This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jakin Salis on Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services. Make sure your most prized possessions katz R two side at iHeart Radio Station yet pay Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to I on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Ribera, You're Jenkins A Scott. Guys sit in today Friday. Should we have should have no problems? Smooth sailing through this? Yeah, I hope so
man until he picked some que didn't butcher it too much. Oh no, we're got We were okay. Yeah, Hello, Seid, how's it all going? Ready for a road game? Pack twelve road games this weekend? So looking forward to it to see what, you know, continue to see what this looks like. You know, I don't think you're gonna see Berry very much. From what do you get from it? Well, they gotta win. Well they gotta win, and so they're gonna do whatever they have
to do to win. And we may see some stuff. Part of it depends on how, you know, kind of start they get off to right, if they come out, you know, put a couple of touchdowns on the board in the first couple of couple of possessions, and you know they kind of write that, but they haven't done that, Steve, I haven't done that in any game, right. And then in our discussions, Well, let's let's say we're gonna talk to Wilner today, right, yeah,
uh, and then there's been a curveball thrown at us. We're gonna talk to Hubvier Morales, not Jake Fisher, Jakes running too some work. They imagine that work out in the way of coming on our radio show. What the hell? Right, So come on, man Wilner about all the things, Stanford. But yesterday, before yesterday, I was ready to go with Arizona. Yeah, and I won't say I'll say it later for my picks because I still might change my mind. But if you're if they have struggle
with them, I'm just I'm just staying away. Right. It's it's the pack pop opener. They're expected to win, right, So they're they're going over there with a little expectation, which is trouble, right, which can be sometimes. I got a sense from Jed's jet Fish's tone in the press conference yesterday that he's trying to keep his guys grounded on this game, you know, to not look one, not look past it, which they shouldn't
be because they've been that very good too. It shouldn't be looking past anybody. And guess how often does that work? Right? And then there's probably gonna be ten thousand people at the game, you know, So you go, and you know it's gonna be kind of like a high school football game atmosphere. Say they're studying, man, they're trying to solve the world's problems. I get it, and that's fine, but you know what, the you know what, even with the roseball teams they didn't have you know,
their attendance has never been great for football past the Green Boupo. It's not just that, dude, they work hard. They study hard. You know. The first time I ever went to the campus, it was the eighty six eighty seven season basketball season, and I just you know, the day of the game, that morning, I just said, I just want to go to the campus. I just want to see. I remember parking my car, my rental car, and I got out of the car and I
felt like I was instantly smart. We should do the show from there. I did. I swear to god, I felt like there's some learning going on here, there's no because outside yeah, and I'm like, you know, and it just walked, you know, I just walked around the campus. I went to the I went to the Bookstory, got myself a T shirt. It's like what I did when, you know, I went to
Boston and see my daughter. I went to the Harvard campus and I'm like, you just feel smarter walking around there, or just feel dub because you don't belong. Well, there was that too, because we went to when we were in Boston and uh, my daughter lived right, I mean like right near Harvard. So we went to this coffee shop literally across the street
from the campus, uh, for breakfast. And we're sitting there and we're having you know, we're having coffee and stuff like that, and I'm looking around and I said my wife, I said, I think everybody in this room is smarter than meat. Yeah. Yeah, you're right. Yeah, that's a good assumption, very good assumption on your great movie. But you know, but you know they're they're but Steve, they were winning for a long time. No, they were. We when we've talked to the guy
from yesterday, it was a boat ball. Were Ben Palmer Ben Ben Palmer Parkers one of those Palmer we got it wrong yesterday. So no, it's been a while. It's been a while, which is surprising because they were so good, so steady, yeah, for a long time. Yeah, well well well well again, you know we we've talked about and you know, this has been my theory and and just hearing it from you know, involving other schools as well. That schools like Stanford, you know who where
the academics are such a big deal. You know, say Stanford of Canderbilt, a CAL that cal maybe not so much because it is a state school,
right, but you know, so the Georgia tack. Some of these high end academic schools are having trouble with the transferporter because they you know, they lose players, but they can't go get players as readily as they're not you know, they're gonna do what Colorado did and rebuild their their roster with seventy guys or like Arizona has done, or like even a su is doing because they can't get those guys into you know, into the school. That's
my theory. You know, your theory is pretty good. And there's some other schools that are choosing not to use the transfer portal. Clemson comes to mind that because of that, you can see that they're losing ground. So the transfer portal has become, you know, a strategy more than just a you know, I mean, it's a way to build your team. And and you know Jed has built his team turned his team around in a hurry, and uh and certainly Colorado's doing that and uh, you got you know,
we wait and see. But you know a su maybe doing that as well. Yeah, we'll see. You see Dillingham's rant yesterday when that was similar to Herman, Yeah, yeah, we winning, you got here to win? Yeah it was he got a lot of play. He's right, I missed it. He's right. He goes ballistic about I wish I knew what the question was. Did you hear the question? All I got was he was and he was just letting yeah for about a minute or so, maybe a minute ranting, but you know, here here to in the game.
If you're not here to win the game, why are you playing blah blah. He's right, I mean, come on, he's right. So it was herm back in the day. I wish, I wish I would have heard the question because it's set him off. Yeah, I believe maybe it was about like them being such underdogs against usc I something like that. Yeah, well they're not even a money line thing and there's not even a money there's no money line. Wow, that's bad. Yeah, but yeah,
he should find it. Jay, it's pretty interesting. It's it's the new version of Herm's explanations that we were here to win the game. If you're not here to put in the game yet it Yet, it's funny because Herm was there before him and were put him in the situation. They're they're in such a bad spot. Yeah, well, come on, just three years ago everyone was in that spot, is there Arizona one? Right? Wow? Me to buy more more than that though, they don't, you
know, they've got the ball band and all that kind of stuff. Yeah, well that was easy, that was convenient going to I know, Steve, but you fail to I mean, I keep making the argument that their players don't believe that they're not. Well, guess what reality has said it. I'm not going to the prom Jay, you know why. I'm not going to the problem. Whether the girls are gonna say yes to me or
not, I'm not going to the problem. But okay, okay, but maybe there you know, there are guys out there who think they are even though they even though they're not. You can think you want jay if you're not good enough, you're not good But the but the point, but the point of it is, let's say you're, you know, mister goofy guy who wants to go to the prom. Okay, thinks there's somebody out there who you can go to the problem with. But then somebody comes and tells
you you can't. You're not allowed to go to the prom. You're still gonna be disappointed and upset about that. He's not going to the problem. Save your money. You ain't going to the problem. Man. If you go to the problem, you're not gonna have any fun. And if you're going to the problem, you're gonna be security. You ain't gonna be going to the prom. Da. I just got a vision of Napoleon Dynamite in my head, right, you know what I'm saying. Okay, how convenient
did they say this? They're not? They come on there, there was enough three years ago. Pretty much. Ye No, I hear you, I hear you. Anyway, Okay, but the prom, that's to expect. You know what, we're probably we just made some guys cry out there. We made like a seventeen year old kid, who's whose dad is. He's in the car with his dad listening to the radio. He was thinking about trying to go to the prom and now he's not because you because of dad. Is this true? Yes? This true? Son? We just
somebody's coming up, right, isn't at the end? That's at the end. This is like more winter formal. Winter formal will be come out. Yeah, the winner, the winner dance. It's it's it's like a prom, but it's in the winter. It's usually before the semester end. It's just scat. Guys, don't do it, just scat. Okay, So we're gonna talk to you, Hvier right at three fwhere else, talk about what's going on high school. We'll cover some high school stuff. You know.
We had we had Greg McKinstry on from Catalin on on this week and uh, you know they're three and one for the first time in a hundred years. You know, what's some of the other stuff that's going on. There's a you know, just you know, get kind of get allay the land with Hob and we'll get some of his thoughts on Stanford A zone as well. Sure, sure, and the pod stuff. Uh, and then we'll have a willer at the second hour, right, Yeah, John will be coming on. We'll you know, we'll ask him. I mean,
how did how did Stanford get so bad so fast? Because they were good not that long ago and now they're and they look and then and they were bad before that, but it got turned around Harbor and David Shock came in and did a great job. But how did it get so bad so fast? And you know with this theory that we have, or at least that I have that, uh, you know, they can't they'll have a tough time rebuilding to the through the transfer portal. You know, what's it gonna
take for them to get this thing turned around? And then there's a whole thought of them going to the AEC as well. So anyways, let's say so we'll talk to John about that and get some of his thoughts on on on the game Saturday and the other million things are still going on around the PAC twelve. Yeah, okay, that's cool. What else is going on? Well, since we got I'll bring this up because it's not a breaking news item. It was kind of funny. Did you see did you see
yesterday? So there were there were two first pitches at football at baseball games. And okay, Bruce Starr graderol is who's he throws one hundred miles an hour for the Dodgers. He's like my favorite Dodger right now. I really love this guy. What's his name, Bruce Star, Bruce Star Grader. Okay, he's from Venezuela. Okay, so his mom comes, his mom comes. He hasn't seen his mom in seven years. Okay, she comes to the game, she comes in to throw, and they let her throw
the first pitch. Okay, she gets up there and she throws gas. Wow, I mean she goes into a wind up. She's got a glove in the whole bit. I have it here, and she throws gas. And then on the same day, on the same day, here's here's her throwing the pitch right now. Watch this and on and on the same day, Stephen A. Smith goes and throws the first pitch at the Yankees and he bounces it. He doesn't even get it to the dirt. He bounces
on the grass. Let's talk about this real quickly. Because this is interesting this week or maybe last week, and I'm sure you guys have heard this. So he he and Max Kellerman, right, he used to be partners. And then I guess it was Kellerman's athletic ability or his the fact that he wasn't an athlete, Like I guess everybody's required to be an athlete to do this show, to do this, So I guess his his his worthiness was diminished because he wasn't the athlete that stephen Ace said one. First of
all, you don't have to be an athlete. You go to school to be this, right, You can do this if you have some background. And and I don't envy you guys, sid because I guess who's taking your jobs former athletes. Yeah, they're taking your job. Good luck with that, right, and and and more power to them. I guess if you have some cred that way, you can do it. But you guys are going to school for this. You guys are going to school for this.
So stephen A does this, right, what about his cred? Well exactly, And that's that's been the thing that's gone. That's what they're saying this. Okay, here's stephen A. Smith who rips on athletes for not being good athletes or rips on non athletes who are in the sports business for not being athletes. And then he goes out and throws the first pitch and and and a girl shames and she was pretty good. She looks like remember Kennedy from Kennedy Kenny Steve, that's a that's a pool, didn't she get?
But she threw a baby? And then they said, was she played? You know, she was a softball player, you know, in her country and the whole day. But she threw and she threw an overhand bby and Bruce Starr was the one catching the ball. It was it was like it was just right down the middle. And they had no art do it either. So I haven't seen this Stephen A. Smith. So what's come up conversation, Well, just just that that okay, you know he's been criticized.
It's like, okay, here's the guy. Here's the guy who's made a living out of ripping on guys for not being good enough. Right, and then he goes and throws the first pitch, and he does that. He jokes on the on the on the tweet he see he tweet he tweeted the video of himself. He said, he said it was a change of or but I looked at it again. It barely got to the dirt in
front of in front of home plate and one hoped to catcher. So you know, look, you know, I get, I mean, you know, I mean, we we're critical, you know, but you know, I mean I've just said a couple of days ago, I don't think Djo young Lady is all that good. He's but I still know that he's a really good quarterback because he's playing major college football. I'm not saying he's a
crappy you know, he's not a good athlete. But what I'm saying is he's not as good at a quarterback as people are making him out to be. Well, I don't believe in or yeah, no, I yeah, you know, uh, we'll see. You know, they got a tough game. This one thing I think they got. Yeah, and if they
lose to Washington State here you go there they open their conference season. And if they lose to Washington State, when a lot of people are saying they're gonna a dark horse to win the league, this is the we got a middle left. So I think this is the beginning of the beginning of the end of the glory of the pac twel because now they're gonna strike the beating, start cannibalizing. There's so many good things. I mean, this weekend
you ta Washington State State and again now Colorado. You know, Oregon has got to worry. Oregon is a big favorite, but they got to worry about Colorado can beat them. And nobody would have thought that going in. Yeah, but quick chance you give percent of Colorado winning. Yeah, I think they can. I don't think they will. I don't know, maybe twenty percent chance. All right, Hey, we gotta hit hit the break here. We'll we'll be back and we're gonna have Javier Morales will come in.
However, some high school football for us, So we'll be We'll be back and stick around. So I know you care to put you're to blame for me. I was gonna say, you can't blame us for that stuff. I'm still trying to forget those days. Please don't remember. So you're busy. So what's up with the stuff going on in Tucson with do you this weekend? Uh? Well, all right, school football
tonight. You know there's some big games and plus region play that none of the teams really started region play around here. They start that next week, so they're the teams are all finishing their non region non conference games to get ready for region play. And then after the fifth game has went, transfer has become eligible. So after this week, a lot of you'll see a lot of teams have new players that have been waiting to play because they transfer
from another high school. So there'll be some loster changes next week or in the next two weeks. So this is kind of a transition type of time of year. So so who's who's kind of been you know on the radar, you know play you know that that not say we're unexpected, but just uh, you know, who's you know, who who should we be paying attention to aside from the usual suspects. So, you know, we talked we talked to Greg McKinstry, Catalina. You know, they're three and one.
You know, some teams that are kind of unexpected to going to CDEO. We've talked to the you know, we've talked to new Didn't seems like that, all right, I've heard all those and uh yeah, the the one of the biggest prizes. I'm the Ridge being three and one after being one and nine last year, and they're they're winning convincingly. They're they're winning games by like four touchdowns and so they're they made a great turnaround their under
dale spot. Who's the head coach their second year when they they're one of the big stories. When did they go south? You know, because that last I remember they were pretty good. They they've been traditionally good, I mean Jake or play for and they've been good and they want to stay championship under Matt Johnson in twenty twelve. They they had a tough transition the last couple of years. They had some coaching changes and last year they only had
one returning starter back from this season before. They lost a lot of seniors. So that that's that's what happened last year plus the coaching change. Let me ask you a dumb question of dumb question because I think I know that you never have dumb questions. Thank you for the response, Thanks for checking the mail. So how have you been doing this a long time? Obviously you've been coming in to the high school. That was a long time.
And I'm Jay's gonna probably roll his eyes at me, and maybe I have an answer for me. How much politics? How much does politics play apart in high school coaching with coach with with coaches decisions and who stays, who goes, as far as players know, as far as the coaches, you know, like the administrat ration because because because there's been good coaches who have
had to leave, it comes down to person in that personality conflicts. And you know J J used to coach at at one of the high schools here vocally, so he probably knows what it's like with the administrators politics. You know, parents getting involved, administrators seeing what's you know what I'm saying, it's just kind of maybe it's not very prevalent here in time. I don't pay attention to it, but I'm sure it is. Steve, we were at the one A level, so we were at the bottom level, smallest
schools of all, and we had that stuff we did. Oh yeah, you see coaches leaving, you know, just just to just like one quote, chick count of mine is Richard Sciences at Sunnyside, and he he was rolling along. He wanted to STAY championships and then within five years he's out. He was winning, winning Stay championship wrestling, and then there was you know, some kind of a personality conflict in the within the administration him and
that was it. Same thing happened with Tucson High with him. He had to leave Tucson High before last year and he went to MIKEL. Mountain as the offensive line coach, and they have a lots of game since I mean, think things happen like that where coaches have to change because of because of
their relationship with the administrators, so and vice versa. And it could be a relationship with parents as well, right exactly, you know, yeah, yeah, sometimes you go you certain schools have have a very powerful parent group. No, no, that's why I ask. It's a question with not even question, but I know the answer to it. There isn't There probably is not a town or city sure anywhere sure that that doesn't happen. That's why I asked the level of it in Tucson. It's it's prevalent, I
can. I'm gonna say it's prevalent because it happened at the one A level. So when you're talking four A, five A, six A, where kids are trying to get into you know, get college, you know, scholarships and things like that has to be prevalent over there has to be. And it's a lot more now with social media and all these recruiting services and
stuff like that. So the parents feel all this need of getting their son to be on the best possible situation and if they see their their team is owing four and they see other teams winning and they're going to be winning. What's going on? I want my son to be noticed. I don't want to be on a one in three or one and four team. And that's when it really snowballs. Yeah yeah, so, Steve, I got I had it in middle school. No, I had that stuff. I've said
long for a long time. The worst thing that happened to our kids are parents, I mean, honestly in sports. All right, how back to the game. So what else we got? We got this weekend? You know, I mean, let's let's just ask you. You know South Point, you know, the good school, and how are they doing? Are they looking, you know, south Point looking like they can compete for a
state championship? Everybody's talking you. I think you were the one that talked about cdo somebody that you thought would would have a good shot the state championship. There's both those teams are still undefeated. CDEO plays at Maranna tonight. Miranda's won and three, but they're always dangerous with Desmond Roebuck and they're playing at their home field for the first time the whole season. They're playing tonight as seeing the cdeos come in there, so that should be a good game.
I don't know if you guys saw, but Desmond Roebuck, he's a view of a recruiting target. He had nineteen catches last week in the Lost and Mount View nineteen catches for one hundred and eight yards. So it's too shy of John Missler's state record. He's a he's gonna if he can, if he if Arizona gets him, he's gonna be one of those guys that kind of like almost like an Elijah Rushing. Maybe not to like five star degree, but he's one of those playmakers that people are going to be proud
that he stayed at Arizona. But yeah, that's a big game tonight. You know, there's sell points off tonight. They're they're four and ozer Uh, They're they're rolling along. I don't think there's been any game for them closer than a three touchdowns they've they've won by wide margins, so they're they're right there in the thick of things. They start their six A Central Region
play next week, right, which is mostly Phoenix area schools. You mentioned Michael Mountain, you know and we had Michael Mountain, right, we had their coach Pat Pat Nugent on you know what what's going on over there? And how do they look? They're they're four No, they've won nine straight since last year, Like I said, service since Richard sanchis going the coaching staff, they haven't lost. And and when Jimmy Leon became knowledgeable after trans
from Seal plains the defensive end, they haven't. They haven't lost either, as US already offered him a scholarship. So uh, he's definitely worth the Arizona to look at. He's he leads some of the Arizona with the eight sacks. He's just a beast on the on the coming off the edge. So they're they're four. No, they're gonna play Constagrants and tonight at home Consta Grants three and one, so that should be a good matchup for them. Also tonight, where's Jay Dobbins. We said this sorrow, So how's
that team? Because they have a pretty good coaching staff there, don't they they do? They're they're two and two, they won two in a row, and they're gonna get some transfers here, like a couple from Mica Mountain and they're gonna be They're gonna be more competitive here. In the next couple of weeks or two and two. They play Iron the rich tonight, which
is a pretty interesting game with Iron Ridge three and one. Uh yeah, Jay Dobbins on that staff, you got Dennis Benet as the offensive coordinator. You got Cam Denson as a defensive backs coach. Wow, you know l Alexander who Jay knows what this Diversell the head coach. So they had some really good coaches there. Well, that was another place too, getting back to the politics of its Scott McKee, who was seemingly going to a great
job over there, then all of a sudden he was gone. And then he's somewhere else now because we found that out ye at uh cdo Yeah, that's the consultant. So high school, Oklahoma right with love Phoma or Alabama. Yeah, So let me ask you, how have you been back for a while now into the city of your hometown. Football here seems to have increased, uh in terms of talent a lot. I wouldn't say a lot, I would say it has increased. I think I think COVID nineteen really
really affected UH. The Arizona more than it did Phoenix because there there are some student athletes that went up to Phoenix after when that all came about, and that that affected some some of the talent pool here. But you know, it's kind of increased with the Lijah rushing and Jonah will hide uh Kylie Woodard at CDEO. There's some really good talent here that could play at the
Division one level or that will play at the Division one level. Uh Kayden Luke the running back at CDO I expecting to be a Division one player. There's there's a number of them. It is increasing, right, getting better. So wait, we went to the game, so how lead were you there doing the raindo? I ended up leaving there eleven thirty, eleven eleven forty. They were turning out to light. I was asleep by that time for sure. All right, so let's talk a little Let's talk cats a
little bit. Stanford Arizona tomorrow. You know, the thinking is that Arizona should go over there and beat the hell out of them, but we all you know, you've been around long enough, Steve hasn't so avid to know that you don't take anything for granted when you're when you're Arizona. What do
you think tomorrow? Yeah, so I grew up just like you see in Jay's watching them and when they play, when they're favorite on the road, that's when you're there, you're really like you're nervous because they don't play well.
It's a favorite on the road. I don't know what the points for it is in the game, but uh, I would think that they can take care of Stanford though the problems that they're having with the first year coach and get didn't get any things situated there quarterback is I think they're struggling at quarterback right. Yeah. I would assume that Arizona's defense can continue to improve and I think I think they can come out of there with the win.
The team, there's a different feeling about this team than we've felt in the last wet three or four years, five years, eight years, different film, there's a different feeling with it. It is, but it's the spreads eleven and a half, by the way, or if that's what it was yesterday, that's a lot. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't think it is. But I won't touch it. I'm not touching it. I'm
not touch it. No, No, you can't know again, you know Arizona on the road, in the Pact, in the you know, in the league game, you just you just never know what to expect, so not touch. Well, thanks for joining in the last pinch hitter role. Yeah, appreciate nice job. And I was thinking that Jake Fisher you guys are talking about, guys, could be two way guys. I think Jake Fisher could have been a good run to be like a running lead running back
blocking back. He was fast for he played that. I think. Yeah, he was a running back and he played that at irowand Ridge, So he was a dog. He'd be he'd be good. I guess, yeah, I guess he could have been. Yeah, okay, kind of a bowling ball type of running back, right, full back tech right, Okay, Mike st st striking Remember Striden Stridening, Mike Stridnick remember him? on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera here. Jacons Ols got a guy said in today we have eleven minutes if you guys want to call five to zero four one seventy four forty Do you have something you want to talk about? Okay? Okay, So I was just on Twitter something to do, but I saw that Dion was talking about how recruiting high schools or that he felt sorry for high school players because recruiting high school players is not in
anymore. Yeah, because of the transfer report. Right, Why go after a high school kid if he's not rushing where you already have guys who know how to play to come in and play for you. Yeah, and that he's saying, the only incentive that you I should One of the incentives is that universities need to up the scholarship numbers so they can go after high school kids. But the transfer portal is kind of created a lot of kids.
That's where that's where the recruiting is taking place. Yeah. And and the thing is it's already been proven to work, and even to Jac's because Jac's this is now the new jac This is the new j C. And what what you know, what it is is that you know, you go to uh, you know, Southern Utah, right, you know that that kid that was didn't quite get the you know, the the you know, the major school scholarship goes to Southern Utah or you know there's a school that takes
a lot of two son kids, Adams State, right, you know, take the and those kids go there, play a year or two, get get their film out, and the next thing you know, they're at Arizona or wherever. Give you two jay, I'll give you two ones on the team right now. Yeah, it was not really recruited. Went to Utah because he wasn't really recruited. Right now, he's hearing he's gonna be a star, and he a star. And the kid that we talked to his dad Lopez, Yeah right, no one won more. He was in New
Mexico State, ended up in Arizona and then the NFL. No, you're right, you know, and and again when when you talk about and look, we we've talked about you know, Dabbo Sweeney over at Clemson, he's trying to hang onto the whole thing of I want to get my guys from high school. They don't have any bad habits. We bring them in, we we we uh coach getting, we coach them up. We get him
into our culture and we develop them. But what happens if you got you know, the position you're you're you're bringing in a high school let's say a right tackle, all right, and you've got a right tackle starting right tackle, and he decides to leave. Now you've got to play the true freshman.
And you weren't expecting that, And and that that's what's happening over at Clemson, and white people saying they're they're you know, they're losing ground is because they're losing you know, because look, Arizona's got transfers from Alabama, Michigan, Oregon, US. I mean, they got transferred from all these schools. Those guys they go other places and and and some of them might
might be going just because they want to play somewhere else. Maybe they you know, maybe they were playing wherever they were, but they said, you know what I've got. You know, I'm a graduate student. Now I've got a fifth year. I want to go play where I want to play, right And so they leave, and now there's a big giant hole in there, and you can't always fill that with a high school kid, quarterback, especially quarterback especially. We do not see any more true freshman starting anymore.
And very very fair in terms of just players. Yeah, like like true freshman coming that's what he said. And then they go get kids out of the port. That's what he said, he says, And you don't see ridshirt freshman either, because they're not gonna sit. They're gonna transfer. Right. Well, you have one now, police, who's gonna do that because he's good enough, Right, he's good enough. And how rare is that? Yeah, no, it's it's changed everything. And you're right that
the ones that are losing out are the junior colleges. You know, those kids are having Look, they'll play somewhere because you know what the people the players that are coming from, let's say the group of five schools and even the smaller schools or those are gonna get They're gonna get the high school kids. And then he got some you know, look, Travis Hunter went to went to Jackson State, right what an hbc U school. He was the
top recruit in the country. Right, Well, he wanted to play for you, he wanted to play for but the point being that he didn't feel like he had to go to Ohio State or Michigan or somewhere to get to where he wants to go. And at the end of the day, j to get to where you want to go is the big thing? Right? Where can I get to the league? Right? Well, you know, I mean why did why did why did Dorian Singer leave Arizona? Because his
goal was to you know, he wants to get into the league. The system now afforded him the opportunity to make whatever moves he needed to make to improve his chances. We walked on in Arizona. He gets you know, he does well, he gets attention, USC comes calling him. Now he's at USC where he's getting more and more visibility and he's gonna get noticed and don't forget NL and then don't forget Did you see where? I don't know, I hope I'm not mistaking this, but where uh sent her Son?
The quarterback was making like eleven million or something? When the hell? Why in the hell would you want to leave that place? And then eleven million? Indian said you ain't leave in college anytime soon. Well, yeah, yeah, I heard it. I heard that quote. I didn't know it was in the context of that I heard it. Well, it was not
in the context. It was just two separate, two separates. Oh but yeah, I did hear him say, you know, I just heard a clip of him saying, you know, guys don't have to leave college anymore to make they can Some of these guys can make more money here than they can. You know. In the NFL, Williams dad was quoted saying something similar like, if if the team that's there at number one, we don't like it, sure he's already making five or whatever he was making. Yeah,
yeah, no, yeah, why would you. No, he has said if he doesn't like the team that that, uh, you know he's gonna draft you. But look he's gonna roll the dice and then he may not like the next team either, right right, right, Well, so you don't have to go to the problem there. But no, it's no that it no, it has totally changed everything. The whole recruiting. Look, the top players, the Elijah Rushings, you know, those guys,
they're still gonna get recruited. They're still gonna go to the big school. But when you're talking about that that three star kid you know, or the two stars Scoop, you know, one of those guys, they might not wind up or they're gonna wind up at they're gonna fill a hole, you know, at a lower level that was created when a school at a higher
level took somebody's Well, and here's here's the thing. The two two stars scoops are gonna go to the Mexico States or the Naus, prove their worth and then go and then find their way again and there, you know, And that's just the way it's gotta be a coach. It's gotta get used to the who there was? Who's I listening to? Uh? Could be anybody? I know I was listening to something. I might have been one
of the podcasts I'm just talking about. Can you imagine what Bosham, Beckler, Woody Hayes, Bear Bryant and no, uh, Joe Paterno, you know coaches like that, legendary coaches like that, Their heads would have exploded. Well, no, they'd be Clemson, they'd be we don't need that crap, we don't need that crap. Their heads would have well, it's
kind of like we talked about with with this all this stuff. Okay, he might he took a Brian Williams, he took a Chris Meals, but it was very selective and what he did because he had the other guys to fill in the spot. But I'm sure we've hated it. He said, those those guys would have hated this. They probably would have gotten out because of it. As we've seen other coaches in various sports, just football. You know, we've talked about you know, would Loud have hated this?
Yes, well, there's no question. There's no question, Kindle Loot. Even Dick told me, even you would have said, I can handle it. I can handle it. In fact, he take, Dick told me, would have thrived in this. Yeah, we can recognize your talent. We can take it. Let's take this call higher on the air and I on the ball. How's it going today? What's up Brian? You about
two minutes? Okay? You guys are talking about the possibility my helm, everything about people not going into the draft because they can make more money. There's one problem that they have to worry about, and especially Caleb Williams if he decided, like Jay said, get picked by a crap your team the next year. But you got to worry about injury. Yeah, that's true,
yep. And that's probably the most important thing is that, well I take my shot and get my you know, my twenty million dollars in the pros, you know, or do I stay in college and go ahead and make them at a couple of millions for the next year. Well, and that's the possibility if I blow out my knee, I'm shot. Well. One of the things I heard about that was that, you know, if you're Caleb Williams, you know, get your butt into the NFL because you
want to get to your second contract as soon as you can. And so yeah, that was the argument against that. Yeah, no, I can understand some of these guys might be a third or fourth round pick. That's fine, But those guys win the first or second round, they need to go as fast as they can. I agree, But yeah, possible, you make more money, alright. Also to the cat should win by eighteen eighteen, you're going eighteen Okay. I like to pick. I like to pick a lot, but I like it. Yeah, yeah, all right,
Brian, Hey, thanks a bunch man, appreciate it. Have a good weekend, all right. No, And that was the that was the argument that I heard about about Caleb Williams, that you know, look, your body can only take so much over a certain amount of time. You know, don't if you don't have to spend another year in college, then don't go get go get If you're if you're a Caleb Willibs, you're gonna get your money. Ye, go get it in the NFL. Right.
I get it that you want to play for a winner, Dad, But if you're a top five draft pick, you're gonna be on a bad team no matter what. So just right, and your opportunity to play it is very good, but higher because if you're if you played for a really good team, you're sitting behind the starter. I mean Bryce Young, he's starting in his first I don't think he should be. No, No, I don't think he should. Well, he's not playing well either. I mean
it kind of shows you in the time. It doesn't hurt now, so good luck with us. I mean he's hurt. What happened to him. He's out for He's out this week and maybe another another game after that. Okay, I was gonna I was gonna say, he's a shorter quarter quarterback. Right, he's a shorter quarterback. He was a small guy. So, I mean, I don't think that, man, how you sustain that level of play against those big guys coming out either man, that's a tough
job. It is. It is a tough job, you know, kind of Murray mask to wait for that's what that's why the Red Rifle had it made. Holding the clipboard just just yeah, just hang around and you'll get to play at some point if you hang around in the right play. Yeah, okay, absolutely all right. We're gonna take our break into the first hour. We're gonna come back breaking news with with Sid here at the top of the hour, and then John Willer joining us about four or fifteen.
We'll cover a number of subject with him, So stick around for all that as we head towards our hap five Friday picks at the end of the next hour. So I'm gonna have a good sand rolling in there about in the Atlanta some Saturday. I'm a good
