Steve Rivera and Jake and salads. They have their Eye on the Ball on Tucson's sports stage chat Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. Hey, welcome back to Iron the Ball here Fox Sports fourteen fifty M. Steve, he's Jake. Now we have sid with some breaking news. Eye on the Ball, breaking news. All right, we'll start off the breaking news with Arizona Portal news. Today, Tokario Davis said he plans to enter the portal as well another cornerback.
Obviously, these players can come back, so I assume that they're going to be recruited once again from Arizona, but as of right now, losing a lot of depth, a cornerback and obviously tight end yesterday with a couple of departures. Possibly. Yeah. You know, it's funny how fans just grab onto any little thing that you have to make themselves feel better. Because Dona Coleman was at the game lesson right, and he was shown on the on the on the on the videos green and people say, oh, he
was at the game last night. He might be staying. I'm like, you know what, they're fans, they go to basketball. Yeah, I mean, Bronnie James was here a lot of people. USC is a big name school, A lot of guys maybe want to come out, Maybe Cali kids. Maybe they want to come out because they grew up around USC. Maybe they want to watch. Yeah, why was the zona zoom booing him? Because they're spiteful. They're the ones that said everything last year, spiteful
of what what is it done to them? Being because he's Brownny his famous. It's stupid. It's stupid because he just had a hard he just had a hard condition. The guys died and he's over here playing. Yeah, you shouldn't be booing him. You should be giving him a standy. No,
he's the son of Lebron. Who's another reason why you shouldn't. It doesn't make you know what if I'm if I was here and I was if I was Lebron and I was here, I'm going up into the seats, I'm gonna I'm gonna want somebody's ass, and I'm gonna want it right now. It's it's it's kids today, I mean, well, and we live with I don't know if this would happen we twenty if this would happen twenty year thirty years ago, when we were social media has made these stars out
of people and students, following and influencers. And I've met you this before. I don't know. I'll ask you to kid any of these influencers influence you. No, not personally. No, No, are you buying sprite because some guy Selena Gomez influenced me to watch SES? That's kind of kind of creepy. Put you to what I'm saying, Yeah, you have this TikTok who cares? Man if they're making money off of but they are Internet. Yeah, I get it, I get it, but I would never
It never came to my mind. I know a lot of people that have a lot of girls that I grew up with that have jumped into that, and I just I never thought about doing. I just you're gonna have to give me a lesson on how they make money. It's just they through the videos. They get sponsors and okay, it's about somebody would want you did
the dance video? You did you and your kid? Right? Yeah, they never got up on Twitter though, on Facebook, that only got up on the know people don't people aren't sponsoring those like no, no, don't do that, don't do that? Okay, what else? So I don't know if you guys saw a Scooby right did make a visit this morning to Brent Brennan, So that's big. You know, getting the support early on from from alumni and former players will be huge. And with the Boosters,
seems like the boosters are will be much happy. I know they wanted a guy that was much more connected to Tucson, So we'll see how how it goes. But I think Brent Brennan is a people's person. You know, so far, so good, so so we were there at the press cummings. How happy skill ten? Do you think Kiky was announcing him yesterday and a half given there, given that he wanted to hire him originally, he
was giddy. He clear. Staying on the topic of Arizona football, t MAC is holding a stuff the Bus event tomorrow Row from six am to six pm for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, and this is more directed to the fans that are complaining about people leaving. If you want people to stay and go out to stuff like this and show support. You know, it's it's easy to say stuff when kids leave, But were you all in for these kids? Were you supporting all these kids? Like you wanted them
or that's that's the difficult thing. Jay, What are you willing to do? What are you willing to do? And how much or even emotional like I said, emotional or financial support? Right, yeah, So this is a chance for those fans that want team to say, go out, go do something. Yeah, go do something. Staying on Arizona football again with the mom Williams visiting Washington this weekend, would not be surprised if he heads over. But Dorman did stay. He came back out of the portal.
I don't know if he goes. Yeah, so he's he's staying, and so is brand and Phelps the wide receiver. We haven't heard what will HiT's gonna do right from South Point now, but he is now in the portal officially, so yeah. So it's gonna be interesting to see with only certain schools having players in the portal right now. It's not like before where it's open. It's obviously a closed session now when a coach leaves, these players
enter. So right now there's only certain aount of schools losing players. We'll see obvious. See, we're not the only school that's gonna take a hit, you know, Washington will take. Washington's gonna capitalize on this as well, that offensive side of the ball for Washington. Yeah, so which doesn't bode well for Arizona because that's what they have. Yeah, exactly, yep. So this is gonna be I think the next three days or so, we're gonna be huge. We'll find out a lot when it comes to that.
So they technically have thirty days, so they got some time. We'll see what happens. But brand Brannan is gonna have a chance. That's the biggest thing. He's gonna have a chance. So we'll see. Uh. Staying with the former Arizona player, Jordan McLoud is transferring to to Auburn. Did you see that last year enlisting yourself for him? He had He was a James Madison. James Madison had a pretty good year, except they didn't They didn't cover their bowl games. I think somebody had him Parley dead him
there. It's dead to moving into the NFL stuff, we got several coaches interviewed for jobs. David Shaw interviewed with the Chargers, and Mike Rayville. Rabel was reported to be in l a as well for an interview with them. So Chargers are they're going through it right now. We'll see what they come up with. But this is a good I think this is probably the best team to go for the best opening. Yep, they've got the best opening for sure. But the Falcons one, I can't So. Bill Belichick
is reported to have a second interview scheduled for this weekend. I don't know. We were having a funny conversation about this on on on the text chat today. What what questions do you ask Bill Belichick in a job interview? Well, I said, like I said, it's the other way around. You ask you ask him. How did how you're looking at I'm looking at your resume? How did your experience at the New England Patriots? Uh? Prepare you for doing this job? And where do you see yourself in time
of your Yeah? Yeah, exactly right. I have to I feel like this interview is more of the Falcons. We've talked about trying to sell why he should be there. We have we have a little personality survey. We want you to feel out. I know what kind of a guy the NFL people do. Uh uh, it's it's that weird one, yeah, that they do at the combine you know, I mean what you didn't even shouldn't even call it an interview. See they're having a visit with him or something
like that, because it's certainly not an interview. I mean again, you're you know, you're some you know, young buck of a of a of a GM somewhere, and you're gonna say, you're gonna bring in Bill Belichick and you're gonna ask him questions. What are you gonna do? What are you gonna ask him? I yeah, that that interview is. I would be more nervous if I was the person interviewing him, exactly, exactly, all right. Staying with the NFL, Mike McCarthy's quote was to buy into
us when he when it was said that he's returning to the Cowboys. So do you think Cowboy fans are going to buy into them? No? I don't think No. I don't know why they kept him. Well, I mean, who are you gonna get? Is that? Maybe? Yeah? I mean it's not like you guys, a terrible coach. They just had a crap ass game and you know in this last game, yeah, you know, and and who whose fault was that? I know, I know. Mike McCarthy didn't throw any of those pick sixes. Right, So I
don't know, man, I don't know. He's won a super Bowl. It's not he's a horrible coach. Yeah, but but again that was many years ago, but many years ago. But again, you know, yeah, who are you going to get? Did you? Uh? Are you? Do? You have the Chicago Bears? One? No? I don't do you want to mention? Yeah, you see Cliff Kingsbury is allegedly in not for the head coaching job, for offensive coordinator, you know, because you know they've got the first pick, so they can get your Caleb Williams
and you know if he goes over there. But I'm like, Okay, Caleb Williams didn't look that good to me last year. Why would you bring his offensive coordinator? I guess the only connection would be the USC. They're both at USC. He was working at USC last year. But yeah, that's that's the point. He was and he was even on the field coaching And how did that go? Yeah? And I mean Williams at first and
even want to go to the Bears. So now you want to go to the Bears just because because one of your coaches, that's what they're trying to do because what he's trying to do, Yeah, well your assistant, Come on, I guess that's why the Bears aren't the Bears, right, Yeah, well, if you got Pat Finley over here, that's camp. What hell's going on? It's too chaotic because they've gone through some major stuff with
the coaches, letting go coaches. I mean, they mystery. They have a number one draft pick, you know, already in the in uh uh yeah, but that's his name Fields, Yeah, justin Fields. Yeah. I feel like that's not that big of an upgrade from Fields. Right now, Field is playing, He's playing better, He's progressive one. I was never sold on Caleb Williams even even well, I was never sold on you. No, I agree with you. This year kind of like exposed a
few things. And is he going to be able to play? It's not going to be sunny southern California weather. You're gonna be playing in Lambeau. You're gonna be playing in Chicago if you make the playoffs, maybe some snow. I mean it's I mean, for me, I feel like Fields right now you have to be contempted. Did you see you see the reporter who asked, yeah, the Tampa Bay Con. How are you going to adjust
to? Yeah, the weather in Detroit. He goes, uh, we play indoors, right, right, So Justin and all we did that yesterday morning for some reason. I was up and they brought the clip and they showed it blah blah bah and they listened to it. And I'm thinking that had to be and just you know this too, given your positions and other positions in other places that I'm thinking there was a news reporter, an early news reporter, who doesn't know anything, but had to do a sidebar about
the about the weather. Didn't look and didn't know, and asked that question because a beat guy knows a guy who knows football nose. So you had, you know, some young reporter who doesn't know, who doesn't know, you know, because she was doing the sidebar on the weather ye and asked this question. But that was a great response. But twenty seconds to get off, I wanted to get your guys opinion on the Texas coach and the way that it orange down. So UCF after the game did orange down after
they they up said Texas, that was very visible. It did not go well as the Texas coach took it personally there as they were going through the how do you prevent it? Courcht you win, win the game, you do, and and I like what I like what they had to say on Damn Patrick this morning. They said, if you don't want to people to
be doing horns down, don't do horns up right. True, if you're going to be doing that, we'll expect people to do, you know, so go go bite yourself, you know, because because he has their forks the same thing. I don't do that. I mean, I don't really care, but you know, fans do students do Like, Okay, if you're going to do this and you lose, somebody's going to do that and
deal with it. All's fair in loving games. And unfortunately, Brunny, I'm like they really I was in there and it was it was without a doubt. Every time he got the ball, Yeah, every time you touched the they were locked in. They had to be locked in on the game because every time we got the ball to the very end, they were every time you touched the ball, they were still like, what are we doing in this? Even on the inbound when he would be in bounding the ball.
Welcome to our world, Jay, oh man, I can't wait to get off the lawn. Serious, I mean I was. I did not partake in that, but yeah, sure I didn't a liar fire. I was just like because I was asking the my roommate that was with me, I said, what do you think is going to happen? Is he gonna get more cheers went when he's announced? Or or booze? And obviously it was booze. Yeah, yeah, silly? Sure what else you have?
We have the three things we didn't talk about you Yeah, with the Hall of Fame guys, right, well, the Ring of Honor, the basketball Ring of Honor. Three players were announced yesterday. Christian Coloco because he won a defensive Player of the Year awards, Ben Mathern because he was a was he a player year in the conference? And Kenny Lofton because of his amount of tens in pro sports so tens didn't have to be in the sport he played. Yeah, yeah, well and then yesterday, did you who pushed
on the hit it withal he gets cut you? Oh yeah, yeah, but you got yeah yesterday? Yeah, they waved him yesterday. Hey man, life in the pro life, man, it's it is. It's a tough you're picked. Yeah right, no, no, well you look look from last year. Kicked our asses or kicked our asses? Guy? Oh the league. He's back home, Coloco, same kind of situation now was in in two and a half years. Two and a half years. Uh dayal and Terry, who knows what's up with him? He's kind of back
and forth from the G league. This this is the business man, This is a real world. I'd stay in school for you for another five years. Yeah, so I don't get waived out there. It's a tough world here, man, jungle. Let's take our next break. We're gonna be back. Clarence Farmer, Yeah, running back at Arizona in the early two thousands. Uh, just got to pick his brain how he's followed Aarazon football and all that stuff and pretty things and what's going on now? So I
want to see how how was it playing for back? Yes, you guess you're gonna ask him that. What does he see? Ask? He's far away, You can't hit me. He's better brad shape. Steve Rivera and Jacin saliz they have their eye on the ball on Tucson's sports stage yet five Sports fourteen fifteen. So welcome back to it on the iHeartRadio wapp Hey, welcome back to on the here on short twenteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, he's Jiginsas Now on the phone, we have Clarence Farmer, former U of A running back. How are you, Clarence doing
pretty good? Great? Pretty good? Great to have you on the show. We wanted to. We always like to have ex players on the show talk about their past and and we saw that you played for or played back at the time when Brent Brennan was the GA? Was it ga? How was that? How were those times? You know, it's crazy I was
when he got the job. I had some footage from when I first got in the U of A my freshman year, and uh, I have footage actually of Brett Brendan and coach Tomy and and some games that we had and I active Brett Bret, I played with his brother Brett. He was the receiver. But overall, to talk about him, man, he was a He was a pretty good guy, very very in tune of what he was, what he was doing at the GA, and and uh, looking not everything is paying off for him. So you know, I give him,
I give him a uh the nods. Yeah, but what if we recalling then, you know, I know it was long ago and you know, guy goes he's fifty years old now, right, so he's not the guy that you know you knew back then. But you know what, but people are who they are who they are. What is it about him that you think, uh put him on a path that he ultimately wound up here as a as a head coach. Family guy, family, family oriented. That's the first thing to go to come to mind when I think about the Brandan's
period. You know, they are a family that is very rich with you and you know, the the the the way that he carried itself was very it was very pleasant to say the least of that. If that comes off, yeah, yeah, it's pleasant. So I'm so right now looking at the past. You right now, he's fifty years old who he was back then in the way he is now. You know, there's definitely a lot
of growth and maturity and becoming the coach now. But you know, first experience that I had with him, and you know it was very very very good, very pleasant superman. So since you left him, a lot of things have happened, right you you been at a weird time. Uh we there was Macovic, there was Stoops, there was Winds, Rod Someling, uh Fish. Did you keep in contact with anybody? And did you follow
the program believe it or not? You know, I followed the program from Afar, but you know, uh, interestingly, Uh, I started off the coach told me, of course, well, Brennan, that started as g A and uh that year after he left, then Mackovic came in, and Mackovic left and Hankowis came in. Then Stoop came in. I met Stoops before he actually got the job, and when he came in, and after coach Stope, they had I believe it was rich rod Rigus and then
somebing so uh, and then from Somembling to Finch. My high school coach was under under Somembling, he played, he's a he's a coach there. But you know, it's just been a lot of it's just a lot of transition over the last twenty years. And I came back to UV in two thousand and seven to seven to complete my degree, or to finished my degree rather, So you know, I came back when coach Stops was there, Gronkowski was there, and a number of the other guys that were there that
did some things. So you know, I was there and seeing the transition. But you know, being a Wildcat is more than the coaches. It's it's you know, life goes on, but you definitely want to see your program going in the right in the right direction. So to say where we are now and given them the history of the coaches that we had then, I mean, it's a good family guy, it's a doctor, it's a good guy for the program. In my opinion, it's somebody who who can
do I believe good things for the university. In my honest opinion, the guys here at Arizona and now they're going through a transition you know, from a coach that by all accounts, you know, everybody loved. You know, you went through that same thing, right, Victomy is gone, you got Makovic and we can make comments about Macavic and how that whole thing turned out, but you went through a period of time, you know, this transition where you had to change coaches. Yeah, Nick, And what was
that like and how hard was that it was? It was believe it or not. You know, it's it's very it's crazy because the world that these guys are in right now and the way that they have to do things and compete with all of these changes at the at the collegiate level. Man, it really balls back down the basics. Uh, you know, you have to complete what you start. In my opinion, Uh, you can be a good athlete and go to a school, it's an opportunity. Yeah,
you can take the risk of going somewhere else. But uh, the person that followed through, in my opinion, Uh, is a person that's that that that displays a lot of character and resilience. You know, we if we talk about being resilient, if that's one of our coaching points, which a lot of coaches use, Dictomy use that a lot, be resilient. Uh. You know, it's it's one of those characteristics that uh you have to display and and uh. But to answer your question, yeah, a
lot of it's difficult. It's difficult. So you don't know what the future is, you don't know what's going to happen, you don't know who's coming in. But the one consistent uh factor with all that is you what do you display? What do you bring to the table as a player? Who you base your performance on? What coach come in? You know, at the end of the day, you know, the game is pretty simple. It's office and defense uh and throwing touchdowns uh and and and hitting and tackling.
Those are the basic fundamentals of the game. Uh. And and if you're a good quality player, you'll make a way, you'll find a way to to to lead and to shine. And I think that's what's going to separate or that's what's gonna be the biggest factor in my opinion of guys that are coming into college now and in the future, because you know, anybody can come to university and say, man, this coach is leaving, I
want to go somewhere else, and you have to start all over. But you know, I definitely look at it as you know, if I wanted to go somewhere, there's a reason why I wanted to go there. And when I go somewhere as that's that's that's where I want to finish. Uh. So you know, it's just a mindset, and I don't know if the younger generation is being taught and trained like that, but it's a certain grit, uh about an athlete or to an athlete who want whatever they start,
they definitely want to finish and finish on a good note. So yeah, that's that's my little two sits on it. I don't know if I answered the question, but process, that's the bottom line. So you're in Houston, obviously big twelfth country, But I wanted to talk to you about success Arizon has We talk about this all the time because Jay's been here a long time. I've been here a long time. Arizona football has had it
hasn't been able to sustain the success. Uh, you know, they win, and then you really well, and then they don't win, and then they win, and then they don't win. What did you think of this last year and maybe the future of the success because it seems like they just need a kickstart where they can continue that success. It just doesn't happen. Well. Yeah, you know, success is definitely uh determined by the guys
that are on the field. I mean, the coaches play a huge part of it, and the hardest thing to do is is to not wrap your mind around all of the stuff that's going on. Uh, that's one of the biggest deals. I mean, if you're a guy that's a freshman that's coming in or a sophomore that's coming in and you didn't getting plenty in time and you have the opportunity to prove yourself from this new regime, then do
that. I mean, it don't matter which school you go to, if you if you decide to transfer to some and Wales, you still have to put your best foot forward and then you have to deal with new guys coming in. So I think, uh, uh, it's it's a situation where uh you just you just have to do your best, man, you really do. You have to do your best, and you have to quiet all the noise and and and kind of be selfish and make it about you and
make it a progressive thing every year in order to get better. But for you of aid, you know, to bring somebody back has been a port of of UH, the U of A history. I think they understand with the value of what or of what U of A is trying to put out in its athletes. And I think that's something that you can you can you
can build off of. But I really think the guys that have have put into work last year and went and had a ten win season, of the guys that are going to come back and continue that, continue that momentum. It's a young group, it's a young class, and if they stick together, then they'll realize that, you know, being a Wildcat is something that you offer life and and UH you you you make the team. You you make the determination if the team is going to win and lose, because you
know what you have on your team. And so working together with the coach, you know, you guys actually have a bright horizon being in a new going to a new conference, having a young group of kids, having a brand new coach. I mean you could be positively optimistic if you like, and and you know what, where you go from MADS is your future and having a taste of success. Uh, it's definitely u uh, it's definitely uh something that will make you want to go out the next year and and
teatn be better than you were. So yeah, So Clarence, we're talking to Clarence Farmer. Farmer Arizona running back. You know, you were here at a time that was you know, it was tough, and no doubt about it, but you know what, and then you know you thought enough of the u of a to come back and get your degree. You know, how, how did you when you look back on your experience at Arizona? What what are the things that you think of? What? You know?
What did you like about the place where? You know? Why did you come back and do that? I love it. It was a lot that I liked about Tucson was different in the two thousands coming in as opposed to what it is now. I enjoyed. You know. The biggest thing was just the transition from high school to college. Uh. That was a
big deal. You know, being in the region that I've never been in before, having to be in the region that I haven't been in for four years, but also taking a skill and a talent and using that as your platform to build off of. And you know, with that mindset that I was telling you earlier about being one of those guys who want to complete what you start, that was the reason why I stayed at you. I had different running back coaches, I had different head coaches, and not only guy
when I say I mean the team, the whole team. We had different head coaches and stuff. So there's a lot of turbulence that we went through. But throughout all of that, you have to find something in you that makes you want to finish. Now in the landscape of well with these guys are now, I don't know if it's I don't know if that's the mindset that they have. The one and done mindset is kind of like sinking in. But you know, my a cook milling is better than microwave then any
day. So you know, if you put time into what you're doing, then hey man, you worth it. You're worth your decision, You worth where you're going, and and and it, and it may prove to be advantageous to complete where you uh uh, to complete where you are. But if it's about the money, hey man, get kids to gonna go get the money. Man. You know, I can't I can't be I can't. I can't be caught up in my old ways of saying stay here man. You know these guys are really trying to make a living and use me
that uh, the leverage, the opportunity they have. So you know, it's just a new climate. It's just a new climate. So at u of a, like I said, it was just like it was a number of things. It was the friends, it was the geographic location. It was just it was a lot different than being in the South. Uh Uh that I liked about the us A teachers, friends, professors. I mean, it was just a number of things. So I can't really just say one thing and one breath what it was that that I like about you.
So I'm hoping you can. I hope you can answer this one. How was it playing for Macovic? I was our play. I was my play for Macavick. Mcavick was another coach, believe it or not. I'm not gonna I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna get on here in bad Mouth to guy. Uh, he definitely knew more about football from a political standpoint than I did. I was just a young kid who had a whole lot of talent who want to do as much as he can with the opportunity while he
was there. So that's why I played baseball. Everybody know football, but believe it or not, I got drafted in baseball from the UMV and didn't even get drafted in football. So it's it's a number of things that you know that that that that that lines up on what I'm saying. Yeah, you had a brand new coach come in, but that was the same year that I led the conference in Russia and was a way for all Americans. So it's not the coaches. That's that's the point that I'm driving now.
It's not the coach. It's it's who you and what you want to perform and become. That is the end result of what you're gonna get out of that. So you know, when I came to school, I intended to do better than the next year that that I that I played, and that's that's that's what I set out to do and that's what I believed I accomplished
in those years that I was there. But playing for Macavic. In my opinion, I've had hardball, I had hard noise coaches in Texas, so it wasn't nothing new to me. But you know, the political side of it was what was new to me, and UH, that was a battle that I just wasn't ready for. UH, But it didn't stop me from completing the objectives that I had to complete when I came to Arizona, which
was be the best UH student athlete that I could. And I believe I accomplished that by overcoming the obstacles of getting kicked off the team, getting released by the university, and then not being accepted coming back when I did want to come back, and throughout all of that still persevering to getting my degree
of fishing up school. That's what I can take away from the whole experience from the U of A. That will never that will never hold me back, hold me down, regardless of what obstacle you putting from me, Coach Mackovic, the time that I stayed away from the school, or any other negative connotation that comes along with U of A and my relation UH to the school. So you know, doing your best and sticking it and and and finishing is is my my, my mission, my model so complete what you
start, I don't even remember you all that. I don't remember half of that. So now what they up to? What are you up to these days? Uh? Living, living, enjoying life, looking at the perspective of of life from uh just being a dad. Man. I was a day when I say being a dad, being a parent man. You know, Uh, it's just he's a different uh, dimensions of life that I'm living right now because I'm actually observing I mean, uh, enjoying. Uh.
I do have a love for sports. I still love football, I love baseball, I love track and field, I love basketball, I love all those sports. But it's it's more of a I feel like I'm the coach now. You know. I have children and I definitely try to, you know, impute these values in them about life because at the end of the day, man, this this this sports life is brief, especially when you get to college. You know, you may play, you may not play, you may go to the next level, you may not go to
the next level, but you know who you are as a person. Uh, You're definitely not the finished product in college. You know, that's just really that's really where the journey start. It's who you're going to become over the years that that that really speak volumes of which you're actually trying to become. So you know, that's just my little take on it. Okay, well, Clarence, I appreciate you coming on. Fantastic, Thank you,
Clariens appreciated. I hope you're doing well. Thank you all right, Clarence. Clarence Farmer thoughtful guy, Yeah, yeah, toughtful guy. Yeah. Some I guess you know when he said I didn't think of that stuff. I remember. Yeah, you know he had some issues with you know during that that period of time, and you know it was off the team, back on the team, and remember what he was a good player and that
you didn't want to tackle. No, no, he was Jonah told me before Jona Coma was Joone Coe. Yeah yeah, no, good stuff. Okay. And the baseball stuff I can't remember that either. Yeah. Again he brought you know, that's the thing that Clayence Farmer is one of those guys that you know, he was a big athlete. Yeah, he was a big part of things. But yeah, you forgot all the because he he came out of time that people kept kind of like yeah, yeah, yeah, one again. Right, Okay, I get it all right,

Talked to Clarence. I hadn't seen him in forever, talked to him forever. We skipped over this guy from the tight end from Miami who's got his ninth year of eligibility of perform Yeah, twenty six years old. Gotta have at least two kids, right, Doesn't there come a time that you want to stop playing with kids? Right? Yeah? I feel like it's it's just it feels wrong. University of Miami, Yeah, football, Yeah, Miami, Florida. Yeah, nine years, nine years be his ninth year.
Yeah, he's had a bunch of injuries and stuff like that. So missed some years, but then you had the COVID year, a medical red shirt, and then a regular red shirt, and and it adds up to he's gonna be this is gonna be his ninth season of college. How long were you in college? Five? Six, seven, no? Nine? I had a friend who took him nine years to get what was he studying everything? Apparently? I mean, why didn't this guy become a jay at some point? Like, I don't know, probably knows a lot of stuff.
He's been through a few coaches. Yeah, you might talk about the locker room. Man. You know, an eighteen year old kid comes in there and it's like I could be your father. Yeah, well, it was kind of like remember Biby, Well back in the day when they were jumping early Bibby was one of the first guys two years in and you know he was nineteen, yeah, and going into the NBA, and is what's
the how are you gonna hang out? He had an entourage obviously, right, but you remember that when you were the older when you were the older guys, you know, where do you go because you can't go to you can't go to the bars out You're gonna hang out with those guys and go out and you do the things that they do strip clubs or whatever you know
they go do they do that? Yeah, yes, okay, I didn't know that the Miami especially, I guess, yeah, Miami, And I think I think like I think like the country's like most popular strip club is actually in Atlanta. Yeah, you know, because there's been a bunch of guys, primarily NBA players, have gotten into issues at some place. I don't even know how did you know this? Just get I read I've never been to Atlanta, just so you know. Oh yeah, yeah, it's
a great place. Great place. Yeah, finally I've had a final fours there. Yeah right, yeah, okay, anybody want to call five two, four, one, six seventy? Uh sorry, we digressed from so what else a basketball game? We can talk about that again. Oh you know what another guy we didn't talk about? Jay was was not balla was Boswell still kind of not shooting? Yeah, I mean, well, he comes out, he hits a shot, He hits a shot right at the
start of the at the game, but then kind of disappeared again. Yeah, remember I can't remember his Yeah, the second one, that's the third one we're doing here. We're like the three Stooges. Wise guy. There's a wise guy that he came out, like you said, he hit the shot and then I think he went four for whatever it was. I can't four for twelve maybe, but not playing like the guy from November. And he didn't start the second half and he didn't start and and Tommy said it
wasn't about him. Uh JB as you called him, had been playing well, has been playing well and offered us some spark. It's just collect it's a collective effort that they're not playing up far. It's funny. I'm reading some internet stuff on my story and says, yeah, they're not they're not doing what they're supposed to be doing, or that what's supposed what they had been doing. They had been there. They're not the November December team. Yeah, and that's that's true, you know, but yes, plenty of
time to get it get together. They're not going to be running into the uh uh you know any any you know killer teams coming up in the PAC twelve. Let's take this call. You're on the air and on them all. Yeah. I wanted to first congratulate uh Clarence Farmer on his journey. It was a good story. Yeah, it was. Yeah, it was you know, it's good to hear and he sounds like he's just doing great over there. Yeah. Now my question, yeah, who do you think
will have the worst uh? And not to be negative, but the saddest exit story from you of a football coaching history Larry Smith leaving in the middle of the night without saying anything, or Jed Fish with us three minutes and the U the U sad video he hosted. You know, I as as somebody who's been here, I think you're hanging on Larry because people loved him.
He was here a while. You know, he was successful. He he you know, he really continues to be credited with being the guy that got you know, that got the program, uh, you know to a to a higher level, you know, and then he left. So I to me and from a if you're saying what's the saddest I think it was that one. You know, there were a lot of people were really mad
about that. But a lot of people were really sad about that because he was he He's very well liked and continue to be well like once the USC thing wore off after a few years. Yeah, well it took me a long time to get over then leaving in the middle of the night. Yeah, that he did. But you know, listening to Glenn Howell and some of the old players, they love him, and I'm sure the yeah,
the newt the players now will love Jedfish. And you know, we should have known with all his fourteen fifteen that he'd be bouncing sooner or later. And I just want to say, I'm happy for Brent Brennan and I think the I think our team's moving forward. Yeah. Let me ask you this. Let me ask you if you remember this, because remember Arizona was in the Aloha Bowl, and then you know has been chronicled he didn't come all the way home with the team, He got dropped off in La took the
job. Then like the next week or two weeks later, he's coaching in the Hula Bowl, that All Star game, and he's got u a sea gear on, and that really made people mad. Do you remember that? Do you remember seeing that or do you have any recollection of that? You know, I don't remember the detail of that, but I mean at all. I mean that's a foreshadow for sure. Yeah, but I remember everybody
was upset that show. But aftermath, yeah, yeah, and I remember people, and I remember people being really upset because there was a picture if I called, there was a picture in the paper and Larry is in USC gear and right next to him is an Arizona player that was on the team that was on the I can't remember who it was. It would had to have been it was eighty six. I don't know who it was, John Horton or one of those guys. I don't know, but I just remember
that and that stung too. I remember that one stinging as well. So all right, thank you for calling me. Do you appreciate it? I don't. I don't want to live in the negative. Yeah, we're in a positive space now, and hope some of the players stay. And if they do, I think they'll they'll have a great experience. I agree with you. If you can hold it together, we can still have a good
season. The last thing I want to throw out is if these top players go and they get more nil money or whatever I mean with For example, Noah Fafida and all his family who come and travel to the games, he can prop they can probably travel up to the rainy Seattle and watch the games up there. But it seems like it would be an advantage for a lot of the so called juice players to be able to and their families to still attend somewhat locally. Well, I hope that's something that there's is a factor
right now. Well, like the po thing with his death, always here driving in the car, coming down, he's gone. Well now he's gone gone, he's jumped in the portal. All right, we do appreciate the call, thanks bunch. All right, so let me ask you something. I love Tucson. I've been here a long time. I never really wanted
to leave. But I'm gonna throw this question saying, did the Smith thing hurt partially because to Soldan's back in the day forty years ago, felt that they weren't good enough where it was a point where you could do that here you know, we're not good enough. No, it wasn't that, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, I know exactly what you're saying. I know. I think it was more about the we're so good? Why it's
so good here? Why would you ever want to leave? Yeah, there was that well yeah, that's still kind of the yeah, but it's kind of like, why would you leave this place. It's it's it's beautiful. It's beautiful. It's a cool place, you know. And I remember the
the next year. I remember Arizona played up there the next year. So the first time they had faced Larry Smith was the year in UH in l A. And you know, I guess it probably Magruder uh covering the Jack McGruder covering that team, and he destroyed, you know, it did the story with on Larry and talk and lay talked about how how much he had to get used to living in LA And the one point that stuck with me is how you know he would drive to he would drive himself to work right
like you could do here, and it would take him forever. So he eventually ended up hiring a driver so that he could do work on the way into work and that and then how he really hated it. But you know what got lost during all that at that particular time was the whole deal about contracts in the state of Arizona. It was one year, the state laws had one year counture and he and us he gave Hi a five year deal. So uh, you know, in the end, you don't and again
it was usc you don't blame him for leaving. It was one of those things just people felt, you know, thought he was dug in here and then he was going to be here twenty years and then he took the USC job. Didn't part of the story. And I don't want to, but I don't want to get this wrong, and you tell me if I'm wrong. Didn't he flip them? He? Oh, he flipped off the fans the year before eighty five flipped off. Oh oh, then he's came back
for that finally year. Yeah. Yeah. The eighty five thing was what happened was they were playing U c l A here and they were in the hunt for for a uh you know, to win the conference, and they got beat and and uh you know, fans boot him, and he threw the finger at the fans. Then the next week they come and they beat Oregon and get into the Sun Bowl, and you're back, yeah, you're back in love with him. And it was the first time here, you know, Arizona had gone to a bowl game since uh, the fest to
bow with Tony Mason in seventy nine. But he yeah, he's you know, he threw the finger at the fans because they were booing the hell out of him, and yeah, this should have been booing him. He had, he had really good you know, Brownie. And then and then he beat a s U again. You know, you know he didn't lose to a s U after after the eighty one season. You know, you want to you want to beat him in eighty two, eighty three, eighty four, eighty five, and eighty six. So I don't think it was that
we didn't that you weren't adequate, We weren't adequate. It was that this is a great place. You know, I'm insulted that you would leave. That's what it was. I get that because I saw that with when Sean was going to get take a job where Maryland or whatever, and someone one of my friends, and we would know, why would you leave Tucson. Well, you're gonna pay a lot of money to go live somewhere else. Yeah, that's affordable with four or five million dollars, right, you know,
that's what it was. And you know, okay, and then Dick Tommy came here and they ran him out. Geez. Yeah, well you fickle fans, we're a bunch of butt heads. Yes, yes, you really are. All right, good show, good stuff, Thank you, Clarence Farmer for being here. Dave Rubio, hope you're enjoying your retirement and coaching those little kids in volleyball. And tomorrow we've got Jake Fisher will get his take on on all that's developed over the last couple of weeks, and
Yogi Roth from a Pac twelve Networks. He's been high on Bret Brendan, so we'll see what he's got to say about the higher here at Arizona. So be sure to come back tomorrow
