This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and jag and Zala sound Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services and Sure Your Most Prized Possessions kat z R two SA at iHeart Radio Station. Yet. Hey, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to Eye on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, you're Jagins. Also, we have Kevin in today for a Thursday afternoon show. Lot's going on a couple of press commences. I went to one and you listened to the other and I missed. Oh
yeah, but you, mister, you sleep, You're sleeping. I'm working, Steve, I'm working hard. Yeah, right, I'm working. I want to see video in the home in the homesketch of another another issue of the magazine. I want to see the video of that. Hey, you're in the magazine. So I want to report to the JEU Nudjet to the Tommy Lloyd press comments in preparation for watching. I'll have a question about something in the second What did Jed say? You know, well, it was
an elimable press conference. Both him and Brent Bevennables were there, so there were a lot of you know kind of softball questions. Jed talked about, you know, falling in love with with uh uh, the idea of being a coach or being involved in football when he was ten years old and he saw that festival with Michigan, I mean with the Penn State and Miami back in eighty seven. Remember that National Championship festival that they set up for a
national champion game. You know the Campbell Testy any Testaverdi and Penn State won that game. I remember fourteen ten. Miami was driving down for a game winning score and Penn State picked him off. You know where I watched that. I watched that with Kevin O'Neill in a hotel room in Corvallis getting ready to play Oregon State. It had to be January something, eighty seven, eighty eighty January. It was January eighty seven, Yeah, because that was
January seventh, I think it was eighty seven or eighty eight. I don't think it would have been eighty seven because I was a senior in college. Yeah, yeah, no, I remember that. I remember that game very well because I was in Tempe. I was in Albuquerque watching the game over break. No, okay, so jed, we'll talk about that more, but nothing really sure. The only thing of other substance, he said.
And it's funny because the answers weren't like as extended as we get. You know, when we talked to him and he was asked a really good question about you know, playing a bowl game in Texas, you know that's sort of going to be have to become a recruiting base for Arizona and whether he saw this as a sort of an opening the door to that, and he said, yeah, that you know, they're going into the Big Twelve.
They got you know, four teams that they're going to be playing that are in Texas, UH with with Baylor, Texas Tech, UH Houston and TCU, And so he thought, yeah, you know, this is a good a good way for us to kind of come and you know, start to get people to know us, and you know, we plan to use it in that way. So that was really it. You know, both coaches talked about how great the other team is and and that type of stuff.
So that was really really the gist of the of the press It was about a twenty minute press conference, and so that was what he guess and Tommy Tommy, you talked a lot. Obviously they play Wisconsin. So I'm gonna I'm gonna throw this at you because Bruce probably Bruce and I probably write the same story given that we covered the team back when Sean was here and Lute was here. Uh so let's I'm gonna throw. No. No, I'm not gonna throw any teams that you I don't want to buy a shoe.
Arizona's most hated teams outside the conference. No, no, altogether, altogether. Give me the top four. I think you start with EU c l A Okay, and I don't there's no right or wrong answer, right. I think you start with U C l A. I think Oregon has become one of those I don't think it's a SU because they beat as like a drum and so that people don't even think about them. And then I think you go to a team like Duke and then probably Wisconsin Oregon. You know
that's a that's a I would never never I think. I think. I think. I think Arizona fan hates that Oregon has gotten all this notoriety like they're really good, they did get to a Final four, and that they feel like it's all because they got all this money from UH from UH Nike, right, and so they kind of feel like they haven't earned it and they just want to kick their asses all the time. See I don't I don't see that. But that's fine, that's your missed. So you mentioned
Duke. I think maybe it's gonna be Duke Bruce, and we were kind of just astually. Duke, you said, who's your third one? I had you c l you see number one? You selling number one? That's without question, Duke, maybe too. The fourth one was who fourth?
Oh? You know not? Well, okay, if you can say Illinois, that doesn't I was gonna say youn LB back in the day, but back in our day, yes, in fact, that might have been number one or two or you know they were right up there with U c l A back in the Lady and going to and and you know U n l V, you know, eliminated one of the all time favorite teams. H No, okay, So who's your fourth one? I had? I had you c l A uh Oregon in Wiscon. Yeah, No, I think
that's the Oregon one. I'll argue with you, but I get it. Let me move Wisconsin kind of ahead of Oregon because of those two games. But then you got, you know, in in that first bat you got you got you know, you got Oregon. You've got uh U n l V. Only the people like us would know around and the hatred between loot and and and Tarkanian before that, I got settled. Yeah, no question, okay. So so I asked, I asked Tommy if he was aware of the history, and he says, yeah, okay, yeah, but
not really, you know, blah blah blah. And I did mention the history beyond the short time and and he didn't know the shot time because Arizona played Wisconsin in two thousand, if you remember, and he got beat. They got beat number one as a number overall seed in that great Wisconsin was an eights right, and they went to the final four eventually, but Tony Bennett was the coach, the dad of Bennett, and so people forget about
that. That was twenty three years ago, and that kind of started because it was a It was a heck of a game in the fifties slowed Arizona
down. Lorden Woods got had been hurt in her with his back issues, so no one and he didn't he didn't remember that because he didn't know that, but obviously the Shawn time it was very well documated staying yeah, because you know, I mean, and you know, think of where Arizona might be still to be the coach, right had he got into one of those final four, either one of those or the one when they beat Duke in twenty eleven. Well, yeah, no doubt, but I think and again
it goes back to what I said yesterday. I just you know, Arizona fan has got to realize that this is going to make him feel better about those two lots if they be Wisconsin down here. Yeah, no question, I want to probably write that story. I probably have to mention that just to give him some context. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Can I throw something out you guys real quick? What did you know the all time record between the Badgers and the wildcout I think Wisconsin has them, they do,
but what's the record? It's not big five to five to four something that it couldn't be that many five and two, five and two and two and their four and one since two thousand. Yeah, no, there was a Wisconsin Zona because of the style of play, style of play, and again, Arizona doesn't play well as an underdog, you know, as a favorite. And Wisconsin. I think that in fourteen fourteen, Arizona had to be
a favorite. In fifteen they was probably even, yeah, because there was almost a one or two on and but the Wisconsin games are not are not are not to upsets because Wisconsin was fantastic, were really good. Well, they're the ones that beat that undefeated team in the final four, right right, yeah, Sam Decker, and I knew I had the Sam half of that. I remember in the in the first the first time they played Wisconsin was Sam Decker who killed them. No, no, he was the second
one and the second one, second one, Cominskin the first one. Okay, I remember those two guys in those two games, no question. In fact, when when in Sean's departure, call him, I mentioned those two games and Sam was Sam was going off and crazy and he was throwing behind uside down and made his faces and he looked at Sam like, what can we do? We can't we can't stop him, we can't do anything about it. And I mentioned that face how he looked like, you know,
my dog had just died. Yeah, and a lot of fans dogs that it was upset. Well, if you remember after he lost that game, I think he was that game or that that that weekend, he came back and he says, if you don't like what we're doing, becoming issue fans? It was he went on Twitter and he was best and he says, if you guys, because he felt that he don't remember that he felt that heat, if you guys don't like what we're doing, you guys don't have
to be fans. Oh I do, I do remember that, And yes, never mind, I do, I do remember, because you rarely be an how we're going about things, that's right. But because he'd been to three Elite eights and what five years right then, he just couldn't get over that. Over the ye. So Wisconsin comes to town and they're pretty good. They're pretty good, well we you know, looking up their schedule. I mean, I think I think people start, what do you tell me?
Had said you had just said you saw on Twitter obviously that this is the best team that Oh yeah, Tommy said this is the best team they faced this year, which I think there was a there was some stuff in the face of of Duke of Michigan State. But then you look at it and and well Wisconsin got off to a one and two start. They played, uh, they lost to Tennessee and they lost to Providence, and probably
the Tennessee game. Okay, Tennessee is ranked ninth, but then you lose a Providence and they're one and two and you're kind of like, okay, they're not going to be that good. Well, they reeled off five straight wins since then, including number twenty four Virginia, Number nine Marquette on Saturday. I mean, number two Marquette on Saturday. Who was you know, just they're the ones that had beaten Purdue and they're the reason why Arizona was
number one, right, and then they knocked off the Big Ten. Started their conference season night before last, and they be in Michigan State at Michigan State. So they're coming in, you know, on a stretch of five wins in a row, and the last two were pretty impressive. Sure, the one thing that Arizona has it's here. It's said to be a sold out, sold out game, but aren't. Most of my almost were.
I guess they're not because of the there's tickets available. Maybe because well it's probably you're you're you're right, and there's tickets available, there's next spectation like last the last game, the game on Saturday. They they reported that the attendance of the salad there were some empty seats and there were a bunch of them, a bunch particularly up in the upper deck and in the zone a zoo. So should be a good game. It should be fun. I
think, I you know, I think the Arizona fans will come. We'll make it get that sort of buzz feeling that we talked about the one fifteen games with the middle of the afternoon. It's on esp IN and and I think it's gonna be uh, you know something where you know the fans will be a little more into this. Yes, and you'd like to think that the students will will fill up their their piece of it. It's their last game before they go to before they go to break, and their tickets start
getting sold to the general club. Right, Okay, so that'll be fun. We got the jet thing covered. That's gonna happen. What's it a sixth at twenty one days Harbor Day? Yeah, okay, So the game is about is a football game on a Friday or Saturday twenty eighth. The twenty eighth is a Friday night. When a Thursday nights a week from three weeks from tuesday is the twenty six you're right, you're right, Yeah, three weeks from tonight, So three weeks from today, you know there's gonna
be you know, there's gonna be there. We're gonna get to some build up of that. You know, they're still holding there all all the you know, we just announced our matchup press conferences and that's what the thing was. Which Jet had a coat and tie on because it was it was streamline, Okay, it was on it was on YouTube. Yeah, well it's I don't know if I've ever seen him in the day he got hired. I don't even remember that. I don't remember that it was a It was
a Zoom press conference. You had come on Zoom was part of my pajamas, and you know, I was working a basketball game and it must have been a men's game. But I'm sitting there with my iPad on trying to trying to hear it while also trying to do stats in the game. I'm like, I wanted to find out who the hell was this guy that they hired that none of us had ever heard. Well, this guy that has
broughttom to this. Yeah, to the point where right now again, you know, again having fun talking about you know, the number one basketball team in the country, you know, you know, one of the top Bowl games outside of the New York Good to be at. It's fun to be able to talk about this right now. Yeah, no question. You have a game tonight. To you have a game, you're going home. I had some business to have been for a while, I had, so I did. I didn't. I didn't wear my Arizona gear to my meeting this
morning, but I do have a quarter zip in the card. I'll have some rat on tonight at the game. But it's an Arizona women taking on UC San Diego. But they're also they're also gearing up for they've got a game next week. They've got Texas coming down. Oh yeah, so they just picked the crap out of Long Beach State. I didn't realize they were pretty good. Yeah, Texas been pretty good. Number five. Yeah, so they got Texas coming in on Wednesday. So on Tuesday, we're gonna
have my Enaji on the show. Yeah, you've already scheduled her, so to talk about that game coming up. It's a Wednesday night game at seven o'clock A McHale. That should be a good one. And today before we forget, we have Doug Faff coming in about five minutes talking about the nineteen eighty nine game Oklahoma, what he remembers. Obviously he was one of the stars back then, stars on a six point game. And then we're gonna get a hold of, hopefully today, Glenn Parker after missing him yesterday.
So we'll have a lot of Oklahoma stuff reminiscing going back before. Before we leave this, Texas is tenant. Oh yeah, no, they're running number five. You remember just three four years ago Arizona went to Texas and one and then you got to realize, oh, these guys can be really good. I think. Wasn't that the final four year Yeah? I think so, I think so so yeah, yeah, no, Look how the fortunes are turned. Man. They they be long beach stayed by forty four.
Yeah, and I know that coach bon Messini was out there because there was a they beat They beat Yukon. Oh yeah, yeah, the Yukon is not the same team that used to be. They beat as U by forty two. You contact some injury troubles the last couple of years that one guard able to get record on the court. At the same time, I don't think, yeah, all right, Uh okay, We're gonna uh try and get ahold of Glenn Parker. Hopefully he's ready for us. Well, excuse
me, Doug Faff, I was looking at yesterday's schedule. Doug Faff coming up and we'll reminisce about that Oklahoma game where he hit the game winner.

I'm Steve Barbera. He's jacin Zawaz. Now on the phone, we have Doug Fat, one of the many heroes of p nineteen eighty nine, a win over Oklahoma. Doug, how are you? I'm doing great. Steve and Jay, how
you guys doing. We're doing fine, doing fine. Thirty five years ago? How many in the in the thirty five years, how many times have you seen the highlight of your kick? You know, I think I've seen it more in the last seventy two hours than I've seen in the previous thirty five years, to be honest with yet. So I'm pretty happy that he still basically Arizona and Oklahoma playing in the Alamo Bowl, because the video has
resurfaced and it's been a long time since I've seen it. Did you did you ever go up to Bruce Larson and say, what the hell are you saying? Missed it? You know, because you had it? And he even waited a little bit, and then he goes, missed it? Well, Jay, I was brought up to respect your elders, so Bruce is a legend. I didn't want to say anything, but yeah, it is kind of you know. I tend to kind of put it on mute so that way it doesn't come across well. To his credit, glug, God
bless him, he's now pasted. It barely cleared, right, It barely cleared, it did. And what I didn't know at the time, guys, was I had a groin injury. The entire senior season, and as the game wore on, I was lose more and more strength in my leg because it just wasn't healthy. And then you're you're kicking into the net to
get warmed up. And I didn't realize that. You know. Luckily that was like the third or fourth game of the season, and so you know, if it's you're right, if it would have been forty seven yards, I don't think I would have had it. Well, well, I will say, and with all due respect, you know, because I was you know, I was on the sideline, you know, watching the kick, and when you hit it, it was leaking oil pretty quickly, but it did. It looked good to me when you hit you know, when you
went it, just I knew it was going to be close. Yeah, well I didn't know that. You know, in pregame I could kick from fifty five easy, but I didn't realize three and a half four hours later, right, you know, that was about my my bax. So thankfully the offense got it to be only a forty yard field goal, because yeah, if it was a forty six or forty seven, I think we'd have a different outcome, right, Yeah, no, And those are the good
old days. Man, we both over you. I covered you for the Citizen and Jay for the Star. What do you what was the after effects? A great celebration outside of Dick Toomy trying to get you guys off the field so you wouldn't get a penalty. But how was life for you after? It was awesome the first time to experience, obviously, the the stadium being rushed by the entire you know, student body and all the season ticket
holders and everybody attending the game. I remember somebody came from the locker room to come grab me because I was I was still being carried throughout the field and coach told me, you know, our locker room for games used to be underneath the you know, the the what the south side hand. Yeah, he was trying to address the team and he's like, you know, where's Doug. Where's Doug? Where's Doug? So I kind of got roped into the locker room after being on the shield, I guess for ten minutes.
But it was it was a great feeling, great win for the program, and obviously it was a great win by everybody in our team. I mean our defense was phenomenal that night, only giving up three points to Oklahoma. It was the top five team in the country, and obviously our offense did what we had to do to get us a couple couple of field goals. You know how going through that game, you know it says the final
was six three, off was three three all the way through. But at some point in the game you had to start thinking, I'm gonna need I'm gonna need to kick a game winner, you know, to win this thing. And you know when did you when did you kind of start to think
that? And then how did you get ready for that? You know, Jay, honestly, I go into every game thinking that's what's going to have to happen, just because as a kicker, it's it's so much mental that everybody that you know plays soccer can kick a ball, but what can you do to kick a two two uprights with you know, potentially all the pressure on you. So I got to go into every game thinking that's going to
be the outcome. And so by doing that, when it does happen, you know, I've practiced it over and over in my mind so many times that it's all it is to me is just go out there and do the same kick I do one hundred times every week. So you know, that's that's how I approached every game. It's funny because I was just going to ask you and I don't know if you remember your lead or your story chain,
are you remembering very vividly? And it had something to do with that where it was like all Doug Doug Faff had to do was imagine, imagine, imagine, imagine that the ball was going to go through that. That's what you do, you think about the ball going through every time? One hundred percent. I mean, I mean, if if you look back and if there were some old photos Mike cow used to have one hundred percent on it, and that was my mantra. That's what my expectation was, was
that I was going to be one hundred percent every game. And the visualization was really something that I focused on. And we'd go to the stadium Friday night before we go to the hotel and in the dark, my snapper, my holder and myself would go twenty five different places on the field and do imaginary kicks without a ball. And again it was all the mental preparation.
And in my senior year, I brought my holder and my kicker and my snapper out there as well, so Ken mcpeters and John Nice, they'd come out there with me for a half hour before we'd hop on the bus and go to the hotel. Now, correct me if I'm wrong. That was the first year that you had to kick without a tea, was it not? Or is it the year before? No, you're absolutely right. Yeah, my junior year we had the tea, and then h my senior year we were they took the tea away made us kick off the ground. So
uh, you know, it just like golf a little easier. It's a little easier to hit the ball on the tee than off the ground. But it just took some practice and after a while it was no big, no big difference. How hard was that adjustment though? The first week, Jay it was it was it was rough. I remember luck They told us after my junior season, so we had all spring to practice it. But I think the first time I went out and practiced it, I would have been
in a full team. I was just I was just kicking with some kickers and stuff. I think I probably would have hit their backs or their butt because I'd probably shanked like four out of fifteen that wouldn't have even got past the line of scrimmage as far as height. So it took about you know, three or four practice sessions to kind of just again change my muscle memory
on my swing and kicked the ball a little bit lower. And then after that, I mean, honestly, I don't even think it affected the distance you know on my kicks going off the ground and the purse off the tea. I mean, you just get used to it. So Jay and I talk about this every now, every now and again, especially this week. You did you win this game coming off a horrible game at Texas Tech. James Gray made you guys look bad and you're thinking, you go, you're
coming home to Oklahoma. It's his own. No, this is not going to be good having what we saw at Texas Tech. How was that week? You know? We we we played Oklahoma the year before in Norman, and if you remember that game, even though the score said it was twenty eight ten, personally, I think we we have physical Oklahoma. We were in the game. We just made a couple you know, poor plays that were you know, big swings. You know, we threw a pick six
when we had you know, goal to go. So that was a fourteen point swing. I missed the field goal I should have never missed. So there's three more points. And so you know, two plays. I mean, now we're talking. It's a toss up game. And so we we we had some confidence that it's like, look, you know, we we're
as good as they are. We will beat them, you know. And so I think maybe the loss of Texas Tech, I think we overlooked them in all candidness because the year before they lost all their stars Billy, Joe Tolliver, a couple of receivers that played in the NFL, and I think we just overlooked them because they weren't supposed to be that good. But we kind of introduced James Gray to the to the world. I think you ran for one hundred and eighty against us, but it was too changing. It
was it was too and change. Yeah, I think you still a lot, you still run, but yeah, yeah, you had a son. Actually that was a phenomenal running back in college too at UT. But I think it just woke us up and got us even more focused for the Oklahoma game. So, you know, by no means did we want to lose
Texas Tech. But you know, maybe there was a silver lining from from that loss when you went to Oklahoma the year before, because you know, you know, back in the day Arizona didn't get a chance to play you know, the Oklahomas in Ohio State's and all those. Was there any sort of a feeling of a mystique with these guys going to play them the first
time? Uh? You know, you guys were going to their place, you know, their stadium, their legendary stadium, which was kind of rickety, you know, Steve and I remember, but you know when the thought of playing Oklahoma going in then and then you know you had already seen him, so now you had him here and you felt more confident about it.
But what was it like going into the first game? You know, you're right they it was Barry Switzers last year that he coasted Oklahoma and they were still dominant, and you know, I think you had respect for Oklahoma. I don't think we feared him though, And that's why when we went out there and played, I mean we actually got the ball the opening drive. You know, I was forcunate enough to make make that field goal. So we had a three to nothing lead, and then if you remember Charles Thompson
was was their quarterback. We knocked him out of the game in the first half, and then I think they brought to Meal Holloway that was kind of overcoming an injury back in the game, and then they brought Thompson back in and then we knocked him out again, and you know, he had to leave via the ambulance. So we knew right then and there that wait a second, weren't just as good as these guys. They just got, you know, maybe a better reputation than we do. So you know, yeah,
it was it was. It was. We respected them, but we didn't fear them. It's funny you bring up those names because about three or four years later, in ninety three ninety four, I got the book The Life and Crimes of Oklahoma Football. I think Halloway is one that wrote the book because he was in trouble with the law. I think, well, Charles Thompson was the one that was in real big trouble, okay, so
maybe that was who wrote it. It was unbelievable. I mean, today it's kind of like commonplace, but back then, it was like, holy crap, these guys are what are they doing? Yeah, and that's the thing. I mean, they were always they were almost like the Miami Hurricanes of the late eighties and nineties. Before there was the Miami Hurricanes, and so I think Miami took it to maybe a new level. But yeah, they they definitely had some some characters and some stories and and they had a
lot of talent. But but yeah, we just we enjoyed the challenge because, like you said earlier, we didn't get a chance to play some of those teams. I mean, that's team in UCLA and Washington were dominant teams, and so you know, we would play against what we thought were some
of the best teams in the country. But you know, there's always that West Coast bias I think in the media, so you know, we wouldn't get you know, I don't think those teams would get the credit that they probably deserved nationally, like teams like Nebraska or Oklahoma or Michigan Ohio State get So let me ask you. I think I haven't talked to you in a little bit, but I think you're in Phoenix now, but you were in
Dallas for a long time, right or is that bro? No, you're correct, I live in Chandler, right, now for the last six years, but twenty years prior to that. Our family, I mean we lived in a suburb of Dallas and pretty much our three kids were all raised out there in Dallas. Let me go to the question, so you lived, you lived that type of football obviously in that conference. What what is Arizona
fans or Arizona going to have to deal with in that new conference. Yeah, I think it's going to change a little bit, just with the defection of UT and OU going to the SEC. But it's it's different. I mean tailgating in the West Coast and what the fans do on game day, I mean just just times that by ten and that gives you a perspective of what happens on game day. I mean they'll tailgate starting Friday, and you know those campuses that they allow them to tailgate for thirty six hours. So
the fan base is just rabid fans. They're crazy. It doesn't matter if your records two and nine or nine and two. They're going to support you regardless, but they definitely don't keep your around if if your records to and I you know, so, uh, it'll be fun. It'll be some new schools. I think you know, for u of a, it'll be it'll be great for all sports. But you know, I'm I'm a I'm kind of a history guy. I'm going to miss the pack R and Pac
twelve not being there anymore. You know, I'm not a big fan of kind of the the team realignment that we're having in college nowadays. I was going to ask you that, so you've answered that. But you know, the thing that I've been saying is that you know, with with you know, USC and Washington and Oregon out of the way and then going to the Big twelve with no Oklahoma and no Texas, that are's on a sort of in a position where it can actually possibly compete year in, year out.
Uh, what are your thoughts on that? No, I agree with you. I think you know, the trajectory that you know, the coach coaching staff has them on right now is fantastic. I mean, I think dead Fish and his staff is has exceeded all expectations, at least of mine and I'm sure almost everybody else. And if they continue, you know, to keep getting better, there's no reason why they can't step right into the Big
twelve next year and the you know, Big twelve champions in football. I think they have a great shout to do it obviously in basketball, and then you know, baseball is going to be fun too because those baseball programs out there are phenomenal as well. So you know, I'm looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to going to some universities that maybe I haven't been to. But yeah, I just you know, nil, that's a whole nother discussion point too. I mean that could be the wild card every year.
So keeping guys or losing guys. You know, your team can change pretty quickly. Sorry to tell you, Doug, you were born thirty five years too early. Yeah, I feel that too, Steve. I think all the things that we did when I was in college, you know, giving back to the community, speaking to schools and going to you know, facilities just to hopefully brighten somebody's day up. You know, we did that just because we wanted to pour back into the community. Now these now they they
get paid to do that stuff. So uh and they get paid to play on Saturday. So yeah, you know, I'm not crying over any spilled milk. I enjoyed my time there, you know, obviously, met my wife there, you know, so, I mean, the memories are phenomenal both football wives as well as just academically and personally. Right, right, right, you're doing well. You're doing well, Doug. I know that. Okay, thank you, Doug, appreciated, Doug. Thanks guys,

If you guys want to call in, please do five two oh four one six seventy four forty h Somebody said you didn't want to call in and talk to us about something about Oklahoma. All right, So that'll happen soon, So keep
an eye on that. I'm just I've just been admiring my writing because I've got the clip from that game here in front of me. And that doesn't shock you, don't, not in the slightest bit, not one iota. It just you know, it's a it's a story that you know you have to write it. During the game, you got, you cap it off at the end. I'm shocked that you got out of the business. You know. I'm kind of getting a little misty right here real thinking about that
night. I just remember it was hot, it was a good game. You want no fun, think part of the fun thing about this. I had spent that day Earlier in the day, we went down to the Gallas and just went to do some shopping and stuff like that. Came back, there was a time to get to get to the game. It was about six o'clock, seven o'clock. I didn't feel very good that night. Oh
because you were in no Gallas. Because we've been no Gallas. So maybe that's what makes the story go. You were kind of yeah inspired sixty three fifty thousand, nine thirty one. Yeah, it was. It was pretty big. I remember there's a lot of people there. Yeah, because you're not going to see Oklahoma, you're not gonna see the clock. Yeah. They weren't here. They've never been back. Yeah. Yeah, so this is this is pretty cool, you know, sitting here painting the picture for
the for the reader. Give me some tissue over the CRUs I was just well, we were saying, I really should have apologized to Doug because he kicks the game winner. And then Glenn Parker was in my lead. I was gonna say, you buried the lead. I did it. Did it took it took It took four paragraphs to get to the fact that Doug was winning kick to Lenny Field. If I'm a professor, you're getting a C on that, you know. But Glenn was a great quote and he was
the whole time. Remember the first because we met him the year before and like who is it? And he remember he looked like a biker, like a Hell's Angels guy. Then it turns out he was some softy who had been hanging out on the beach and didn't even want to play for him. No, so it was him the guys you remember him, John Fina Quotables. Uh, Singleton's the Singletons, Well, yeah, Singletons. Donny I think Donny Salem was out there. God because very much, so very much.
That was a scary dude. He's still he's in Poenis. He's a teacher, big dude, He's not as big as he was. He was a scary scary dude. Let's take this call. Hi, you're on the air and I on the ball. How you doing? Jay Good? Who's that? This is Ricky rick? How were you So you texted me and you were going to say something. Yeah, that that game, it was just I remember the game vividly because I shut down our patio furniture store a couple hours early, and I said, we're going to the football game.
So I called my wife at the time and I said, let's just go to the game. So we show up and they only have tickets left in the red section. So we get into the red section and all of a sudden, I'm looking around and we're in the middle of Oklahoma fans. Okay, that's the first So we're about twenty rows up and the row immediately in front and two seats over is Berry Switzer. Yep, he was at the game, and oh yeah, he was at the game. And of course
Barbara looks around. She says, I want one of those diamond rings. I mean, I felt like we were a diamond mine with all the golden I means these ladies were wearing. But of course the game was a heck of a game. I think it was like six nothing, not six to three, and but very swifter. And during the game, you know, we chat a little bit, nothing, nothing important. But after the game
and after that field goal, he turned around stuck his hand out. Great football, come back to Oklahoma. His Barber's sister lives in Moore, Oklahoma, which is right around the corner of university there. And but the fans that was a first class, very swift, was just first class gentlemen. And the fans were cool, and we all, you know, at it up a little bit, and of course I had to behave myself a little
bit more than usual. But it was what a football game, and it just it was just amazing to just sit there mark all these Oklahoma fans and we lived to tell about it. Yeah, yeah, no, that's one of the games you'll remember yeah, oh yeah, yeah, ok thanks Rick. All right, gentlemen, a good day, Thank you, thanks for the call. You know, it is one of the ones that sticks out for me, I know for you. I mean, you've governed you,
you covered basketball for so long. I'll give you another one. I'll give you another one because you were there too that game, the Oregon game when Musgrave got stuck at the one half yard line by Daryl Lewis. I was okay, so that happened right in front of me. Yeah, that gave me chills because I was right there on the corner. That game, the Syracuse when Syracuse beat the crap out of Arizona and Hawaii. Yeah. Well
yeah, we've talked about. You see the U c l A game sticks out to me over there, No, the one here where Eldred David al Oh yeah yeah, what about the USC game over there? There was only one I Will Colliseum that was covered nineteen ninety. That eighty nine was my last Okay, okay, okay. I got to see Arizona get the cap kicked out of it firsthand by Rodney p Oh. Yeah, you know, and then Aman came here. Aman came here and beat the crap out of
them once but you know it was again. You know certain things that stick out, and from a football standpoint, this was. This was a huge upset. Take this call another one hired on the air and I on the ball. How's it going today? What's not much? Hey? I just want to tell people that if you're looking for a very good Christmas gift for someone, for someone, hopefully a man, whatever, get Stay's book.
Thank you? Are we Facebook friends? I'm just curious. No, I don't do that well because well, let me just say this, because I did that today. I posted something. If you haven't picked up the book, this would be a great easy I get. It's a fabulous book. Really, I mean, if you're a CRU Arizona fan, or even if you just want to know about the lude Olsen times and what kind of a person he was and a coach she was, it's a great book to read.
And it's it's it's not like it's a real difficult to read it or it drags. It does not drag that you know, each chapter is is different the whole time. Yeah, no, thank you very much. I'm glad you read it. It's an easy read too, I take you about well, Yes, put in the put in the restroom, put in the bathroom in a chapter at a time. Yeah, yeah, it's easy. Yeah, and and there's stuff you know, you know, for Jade that would be like one day in the bathroom pretty much. But thank you for
the for thedorsement. Yeah, it probably took you not too long. And then every story is different because everybody has a different feel of right, you know. And it just wasn't about basketball. It was it was nice to see about him as a person, right right as you got older, as you got older, as we all know, uh, he became close friends with all the players, because you can't. You can't be a player a friend of the players when you're the coach. No, no, unfortunately,
fortunately you can't. But uh, it's just nice to see the respect shown by the players him, you know, years after the after they left, and basically the lessons of life that they learned from him. Right, let me ask you just are curiousity, I know, we have four minutes. What was the most rememberable chapter? I like the Steve Kerwin mm hmm. And I mean it was just so many, It's so many of them that
were really good. Did I like the one where I came in and named the other coach, oh Montgomery. Yes, that was that was that was terrific because you know they were you know, they were rivals in the conference. You know, when he was the Stanford for a long time, you know, it wasn't quite the same when he went to Hell. Yeah, yeah, real question. You know, do you remember the the Todd Walsh one. He was the last one in the book. Yes, he had no money, He had zero money, and he went to he went to
go become a manager. He had to sit in line and blah blah blah. And and now he turned into this guy, uh you know, this broadcaster, and he thanks everything to you who brought him in, brought you know, you know, people don't realize that, you know, Todd waltsh is back here on Channel thirteen. I think it was, yeah, you know, back in the eighties, right, and and he was really good. And you know I see him all the time. We go to Phoenix a lot, and I see him up, I see him on you know,
you hear the still on the radio, see him on TV. He's great, right right, yeah, but you know he you know, he was and he had a lot of great things, and everybody had great things to say about him. Yeah, right, No, he's a good dude. He's good dude. Thank you for you know, if if someone if you want something good, it's not an expensive gift and it's something that d be very enjoyable, like you, just pass it through the family, right right, No, thank you. They can reach me too, just reach
me on Facebook or email me and that'd be great. Thanks for the call. I appreciate it. Okay, thanks man, Bryan. So let me if I could show a quick story. I think I may have said it already with Todd Walsh his story. So he gets let go by. Remember he had a controversy with the Phoenix Cardinals. He's bad mouth Midwell. So he lost his job and he needed to get another job. And he's had this name and he comes to Lou and says, can you can you help
me find a job? Yeah again, I'm gonna put you as a reference. So he applied for Fox or I can't remember what it was, just whatever. So he applied for this job and he went for an interview and the guy who interviewed said, could you tell this guy lude Olsen to stop calling me? I think you're doing pretty good. But he calls me all the time, don't you that's too funny. But you know Todd was that
you know, Todd was such a likable guy. Yeah, right, you wanted you know, I could see how Lot would have just wanted, you know, give him a hand. Right. Luke got pissed at him for leaving, for leaving the program because he went he went to a PENI right, he says, why did you leave? He says, well, I had to go, you know, I had to spread my wings. Yeah, exactly, I should get to back on. Yeah, he was good.
Well there's it's the fox thing is gone and Batlets is gone. Yeah, you know what you wonder what all those guys are going to do, you know? And then they got all the Bret Hanson is no longer there, yeah, because of belly right, right, because too bad? All right? Well, uh that's a god. That was a quick first hour again, a lot of cool stuff, right, But we'll have Lynn Parker coming up at about four twenty Surprising break News coming back with some breaking news
with surprising local breaking news. Yep, yep, it's very surprising local breaking news. And then we'll take your calls in the last segment five zero four, one, six stick around for all of that
