This is I on the Bone with Steve Rivera and Jagan Zali Son Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services and Sure your most Prized Possessions kat z R two SA in iHeartRadio Station. Hey, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to I on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. He's Jagan Zaus got our guy Ryan in today. I'm shocked. I'm working with two guys today in studio. Dallas lost and so did the Dodgers.
Oh god, really, that's where we're gonna go, like right out of the right out of the box. Well you know what, Okay, Well back at you. You know why, because I was told to give you a rash of crap because you were so certain that the that the Mavericks were gonna win yesterday, and you were wrong, and I'm collecting because of it. That's a bad mistake on my part. I'm still with it. It's like following forward and getting a better job. You were you were just
dead freaking wrong. You had no shot. I was That was my that was my my mode and no one can see it on the radio here, but my module of Jagan zawis giving the reverse psychology of the win and then they went to lose. They'll lose and then they win. No, just seeing o Ryan. I did not take the Mavericks last night, all right, so the kiss of death. I did not put the kiss of death on him. I had nothing to do with it. I did Game two
though, well, yeah, that one I did. But I did take the under because with Porzingis being out and I hit that, I hit it relatively comfortably. Was it was? It was two fourteen and I think the final was like two eight or something like that for game two, No three less, game Game three three, Game three, and I hit the under in game three. So uh, you know, I'm I'm doing I'm doing well. I've bet on all three games that I've hit two and lost one.
Okay, there's that, There's that. There's that or the Dodgers man that was that was crap. That was a good game. I saw someone. The thing is the guy that beat him. Corey seeger a a former Dodger. Yeah, b on my fantasy team. Well did you got some points? Well, I don't care. I didn't want to. I'd rather my team sucks. So it's not like I'm in the hunt, so if pory Seger doesn't score any points, I have no problem with it. I'm I'm so far I'm in last place in my fantasy. I'm so far out
of that I just fell out of my chair. Hold on, well, that's what It's summer, man, it's summer. You have some juice, like you say, some juice. Yeah, so anyway, okay, hey, welcome to Thursday. Another day we gotta get through. Here we are on Thursday, another hot day. A good show today though, got some good guests. Yeah, we do this. It's gonna be fun. Uh, we were We're gonna talk to John Wilner. He's always on top of the business of college athletics with all the stuff that's going on. He's also
you know, he's in a transition, right. Uh. PAC twelve hotline is probably going to be no more because there's no PAC twelve. Yeah. Well, the kind of is at the PAC two. But I don't know what they're gonna end up calling that. But he's, you know, he has said in the past, so he's going to cover all basically all the PAC twelve teams, just having to cover them in three different conferences, actually four different conferences if you count whatever conference, Washington State and Oregon Stadium.
But John will be in to talk about just how things are going. You know, there's a lot of stuff happening. You know, we saw today that the Big twelve is selling the naming rights to or maybe selling the naming rights to the conference, which is kind of weird, but okay. And then Roxy Bernstein, who we wanted to get him on right after Arizona's well, right after the PAC twelve Baseball turnam right right, it was the last PAC twelve network event. But that Monday, I think it was Bill Walton
passed away. You know, Roxy was you know, the Roxy and Walton were close, so we didn't want to bother Roxy, you know, come on the show and tell us about things, you know when he was probably not feeling great, So just kind of let him be for a little bit. But reach back out to him this week and he's going to be on today in the four fifteen at about four fifteen, Yeah, which is gonna be great. We'll talk about all the things that were in the PAC twelve
pack ten back in the day and his time with Loot with Wistollen. Yeah. So yeah, and just I mean, you know, he's got he still has a gig. Right, he's an ESPN guy, so he's still got a gig. Some of the others, don't, you know. I'd like, you know, somebody like to get on. Is Ashley Adamson. You know, what's she gonna do? Right, I mean she's sort of her and Yogi Roth sort of the face of the network. Yeah, I'm sure, along with Bill Walton. But you know, I'm sure they'll find
something doing something. Yeah. So the thing about the marketing, how the market is so crazy? Yeah, yeah, when you like to think. And she's good, I mean, she's really good, and she's one of the nicest people you know on the planet. So it would be be nice to see where she lands. But anyways, but Rocky Burns, he will join us, and he was at the Kentucky Super Regional this last weekend, so he's still doing hot baseball. I don't think he's doing the cauldrole.
Seriously. I think it starts today, doesn't it. Yeah, I'm not too sure. Looks tall you Thursday probably probably let's go run. You gotta get on that for us, But uh, but that you know, and then of course you got your dang, Celtic, you're killing Chris. You're killing Chris on that bat. Yeah. Well he wanted to make it. I said, okay, i'll talk take more money. I'll take your money. Good money is for free money. And Ryan's going dang. Yeah.
Well it's just the way they play. They're the best day with the best team O year. They're noticing Ryan, where's the gear? I just like wearing it today. It's good gear. You bring on next year. I'll work tomorrow. Yeah. Yeah, we'll see what happens. I mean, it was a good game. It was a good game for the final minutes until, you know, until it wasn't it a fourth? Yeah, I mean yeah, I mean they were down for twenty one and and you know, and I just I was doing some work and I had it on in
the background, and then I heard him say it's down to four. And I'm like, holy, you know, and I stopped. I stopped what I was doing to watch the rest of the game. I was. I was sitting in my recliner just I was just like sitting, just like hunched over just listening to it. I was like, I can't really watch it. It's it's over. They're down by twenty going to the fourth and and then I just okay, they got to they got a few baskets here and
there, and then it just slowly started. Yeah, okay, well maybe they're gonna come back. Well, you know, as you have said a million times, Steve, nothing happens to the fourth quarter. Yea. I was with a bunch of people less time said wait, hold on, game's up. Over until it's over. I know you always happen. I know you're bummed that they're they're they're down three, But did you I mean,
do you even think that that this would be happening. There's a part of me that's not that's not shocked, Like I I really thought Boston was just gonna come out there. They are the better team, like the right they have They have five guys on the court at a time that are better than the Mavericks five. You know, you have Donchence, you have Irving that are really the two pieces for Dallas. I mean, Josh Green hasn't done much, Derek Lively hasn't done much. PJ. Washington has done a little
bit. But I mean Boston's got they yeah, like they can shoot it from anywhere on the court. Right and make it. That's frustrating because I'm like, I mean, I had no idea how Al Harford could shoot from outside either, that's stupid. Well, that's the whole thing. I mean. If you're not a big guy, you can't shoot outside, you're not worth anything anymore. Yeah, you have to. You have to. Yeah, you have to if you're gonna play some time. Look at Channing front,
he just reinvented himself. Yeah, and every and now the other guy, the kids now coming out, they have to. It's like that's why these kids that we see every day with h you know, with Johnson and some of the other ones, they needed to learn how to shoot from the outside. They could be very talented, as Johnson is, right, but he wasn't good enough or isn't good enough from the prember I mean maybe twelve ten feet yes, but twenty one feet yeah, yeah, no, I
hear you. And yeah, I mean, and that's it. You know, that's the thing that you hear. The most of the Celtics are just you know, all the way down there, all the way down the line, just have better players. I think Brown, I think he's going to be the m v P. Brown. Yeah, Ja he's really done. Plus, the Mavericks are four or five seed, the fifth seed. Let's not forget there were a fifth seed, yeah right, you know, and now they're in the finals, so well, you know that it's caught up
with them. Well, and this has caught up with them too. And I'm sure you heard this right about the back court with him, Irving and Luca be the best backcourt in forever whatever, and yeah, stop stop police. I mean, there's pretty good combos out there that you know, maybe they were for the last three weeks. Sure, well, and that's it, just last three weeks, but not overall, not overall over time, you know, because they hadn't been playing well. But that's a head heck
of a statement. Irving didn't do anything in the first two games, like if he had actually what he had been doing in the season or throughout the other playoff series, they might have had a chance. Actually, let's also say that there's a big reason for that. Boston's pretty damn good and not making them do what they can do, you know, and Luca last night kind of went overboard and did he you know, got trouble, got trouble, blah blah blah. It happens. I mean, that wasn't played.
They've played good defense against them, but like I said, Boston just can make it, shoot it from anywhere. Yeah, so the reason they were the favorite going in right, you're there, Okay, Okay, I just wanted to I hate sweets, you know, because he looks so forward to the finals, right, whether it's Stanley Cup, whether it's the World Series, whether it's you know, the NBA Finals. You want it to last a while. I want this to go, you know, towards the end
of June, because then it's like it ends. It's like, okay, now, what are we going to watch baseball? I know baseball, and I watched baseball every day, but it's still you like to have stuff. Well, speaking speaking of baseball, the College World story starts tomorrow tomorrow, okay, all right, Virginia North Carolina. I don't have any interest in them. Yeah, I need to do. And it's an all SEC that's why. That's party, Like I don't really care, you know, that's
partly why. And I don't know if I can remember off the top of my head right now, any of these star players. You know, last year you could kind of see LSU with their guys. There's that picture. Who's now with Pittsburgh Gonzales is having enough fantastic? Yes, the scheme is this name. I can't forget any schemes. Who's there's some guys that you want to see this year? I don't know. I don't Maybe I just don't know, but I can't remember any of the top of my head.
I haven't followed it closely enough to kind of pick out. Yeah. In fact, I watched some of the Softball because I was just interested to see how how good or maybe Oklahoma would not win it, and they eventually pulled it off. I watched zero of the of the game series for yeah, oh that's by the way. Let's see if I can try to get to Texas eighty Uh contry to see you because he's had a good year to see he says, yes. I say, yeah, I was gonna say a
bad word Steve. Yeah, well I was gonna say a bad word in Spanish, So that might happen either one. It might happen. See, I'll try to track him down and see if we can't get on censor. Yeah, that might be hard. That might checked tomorrow. Okay, what else that's been a good, good couple of guests here, uh running into well when when you get to breaking news, the uf A released it's Hall of Fame class for this year. So we won't mention any of the names
right now. We'll let Ryan bring those up during during breaking news. I've got one. I've got one to debate. But okay, okay, yeah, we'll talk about all that if it wouldn't be personal with you. There's eighty, there's eight and this one really one in there somebody that I really really like, Okay, I do like some people. Really, there are some people that I like. There are some people that like. I got a little story to tell about that guy. Okay, cool, very cool,
mam. I think I got a guess. I'll guess about that one. Yeah, Okay. The US opens going on. Yeah, Tiger Tiger Woods was leading, was leading for a second well after his first hole, and then then he went in a stretch where he bogued I think four or five holes or something like that. I thought that was because way horrible, Yeah, Michlson. But Tiger's he's in position to make the cut. He's in over, he's four over, he's in uh now, actually he's dropped
a little bit because of more guy's playing. Ah, he's in ninety nine, so he's not in position. He's gonna have to he's gonna have to get his uh you know what and gear tomorrow. But Scottie Scheffler is not is not doing well. He's in He's currently in four first place. He's one over after fifteen. The lead right now is and I'm really mad at this, really mad at this. Patrick Can'tley because I had him last week and he missed the cut and now he's leading the US Open at five hundred
par. But I will say the guys that he did take louvig Oberg he's from Sweden and he's minus four, so what jrokeout? So I'm happy about that. Don't let him know that you took him. And bryceon de shambles up there. He's four over after fourteen, so I'm not rooting for him either. He's a live guy, So there you go. Okay, anything else in school early is three now? Yeah? I mean I heard radio lam. Hey, welcome back to Iya the ball hero Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. He's Jagins always now and if we have John Wilner, Oh, the PAC twelve hotline, John, how are you? I'm good. Thanks. How you guys doing. We're doing well, thank you. It's only one hundred and ten degrees here, so it's a ball meet. It's okay, Hey, are you busy? You hot over there where you're at covering the what's left of the PAC
twelve, Well, it's busy. I mean what's left of the PAC twelve, the Big twelve, the Big Ten. There's a lot going on, and most of the things that go on are going on affect everybody. I mean, the Big Twelve had a little bit of news today when they said they were when they were Sports Sam, they are looking at selling the basically the naming rights to the conference could be the All State twelve before we know.
It's there's tons going on these days. Yeah, we're having a little discussion about that, and you know how much value there really is and all all that stuff. And I said, well, you know, I mean, we know it's the All State Sugar Bowl. We know, it's a Capital One Orange Bowl, you know, all those things, So there is some value and if they think there's the most important thing is All State has to think that there's some value, and then then the Big twelve gets gets
their money. But with all this stuff that's going on, how are you keeping up with all of it? You know, I mentioned off air, there's stuff going on in Congress. There's the fact that all these teams now that are changing leagues. They're in those leagues now right. I know we're not to July one yet, but essentially, you know, for Arizona, we're talking about their pack, their Big twelve season coming up, We're done talking about the Pac twelve. All their sports are over with. How are
you keeping up with all of that? Well, it's tough. I mean what happens on the field is in a lot of ways secondary, especially right now. I mean it's it's hard enough to keep track of the transfer portal right much less everything else. I just do a lot of reading and make a lot of phone calls, and I end up looking up lots of legal terms that I'm might familiar with, because there's certainly plenty of stuff legally that is impacting what's going on. I mean, you know Brett, your Mark,
the Big twelve commissioner. He addressed the Arizona Border regions last week, so I was watching that, and yesterday the California Border regions naming chance for and then you got these everybody going to Congress asking for help, and you've
got the legal settlement and that billion dollar A and I trust case. I mean, it's it is non stop, and the stuff that happens off the field is gaining significance every month in terms of the impact that it has on the field because it affects the money the schools have, and the money affects you know, coaches, your ability to hire coaches. It's going to affect your ability to recruit athletes because of nil. So it's it's hard to keep
track. But it's also NonStop news. We talked about the money all the time, and you write about it. I think a couple of days ago you tweeted about the Washington being in financial trouble and I turned to James says, push comes the sub show. Wouldn't you say that all the schools are in trouble because of COVID or otherwise. Not all of them, but most of them are. Yeah, the Huskies have got they're looking at like thirty
million dollars in debt, and some of that's from their stadium renovation. Both Arizona schools are deep, deep in debt. Right, Most of the schools in the PAC twelve are. Oregon is kind of the exception, and part of that's because Oregon's got a very you know, rich donor base with one
guy in particular. So no, there's problems all over the place, and it's just going to get worse financially because once the settlement of this anti trust case takes effect, which is probably in the fall of twenty five, there's gonna be twenty to thirty million dollars more and expenses every year. Schools are gonna have to share revenue with the athletes for twenty million and then you're gonna have another ten million and increase scholarship costs. So that's why the Big twelve,
for instance, is looking to sell the name big right. Why the Big twelve could become the All Stay twelve is because the schools need every dime making get Yeah, you know, we were talking about you know, naming
rights and stuff like. And you know, my position is whatever you got a name and that you can get money for it, then just do it because I'd rather I'd rather you do that than say we're gonna kill this sport or that sport or whatever because we don't have any money, or you're not gonna be able to compete with the other schools because they have more money than you do. I said, name it all, you know, name the palm line, whatever you want to name. Name it if you can get
some money for it. Well, this is how far are you willing to go on that? So you're okay with the All State twelve? But are you okay with the you know, pick a corporate name as the Arizona Athletic Department sells its naming rights to pick a company in the In and Out Wildcats, Okay, that could be next. It could be next, the All State, the All State sun Devils, Yeah, Starbucks, Huskies, the
Nike Ducks. I mean that is potentially coming down the road. I mean we're going to see corporate logos on midfield and every one of these football stadiums in the year or two because schools are going to sell that space it's the up and down Wildcats. You know, hey, you know what they did in that seventies movie roller Ball, right, So I mean it worked for them. I think it would work for us. No, I mean,
but I'm thinking that things are like Michael Center, Arizona Stadium. You know, if you have to name them the state competitive, then name them. You know, I'd again, I'd rather you do that, then say we're going to cut out golf and gymnastics and whatever other sports you know are are dragging everything down because we know they're not going to ever cut out football and
basketball because you know they're they're the ones bringing the money. But there's other things at stake, and you know, I like turning on well now it's going to be streaming, you know in Arizona baseball game, right, And if stuff like that is at risk, and then I say name it all,
well, I think we're going to get there. We are going to get there eventually, and it's not going to be a slow process because this House, this House Lawsuit settlement is you know, a red alert for the schools because if you can't compete for the for the power for conference schools,
the revenue sharing figure is somewhere around twenty one million a year. You don't have to go all the way to twenty one million in revenue sharing, but we know that any school that doesn't is going to risk getting slaughtered and recruit right right. So, so, John, So, of the of the thing you're talking about with Congress and the lawsuit of the twenty million, twenty two million, whatever million is, is every every student athlete gonna get paid
and what's the equality of what they're gonna get paid women? Well, we don't know. That's that's one of the there's a whole lot of unknowns. One of them is are will that twenty one twenty two million have to be split equally between men and women? Will most of it be able to go to football and men's basketball players? How will it get split up within the teams? And also how's it gonna you know, how are they gonna pay for it? But the title nine piece is to be determined, and that
is a very very important piece. We're not going to know. So the judge has to approve the settlement terms, which is supposed to happen, you know, later this summer early fall. Once once the judge approves the settlement terms know, then there will be a lawsuit on the Title nine front, and we're gonna have to wait for that lawsuit or lawsuits plural, to play out in the court systems before we know how Title nine is going to be
impacted by this revenue sharing plan. You say there's gonna be a lawsuit, I mean, you know there's gonna be a lawsuit regarding Title nine once they figure out. I mean, I'm guessing. But the NCAA gets sued every week about something. And the other thing is that there's there's an ongoing anti trust case in Colorado that a former UH Colorado running back filed against the n cuble A. That is not part of the settlement that just happened. It
could it, could you know, render this settlement moved. We have no idea, but there's almost no chance there won't be some kind of legal action on Title nine with the with the revenue sharing. So the funny thing about it, you got into sports writing for a reason, got into it briefly for a while. I did it for a while a long time. This is not why you're talking legal ease when you should be talking about maybe games and scores. You No, it's not but that it's the world right now.
I find a lot of the stuff kind of very interesting. I find media rites interesting, some of the court stuff interesting. But I have spent a lot of time reading through legal documents in the last I don't know, nine ten months, and there have been some time. There have been some times where I thought, boy, it'd be nice to just kind of focus on who's playing quarterback for so and so. But it's the way of the world, and it's not gonna it's not going back to where it was.
That's the thing. Until I don't think that there's going to be uh, you know, cessation of all this legal stuff until there's collective bargaining, right, because you can't have a legal contract between players and schools unless it has been collectively bargained. There's no union in college football, so we're until that happens, it's just going to continue, right. They have to get to an NFL or NBA style collective bargaining agreement, but that's a long ways off,
all right, So the athletes have no reason to do it. Why would you join a union? Right now? If you're an athlete, you can transfer as often as you want and be eligible. You're going to get revenue sharing, and on top of the revenue sharing, is nil is going to continue. You've got it made. If you're an athlete, there's no reason to unionize. So the NCAA has screwed up so badly that it has put the players in position where they have no motivation to do the thing that
would stop the chaos. Well, with that said, with the NCAA, is there a chance that they could just enough, we can go bankrupt, or we can just say call it a day and change our name and do something else. They can't do that because there are what a thousand schools in the n double A, eleven hundred, Right, it's three divisions, and the stuff that's happening that we're talking about affects us a small percentage of all the athletes, right, I mean Division three tennis player is not impacted by
any of this, but they still are part of the NCUBLEA. And that's the root of the problem. Is the NCUBLEA is an association that is intending to fit the needs meet the needs of Alabama and also North Alabama, right, and Georgia and the Citadel and Kansas State University. Right. So you can't there's no way that the NCAA can function properly with such a diverse membership, and that's part of the reason we're in this position. Okay, I
want to talk about football. So you know, so, as I said a minute ago, you know, okay, everyone's in the Big twelve. Now let's talk Big Feuve football. You got you know, U c L An USC there in the Big ten. Let's talk Big ten football. What do you see happening with these schools, you know, the USC and U c l A, Oregon, Washington. Are they going to be you know how competitive you think they're going to be in the Big ten and then the
Big the team's going to the Big twelve. Where do some of those teams stand? You know, who's got the best shot at you know, making making an early impact. Well, I think if you're looking short term like this fall, you know, Oregon to me is right up there with Ohio State as Big Ten title contenders, playoff contender. I'm not sure about the rest of those schools. They've got some trouble, especially if USC doesn't figure
out how to play defense. Longer term. Uh, you know, USC got a chance, but I think UCLA is in Big trouble competitively in the Big ten, and I'm not sure how well Washington's gonna do. Big twelve. I think, you know, Utah and Arizona is certainly set up to do pretty well this season, But long term, how well do I think they'll do. I don't know. I think Utah, as long as Kyle Whittingham is there, they'll be real good. I'm not sure about the Wildcats
in football least. The strength of the Big twelve is also the weakness of the Big twelve, and that is parody. Right, It's going to be really competitive week to week. There's probably five or six teams that you could make a case for as a preseason favorite, but there's also no there's no blue bloods that you're like, that's appointment TV. I have got to watch
that game unless you're a fan of the particular teams. So the parody will make for great games, but it also means I don't know that the Big twelve is really a serious can contender, for instance, for the national title. So you've been busy with a Pac twelve all these months and years, so now you'll be three times as busy with the other conferences pretty much. YEP, pretty much. I'm covering Big twelve, Big ten, TAC two, some acc But you know, again, a lot of the stuff that
happens has an impact on all the schools. They are in different conferences, but they still share a lot of the same challenges, and you know, competitively, they're still going to be playing each other. Like I mean, I think it's great Arizona and UCLA are going to play in basketball every year. That's an important series for college basketball on the West coast, right and
hopefully there'll be other series like that. It'd be great, you know, for them to find a way for a goof for instance, Utah and Oregon football to play on a regular basis. So we'll see how it plays out. But it is certainly not boring, No, not boring. Well, you know again, I can't wait for the football to really, you know, the conversation to really start on that and just all this ot of stuff, whatever's going to happen it, just let it happen to me. Let's
get to the end of it so that we can move on. But I know we're a long way from that. We are we are just all this stuff is just the end of the beginning. Well, John This is the end of This is the end of the show for us with you. Thanks, Thanks a bunch, John Sta stay is that fun because it's gonna being right. Yeah, it's gonna be crazy. For those who didn't who missed with John was on the show for fifteen minutes there. It's depressing. Sometimes not he's not depressing, it's depressing that. And during the break, I was going back and look at how long has this stuff been going on? NIL Transfer Portal, you
know, the the all the relignment stuff that happened. This is going to be the fourth academic school year that we've been you know, the NAL started. NIL started officially July of twenty twenty one, so right after the independentive and that was all so when UH Oklahoma and Texas announced they're going to the SEC. So all this stuff that we're talking about now this is the fourth season that we're that we're talking about it. I'm tired of it. So
let me ask you. He was talking and we were asking the questions. I was thinking, so who are the winners? Who are the losers in this? And who are the winners? And depends on what your answer. I don't think we I st don't think we know, right. I think I think, you know, some of the winners are going to be the schools in the Big Big ten and SEC making a bunch of money. Right, But in the end, you know, are they going to have are they going to lose sports too? Right? Are they making enough money that
they're not going to lose. Uh, you know some of the some of the sports that don't bring in money. So let me this is why I asked the question. I don't know because who knows how much money people have and when will it run out? And we talk about that all the time. Your dad, you're kind of the Big twelve or or you're you're an institution. I think the winners clearly are the students and how they get right there the students. Okay, so you have a family. I have a
family, we have kids. We want to take them to vacation. I kind of bring up this analogy all the time. But you don't have the money to go on on this trip, and who's gonna be Who's gonna be the one that fault for that? The kids don't give a crap about they're not They give a crap that they're not going, but they don't they look at you and say, Dad can't provide for us to go to this thing? You're you're the bad guy. Yeah, because how much money do you
have to support all this stuff? There's only a certain amount of money. And Steve, it's really when you think about that, it may be just a small percentage of the athletes because you're gonna get right. You know, the football and basketball players are going to make hundreds of thousands of dollars and already are right. But the tennis player, the volleyball player, the Olympic swimmer, Dude, we're not getting anything, and from year to year is
not going to know if their support is going to be around. We had this example last year at this time when Delaneys smell and were the well in our eyes, were the face of the program because of what they did all year and we're fantastic and what they tell us. Yeah, I'm getting my
name on a sports bottle, but that's about it. You know, No, I and and and I think I think one big loser is the fans because of because of how athletics and I understand it had to change because and it should have changed a long time ago to give the athletes more of a piece of the pie. And had they done that, maybe we're not in
the position that we're in. But you know, for those of us who grew up with amateur athletics being you know, college athletics being amateur athletics, we're the ones losing because we've lost one, those of us who live here, we've lost our conference. Right, we're in the Big twelve. We're going to Waco and and Lubbock instead of LA and San Francisco and and and the history of you know, the of college athletics, particularly football, that's
meant so much to us is gone. Yeah. Well the good days are gone. So we've lost. So we're losers. We're big losers in this. Yeah. It's and I think, you know, I think some of the smaller schools, how is the Division two school gonna pay pay pay its athletes? They're not, well, they're not going to I don't think right. They're all in cua A schools. They're all they don't fall under the talking about the division too. And but they're gonna have to make some special
rules to deal with you. Yeah, I don't have good luck with that because they ain't gonna happen. I mean, there's a thousand schools, Steve, there's it's not there's no way we're gonna there's no way. I know, we talked about the wild, wild West. There's only a certain amount of money in your wallet to spend. And they ain't gonna go that far.
It just in the real world, it's just doesn't work the right right, And then again that and then the fans, not only I mean Steve, I'm look, why why you can NBA teams, NFL l be pay their players what they pay fans. The tickets tickets have skyrocket. I mean, they're making a lot of money off TV, but you can't go to a you can't go to a major league sport for twenty bucks anymore. No, right, get the food right, and so all that costs so much more. And guess what the fans have put up with it? Sure,
and you feel like how how that's good? That's going to have to happen in college. But the question is college fan is different from NFL fans, right. NFL fan is going to die for their team, and if it means I gotta go, I gotta pay one hundred dollars for a ticket instead of forty dollars per ticket, I'm gonna pay that, and you want I'm still gonna buy the two hundred dollars jersey. I'm still gonna buy the twenty five dollars beer. But I don't know if college fan is going to do
that. Well, where do you live. Where do you live? So? Yeah? Yeah, t Sons. Can t Sons afford that? Yeah? No? I mean you know there has to be a ten dollars ticket. Yeah, if you want them in the seats, they can get a beer or a Nacho's because that's included in the price. Good luck with that. Because remember we talked about this when it started in twenty one and he said, where would you rather be in LA or San Francisco as a student
athlete or in college town? US say, I sent college town because they'll love you, and big towns we're not gonna know. You don't even know who you are. No, I don't know anymore because it's just become a big, big money fest. Yeah. And and people still in LA have the money, but are they going to spend it in college? Right? And that and that's the discussion we had where in Tucson, you're gonna spend your money on the U of A. In La, you got usc you got U c l A, you got the Lakers, you got you know,
all the all the proteins. Where's your money going to go? And look at UCLA. They're struggling big TI because who cares? Right? I mean they Yeah, I mean, nobody's going to their games. And Tucson as nice as I think it is, and you love it, you've never left, and in your roots are entrenched here. It's not a it's not a wealthy town. No, it's not. We know that. We know
that and and and that and that therein is the struggle. And that's why I think we as fans are are the ones that are losing in this because you know, there's a better chance that Arizona's going to be less competitive because the finances then more competitive because of finances. Right, if you say you know which direction is Arizona going to go, You're gonna say, God, you know, I don't know how they're going to keep up, as opposed to say, oh, yeah we got this, you know we got they'll
have they'll have the money all along, and I just don't. I don't know that they're going to ever. So somebody just texted me about back in the day, what would Sean Elliott get this now? Now? Can you imagine I would say I have a mill at least or he would leave or he could go, yeah he would leave, hell go to what Kansas? Maybe they've got the money there or or again. We talked about this with Wickery yesterday or somebody maybe this week Wickery, I mean, yeah, I
have choices, guys. Yeah, pay me now or I'm gone, Yeah, exactly. And that's and that's how and that's the way it's gonna be from now on. And that's another sad truth. I think if we had a chance to ask Caleb Love this, because he had few options, he could have gone to another school, right, finish one somewhere else and middle thirty years guy, blah blah blah, come back and get paid wherever you're gonna get paid. NBA was not an option, right, maybe the G
League was, or Europe or whatever. So you have options, but sometimes you don't have all the best options. Yeah, yeah. Or you see other you see other guys who you think you're better than, who have better options? Why him and not me? Right? And now you're better or whatever? And me? And how does that plan? How you how you do things? Not to say that students student athletes don't have conscious consciousness, but but do you think they care about what about about what's happening? Uh,
what's happening to the whole totality of it? To hold the different thing you know what I'm saying, I do, because because if you don't got it and they're getting it, how do you feel. I think a good chunk of them, a really good chunk of them, don't care. As long as they get there. That's that's what the That's what my answer would have been. Yeah, but I think, I think, but I do think there are some who are hope, you know, hoping for the best, but they still want to get there. No, yeah, no,
that's the answer. I could be wrong, you could be wrong, but I don't think so. You know, what doesn't affect them, It doesn't affect them until it does when the check said, well, sorry, we're not going to give you any more. What what the hell? What the hell? You know? And and I mean it's going to become more and more doggy dog you know, we're talking about, you know, coaches yesterday.
How many coaches who complain about the transfer portal are not complaining when a guy that they want to leave leaves and opens up, you know, opens up a spot for them to go get somebody else that can that can play. So there's two sides to all of it. And I think there's two sides of it to the players. There's some players to say, yeah, I hate this, but I'm not gonna not cash that Jack. Yeah no, no, I hear you. Why would they because it doesn't affect them
because they're getting paid. Yeah. Yeah, it's and seeing that all of that steve all of that all this time, the last ten minutes that we've been talking here, none of it's been about being on the field. Yeah, none of it's been about who do you think is going to win the Big Twelve? What are Arizona's chances? You know, what do they have to do to be You know, it's all about being competitive, But because of money and transfer, portal and all these things, it's not about do
you have a good quarterback? Do you have a good running back? Do you have a good wide receiver? You know, there's always more to the story, right, I would be curious to know just out of curiosity. Is not for anything else. If you get twenty five ads in a room,
what do they really talk about? See? This sucks? Honestly, you know that they're they're saying Publicly, they're saying all the right things, right, Yeah, we're trying hard, But in that room, they're saying what you are saying up here, you know we should ask Dave Ikey that since he's not an e FLEC direcord Dave, what's what you know? What what's the fly on the wall hearing? Because yeah, you know, it'd be interesting to see all the pe probab wouldn't tell us because he probably wants
another eighty job. But you know what I'm saying, I do know, I do know exactly what you're saying, Steve, this is crazy. He didn't sign up for this. Nobody signed up for this. Nobody signed up for this. Well, I take it back. The athletes are coming out of high school right now or signing up for this question, and their parents are signing up. Jimmy, you better go out and practice. You want to get your butte out there and catch the ground balls because you got to
make us some money. But what there's there is another layer of this, Steve. What kind of pressure are parents putting on their kids and they say, hey, my kid's really good. He you know, he's not only going to get a scholarship, he's going to make some money. Well, and what kind of pressure you know? We see the pressure already with all the club club sports, no, no, no, I want you to
repeat that that story. Uh you've said it a few times, the volleyball story where the girls and the ladies are behind behind you softball, so whatever was? Yeah, Yeah, I was. I was a club softball game. And and and my daughter is playing in this she was she was going to be a senior in we're talking but these these these players were probably sophomores and junior in high school. My daughter was the old lady of the marginal players. Yeah, well, we go to this tournament and it's her it's
their first club tournament. So I think I think we're in pressed the flag staff for Prescott. I can't tell the difference between the two. So where and and yeah, and these and these two moms are sitting behind us talking about, you know, whether the girl is going to go go to a s u or or Arizona. And they're in the game that my daughter is playing in, and I'm like, I haven't seen one player on this field.
You know, I didn't say it, but I said, I haven't seen one player in this field who can play not only at who can play not only at Arizona, but not even Pima. I said, on top of that, my daughter is better than all your girl, all the girls. My daughter is one of the best players out there and she's just playing so she can get to it into a Division II school. So you know, these parents are back there saying, oh, yeah, you know, you know a s U and and you know, and I'm like, no,
no, that's no. It was funny as hell. I wanted to I really really wanted to turn around and say, you know what, I don't know who your girls are, but they're not going to a SU in Arizona. They're not. Just get rid of that right now. Any girl who's at this age, any girl who can go to a s U or Arizona is really damn good, I said. And my daughter's better than you're. I'm probably playing for a better team, right right. Yeah, No, it's it's what the world we live in today. But I don't I
don't endy the A D S or whatever. The good old days are long gone because now you have to think, well, the thing is back in the that you wondered if they on the take, Well, no, you don't have to worry about everybody. If you're not on the take, then you're not doing your job, right everybody. Yeah, it's just you know, it's again, I'm a little depressed today after the talk with John. Well, I'll get you more depressed because we've been depressed for a long time.
I think it started or maybe realized that when the DA came on the show. It says, uh, one hundred and fifty thousand, and that's not even anything. Yeah, but competing to people who have two million, Yeah, yeah, there's some there's some women's basketball players who are getting that and more. And then that's how much you got for your whole team. How are you gonna do that, Steve, You're depressing me more. You keep you keep, you keep digging this hole and it keeps well falling in.
I have nothing to fill that hole with. Yeah, it is. It's and and again I want to I mean, as John said, we're a long way from all this being reason there's so many issues, and they're they're long, they're going to take a long time to settle, and so we're gonna be talking about this for a long time. And sure, well, unfortunately in the summertime, like now, everything else takes the back seat. And I totally agree with them. There's gonna be a lawsuit of the
title line situation, because guarantee you have girls who played. I have guys that sons that played. H and what about me? What about the girls? And you said, you said a million times they all worked just as hard as the others. The volleyball players working just as hard as the football player, right, don't they? Yeah? Yeah, and now you tell them you don't. Yeah, exactly, exactly exactly. Okay, oh man's Steve, see, you brought me down some more? How could you be
down some more? Your Dodgers lost? I can't I dug a hole you started, You brought it down at the very beginning. All right, let's get the heck out of here. We're gonna come back. Ryan's gonna be here with breaking news. Chick around
