Breaking down all the exes at all. It's Steve Rivera and Jaen Zombis. This isn't I Am the Ball on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Hey, welcome back to win the ball here on Fox one, fourteen fifty on Steve, he's Jane. Now he has some breaking news. This is I on the ball breaking news on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. All right, big news of the day are really of Yesterday was the perfect game, so by Mingo German the Yankee, And you say, who what, Yeah, well, yeah
you do. But it was the fourth perfect game thrown by a Yankee in the years that the previous three perfect games were thrown. The Yankees won the World championship. Oh no, it has the tasty stat It was like a nondescript It was a nice perfect game, obviously was one. It was the eight right right, And there was this dude who you know, he was kind or heard of. It came out of nowhere. His previous start against Seattle, he went three and a third, eight hits, ten runs,
eight of those earned. He gave up four homers, and then he comes back and throws a perfect game. Figure bball, go go figure that Steve. But every day is a season you just you know, and that's baseball, right. I mean, guys one day do this and the next day you do that, like golfer or any any other sport. Princeton's on the line right now. Hello the ball as a as a side note to that, UM Darren raveled posted on H on Twitter. And Darren is a guy.
He's got all the memorabilian tickets and stuff like that. A physical ticket to UM, to the game last night, to the perfect game last night is already selling for twelve thousand dollars, just a ticket if you went, Yeah, the ticket, the actual tech. Who's gonna do that? Who? Because everybody's got first viper's got Oh yeah, this was the actual thing. Okay, still okay, twelve thousand dollars as a piece of memorabild No. But what's his name? Is in a good business apparently? George?
George? How all of a sudden it's like the talk of the stuff. How what do you got? What do you got? Two thousand dollars ticket to a game that's not good? Happened? That just happened. This happened, okay, Um, As we were talking earlier, four players, four NFL players have been suspended for for gambling activity or violating the league's gambling policy.
Isaiah Rodgers and Rashad Barry and then a free agent Demetrius Taylor were suspended for the entire twenty twenty three season and we'll have to apply for reinstatement because they were actually betting on NFL games during twenty twenty two seasons, So which is just stupid. I mean, you just gotta be smarter than that. And then another player, Nicholas Petite Ferrari I guess it's a pronounce the name, a Tennessee Times player, was suspended for six games for the same reason
that you know. There's only guy Stanley Barry Hill got suspended for because he was betting on non NFL sports, but he was doing it from the club facility. So those four guys suspended today by the by the NFL, and uh oh and then uh Rogers and Barry, who were on the Cults rost were both waived today. So not only did they get suspended the out of jobs. Yeah, that's too bad. That's too bad. Okay um uh Arizona has a player that's been added to the to the women's under nineteen national
team that'll be playing in a tournament. Her name Breya Cunningham. She's a incoming freshman recruit at Arizona, so she's on that on that roster, and so she was in the trials for the U nineteen team, but now she'll be she's been added to the Well, she's I take nine year twenty U nineteen. She's been added to the U nineteen team, so she'll be she'll
be joining that team this summer, so good for her. UM. As we mentioned, the Kylin Boswell and Philip Leape borrevichan In are waiting to play their uh UM quarterfinal games tomorrow and if they both win, they'll be playing each other in the semifinals. Up and hung should be good. Yes,
so there's that UM. Chase Davis got another All America team. He's a second team All American by D one Baseball dot com, So that's four All America teams that he's been on all the other The other three are also second team American Baseball Coach Association, National Collegiate Baseball Prior Association, then a group called the Perfect Game. So but he's uh, he's gotten a four America teams man. Good for Chase Davis. Um, all right, let's see.
Oh this is well, this is kind of this is more funny than than New Z. But Lebron, did you see this thing between by Lebron James? No, by Teen Wolf? No, you didn't see this, Lebron James tweets out sitting here watching Teen Wolf, which is the nineteen eighty five movie. Michael J. Fox was a ware wolf. He's playing basketball in high school. The last basketball scene when he didn't go back to the
wolf is the funniest basketball I've ever seen. His name, he's got a bunch of laughing emojis, and why or how is his old buddy standing under the rim at the end of the game with free throws? With free throws? Uh well, so at the end of the game Michael J. Fox has two free throws to win the game. He's not he's not the Wolf. So you know they're down by a point. He's going and the guy that filed him, who was on the other team, who's the villain in
the movie, and it was his fifth foul in the game. He literally stands under the basket. But it would never, would never ever happen. My spoiler alert, Michael Jay Fox makes the two free throws and they win. But he's laughing. He's like, there's not realistic. Run. Yeah, but when is the goofy sports movie like that ever been realistic? Right? I mean if if, if, if it's real. They're not going to let a whare wolf play in the game, if you want to get
us about the conversation, right right, this is fantasy. But he's calling out the writers of the movie that he would never be allowed to sit under the basket during the game. I thought that was pretty funny. Um, did we say, do we mention Cedric Henderson? Yeah? Should he signed with the with the Cleveland he was, he was signing with somebody else and
then he just signed with the summer team. Zulus is gonna be playing with the seventy six or summer team because he signed with their their G league teams. So a couple of guys will be playing in the Vegas Summer League right this summer. Did you see and I just saw this today, uh, that they're thinking about expanding the nc DOABAA to ninety six teams. The tournament. The men's best conversation is going, still going, still going. I
mean there's a discussion of it. I didn't know. I didn't know this conversation it was had gone serious. Come on, that's another participation troll. That's and that's another that's around now of of buy first round buys, right, gonna be there's gonna be thirty two first round buys. The reason they went to sixty four teams because when it was forty eight, there was a round of bays and the teams who got the buys were losing because people felt,
you know, the jitters. They still had the jitters when the team who didn't have a buye you know, I played a game, the famous one was Market Wires De Paul team. They won, They lost one game all year and then got beat in the they got to buy and they got beat in the first and that's when that discussion was happening. And then they went to sixty four teams to say nobody gets a buy, so everybody's on the eleven day they added four and how well have those teams done? They
get the first four? Pretty damn good, pretty good. You know, one of them got to the final four. The thing is ninety six is way too much, and maybe they add a couple more. We don't need another round game. We do not need another round. No, and it says, well, it's gonna happen. It's it's gonna happen at some point. I don't know what the number is, but people are saying, like Larnego from Miami said, yeah, let's go ninety six. Tomizo says,
I'm not ready for it yet. You know, Bill Selt says it's going to happen. Ninety six teams. What's the special team? Then you know what it is. You know what the coaches are thinking. Now I can say I got to the tournament even with a crappy team, but I got to the tournaments, so it's gonna be harder to fire me. Yeah, were they thinking about here isn't this isn't the tournament special? Supposed perfect?
Is this supposed to be special? I didn't like it when they added the four because they added the four to stop the arguing about the first four out, and now we're arguing about the net. It's always gonna be arguing about the team sixty nine seventy two. It's always gonna be that way. It's always. Yeah, it's not stop enough. And I will say I will say that it's grown on me, okay, But the first four okay, okay on Tuesday because they have played well, right, and more than anything,
on Tuesday of tournament, we've got tournament games. So the tournament starts on Tuesday, not Thursday. At Thursday's still a very special day. It feels different than those first one. But when I go home from the show on Tuesday of turning a week, I turn it on my turner on the radio in the car, and I watch it when I get home, and I'll sit there and I'll watch both games, and I'll watch both games on
Wednesday as well. To be fair too, that those six, those four aren't included in the brackets anyway, right right, the ones you fill out because they have to wait to see who's going to play in right to me? Enough? Yeah, en me too, me too? And maybe because I sit here in a small room talking about it. But and there's a lot of teams that want to get in, but at some point it's never gonna be enough. What do you think the fan vote? If they asked
the fans to vote, what do you think the fans would vote? That's a tough question. I'm voting no. So let's say sixty seven sixty eight, another four, another sixteen. No, no, no, no, no, I'm just it's going from sixty. It's really going from sixty four thirty two, first round five. No, even if they added sixteen, no no, no, don't do it. There's gonna be some special nest to it, some uniqueness to it. And this is what it is.
Remember when it was forty, Remember when it was twenty thirty six or whatever it was. I remember when I was a kid in thirty two. It was very Yeah, it was hard to get in. It was well, look, Arizona in nine seventy six lost the UCLA at Hoole over there. What was it? What was it there? What was the number back in seventy five seventy six, when probably it was probably thirty thirty two if that, and Usilla was dominated and playing on their whole court. It's a little
different now, a lot different now. But sixty four is enough? Come on, how many weeks are going to be doing these games? I'm votes for yeah, yeah, and maybe and maybe it's it's because that is the older shi older. Okay, So it's so I think the older people are gonna say enough, right enough, young people, are you saying let's do it. My kid's gonna go, hell yeah, another round game. Hey, drafting is gonna go hell yeah, another round game. But you know
that's thirty two more games you gotta play. When are you gonna play those? No, I know you're gonna take you gonna put them all in the weekend with the kids, the kids. Yeah right, I would hate that, Steve. I mean, I know that they've been talking guy as I am old um. You know, I know they've been talking about it, but I didn't realize that the discussions were starting to really get serious about So the metcalf was that camp in Florida, and this was a quote from Izzo.
I just think it's gonna get watered down. I totally agree with him. It's of course it's gonna get watered down. People thought it was getting watered down at sixty four, but they, you know, they realized that, you know the whole They said, Okay, well, yeah, I second see how somebody not having a first round or having a first round by they're still nervous. This team has already played, they've got an advantage, and so they leveled. Yeah, but you're always looking for scheme. Oh
they're they're gonna be rusty. They then you come up from rusty till well rested. There's always these phrases that heard Denver for being resting for these teams to show up. No, they were just a better team. Yeah, game over analyzed. I would not like that very much at all. Now, if they did it, am I gonna watch? Of course, of course I gotta bet on it, probably, you know. You know,
I was just you're gonna put out a bracket with ninety six teams? Yeah, if you if you were part of it, though, I was gonna say something nels uh, if you were in it and you want it. But it was sixty four. I didn't even know how to ask this question. Right now it's special. Do right now? It's special? It is, and not that they would diminish the special, but right now it's special. It's perfect right now or as close to perfect, just because you get
more teams in spacient trophy many participation. We gotta stop that. We do have to stop that. At some point, you gave the trophies to the people that were good for a reason. They were good. Yeah, and you won, you know, prinstance shouldn't have been in the tournament last year, Tommy, he said that I didn't. He said, I'm rubbing not on ar Santa Clara or East Tennessee State. Man. Yeah, look at you. You're being grumpier. You are old. I'm old and crappy.
I'm old and crappy. Oh man, they're there. Okay, the starting to announce the All Star starters. And my boy, Will Smith from the Dodgers did not get the starting catcher condition for it the National League. That sucks. That sucks. He's the best catcher in the in baseball and got some crap ass Atlanta Braves. Guy, you saw that Harden rupted in. But they're gonna try to trade at and he might end up somewhere Crazy and maybe even Phoenix. Okay, here are the Major League Baseball starters. The
starters for the National League. Are they already done? Sean Murphy of Atlantic catcher first base, Freddy Freeman the Dodgers, second base, Luis Arayas from Miami, shortstop Orlando Arcia from Atlanta, third base, Nolan Arnado from Saint Louis. Outfielders are Ronald Lacuna from the from the Braves, Carbon Carol from Arizona, and Mookie Betts. From the Dodgers, and my boy j D. Martinez from the Dodgers is the d This is something I won't talk about
often, but how many Hispanic? How about five, one, two, three, four, five, five out of ten? That's pretty good. No, five out of nine because there's no picture there. That's the national, that's the nationally with the Americans of the American League is coming right out. All right, let's take our second break. We're gonna come back. We're gonna have um um de Wheeler. She'll talk about some summer camps going on this summer. That was a redundant statement, So talk about some summer
camps as I scored the basketball deck. So we'll be right back with Wheeler. This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fiftey. Hey, welcome back to All About here Fox Sports
Spotune fifty. I'm Steve Rivero. He's Jake is also known the Phone. We have DD Feeler former you of a basketball player and a basketball camp coordinator. How are you, DD? I'm great? Thank you, rasking great to have you on the show. You and Felicity Willis are very busy this summer. We are. We've been running camps and clinics throughout since school've been out. And how's that gun? A lot of a lot of participants, A lot of participants. We had a couple of camps over there at Team
of College. I've had some solo camps in which I collaborated with the Boys and Girls Club. But you had great turnouts, a lot of great talent, and a lot of newcomers as well. So I saw you've got some coming up at the Gregory School in mid July. I mean, just tell us a little bit about what you know somebody who participates in these camps, what's the goal for you, right? But what's the goal for them? Absolutely? As you said, we do have a camp coming up July tenth
through the fourteenth. It's a week camp at the Gregory School. The goal for us it's ultimately to share our passion of the sport of basketball with use of the city of Tucson, and so pretty much for us, we do a tremendous job of breaking down the game, the fundamentals of the game. As we teach all of our assets. You cannot progress in the game if you don't master the fundamentals. But the biggest thing when you're working with younger
kids is to also make that learning fun. And so we do a good job of providing them those skills and we allow them the opportunity to have fun. We're learning those skills, you know, providing competition drills with dribbling and shooting and passing, and then at the end we eventually let them you know, team up and put those skills to work and see how those skills have transition over to what they've learned to now actually plan a sport of basketball.
I'm assuming that if you've had a few of these camps already of the summer, you see some of the same participants, same young ladies coming back to get better and to get more experience. Yes, not just a young ladies, but we've had a great turnout of young men and as well. But yes, if they continue to follow you, you're doing something right. But we had a lot of kids that are following us, and we continue to
gain new campers as well. So as now the camp that I'm just looking at the one for the one that at the Gregged schol So that's a week long camp as supposed to a day or whatever, right, so they'll come for several days and be able to man hopefully see some progress. Right.
Absolutely, it's a five day camp. It's four hours each day, and we have a different agenda said each stay and in which we want to put that all together and on that Friday, we want to allow them to compete and put those skills that they've learned, and hopefully that transition the over to making their elementary, middle school, or even high school team, or improving their playing time and skill sets on the teams they're already on. So did
he I apologize now, but I learned a long time ago. I never asked a woman's age. I'm smarter out. But you've been out for basketball for a while here, you're one of the better players here at you of a How have you seen the game progress in your time since you've been gone? Absolutely, the women's game is certainly different from the men's game, and the game itself has progressed. It's becoming faster, the players are becoming stronger.
You have more women out there that are actually dunking, and there's more opportunities, especially financing for women in the game. But the game has progressed in which you're seeing a lot more talent. It's in a lot of more girls that wants to get out there and play, and I think that stams from the role models that they have here with the University of Arizona women's basketball
teams. Those girls idolize those those girls, younger women out there for you and A and they want to do it because of the inspiration they receive each time they are attending games. What are you of A? And of course the WNBA with the Phoenix mercery you have here locally. Wow. And in saying that in this camp at the Gregory School, you said, Sam Thomas
is going to be here? Who you know, I know there's you, I know, there's Ada and some other players that have come through Arizona, but you know, Sam Thomas is sort of like the most recent face of the program. And she's you know, continue to be involved in the community. She's always in a great moved, always fun to talk to. How much has she continued to add to this legacy that some of you guys started here? Oh? Absolutely, Sam Thomas is fantastic. You know, it's
it's the big thing. You know a lot of people talk about players and what they can do on the court, but Sam is it was even more and he still is he's even more. But of someone that makes an impact off the court. She has a tremendous personality. She's a people's person. She loved relationships. She builds those relationships and she's always looking to get back.
She has an upcoming camp as well. I believe it's over at the Sporting Chance in which he again no longer living in Tucson, she's still giving back to the city of Tusig that has done so much for her. But she's an outstanding person. So I'm assuming this because you live here, that you've gone to a few of the UVA games in the recent past. Is that true? Absolutely? On the season ticket holder. Perfect. So there
goes well with my question. Could you have imagined all this stuff, the crowds, the sellouts, the craziness at McHale back in the day you know when you were playing to now it's just how crazy it's become. Oh absolutely, I mean, but it's exciting. It's exciting to play in front of a hundreds of thousands of people. But not that you have a fan base. It's probably the best in the country. I would argue with anyone about
that. But they are encouraging, you know, they are uplifting and the women's team in all of our sports program we have a fan base that it's loyal and there they will ride with us anywhere we go, even when we travel on the road. You know, I go to Vegas or I remember we went down to Santasonia when our women made that run. We had a huge fan base that traveled. Whether that was fine or getting in a car and driving wow. So yeah, I mean it's just it's you know,
it's just gotten. It has gotten crazy. And I know that, you know, Arizona always wanted it to be like that. Always thought if it's like this for men's basketball, why can't it be like that for women's Well, here we are, and I think that, you know, I think you know again, players like you and Adia can can all say that you had a hand in that. But uh, it's been it's been fun to
watch. I think as somebody who grew up here watching this stuff, I feel like it's just really given, given two sound, one more thing to really sink its teeth into. No, absolutely, and it's exciting for our women's program to thrive and seeing exciting players such as Aaron McDonald. You know a lot of people would say when basketball is boring, but to see excitement from players such as McDonald's and other players that will continue to come through our
program. As ad is doing a good job of recruiting those, you know, exciting players from cities and states such as Philadelphia. You'll get that the fans want to see excitement and the women's game, and that's what she's bringing.
It's a different excitement. You know. I covered the men's for a long time, and I remember going there for the I guess the n I T Semis or the finals, and I sit there and actaid, there's no way in the world if someone would have said to me that this place would be a sellout for the women's game twenty years ago, whatever, I would have said, you're crazy. And here i was one of the members watching the game, and I'm thinking, Holy Molly, look at what this town
has become. And I'm sure when you probably went to one of those games, you're thinking, wow, did you kind of have that sense too? I surely did, you know, because the largest fan base they had prior to recently was our fan base. That was very loyal, but it was an exciting atmosphere. Yeah, and those those fans, they show up early and they stay to the end, and that's exciting to see. Right.
So, as as the athlete director at the US, did you get to see the programs and how they're doing and get a sense of, you know, how the how the schools are, you know, how the players are getting better or even at the high school level. Did you look at it that way or is it kind of more administrative for you? But you get to see that piece of it. So absolutely, I definitely get out to our games. I try to get out to our not just our high school
games, to our elementary and our middle school school games. Not just being out there. I'll get out there and I'll direct to track me, you know, for our middle schools and our elementaries. But I follow our programs. I'd like to get to know our coaches by names and by and by faces instead of by names. And I'm very active, and so I'm always out in the community visiting our schools and I'm attending the events. So let me ask you, because I don't know this, what did you go to
school for academically? Oh? Man, where do we start? So I have a BA in education, I have a masters in accounting and also have a masters in finance. So I'm all over place. Well, okay, I need you. But my point is you must be living the good life because you're working some of that, right, the education part of it, but living sports, getting to do that at whatever level you want. I think I have the best job in the world being able to be that advocate,
you know. I tell my story all the time. Athletics saved my life and I couldn't find a better job to be able to have that passion and that experience to be able to advocate for the UT in Tucson, and I do it day in and day out, you know, and it's one of the great players. You know ever at Arizona. You know, your name's up in the rafters and that How much involvement do you get to have with the program at Arizona? What do you get to do? How are
you how do you make yourself for a part of it? Or how do they ask you to be a part of what's going on over there? Well, not much, but also we're looking at my busy schedule. But I do speak to some of the players at times. I'm kind of like a big sisters to a few of them, as well as my teammate and roommate being yell out of Fessel, who's pretty much serving on most of the girls nil deal. She's their representatives, and so I speak to some of the
girls. I give them whatever advice I can give them, especially with a lot of the transitions with the port or with the NIL deal with all the transfers, and most of the time I'm speaking to the girls to stay humble and to remain positive, and you know, with players coming in and out, just you know, stay loyal to your program, work hard, and although someone else has coming in your position, you know, you can only play five players at once, so show what you can do in the in
the weight room and on the court. But that's pretty much the limited access I have had with my schedule. But he is always welcome me. When I first moved back, we would go to close practices and different things like that, and we'll get invited to things. Well, let's take your rain a little bit on the NIL and transfer portal stuff, because it's a whole different world in college athletics anymore. And I don't know if you ever envisioned this, you know, when you were playing and thought, I wish we
had this, or I wish we had that. But it's a whole different ballgame. What do you make of all that? I you know, how do you think it's being handled. Is it good, is it bad? Doesn't need to be rounded up a little bit. I mean, what's your what are your thoughts on all the stuff that's changing the game right now? No, absolutely, and I'll speak my truth. I may upset some folks out there, but it's not intentional. Um. You know, athletics was
just something different from me. But I'm not a fan of the portals. I remember back when, you know, I wasn't happy as a as a freshman. You know, here you have ay and you know it was made because I felt I should have started day one. But I had to say, you know what, what can I do? So I had to get better. I had to prove my friend. But now players don't have to do that. They feel they should be playing, they should have a better
role. They jump in a portal and leaves. It takes away from some of the things you learn as an athlete, you know, and that's the tendatic, the and that's the work ethic, and that's the you know, the discipline to get better. But I think the transport portal's highly driven by the fact that you can go to a location that can give you more money. It's not necessary I'm transferring because I want to better rolled on my team. A lot of those are inspired by I want to transfer to this school
because they can offer me more money than I'm getting at this location. I'm not a fan of it, and message with the matriculation of those high school kids coming out, you know they decide, well, I'm gonna go to University of Arkansas because the senior point guard is leaving, I have an opportunity to go in and start right away. And then you get there, boom, there's another kid that's food and grad from the portal. I am not a fan of it, but it's a business and that's my personal opinion.
But everyone has to do what's best for them. No, I think that we're both in age. There's a lot of people it's it's wrong. It's wrong. I think a lot of people will agree it's wrong and they have to figure out how to reel it back right. But they roll them out at the same time. You know, it's transfer portally in nil maybe they should have did one in any other but to roll them out at the same time as a double f sword in my opinion, but that's just me.

Do they have opportunities like this when you were growing up learning how to play? They did. They had a lot of opportunities like this, and at times, you know, you know, we've had some individuals that will offer sponsorships to those families that you know that may be in need. I've had some kids write the letters. Um, you know, we've had those opportunities. But when I was running up, we did. I grew up in city of Chicago, and so in a big city like that as abundance of
opportunities. And that's why we want to bring this to two Sons. Phoenix have these opportunities all the time. There's not a lot of opportunities for girls. So sometimes our camps are strictly just girls, but we get a lot of acts what about my son? And so we've run a lot of co ed camps, we have girl camp, but two Soon is blacking on the quality quality camps and in instruction for girls, and that's what we want to bring to some song. Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. Subscribe now to the podcast on the iHeart Radio while just surgery. I'm a ball. Hey, welcome back to I in the Walk on Fox Sports Sport Team Cuttie. I'm Steve, He's Jay. We have fourteen minutes. You'd like to give us a call please. You're gonna have stuff posted on the website, yea where we are. I just got the found the graphic for that's that camp that uh Deeed Wheeler and Felicity Willis are doing. So after the show,
will put it up on our social media. Also put up the graphic on Justin Spears golf tournament. That just some stuff to help out, you know, things going on. But you know what I love about talking Toddy Wheeler is that you know these players came from somewhere else. She's from Chicago, by Sam Thomas is from Vegas. You know. Felicity Willis, I don't know where she's from. If she's not from two sous. They're here,
right, and they're still here. They came here to go to school, you know, they made careers here and they're here and as a bonus, they're doing stuff, you know, because of the experience that they had, that they liked the place enough to feel like we want to give something back and that's going. And there's other players, athletes, you know, former athletes who are doing that. So to see the Deed Wheeler, who was you know, you know, legend in Arizona, she's here if she's
working. She's an athletic sent for with TUSD, trying to create opportunities for kids and doing it about taking the time to do these camps right, right, No, I agree, And there's a lot of them. There's a lot of them from all ages. You know, Corey's doing his stuff, and Reggie's here, and and even Joanell's, Brian Peabody's had a bunch of camps over Pema, you know, just everybody's doing this stuff and the thing and again, well Peabody is from here, but so many other people.
You know, some of these people are from somewhere else, right, and they feel like, you know, I like it here. I want to stay here and I want to do good things here. They might leave this type of these weeks, these weeks. Wow. Yeah. But as a guy who loves Tucson, and you know I do because I was born here, I'm still here. I appreciate the fact that those people love my town. I think it's really cool. Yeah. No, it's a good too. Enough. Did you see the And I don't know if this was real,
but I saw a tweet about this that um uh. They were asking Bradley Biel at his press conference, what do you want to you know, what do you want to know about Phoenix? And he said something like when is one hundred and fifteen degree heat? Never? Somebody said, we got bad news for its right, it is right for the next couple of months. Well, I told you that told you that story, right, I told you that story. I was. In fact, he was July. I was. I was in Santa Fe. Grew up a small town guy.
We're gonna go to issue. As a going to go to issue. Family took me to Tempee in July to register, register and spent the day and I'm taking holy crap. And then and then we're staying in This is nineteen eighty six eighty seven, So that's when the temperatures were on hotels, right, oh yeah, And it said one hundred nineteen and it was ten o'clock. And said, that's physically not impossible. You know, here's this dumb, dumb kid for Saturday. I think there's that's something's wrong with that
clock. It was eleven o'clock. It was there's no way it's possible. Guess what, Jay, It's possible. In nineteen eighty nine, I played thirty six holes on what that day I remember the oddest day history, understand the history of Fiens. I played thirty six holes. Are you are well? You know what? Steve was one of those things where we had gotten like the special deal out of Gainey Ranch, which is a really nice place.
Almost They said, they said, you can play twice. Well, we don't want to play eighteen one day in eighteen The next day we played all thirty six holes in one day. When you get cancer, they're gonna say, were you one of them too? That went out there for two rounds of golf. I was only thirty years old, right, you could hack it. I could hack it. But we played after the after the
after the second eighteen. We come off the course, we walked through the pool area center clubs down on the poles that took off our shoes and jumped in the water. There's no choice. I just I don't remember. I can see it like yesterday, one hundred, nineteen eleven o'clock, one hundred, whatever it was. That's not possible. Yeah it is. Then again, I spent the summer in Bullhead City, right, it would get to nearly one hundred and thirty over there. Yeah, it was on the one
twenties. I doesn't doesn't make sense. It was it's very hot, very hot. And the water in the Colorado River, Oh yeah, you couldn't get in it. So because it was so it's coming down from the mountain. It was so cold you couldn't get in it, but it was so damn hot you wanted to get in it. Right, it was. It was crazy. Hey, look we've come to we've come to I'm used to it, Steve. I mean, I'm gonna right, Am I gonna playoffice? We can? No, I'm not. But mostly because they got a
sugar slows game on. There's no question we're used to it. But I think as we get at least for me. Get I love the heat. I'd rather be in this than two degrees or wherever you're my dad, uh, and my dad would we're in a jacket for now, but it's I would do this a lord times better. But as I get older, it's harder. It's harder. It's harder. Yeah, but it's a dry heat. But my dad is my dad was you. I I like the cold, but not for an extent all the time. I didn't learn how to
ski for that reason. I love too damn cold. I love skiing, but I would never have wanted to live somewhere where you gotta deal with snow for multiple days. Welcome. I like what we get. We get snow and it's gone the next day. Right, we'd get to playing it, do whatever, and then we're gone the next day. Um, you know going, you know, we'd go skiing for you know, weekends mostly you know, up in the white mount stuff. And yeah, but that was fun to go up there. You ski you come that, Yeah that doesn't
count because you were there. Oh got cold but not really cool. And and I did that thing one time. I went skiing and Mount Lemon in the morning and I went off in the afternoon. Yeah, welcome to Denver. Yeah, yeah, you could do that right, you know I'm not, but I'm with you. I can take the heat. I can't so many more issues with the cold. You know you gotta wear snow shoes, you got Yeah, you're shoveling snow and people guard won't start now, people
do that purposely going to get gold. Did you see that Nickols always gonna home run? I wanted to bring I'm getting. Yeah. I wanted to play that clip because it wasn't just a home run. It was but shot yea of a home run. Yeah, it was a massive shot. Yeah, from the second basement right the morning after which it had to be tuesday. He did it Monday and so it would have been tuesday. I wanted to cut, cut the clip and play it, and I forgot a big
shocker. I forgot something. As we get older, it's ter forgetting. It's okay, but you know what, it's catching up with my wife. She's starting to go too. And then she's like, it's called the jay disease, just catching up, catch it up to you, but you know it's it's happening, And I told her it's it's accelerating for me. I mean I probably I'm gonna say twice a day I get up to go do something. By the time I get there, I forgot what I got up to do. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No. You can
go through a wall and you can kind of go through the door. So what was I supposed to do? Then you have to come back through the door, and they have to go back and say, oh, yeah, I remember that. I'm getting these days. I can't stop. I love something, but yeah it away. Yeah, I won't say where I got it from. It was good, all right, Okay, anyway, anyways, um right, so we're taking the fourth of your laf What are you gonna do over the weekend? Oh, this is stupid. No, I'm
gonna be here. I'm gonna I'm gonna go. This is stupid. I just talk about being hot. I'm going to Phoenix for a couple of days. This is not hot enough for me. Then you can't be bitching about this. I'm gonna be the hotel, so it's gonna be fun. It is, and then go in. You know, I hate being in the fire, but I'm gonna go get in the fire. Give me some medium wings, No, No, give me some hot wings. I get to end it. No I can't. I'm gonna be indorsed obviously, all right,
but yeah, just to get out of town. I wanted to go home to eighty two degrees, but yeah, you know, I didn't want to drive success. I'm an hour or so. Yeah, and we're done. We're doing Montlem to go. Just off for the day up a Mount Leon. Wait, there's a fun thing that goes on up there. And maybe maybe I'm giving away the secret, but they do this little parade. Oh yeah, yeah, it's really cool. It's just like a man made money minute parade. Yeah, just people who live up there, and we
have probably they do. You know, some people just you put on costumes and a walk different things. Those are the coolest. They're very cool. You just sit down, you know, we will take a picnic up there. We'll pick nic, we'll sit out for the parade. We'll go to the cookie cabin and we'll come down and get some candy. Yeah, they'll
throw they'll toss candy out at you. The bagpipe group comes in and you know, the fire engines come through there, and it's just it's just kind of funny, little community parade like you would see him, you know, in a movie in a small town somewhere, and so we always do that. And so this is the first year our grandson. He's you know, he's six months old. And we took Adam up there when he was a well a little older than that though, he was a year of change.
Yeah, so we took him up there as a little kid. And continuing the tradition. Manns, I don't think I've been there. Maybe once you go up there much, No, maybe once ever like Mount lem Yeah, no, I'm not that guy, you know. But see I'm not that guy either. But you go up there at this time of the year, You get up there, and you go, why don't I come up here
more often? You really do work for me. It's because there's something, you know, we know you left cabins up there, but we generally go up there, you know, gets there's a there's a subway sandwich shop at Kenleena Highway and tank AVERTI just go up there, get some sandwiches and go up and go find the places in the grass it sit down a knee and then hang out. Well. See there's we stayed, but my actually I stayed at her employees cabin for a weekend. I'm just not a I'm not
a camping guy. I grew up in the No it's so much work. I'm not a camping guy either. We we go up there, just not good at just. I stopped camping with my folks as soon as I was hold enough to say I can't go because I gotta work. So that was when I was sixteen. Sorry, you know I got, I got. I got my first I mean I had a paper up before that, but I got my first real job McDonald's when I turned sixteen early August, and my parents went camping that Labor Day and I said, I can't go.
I gotta work work. I didn't truth. I'm afraid of You're not gonna find it. I'm afraid of snakes. Well that too, I'm definitely. I'm definitely afraid of fact. In fact, I bought me a bag of anti rattle snake stuff. They sell it. They have they have pellets or the granulars. Can you put them around your house? Hell? Yeah, the work, it's I haven't seen the snake. Yeah, oh, I definitely I didn't know that there was. I didn't either until I saw it.
It's just a bag of stuff, bag of pellets. You kind of spread it around. I know I had I had one in my house, but in your house, yeah, Buck eighteen years oh yeah, yeah, yeah. We had a party. Apparently we had a party, a citizen party I think, and people in the back didn't close the door properly. Three weeks later it was in. It was a it was about two feet long. And it's a funny story. So I'm, you know, the kids are asleep, the wife's asleep. I'm going through the through the hallway
and I'm kind of going to use the restroom. And I looked back and there was something in that in the in the hallway, and I said, damn, kids, put your toy snakes away. And it started to move. I almost pop, almost poop my pants. So I said, hey, I get all right, So no kids standing in the rooms because you couldn't do so it went into the pantry. I got my boots on and put some boots on. This is like the nine o'clock. Got some golf
clubs. I haven't, And I jabbed and jabbed and jabbed and jabbed in that pantry until I kind of hoped that I had gotten at a time or two. So I pulled everything out with the glub and he was hanging by my golf club. You're killed. Hell yeah, No, I'm not saying I'm not sad that you but I didn't. I had no YI was either kill you, jabbing and sabb because I'm not gonna let that run loose,
you know what, I would have moved. And then another time we had one because we have an hrim I to keep in the house hrim and there was a king snake. It was a little baby baby one scared the poop out of me. Two two years later it was a big, biggest living there. So the wife, the wife at that time, called the fire department to get it out of the house. I was not gonna step that one. Definitely would have moved. It was it's no, it's scared.
You have no idea. I'm gonna say that. There's a reason we live in neighborhood with a bunch of houses as opposed to you know, one of those places in the desert. That's a that's a that's a reason you know we live there. You know, there's our house across the street, there's a row houses and behind them, so that's where they come from For some reason, they don't cross the street. I guess because the street is hot,
right, so all the snakes stay, all the rattlesnakes. We haven't had a rattlesnake on our side, on our side of the street that you know, that we know. But people on the other side, you know. I was trying to go late out there. Yeah, we got a couple of weeks. But what the hell you should go? Look there movie. We can't take the call. Yeah, we can't take your call. Sorry, Oh okay, got about a minute. No, no stuff. No, I know. I watch wherever I go because I don't really don't
want to step on one. You know, I works like my site. If I take the trash out at night, I take a flashlight with me. I'm cautious about this. We did have a little baby rattlesnake. Those are just as but you know, on our on our front porch one time. Yeah, okay, maybe, but those those little those those foot two the baby was. They don't control the animal. This was a baby baby. It was like not even a foot long, maybe six eight inches.
I don't know what we're talking about. This killed it with a rake, yeah, a short line, yeah, a short line. All right, how do we get into that? You said you started it. I said you said snakes, snakes trumble. You don't know. All right, thank everybody for being here. We'll be back tomorrow. Uh, and then we're off for the We're off for a few days, but be sure to come back tomorrow. Listen to the podcast on the iHeart app. We'll be back tomorrow.
