This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen to fifteen powered by Nova Insurance Services and Sure your most Prized Possession. It's katz R two SA at iHeartRadio Station. Hey, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to Iron the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Roberta. He's jagon Zowis. Got our guys sit in today for the first We got them all day right, Hey, tomorrow. We have a a lot of stuff going on today, a lot of things going on. We

have a good show again for Super Bowl talking yep. Joe tofoyl. Joe Tafoya played in the five o six Super Bowl the Seahawks. He was with the Seahawks and they played nothing. Yeah, the Seahawks and they lost to the Steelers five twenty one to ten. That was the game. Heinz Ward had a big game. Uh, one of a few that that the Steelers won during that period of time. Five. I'm looking it up right now. I had it sitting on my screen all day. Uh. Well the

game was in six, so it was after the five season. Said a long time ago. No, No, I'm trying to make a point, it's uh, seventeen years ago. Eighteen years ago, cowboys have been gone out. Yeah, almost thirty. Well, look, Joe Tofoy is what forty nine years old now, so uh something like that. Forty nine So he was thirty, he's forty five. He's forty thirty years ago, thirty years old, he's forty five right now. It'd be good guy on the show. Before he's been on the show. He came on, think,

came on just after. It was during during the hiring of Jetfish when they had the team pow wow and stuff. Actually they had a pow wow this week. I saw thinking la night. I think we didn't get invited. We'll see what do we have to add to it, so we'll see if he was part of it. Got maybe let me get a live I'm looking at Joe to Foy's birthday on Wikipedia. He was born after I graduated from high school. Now he's an old guy coming back to talk about to to

your point, you get it old quickly. Yeah, I found out this morning. Yeah, did you were on that thread? Yeah? Stevid lined up guests and I had forgotten. Yeah I remember, Yeah, Yeah, this is what we just talked about. So so Joel come on again. He was in the Super Bowl. Uh what number is that? I don't but I don't know the number forty something, but it was it was back in in the in two thousand and six. It was placed. It was

following in the two thousand and five season. Okay, So in the second hour, in the second hour, doctor Kevin Lehman is going to come in. He's actually gonna come into the studio and have a chat with us about whatever, you know, the many issues facing athletes and kids and things that they're going through, and you know, maybe have a little, uh, have a little lecture for our parents who seem to be idiots so often of so much of the time when it comes to their kids. And that has

been just getting more escalated. Yeah, and we'll see, you know, we'll see. I mean, is he seeing you know, more of an escalation. There's more on their minds. You got younger kids, high school kids now looking at signing you know, contracts and endorsements and things like that, and how much pressure is that putting on these kids? Sure? Helicopter cop helicopter parents, Yeah, involved even more now than ever. So if you're a parent, with kids, or a parent who had kids, or

your grandkids are starting to play sports and stuff. You might want to sit in on this one and maybe get a few, uh a few pointers on. You know what things are like out there today, and you know, kids are different from when you and I were growing up, right, It's like you know, you know, you fall down, you hurt yourself, and your dad would say, rub some dirt on it and get your butt up and get back in there. But now it's now, it's a whole lot different. Can I get a four O one k for you? So?

Kevin Lehman will join us in the second segment of the second hour and we will have we'll touch for us. He's a big Buffalo guy, Buffalo bills. Go ask him about his bills and how they Yeah, they didn't do it again. Yeah, okay, I'll see if he leaves the room upset right away. A lot of stuff going on. I'm sure you've got a lot of freaky news. There's something going on in the football program, which is not a surprise, but just I'm so wondering about other people.

Uh So, A lot of thing going on with the program. Basketball game tonight, six o'clock at home, just in time to see yeah six yeah right in Utah five and a half. Utah, they're five and a half favorites. I wouldn't touch that game. Have a question for you, all right, three bets, your choice at three bets, Let's say I don't have to pick all three. No, No, let's say let's say that.

Let's say that all I don't know if you think that the odds are different for all three of them, or if you' one of them is an even money bet that Arizona sweeps, that Arizona splits, or Arizona gets swept. Do you have numbers? Are there is the right answer. No, I know I don't have any numbers. I'm making this up. I'm asking what I mean what okay? I think? I think I think more The most likely scenario, or the one that would have the lowest odds, would

probably be split, a split split. Let's say let's say a split is minus one ten okay, a standard even money bet. And and let's say a sweep on either side is plus one hundred even money. You know, one hundred plus one hundred or well, I guess that's almost the saying yeah, yes, so no, okay, let's say let's say let's say one twenty two to one makee worth for the sweep? Yeah? One two to one? Okay, so either okay, the sweeps are two to one and

the and the the split is even money. What are you putting your money to sweep? Which one? The two win two win? Two? Yeah? Which knowing that I'm throwing away my money, but if I get my money, I hit, I hit. So you like them it's because you like the number, like okay, So let's say you guys just put Let's say you guys just put ten thousand dollars on either one and the thing drops to one fifty, you know, one and a half to one. No, no, no, no to one, right, I'd go to sweep.

I go to then if that was the case at the beginning, I would go split split one fifty or whatever it is, anything one fifty below, because I mean, come on, history, I'll tell you that what he hasn't lost two games in a row. He hasn't lost two games in a row. But the road has been very miserable to these guys, and these and this is these are the toughest road games are going to have. Sure in the pac twelve all year long, even I mean they still got

to go to the LA schools. But this is those games tougher than these is tough. Yeah, this, I mean they're both twelve and oh at home? Right? Can you talk? And Colorado want you to come into their place? Colorado was hardly at full strength the last time they were here, got their butt beat badly. They want to they're going to get back. That's Saturday, right, and then tonight you talk not bad? Yeah, yep, yep, Okay, I got another one for you. Then

what are you doing? No, I'm just at these are just no no, no, no. So where are you going with that? With that, I would bet the split? Yeah, I bet. Yeah, I'm not going to take two to one on either one. I'm taking this spoke. Yeah, I don't think they're gonna get swept, but I don't think I also, I don't think they're gonna seeps. All right, So if you had to bet on one or the other, if there, if you know they're gonna lose a game, which one are they losing tonight or Saturday?

That's a good question I would take. I would take they win tonight and lose to Saturday. Okay, yeah, yeah, I have to see the circumstances of the games because that that's important. Yeah, you say issues at Colorado, I would say tonight and then win on Saturday on the split. So I just say, no, you said the opposite, you said, you said, you said when no, you said win tonight. That's what I'm more convicted with, though, Okay, all right, I don't

know where I am on that. I think they'll split, and and I think fans need to be very happy with a split if they get a split, because it's to expect that they're going to go win both of these games. Be two teams who have not lost at home so far. And look again, teams we saw North Carolina lost the other night to Clemson. Teams are good teams, and North Carolina at home good teams are losing every day,

you know. I mean, I think, what was North Carolina third, fourth, third at the time, and they lost their Clemson they are they are now, They are now sixty and two at home against Clemson. It's crazy. Did you see some of the guys saying the slept through there? Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, they couldn't wake up. We're just kind of like Arizona not showing up emotionally and it has we know that that's what that's what teams do. The way I see it obviously,

because I think there's gonna be a split. You know, they lose tonight, they'll win Saturday. But I could see them winning tonight and then rolling out of bed Saturday and losing that game. Yeah, that too. I mean it could either one. If they win tonight, you're thinking, are you thinking, oh, great, they played well tonight. That means it's going to carry over. No, yeah, because it means nothing. It means nothing. Yeah, so I yeah, I don't know it. This

is the most interesting week of the of the season. I think so too. I think so too. You know, you know, in a two game series, very much so, given what we've seen, if they had been playing well like all seasons, you say, oh, they're playing well, they're gonn They're going to sweep. No, not the case. Did you did you pay attention to yesterday? You have any breaking news with the signings from yesterday? Did you pay attention some of them? Some of the

we talked about a bunch of them. You have it breaking news? Or I have one of them? There was an interesting thing that his recruit how his recruitment went, well, say that, but just the overall ranking not very good. Oh yeah, you're talking not very good. No, I was just gonna say not very good. But but does it really matter? No? It never hass I saw you exactly. I mean, it was nice for jad Fish to be, you know, have his recruit recruiting uh

uh seasons or whatever, you know, ranked really high. And you know what if you're if you're ranked up high, you're gonna say, hey, we're you know, we are recruiting when great and we're ranked high. And if you're not, you're gonna say, what is it? Well, it

hadn't been going well this year. Look, here's what I saw is that, you know, the running back room emptied out, you know this year, and they went and got a couple of running backs that, as we talked about yesterday, people say, well from Sanisday State in New Mexico. But yeah, they're pretty dam good though. And then they went and got some alignment, which you know, which they need, and so you know, do they need to go get a quarterback? No, So they lost

them on a big deal. They lost that guy to Washington. You know, they they've got, you know, the kid from Colorado who sat out last year. He's gonna be in the system for a lot, right, you know, they got a you know, a sophomore quarterback who was you know, who's gonna be in the Heisman discussion. So the fact that they lost that quarterback that followed, you know, the recruit that followed a jed to Washington, to me is not a big deal. But that's going to

count against you, you know, when they're doing new recruiting ranking. So I don't really yeah, you know, I think it was a SU media member kind of trying to point it out how Colorado and Arizona at the bottom of it. But I mean Arizona and Arizona and Arizona State are in two different Arizona's not gonna use recruiting through you know what as you would use it as. Right. Look, you know what, we'll see you on the

field, Yeah, exactly right. And and and you know, if I'm picking in Arizona Arizona State game right now, I'm saying that's gonna kick your ass again. Yeah. Now, maybe Ace gets better by that time. I don't know. But what I right now, as we saw last year, and when you compare the seventy to seven game to what a su did the next year, I would fully expect Arizona to not that game would not flip by you know, forty points, uh, you know, next year.

So you know it's hard player development. Plus you also mean you know you had a coaching change too. Yeah, so no, that that that one doesn't worry the ranking. Yeah, rank to me, not even a little bit. Yeah me either, tell me and we go back to this, because this is what we know. He didn't He went and got the guys you coach him up, play them o blah blah blah. He didn't care. Well, a bunch of two stars, two stars scoobies and we're good. Yeah, he didn't care one lick about it. You know.

Yeah. He was always like, you know, give us whatever ranking you want to give us, we'll find out. And then back then it was like, we'll find out in three years how good these guys are, because they'd assume a red shirt. And then a couple of years. But you know, a couple of years playing you still kind of measured. Yeah. Yeah, but you know, once in a while, you get you get a team act in here and uh, and right, well, that's then

he's he's a five star dude. Yeah, I mean he isn't the best guy ever to play too, he could be well no, no, no, no, coming in, yeah, coming in. Yes, the kids from South Point would have been surpassing. Yeah, because he's although the best recruit ever. Yeah, Okay, we'll see, we'll see what happens, because you can ever really gauge until they've come here and played and done a lot of stuff. So here we are, we'll figure it out. Hey, let's go to the break. Now, let's just okay, it's all

right. Well we got the Joe Toofoy is gonna come in and played with the Seahawks and the six Super Bowl, and uh we'll just get you know, talk again, talk with him about what that was like, and uh, we'll get his thoughts. Also now on the phone, we have Joe Tafoya, former UA football player and Super Bowl participant with Seattle back in the day. Does it seem like a long time ago? Joe, Well, now that

you say it, my goodness, I'm starting to feel old. As soon as you said that I had a lower back pain a little bit. Oh you need to know, Joe. Oh, you need to know, Joe about where where we're coming from, because I saw this when I was you know you're looking you up. Yes, you were born after I got out of high school. So if you're talking old, you're talking the two guys sitting over here. So that's all you do. Know we have more than back pain. Yeah, we have more than back pain, Joe, that's

no question exactly issues going on. Yeah. I've lived in dog years though, boys, so so uh, you know we were talking off aired. You know that. You know, we've talked to a couple of the guys who have been in Super Bowls, none of them who won a Super Bowl, And after all this time that it still stings for you guys. You know when you think about that game and you think about that year, what do you think about when you think of the Super Bowl? Okay, first,

you call me old, bad memory. Please don't hang up, Please don't hang up. You know. The one thing that I will say is that it's truly an experience. Like going through that whole thing is it's hard to focus on the game itself until you're in the game. I remember opening kickoff, looking up and just seeing all the flashes go on for opening kickoff, and then I looked over and tried to catch my guy that was running past me, and they made the tackle. The moment was where was that?

Where was your game? Was? Experience? I? Detroit? Detroit? So you guys were, yeah, okay in the in the dome. But again going back to you know, well, let's get okay, let's get back to a better time when you won the conference championship and you knew you were going to the super Bowl. You know, you're on the field, You've won the game, You're going to the super Bowl. What was that like? Wow, there's a lot of electricity in the air there.

The fans are just going bananas. You can feel it everywhere you go. You go through anywhere in town, and everybody's so excited. They're cheering you on. You see the flags everywhere, the colors. Everyone's in a good mood and happy. I just remember that being one of my proudest moments to walk off of that field knowing that we were going to the super Bowl. Such a great experience, good for my family, good for my friends,

my high school coaches were proud. College coaches were calling me up. You know, everybody's watching, and so if anyone has had a hand in helping you get to that spot, they call you up and they're proud too. It's not just you, there's a whole line of people that helped you get there and you make them proud as well. So that for me was the best part. So from that moment to the moment where all those guys are calling you for tickets, how long did that last? That does happen?

Everybody in the NFL who's active is allotted to tickets and they tell you not to sell them, but everybody does it anyway, make a little extra money. And going to the Super Bowl, you know that there's a lot going on down there. There's a lot for young guys to get into trouble with. But when you're playing in the Super Bowl, they allow you fifteen tickets. So that's what the real money's made, unless you unless you have a lot of family you really care about and you want to all of them the

game. So how many did you have an expense for? Everybody? Did you use the law? I used eight? I think the rest nice I paid for everybody's dinners and plane flight. Yes, it was a whole symbiotic thing. Man. Nice. So you guys won that conference championship at home, you and so we all know what and we've all seen what the Seattle fans and the Seattle crowds are like. You know, do you remember how loud it? God? And was it ever louder to you than it was?

You know, at the end of that game. There was a moment prior to the game when I was getting dressed in the locker room. And I remember the locker rooms underneath the stadium and the soutain zone, and there's just a small door that exits and it goes to the tunnel that enters the

stadium. And as the stadium was filling up, I was sitting at my locker, you know, I get my pads on, I started putting my helmet on, ready to go out, and somebody opens the door and this electricity just came into the room and you could see it and everybody they were just like vibrating at a higher frequency. Man, everybody was fired up. And that moment, walking out into the game, I knew for for sure that no one had a chance against us. Yeah, So I've asked the

guys all this week. So one, did you cry at the national anthem? And will you nervous before the game? I'm not really a crier. I was raised by an old school Hispanic dad. I had one of those we just talked about a little emotional yah. But no, what was the second part of that question, if you were nervous before the game? Oh? Yeah, I got nervous before every game high school, college. My m O was a go and I would throw up in the bathroom before every

game, just like playing an empty stomach. Wow. Very nervous, very very nervous. Well, okay, so let's go back to, you know, leading up. So there's a two week gap. Is that is that too long? Would you have rather played the game the next week or do you just feel like you needed some time to kind of decompress from realizing you're in the super Bowl and then some time to get ready for it. You

like the two week gap. I think there's two sides to that. As a football player, purely an athlete, I think that's too long of a gap. I would like to have it the next week where you just get out and get on the field. But you know, it's a once in a lifetime experience if that. And so there are a lot of elements leading up to the game. You've got, you know, they do your send offs at your city. Your home city doesn't send offs, and then you

arrive and you have to do all these events, including media day. There's so much that goes into it. I don't think the organization would be prepared in one week. There's just so much that's going on. But as an athlete, yeah, it's a little too long. Well, I'm sure you went to the media day. Did you get You know how crazy it is my reporters and non reporters asking them quick did get Did you get asked any

dumb questions? I think yeah, absolutely. I just remember when I was down on the field for media day, they blew a whistle and it was like a scene from Lord of the Rings. You know, all these all these media people are pouring down into the medium down onto the field, and at one point I had a German reporter speaking to me in German. I don't speak German. I had a Mexican univision. There was a guy holding a Troy Polamalo handpuppet and he was trying to talk to me. There was

Gilbert Godfrey Junior was standing next to me, cracking jokes. There was like five cameras in my face, all asking I don't even remember what they're asking, just the moment itself stupid and ridiculous. Right, So, you don't speak Spanish or you do? I understand a lot of Spanish, but I'm not comfortable speaking in My whole family speaks Spanish. My brother's wife doesn't even speak any English. I guess they did. Did your parents? Did your

parents yell at you for that growing up? You know? Mine did? Mine were like, yeah, I can't believe you don't speak you can't. You know, they would yell at me. They wanted me to learn English, so you know, English is the first language. When they started putting you in those English as the second language classes early on, you know you I don't know, my parents didn't want me to do that. Yeah,

all right? So okay, thinking thing about that that week outside of football players, right, because there were probably you know, there's always hall of famers or not stuff like that. Who was the most famous or maybe the person that you saw that you were like, Okay, this is really cool to see this person here was there anybody like that? Oh? Man, there was a couple of people like that. I'm in the tunnel getting ready to go out into the onto the field, and you know, we're lined

up as a defense, and there's a sky standing next to me. It was kind of long hair, and I look over and it's Mick Jagger. Oh wow, I was. I was standing right next to my dagger. Wow. You had to him and you know the singer Seal? Yeah, yeah, remember, Yeah, he came into our locker room and I walked over to try to shake his hand. Any big time me. You should have knocked him down from behind, you know, just from a forearm, shiver in the back or something. That's what that? Yeah, too funny.

Who's the half time one of his songs? Anyway? Well, the halftime. But there's there's so much type. There's a lot of craziness going on. You know, there's every party that you go to, there's another star studded lineup behind it. Who's who's the halftime guests? Do you remember that? It was the Roman Stone? Well that's why. So you you had been like a mountain over him. I mean, isn't he pretty small? Oh yeah, he's tiny. There's a really tall country singer. I

can't remember his name. He was also in there with us. He sang the national anthems for US. Okay, when you're at juve and you're thinking, God, I just got to get to the league. I just got to get to the league. And then when you get to the get to the league, you just got to get to the super Bowl? Is that how it is. I'm more of a yuleman, have such a hard work ethic and a workman's attitude that I usually try not to think too far ahead.

Most of my NFL career was spent on the bubble, so I was mostly thinking I got to make the team, you know, and then one thing leads to another. Some guy gets injured, you make a couple of good plays, and really, truly it's about luck more than anything, and it's being in the right situation with the right group of guys. So what everyone's dream is to go to the super Bowl. When you're playing in your backyard and you're throwing the ball with your friends, you want to be in

the super Bowl. And my moment was when the ball was kicked off and opening kickoff. I was on the field for opening kickoff, and I just kind of got lost in the moment. But I never really thought I need to get there. It was mind right, you hope to get there obviously. Yeah, okay, so let's let's let's walk through the game a little bit. You know, the Steelers defense was really damn good that year. Hindes Ward was you know, went off all that stuff. But as you're

going through the game, you know, where's your mind? You know? I asked this of who do I think who do we have the other day that I think it was Marquis Flowers, yes, and I was just asking him, Okay, what are you doing on the sidelines during a game? You know? What's what? What's what? You know? Are you watching the game? Are you are you preparing for when you go in again? What are you doing on the sidelines during this? During the Super Bowl?

During the Super Bowl? Yeah, it just at some point, maybe after the first quarter or in the first quarter, after you've run a couple of plays, is it literally just turns back into a football game. And that's the mentality that most guys have on the sideline. Now, the coaches were a little different, They were in a different space mind wise. They were

a little more amped up and felt the pressure more than we did. But I have to say that, like on the sideline, it turns into another game, and if you don't treat it like that, then nerves get you, and you know, every play seems a lot bigger than what it is. They get a first down, Oh no, the world's falling apart. But if you have played long enough, and I had been in my eighteenth year of organized football at that point, then at some point it's just you

know, another this is another play on the sideline. I would usually watch the games if there were plays that we need to refresh on, or if they were running a formation no one was familiar with, or somebody was out of gap on a couple of plays on the sideline. They'd bring you these cards, or they used to bring you these cars. Now they have tablets. You review all of that stuff. Once you get done with that, then you can go watch the game. You're in Seattle, right, You're

in Seattle. I'm in Seattle, Yeah, Seattle. Okay, if we can, I only we only have like too too many stuff? How how is it? Well? I won't go there yet. What do you think about the you of a football situation. Now, were you part of the group that met with the coach last night? I was, yeah, how'd that go? I was on the phone with them the other day. Yeah, I was really really impressed. I've known him for many years. He interned and he came in interned. I played football with his brother, and

so we've known each other. I sent him a text a while back and he actually called me and I said, coach, don't call me, start calling recruits. Man. But that's the kind of person he is, you know, He's like, I got a list of a thousand people I need to get back to. I'm going to get back to every one of them. Tenacious. It makes you feel welcome, you know. So so now you're in Seattle, uh kind of following Fish maybe been there? What's the

buzz up there? And there's mixed reviews. You know a lot of people didn't really understand why the other coach had left. You know, those are just your every average, everyday fans that don't pay that close attention. Some people that were die hard Husky fans don't like Fish. They want their coach

back, of course. And then you've got a handful of people who understand that he came from a program that he really revamped and rebuilt, and I think besides the optimism that comes with that, you know, it's the college game is so different now with all the ni O money and players leaving in portals and stuff. There's so much uncertainty. You have to have stability, and when you have a guy who's traveled around as much as Fish as it has, it's kind of hard to say, we got our guy, We're

good. You know. It feels like that with Brennan, but I'm not sure if it was like those Fish. I think that's one of the things that people feel about Brennan. And you know, as much as as much as Arizona fans won to think that Jed was going to be here for a long time, I think in their heart of hearts, they realized, you know, he was only to be here as long as until he could get, you know, have a lot better job, which he ultimately did.

But you gotta admit though him, he did a great job here. I do admit that, and I understand, you know, there's a business aspect for this. He's got a family, that's if that's what he was shooting for from the beginning. He didn't really let that be known to us as alumni. He kind of told us that he wanted to be around. But you know, everything's got a price, so as soon as they put the right money on the table for you, you're probably going to sell. All

right. Last question, A great job was taking us from one to eleven to you know, we were slated to be in the top ten, maybe even the top five next year. Right right, Okay, Last question and again a question that we ask of everybody. We've talked to you this week about the Super Bowl and taking into account that you know, not a great memory because you guys, you lost the game. Do you watch the Super Bowl? Or if you or how do you watch the Super Bowl? A?

Yes, I watched the Super Bowl. I usually will watch it at somebody's house who's making something delicious, So if anybody has tacos, I'm over there and make a lot of qualifications for watching the game wherever I go. I like to go with friends and people that you know, they don't want to ask me a million questions, what's what's going on with display? They want to I like to be a spectator too, don't want to just watch

the game well before with that. So when you do watch a game, how do you watch a game and analytically or just kind of before enjoyment. Yeah, no, I can't help but watch it analytically. After reviewing thousands and thousands of hours film. You know, you see formations, you see different hand placements, you understand down distance, you're looking at the clock, all those things factoring, and you can sometimes read the play ahead of time.

When my friends will say, what, you know, what happened on that play? Well, that's a holding penalty, so it's going to come back anyway. I watch it with an very experienced eye, say that much. Yeah, okay, very cool, Joe, thanks for joining us. Appreciate you right, well, thanks for having me. Boys, Yeah, take care. Thanks as they seeing Hispanic world call lev En. And speaking of that, we are tomorrow in our second hour, we're gonna have Jack McGruder in our our favorite gambling addict. Shouldn't call him an addict. Is he gonna tell us what not to do or what to do? Well, he's he's gonna tell us things to think about doing. Then then you decide to go whether or not you should go the

way. But Jack's gonna come in here. We're going to talk super Bowl proposition bets and probably you know who thinks gonna cover all that kind of stuff. So we'll do a super Bowl super Bowl betting session with Jack in the second hour tomorrow. You know, we were talking about are we going to get somebody who's won a super Bowl on our show? And in fact we are tomorrow. Josh Miller, who was a punter on the Dick Tomy teams in the early nineties. I think he was a punter on the ninety three

team. He was played thirteen years in the NFL. He was a punter for the Patriots the year that they won the Super Bowl in two thousand and five, they beat the Eagles. So Josh is going to join us tomorrow and so we'll actually get to hear from somebody of what it felt like to not only playing at Super Bowl, but win one. So that'll be fun. Yeah, Okay, we've had him all before too. Yeah, we had him on. I went to look back, it's been three years.

Yeah, we had him on. And right after we right after we got here, right right, we just do one of the better, probably the best putter we've ever covered here. Yeah, you know, well I always go back to after the ninety three season, and uh, you know, I've told the story many times that I played I played summer baseball with Dick

Tomy and we were just having a chat. We always avoided talking football with him, but one time, I know, we got into it and we were telling him about, you know, how good you guys are going to be in ninety four? Right that was the season that yea that they were gonna be sports They were Sports Illustrated number one and all that stuff. And we said, you know what, you know, what do you think, Dick? I mean, you guys gonna be really good. He goes,

whatever happens this season, just remember we're going in there. We're going in without a punter. We don't have a punter. And he said, just pay attention to that. And I'm like, how the how bad can it be if you just tell, you know, go get a punter. Right, there should be somebody on capus who can kick. But he made the point because you know, Dick was always like special teams was as important as the other two, and it was. It turned out, no question that

they part of why they were so good that year before. It's funny because of Josh Mill. It's funny you talk about that infenditing coaches out there listening. It's the you know, it's not between the teams on the field, with the players on the field. You need a good goalie, punter, kicker. How many times I kickers lost two games? Yeah, think about, think about and what comes mind is Mike Stoop's time here where it seemed

like special teams were an afterthought. Yeah right, and you thought if you just had a little bit better special teams, you'd win a game or two more, you'd be better. How many times did did the Arizona lose and or win with the kicker? Yeah? You know stoops first year they had Wisconsin by the you know what over here, remember that game and the storm during the game and all that stuff, and they missed a field at the end of the game that would have won they It would have been a huge

win for him, like it would have been. I think it was their second or third game under him, you know, and they end up going three. Well Richrod with yeah, although he was very good right the Michigan SUSC. I mean, those guys make a big difference. And I'll just never forget Dick Tomy saying that's how important our punner was in nineteen ninety three, that in nineteen ninety four one of our big worries is that we don't have a punner. I'm like, Wow, Okay, who was the punner

that year? I'd have to look it up. I don't remember. I don't remember. I was not covering the team back then, but I do remember when he first got here, uh, because I think I was. That was my last year that they said watch this kid, he's gonna be good. Right, we have a call. Let's take this. Hi, you're on the air, and Ie on the ball. Hey Jay, Hey Steve, this is done? Don what's up? How you guys doing it good? Thanks? Did you listen to our interview yesterday with the ad from

you and M I did not. I missed it and I haven't got a chance to catch up on the podcast yet, but I will. Okay, cool, But what I want I wanted to apologize to the class for my for my cavalier assessment of the coaching job that Tommy Lloyd is doing. I can't I refresh us. I went back and I watched the highlights, and everything seems to be going great done. This is your you know, after I called the other day and the gentleman behind me that they called in after

me, and he kind of called. He said he didn't know if I go to the games and stuff, and I do not. I used to have season tickets, but I don't go to the games. And you see so much more when you're at McHale. I mean, you you get to see everything. You don't get to hear it all, but you do get to see a lot more stuff than you get to see on the TV. And you know, you've you can't argue with the winning percentage and the style

of play. It's just it's just frustrating. And we can and I've said it is we won't be able to tell what kind of team this was until after the season is over, right, you know, if if if they if they learn from these slow starts and things like that, and and they get it, they get it, they get the ship righted come tournament time, and we're all going to be buying you know, Final four T shirts

and all that stuff. Well, everybody said, Steve, but but no, I'm I'm looking forward to watching these games this weekend and seeing how the guys are playing. I do like a lot of the things that a lot of the individuals do. Just sometimes you know, it's hard to watch. Yeah, well, I'm glad you can't here come to Jesus moment. Oh no, me too. You know it's I feel a lot better. I've slept better in the last couple of nights. I mean, everything, everything

else seems to be going pretty good. God, I hope you're not losing of Arizona basketball. I also like, I also like reading these these uh draft class evaluations on Twitter that you know, Arizona's doing so bad and everything else, and it's like, hey, they got sixteen or seventeen starters back from last year. This year's draft class is not for next year, right right? You know, so we're getting the Juco guys, we're getting the

transfer portal guys. To have some gaps and everything else, and you know, you know, if you want to judge Arizona fairly, give them a full cycle of recruiting and we'll see what they get in their high school class for No. Twenty five. But you know that's another one. I mean with the football thing, with everything that's happened since the Alimo Bowls, like you can't wait for football season to start. I'm trying to get I'm trying to get my crew together to see, if you know, see who wants

to all get season tickets and try to get them together. And I hope that, you know, you know, I just hope that that this team is able to build on what they've done and get Brent Brennan started on the right foot. Yeah, right, I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised. And people who are kind of kind of poo pooing it or what you know, underlooking at underselling it, they'll be fine. They'll be fine. I don't think I'm going to be surprised. I think I think that I'm

expecting them to be pretty good. It's just how good are they going to be? Right? You know? And and I've said it before, I'm not looking for a national championship out of Arizona football. I'm looking for an enjoyable season, get to go to bowl games. And win bowl games more often than they lose Bowl games. And I just want to see a competitive a competitive product on the field. There you go, there you go. That's really all what you want, right, I mean, that's what you

want. I will say one of the most funnest games that I ever went to at McHale Center was the eighty seven tournament game against UTEF that first round game that I think went double overtime and yeah, and they lost. How was that fun? And well, it was a great game. It was a great game. I didn't say it was fun. Fun for most of it. Yeah, but that one little sliver of orange, it turned McHale Center into a fifty to fifty house because those folks were loud. I mean

it was. It was loud like a rivalry high school game. Yeah, I remember, and that I mean, that was an exciting game. That was a lot of it was. It was exciting, it was and it was a lost and there was a lot you know, those a lot better games when we beat UCLA at home and got to see those. Yeah, but you know, it's that's what I want to see out of Arizona football, all right, Man. Make it exciting. Win some games that you're not supposed to win, you know. That's that's and win more games than

you lose exactly. All right, Ton, we appreciate it. We've got a break for the top of the hour, so thanks again for the call. Appreciate it. Thanks guys. Cool. Yeah, good to see my guy finding Jesus exactly, you know, being really the bush was burning and

he realized what he had said. Okay, all right, we're coming up to the top of the hour, SIDS here with breaking news for for a Thursday and then again, Doctor Kevin Lehman will be joining us in studio UH to just talk about some of the psychology of athletics and you know, some of the things that some of these young athletes are going through. So be sure to stick around. It'll be breaking news here in about fifteen four minutes, so stick around.
