This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen, houred by Nova Insurance Services. Make sure your most prized possessions kat z R two son and iHeart Radio Station. Yet A good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to R on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, You're Jaken Zalez, and I've got a guy sit in today, said, back in with some cross country this week. But yeah, happy to excited for tonight and the weekend, so we'll see. You're
going to both, going to both. Yep, you know, you're probably one of the bigger sports fans we've had in this building. And who who was it? The the never went to any justin just Oh that's right, Yeah was that name? Okay, one of the first Yeah, yeah, maybe I'll go, Well, what do you do if you know what? We're playing video games? You know, Man of War or not Man? What's your favorite food? No? What is it? What's the the war video game that everybody plays? Is it the one of the Call of Duty?
Call of Duty that we play? Call of Duty? All right, all right, Steve, I have a question for you. Oh, go ahead. Well, I'm sitting here, uh, you know, as we all, as I always do. You know, I'm flipping through Twitter and looking at stuff. And Brian how our buddy up at Colorado covering for the Buffs for the Boulder Daily Camera. He's in a tweet storm right now, just one after another after another after another. Okay, because obviously all the
attention that's gone on Colorado. Uh, you know, he's just having to push out content. Would you let's say you're not as old as you are, not let's say ten years ago, but it's it's today's environment, but you're ten years young. Would you want to be covering Colorado football right now under the circumstances, everything's just the way it is. Well, you're just ten years I think so. I think so. Oh that's tough. That's a good question. I think so. But I would be reluctant, you
know, having to social media dealing with the stuff. There's so many stories. The national media is all over the place, you know, every game is you know, would you want to be doing that? Uh? No, no, is it my job? Yes? Yes, yeah, I guess I guess. How about seventy five percent? Yes, twenty five percent what the hell am I doing? And that's you know in TV. Now you see this kids today because there are very few older people, they have
to carry their own equipments, their own show. They don't, they don't have a photographer anymore. They're doing this is kind of like that version. Oh you know, someone pooped, I gotta right, I gotta tweet that. You know, really does people do people carry? You've probably got limited access, right, you get the same thing everybody else gets, right in
terms of interviews and press conference and stuff like that. So you have to write, You've got you've got to comp with stuff that other guys aren't coming up with, but with the same material. Sure, yeah, I mean would you want to do that? Not really? I'm glad I don't have to know. Yeah, I don't have to know. And but you don't
think it's everyone like you said, it has the same information. It's how you present it, right, And and we've seen this for the last five six years, the kids that we go to the press conferences with tweet about whatever everything. I don't think it's all newsworthy. Yeah, do you know you know it's not well yes, and no, okay, we don't think it's newsworthy. But stuff that you and I think is news isn't newsworthy? Is newsworthy these days? I don't. I don't know about that. I
don't know about that. I couldn't give you an example from yesterday or the day before. But okay, for example, okay, yesterday, a big deal was made of the fact that that Travis Hunter and the dude who ripped his kidney out or his liver out got together went bowling. You know, there's photos and there's video and all this stuff. Now you got to do a story on that, right, Yeah, Okay, that's at or at the or a minimum. You've got to do some social media on it.
That's news. That's news. I'll give you another one. Okay. So this this week, uh, Tommy went and you were there at the press coming. We had his president on Monday, and he went to the south side right right. I did anything that they did, I did too. I was there everywhere, and Bruce was doing the same thing. Why because I knew Bruce was gonna be there. Why is Bruce there because he knew I was gonna be there. And if I didn't have it and you didn't
have it or whatever, we'd be told what the yah? Yeah, you were in trouble if somebody had something you didn't. Right, Absolutely right. But it's changed so much. Well, there's no question. I don't know about these tweets. I don't fall I don't care what they had for lunch. I don't care. Who gives a crapit? Now we both said, all right, it's always more fun to cover a winner than a loser. Right, So is Brian? How is he having more fun with this or
did he have more fun last year when they absolutely stocked? No, he was not having fun. How could you? I mean, it's a miserable coming on losing team. You know that, it just is our bits. A miserable part was the coaching search. But no, I think this is fun if he has some access, and then I think that his his opinion because he's in the house of kind of people want and other people want to
know. And what do you think? We had him on the show a couple of times because we want to know for that reason, what's going on? How's life? Even how was life? Because you must be having a hard time or difficult time. Yeah, but no, I think I think it would be fun. I don't think it would get old though, I think he would get old. Yeah, well it this week may kind of take the edge off of it, or whatever you want to call it. They get rolled by USC. Now there are three and few football teams.
They've gotten their butts kicked twice. You know, they've got to I think their scheduled that they think they've got as U and Stanford coming out, it kind of takes the the luster spotlight off of it. Uh, this may be the last week we hear from them to this extent in a while. But then again, if they go off and win, then it just continues. Sure, So, so yes or no to your questions. I thought you can ask yesterday civil questions. Actually, Danny Martinez did a great job.
So really didn't miss you much. We mentioned you, we talked about you. Not bad, but yeah, we missed you a little bit. Yeah sometimes you know so anyway, but I you know, I just was thinking about that because I'm sitting here and and you know, Brian's got he's
got a tweet going out about every thirty seconds. He's doing all rolling out all these stats and all this stuff, and I'm like, you know, it used to be you know, you go get your story, you're right, your game story, go home and have some dinner and go cover the game, or your advanced you go home and cover the game the next day. I have analytics gone into h journalism, right, You've got to have that information because if you don't, again, as Steve said, somebody else
is gonna have it. And where when Steve and I were working, you know, it was two newspapers against each other. But now you know, Bruce Pasco has got to make sure that about ten different guys who are way younger and probably more energetic than him don't have anything that he doesn't have. He's got to do that as well. So it's kind of I don't know, man, it's just it's it's it's not easy. I I don't even know the answer to my own question, So I don't know. I don't
know. So, I mean I assume the energy to start the years was probably fun for them. But I mean, we'll see if it if it lasts. But I mean Foxes, you know their their pregame show is that is in Colorado again tomorrow? You know, yeah, you know, and and then it's the big game. It's a noon It's a ten am game Colorado time, which seems kind of nuts. Who that's in California, right
in Colorado. No, it's cold, it's up in Colorado. Remember the the uh, the athletic director had to send out a uh oh you didn't see this, you weren't here, Yes, they call the Colorado Athletic Director. Rick George had to send out a message over social media telling people to behave themselves tomorrow. It's a really long statement saying you no valter language you you know, be basically said, act like you know, nice human beans and don't rush the field. Oh if they win or win, yeah,
if they win, there's I'm gonna stop it. Yeah, they're gonna rush the field. I mean they rushed the field against Colorado State, so they're gonna rush the field if they beat USC. I don't want to know what they're gonna do if they beat Yeah. Yeah. Anyways, all right, Hey, we got a great show. Yogi Roth will be coming up in about ten minutes. Uh, he's in town to cover the he's he's doing the Arizona Washington game for uh PAC twelve Networks. And then Kevin Singleton.
Steve got Kevin Singleton to join us because he and his brother Chris were pretty good football players here at Arizona late eighties. Chris was the number seven pick, Steve. That's yeah, yeah, because Anthony Smith was either right before him, right after him. Uh, those are one of those great years. Yeah, well, top top twelve for sure. Yeah. So Kevin will join us at at about three thirty five, three forty, and then our usual analysts were gonna pick his brain on some stuff. Jake Fisher will
be on at four fifteen. But good stuff today. Yeah, Okay, so did you miss me? I did miss you, Steve. How was it? I didn't know. Danny did a great job. I got Danny
Martinez in here. He's the director of officer for softball. So I think it was funny because I kept saying, Okay, Dan, we're gonna talk about softball, and then we talked about sometimes finally got to it in the last segment, just talked about his job, you know, how things are going, you know, kind of like you know the thing that I tried to ask Dave Hicky about. Okay, you got all these coaches in their third year, right, the program is there, you know, and he
kind of agreed with me on that one. So it was it was a good conversation, right, okay, But we had had a couple of good guests. We had Jack McGruder came on at three fifteen, which Bady kind of told the line, you know, Danny being a athletic department employee, really had to not involvement in the gambling conversations that go on and on our show. Yeah, probably rolled his eye few times. No, not Danny.
He's not gonna roll his eyes about that stuff. And then they we had Bruce Pasco came on and we kind of preview the Red Blue Game. A good conversation with him as well. So okay, cool, cool cool. What else is going on? A lot of things going on? College football starts a big game tonight, right yea, Utah, I'm taking it, Steve. I'm still I'm still on it. I'm still gonna take Oregon
State. Remember on Wednesday I said I was gonna try. I was gonna put the kiss of death on him and take them put the deals and you know they're they're gonna you know what they're gonna cover. They're gonna beat Utah is three and a half, Oregon State by three and a half. I don't think they're gonna cover. But that's not me. You know, I'm not touching that game. Cam Rising. Thing is it's have have we heard? Have they said? Is he not starting? It's up in the air.
But it looks like Nate Johnson's gonna play. But I don't know how they're saying that he's gonna start if last week they said cam Rising was probably gonna start, right, so something I don't know what changed. But but organ State is a giving three and a half. I'm gonna go and take go ahead and take the Beavers tonight. I'm not even gonna get to watch a game because, like I do the Red and Blue game. But I think, uh, I actually think Oregon State, we'll do it because it's
at Organ State. Really, more than anything, this this will if if they find a way to win, I think this will be Uh. This is one of those program changing wins where the momentum starts to shift a bit for them. I know they've been in the conversation of you know, top of the PAC twelve and whatnot, but they got to get it done in order to it to really be in that conversation. Yeah. So anyways, but uh, you know there's some of the good stuff again, as we
said a Colorado in usc tomorrow. That game starts, that actually starts at nine o'clock our time. It's a long day of sports, a long day of things going on. Oh and then I'm giving I'm giving away my picks because they were if you listen to the show yesterday, you heard these. But you didn't listen to the show. But mcgreerder gave us his uh he doesn't upset special every week on sports betting time dot com. He's taking Arkansas, so so I told him he I told him I was gonna take Arkansas.
Who do they play? They they're getting six in a neutral syche game against Texas. A Now m sore. There's two of my picks, Arkansas and Organ States. Okay, I won't touch you either. There were a plan to see he doesn't pick his old other people to pick up for him. He's not doing well either way. I'm terrible. How MC doing. Yeah, I didn't check he's done doing alright. I'm not to ask the guy that held held you hushes at the front saying you following me, like
asking anybody. All right, Hey, let's we should take a breaker a little early so that we can get, we can get Kettle Singleton in here. Little we've got We've got Yogi Roth coming up right now, right, we gotta give him a call. But then, okay, we'll get Kevin in here. Okay, cool, all right, stick around for Yogi Roth.

Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Subscribe now to the podcast on the iHeart Radio Whip. Just ser Hey, welcome back to Why on the Ball Here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, Peter Jenkins Alas. Now on the phone, we have Yogi Roth from the Pac twelve Networks. How are you, Yogi? I'm doing great. Good to be in town and you steal the energy. Got the hoops tonight, football tomorrow. It's a it's an amazing time to be in TUSA.
Yeah, we set up the basketball game for you, Yogi. We we you know, we told Tommy Lloyd, Hey, Yogi is gonna be in town on Friday. Can you do the Red and Blue game on Friday night. He said, Okay, so just so you know, I appreciate it while you're you're here to do the Washington game. A lot of talk about it this week, you know, Steve and I being the old guys in the room and spend a lot of time talking about, you know, the big upset at ninety two. There's been some other great games here in Tucson
with Washington along the way. Washington, we keep hearing, I keep hearing the word scary. Good. Uh, well, what do you know, what what have you seen so far? Yeah, that's very legit there to me. I vote him number one in America. I think they're the best team in the country. I think they've been the most consistent team in the country in really every phase. And I think when you look at championship teams,
they have to begin to develop. This killer instinct is the edge of them, and I think you do have as I think Canon DeVore has done an incredible, incredible job with the development of this team, with the retentional players, recruiting new ones, recruiting out of the portal. They're they're legit. They're not perfect. You know, their defense isn't Georgia of two years ago, but this is This is a loaded team, and I think Arizona
is going to have everything they can handle. But I think Arizon will be able to move the ball. I think we're gonna get a high scoring affair and for Jet Fish's team, they're gonna have to come out the gates. I think strong like, it can't be what happened against Oregon last year, can't be what Cal did last weekend against Washington. You've got to survive the first quarter to have a chance in this game. So let me talk to
your analysts inside you. They haven't done that. I mean, that's one of the problem is they haven't come out at all in the first quarter and their offense hasn't been the offense that we thought it would be. So so what kind of gives you that thought that it could happen. Well, I think that you've got to look at each situation in the games they're they're a little different in terms of like how this team has started. You know, whether it's one play here, or whether it was a unique penalty there,
or just the way the game flows. So I'm not worried about Arizona not being able to move the ball, especially when you look at the environment they're gonna be in, the playmakers they have, how the game went last year, and the confidence that game I think afforded this team. So I think we make too much of that sometimes because you can do this, say anthing about you have. You know, they didn't score against Boys in the first game in the first quarter, Oh my god, what's wrong with the best
offense in the country. Nothing, it was just kind of how the game went. And then they end up scoring thirty something before half. So I'm not worried. These are two quick strike offenses that I think I'll move the ball on each other. So preseason and I'm gonna I think I remind our
Steners probably every day that I picked Washington to win the league. And I think Michael Pennocks is a better Heisman Trophy candidate than Caleb Williams, even though Caleb, you know, one the thing last year he's the best quarterback in the league. He's certainly not shown that I'm wrong, But what time you've seen him, how good is he? Well? I think I think there's a lot of really talented players at the talk. You know, we get
into dialogue all the time. Think about the draft last year and cdj's draft versus Bryce Young, and you gotta pick one or Josh Rose and Sam Darnald, you go pack twelve, Era Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley iOS out of the elk of I don't think you. I don't think you have to. And I think there's premier players. I put Bonix and Camera award in that discussion, two of the four best quarterbacks performing at this point of the season
head end the week five. I think it's been those four guys most consistent, most explosive, most challenge to prepare for, and they're all in seated. You know, not a shocker there when you look at the commonality among them and gam and they get they've all done it differently. And it's for Caleb, he hadn't He's like to play one game four quarters. Pennick doesn't
really had to play any game through four quarters. Cam more type to win every game in the fourth quarter, you know, like I think there's differences bo Nix, uh, you know, he doesn't really had to play late in the game other than Texas Tech game, but he let him on the road to the game when he drive so I think they've all played at a premium level. They're all and they're all different, right yet, Pennox is
a is a pure passer. But I've been around Caleb and Mike call in the same field at the Only eleven the summer, and they're both dropping dimes at the same rate. So I don't know. It's hard for me to pick. But you are going to get elite quarterback play as an Arizona Wildcasts fan the next two weekends against the two teams that were just referenced, and SE and of course Washington. You know, so Jay, that's the only think Jay's gunn right there? Exactly nothing so far so far. So obviously
we know that you're close to Jed. How do you think he's done so far? And let me see this, there's no doubt that this team has improved over the last couple of years, without question. The problem with this team is everybody else has improved too. Yeah, I think he's done an incredible job. You look at the dramatic rebuilt and I'm just leaving his office and he's really proud of of where this team is at and where they could go. I think you got him right to the place where like, can
they get over the humph? And that is a year, three year, fourth thing. When you look at traditional rebuilds, right, this is an sc from last year or even Washington, let alone Colorado's roster rebuild from from this year. It's just different. You know. That's just the reality of the timing of when Judge Fish took it, but also the ideology that he had, which is to win in recruiting high school players. Look at the best players on this team. You can make an argument or you know,
guys that he got out of high school. Right when you look at Jacobanoo McMillan, if you were going to pick a guy on both sides of the ball, that's who I would choose. And they look came from the sun of California, both came from the same high school, and both of them their second year in the program and thriving right now. So I think it's been an incredible rebuild. I think that they're in position to now get over
the hub. And the reality is since here one, I mean yere one, we'd be on this call with you and we kind of smile and joke about it a little bit and say, Jed Lasso is the nickname that I know I gave Jed because he got the team motivated every week. I mean, they had eight games where they were in the fourth quarter heading into the fourth quarter and then the score or less and they only won one game,
right, we know the game that they did. And then he looked at last year little I think five games that were close, but they won two or three of them. And now this year, you know, they had one obviously obviously type one on the road and they should be staying in every chance to win it. Now when you're in conference play, they do it on the road in the first time, I think it's three or four years. A road conference game Arizona was shavored in was last weekend and they found
a way to win. So I just think there those are the progressions that he's taken this program. Now, can you get a signature one at home? And we got the one on the road against US last year, But can you beat you know one of the powerhouses in college football, the Oregan's, Washington USC's you know those teams at the top, the Utah's at the top of this league. Whether it's brand wise or performance wise. That's gonna
be the next step for his team possibly to take this year. And I think organ State has been in the same same vein they haven't had that signature win. I think that Jed is looking for that at home and tomorrow night's an opportunity. Well, this is a week where you know, what what what's coming to be known as you know, the PAC twelve cannibalizing itself. This is where it kind of can start, right. You got Washington coming
to Arizona. Well, I don't think everyone's I don't think everyone's gonna win. I think they have a chance to win. Washington can lose the game. USC's got Colorado. Uh, you know, Utah's got to go up and play Oregon State. You know, this is where these teams now, the competition in the PAC twelve starts to you know, get a footholding and teams have to be on the alert. You know, we've talked a long time. We can guess and what we want about is there is somebody going
to come out of this good enough to get in the playoff. But this is a tough league for these guys, and weekend and week out right, I mean it's just it usually is, but it really is this year. Yeah, no, this is this is going to be challenged for for this league all year. I mean, Coach Frish, I were just talking about that of how low of the league is and look at how Saturday is the league gonna, you know, obviously change shape dramatically over the course of the
of the next year. And and it's a bummer because I think nil is what swung it back. You know, guys want to play on the West coast, they want to build the brands on the West coast, and now, uh, you know, it's just going to be different. And I'm with you. I don't anticipate anybody going undefeated in the league play. You look at just the top four teams, they all play each other. Last time George and Alabama played each other in the regular season outside of twenty twenty,
it's over a decade ago. Like it's a joke what goes on in other leagues or what doesn't go on in other leagues. So I think this league will do that to each other again. But I do think it where we sit now, when need to start talking about the Pac twelve having two teams in the playoffs versus are they going to slide a team into the fourth spot, because I think that's been the most lazy BS narrative of all time over the course of the last two years, of will they get a team
in at four? Well, here we sit today with four teams in the top ten. How about two teams into the playoffs? And I think that's how those of us that have a microphone should be talking about this league where we sit today, and then let it, let it adjust, let it adjust, and course correct in November when the top four play each other, or an Arizona knocks off one of them, or an organ state you know, knocks off, maybe you tak tonight. That's the fun part of the
league. But I do think that the teams at the top right now are dramatically worthy of a higher ranking than where they are today because I think I don't think they're being respected based on how they've played, who they've played, and what they've done. When Oregon beat a team on the road and they
destroyed Colorado, who is a darling. You look at Utah and what they've done about their starting quarterback, and Washington has played the most consistent among anybody who ranked higher than that, and I get they don't have the quality of win on the road like Texas has or the winds that Florida State has, but they didn't almost lose the Boston College, you know. So I'm just kind of curious to what the CFT would do if they were in that room
today and having to make a decision. Right well, maybe the last one for me, Yogi. No one's really talked about the defense, and at least right now, so let's talk about the defense. Everyone who's defense has been kind of like the beacon for this team. Yeah, you know what they have. I think that it's a little skewed based on who they've played, you know, I do agree, like you know, they're probably not getting enough love, like I think right now, and I'm not saying you
guys aren't doing this. I think nationally it's like it's four no utab against like one in three Arizona. That's what the narrative feels like versus I think Arizona's plan like a top twenty five team, right though, a play away from beating miss to be stayed on the road and being undefeated and is truly being a top twenty five Matt Joe, uh, but you know whatever, So that's kind of how it how it lays out with where we sit today. But we've got a great one on our hands. I cannot wait to
watch to see how it shakes out. I love how the crowd is going to be here in the sands and the families and all the things. That is always too silent on family weekend, so it should be. It should be another electric weekend here, let alone in week five in college football. All right, Yogy, we know you gotta run, so we do appreciate you taking a little bit of time with us, and uh, you know, have a good game tomorrow. Cannot wait up to see it there,
all right, see, yes, no good insight. I think it's kind of all goes along with what we've been talking about, right right. This is gonna be a huge test, and it's well we think we know this is. This game is a mystery. I'm looking at Washington schedule. Yeah, they beat the hell out of people, but you know what you stay is probably the best win, right right right? No, I did the Michigan States. We don't know, we don't know. It should be fun. I mean it should be fun. Well, it should be fun.
Whether it is or not, we'll see, No Steve, you know I think here, here's the thing. If if Arizona doesn't go out and you know, lay an egg in the first quarter, right down twenty one to nothing or something like that, if it's a if it's a one or even a two touchdown game, at the end of the first quarter, Averzone's put some points on the board, they move the ball, they look like they're going to compete. That's all I'm asking for in this, you know,
in the game. I don't want the game to be over in the first quarter. I fully expect Washington score probably three out of the first four times they get the ball, really I do. But if Arizona can score a couple of those times as well, so give me, give me a score we have a couple of minutes. Give me a score that's not good, and give me a score that's good and a really good score. Well, if they're down twenty one zip in the first quarter, okay, that's bad.
It's bad, okay, so'll give me a funnel. Give me a forty five they if they lose, you know, forty nine to twenty, Okay, that's not okay. So give me a score that you like. If they lose, you know, thirty eight, thirty one, forty two to thirty one, forty two to thirty five, where everyone is maybe within a score or two in the fourth instances in the fourth and of course if
they wouldn't, you'll be over. Yeah. But I think what what you don't want, you don't want is for Washington to get away early, all right, because then the number of things happen one it's kind of like it just sucks. The game's terrible. The fans will leave at halftime, right, I'm surely the students. Sure. It's got to be close at the half, and people gotta want to stay to make it an exciting game in
the second half. That's all I'm looking for you. If you tell you, if you give me a score, like if you're okay, would you be okay with twenty eight twenty one and at halftime? Absolutely, I'll sign up for that right now. You know, I'll sign up for that right now. But what I don't want it to be as thirty five to seven. Then it's then like everybody's gonna lose interest. The balloon has been popped
in stay right right? Yeah, Well it could be any of those would be any of those things, And that's and that's why I thinks this game is going to be fun, because it could be any of those. Any scenario could happen tomorrow, all the way up to Arizona coming out and going off like they haven't gone off all years, and the defense, the defense
stopping Washington because and that's supposibility. We've seen stranger things, right, I mean, I think you can argue that this is the best defense that Washington will have played up to now. Right, Yeah, you'd assume that you'd assumed that, right, I mean, it's not Boisey State, it's not Michigan State. You know, they're at home, right, So, you know, just something that keeps people interested halftimes when they stick around, that's
all I'm That's all I'm looking for. Okay, there's your hope. All right, Well, let's let's take our break, and we're gonna be right back with Kevin Singleton joining us UH honorary co captain to Marrow, former player obviously at Arizona with his brother twin brother Chris. I'm losing you. How did this come about? How did it come about? How did you become the captains of the team this weekend? You know, I don't know. I just got a call from Brandon Standards. He said, hey, we're gonna how you and your brothers are honorary captains.
We're definitely were static about it, and I talking to my brother. I have to got to phone and he's he had already talked to Brandon, So we kind of calling you at the same time. It's kind of cool. We're excited. So so where where's Chris these days? I know you're up in Phoenix, right you're coaching football up there. Where's Chris? It was down the street with me. Man, he's still doing a pharmaceutical business right now, okay, And uh yeah, he's going to his daughter's volleyball.
He's a club volleyball now she doest and now she's a freshman who doesn't this, So he's he's really connected with that right now, doing volleyball stuff. And good, this is like nineteen eighty nine all over again. You guys are always together, Yes, sir, absolutely, That's what I call it twins. So okay, so first, hows what have they told you you're gonna be doing tomorrow? What does an honorary co captain do? You

And then uh, I think we'll be been down in the sideline and I think I'm going to do a tour at eight o'clock in the morning, but I don't know if that's gonna happen eight o'clock in I know you guys, I know you guys have been back and forth a time or two. When was the last
time you've been here? And have you been here for Jed? I've been. I've been a couple of games. Was the last year up in? About a few games. Actually, I was just at the first game of the season. I came down for the any You game and I had a good time to during that. Well, we talked to him not quite a bit. It's my brother who doesn't get down as much dealing because he does have his daughter a lot doing volleyball. So this Gus was pretty tight.
What is your report? Are your impressions so far with under Jed? I think he's doing all right. He's in the right direction, you know. I think it's really just getting getting the fun, the fun back into the game and helping me get these kids compete, employment, reposition to win. I think he's exactly doing what are he's doing is doing a great job, all right. So we talked to We talked to George Malaulu earlier this week. We were reminiscent. We're reminiscing about the you know, the ninety two
game. Obviously, you know when they when they beat the number one Washington down here. You were gone by that time. But he also remembered the beating that the beatings that they took, you know, the two years before that, and I think one that you were a part of fifty four to ten. Yeah, I was part of that when I was get up pretty good time when I do that was up there, I think too in the range. What what do you remember about what Washington was in those days?
You know, in terms of what they were as a program. I tell you, man, the Washington was always was always a dominant team as far as when I played in my in my ear we actually were fortunate enough to beat him in and beat him in. Washington has to say them. I think that's the first thing they lost at home. Uh in the third team. But they've always been a very uh program and wall structured program. You
know. I think it was Pat was a Pat James James. It was a coach when I was there, James Don James James Don James, I was playing great coach at that time. You know, after that, I probably fold who was the coach. But they've always had a productive program, uh, And I was in my Huskies right as you look back. You had one of those great careers and then unfortunately get you got sick. How do you kind of remember this about your about your time at Arizona, Bigan?
How do you reminisce about your time at Arizona given it all your circumstances. I'll tell you I reminisce about a lot of a lot of aspects of being being part of the university, in the program. It's just it was a great experience. Now, I don't think I would ever change it. I'd do it over again. Probably wouldn't change the thing, just to comaradity with my teammates, the student population, the environment, uh, coaching Scotts
Dick told me Larry Smith my players. Again, I probably talked about that already, but I just had a really good, uh experience, and it definitely deal with your twin brother is always a plus too. Yeah. Do you do you talk to those guys up there about how the fact that you know you were at you know, Arizona all this time, never lost to him? Or yeah, you never lost to him? Soever? The sun devils And how often do you get to remind those guys. I have to
let him every time. When they started talking to Micky, I gotta let him know. You know, I've never lost the team. You know so, and I have a different perspective and that you may have probably just a fan from outside. I was in the grid. I was in the grid, arm and bleeding and sweating on those fields, and I never lost. No, No, that must have been great too, I know. You know I talked about this with Kevin and Chris all the time. You have
those glasses. There were this big dudes walking on campus. Antipid dominator, antimidating, but you love, They're bunch of softy's. It's a rock. I'm just watching terminators just now. When I left that, we had just had our team meal. We got a game tonight, and I wanted to sit and watch TV in a terminator. Was that's funny you said that? It's true though, Man, you guys look tough. He has a bunch of soft Yeah we are. We do big teddy bears. We walked around
campus. We had to put that image on. Man, you know how it is. You're right, I knew I knew that. Well, Well, tell us about your coach and Kevin, because you know you've stayed in the game. You're you're a high school you're a high school football coach. What what is what has made you stay in this and and keep doing this? It's the kid, man, the young man. You know, our coach girl football too. It's just it's just the athlete and the and the
ability to teeth, life skills and mentorities and people they needed. Man, we gotta we gotta see disperity for us. These kids understanding respect, discipline and in time management and a loyalty and believe believing in the program. So I really enjoy conveying that message. I had a great like I said, has some great mentors and my data there are those same values to me.
So I'm kind of in a great position. I think I can convey the message pretty good to these young people having first time experience as a college athlete, kind of just share my experience with them. But I love it, man, it's it's it's the life saver of my day. I do all this stuff during the day, but once I get to practice. I mean, I'm excited. Do you have any of those Tomy isms Tony isms? I probably do, but I don't know if I would pervade them active warriors,
but if I word, I'm probably using most troops. You might get a cover in friends and you don't want to say it's a team the team that I don't want to say too much right now, But think about that. Though you're you're obviously you know you're you're in coaching. You had, you know, a relationship with with coach Tommy. What's what are the kinds of things though that you did get from him and from other the other coaches that you had, or whether they were the you know, your your defensive
coaches or whatever. What kind of things do you feel are really at the top of what you do as a coach. You know, when I look at it that way that I expect he was always he was always a player's coach, of people's coach, of a parent's coach. He's always want to be involved with with with everybody. He's always he had to take this thing to me. Always everybody's first name, and it doesn't matter who it was. He would come up to you Hey, hey Johnny, how are you
doing? How do you know his name? But he just really hands on, open door policy, just really believe in his in his in his players, and wandering him all about his players. And I think that was made to keep for his successes, really finding out what's going on with these young people and how they how to really coach him and get them to see them the best ability. And that's what I try to I try to find try to find what how my kids take and how they think. And I think
that's that's how you need to involved as a coach. As before you didn't really have to get that that deep, but its kids are all of different
learning styles. We have to pretty much tap into that. And I think I've learned that belot from close to me because he was beyond his years, before his years, I think with that type of because that's that's definitely wasn't a deal back then a lot of coaches, So he was definitely one of those coaches that was hands on, and I think that's really I enjoyedable. I was great fortu u to get him as a second coach because it could
have been a whole other way forgot a different coach. Yeah, how do you as a coach now and you've been doing it for a while now, how do you try to impact the kids? Uh? Like I said, I just kind of yet, you know, MAKEE feel makeel feel good about him, so you know, I encourage him, I say positively. I think that these kids really really really absorbed that when you really are positive with him, but still with constructors sick Christen, but teaching at the same time.
I think when we want to coach and yell and screen, but at the same time, you got to build a build a confidence and encourage him to do things. And I don't think I don't want to think say we lost. I don't consider lost, consider a setback, failures a setback. They're building blocks to be successful. And that's why I kind of teach keeps my young people and just let them know that just because it didn't work this
time, it may work the next time. They still have Do you feel at high school athletes today are a lot different from the way you were in high school? Or they are there a lot of similarities. I mean, how do you compare those? You know, that's that's a tough question, you know, I you know, I don't think I can't. I don't like to prepare myself to anybody. But Chris now would differ, said right now, So just to let you know that. But these kids are definitely
different from my childhood and my peers that I grew up with. I think the tanables that the instant gratification factor is definitely a problem within all all the programs across. These kids don't want to don't have the work ethic. They just want to get the prize, and no way you want to work through the work. Unfortunately, that's a setback for him. Kevin. Well,
we look forward to talking to you or seeing you tomorrow. You and your brother enjoy the time out there and and if you if if you feel like they need a little help on defense, just jump out there and do that. I might feel Okay. You guys are awesome. I appreciate you having me. I always enjoyed it. Beyont uh and I look forward to you guys down the Thanks the great guys, one of the great guys. I
think the world of Kevin. You know, when you think about what he had to go through, well, let me tell you you know this because you were kind of in the spending this, uh what he went through back then, you know how remember how secretive it was and how we covered it. Nowadays, it's like it'd be bonkers, right right, he'd be bunkers with all the health you know, you know, you know he just you know, he got through it. You go through it, you got through
it. I mean you want to talk about you know, he'd probably hate it if we called him a hero. But he's a hero. Well,
he's got to be a hero to a lot of people. One of the most inspirational football players back in the day, right at the time, right, yeah, I was just you know, looking at a at a piece that I'm not sure who did it, but you know when he when they played the USC in ninety and Larry Smith came up and gave him a big hug, and you know, just like like you said, inspirational to not just yeah something like you and me, a high school kid or whatever,
to anybody you know, to have fought that fight and and to have won the fight. So and thirty years later, here we are, and here we are. All right, let's take our break, We're gonna come back. Sid's gonna be right fired up for breaking news, right, sit right, sit all right, and yeah, all good, okay man. So we're gonna take a break, we'll be back and then we've got Jake Fisher coming on next hour, so stick around, right, So we put our hands up like the ceiling can holder, like the ceiling
