Dreamy Live. I mean, iHeart Radio WAF. This is I On the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jacob Zalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifty He welcome back to win the Ball hero Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera, He's Jacobs as No, we have good Timmy Lloyd press cover. No no, no breaking news. Oh yeah, that's right. You guys were talking about on the Ball baking news at the Tommy Lake Prescott is in the next segment after the uh yeah, start with the Dino Babers news became official. I
know it took a little longer. Some people maybe thought it wasn't gonna work out with the Syracuse stuff, but I mean through all of it, we knew. We just took a little longer, but we got Dino. What do you think, Steve, Oh, I think it's a great move, right, great move. It's been took a little while, like you said, bringing back the old Yeah, well, you know head coaching experience.
Right, Look, if if it was if it wasn't Dino Babers who's been here before as the offensive coordinator, and Brent Brandon had hired a former head coach as though see, people will be one hundred percent behind it, right. I know Dino Bambers, Baber's got some miles now, he's been he's been doing this for a really long time. But you know again, he
he's he's here, he's been here. I think he understands right right, understands he was doing pretty good at Syria because all it takes is a couple of bad years and sure in your toe, but he did have them in you know, top fifteen for a couple of seams. So yeah, I mean one of those years he got off to like seven to ozer or something like that and then kind of fade a little bit. But I like to hire too. We've got a lot of good guys over there, a lot
of connections, a lot of connections. He has h he's I believe he's from Hawaii as well, so more even more Hawaii pipeline. So that's good news. And moving to to Caario Davis. He is update on the updated roster. We will see what happens. But as far as we know right now, no no nos, no news is good news right right. He jumped into the portal but hadn't has a you know, announced with school or anything, well yesterday or today. Well, the portal is closed. You
can't get in the portal. But if you're in the portal, you can still sign with whoever you okay, So you don't have to sign in the thirty day window. You just you just got to be in the portal. You know. If you're in the portal right now, you can sign with whoever okay, right uh, or you can go back to where you are, no more jumping. Yeah, the portal deadline pass is passed for Arizona. It's wide open for U c l A. Yeah, yeah, it's
just barely starter for UCLA. So we'll see. I haven't heard of anything. Yeah, I haven't heard either. I have not seen any U c l A. We'll move into Arizona baseball as their season starts. They announced that they're going to be having a new uniform, some powder blue uniforms. Very very different than what we're used to write. They're sharp looking, play good, feel good, feel good, play good. Just give me some winds. I don't care what you think. I think. Nineteen eighties of
Philadelphia Phillies. Nineteen eighties Saint Louis Cardinals with the power of Blue and Red. So how do you feel about them. Honestly, I like them. They're different. Yeah, you know, part of it, Steve is those those are the same colors that my high school baseball team. I I mean, I wasn't on the varsity, but our swar High school had uniforms just like those as well. The pot of blue with the red. I like
the look. It's a good look. It's like, for instance, I like the fact that in any of its uniforms, in any team, Arizona has not done black. I like the fact they haven't. I like that, and so because it just doesn't fit. But and pot of blue isn't an Arizona color, but it's certainly a baseball color in terms of uniform that's got some history behind it. So I'm looking at him here a picture on social media. I really like the look. I think they're good looking uniforms.
Yeah, I think they're had some excitement, you know for the guys, and hopefully, you know, starting pitching this year is better. I know the offenses for Arizona is usually what what fans like to go out for. But yeah, we'll see how this team looks. I think everyone's excited. Yeah they start tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow night is the opener Northeastern, who's coming in ranked so technically probably supposed to beat Arizona. But Arizona's got
a three game set with Northeastern starting tomorrow. Yeah, okay, and I think what's six o'clock or six point thirty. Let me look it up real quick, six o'clock, six o'clock tomorrow, one o'clock Saturday noon on Sunday, so at High Corbidfield. Good. Good to have baseball back. Now
we'll move into college basketball news. I don't know if you guys saw this, but Horizon League team Detroit Mercy, the men's team, they snapped a twenty seven game losing streak last night and they had a loan fans storm the court. What did you see that? I saw a one fan court storm. He strolled through it. Yeah, yeah, he just got on the cart started jumping around. It was great. You know, guy was losing twenty six and that's got twenty seven. That's got to be hard. That's
got to be hard on you know, everybody that's the court warm? Yeah, warming, that's pretty pretty good. That was a lot of fun. Speaking with basketball, the Pistons Isaiah Stewart was actually arrested for his altercation with the Sun's Drew your Banks. Did you see that about that? I saw, I saw the headlines, but I didn't see the fight. I haven't seen a video. But the way we described, he sucker punched him in
the parking lot. Oh okay, yeah, you know, on the way in, and I guess some words were exchanged and then he just dropped him and he got arrest Well he got a ticket, yeah, yeah, they say arrested. He didn't go to jail. He was giving us titation for assault for technically not being arrested. I mean, when you get it hard, when you get a traffic ticket, that's not being it's called it's technically being arrested. But you didn't go to jail. It's called Wednesday night in
the NBA, right. Some one said Draymond Green's handing them the baton. Well, Dreymonds had some issues already this week. I mean, yeah, so who did play a nine or two ago they got Clippers? Was the Clippers and there was a fight with uh what's his name from Duke and he
kind of you knew he was dying to get involved. He didn't get involved, but it is what it is. NBA basketball and then also with NBA last night, I don't know if you guys saw, looks like Steve Kurz kind of had enough of Klay Thompson and his antics and his antics, his antics, so he hasn't been playing well. He has been playing well, he's kind of been I mean, I don't know if you'd call it complaining, but just kind of the way that he's responded to certain things and certain
things defensively. And I've never seen Kurr react this way, but he kind of like threw his hands down like head look like like kind of moving down and he was, yeah, just disgusted kind of with it. And everyone's saying that this might be the end, the end of it for uh, he's not that good a player anymore. He's been you know, his his lifeblood has been you know, the three point shot, and you know, did a lot of good with that with you know, helped him win championships,
but it's kind of gone away. He's if he if he can't make three pointers, then his value was like no sure and his and his trade value was just almost right. Yeah, it's just very very odd to see Curve react that way. We've never seen, i mean ever since that court has been there. It's he's kind of been you know. Yeah, Yeah, it's been a rough go for them as they they lost last night again flash brother, they've been okay letally they've been started winning again, but not
as well. Yeah they lost us close game. Yeah, I saw I saw interesting news from Japan Rentaro Sasaki, the Japanese high school slugger, rather than joining the Japan Pro League, he's gonna go and play at Stanford. Whoa. Yeah, good for Stanford and good that we're getting him out of the league so we don't have to see that guy. Wow, you know, I mean in the end if something, you know, I always thought, how could he turn down to Stanford scholarship? You're an athlete, right,
Blake Martinez remember and and any and John Volpi from here? Uh you know, got you got the got you know, you get a chance to go to Stanford. Well that's the kind of set for Jay. That's the whole thing in this being in this PAC twelve and people say, well it's Arizona and blah blah blah. Okay, you have a chance to go to Stanford. And I thought the fun with this with you or talked about it Stanford USC Washington, Oregon to play football. Just play football. You're gonna
say no, Yeah, you crazy, You're not. Yeah. I mean all the way back to the Collins twins, right and they went to stand and Luke thought he had him. No, No, I've told you this story before because I covered well obviously I covered the team and then and I talked to uh doing the doing the recruiting, and they chose Stanford and Wright and lou thought that he had him, and I try to talk to them. The parents wouldn't put him on the phone, but the mom talked to
me, it's just Steve. If you have a chance, best is going to be there for just a certain amount of time. You have a degree from Stanford. Do you have that for a lifetime? Oh? Thank you, missus Collins were talking to me. I mean, I would never let my kids go to a SU, but Stanford, I said, get the hell out of here, go to Stanford. Create. Uh, we're breaking another Adam or something, create something, Get me out of this. Taking
with the college news. Some crazy news out of LSU running back Trey Hawley was arrested on felony for a time. Did second degree murder chart? Yeah? Murder charge and he actually turned himself in. Yeah, the report says guns guns again, but you know, who knows what happened, right, But we know that he's he shot somebody, allegedly shot somebody. He's got
a second attempted second degree murder count. That's that significant prison time. If you get a lot of times, they'll plead these down to assaults or whatever and maybe you'll do a year six months, But once you got a felony on your on your record, if you they're never going to plead him down to a misdemeanor on something like this. So he's gonna have a felony on his record for life and that's just not a good way to have to go
through life. And he's a young dude. So yeah, I mean I always think about if you know college, college athletes, you would think would more more likely stay away from that stuff because they are athletes, but then some of them don't. Some don't. Yeah, moving into the NFL. Uh, I'm sure you guys have heard the news, but uh, Steve Wolkes was really those duties as defensive coordinator. Following the Super Bowl, some name early names have popped up, like Mike Rabil or Pete Carroll, names
like that. So it's gonna be super interesting to see how that search goes for them, because you know, the Niners have been having to replace defensive coordinators quite often, like this is three out of four years or something like that is what I thought I heard. Yeah, you get no continuity there, and that's hard. You know. Somebody asked the question, Okay, you're you're you know, you fired this guy after the Super Bowls that you
lost. If they had won, would they still have fired him? Nobody has the answer to nobody, But all indications for the reason they didn't involve the game, right, Yeah, I mean yeah, I mean they actually played a good defensive game. So they're the third best defense in the in the NFL. So what yeah? What, what the heck? What the heck was going on? Was it just a personality personalities didn't match up or probably that, Yeah, And I think Nick Bosa even mentioned it in his
postseason press conference. He said that we weren't prepared for the we weren't prepared for the Mahomes option play there towards the end. So so maybe there was some indicatives that maybe they weren't prepared as as much as they like. I'm not sure how, but weren't prepared for the Mahomes option. Isn't that like a number one, A one B outside of what yeah runs? Yeah, that that the play? I think it was the fourth and one there, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, It's strange. It wouldn't that be
your like number two things? Yeah. And then also that time out that Shanahan used to kind of go over with Wilkes like, hey, I don't want to I don't I don't like that look right. So I don't know if it was leading up to this game that they had issues, but ultimately they're gonna have to replace him in I mean, they're there's some names out there. We'll see what what happens. But their staff has just been getting
poached all over. Running backs coach Anthony Anthony Lynn is going to be with the Commanders, and their past game coordinator Clint Kubiak is the Saints offensive coordinator now, and they lost their assistant line coach and assistant d line coach. So yeah, I think this is a lesson though for for Arizona fans as well though, because when it's when your team has success, you can't be surprised when when players or coaches are trying to get poached by by a bigger
schools. Yep, yep, yep. Yeah, that's all the major news I had on off you guys had anything to discuss. Something just came across and we've been talking about there's been a lot of discussion about the how much the increase in interest in football among women, right, the whole thing with Taylor Swift and all that kind of stuff. So things just came across us that said that female wagering on the Super Bowl, female wagering jumped fifty one
percent. Wow, well, there's a lot of in your in your fantasy football. Do you have women? Yeah, plenty of party three? Yeah? Two? How many? How many? There's ten of us? I think twenty percent of them. I mean you see them all. I see a lot of them in fantasy football. I don't I don't like it, but they're creeping up. I thought you're going to go with the fan viewing between twelve year old ten year old girls to twenty year old girls two million,
two million? Uh, watch you new new list new watchers right because of Taylor Swift right, and then also the jumping flag football has been crazy for women, women's flag football, high school flag football. Yeah, look, it's great. Yeah, I love that it's all growing. And we'll have a correction. You want to do the wrestling thing there real quick before
we had the head to the break correction. Uh, we reported just from other sources from and and Marals and those guys, that Audrey Hymann is the wrestler at Sunnyside, was the first female wrestler to qualify for the boys state wrestling tournament. Turns out that her name is Miu Yamamoto from Tampe Cronodil sold back in nineteen ninety three qualified for the state wrestling tournament. And then there was Shauna Isbel from Flagstaff, Coconino, also back in two thousand and nine.
So she's not the first, but she is the first because today she won her first two matches and she is in the semi finals in her weight class. So that's a first. All right, we'll be right back. We've got the Tommy Lloyd press conference coming up. N it's entirety right after the breaks, stick around. The Windows Depot is more than a Windows store.

Hey, welcome back to Why in the Vaucare on Fox sportsporteen fifty on Steve, He's Jay, and now we have some Timmy news press conference right right, playing this press conferenced in its entirety previewing ASU
and just talking about some other issues as usual for the week. So we're just going to play that and let it run. So listen in all right, guys, let's get it done. Time off and I don't know how much time did you take off? One? Yeah, we just we took you know, mixed the day off. I mean, but it's been good. It's been good. Is that what it's been these last Well, we work on ourselves every day, you know, I mean, and we work on ourselves every day and we prepare to play against opponents every day. So
it's been business as usual. What do you mean if you guys have recently played the last two games, Well, you know, I mean Arizona States. You know, they're a dangerous team. They're they're they're you know, streaky, you know, and and and and and I say that in uh and with all due respect you know, to to We know that they're going to come in here and they're gonna give a great effort. And you know, they got some you know, really talented individual players. They play extremely
hard. You know, they're they're probably one of the most you know, aggressive defensive teams will have played all year. And then you know, offensively, they have ability to make make difficult shots and and so so we got to be dialed in. And you know, Collins is a really good player at both ends of the floor. And then Neil is really talented, you know, and in Perez, we've never played against him, but you know, I'm obviously he scored a lot of points over the courts of his career,
and he's and he's really effective. And you know, Gaffney continues to develop and he's talented and dangerous. I mean, there's not many guys who can catch a lob and hit a three, and he can do that. And you know that they got some bigs that are aggressive. And then the Miller kid, you know, you know, it's a high level recruit.
I know he's had some injuries and transferred a little bit, but you know, he's also I've seen him play in high school and I know, you know, he's a lefty that's capable of, you know, getting really hot. You know, it seems like when Michael crowd shows out, when UCLA or Asus on the other sideline, what are you seeing kind of what we
you see from this crowd this weekend? Raising more juice? Well, I expect to see, you know, great energy from our crowd, and our crowd's been I think they've been great, you know, in my three years, this is I think like the best they've been, you know, overall. And you know, not not that I need to be rating him or anything, but I think they've been great. And I think they know this team has a chance to be special, and they know we're competing for a
PAC twelve championship in the last year of the PAC twelve. So I think our fans are all aboard and behind us with what went into Kylon's injury at the end of the Utah game, but maybe not knowing how much you were
gonna have him for Colorado. What was the preparation process like to get Conrad ready for when you've turned after the game is real minutes and Conrad is ready, And you know, I mean in Jay Rock, you know, you know, you know, told me that he felt was pretty certain that Kylin would be okay to play, and you know, and and Conrad playing in that game really had nothing to do with you know, Kylon's you know, you know, banged up shoulder. It had to do more with you know,
I was just managing the game. We had some foul trouble the clocks at twelve oh one, and you know, I, you know, we had a little bit of a lead and I and I just felt like the game, the way the game was being played, that Conrad could impact it. And it is and I trust putting the ball in his hands and and you know it, you know, I didn't think it would go bad, you know, but but it almost went perfect, you know, his little
run in there. So I think He's a guy that you know, I really believe in him, and I know, you know, over the course of his career at Arizona, he's going to become a fan favorite and a real contributor here. Did you see him getting minutes in the first half in a game? I mean, I honestly, you know, I haven't thought that far ahead, you know, I mean, just this was a situation, you know, where the game is playing out. I'm trying to manage the game and win the game. I you know, look up and see
an opportunity to put him in. We're in foul trouble. It was, you know, it wasn't I didn't, you know, make a decision before the game that I was gonna put Conrade into the second half of the twelve minute media timeout. It's just how the game played out. So if it happened, I think Conrad would be fine, and I think we would be
fine, either of the rivalryes. Since you've been here, you know, I try not to overthink it, you know, I mean, I mean, I know, you know it it runs a lot deeper in some people than me, you know, I mean, I know, you know, probably you know, people don't realize you know Bobby and I are friends, you know, I mean we're friendly. I mean we don't just hang out all the time or talk on the phone all the time, but we're definitely
you know, we have a good relationship. And you know, I respect him as a person and as a coach, and and you know, so I don't try to get much beyond that, you know, I mean, I know not only have play Arizona State twice. I know it's gonna be a hard game. You know, just the way they're built, they're a dangerous team, so you know, but I also understand our fans are very passionate about it, and I and I and I'm I'm cool with that.
I respect that. How much do the newcomers know about the rivalry? And you know, I have the veterans of the team help, so I give some more knowledge about who played the game over Yeah, I mean, I think that's always something for us. You know that. You know, when when you have you know, half your team's international guys, you know, sometimes they don't understand the built in rivalries. You know that that happened within
college basketballs and in fan bases. You know, now if they're playing against another country, that they grew up playing against They understand, so you just have to kind of get on that level and explain it to them a little bit, you know. And then our are our guys that have been around you don't know, you know what this game means means to our fans and what it means to us. And in my main focus, to be honest,
is you know how this game impacts our season. I mean, that's how I really focus on, I think, and what I have different circumstances, different players, especially for them, but just the way they won last year with that sixty foot or whatever it was on Senior Day sticks in the lines of the guys you have back from that. I mean, I mean, I'm sure they have a good feeling about it, and I'm sure we don't have a great feeling about it, but you know, we don't sit
around and talk about it, you know. You know, I just know situationally, we probably could have handled things a little bit better, and that starts with me. But you know, I learn and I grow too big picture about this team. Right now, you guys, we have we have coffee opposition on Saturday night, just when you guys go on the road or the toughest swing in the Pac twelve. You win in triple over time. Why does that be the toughest. Why can't Arizona Arizona State be the toughest?
Just wise, but you get your life back it up with facts. I'm cool, thank you, good for you, and you're une back underneath you after a triple overtime game and then going and playing the way you did at Colorado? Who I'm lost to? How do you feel about your guys
or we get of that? I like where we're at. I mean, I like where we're at, but you know, more importantly, I like where we're going, and you know, and my job is just to make sure we continue to get better and tighten things up and you know, give ourselves the best possible chance every night out to win games. I mean, so I like where we're at, you know, now, liking where we're at and guaranteeing that we play great on Saturday or two different things. You
know, we got to come out and make it happen. And it's that time of year, you know, February going into March. You got to come out and you got to make it happen every day. There's no what
you did last week doesn't really impact this week. Some of these last shot possessions, you know, Florida Atlantic, Utah, where you're trying to win the game in the end, How would you best describe offensively what you're looking to try to I mean, it's a I mean, I know, from your guys' seat, it probably looks like it could be better, and it could be better. But I would also say from the reality, it's a
lot harder than it looks. If you watch the end of these games, like on a night in night out basis, I mean, it's hard to get good shots at the end of the game. You know, it really is. And you know, you you know, by this time of year, you're heavily scouted. You know, teams know your tendencies. I feel like we're trending in a better direction now than maybe when we did the Florida State game, and you know, the second overtime, you know, you
thought that's my fault. You know, they were they were switching defenses, and you know, and I figured, man, I'm gonna call it time out and they're just gonna switch defenses again, you know, And I was like, hey, we got the ball in one of our better players hands, and I know he's capable of making a shot. You know, he and I have talked since then that, you know, we we probably don't
need to settle for a thirty footer. We need to put the ball on the floor, use our athletic ability and make a play, you know, whether it's for yourself or for our teammates. So it's just it's just hard to script at the end of a game, it really is. You know, teams. You know, you could play against a team all game and they're playing a certain type of defense and you get in the last possession,
now they switch everything or they go to a zone, you know. So it's just it's a lot easier said than done, which I guess in terms of not wanting to turn it over in that in that well, I mean that's the most important thing. I mean, if the game is tied, I mean, the biggest responsibility is they don't get a shot on goal the other team, you know, if you have the ball, I mean, that's that's the number one thing. Don't put yourself in a position to lose,
you know. So now, yeah, you want to be mindful and be aggressive on offense for sure, to you know, create opportunities, but I thought, you know, I can't remember it was the end of the first overtime or maybe regulation. You know, Caleb drove the ball hard and there was contact could have been called a foul. I mean, you know, not that anybody would want to gain necessarily and like that, but probably throughout the flow of the game was a foul. They don't call it,
So you know that that's that also happens. You know, players know that, you know, you put the ball on the floor, you drive it in there, you know, you know you're you know, are you going to get the same call that you would have got at the sixteen minute mark? Probably not, So you know, I think that that factors and players and coaches' minds as well. Use averaging about twelve steals a game. Is it mostly poking the ball out of someone's hands or is it doc jumping?
They are extremely handsy, extremely aggressive, and they're not afraid to take chances. So so when you play them, you got to play with great fundamentals and great poise, and you know, it just it's just unique how they play defense and they're very aggressive and they're good at it. They're similar. I mean they then you voice him in. I think they had nine transfers last year, a lot of new faces. Are they kind of fundamentally still look the same when you look at it. Yeah, I mean I think
they're playing the same way, you know. I mean I think they are, for the most part playing playing very similar And you know, Perez is a little different entity. You know, he's kind of a power fore man. You know, his ability to put the ball on the floor, get to the free throw line, post up, you know, things like that. So but yeah, but but but but all in all, it's similar
to how they've been. Are they kind of an example of I don't know or if you guys even think of this stuff, just the way it is nowadays where you have nil and other things which appeared to be a factor with him and after you know, Bruce, I only have enough bandwidth to coach one program, and that's Arizona. So I don't have enough bandwidth to be
worrying about what other people are doing or or it is. You know, it's obviously it's a tough business, you know, I just know Saturday, no matter how he slice and dice it, it's gonna be a hard game. He's played very well lately overly. Is it mostly an energy or what's been the transition for him to give? Yeah, I think he's played with great energy and effort. I think you always want to start there with any
player, you know, and especially your big guys. And you know, I just thinkause he's you know, his confidence has kind of returned to a high level. And yeah, he's played great. I mean when O plays really good and with great energy and great effort, he's a he's a separator for us. So you know, I'm happy for him and I'm happy for our team. That's the way he's been playing. I was wondering about Jade and the way he's been playing too, And you know, obviously he's accepted
that role. I'm wondering how you manage that, and have you had to manage it with family, posse, who's ever around him? You know, because a guy like that, with his pedigree and you know, well, for one, for one, I'm not going to comment on what I would do with a family or a posse. Okay, okay, so I'm not doing that too. Jaden Bradley is a great, high character kid who his number one focuses on helping his team win and you know what, could he
have a bigger role maybe? Is he thriving in the role he's in. Yes, and that's very important for us and for any program to be good. So I'm thankful we have him. I really value him, and I think he's gonna have a great impact on Arizona basketball over the course of his career. Yes, I mean, like, because you know, he's got Donald with IMG, got all that went to Alabama then left when it looked like his roles a little reduced. You think on the without knowing him,
maybees got my big guy who losts me. He's a high character team first, amazing person. I mean, enough said with Kylon, can you simplify it to if he's aggressive he's more likely to play well? Then well, I mean I think you could deduce that with almost any player, you know, but but for sure, I mean, yeah, when Kylon is more aggressive and more decisive, he's had more success, you know, but that's
part of growing and learning, learning, you know. I mean, I mean, hey, listen, Kylon's getting better week by week, and he might not always see it, you know, statistically or at his performance, but you know, I mean somebody had told me, you know, I think somebody's doing our sig job. And told me that he thirty points over a weekend was his highest two game total of his Arizona career. So I
mean it's pretty good. He's getting better and and I love where he's at, and I like the conversations we're having, you know, and I think you know, in one of those games, I can't remember which game it was, but you know, he and JB combined for twenty five points, like you know, I don't know, seven eight assists in one turnover. I mean that's that's great production from you know, your point guard spot. I mean, so, so you know we're lucky at Arizona to have really
good players. Your defense to be aggressive, Yeah, for sure. I mean I want it to be. I mean, you have more seals than ASU does, and you have the seven guys with at least twenty. Is it a matter of more opportunistic or always trying to end the possession before a shot? No, I mean we're going to play solid, sound defense. But you know, we were not afraid to pressure the ball. We're not
afraid to be handsy, We're not afraid to break on a pass. So yeah, no, I mean we better be playing aggressive defense or you know, you know, I probably won't be very happy. One more question. You had said up last week in terms of a question about altering your lineup that you felt good about where you were at. Where does that feeling come from when you're still young in your coaching career from the standpoint like last year you did make a change this year, you don't. How do you kind
of well young? Hmm. I don't know about if I feel young twenty five years. You know, I've been around a lot, and you know, and believe it or not, you know, my mind doesn't really turn
off thinks about the game twenty four to seven. So you know, I just think you you know, you feel like you know what's best for your team and the players on your team, and you know it doesn't mean there's not another way to do it. But but you know, I'm I'm I'm comfortable and convicted in the way we're doing things and and I feel like our players are as well. Okay, there we guys, can we have it for with Tommy Lloyd? We'll come back, yep, Okay, we'll come

We'd love to hear from you new callers accepted first time listeners exactly. That'd be great. So I just think of the press conference. What do you think of that? You just, you know, what do you I mean, I don't know, I don't know what's he gonna say. He's kind of I don't know. I asked him two questions that you know, I didn't really care about the answers. But you know, he's been here, this is his third year. Is it really a rivalry? Not really,
but they do sneak up on you every now and again. Oh yeah, he just kind of play up a issue. Just hasn't been good for a long time, like almost ever, almost ever. But you know, when Bill Frieder was there in the nineties, they beat Arizona con every now and again. You think of the fat lever teams, fats waiting the back of the day, but even under the sewn Sean Miller was barely over five hundred
against them. Yeah, and his good team, well it was in that when in that time they had James Harden and Eddie house Cup, guys like that. Yeah. Maybe, but everyone that was pretty damn good in those times. He just didn't, you know, he'd be stunned. That was his achilles heel from time to time. If you look at the record, that's probably gonna be fourteen and twelve, maybe in twelast the last big one was like what twenty eighteen seven? He was he was part of that right
up until up in Tempeede again. Yeah, yeah, here we gotta call Hi. You're on the air and on the ball. Hey Jay, Hey Steve, this is Donnie. How you doing, Doug? How are you? I'm doing good, man, I'm doing good. I'm a little disheartened after that press conference. How so well, I just I just found out Tommy don't care about the rivalry. Yeah, he just he just said him,
him and uh him and his confounderate Bobby there. You know, they just they love to hang out and you know this is gonna be one of those things for all we don't like to play each other kind of thing we want to hear. But he wants to win every game. And look what he said, Jay, I know, but I'm saying what he said. You know, he wants to win every game. But he did say that he's not going to take that, he's not going to take the rivalry more
serious than that. And that's okay. Who who do you think is Arizona Basketball's biggest right? Is it a s U? It's not. I would say a s U is one A in in the league. In the league, it's U C L A on the national on the national thing. Historically, I would say I would I would call it Duke. More recently it would be Wisconsin. Let me ask you, you're you're you're you're you're a semi old guy, right your years older Steve, and Steve's pretty old.
Thinking back to the let's say the seventies in football, when a SU was beating the hell out of Arizona every year, and and they you know, they they played USC a couple of times and came out and said, we don't think Arizona is our biggest rival because we kick your asses all the time. We think it's USC. And I remember hearing that I'm thinking I couldn't really argue with that. I mean, you remember that or were you here for that? I don't. I don't remember hearing hearing that about the rivalry.
I mean I remember I remember from a very young age hating Frank Kush Yeah yeah, and uh and enjoying the mess he got himself into when he when he slapped around his kicker. But but but the point being though, that that ASU Arizona was making a bigger deal of the rivalry than a SU was because A he thought we were we weren't worth the time, and they
wanted a bigger arrival. And and that I feel like that the same kind has happened between Arizona and a s U basketball where Arizona pretty much every fan you asked is going to say, I think U c l A is a big arrival because a s U so often isn't very good, isn't good? Right? But the thing is is, But the thing is is a s U still beats us from time to time, right, so do other teams.
And that's a because you and I as fans, we you know, we hate losing to a SU. I lookt this way, I'd rather lose to U c l A than a s U because they most of the time U c l A is pretty good. And you think a s U doesn't deserve to be shouldn't you shouldn't beating in Arizona and basketball? Ever, don don let me give you there's hold on before you say that. Don you're Tommy Gooyd. I'm asking you the question, what do you what do you make of the deep the rivalry, mister coach? Tell me your answer.
Well, we've had We've had a lot of a lot of sick sass against them recently and historically. It's always a fun game to play. Coach, Bobby and I are friends. We're friendly between us, so you know that's that's always a good time to get together with your friends, and and and and and get and get a game in. You know, I understand what he said. I don't like it. I know, guys, guys, I'm a part of the class. Now, I'm a part of the class.
What Tommy say, Donnie say? But but talking talking about the rivalry, guys, my grandson is is gonna be is in the horse show up in Scottsdale, in the Arabian Horse Show up there. We're going up there Saturday morning, and I back the A when I go up there. When I go up there, where I would my Arizona stuff. Good, good on you. The same as when I go traveling, when I go to
California, my travel where is Arizona when I go that way? Well, I had a three year stretch in football when I didn't wear it up there, though, I will tell you that just I never not wear it when I go. You're a better fan than me, Yeah, okay, I just I just like the to and fro. Yeah, yeah, And it's good and it's it's usually fun. It's usually fun. Yeah, all right, don thanks a bunch, man, I'll see you. Take care. Guys. You know I didn't have a problem with you know, with what
because he was basically the same win. Look, Tommy's to hint. I think, to Tommy, everybody's arrival and you're just trying to win games. That's what you're trying to do. And you know his approach is to not make one game bigger than the next. And that's what most coaches do, even though they know their guys. I mean, he said at the top, I know the guys are probably thinking about it. They're thinking about it, you know, but you know it is what it is. So I
didn't have a problem with anything that he did or said there. Yeah, I mean he's not lying. I mean he's being real about it. You know. Of course, of course, if you if your buddy is on the other side, buddy might be even too much friendly to each other. They know each other, right, Okay, you want to beat them, of course, And then that's what he said. He's still gonna win, he's not going to lose. I just don't know how anybody could be friends
with Bobby Hurley. I'm sorry that was that was me. Kyle Dodd's going to be yelling at us about that tomorrow if you're you know, look, I'm I'm you know, it's I'm still mixed about whether or not I think Bobby Hurley's been a good coach, because he's been good coach at times and then there's other times he's just been terrible. Well he hasn't been his brother, No, he's not his brother. But you know what, but you know, yukon a s U, you know where you gonna who's got the
players right? So I don't know, let's take this call. You're on the air and eye on the ball. How's it going today, what's up,
Brian. I don't think they're you know, the rivalry stuff. And I understand what he's saying because he hasn't been around Arizona that much, you know, three years, and I mean he understands there's a rival between as U and U of A. But I think what he's trying to say is that game is one game, and we need to win it, right, and then we need to move on to the next game and win that game and then move on to the next game. In other sports, I think
football is probably the biggest rivalry between the two schools, not basketball. Oh yeah, for the reason you said too that ESU has not been very good at basketball and so yeah, and neither one of us have been that great in football either or something true. So you can have a rivalry when both teams think. Yeah, all you have to do is ask here, in the Arizona basketball fan, I have two tickets. I have a ticket to a UCLA game, and I have a ticket to an ASU game. Which
one would you rather have? Ucla? Yeah, most people are going to say UCLA. I agree, right, right, And I understand that completely. And you know, it's it's it's really tough, you know. I mean for the people who've been around for fifty years or so watching areas on
the sports. Like you said, there was no rivalry back and I mean we had, of course, we wanted to beat a issue back in the seventies, but it wasn't much of a rivalry there beating the crap out of us all the time, exactly, and and you know, and then it changed, and then we got really good and they weren't. And then they got good again and we weren't, and we got good and they weren't. So it just goes, you know, back and forth. But that to
me is more of a rivalry than basketball. Yeah, yeah, you know. And and also to go to a u of AA issue baseball game, that's a pretty good rivalry there. Well, there be some bad things that have happened in those games, oh yeah. I mean, even even when either team is that good, right, it's a good rivalry game to go to. If a band wants to go to a rivalry game, go to
that. Go to that, correct, man, some of those All right, right, thanks a much, man, talk to you, Okay, A good call, bro, Yeah, good call to Yeah, No, look, and everybody's got their own opinion on on on the rivalries where you
know where they are. But you know, I've I've always because even as Brian said, you know, it took a while fare you know, in the seventies sometimes seventies, you know, AC was way better than Arizona for the most part during the during those times and even into the into the PAC twelve years, right into the whacking in the PAC twelve years and Arizona came up. I think the seventies sixteen was the team that Bob Elliott and they got to the Elite eight and all that kind of stuff. That team was,
you know, was fred Stones' best team and was really good. But at that time, as you had it had it on Arizona pretty much in
all the sports, baseball even baseball. You know what a bunch of national championship was better coaches, better what what I think it had more to do with, you know, fan base and Phoenix and you know, you know they they were athletically, they were they were a better school because they were just a bigger school and and had the and had the players and you know, Frank Cuk and a lot of it had to do with Frank Cush the pro the football program was so good, you know, even though it was
in the wack, was so good that it attracted athletes from you know, the other sports, just like basketball does you know for Arizona, they were just really good and they were a bit better than Arizona, and it was like they were bigger, the bigger city, the bigger university of tih the TI turn in the early eighties when Larry Smith got here and when Luke got here, who got here not quite at the same time, but you know, like like like Larry Smith, Arizona got his ass kicked in Larry Smith's
first year, bad bad loss, like forty four to seven or something like that. Played closer in eighty one game up there, and then Arizona beat him in eighty two and it started that streak where they didn't lose for ten years. And that was the time. That was when Luke got here. He flipped the rivalry, so right, you know, in eight eighty three time, Frank's when that thing tells me coaching matters, Coaching does matter.
Coaching matters, and it mattered here. Arizona got the coaches one that made it a priority to beat those guys, and then two made it possible to beat those guys. Yeah, right, and ever since they've been kind of on the more winning trend or ruining side of it. Yeah. I think if you go back to eighty two, whatever the record is between Arizona and Arizona State, what's more in football that Arizona's got a lot more wins. But you have to count the ones before that when a SU would beat Arizona,
like you have to mention them, right, absolutely. Okay, Hey, good show today, all right, good stuff, tout Todd Holdhouse, thank you for being here, good luck with the getting your team to the national tournament. Thank you Tommy Lloyds for pishing off one of our listeners, and thank you Sich for the breaking news problem. All right, always a pleasure. Okay, Well, we'll be back tomorrow more preview of the SU game with Kyle Dodd, their color announcers, So be sure to come back tomorrow
