This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jakin Zalis on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen, powered by Nova Insurance Services. Hey sure, your most prized possessions, kat z R two, SAG and iHeart Radio Station. Hey, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to I on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. He's Jakin's os. Got a guy Jason in today for another day of sports time. He's almost done. Yes, our guys thing and go to school and stuff. He does. He'd rather

stay here here. We'll see him around. He's around everywhere. Yeah, walk in the halls of the big chempus see him, I see him, Yeah, asking those tough questions. Yeah yeah, the swallow year before the real world hits. And let me tell you, Jacksons, it sucks out here, so I've heard alright, alright times. Are you guys even even

worse? Jason? Yeah, you end up looking like us, just worse, not so much looking at us. Uh yeah, yeah, but I'm looking for the word that disgruntled, but very gritty, very what's the word jade? It's uh jaded, jaded, You're jaded. I'm not jaded. You're jaded. Certain things, you're jaded. Don't luve me in with with you a bunch of jaded dudes over there. Man, you know what, I got out of the racket long and early enough not get jaded. Like. No, but you're you're a fan who's jaded. Well, you might

call me this disillusional. Okay, delusional, not disillusional delusional, but I'm I don't know, maybe sometimes sometimes Okay, Well, you can't be kind of pregnant. No, that's true. So you're kind of you can be a little delusional and not a lot to los okayisional some things and others. Let's move on from this. Good to see everybody. Uh, let's talk about we have a pretty good show today. We can you find a grooder?

Where did you find well? Uh? As we were doing our breaking news yesterday and I did, I didn't want to break it because we were doing other stuff. But Jack Jack right former you know, our buddy the bull, former guy Arizon Daily Star. Guy uh worked and worked in covering a lot of sports in Phoenix, works it now he's he's retired. So we worked summers as the official scorekeeper for the Colorado Rockies, which UH we

have fun with. But Jacksonville buddy of ours, and he works. He does some writing for website called sportsbetting time dot com and he came out with a PAC twelfth preview yesterday. Yeah, so we're actually gonna talk football today, Steve, Well we are again. Well, you know, get used to it, man, this is this is what we're doing now for a while. Yeah, but I'll be kind of good. We're gonna talk some talk some actual football with Did you see the list or you're gonna ask about

the list? His? Uh? Well he he he only picked. He just picked a conference champion. He didn't like pick the standings and uh and uh, you're not gonna be happy with this conference champion? And then, uh, well you can pick whoever you want. I know who's gonna win it. This Okay, maybe you're not gonna you're gonna do let me say different. You're gonna disagree with this conference. It's gonna pick it. And that's fine because a lot of people are picking him right, and I'm okay

with that just doesn't mean it's right. I've seen a lot of people be wronging before. Yeah. Yeah, so I've been wrong too. And and as as it appears that Phil Mickelson was wrong about a billion times. But that's that's a story for another time. I don't know if you picked that up for breaking. We're gonna have to talk about it, okay. And then at four fifteen you got Pete Willings. You joined us today? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I wanted to talk to him. He's coming for

the camp obviously in a couple of weeks. But specifically he was around when the Pac twelve was, when Averzonna took over the Pack twelve kind of in the basketball just his thoughts on it's getting out of it now and just you know, reminiscing about the good old days. Yeah, yeah, I was. I was doing some stuff over at Kvaway there. They're new general managers. Guy who back in the day, he worked at Kazya z and uh did a lot of stuff, you know, early on when Luke got here.

Remind me that was the chanel back in the day, Okay, in the day, and so that's where games you caught most games. What is it? How long ago was it? His name is Peter, Peter O'Brien be. He's now the general manager. Is he an older guy? Can must be? He's he's probably because let us maybe maybe he's around our age or maybe a little young because Bill Bill what's his name was there for he replaced him. Yeah, okay, he's only been here about two years.

Okay, so you know they're they're having their seventy seventieth anniversary, So I'm going to story on that. So totally. I walked in. He's got all this you know, basketball memorabilia on this credenza and he was explaining that, you know, you know when he was here, when Luke got here, and you know, the Ludelson Show was on that channel. That's what you got to do. A lot of that No No clumb Trea, some

cool vintage stuff. Yeah, yeah, okay, great, great, great, So yeah, I wanted to invite Pete over to talk about all this stuff. Pizza one of those great guys, one of the great guys. Yeah, he always have a lot of fun with him too. His legs, we'll ask, well, ask because he's been improving and he's a I think he's still a probation guy in California. You don't want to miss a Pete the dude still even with a bad leg. I'm not taking him on,

Dude, he's he could kick my ass with one leg. Do you remember you remember when Luke had his fantasy, his return of guys twenty years ago, it was and old guys and you guys, he was like still the star player. Yeah, well was that was at the time Tilbert showed up in deck shapes and played basketball. Yeah, probably right, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah. And Pete takes the serious man. Yeah,

I'm sure he does. You know, I bet he's still competes hard, even Eddie Smith, because those guys were bulldogs and that's what made them.

That's what made them great, you know at Arizona, and that's what all you know, build ariz On. It just the the attitude and brother we talked about, you know, had it not been for herm Harris and and those dudes money and and those guys wrap us up this uh, that phase kind of started the building box man, and then you got the next building blocks of Williams and Pitty Smith, those dudes, A Brock Bronk Horse, that whole group, the guys that have to deal with the previous coach.

Bronk was one of those guys. He's stuck around. He stuck around. Oh no, it's always great to talk to Pete. So, yeah, I see how he's doing. Okay, I'm interested to see what the bull says about the PAC twelve where Arizona lands and you already gave it away where But but I'm fine because it's gonna be a fun fun Do they have odds but draft king out odds on the winners and the losers of the I believe

they do that. And actually Sports Betting Time Sports Betting Dime has odds uh for the champions for the champion, simple okay, they got now Jack hit who he thinks is gonna win is not? Is not? This list? Sports Betting Dime has usc is the favorite at plus two hundred, so you see, yeah plus two hundred. Who do you think is next? Oregon? Yeah? Or see that's what three twenty okay and then Washington? Yeah thirty forty If I were you, If I were you, because you kind

of strong about it. What twenty bucks on the man, I might do that. Yeh three and a half to one, uh utah, five fifty. Seeing that's crazy champ with the quarterback back and their coach back and everything else, and they know how to win. That's crazy they do. Why do you think they're they're so low or lower than because they're Utah, they're not brand, right, yeah right, and they always come through. I mean they always like you know, yeah, they're not a brand, but

they'll kick your ass. Yeah, yeah, you guy, even like the coach they're they're holding you. No, I wouldn't even you can pay, you don't even to make him mad. I wouldn't even making those UFC you know, here's a lot of money. No, he would great. Yeah. So then you got UCLA at one thousand, so it goes from five fifty to one thousand, Oregon State twelve hundred, Washington State six thousand. Then you got the Arizona Wildcats that's there and Cal Arizona Wildcats. Caw,

how could they be coupled with Cal? A team that's the beat the hell out of Arizona last year? Who's below though? Who's below? Then you at a SU eleven thousand, Colorado fifteen thousand, Okay, Stanford twenty five, so twelve eleven ten, they're about eight or nine and then time for eight. Cal's not very sexy. Come on, do they play him? No, they don't play them. They don't play Cal. Don't play don't play cal don't play. They wish they would have played. I think I'd

rather have Stanford. Yeah, no, no, no, I'm talking about the games that we're talking about, Oregon State in Leshning State, those two because they have to. They gotta get one of those. They gotta get one of those unless they do something crazy like go beat, go beat Mississippi State or something. Yeah, do you play you Chile? Yes, they could pull that one off too. Yeah. They got used La here.

Let me ask you. We have six minutes and we lost Chicken Jail the jack UCLA's comment, not Usila that we used to remember and these guys, but that's a long time ago. I got here when he was here. But Steve, they've always still recruited really well, and so he just can't. What's the deal. They just can't do things now now? In you know, in the in the early nineties, they were still pretty good. Remember that was that was around that time. Ninety three and ninety eight Arizona's

two best teams UCLA one League both of those years. Couldn't bet either one of those teams. But it's it's kind of like it's definitely a step sister or some brother two up. Yeah, yeah, they got, they got, They got dragged through the Big ten. They got dragged through the Big ten. You had a buddy of mine knows some of UCLA stuff. I said, how did you guys let that happen? He said, he said, our chancellor and an athletic director had no ways wouldn't fight USC on this.

Yeah, well, it's kind of like there's their big brother or whatever in an Arizona and Arizona state. Yeah, okay, you want to go, Well, okay, I guess so we must. But you can argue, you can argue that the border regents, you know, may have had a lot to do it here, may have had a lot to do with a su having to go, or as the border regents in in LA did not keep UCLA from going. Yeah, well, to their point, to their good point is they'd be in the wind right now had they not gone,

Yeah, you know, they'd be where were we gonna go? No, I disagree the pack would have held together with those two teams staying with UCLA stating in La. Yeah, and if you if if us he had left, Okay, UCLA leaves USC, leaves u C LA states and then you go get San Diego State. That's still a pretty good league. They say they would have gotten they would have gotten a better a better deal with

the same deal, they would have gotten a better deal. Well, you better played a lot of each sun because I played the fifty fifty raffle at the Diamondbacks scheme last night. Bucks. No, no, no, but it would have won. Seventeen thousand didn't come close. Yeah, So my point is we'll never know, well, never never know. I like your theory. I don't know if I believe it, but I understand it. I don't know that they would have still would have gotten to the Big twelve

deal. But a big reason why they couldn't get a deal, Stevens, because they lost the alley market and Sandio State wasn't going to get them the alley market back. Well, let's also remember that nobody in all it gives a crap about him. That's that's what we know. But there's still a thing that says we got UCLA. You know, I think I think they still wo I think I think the PAC twelve lives. If UCLA stays Yeah, I don't know, I do even if Colorado took off, you better

write that book. You've better write that book in Colorado took off. Next time, Wilder will ask him, what do you think? Yeah? Yeah, not that he knows, but I don't. I don't I understand what you're saying. I don't know. I'm gonna text him and ask him, get his opinion. No, no, no, we'll get him on. Well, I'll remember this. I'm gonna ask him. No, I would we have the technology? Yeah? Apple deal worth twenty three millions? Okay, good, okay, cool, So we got three minutes. We're gonna

get Jay and Jack on here. Anything else going on? No? Fun game last night. Got to take my grandson into a game. It was very cool and he loved it. He did get scared. There was only one inning where he and he runs got scored. Dodgers had the bases loaded in the eighth. Uh, David probably gets the base hit, the crowd goes crazy, scared the crap out of the awake. Yeah, he was awake the whole time. It was scary because he didn't he didn't know.

We We debated, but we thought, you know, the place was half empty, so it didn't feel like we needed to. But then that one burst of sounding, he jumped it scared him, but he didn't. He was fine. How so it was half empty twenty two twenty three ish, Yeah, I bet, And how many of those were Dodgers fans? Twenty two h twenty three is especially on a sinking ship. They said, you know, the let's go Dodgers. Chance started in the diamond bad. They

could not stop it. They could not get a chance. That's dip in the pool. Uh no, no, no he yet, no homers, no nothing. Yeah, so it was yeah, no they didn't they didn't go jump in the pool. It was a two nothing game went really fast. Both pitchers pitched really well. Although the Diamondbacks pitcher his last name Kellie out of you know, when he came off the he came off the mound with an injury, so he he left suddenly. So I hadn't heard what

what what happened. But David Pralti, who was a dime a long time diamond Back and ended up on the Dodgers, and he got the two runs single to win the game. So a little justice there as well. So he got he got him back a little bit, kind of stuck it in the side. But the Dodgers are you know, they got I think they're five games up now. The diamond Backs continue to slipt and been horrible,

and they've been terrible. They're like a have a terrible record after the break and the Dodgers they think are sixteen and eight after the break or something like that. So it was fun, you know, kind of a uh, you know, I hate to be a jerk about this, but kind of a jury place. There's no life to the to the ballpark. You know. It was full of Dodger fans, not not a lot of excitement in the park. Not a lot of excitement, you know, people walk around

the concourses and stuff like that. But it was fun to go see a Dodger game. And uh, that'll probably be myen Dodging for the summer. Okay, No, I agree, it's telltown with that team is pretty bad. Yeah, what was the last time they've been really good? Time? Well, they won the league in twenty seventeen, I think. Okay, that's that long ago I think, and not the league, their division. Okay, okay, I think they won the division. They lost something right

away, yeah, like six years ago and they got eliminated. Holly, I'm twenty one. So they won the World sleas before you even born. Okay, two thousand and one. Oh you're two thousand and two one and two thousand one, h okay. So yeah, so they're like the Dallas Cowboys. All right, we better get out of here before we head further south. Jack mcguron will be here. We'll talk PAC twelve football preview from sports Betting Dying dot Sports Betting dime dot com. We'll be right back.

Jack, how are you? What else speak? How are you? We're doing okay? We wanted to pick your brains. It's only what three weeks before football season starts and you got a hold of the Pac twelve race. What are your thoughts actually before we get started. I'm actually sad because I love the

Fact and then the Fact twelve having it go away. It's kind of a disturbing to me. But I think we're all in that personal thing. Yeah, I think we all. I think that that's sort of the running opinion is people are sad that it's dead. But if you're an a on a fan, you're like, Okay, this is where we landed, so all good. But you're right, Jack, you know you got a long history with this. I mean the you know when when when you got here? The PAC twelve was only a few years or PAC ten was only a few

years old. Will you actually when did you get here? When did you get here? I'm a pretty I guess I'm a pretty old guy, right, Thank you, Jack, I got there. I got an eighty two for the Ben Lindsay era. Oh god, you're going to heaven the matter what? But you know that's san, that'than. You know, we all put our teeth on the pack back ten then Pack twelve. There was a blast of cover and a blast and make the road trips and the guys are

people we dealt with were terrific and the teams were terrific stuff. I was gonna say, what are you gonna? What are you gonna? What are you gonna miss most about it? Oh? Well, I just think that I like the regional rivalries at the PAC twelve. I like Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington. I mean everybody had a rival. Uh. There was a lot of this taste there, and it made the games kind of special. I guess that's the main thing on this. I just thought

it was a great conference that should have stuck together. I think I don't know if we blame Larry Scott or not, but it's just sad that it went away. Yeah, I think we all blame him or partly to bring Hey just real quick, cause you traveled a bit with you the teams right every note again? Yeah, Oh so so you have a favorite trip or favorite memory. Well, uh, you know, I always liked I've always liked going up to the Bay Area. There's always something going on there.

There's a blues club, John Lee Hooker maybe playing one night. And when I traveled with Pack six Pack six Pack baseball, every game was a day game because of Cayle Anne Stanford didn't have lights. So I guess that was my best tree. You know, that was the good memories of traveling. Not that that's kind of a selfish thing to say, but there was a lot of fun going to the Bay Area. I thought, Okay, well I'm gonna I'm gonna tell one one what legendary story, whether it's true or

not, you can tell us. But it's not. Again, people have told the story that you were leaving LA, you were running late, You were trying to get to the airport to not miss your plane. You pull you pulled up to the to the luggage area in your rental card, just jumped out of the car, left it there, ran by the hurts, counter tossed them the keys and said the cars over there, and ran to your plane. Did that happen? Well, parts of that, Dad,

Yeah, parts of that dead. I was running late for the plane for sure, and I figured, well, if it was just right out in front, they'd know where to find it, and it wouldn't be it wouldn't be too much of a too much of a burden on them. So I guess that's uh, I guess that's why I did them. But I was running late. I was trying to figure out a way to get from sc to the airport. Yeah, on all these city streets and a so I'm sure the rental cars. Thank guy's such a nice guy, just right there

for us there. So, So you talked about Berkeley and Berkeley, I really didn't like going to Berkeley, but I saw Jesus a few times there on telegraph. Did you see him? No? I missed him, never signed. Yeah, you know how the y'all protest, he was there telegraph and whatever the tree was. It was my favorite was hearing the story of the because when Greg Hanson I traveled together, you know, we were steakhouses and stuff like that. And then the first year had first year he had

to travel with Mike Downs. Remember Mike he covered in Berkeley. Mike took him to an Ethiopian restaurant. If you know, Greg, you know that Popy stayed in the car some water hozons. It does, it does, all right? So jack uh, you know you've got the Betty nods for for the league that that posted on your website sports betting time dot com and then you made a pick. So let's let's start at the top. Let's start. You know, usc is the betting favor plus two hundred on your

website and about that pretty much everywhere else. But you know you're you're a doubter of the Trojans. Talk to us about your pick in a in a little bit of a way. I'll tell you about me I think, I mean, the Trojans cable. Williams is the best play in the country, right and he's going to have another big year and he's probably gonna win the Heisman again. But kind of when you look back at twenty twenty two, until USC got to the fact All title game, when Williams got hurt,

everything was going right for them. They had a plus twenty two turnover margin. I believe that's the right number, and whatever it was, it was, yeah. One, it was just remarkable. And they also didn't have to play Washington or Oregon last year, and and to me that was that

was a lot of a lot of pluses. They got them both. They have them both this year, although they got Washington their home, but they you guys, remember they had a real hard time stopping anybody last year, and I don't know if they're the difficulty of schedule lends itself to thinking they will be as good as they were last year. To me, Washington is to me, Washington's the play to me because Michael Pennocks had a terrific year.

Their coach, Klin Debor really knows how to coach offense. He was in the offensive coordinator a few years ago, and you know when Panics was there and then Panics exploded last year. So I just think they're the They're the play to me, just because I don't see the Trojan's benefiting, especially from that Let's turnover. I mean, you can't be plus twenty two every year. That seldom. Let's seldom translates. So that's kind of why I

was picking Washington. I think Washington's the third choice at plus three forty, but I think they're the They're the teams that I don't know if they win, but they're the probably the team to play anyway. No, I just want to tell Ja because Jake agrees with you. I'm big with Steve and I. Steve and I have a with two wagers going. We have a wager on the over under on Arizona. We'll get to that. We'll get over under wins on that, and we'll get to that in a minute.

But I took Washington and UH and Steve took USC. I agree with you. I you know, just watching Michael Pennis plain I saw him a few times last year. I get it. Caleb Williams is you know, the Heisman Trophy winner. I'm not sure he's the best quarterback in the Pac twelve. Oh well, I don't know if you I read the I read this offseason that pro Scott consider Panics as good a prospect, that's not better a

prospect, And maybe that's the wrong way to say that. They consider him more refined, that that he does the little things very very well, and that always translates when you're stepping up in class. Yeah. Yeah, they're pretty close on Bonix, isn't bad? Right? Well, yeah, let's say let's say that you know, okay, so you didn't think it was going to be USC, then you skipped over Oregon as well, who was a little bit more of a favorite than Washington, at least on the betting

lines. So what are your thoughts on Oregon? Well, I think just the same. I mean, I just think that Washington plays Oregon plays Washington in Seattle, and I think that will result in a Washington win, and so that will turn things for the Huskies anyway. That the Ducks are great, mix is very good. They've got the big running back I can't his name is sake Bucky Irving. I mean, he's really good. They've got a really good offense, you know, they mean it's Ken Dillingham a little

bit. He Yeah, that offense last year was pretty terrific and he's gone and it'll probably continue. But you know when those kind of whinn't changes happened, I mean it's going to be close, right. Those top three teams are very good. I don't think we should forget about Utah at all because camera rising has led him to two Factall championships. That finally when he got to the starting in the lineup two years ago. Yeah, and they played

great defense and they're they're a scrappy bunch of dudes. I love Washington play because they're tough. They're tough, and they beat they beat you. They beat USC twice last year. That's hard to do. I don't think we can overlook them too, and that is hard to do. You look at the odds that you got. You got Washington third at plus three forty. Then it jumps up to plus five fifty for a two time defending champ. He's got the quarterback back. Their head coach is that, you know,

the dean of the coach of coaches in the Pac twelve. I mean, are they being undersold? I think a little bit. I think a lot of the question is how is Cameron Rising doing right now? Because he had that injury in the Rose Bowl that that brought them a chance to win the

Rose Bowl. And I haven't heard how he's done in spring in fall practice yet, but I think there was some question about how that how that need was going to recover, that ACL was going to get back, and I think that general, I mean, you have to be literally and I hope he doesn't rush back, right. I hope he doesn't rush back and play it less than full strength and get hurt again. But it's tough because they opened the season against Florida and somebody else that's real good. So are you

that's a tough deal for them. Are you going to be coming the PAC twelve for these guys the ones you just wrote or somebody else? Yeah? I think so. I mean we spread it around a little bit. There's a good stable of guys there. But I hope so, you know, I think it's uh, I've done it for a while, so yeah, he's comfortable to do it. The reason I ask is because it's gonna be the most fun of a PAC twelve schedule in a long time. Yeah,

I mean, everybody's everybody's want to kill everybody else. By Washington State and Oregon State, they're going to come in with a vengeance, right, You're gonna be a little like that. You think, okay, three or fourth, what's not where we are for well, you know standing, so we went through okay where Yeah, the youths are fourth. Okay. So then then there's this group of teams that like for for a team like Arizona, you know, you got to win a couple of these games. UCLA,

Oregon State, and Washington State in the middle again. You know, you know, people want to believe in chip Kelly, but then there's people who don't believe in chip Kelly. Then Oregon State, you've got them that they had a great season last year and they think they're gonna keep that going. And Washington State, like the others, has a great quarterback coming back. But give us some of your thoughts on those three as a group. Yeah, I think UCLA is gonna lose. Obviously lost too many players to be

in the top Excel one again. Dorian Thompson Robertson and Jack Jack Charbonnet. That's those are hard guys are replace and they always have you know, they always have some recruit in there. They always have some talents. I think Oregon State is not far from being a big dark horse. When they got the Clemson quarterback dj Oglele and he kind of underchieved in Clemson, there was

a lot of pressure on him to perform and he didn't. Maybe that won't be the case in Oregon State. Maybe he can be just a guy and play well and do his do his thing. Their coach, their coach is a good coach, YEA. Their coach who knows how to know how to win games. He's been around, Uh, he's been around Pack twelve for years. They've got a good running back, Martinez is a good running back. I'm not sold on on the on the Cougar, but you know,

I'm I'm interested to see how Jet Fish is going to do. I think that's an up and coming program right there. And one of my one of my best best last year before the season was Arizona State to win more than two point five games. I mean that was like that was like a lot. Yeah yeah, that was then in a month. Yeah that was kind of fun. Yeah that was funny. But it's five and a half now, okay, or at five in some place, but it's not been lower than five. I took it at five, and I took the over at

five and a half. And then Steve Steve and I have a bet he took the under. I took the over five and a half. Where are you going? Where are you going? On that? They're gonna be Northern Arizona, Utess and Stafford and then you're right and Colorado. That's four. So they beat Wazoo or you know state, they could do that. I could see over, I could see over. I think i'd play over on that. Yeah, it's a fair bet. I guess I agree. I agree. I mean smart money is over silver five and a half. That's

a good number though. I think that's a good number because Mississippi State is going to be a problem, yeah, and at USC is never any fun, and Oregon States to be good. Now maybe they'll knock off Oregon State or win at Washington say that you're right, Jay, those are the teams. I think they Those are the games they need to play well, at least one of those. One of those right where I'm thinking they where I'm thinking you take the overs with the UCLA, Oregon State and Washington State.

Two of those games are here. Uh, they got UCLA and Oregon State here. I figured they got to win one of those two and then if they can, as you said, if they don't do something stupid and go lose to ASU. You know, wait a second, you know something always happens with one of these things. Teams are not supposed to when they lose, the teams are not supposed to. Well, they can't lose to one of those four that jack Man and lose the Stafford or something like that.

I like that. I like that overplay. That's a pretty good play. Yeah, because they you know, the Lauren's not bad. Laurans throw the ball. Yeah, no, he's good. Yeah, they got some guys. Yeah, it's whether the defense can hold them. What do you know about the nice? Uh fine, I'm sorry to interrupt. That sign that freshman uh commit for next year. That's really a big quarterback big ye okay? Oh? Oh Southon King. Oh so you you mentioned Kenny Dillingham. He's at ASU. Now. Uh, you know, they got bad,

not as bad as theirs, only gotch but they got bad. You know, what are some expectations for for him up at ASU? Well, he's doing all the right things. He's an enthusiastic sun devil. You know, he went to Issue and he loves the tradition, he loves the program he's got. I think he's building a nice culture up there. Yeah, Drew Fine from Motre Dame is supposed to be their starting quarterback and he's decent. We'll see how that works and lines of Badger. He's a good receiver.

But I think the rebuilding thing is just you know, it's going to be a rebuilding year and five wins maybe at the top something like that. But I think the I think they're moving in the right direction. I think after after herb last that was kind of a mess, you know, all the off field stuff and it just didn't work out. But I think they're they're going to go in the right through action and maybe not this year, you know, maybe it'll take him a year or two. But I sort of

like the moves day they did. They've got Oklahoma State in Presno State early in the season, that's probably two losses. Yeah, they got sc coming in, they got Washington State coming and they've got a decent home schedule. But I just don't I think it's going to take him a few years but I have confidence they can do it, just like Jet. I think they're on the trajectory getting up. All right, we're about out of time.

We can't let you go without asking about coach Priyan. Yeah, well, I mean he's doing it his way right, Ye, it runs what He ran seventy guys out of the program and then got more, got more players. And I kind of don't like that. I don't think that's fair to the kids. Although I know they offered in scholarships and they dance goal give the scholarships. I just don't like that. I don't. I mean, it's a little easier to win a Jackson State than it is and back twelve,

and I think he's going to run into trouble. His son is pretty good, Shader's pretty good the quarterback. Another learning experience and another rebuilding deal. And you know, they're one of the teams that a lot of the sharps are picking them really improve. I don't. I don't know that they will. I'm a little I'm not quite sold on that yet. Well,

Jack, we appreciate your time. Thanks a munch during the seas. By the way, just so you know, Jack, on your word, I'm gonna throw down on the Huskies. Okay, just I gotta throw it down. If you want to give us a quick call, please do. Are you optimistic like these

two guys? You know, I'm with you, guys. I think I just said that because it's more likely to win six or more than five or less realistically. Yeah. Yeah, but again, you know, you look at the schedule and you know they got to win some games that they do have to win the game that you think that's gonna be a hard, hard win to get. Yeah, So let me ask you, because you're out on about and so my a lot of people I don't want to see.

They're giddy they're very optimistic. Yeah, so I just want to make that was the same feeling you're getting, not giddy, but but but like the progress. Yeah No, they're very they're very optimistic. Uh they as you said, they like the progress that they're seeing, you know, with with all of the hesitancy that people had for Jed when he got here, right or people like what the hell are you doing? Yeah? Right right, there's none of that laught no, no, And he's growing on them,

right, he's growing on them. Yeah, he's growing on me. Well, they like because they like I think what they like is that you get it. You get a sense that he genuinely believes in the program and what he genuinely believes that he can win here. Oh without questions. I don't know where. I say. I was driving around catching every red light and I'm yelling at the lights, and that's saying you know what, uh in this time, I says. One of the things that I like about Jed

is he's he's very shrewd, and he's been shrewd. He got this job because he was shrewd growing up in Florida doing what he did with the windshielding, the notes, bouncing around trying to get opportunities. Yeah, he's only forty five years old, forty six years old. It was all a plan, exactly exactly. He's a very shrewd dutey knows what he's doing. And I don't know what his next movie is. I guess we won't know until we know. But he's got to win here first. Now, this whole

thing has been a plan. It's he. You know, if we could set him down and get him to just pour out all of this without the always trying to look like he's rehearsed, rehearsed, revoting and stuff like that, we would just say, get to his heart, you know. I think I think we would find out that that this is this is something he set out to do a long, long time ago. No question, he's executing this plan exactly the way he had hoped, and it's working exactly the

way he did. I think maybe deep in his heart he probably wished it would have happened earlier. But here we are. He's here, right. He's a guy that never lay college football. As he said, he started out by putting sticky notes on Steve's Furrier's car. He reminds me so much of John he so much of Josh. Yeah, he got in there too. You know, he found ways to get get known and get in front of people, and he built it into a Division one head call head football

coaching job. And he's done it. This is the one thing that he and I don't know. I'm sure he has an ego of some sort because he's reached this point. But he's allowed some big names, some big people to help him. Right, come on, rich Rod ain't doing that, right, Rich Rodd ain't doing that those other guys, right, Red Rod listens to ret Rod exactly, Stoops probably the Stoops and someone who did he listen to I don't know, but he didn't care. So you do you

know what I'm saying. Good coaches don't do that. Yeah, and see and and but that's the thing again, part of his plan. And I think you have to sort you have to you have to kind of respect that and just say, man, you know, to see a guy set his sights on something and then go get it right. No, No, it takes a special dude to to hey, if I'm not gonna get it, if I well, we talk about all the time when in your job, when when you used to have I'm gonna get dudes, you're gonna make me

look smarter, right or you know what I'm saying. In the end, I'm gonna benefit from the right, right, right one because you know how to handle people or try to handle people, and and and you look good part of the protect I mean in the end, you know, if you've got somebody that that helps you look, then why the hell wouldn't you want that? That was a bad shot. It bolts off the rim. I know it was. It was a bad Jason. I don't know how he misses from Yeah, no, it's my two foot plats. I missed from

over there. I don't miss from here from ten none of a ten Steve Steve, Steve front room to a back room, your back room, a bottle into the garbage. And it was bad. It was bad. But you know, getting back to that, you know, it's he's he's executing this and the way he had always thought he would execute it. And it's it's been no question, no question. I'm sure he has his detractors, but don't we all. I don't hear of him any any no, no,

not locally. Yeah, I'm talking about you know, well you okay, he's gonna win, but he's not as long as you gonna stay there. You know, there's that, there's well, there's let's saying that's the thing. I mean, is that a good problem or a bad problem to have for people to say about about you? You're only gonna be here so long because you're winning. That's that's a nice thing to have somebody to say

about you. I I still think there's a little bit of when when you're talking about saying an NFL an NFL franchise, or even an upper level uh college football thing, there's still gonna be the little bit of not having actually played the game. Yeah, yeah, I know there's been some coaches like that. The dude from Notre Dame, the big the big dude, uh, I can't remember his first name. Yeah, Charlie Weiss, Charlie Weiss. You know, there's a couple of others. I think, didn't they

say Sonny Dike's never played? One of those guys. You know, you know, not everybody can be Jim Harbor and have been a major college quarterback and then be a head guy. You don't need you don't you don't need to be a brain searcher. I guess you didn't brain surgery. Well, can you go to school to be a brain surch You can learn to be

a brain surger. You can learn to be sure. But at the end of the day, in my mind, if you're a good coach, good people person, know how to deal with people, you're gonna be pretty good a lot of different things. I'm not saying he can't. I'm just saying that, no, no, no, there's probably a bias towards that. Well, let me ask you, because this was the biggest question his first year, his play calling. We were all biased against it. Everybody,

he's not done this before? What are you doing? And he had somewhere else, But then we realized he just didn't have the players to do. So I'm sure that's kind of gone away with you. Yeah, yeah, I look, I mean he got a good quarterback in there, and look what he did last year. Yeah, I mean, when was the last time the Arizona had a top ten passing team in the country. Never? Right, So you know, get a running game now, and I think Michael Wiley is well, all of them, Michael Wiley, Jonah Coleman and

all those guys will be that. I think offensive they're gonna be They're gonna be just fine. The big question for Arizona is gonna be what what improvement do we see defensively? No, that's that's gonna be the key. That's gonna be the key, without question, because they'll keep them in games. They don't have to score as much, just have to be in games. That's it, because you know, well, they weren't in a lot of

games last year. I mean, I've told you Steve and how I felt when when with rich Rod's offense, you you thought every time they got the ball you expected him to score. Now, they didn't always score, but you thought he runs a system that if they just you know, execute their system, they're gonna score and they're gonna score every single time. And you felt like that when they got their hands on the ball, they're gonna go

down and score. Jed wasn't He wasn't like that last year. But you felt certainly better about them getting the ball and going down and scoring, you know when they needed to. You know, you go to that UCLA game.

I've seen I watched that Ucla game probably three or four times now, you know, and that you know Ucla takes the lead, Arizona gets the ball and they were like, guess what, guys, We're going to score And they did, and they went down and scored and won the game, just because you felt like there was a confidence that they were going to do that, not on just a confidence, but a capability to do that. So if they can keep doing that and then pick up the pick up the

defense, who knows what the hell they can do this year. But then if but then if they don't and if the defense isn't a whole lot better, then you have five wins or four wins? How much you're going So we're going here right, Yeah, I'm just wondering how much athletics played a part and coming here. Yeah, no much really because when I came I was going for cremad so more assault academics. You went from one extreme to

the other. Yeah, no mad journalism so so but now you're thinking, now you're in the think of it because when I came here, I mean, I know about basketball, but that was about it. Like I didn't really know about football or any other sports. And not that I'm in journalism. I know about you know, football programs starting to you know rise and then more basketball and you know, soccer, base off, all that kind of you know things. So yeah, but I didn't really come into the

school looking for the athletics. It was more so academics. So it wasn't it wasn't like you wanted it to be part of this. You weren't thinking of the social aspect of being here and having fun with football games and no, not like not no, he's not now because you gotta work well now. But but you know, but when I first came in, I mean, you know, some people do steve, some people like the social aspect of of all that. But what of of going into what athletics brings you.

Yeah, yeah, but from a social angle it does, but it doesn't if you're working the thing at this my point, because you're you're you're, you're in the middle of it. Yeah now yeah, yeah, so your fighters are no good, your senters are no good. Yeah whatever, I'm not joking, I'm yeah, that's true. Sure, you know, but it is. You know, we come on, we did as kids. We were current high school games Friday nights. Yeah, uh, filing stories at ten ten thirty yea. And by that time you're done and you're

you might be twenty one years old and you're six. Well I only had to be nineteen, so we didn't get to So there's my point. You but you clid it when your guys are already Your friends are right there, party, had a few. And again, the social aspect of it is why I got out right because I wanted to be if you wanted to enjoy, yeah, yeah, I wanted to be a fan. I wanted to stop. And that's another thing that you're gonna face. Either you're a fan, you can still be a fan, but you have to be a you

know, narrow fan. Yeah, I've learned that. That's why football am I really on a team. For basketball, it's like players, and then for college sports, so I don't really have like a team obviously you know arizonn or but like when I cover games, I'm out, you know, rooting or I'm just focused on after So yeah, yeah, good attitude. No, it's perfect, it will serve you at least yeah sure later, Okay, Hey, good good first hour, good stuff, Thanks for good.

Jack mcguter. Sportsbetting time dot Com is his website. You can go on there and read his preview where he takes the Washington Huskies to win the PAC twelve and and so do I. All right, we'll be right back second half of the show. We're gonna have Pete Williams coming up in about at about fifteen afters, so let's stick around.
