped. Yeah yeah, yeah exactly. Yeah so yeah, no, good, yeah, that's good. Look And I think people forget on the nineteen eighty eight team. Now again, these guys they were walking on, you know, they they walked on and they helped the team. But you know, Luke brought them on the team because he because they could

help. Craig Bergman was a quarterback of Arizona in the late eighties. Dick Tomy actually Larry Smith recruited him here, but then Dick Tomy ended up getting the job and Craig Craig was a reserve on that eighty eight Final fourteen and then a Tiz Jenkins was a recruit or not a recruit, a reserve in the late nineties. I think he might have even been on the two thousand and one. Yeah, he was the two thousand, yeah, yeah, so he might his senior year, I think with the two thousand and two

thousand and one. Yeah, so he he might have been on that, on that team that also went to the Final four. So Artie's played and he played in some games. Well, Berkman played in some games too, but Bergman would just run out there, go stand at the line, had thrown the ball. You ever play You ever played pick up basketball with football players? No? Oh, it's yeah, it's the worst. Well, speaking of a guy, And we're gonna have this conversation again tomorrow because I

tried to get him today to have this conversation today. But tomorrow we're gonna have Calvani Fahn, who did that about his as well. As anybody at Arizona. He came here as a basketball player, a highly recruited basketball player by lud Olson, and ended up being one of the best players on that ninety eight twelve and one ninety eight football team as a fullback. And that

gets to one of the points that somebody made talking about this today. It was it was that guy he's on Dan Patrick's show, he Texas play, he subs in for him, played football at Princeton. I think big dude. Anyways, he said, he said that you would not be able to drop an NBA player onto an NFL roster in a years and now if you gave him a couple of years to develop, that yes they could. But and he said one of the big things said, those guys wouldn't They wouldn't

be able to take the hitting. They wouldn't last sure four weeks, sure into a season before they're killed. And and so there's there's that. Calviny fun was one of the hardest hitters as a fullback that ever came through Arizona start and started here as a basketball player. And I'll ask him, you know, when you first started getting hit, what was that like for you? After you hadn't been getting hit for a while. Yeah. No, I again, when we would go to the rec center, I worked with

the football team, so I knew a lot of those guys. Yeah, I had a lot of friends on those like kind of mid to late twenty tens teams. Yep. Not not happy when it was a football day at the Wreck. I mean, I Danny, who was a guest yesterday,

guys tooth chipped wow by one of those guys. Yeah, like they're just again because they're so like physical, right and you just come but they don't but they don't have the other skills that they don't to that point, you said you can't drop them in to an NFL team because they'll get smoked. NFL player are gonna fall out in three minutes, right right? Yeah, yeah, So it's a it's an interesting and fun conversation. But you know, I mean, because you see some guys who you know are just athletes,

right, yes, incredible athletes. They can pick up a golf club and golf some can. But here ones okay, here here's the thing that extraordinary athletes can. You know, here's the thing. So you say, who can you do? Can NFL go to NBA and none of them can play baseball. Okay, none of them can play baseball stick holding the ball, holding back something different. Russell Wilson can. Sure, very few of them, Like that's what I'm saying. It's it's I. I hope he's

not listening. I hope they're not listening. But Lamont and and Ricky Hunley I saw them. There was a U of a I don't know if you have a sponsor, was sort of a U of a golf tournament of some sort, and I remember if it was a a n actual tournament, but it was an event where there are a bunch of you of A football players were at this event to golf. Don Pooley was there and he was giving lessons to these guys, and Ricky and Lamont picked up a golf club.

I think it might have been for the first time, and trying to watch and watching those guys swing golf clubs was Yeah, it was actually pretty funny. Yeah. They both play now. In fact, I ran both of them were at this tournament that I played in this last weekend down in two Bacs. So they both play play enough to go put a bunch of money into an event and play, so they obviously, you know, the game grew on them. But these guys, you know, they were, you

know, playing at Arizona and they could not They could not swing. I mean a professional athletes. Buddy, Frankie, you played golf with him that one time, right, we played it. We played in a scramble. He can't swing the club. He can do everything else, he can't swing club. It's very funny. Bo Jackson could swing a golf club. I played golf with him once. I did play golf with Bo Jackson one time.

Really yeah. When he was he was like a consultant with the White Sox and was when I was with the with the t EP and the the Diamondbacks, White Sox spring training golf tournament and he was in my group. He showed up with one golf club. He had a seven iron and that's all he hit. He just hit a seven I all day, hit it a mile. He hit it as far as he needed to hit it. Randy Johnson, I played golf with Randy Johnson. Guy could hit the battle

mile. He was really good. Baseball players. Baseball players can't because they've I said, they've most NBA, NFL players. Yeah, Michael Jordan's I think he's a pretty good player. Then there's Barkley swings a little bit. It has gotten a little better, but in the end, zero NFL players can play in the NBA. A few I think King King go the other throw him in there at the slot receiver, throw them at the edge receiver. Give me some of the guys who you think would be good NBA guys

who would be good uh NFL players? Tyres MAXI is a slot receiver. Yeah, but even Tyres Max he's like what six three six four, so he'd be a big receiver so fast? Yeah? Who else? Somebody? We would you know that, we would all know that. I mean, let me think like Russell Westbrook. Yeah yeah, any good running backs like a Drew Holiday, Yeah, could be a good running back. But I think there's so tall. There's still Drew Holidays like six four six five.

Ye think think about Derrick Henry. How big Derek Henry looks at running But that's an average two guard. Yeah yeah, yeah, Now Derek Henry is probably a little thicker. Yeah yeah, Okay, all right, good good conversation. That's fun. That that yeah, that's uh, it's an interesting concept, interesting thought and there's people are still talking about it, so and

again, we'll talk about it again tomorrow when we get Calvin. The worst part about that conversation was that they brought it up in May instead of like July. This is a July conversation. There's a lot going on. Well, I know, but you know you had Austin Rivers's saying off nervous. Should have brought it up in July. There's nothing, there's nothing else to talk about. Very fun, good conversation. So all right, again we've bet well, we we're running out of time for this segment, but we're

not breaking news. There's other stuff besides the Frank Vogel. Ryan, you're ready for breaking news? Man? All right, man, he's gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna run through some stuff. There's more things to talk about. I want to have this conversation that was had this morning about show. Hey uh Otani, a guy that Adam and I are following, closing now that he's with the Dodgers. But it was really it's really good conversation.

I'll save it for that about well, there's all these comparisons between him and Babe Ruth, right, because you know, Babe Ruth was a pitcher and then he became a great hitter. Uh, show Hayes. You know he's been pitching. He hurt his arm, so he's not gonna pitch it all this year. He's a d h He's he's lighting it up. You know, some questions about his future as far as that goes. So we'll talk about that. All right, we're gonna take our break here in just

a second. Again, Greg Hanson's going to join us. We'll let him in on the show. Hey, conversation. We'll probably have it at the tail end of breaking news, get his thoughts, uh, and talk will probably end up talking a little bit about his Yankees. Well. It also Greg pipe in on some of the stuff that's going on with you have a football and basketball. You know, they're building the rosters again. It's all all going on. It's going to go on for the rest of the summer.

So we'll have all that stuff and then anything else happening. A lot of baseball stuff. I mean, I'm the base I'm really really having fun with baseball right now. It's been well, the Dodgers are good, so that helps, but it's been it's been great to watch and there's a lot of cool stuff. All right, let's go and take our break. Let's go right now, and we'll come back. We'll take your calls to five

two zero four one six seventy four forty. Ryan will be coming back with breaking news and then we'll get into a show, hey, conversation, so stick around.
